Brickbat: Hard Labor

Diana Sanchez spent five hours in labor, screaming in pain and calling for help, before giving birth in a Denver jail cell last year. In a statement, the sheriff's office noted that the cell was in the jail's medical unit but says it has changed its policies so "pregnant inmates who are in any stage of labor are now transported immediately to the hospital."

Reading these sorts of stories, I always wonder if the woman has been in jail for over nine months. In other words, which guard is the father and rapist?

I say rapist because I’m doubtful of the possibility of consent while in custody. It’s like those people handcuffed and shoved into the back of a squad car giving “consent.”

They can’t punish anyone because there’s no precedent for punishing anyone.

So imposing training would be unprecedented and forgiven under qualified immunity. But the second time someone imposed training on recalcitrant cops, there would be no qualified immunity and the cops could beat the snot out of the trainer, for which *they* would get qualified immunity.

Jail are only about punishment. Not rehab, or cure, or any form of empowerment so as to prevent you from doing dumb things to land yourself back once you leave. They need prisoners because that is their business, so recidivists and strike outs welcome. They have no incentive to do otherwise.

If you are having problems of a medical nature and are in pain, so much the better. I've known patients to die as a direct result of a jail not responding to their complaints and taking their sweet time to decide they needed to go to a hospital.

My first advise to is so the hell out of jail; and if you can't manage that, don't get sick there. If you do, good luck, because your're going to need it.
