The Great Democratic Cave on Border Enforcement
Trump won much more than the Democrats did.
Congressional Republicans and Democrats have apparently cut a deal on funding border enforcement. So unless President Trump—who says

he's "unhappy" with the terms—walks away and snatches defeat from the jaws of victory, a government shutdown come Friday is not in the cards. However, the question is whether after all of the drama of the last few months, did Democrats even remotely advance the cause of a sane and humane immigration enforcement policy?
Liberal commentators would have you believe that they did because Trump didn't get the $5 billion-plus he was demanding for his border "barrier." That may be right, but the fact of the matter is that he got something and the Democrats got nothing at all, as I note in my latest column at The Week.
The sticking point that nearly derailed the talks over the weekend concerned funding for detention beds to house unauthorized immigrants picked up at the border and rounded up from the interior. Given that Trump has illegally diverted funds for this end, one would have thought the Democrats would use the funding fight to hold the line and insist on starving the ICE beast.
Think again.
So terrified were the Democrats about being blamed for the next shutdown, that they approved pretty much the same levels of detention bed funding as the Republican-controlled Congress did last year.
Nor was it their only capitulation.
Go here to read about the Democrats' other surrenders, including the fact that they didn't even bring up the issue of legalizing Dreamers. They played on Trump's turf and came away empty.

Detention "beds?" I thought they were being kept in simple "cages?"
I think they mean bedding , straw for the cage. And those cute little water bottles attached to the side.
And hamster wheels for exercise
Why are y'all picking on Crusty?
As if Crusty would realize.
Water? I though illegals were starving and dying of thirst by the thousands.
I thought they were being kept in simple "cages?"
36 cages is known as a cattle car, one of the lesser-known imperial units.
18 cattle cars are a death train.
Greater Germany scoffs at your Imperial units. In Germany it's 10 undesirables to the cage, 10 cages to the cars, 10 cars to the section and 10 sections to the Death Train. And an armored caboose.

Excuse me, but I think you meant to say, "Pelosi embarrassed Trump! Ha ha!"

You have to click through two articles to get to this from the hill: Senate DHS bill includes $1.6 billion for 'fencing' on border
So, status quo with the beds and current policy, but there will be a longer stretch of fence?
I bet that 1.6 doesn't end up covering 20 miles.
You sound really butt hurt.
Good take, Simple John!
You do. Don't post angry
I do what?
Sound butt hurt and angry all of the time. Cheer up
Oh. okay. Yiu are so bad at this, John
There you are being all negative again.
"Senate DHS bill includes $1.6 billion for 'fencing' on border"
Foil, epee, or saber?
If Dalmia isn't happy, then I support the agreement.
To Dems it's a win simply because they kept Trump from getting a win.
But Dalmia's blues are a slight silver lining.
He got a win. The wall that is built won't go away. And he can get the funds to build more later. Now that Democrats have agreed to fund some of it it will be harder to not fund more later
Democrats: "The Wall is immoral! .... Except for that 65 miles we voted for last time. That part was fine."
That's why they lose.
And Trump is going to spend the money anyway.
We Koch / Reason libertarians cannot give up on the Democrats just because they don't win every battle. Sure, in a perfect world, every Democrat in Congress would pledge to support open borders and oppose every white nationalist "border security" proposal. But the party isn't quite there yet. Still, they're infinitely better than the Republicans on the issue.
Just wait until 2020, when I predict the Democratic Presidential nominee will campaign and win on an open borders platform.
A-, Good work OBL, you're make the best Liberal arguments!
"So, all in all, Trump got more money for a border barrier, enhanced border security, and increased detention capacity. What did Democrats get? Absolutely nothing. Zilch. Nada."
So democrats don't want enhanced border security and all the rest?
Haven't you been paying attention? Although they're not yet at the point where they can explicitly embrace open borders, the Democrats are clearly moving in that direction. It's one of the few positive developments of the Drumpf years.
I'm told it was Trump that caved.
See, this is why the zealots won't let us have an actual government. Any compromise, any hint of working together on something, and the zealots on both sides curse their representatives because they didn't stay full zealot on EVERY SINGLE POINT OF DISCUSSION.
The hardcores on both sides don't want representative government, they want tyranny. In their flavor only, please.
Pretty much this. Trump got what he could and the Democrats gave him what they had to. It's how government is supposed to work. But both sides just want everything because FYTIW
Question: Who is less libertarian --- Dalmia or former Reason writer and now AOC bootlicker Weigel?
Only Troo libertarians get to judge the libertarians of others.
You tell em Crusty.
I would love to give citizenship to DREAMers. But they need to renounce welfare and promote freedom. Otherwise they will just elect more AOCs and force me to work in their Soylent Green factories.
They are already voting illegally anyway. So what difference does it make?
Just say no to Soylent Green factories!
Come join my outfit and polish my monocles!
Soylent Green is the only way to stop cow farts.
Soylent Steaks are clearly the way to go.
Also, in an interesting bit of trivia, the US was severely over populated in the original novel, "Make Room! Make Room!"
Set in the future 1999, ""Census says United States had biggest year ever, end-of-the-century, 344 million citizens."

At least the Soylent Green will have hot peppers.
"I would love to give citizenship to DREAMers. "
I'd love it too if I got to pick the country.
Just look at Puerto Rico. The place has been a blighted slum since the hurricane swept away all the island's wind and solar toys on its way to not even scratching the nuclear reactors just south of Houston. There is the Starnesville Noo Yawkers in 14th Street doorknocker earrings aspire to make of America. Heck, Lolita Lebr?n could be a Noo Yawk congresscritter nowadays.
I am still waiting for an explanation from the OBC crowd, why we shouldn't be extending all gov't programs (MediCaid/SNAP/Section 8/LIHEAP/WIC/Etc.) to illegal aliens
Because you should be cutting them for the native-born instead. Duh.
I mean, was that supposed to be hard?

"That may be right, but the fact of the matter is that he got something and the Democrats got nothing at all"
So basically, The Art of the Deal.
This part is hilarious. Trump offered a deal for DACA and $5 billion for the Wall. The Democrats really did negotiate themselves into a worse position.
Yup.
Trump really does deserve to be President. We wanted someone to stop the Lefties and he is almost single handedly doing that.
So the Democrats screwed the DACA people so they could only partially rather than fully fund the wall. Yeah, that makes sense.
I love how you treat Republicans as if they were retarded invalids incapable of voting for things themselves.
"The sticking point that nearly derailed the talks over the weekend concerned funding for detention beds to house unauthorized immigrants picked up at the border and rounded up from the interior. 1) By limiting the number of beds available, they're effectively limiting the Trump administration to prioritize deporting convicted felons, especially those who are deported as they exit our prisons. Anyone who is in favor of letting Dreamers or illegal aliens simply seeking to work here stay, this is a victory. If you base your criticism on Trump's willingness to violate the law, then that's an argument for impeachment--not a criticism of the deal itself, which is all about making law.
2) Trump offered to give Dreamers a three year reprieve, and Nancy Pelosi shot it down with extreme prejudice. The reason she did that is because neither Nancy Pelosi nor the Democrats give a shit abou the Dreamers. In fact, judging by their respective actions, Trump may, arguably, care more about the Dreamers than Nancy Pelosi. She certainly got less for them now than Trump offered her during the shutdown.
did Democrats even remotely advance the cause of a sane and humane immigration enforcement policy?
Wrong cause. The goal should be a policy that is just and advantageous to the citizens of the United States. To the extent that we can also make the policy humane towards aspiring immigrants, that's a plus. To the extent that the policy is "sane" in the opinion of Shikha, that would be a failure.
America First!
Eh, if we forget about the human beings and their welfare (which of course we will, they're just Hispanics), anything that doesn't include Trump's specific wall demand du jour is a victory for Democrats, as he will either shut down the government again or be known from Coulter to shining Hannity as a loser, and he will feel like a loser.
racebaitertony joins racebaiterjeff
Because Trump's Wall bullshit has nothing to do with race. It's about national security. Just like the Muslim ban.
Perhaps you're a methed-out white Bible thumping moron. You're probably right--they'll never come for you.
And racebaitertony delivers racebaiting right on schedule!

Sad Shikha is the Best Shikha.
Winning.
And without reading her article, I think she's actually right that the God Emperor has won again!
By funding some wall, their whole argument about walls being evil goes out the window. Trump got them to buy into *some* wall.
It's like the old old joke about "will you have sex with me for a million dollars?" They've already established they'll buy walls too, now we're just haggling over how much wall.
And Trump will use defense dollars and emergency dollars to fund much more of the wall than the token the Dems have offered.
Looks like The Wall is coming.
Next up, Draining the Deep State.
MAGA
You people really have no idea how idiotic you sound talking about the "wall" do you? If only your parents had discovered the value of barriers before they conceived.
"You people really have no idea how idiotic you sound talking about the "wall" do you?"
The Projection is strong with racebaitertony.
It's swell that thanks to Reason Shikha has journalist credentials in the looter press. Still, anyone able to search "Pakistani-Indian fence" will notice a barrier not so different erected to keep Hindus and Moslems from filling newspapers with news of gunfights and bloody murders after WWII. Now that the fence is being upgraded and the violence has abated somewhat, how about an article on how this is all thanks to uninspected entry.
