ennessee state Rep. Antonio Parkinson, a Democrat from Memphis, says he's heard plenty of stories from school principals back home about parents showing up at school wearing pajamas or clothes with foul language on them or skimpy clothing leaving "body parts hanging out." He has proposed a bill that would tell schools to create a "code of conduct" for adults who have to come to school, including a dress code.

There are just some adults with no sense of civility or appropriate presentation. Polite behavior and dress are social lubricants that work only marginally at best, but it is better than pouring sand in the gears.

I think that goes way too far! However I do sympathize with the idea adults should come in as role models, and not send kids the message "adults can do everything that we deemed immoral for you because they're older" because that implies that once one grows up, one can just throw away any rules they learned as children, or that moral standards and decorum are merely arbitrary and mean nothing in the "adult world" when in fact, they do! Adults can't just go into a job in skanky clothes or PJ's!

ALoR, I think you hit it about the right. It goes too far to turn it into some sort of regulation, but the message needs to be conveyed to the next generation about "a time and a place".

I (very briefly) taught high school, and one day entered a class to see two students in a pretty heavy makeout session. The answer to the inevitable "why not" was: you need to practice how to behave in public; if you do that in a job setting in a few years, you may well find yourself out of work pretty quickly.

Mom and Dad dropping off the kids need to try to set an example. A school is essentially a place of business, not their living room, and not a dark bar.

I knew a kid in high school who damn near had sex several times a day at his locker during passing period. He and his lady would have their tongues down their throat, and dude's other hand was clear up her shirt - this was multiple times a day. This was in 1990-92. It was fucking hilarious.

I don't think I've ever objected to anyone wearing skimpy clothing. I think sometimes people believe they have the figure to pull off an outfit when they clearly do not, but it still doesn't "offend" me.

I wonder what this state rep would think of nudists.

And what happens if the parent is turned away at the door for a dress code violation? Does the school keep the kid, perhaps overnight? Check the kid into a hotel until their parents are presentable? Call CPS and have the kid taken away from the parents?

How exactly would a school lawfully refuse to give the kid's legal, custodial guardian access to the kid? Seems to me that the parents would have a decent case for kidnapping charges.

A complete waste of time and money for everyone except the lawyers who will get rich in the inevitable lawsuit. Parkinson should be fired just for suggesting something so blatantly unconstitutional.
