Northeastern Illinois University Students Say Hosting Sean Spicer Promotes Violence

"Any platform he is provided...creates more space for right-wing extremists to escalate their attacks on our communities."

Sean Spicer, former White House press secretary, and Donna Brazile, former Democratic National Committee chairwoman, are slated to appear at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) on Thursday night to discuss the 2020 election.

But some student activists are demanding that the administration cancel the event. They argue that giving Spicer a platform promotes violence against marginalized people.

"We see the policies and rhetoric of the Trump administration—including the role Spicer took early in this administration—as drivers of this violence," protest organizers wrote on the Facebook event page for the Rally to Stop Sean Spicer at NEIU, which will take place during the event. "The role Spicer played—and that the Trump administration continues to play—in this violence is one of creating space for these acts to occur."

According to these students:

Spicer has consistently promoted policies like the Muslim ban, a border wall, family separation, mass deportations, banning trans people from serving in the military, and many other policies that have encouraged the violence that is taking over our world.

Any platform he is provided, including ones where people are allowed to debate and argue these policies, serves to legitimize these policies, and creates more space for right-wing extremists to escalate their attacks on our communities.

Protest organizers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

NEIU's Student Government Association recently held a town hall to discuss the upcoming Spicer event. SGA President Melanie Glover described it as "a space designed to support students, a space designed for your voice to be heard, and a space for you," according to the NEIU Independent. One participant expressed concern that "when you give these people coverage, on any platform, large or small, I think that encourages violence and helps make their ability to grow that much better."

Another put it this way:

"To me, this is like a safe space. So why are we inviting people of this nature, that indirectly attack us, our parents and families, to come to a place like this, and enter our safe haven? Why are we not allowed a voice in our own safe space?"

This apparent consensus among activist students that giving right-wing speakers any opportunity to speak will increase the power of the far-right is baffling. If they really believed that giving people like Spicer "coverage, on any platform, large or small" was such a terrible idea, then the last thing they should do is hold town halls, protest, and make demands: These antics only make it likely that Spicer's remarks will actually attract more attention from the public, media, etc.

According to The College Fix, Spicer and Brazile's speaking fees were paid by a donor to the university. The administration has pledged to move forward with the discussion.

Not to anyone that has been paying attention.

TRANSLATION: I don't want to hear someone that has opinions that are different from mine because I'm such a hyper-sensitive snowflake, or I will roll into a ball, cry, whimper, pout and throw a infantile tantrum. Where's my puppy for my therapy?

    1. Marshal   6 years ago

Otter: They can't do that to our communities!

Boon: Right! Only we can do that to our communities!

Do they not know that Donna Brazile works for Fox News now?

    1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

      Does she? Lol.

  4. $park¥ is the Worst   6 years ago

"The role Spicer played—and that the Trump administration continues to play—in this violence is one of creating space for these acts to occur."

And we’ll prove it by tearing this place apart.

  5. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

I guess I'd better google "Sean Spicer".

    1. Marshal   6 years ago

      Try Sean Spicier instead.

  6. $park¥ is the Worst   6 years ago

Why are we not allowed a voice in our own safe space?

You do have a voice and you just used it, dummy. Unfortunately for you, voicing your displeasure is not always a sufficient condition for shutting things down.

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

I think by "voice" they mean the demonstrable power to force other people to heel.

    2. Mickey Rat   6 years ago

All appropriate consideration will be given to your request.

No, we will not cancel the program, you pathetic craven.

    3. croaker   6 years ago

In fact, it might give the man you hate most, who lives rent-free in your skull, the excuse to federalize all the MP units in the state's National Guard for deployment to universities where troublemakers make trouble.

  7. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

Spicer has consistently promoted policies like the Muslim ban, a border wall, family separation, mass deportations, banning trans people from serving in the military, and many other policies that have encouraged the violence that is taking over our world.

Is it me or have students gotten really shitty at writing left-wing manifestos?

    1. WoodChipperBob   6 years ago

      It's not you.

  8. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

The times they are a changin'.

But these social uses of the universities' resources also demonstrate the unchangeable reliance by men of power on the men and storehouses of knowledge: this makes the university functionally tied to society in new ways, revealing new potentialities, new levers for change. Fourth, the university is the only mainstream institution that is open to participation by individuals of nearly any viewpoint.

These, at least, are facts, no matter how dull the teaching, how paternalistic the rules, how irrelevant the research that goes on. Social relevance, the accessibility to knowledge, and internal openness--these together make the university a potential base and agency in a movement of social change.

  9. Mickey Rat   6 years ago

How did our society raise a bunch of young adults who beg and plead to be infantilized?

    1. SQRLSY One   6 years ago

Self esteem therapy! If you say things that make me feel BAD, you must BE bad! If you say things that make me feel GOOD, then you are GOOD! Goodness is good, and badness is bad. QED!

      1. Azathoth!!   6 years ago

That's an astounding amount of self awareness, SQRLSY.

There may actually be some small hope for you.

    2. Rev. Arthur L. Kirkland   6 years ago

By accrediting and funding schools such as Liberty, Franciscan, Oral Roberts, Hillsdale, and Ouachita Baptist.

      1. John   6 years ago

Look Rev, you couldn't get into the special ed program at your local community college. Morons like you need to leave the debate about college to people who have actually attended college.

Angry, woke, and stupid and no way to go through life son.

        1. Rev. Arthur L. Kirkland   6 years ago

Do you contend that schools that teach nonsense -- storks deliver babies; evolution is a hoax from hell; the moon is made of green cheese; our planet was formed from scratch by supernatural forces in less than a week and is a few thousand years old; one plus one equals four and one-half -- should be accredited by mainstream America and funded by taxpayers?

If so, to what do you ascribe this substandard thinking? Childhood indoctrination you just couldn't shake, unblinking tribalism, or something even dumber?

          1. Earth Skeptic   6 years ago

So now tell us how many woke students from "real" universities can explain the data and reasoning that underly the scientific understanding that you apparently prefer. And no excuses for time spent in drum circles or marching to fulfill activist degree requirements.

Those snowflakes are just as dimwitted, but oh so much more sensitive, right?

          2. Juice   6 years ago

One of these is not like the others. Hillsdale College does not have a religiously based curriculum and it's highly rated as a liberal arts college on many lists that rank such things.

          3. Juice   6 years ago

should be accredited by mainstream America and funded by taxpayers

Oh, and you can rest easy that Hillsdale receives none of your tax dollars (assuming you pay taxes, which may not be the case).

      2. Mickey Rat   6 years ago

But the infantile student is going to Northeastern.

        1. Mickey Rat   6 years ago

          ...Illinois

      3. WoodChipperBob   6 years ago

I notice that you very cleverly left out consistently highly-ranked religious institutions like Georgetown, Notre Dame, and Boston College (to name a just a few). It's like you're cherry picking the lower-ranked religious institutions to lend your argument more credibility, and think that nobody will notice. And you're doing a bad job of cherry picking, by inaccurately including Hillsdale (not religious and well-ranked), and Franciscan (mid-ranked nationally, highly-ranked regionally).

And then there's the issue that you're blaming funding of these religious (and the non-religious one) institutions (which, as a society, we really don't fund) for the infantilized students at other schools. What do you think the mechanism is that makes that work?

        1. Rev. Arthur L. Kirkland   6 years ago

Does Georgetown teach creationism? I gave it more credit.

You are wrong about Hillsdale’s religiosity. It is ranked in the mid-60s among “national liberal arts colleges, which likely means between 150 and 200 in overall rankings. I do not regard it to be highly ranked. It’s between St. Olaf and Knox, and below (barely) Wheaton.

I was not blaming the goober factories for problems at better schools. I was noting that the most infantilized students and environments are found on the many censorship-shackled, nonsense-teaching, snowflake-coddling, low-quality, conservative campuses. And that schools that teach nonsense should not be accredited by the mainstream academic community.

          1. Azathoth!!   6 years ago

The most infantilized students and environments are found on the many censorship-shackled, nonsense-teaching, snowflake-coddling, low-quality, leftist infested institutions of 'higher' learning.

Why do you think your soft brain is so comfortable aping them?

For you, Artie, 'retard' would be a great leap upward.

          2. EISTAU Gree-Vance   6 years ago

“Schools that teach nonsense should not be accredited”..........

Haha. We got one called evergreen here in Seattle that’s a serious fountain of nonsense. Preaching snowflake hate and intolerance on the taxpayer dime.

You might be on to something, old man. Haha.

  10. Fist of Etiquette   6 years ago

Protest organizers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

They couldn't figure out how to translate red-faced foot stomping into an email.

I hate to break it to them, but government is violence. No matter which team - Spicer's or Brazile's - the policies are backed by violence.

    1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

They don't care about violence per se.

Consider they think opposing speech is violence, yet they will bust into a class room to voice their opposition.

I wonder if they will be a bit remorseful of their behavior when they are 50.

      1. BYODB   6 years ago

Never expect them to acknowledge that if speech is violence, they themselves are the most violent. They will not be constrained by the rules they expect others to follow, for theirs is the only right viewpoint.

What a coincidence, a person that thinks they are the sole heir of righteousness.

  11. Enjoy Every Sandwich   6 years ago

And to think, come next year most of these wankers will be permitted to vote and their votes will count every bit as much as that of fully functioning adults.

    1. WoodChipperBob   6 years ago

Most of these wankers are already old enough to vote. But you can rest easy, because when they became old enough to vote, they joined a whole lot of other people like them whose votes count every bit as much as those of fully functioning adults. Wait. I don't think that will contribute to you resting easy.

"Spicer has consistently promoted policies like the Muslim ban, a border wall, family separation, mass deportations ..."

Anyone who has ever criticized "SJW snowflakes" needs to pay attention. Far from being our enemies, these young progressive activists are, in fact, natural allies for us Koch / Reason libertarians. I mean, it's right there in front of you — literally the first things they mention are the Drumpf regime's policies that conflict with open borders.

Of course they didn't respond. It takes a lot of energy to be so much courageous. Probably taking a little nap.

  15. Rev. Arthur L. Kirkland   6 years ago

Sean Spicer will attract the largest crowd in the history of that institution. Period.

Unless Trump diverts a hurricane with a Sharpie and blows away all of Northeastern's liberal elitist fakes, of course.

  16. Marshal   6 years ago

    But some student activists

Wait...student activists? That certainly sounds different from "fainting couch" conservatives.

    1. BYODB   6 years ago

Where do these students find time for activism during their classes?

Must not have enough class work to keep them busy, so I'm assuming they aren't engineering students or anything useful like that.

      1. John   6 years ago

They get class credit for their hate studies majors.

        1. BYODB   6 years ago

That's probably true since I would expect a lot of them are probably on a path that results in them never leaving University. Not all doctorates are born equal, but you can always teach.

I know more than a few PhD people who can't even teach, and it's probably not a coincidence that the one's living off trust funds have the most useless doctorates.

"I don't like your ideas, and if you're allowed to express them, then you might convince other people too."

That's been the rationale behind censorship forever, right?

  20. Longtobefree   6 years ago

Note to all employers: Northeastern Illinois University graduates are incapable of rational thought, considering all points of view, or contributing to any dialogue leading to other than a foregone conclusion. Hire them at your peril.

    1. Eddy   6 years ago

No, the ones with time to rant in public are the dangerous hires - you ought not to paint everybody with the same broad brush.

      1. Marshal   6 years ago

With rare exceptions (Antioch, Yale, etc) employers shouldn't avoid schools. They should avoid majors no matter what school they come from.

  21. scape   6 years ago

I remember a debate at the University of Oklahoma in the late 80s or early 90’s between a lefty/liberal (can’t remember who) and G. Gordon Liddy about military intervention and foreign policy. It might’ve been just after the start of the First Gulf War. They packed a 1,000 seat auditorium and had some anti-Liddy protesters and signs outside. On the scale of left-wing hate, Liddy must have been a 9 or 10 at the time and I don’t think Spicer rates that high now.

Do you know what those little, commie, snowflake, bastards in the audience did? They listened to the debate, had a confrontational Q&A and went home.

    1. Ray McKigney   6 years ago

I think the lefty participant was Timothy Leary.

      1. Eddy   6 years ago

If you can remember that debate, you weren't there.

  22. Earth Skeptic   6 years ago

I don't know who to despise more, the whining, red-faced ultra-woke students, the equally delusional activist faculty, or the spineless administrators and trustees. Maybe just nuke 'em all?

  23. Eddy   6 years ago

I'm not sure if they're genuinely frightened of Sean Spice-Rack, or if they're using fashionable academic nonsense theories to pre-emptively justify violence against him - if he's being violent, then being violent against him is merely self-defense, after all.

  24. icannotread   6 years ago

If CDA 230 is removed all of these stupid kids would have to purchase their own domains, buy hosting, and post their dumb opinions on their own websites. Or, they could write letters or send emails.
Seems like getting rid of 230 has a lot of benefits. Like not hearing everyone complain about bullshit.

  25. lap83   6 years ago

"Any platform he is provided...creates more space for right-wing extremists to escalate their attacks on our communities."

No one ever asks them, what in the actual f*** do you mean? They use his speech platform provided by the college to launch missiles at students innocently studying in the next room? Oh. No? You mean you can't actually think of a real life example of the claim you're suggesting? Then maybe shut up and stop whining?
