A new sort of sex scare is taking hold. This time—after decades of folks freaking out over the opposite—it's young people abstaining from sex that has the youth-panic pundits and other chattering-class types fretting.
An article and accompanying chart in The Washington Post sparked off the latest flurry of concerned commentary. The latest General Social Survey (GSS) found that the number of 18- to 30-year-olds who hadn't had sex in the last year rose for both men and women between 2008 and 2018:
Currently celibate young men rose from around 10 percent in 2008 to around 28 percent last year.
Currently celibate young women rose from a little below 10 percent to 18 percent.
The GSS simply asked about sexual frequency and didn't pry into the causes, leaving assumptions to run wild and letting people project whatever political spin they wanted (#MeToo! the financial crisis! video games!).
Folks also speculated about the trend's potential consequences, ranging from the election of Donald Trump to the decriminalization of prostitution. Most of the concern came for the sex-free young men, whom no one seems to suspect are celibate by choice and/or content in their current arrangement. Rather, the assumption seems to be that this additional segment of sex-free young men is a sign and portender of any number of catastrophic things.
There are plenty of possible positive or neutral explanations for the increases, including people getting married at later ages and more people choosing to reject casual sexual encounters. (Keep in mind that the past few decades have also seen decreases in teen pregnancies, unintended pregnancies overall, abortions, and HIV infections.) But the Post article—which relies heavily on commentary from perennial generation doomsayer Jean Twenge—and social media commentators leapt right to imagining a new lost generation of young men, jobless and living in their parents' basements, unable to land dates or find love.
From there, it was a quick jump to talking about MAGA hats and hate crimes. Others blamed technology, social media, and porn.
Samuel Perry, a sociologist at Oklahoma University, corrected the record with regard to higher consumption of porn equating to less sex in real life. "Folks have been asking whether the decline in people (mostly men) having sex is due to #porn. Not likely," Perry tweeted.
Rather it seems the decline is among men NOT watching porn….Men who watch porn tend to have MORE sex, not less….
And of course people gotta remember that women are more likely to watch porn within the context of sexual relationships, as part of sexual activity. So it shouldn't be surprising that the women who view more porn also have more sex on average (i.e., cuz they watch w/a partner).
Economist Gray Kimbrough also suggested a reason to be skeptical of the data overall:
A lot of people have been passing around this "stunning chart," and it looks pretty dramatic. But I'd like to once again strongly warn anyone not to draw strong conclusions using only GSS data. https://t.co/I3LZtRd5ZJ
The GSS sample is only "a couple of thousand people every two years. And the questions aren't exactly constant across years," Kimbrough tweeted.

School choice in court in Wisconsin. "Once again, the state Department of Public Instruction is violating the law to harm private schools in the choice programs," says Libby Sobic, a Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty attorney suing the Department of Public Instruction over its decision not to allow "virtual instruction" to count toward classroom instruction hours. "Public schools all over the state are using online learning to expand student access to curriculum and as a way to avoid cancelling classes due to Wisconsin's winter weather. But [the department] will not give students at choice schools those same opportunities. It's unfair, wrong, and illegal."

New Jersey piano tuner can keep his home. The Institute for Justice helped secure a win for Charlie Birnbaum, a piano turner whose home was being threatened by eminent domain in New Jersey. A "state agency called the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority has been trying to take the home Charlie's parents first purchased in 1969 and replace it with…nothing. Literally nothing," writes IJ attorney Dan Alban.
Luckily, an appeals court sided with Birnbaum. "In a unanimous opinion, the court affirmed IJ's initial victory in this case, which followed a trial held back in 2016," explains Ablan. "The trial court found that the government's attempt to take Charlie's property without any credible plan for doing anything with it was a 'manifest abuse of the eminent domain power.'"

Will Robert Kraft be suspended over sex-solicitation charge? The Patriots owner has plead not guilty and is currently challenging the charge. If Kraft "wins in court, [NFL] Commissioner Roger Goodell will be faced with a major dilemma," writes Mike Florio at NBC Sports. "If a player were charged with solicitation of prostitution and cleared (whether on a technicality or on the merits), he'd likely face no punishment from the NFL….But that nuance will be lost when considering the league's common refrain that owners are held to a higher standard, and when realizing that multiple players who were never arrested or charged with anything have received significant suspensions."

Minor change from back then. Now everyone standing around the person drinking gets criminal charges, if the drinker over drinks and dies.
Of course, its not the politician's fault for raising drinking ages and implementing puritanical alcohol restrictions so kids dont know how to handle alcohol responsibly.

Actual, no kidding human trafficking can also be a voluntary transaction among consenting adults. A lot of people are paying good money to be trafficked.
Sure. It can be a bad situation when voluntarily entered into as well. But there is an important distinction to be made between people being tricked or forced into being transported somewhere where they will be forced to work in sex work or other jobs and people who pay to be smuggled into another country. Just like there is one to be made between consensual prostitution and sex slavery.
In regards to the increasing number of kids not getting any . . . this is an invitation to speculate and hypothesize, right?
My understanding is that gay men have sex more often, on average, than heterosexual couples.
The understanding is that lesbians report having sex less frequently, on average, than heterosexual couples.
This suggests that men desire to have sex more frequently than women, that women desire sex less frequently than men, and that in the case of heterosexuals, men are successful in getting sex from women more frequently than women want it.
Are we talking about rape culture or effective persuasion? Is there a difference between the two? Go have that argument by yourself. The point I'm making is that--regardless of whether it's consensual or awful--young men probably aren't as aggressive in pursuing sex with women as they used to be.
As recently as the 1970s, it was still widely thought, even in American culture, that raping your wife was both morally and legally unpossible. As millennial men have turned into sissies [As those attitudes have changed, over time], I suspect younger men have become more reluctant to insist and persist.
A beagle that won't chase a rabbit and just waits for the rabbit to jump in his mouth isn't likely to catch as many fish.
They've believe that pressuring women to have sex is both illegal and wrong.
Not long ago, plenty of women didn't even know they could have orgasms, and those who knew were taught that it was wrong to desire sex. When I was in boarding school, I knew a senior who would not believe that women could have orgasms.
Imagine the sexual world from his perspective. Why do women have sex? It's because they want babies, money, emotional attachment, etc.--but in that world, women don't have sex because they want sex itself. In that world-view, sex is something that men are supposed to inflict on women. They may eve believe that women get off on a sense of feeling overwhelmed, conquered, swept off their feet, and pursued.
No doubt, millennial men would consider that guy a rapist in a rape culture. He doesn't take the first "no" as the end of the game. On the other hand, rightly or wrongly, he is catching more rabbits than guys do today.
I knew a girl that wanted a job really bad. She was rejected, but she wouldn't stop. She kept calling the guy that interviewed her, trying to persuade him that he made a mistake. She bugged him for months. Eventually, they hired her. Biologists talk about "success" as having passed on your genes. Some ways of succeeding are morally wrong, but that doesn't mean you didn't get the job done.
If we're trying to explain fewer young guys getting the job done, changing attitudes might be a good place to look.
like in 7th grade the "smells like cologne leave it alone" thing was funny but later when you get into threesomes etc you find it really doesn't matter
As long as he ask permission at every step. Of course she always change her mind after the fact even if he does so jacked either way. Because woman have no agency. They're just dumb children. Less hassle to self serve. Glad I'm not coming to age now.
WASHINGTON ? At the heart of President Trump's negotiations with China is a troubling contradiction: The United States wants to use the trade talks to encourage the country to adopt a more market-oriented economy. But a key element of a prospective deal may end up reinforcing the economic power of the Chinese state.
Negotiators are still working out deal terms, but any agreement seems certain to involve China's promise to purchase hundreds of billions of dollars of American goods. For Mr. Trump, this is an essential element that will help reduce the United States' record trade deficit with China and bolster farmers and other constituencies hurt by his trade war.
Even NYT has to admit that Trump is using tariffs as a negotiation tactic and then needs to throw an unsubstantiated claim in to add some TDS flair.
The GSS results are only one data point-- but the NSFG (National Survey of Family Growth) and NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), both considerably larger surveys, also show rising sexlessness, albeit at a slower rate than the lower survey population and noisier GSS. There's reason for skepticism that the true path was staying still followed by a sharp increase, but one should almost certainly conclude that there has been an increase in sexlessness. However, staying still followed by a sharp increase at the start of a recession is consistent with a linear pattern of increasing sexlessness added to a cyclical pattern derived from the economy. (E.g., compared and contrast when several years of global temperature readings appear to remain stable then have a sharp increase; in that case there are short periodic oscillations that could explain such a pattern, consistent with summing a sine wave with a linear trend. Also note different reactions to those number among different groups.)
In addition, plenty of other results besides those three studies confirm a number of things at least correlated with decreasing sexual rates among young adults (notably but not limited to marriage rates and birth rates.)
This does seem to be a case of "Can I Believe It?" versus "Must I Believe It?"
Three-quarters of a million people would likely lose their food stamps later this year under a new proposal by the Trump administration. The goal is to encourage able-bodied adults to go to work and get off government aid. But opponents predict people would go hungry instead, if the rule goes into effect.
Everything of success by the Trump Administration is random. See.
If there's one thing I've learned from reading Mr. Buttplug and Rev. Kirkland's posts, it's that poor people nearly always vote Republican. So if Drumpf does this he'd be hurting his own supporters.
Craig Gundersen, a professor of agriculture and consumer economics at the University of Illinois, questions the administration's assertion that imposing work requirements will move more SNAP recipients into the labor force. He says there's no evidence that receiving food stamps discourages work.
"This idea that people are ripping off the system or something, that's just not true," he says. In fact, food stamp benefits are structured to encourage work, he says, by reducing benefits gradually as income grows.
Wait... this guy is an economist and he hasn't yet figured out that nearly everybody works out of necessity and not desire?
"In Kansas and Mississippi (both non-expansion states with low eligibility levels for parents), meeting Medicaid work requirements through 20 hours of work per week at minimum wage could lead to loss of Medicaid eligibility."
Sounds good. 20 hours of minimum wage work per week. Should be plenty for diabetics to get their insulin now, right?
Jussie Smollett was doubly skewered last night, first by comedian Chris Rock at the NAACP Image Awards, and second by a brutal sketch on "Saturday Night Live." The actor recently made headlines again when Chicago PD announced all charges had been dropped against him after he alleged two men attacked him in a potential hate crime.
See, Jussie Smollett has been taken into the Lefty fold. They only do this for their trusted soldiers against MAGA.
Lefties are now choosing who to save and who must be destroyed. Smollett took a plea bargain and that is why the state charges were dropped. The charges were NOT dropped because he is innocent.
This is a serious problem for us Koch / Reason libertarians since democratic socialists like AOC largely agree with us on our most important issue ? immigration. Perhaps Shikha Dalmia could start writing regular pro-AOC columns to combat this.

----Fake Zuckerberg
That's the gist of it although the explanation is important. It isn't that Facebook needs to rent seek to double down on its dominance. I doubt Facebook can get its p/e ratio where it wants given the fundamentals of their business. A year ago, the S&P 500 had a p/e around 22, which is about where it is today. A year ago, FB's p/e was around 32--and it's now around 22, which means investors don't expect FB's earnings to grow in the future at a rate that's any higher than the weighted average of the S&P 500. That means they're missing out on about $200 billion in their market cap.
Two threats:
1) Crystal Clear
Advertisers won't let Facebook show the kind of content Facebook's users crave, but Facebook's future growth depends on showing content that users crave. All advertising based businesses have that issue--from radio to TV. The stuff on the major networks is tame, and if you want to see titties and guts, then you go to a ticket based movie theater or a subscription service like HBO.
It is against the Fair Housing Act and Civil Rights Act to not show housing listings to a black person because they're black, but Facebook's advertising algorithm makes that happen through targeted advertising. Why should Facebook be treated differently from a real estate broker who refuses to show listings to black people? The CRA makes it illegal to discriminate against people on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, national origin, etc. in public accommodations from housing and hotels to restaurants and retailers. But the reason advertisers pay Facebook such a pretty penny is because their platform makes it possible to only show such listings to people in specific demographics.
The Federal Housing Administration is already coming after Facebook and Twitter over the way their advertising algorithms (don't) show housing listings to people of color. Facebook desperately needs a regulatory justification for targeted advertising on the basis of demographic data--after all, their whole business model is built around targeted advertising.
I think the class action lawsuit guys are gonna have a field day!
I think charges of racism by Facebook's business model may be an even bigger liability from a public relations perspective than privacy invasion. Average people are probably more sensitive to charges of discrimination than they are to charges of having their privacy invaded.
Oh, and this story is more recent than that one you linked:
"Federal officials accused Facebook Inc. Thursday of unlawful discrimination by allowing real-estate companies to target potential customers by race, religion and other factors, and signaled that other online advertising platforms are in its crosshairs.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development said the social-media giant violated the Fair Housing Act "by restricting who can view housing-related ads."
HUD has sent letters to a number of technology companies, including Alphabet Inc. unit Google and Twitter Inc., asking for more information about their sophisticated advertising systems, an agency official said.
The National Fair Housing Alliance is an advocacy group.
HUD is another deal entirely. I think they found out about it because of actions of those advocacy groups. Once it gets in the papers, the bureaucrats feel like they need to do something about it. And that is one big can of worms!
I don't think it matters who is doing it if the whole business model is violating the Civil Rights Amendment. If they can't sell targeted advertising, they're just like television.
The advertisers are paying a premium because they only have to pay for the ads that are seen by chosen specific demographic. If they can't do that anymore, then they're not paying a premium--and there goes Facebook's business model.
Cultural forces shifting such that men go from exaggerating how much sex they have, to exaggerating how little sex they have, would be a pretty interesting and significant story, would it not?
The mainstream culture has spent the last few decades vilifying pretty much any aspect of male sexual behavior. It's not surprising that this would lead to either less male sexual behavior, or at the very least, less voluntary self-reported male sexual behavior...
"I expect a Nobel Prize for this stunning and original insight."
If you don't get one of the Nobel science prizes, would you settle for a Peace Prize? Just tell them you thought wistfully about peace sometime in the past year. Also, tell them you killed a lot of people.
I'd honestly be fine with all these migrants if we just stuck them in UN refugee camps and left them there like they do in Middle Eastern nations.
If we're going to allow third-world refuse to turn us into just another third-world shithole, we might as well emulate third-world humanitarian policies.
Darn kids either their screwing too much or not enough, no wonder their confused and give up on society. It also could be like most people they lie to survey takers or just figure its none of their business

She's wrong in what she said and the way she said it. Surely, the 22nd Amendment was about stopping someone like Roosevelt from ever sitting in the White House for so many terms again--even if it wasn't meant to prevent Roosevelt himself.
Anyway, my problem with AOC isn't that she's ignorant of history, per se. The problem is that she's a socialist. If she bombed a history test, that's pretty much beside the point to me.
It's a bit like criticizing a violent Klansman for using foul language in mixed company. He lynched people, perpetrated cross burnings to scare black neighbors away, and bombed a church--but we're criticizing him for using foul language?
She's a socialist. Her Green New Deal may cost as much as $90 trillion and would completely remake the American economy into a socialist one--with government ownership of industry, prices set by government bureaucrats, and redistributing wealth as primary objectives. If she picks her nose in public, too, I'm blind to that compared to the monumental edifice of her socialist stupidity.
I'd vote for an illiterate shithead over a socialist--so long as the illiterate shithead wasn't a socialist. If Trump is protectionist, an historical ignoramus, and whatever other awful things people can dig up, I'd still vote for him--instead of a libertarian--if the Democrats nominate someone who is a self-described socialist. Being an ignoramus on history is okay in a presidential candidate. Being a Socialist is unacceptable.
Twelve months ago I constantly had to go to the bathroom. I thought it was because I gave up soft drinks and was only drinking water. One day I had a stomachache. I was in bed for 4 days. The doctor's appointment was for a Wednesday. I got sick and went to emergency room on a Monday. I was told my blood sugar level was 810 and I have diabetes. I was taking taking metformin 1000 mg twice daily. It Wasn't really helping Last year, a family friend told me about Organic Herbal clinic and their successful Diabetes TREATMENT, I visited their website ww w . organicherbalclinic. co m and ordered their Diabetes Formula, i am happy to report the treatment effectively treated and reversed my Diabetes, most of the symptoms stopped, I'm able to eat well, sleep well and exercise regularly., I'm pretty active now and my attitude is extremely positive.

On the sex thing... I'm an early 30 something who broke up with my girlfriend of 6 years about a year ago... I haven't been getting laid a TON, but I have got laid a few times.
With the whole porn connection... I dunno man. If porn didn't exist, I REALLY feel like I would waste a lot more of my time chasing the real thing. LOL Just sayin'.
But I do feel the "vibe" has somehow changed even between when I was last single. It's harder somehow to get anywhere when one is out and about at bars... It's hard to describe. And I legitimately don't think it's just because I'm older. I still look like I'm in my mid 20s according to everybody, because I have a baby face, not fat, not balding, etc, hence get "action" from 20 something girls still. But somehow it's just not the same, and have heard many others comment on it too.
I really do think it is the weird digital isolation thing with a lot of people. Less actual going out, and being more isolated to your friend group maybe even when one is out. It's just different somehow, hard to put your finger on it.
I'm sure the legit basement dwelling stats aren't helping either, and that could be the partial explanation for both the men and women.
So millenials/Gen Z'ers are frigid prudes? Well that doesn't sound like a happy way to live. Is this just more nonsense stat misinterpretation by the media? Surely most folks live in the happy and healthy middle ground between sex maniac and unconditional stone cold abstinance? Actually I don't give a fuck about anyon else's sex life. I wish my sister got that before she announced loudly to me in front of her boyfriend that they do not have a sexual relationship. He was pretty embarrassed, but she is woke and everything so I guess that trumps dignity.
Honestly, depending on the how and why, this could be a good thing.
If it's because kids are becoming too socially dysfunctional to have relationships thanks to tech addiction or whatever other weird shit it's bad... But if people are becoming a little more moral again and choosy, and not being raging whores all the time like the boomers and beyond were, that's a positive thing.
Whether hedonists like it or not, psychological study after study has shown a lot of life time negative effects on being able to form lasting bonds from having too many sexual partners... Especially in women. Basically slutting around in HS and college ruins them for life, and makes them incapable of forming lasting pair bonds, which is what people really desire in life.

Well, they have been told since kindergarten that sex is dangerous.
An interesting difference is that I remember a Parade of Horribles about sex was the common tactic among adults while I grew up.
We young people still pursued sex with women like crazy. In fact, I seem to recall a catch phrase given to us Gen Xers "Sex on the brain".
"They may eve believe that women get off on a sense of feeling overwhelmed, conquered, swept off their feet, and pursued."
uhhh... many women are actually like this.
Probably a lot more than will openly admit it.
I've not met a woman who did not want to be dominated sexually. It seems odd but it is a fairly consistent pattern.
A beagle chasing a rabbit doesn't get accused of rape.
Some sex pursuing speech is considered rape and some of those looks- Nothing but rape.
But if he catches fishes he can do as he wishes?
If it smells like fish, eat all you wish?
like in 7th grade the "smells like cologne leave it alone" thing was funny but later when you get into threesomes etc you find it really doesn't matter
You can wish in one hand, and crap in the other.
See which one gets filled up first!
As long as he ask permission at every step. Of course she always change her mind after the fact even if he does so jacked either way. Because woman have no agency. They're just dumb children. Less hassle to self serve. Glad I'm not coming to age now.
Dave Chappelle and the "Love Contract" was decades before its time.
The fact that there seems to be a young person culture that brags about being Incels, leads me to think you are on to something Ken.
>>>men are successful in getting sex from women more frequently than women want it.
in the 80s --> 90s it was 50/50 ...
China Purchases Could Undercut Trump's Larger Trade Goal
More Than 750,000 Could Lose Food Stamps Under Trump Administration Proposal
He has a dream job. He gets to indoctrinate young adults in the way of the Lefty and charges them far more than $15 an hour for the job.
Everyone has a dream job like that, right?
He says there's no evidence that receiving food stamps discourages work.
In fact, food stamp benefits are structured to encourage work, he says, by reducing benefits gradually as income grows.
LOL, Jesus, talk about a self-own.
So my understanding of this is that ABAWDs only receive benefits because their state's governors have waived the work requirements.
All Perdue and Trump seem to be doing is to encourage the governors to not waive those requirements any longer. This isn't likely going to change anything. NPR hardly needs an excuse to continue pushing the narrative of the welfare state.
SJWs ruin everything.
That's just not true. They've given us opportunities for some pretty good parody over the years.
Their tears are the most delicious.

Jussie Smollett 'Saturday Night Live' Sketch Absolutely Roasts the 'Empire' Actor
He didn't take a plea. They just dropped the xharges
Important piece from Vox explaining why AOC's approval ratings might be lower than they should be.
How conservative media is dragging down AOC's poll numbers

2) Emerging
The Federal Housing Administration is already coming after Facebook
Facebook responds.
I wasn't aware this was happening. Talk about Pandora's Box!
I'm suing whoever sends me all of those male enhancement emails. It's because I'm white, right?
----WSJ, March 29, 2019
http://www.wsj.com/articles/u-.....553775078?
The National Fair Housing Alliance is an advocacy group.
HUD is another deal entirely. I think they found out about it because of actions of those advocacy groups. Once it gets in the papers, the bureaucrats feel like they need to do something about it. And that is one big can of worms!
Seems like the real estate companies are the ones doing the discriminating.
The Great Sex Recession may have another fundamental flaw: EVERYBODY LIES ABOUT SEX.
I expect a Nobel Prize for this stunning and original insight.

Good luck blocking every VPN. And anyone using ProtonMail will know what a VPN is. As usual, this kind of ban will only result in everyday citizens being inconvenienced or even oppressed, while actual criminals will carry on smoothly.

Ocasio-Cortez falsely says GOP changed Constitution to block FDR from re-election
Wait for AOC defenders to try and defend this retard lady.
FDR was elected to a 4th term in 1944 and died April 1945.
So what's her end game? Another President for Life?
If only they had. But I don't think they controlled nearly enough state legislatures at the time.
Does she not realize that FDR died in office? Right after a third reelection?
Fourth.
She might be as dumb as the guy who thought Guam would tip over. It's a race to the bottom.
