Poll: Capitalism Is As Popular in America as Socialism Is Unpopular
Plus: A poppyseed muffin prompts the authorities to take a newborn baby, two-thirds of young voters support sex work decriminalization, and more...

The latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll spends a lot of time sussing out American voters' views on President Donald Trump's impeachment and the 2020 election. But something else is tucked in there too: new numbers on the national mood when it comes to capitalism and socialism.
Fifty-two percent of those polled said they viewed capitalism positively, while just 19 percent said the same about socialism. In an almost mirror flip, 18 percent had a negative view of capitalism, while 53 percent viewed socialism negatively.
The poll of 1,000 registered voters was conducted last week (and has a 3.1 percentage point margin of error).
"Democratic primary voters have a net-positive impression of socialism (40 percent positive, 23 percent negative), and Dem voters ages 18-34 view it even more favorably (51 percent to 14 percent)," reports NBC. "But key general-election groups like independents…suburban voters and swing-state voters have a much more negative impression of socialism."
The first votes for the Democratic presidential nominee are being cast in Iowa today.

A false positive drug test prompted the authorities to take an Alabama mom's newborn, just four hours after she gave birth. The hospital "declined to comment on why [Rebecca Hernandez] was drug tested in the first place," says NBC. But "in many parts of the state, hospitals test mothers without their consent, and tests are often done on a case-by-case basis" that winds up biased against poor women.
A 2015 investigation from ProPublica found that Alabama's rules—aimed at stopping drug use by pregnant women and new mothers—are some of the most strict in the country.
Hernandez has since been reunited with her new son, but the experience was a "nightmare," she told WAFF last week.
Her doctor, Yashica Robinson, said the false positive probably came from Hernandez eating a poppy seed muffin the day before she went into labor. Robinson criticized same-day drugs tests that trigger the takeaway of newborn children and said hospitals should wait on lab-confirmed results, which in this case cleared Hernandez.

Warren's tax returns show gas-well royalties. The Wall Street Journal observes:
On her first day as President, Elizabeth Warren says she will "ban fracking—everywhere," while putting a "total moratorium" on leases offshore and on federal lands. Ms. Warren has signed a pledge to refuse campaign contributions over $200 from the oil-and-gas industry. She's a past sponsor of a Senate bill called the Keep It in the Ground Act.
So it's worth noting that, for years, she and her husband reported modest income from natural-gas royalties in her native state of Oklahoma….Ms. Warren's campaign has posted 11 years of her tax returns, which show gas income from at least 2008. That year she filed jointly with her husband, Bruce Mann, who had $872 in royalties from gas wells in Oklahoma. There are smaller amounts—a few hundred dollars—reported over the next several tax returns, before the yearly earnings stop….
"Elizabeth and Bruce sold or transferred these mineral interests to her children several years ago," a Warren campaign spokesman said. "Her children still own them. They generated a few hundred dollars a year." How long did Ms. Warren and Mr. Mann receive these royalties? Were the amounts larger in the past? The campaign declined to say. For context, gas wells become less productive over time.
"If you ask us, there's nothing wrong here," the Journal's editorial board adds. But "it belies the purism of her presidential rhetoric. She speaks as if oil inevitably stains everything it touches."

Hello.
That does it. How dare Trump congratulate the Chiefs? Doesn't he know they're racists just like him? And why is he propping Alice up like a nigger pet? We know why! It's because he's racist!
How dare he!?!
Is this how you prog-rage?
Trump got the state wrong... KC is in Missouri. He quickly deleted and corrected. But remember, we are racist if we bring up 57 states and ageist if we point out Bidens geography gaffes.

This is a guy who tried to buy a football team. You'd think he would know where the other football teams are from.
Well, at least he didn't have to deal with Nancy Pelosi's team winning.
I mentioned that this morning on Facederp and one of my bourgeoisie liberal classmates from high school pulled an ackshually, "all the people I'm around in NYC know where KCMO is".
Well, that's not what I said, but go on acting like you're one of the proletariat and not a pretentious snob.
There is a Kansas City, Kansas which is right across the Missouri and Kansas Rivers from Kansas City, Missouri.
However, the Kansas City Chiefs HQ is evidently located in Kansas City, Missouri.
Not just their headquarters, dumbshit. Their stadium, their HQ, everything.
Your citation fell off.
Citation? Really? You're that dumb?
Ummm, ask any reasonably intelligent fifth grader.
I did ask you...a 5th grader. Not intelligent but a fifth grader sock troll nonetheless.

I never lived in Kansas City, Missouri or KC Kansas so I would have no idea.

Why do you keep trying to pull this type of parody off? You get your ass handed to you every time you do. You are not even close to being amusing, nor is it very original. Listen, Canadians might be nuanced enough to have teams from Saskatchewan and Ottawa in the same league with the same name, but it takes real American ingenuity to have city named after a neighboring state in undifferentiated flyover country.

undifferentiated
got it
And to be clear, Kansas City is on the border of Kansas and Missouri. People come from both states to support them- especially since just a few years ago, St Louis had a team that Missourians could claim fully as their own. It can easily be forgiven for someone to think that the Chiefs are a "Kansas" team. The president's final message really should have been "The great states of Kansas and Missouri"- not one or the other.
Indeed, I doubt ENB would have spotted the mistake if their weren't an article about it.
Look, why are you defending the idiot? He made a really stoopid mistake, on Twitter. I got paid to defend Trump, but what's your motivation?

Fifty-two percent of those polled said they viewed capitalism positively, while just 19 percent said the same about socialism.
19% margin of economic error.
It’d be more interesting to find out what the 19% who liked Socialism think Socialism is. I bet most would mention Sweden.
Its a system that like totally helps out the poor instead of just giving all the money to the rich.
Sorry, who is giving money out? I want some...
Which is completely hilarious as the Scandinavian countries tend to be much more capitalistic then the US. Less regulations, lower taxes, more business friendly atmosphere, etc...
Sweden is Socialist. Sweden is classified as a parliamentary representative democratic constitutional monarchy.
The King of Sweden does not appear to hold any real power (King still listed as Head of State though) as power is supposedly held by the peopel via the Riksdag (Parliament). The Parliament chooses the Prime Minister by voting on that person.
So, the Swedish government wholly or partially owns dozens of enterprises.
List of government enterprises of Sweden
There are two types. Government-owned companies are legally normal companies but mainly or fully national owned. They are expected to be funded by their sales. A big customer might be the government or a government agency. The other type is government agencies which might also do activities competing with private owned companies. They usually are funded by tax money but can also sell services. The government has tried to avoid having agencies doing commercial activities, by separating out areas that compete with private companies into government-owned companies, for example within road construction. The reason is both to avoid unfair competition, and a wish to have market economy instead of plan economy as much as possible. Based on the tradition of avoiding "ministerial rule", the government has avoided interfering with the business of the companies, and allowed them to go international.
Sweden is a resource rich country the size of the western seaboard with a total population about equal to the greater Chicagoland area. Socialism works well for them, but it isn’t really applicable to what we have here in the United States.
Sweden is actually retreating from a large portion of their "socialism". Denmark is a very business friendly country. And yes Sweden owns some state ran companies, but they also promote free trade and have fairly soft business regulations. The Scandinavian model, as was pointed out by the Danish PM in 2016 to Bernie Sanders, is for a welfare state supported by a strong, aggressive free market.
All of Europe depends on billions of dollars in subsidies from Uncle Sucker in the form of military protection.
Of course they do. But when Trump threatened to make NATO pay for itself, everyone, including Reason, had a heart attack.
Sweden might be moving toward more free market principles and that's great.
Unfortunately, Sweden is in the EU which is a super Socialist bureaucracy.
Add in a tax burden almost double of the USA, 70% unionized national workforce, and near absolute government control of healthcare... you have Socialism trying to hide itself via Lefty Propaganda.
14% of those thought capitalism referred to their poor spelling structures and odd capitalization of letters, the other 4% couldn't distinguish between Doric, Ionic or Corinthian.

Anti-solar panel can generate electricity at night, researchers say
This type of theory about new tech might have happened if fossil fuels were not subsidized and all energy production was free to work out which is best in the market.
How about if, like, all energy was free?
Nothing is "free".
Interesting article. On of the stupider ideas I've seen lately, though. Contrary to the article's claims, photovoltaic solar panels are not "heat engines". That is a specific term for a specific way of turning energy into work.
Photovoltaics, on the other hand, exploit an electro-chemical property that allows photons of the correct energy to knock an electron loose to directly generate current. Photons of the incorrect energy are either reflected or absorbed as waste heat.
Now, you could in theory use a heat engine to generate energy at night. Heat engines depend on a temperature gradient and it doesn't much matter which direction the gradient is sloped. But the slope of the gradient does determine the maximum theoretical efficiency of the engine. The temperature differential between the earth and space is high enough to generate reasonable amounts of energy but the engine presumably won't all the way out in space - it will be somewhere in the atmosphere with a resulting much smaller differential. We can barely make solar panels efficient enough to be cost-effective under ideal circumstances. I don't see this ever getting beyond an interesting science experiment.

Trump Iowa goal: Win general election while Democrats struggle through caucuses
In February 1984, President Ronald Reagan, assured of his party's nomination for reelection, nevertheless decided to fly to Iowa to hold two rallies, one in Waterloo and the other here in Des Moines, on the day Democrats held their presidential caucuses.
Reagan's move frustrated Democratic leaders. The state party chairman called the visit a "stunt" and "not worthy of a president." Another Democrat, speaking anonymously to the New York Times, said, "Let's face it: Reagan's media event will clobber our media event."
I wonder if Democrats will go back to hating Ronald Reagan?
They never stopped.
The difference is the media will not cover Trump's event.

Fifty-two percent of those polled said they viewed capitalism positively, while just 19 percent said the same about socialism. In an almost mirror flip, 18 percent had a negative view of capitalism, while 53 percent viewed socialism negatively.
Unless the poll gave precise definitions of capitalism and socialism, polls like this are meaningless. Because people just wind up substituting their own definitions for these things.
Either
Capitalism = Wall Street fat cats foreclosing on poor homeowners
Or
Capitalism = Mom and Pop stores in the heartland
Either
Socialism = Soviet gulags and death camps
Or
Socialism = Western European social welfare states
Or
Socialism = Government paying for roads and bridges
Your definitions are dumb. Read a text book.
That may have been his point, but I’ll let him defend it.
All of those terms are what many people colloquially use as operating definitions of "capitalism" and "socialism". So unless these polls have precise definitions, they are worthless, because they aren't measuring support for, or opposition to, anything precise, only people's subjective feelings towards them.

And SF needs some good corners; Sherman's smart, but he's several steps closer to 40 than SF needs back there.
As a lifelong 12, I was sad to see Sherman go. We don't have anyone near his level of smarts currently, but watching him yesterday, he just doesn't dominate anymore. I remember when QBs never threw to his side of the field. And his inability to cover receivers when Mahommes got outside the pocket after broke plays? After playing on the same team as Wilson for so many years, you'd think that would be one of his strengths.
I thought Sherm would have a great game, and...he did not. Clearly not the same player he was in Seattle. Speaking of which, I hope the Seahawks get some of the right pieces in place this offseason to make a challenge next year.
It needs to start with our O-line. We are a run first offense but our offensive line is to inconsistent for that. Also, our defense doesn't really have a personality anymore. We were supposed to be transitioning to a blitz style offense away from a dominating secondary but mediocre blitz game (most sacks were coverage sacks) but our pass rush wasn't great. Our secondaries are not at the level of the LOB and we were supposed to compensate with a strong blitz game. Hopefully they decide which they want to be and fix it.
Agreed - I'd like to see them get better at pass rush. As you say, it was not very good this year.
I thought damien William's deserved it more. 130 all purpose yards and 2 td including the clincher.
More than Mahomes. for sure.
The Superbowl MVP is a joke because to often it isn't given to the key player. And you knew they were going to give it to Mahomes from the coin flip if the Chiefs won.
The difference was Mahomes finally started hitting the broad side of a barn in the passing game. (Credit to the Niners' defense for rattling him early)
Yeah, Reid is a hell of a coach, but Spagnola should get more credit in the fourth quarter for finally shutting down Garoppolo and company.
2nd and 5, couple minutes left SF up 20-17, after a 5 yard run to open drive.
Shanny calls pass, it’s batted down.
That was the game.
Stopped clock and forced them to throw on 3rd down.
Stick with the run, Shanny.
That’s 2 Superbowls it’s cost you
I thought they should have gone for it on 4th and 2 in the 2nd quarter instead of settling for that field goal.
Sorry, third quarter.
Kc had all 3 timeouts. Ended game with 2 if o remember. Wasnt an issue.
KC couldn't stop the run.
3rd and 2 is a big difference from 3rd and 5.
You can run or pass then. But 3re and 5 is automatically a passing down.
Time was getting tight.
A first down there puts tons of pressure on KC.
It was a dumb call.
Butter the bitter Falcon fan in me is relieved that Shanny didn't correct his mistake
Hmm
But
Not butter
When it comes to Kansas City, you have got to stay pedal-to-the-metal at all times. Their offense is way too explosive to play conservative once you get a lead.
That was the same mistake the Texans made a few weeks ago, and the Oilers made against the Bills way back when. Who gives a shit if you win 63-3 and people get their feelings hurt? Put your foot on their throat and don't ever take it off.
The best part was calling time out twice when KC was just trying to end the game. You’re down by 11 with 55 seconds left, but sure, be a douche about it.
Shanahan blew this lead with questionable play calling in the last half of the 4th quarter, going away from what was working and eating clock and getting Jimmy Garappolo clobbered in the process. He made similar mistakes with Atlanta when they were up 28-3 against New England. He apparently didn't learn from that. KC made the plays when they had to, but give Shanahan a strong assist.
LOL - Reid hasn't won one yet. The 49'ers are challenging the ruling that KC won, something about the whistleblowers on the field and their being limited to calling on only 11 players instead of as many as they want. A totally unfair and rigged contest.
Didn't the Russians hack their computers and post their playbook on Wikipedia also?
And don't forget the 49ers actually won the yardage game but because of an archaic rule regarding the score, the Chiefs "technically" won.

"Bike lane causes traffic misery for teachers on Richmond-San Rafael Bridge"
[...]
"When traffic backs up on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, Rebecca Kittredge takes a shortcut that can get her to work in Larkspur half an hour faster — by a route that’s twice as long.
Driving an electric car that qualifies her for the fast-moving diamond lane on Interstate 80, she instead heads to the Bay Bridge and drives through San Francisco to the Golden Gate Bridge, looping the bay to get from Berkeley to her Marin County teaching job.
“It really shouldn’t be faster for me to double-bridge,” said Kittredge, who is in her 20th year teaching at Redwood High School.Morning peak traffic on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge’s westbound upper deck has increased by nearly a third, from 3.5 million vehicles a year in 2010 to 4.5 million in 2019.
[...]
Yet Kittredge and other motorists have a bigger complaint: the new bike lane.
Beloved by cyclists, it consumes what used to be the right-hand shoulder of the westbound span, where vehicles pulled over after a stall or crash. Without that lane, small fender-benders have caused more than an hour of gridlock, annoying everyone but especially vexing teachers who have to get to work on time. Those at Redwood High and neighboring schools have become vigorous bike lane opponents.

"Since opening in November, the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge bike lane has carried roughly 160 commuters in each direction on an average weekday,..."

Note that last number is *daily* and *both ways*, so to satisfy 40 self-righteous people, 4.5 million people lose an hour each morning (and we can assume the same is true in the evening).
I really can't say enough about bikers...
The bicycle mafia is real. In my city they freaking have the city council wrapped around their fingers, even though it’s -10 degrees for five months out of the year and 90% of them put their bikes away until May. They zip through red lights, pound your hood and flip you the finger if you try to reclaim the right of way, and worst of all have some sort of deranged snooty holier than thou attitude that prevails them. I’ve been so happy with the rent a scooter craze. We force them to use the bike lanes, and now those bike nazis have to deal with the afterwork drunk bro on a Lime scooter as they peddle their precious $4,000 Trek bike home.
I commute on my bike and I hate the bikers too. They ruin everything
Great State of Kansas
There’s two problems right there. But anyway, it’s not always easy to remember which of the 57 states a city is in.
That is likely to be true whether capitalism polls at 1%, 50%, or 99%, given that they are pretty much diametrically opposed.
Like clockwork, after about 30 minutes of TV, they come bounding his way, begging for new toys. “Any toy that has pink on it,” Morris told me, “it’s ‘Daddy, can I have this? Daddy, can I have this?’”
You don’t honestly expect parents to tell their kids no, do you?
>>the false positive probably came from Hernandez eating a poppy seed muffin the day before she went into labor
25 years since the Seinfeld joke this is still a thing?
The War on Drugs also has a 2 week memory cycle.
and is mostly unconstitutional.
I think you mean entirely unconstitutional
yes but someone will always say something when i get all extreme so i tempered it
That’s right Hernandez. White lotus. Yam-yam. Shanghai Sally.
"I'm Keith Hernandez" every damn time we see him still. It will always be funny.
"Laws in 35 states allow cops to have sex with someone in their custody"
I'm fairly certain cops fuck people in all 50.
also half of KC including all the money suburbs are in Kansas so fuck off.
Not to mention that the “Washington Redskins” play in a Maryland suburb, and both the “New York Giants” and “New York Jets” play in a garbage landfill in New Jersey.
So really, who gives a fuck. The critics are mostly the same jerkoffs who say Obama is a genius even though he thinks America has 57 states.
Call me when the pollsters ask:
"Do you think people should be free to exchange things of value, including their own labor, without coercion from others?"
Adam Schiff does not know who the whistleblower is and has never met him.

Is any of that tinfoil hat nuttery true? If so.... why don't we actually know about that, instead of weird conspiracy theory sites posting it?
This showed up on my phone via google news feed. Could be the photos are fake or not. At this point I have no idea. Just passing it along in the public interest.
Somebody around here knows. How about you paid DNC "rapid response" guys? What i the deal?
Yet every time Eric Ciamarella is mentioned, he gets on his high horse...
At long last, it’s finally here: the start of Gillespie and Welchie Boy’s democratic party primaries.
Best of luck to you and your team in selecting a candidate. Especially since they all absolutely suck.

Today in media news:
The Today Show had a panel discussion (rare for them) about Iowa. They featured Savannah Guthrie as moderator/interviewer and Chuck Todd as the liberal voice (yes, journalist and former white house correspondent Chuck Todd) and Clair McCaskill as the conservative voice (yes, former democrat Senator Clair McCaskill).
They discussed the race and strategy and even the big money of Mayor Bloomberg.
But they very scrupulously avoided the Only issue of interest to the democrat base and political insiders on this issue - the DNC rigging the game to exclude people from the debates and then suddenly switching the rules to include Bloomberg even though he does not qualify.
This, from the DNC that rigged the last presidential primary to ensure a Hillary Clinton victory over Bernie.
Not a peep about it, even when discussing Bloomberg and money and the debates. Clair McCaskill helpfully offered that money isn't everything in politics though, which was kind of salient.
How about the poll that Buttigieg had gagged?
We should probably all consider ourselves lucky if nobody gets murdered in cold blood by the DNC this time around.
Speaking of that, I wonder how that intense Seth Rich murder investigation is coming along these days, if they’ve got any hot new leads they’re pursuing
The fix is in and the Bernie Bros are livid. DNC also looking at changing the super delegate rules to stop Bernie. The Democrats will be lucky if there isn't actual blood shed on the convention floor. The Bros will not vote for Biden or Warren in the general. They'll vote Trump, Libertarian, Green or just stay home.
Yup. Bernie Bros surely are not going to let the DNC do the fix again like in 2016.
Michael Moore says it is time to stop just taking it.
You know what is gonna happen? They are all gonna shut up and turn out to hate Trump. Most will have reconfigured it in their brain that Bernie getting screwed out of the nomination was actually a Trump plot.
How unhinged is the left over Trump's ad?
Via Daily Beast article, who's point was that Trump is totally a racist neo-nazi and his criminal justice reform didn't even have anything to do with Johnson's release. No, really.
It was much less racist when Obama let her remain imprisoned. Why doesn't Trump care about the diversity of our prison populations?
President Trump's tweets are illiterate.
His average supporter is a poorly educated, superstitious, subliterate, bigoted slack-jaw.
I perceive a connection.
You are boring, and an asshole.
I perceive a connection.
What is funny is that this is 24 hours removed from the data that proves conclusively that the opposite is true on this very site.
I have lived around the KC area for over 10 years, mostly on the Kansas side, and I didn't immediately realize Trump's gaffe because almost EVERYONE in Kansas, the eastern side at least, was really excited that the Chiefs made it to the super bowl.
Any Kansans that were offended by Trump's tweet probably were one of the few who didn't care about the Super Bowl
The point isn't that Trump offended anyone. The point is he's the fucking President and he doesn't know basic American geography.
Nah Trump was right. Can we just get a sharpie and rename it Missouri City? It makes no sense, right? Maybe the founders were confused and gave it the wrong name. Not many people know this but people in those days they didn’t have good maps. They were in wagons and just stopped somewhere. So they thought they were in Kansas and didn’t go far enough. I know about maps. Nobody knows about maps better than I do.
It used to be called Kansas town before it was Kansas city.
