Shutdown Leaves No Money for FBI Snitches and Drug Buys: Reason Roundup
Also, they have no tires?

Snitches get no pay during shutdown. The partial government shutdown hasn't just hurt airport security theater. The drug war is suffering too: FBI agents are complaining that they don't even the funds to pay snitches or to buy drugs in undercover stings.
These complaints come up in a 72-page FBI Agents Association report in which anonymous agents talk about the shutdown's effect on FBI operations. It has "stripped the department of the ability to buy drugs for narcotics busts and pay confidential informants," notes NBC News. "Not being able to pay confidential human sources risks losing them and the information they provide forever," one agent says.
Another complains that agents had to take a brief break from "using government funds to purchase narcotics or firearms from gang members," while a third is upset that there's no money to "conduct controlled narcotics purchases." Yet another's lament:
[W]e are going to be unable to conduct any controlled purchases of illicit drugs because the FBI and our partner…have no evidence purchase funds available.
Throughout the report, agents object to a lack of funds for paying "confidential human sources" and for fighting the war on drugs. The shutdown may also be affecting the FBI's ability to give overtime pay to state and local cops working with them on drug and prostitution stings.
In addition, the bureau seems to be running out of DNA tests and tires:
At least one agent complains about not being able to protect oil and gas industry representatives:
The Senate is supposed to vote today on two separate shutdown-ending measures—one backed by Republicans, one backed by Democrats, and neither expected to pass.

New York state prisons are indefinitely holding post-release prisoners because there's not enough room in supportive housing facilities. Now lawyers for six men have filed a federal lawsuit "to force Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to address a shortage of housing for people with serious mental illnesses who need help adjusting to life outside prison walls," The New York Times reports.

Major layoffs are happening at BuzzFeed, Verizon, and Gannett. BuzzFeed is set to lay off 15 percent of its staff—about 220 employees. The news was reported by The Wall Street Journal yesterday and later confirmed by BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti. The company saw double digit growth in 2018 but still failed to meet revenue targets.
Yesterday also saw an announcement from Verizon that its media division—which includes HuffPost, Yahoo, and AOL—will cut 7 percent of its employees. And Gannett is laying off newspaper staff around the country.

FBI agents are complaining that they don't even the funds to pay snitches or to buy drugs in undercover stings.
Does this mean crime is going down because of the shutdown???
Shouldn't the purchase of drugs in stings be a zero sum thing? They don't let the sellers keep the money indefinitely, do they? Where's the leakage that requires them to replace the money with fresh funds?
I believe they do lose that money fairly frequently.
Lose, or "lose?"
Sorry, "loose that money."
Inflation?
Hello.
Harris a lying progressive with no principles.
News at 11,
The Dems wanted a perfect match for Trump.
You seem to believe they found one.
The real worry is if there is no money left for snitches how are they going to pay the doctor for their stiches?
BuzzFeed is set to lay off 15 percent of its staff?about 220 employees.
Buzzfeed employees should probably get their pink slips independently verified before trusting them.

Buzzfeed employs over 1,400 people?? I didn't know it took that many people to produce word salads.
Listicles don't write themselves... or do they?
It's ok, The Washington Post will reprint them.

Check the ash heap of history in a few days. That's where you'll find Maduro.

She may just give Trump a run for his money in the GOP primary.
I recently heard Harris referred to as "Jeff Sessions in a dress". Sounds about right.
Harris is a Grand Kleagle?
It's spelled Kegel, goofball.
She sure loves her some civil asset forfeiture.
A panel of federal judges this week ordered Virginia to adopt new state legislative district lines that are likely to significantly aid Democratic efforts to reclaim control of the House of Delegates.
They need the help.
New York state prisons are indefinitely holding post-release prisoners...
Soon they'll be sending in Snake Plissken.
It's getting really difficult to find any kind of downside to this government "shutdown."
And what's this about "hurting" airport security theater? I had to fly for work earlier this week and I didn't notice any difference.
"I had to fly for work earlier this week and I didn't notice any difference."
I flew roundtrip to a funeral this weekend in the Midwest. Out on Friday, back on Sunday, which are theoretically the heaviest travel days for the weekend. Both flights were full, but the security lines were shorter than normal. A lot shorter than normal.
...the security lines were shorter than normal. A lot shorter than normal.
If that's what they mean, then let's keep this shutdown going.
In the words you did not cherry-pick.
You've already revealed your "powers" of observation,
Lessons from a lifetime of gender policing.
The realities of differing realities.
When they say "gender policing" do they mean something like this only in a more official capacity?
That's especially disappointing so soon after the BuzzFeed Bombshell that marks the beginning of the end of the Drumpf regime.
The walls are closing in.
You could have went multiple directions with this one. I was expecting the "Drumpf economy" angle. Way to switch things up.
He could have noted that Trump has already added more 8-year debt than Obama did after 8 years.
The first President to increase deficits by over 40% (47%) in a single year, with a boom economy, after inheriting the longest recovery ever for an incoming President -- from Obama, who started from the second worst recession in almost 70 years.
A Republican New Deal on track to be worse than Dubya's.
But we should back off on Trump, in sympathy. He's now getting his ass kicked by two wimmin, as Coulter and Pelosi take turns forcing him to submit to their will.
He not only caved to Pelosi on SOTU, he said the SOTU is her prerogative one day after bellowing out one of his threats. Only one question remains. Of those two wimmin, which will get him to whimper first?
He could die on the border wall alone, even before Mueller drops his bombs.
It seems like she's angling more for the tough-on-crime than the "progressive prosecutor" angle.
which is probably the best strategy for defeating Trump.... getting through the dem primaries might be a different story.
Weezer Just Won #TBT by Releasing a Surprise Cover Album
Fudge yeah!
Here's hoping. They still have it in them, Everything Will Be Alright was pretty damn solid. So hopefully they move towards that more than Raditude or something. White Album was eh.
At the very least it got me into a fun Weezer/Spotify mood, which is fun.
I gave up on them after the Red Album. I really liked Maladroit, though. All these other ones you listed I didn't even know existed.
I didn't know the FBI was packed full of whiney little bitches. Also, what the fuck is up with the creepy kid drawings on that website? If I approached a random kid on the street they wouldn't give two fucks about the FBI. Some retarded adult probably told them that instead of drawing a picture of Pikachu, draw some BS picture for the FBI. Fuck off slavers.
Precisely what are you whining about now?
If government work is drying up, government workers can just learn to code or something. #Compassion
Reason finally took a break from immigration article after immigration article after immigration article to say a $15/hr minimum wage is counterproductive. Reason believes high taxes and lots of regulations hurt the economy and employment. Reason getting the open borders they demand will only happen if the AOCs of the world gain power. Guess what? Reason's desired political result will bring in a bunch of new workers that will now be priced out of the job market. Compassion toward would-be immigrants should also involve screaming just as loudly about things like that, but no, that's not what The Atlantic wants from anyone they hire from here.
My point isn't that a Libertarian isn't going to get elected President so you have to be Rep or Dem, but you do have to recognize what is actually happening and if you want to pile on anyone who opposes you on immigration and cut slack to those who agree with you on that one and only issue, you're empowering a political viewpoint you yourself believes will hurt the ones you are demanding not be hurt.
You're arguing short term reality, they're arguing long term libertopia. And I think most who think that way here would say that when you argue long term libertopia you don't have to worry about short term false dichotomy.
I also know there's people here old enough to have been deeply disappointed by both red and blue. I haven't been disappointed yet, my first presidential vote went to a guy pulling out of wars, reforming the criminal justice system, and challenging large unaccountable bureaucracies.
As the Democratic party implodes and becomes powerless in national politics, Libertarianism can absolutely be the counter to Nanny-State conservatism and fiscal spending sprees.
The powerless Democrats who launched a blue wave against Trump?
The powerless Democrats whose leader, Pelosi, has just humiliated Trump also?
The powerless Democrats who got 71% of voters to oppose Trump on using a shutdown threat for a wall -- which democrats got most voters oppose at all (even without a shutdown)
The powerless Democrats who got six Republicans to support their Senate shutdown bill on Thursday, versus ONE Democrat who supported Trump's bill? Do the math. Trump has now also lost the Senate.
I'm wondering if even Trumpsters may start laughing at your endless gushing and adoration of Trump's mediocrity. And his accelerating collapse.

Doesn't looked like that person learned shit. Maybe just one statement about how gender specific bathrooms are stupid. How gender specific classifications are generally worthless. But no. "aspiring tyrants like Trump". Fuck off.

Reason contributor Noah Berlatsky explains how MAGA hats are hate symbols.
You really need to read the whole thing. But this is my favorite line:
Exactly right. "MAGA" is literally the equivalent of "Completely remove anyone from this country who isn't a straight white cisgender Christian."
#BringBackBerlatsky
PS ? For more of Berlatsky's insightful left-libertarian analysis, also be sure to check out his piece Is the First Amendment too broad? The case for regulating hate speech in America.
Taken together, these two pieces make an interesting case that MAGA hats should be illegal. As a libertarian I'm not sure if I'm ready to endorse a complete ban on Drumpf-related apparel. But it is a worthwhile thing to at least consider.
Remember what MAGA means: "Make America Great Again" is a call for an America without all the people Trump despises.
Talk about projection.
Remember what MAGA means: "Make America Great Again" is a call for an America without all the people Trump despises.
Funny that this is the America these same people bring up every time they talk about raising taxes.
Poll Shows Majority Support for Medicare-for-All as 2020 Revs Up
I saw somewhere related to this poll that a large proportion of people with employer-provided insurance plans were under the misimpression that they'd get to keep their current insurance under a Medicare-for-all system, so that approval is not so well-informed as of yet.
Not to mention that there's been almost zero discussion of the level of taxation that would be required to sort of fund it. Right now the impression is that we're going to raise taxes on a couple dozen billionaires and those guys will pay for all of it.
If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. And, if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.
You'll just have to pay for it out of pocket in addition to paying for your fair share of Medicare-for-all. If you have an income above the median income, your fair share is going to involve paying for a few other families as well as your own.

Kamala Harris just said on Maddow that she believes in seeking the highest possible sentence for those who commit violence.
The horror, I actually agree with this woman about something.
Is Reason officially pro-violence now? Wouldn't be shocking, given that so-called "progressives" love fantasizing about murdering all of their opponents, and the frauds at Reason are starting to bother disguising their true "progressive" nature less and less all the time.
Just for future reference, is anyone that fantasizes about murdering their opponents a progressive?
No, there are others that do so as well, but you Stalin / Chairman Mao types do it by far more than anyone else.
So fantasizing about murdering your opponents is bad when someone who shares your political affiliation does it, but even more bad when someone who doesn't share your political affiliation does it because those people do it more?
I don't think that many people are aware that Stalin considered himself to be the world leader of progressivism.
See, for example, "Comrade Stalin - Leader of Progressive Mankind", Pravda, 1949.
Yeah, no better source than a Marxist website.
Or Pravda
(smirk)
Bernie Madoff is not a violent criminal. A guy who loses his temper and punches someone in a bar is. Should Madoff automatically recieve a lesser sentence than the guy who punches someone in a bar?
Harriss is a brutal half wit. Violence is certianly an agrrevating factor in a crime but it is not the only one or the definitive answer to what is a just sentence. And that is in addition to the fact that when you hear "violence" you think it means some MS 13 guy raping your daughter. When she says "violence" she means something much broader than that and likely includes a lot of things you would not agree with.
I honestly don't know much about her, I don't think I ever even heard of her until maybe about a year ago or so. It wouldn't surprise me much if she's generally an overzealous rogue prosecutor.
I don't think it's very likely that she can seriously come out on top of this massive clown car that's forming, but I've read that Mofo-bama apparently likes her a lot (and we know what the main reason for THAT is), and he's still the most venerated person in the democratic party today, so she might actually be dangerous.

Thank you Reason for not pantsshitting about the shutdown. This is what it means to be libertarian - so refreshing. Having said that, it's soon time to start up the government again. Immigrants need to show some love and appreciation or Trump's gonna get his stupid wall.
So Megan McCardle went on a long Twitter rant about the Covington case. I find her oddly fascinating because she is just smart enough not to be totally dismissed but still manages to be a virtue signaling half wit. After the usual throat clearing about the GOP's "refusal to face Trump's grave moral failures", McCardle then proceeds to admit that the kids are innocent and that what is happening to them totally unjust. Yet, the reporters who are doing it are good people but are "just doing bad things". Trump and his supporters are just bad people who won't accept his grave moral failures whatever those are. But people like Radley Balko who are spending hours examining old films of high school basketball games for signs of "white supremacy" to pin on these kids are good people who are just doing bad things. It is Megan's version of 'You know I love you babe it is just with that son of a bitch Johnson in the White House..."
Sorry Megan, people like Radley Balko and Matthew Dowd and the rest are bad people. If you devote your efforts to slandering innocent people because doing so fits your prejudices and you are too smug to admit you were wrong, you are a bad person. They are not irredemable. If they ever come to their senses and stop and apologize, they will no longer be bad people. But until they do, they can fairly be called bad people.
I kind of feel sorry for her. Her entire career and life depends upon telling whatever lies are necessary to defend her social circle and status. What a degrading sad life that must be. And all for what? A slightly above middle class life pontificating about subjects she barely understands in articles that no one of any importance reads and are forgotten within a week?
Speaking of Balko, what a worthless piece of shit he turned out to be.
It is terrible. What do you do about a person who often tells important truths but seems to completely lack any integrity? His post reason performance causes me to conclude that he really doesn't give a flying crap about police abuse issues. He just pretended to because it was an easy way to get ahead. The fact that he did tell the truth and do good work on those issues is just a case of a bad person doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. I honestly believe that had the circumstances been different and beying a police hack had been what he felt was the best way forward, he would have done that.
I suspect it has a lot more to do with the fact that his wife is a shitlib supremo, and he's cleaving toward her political views so she doesn't divorce him.
Who is his wife? I imagine he married a shit lib supremo because that is who he always was. and was just pretending to be something else to get ahead.
Liliana Segura. Just check out her Twitter feed and you'll understand.
She is just cute enough and Balko just enough of a doofus, I am willing to admit he might have gone Prog because it was his only chance to bang her.
She claims to be all about prison reform and long sentencing but then is also a batshit crazy Prog. It seems that her problem with US prisons is that the wrong people are in them.

As I said, the war against Lefty propaganda is being won after all. The media actually needs more non-Lefties to pay for their propaganda in order to remain profitable.
Regarding Maduro and Venezuala, Glenn Greenwald is outraged that the US would recognize a "far right" pretender over his beloved Maduro. As right as Greenwald can be on some things, never forget that he is a nasty leftist who wants to enslave you and would happily murder you if it was necessary to advance his sick ideology.
he is a nasty leftist who wants to enslave you and would happily murder you if it was necessary to advance his sick ideology.
People have some weird murder hang ups around here.
Leftists have killed over a hundred million people in the last century. Greenwald is a leftist and is cheering on the leftist government in Venezuala which is currently starving and murdering its own people.
It is what it is. If that offeds your sensibilities and disturbs your deeply held belief that leftists are good people and mean well, well sometimes life is like that. It is not my job to lie so you feel better.
I do hate the fact that it looks so much like America is supporting (if not downright fomenting) another coup d'etat in Latin America.
This of course is the instant accusation every shitbag America-hating leftist on earth s making, despite the fact that almost none of us yet know all the facts of what is really going on there and it's a very complicated situation. But that is how it looks, and for most people that will be all that matters.
Pelosi is throwing a temper tantrum.
At this point, Trump should let her find her own way back to reasonability. Don't help her. Just give her a time out. Once she calms down, maybe she'll start realizing that the whole world doesn't revolve around her and other people need to be considered, too.
Trump just needs to keep offering reasonable compromises on the shut down. A three year extension to DACA is not an unreasonable trade for the wall funding. If the Democrats had come back and said 10 years, it would have put Trump in a bind. Ten years would be long enough to anger his supporters but still a reasonable compromise. Instead, they just told him to fuck off give us everything we want. And that just played into his hands. All of those freshman Democrats who won in suburban districts claiming to be "lets get things done" moderates have to be dying right now. It is just a matter of time before they tell Pelosi to go to hell and make a deal with Trump and the Republicans.
All of those freshman Democrats who won in suburban districts claiming to be "lets get things done" moderates have to be dying right now. It is just a matter of time before they tell Pelosi to go to hell and make a deal with Trump and the Republicans.
Whoops, what I meant to post is that these people weren't elected as Blue Dog moderates, they took office with the specific intent to oppose anything and everything Trump does. Pelosi's taking the hardline she is because she'd likely be replaced as Speaker for giving in so soon after the new Congress took their seats.
I think a lot of them were elected to do that but a significant number of them were not. A good number of them came from districts Trump won. It is not Trump supporters who are being harmed by the shutdown. Trump has no reason to back down. At some point the Democrats will have no choice. They can't let their supporters working in government go without paychecks forever and they sure as hell can't let food stamps run out, no matter how hard the media will try and blame the Republicans.
Now switch Pelosi and Trump and reread what you just wrote. It's amazing! It also applies.
Stop it, only Nancy is being unreasonable. You can tell because she's not agreeing with Donald.
How is Trump being unreasonable? I know logic and argument and justifying and explaining your positions is just not something you do. But, give it a try just this once. Explain how you think Trump is being unreasonable.
He's being unreasonable in exactly the same way as Nancy. They both have staked out a position which they will not budge from. It doesn't even matter who is wrong or right or if either is wrong or right. If what Nancy is doing is unreasonable, then so is what Donald is doing.
Now if you want to take Ken's apparent angle, that ONLY Nancy is being unreasonable, tell me why.
Trump has budged. He offered a three year extension on DACA. That is budging. It is giving Pelosi something she wants. Is it budging enough? Maybe not. But if it isn't, it is up to Pelosi to offer something that is and give something to Trump in return. She hasn't done that.
So your claim that neither one of them are budging just isn't true and as a result neither is any of your reasoning that follows.
So again, how is Trump being unreasonable?
So again, how is Trump being unreasonable?
neither is any of your reasoning that follows
If you're going to tell me you won't accept anything I say, why bother asking the question?
Trump did budge. That is a fact. He offered Pelosi something in return for the wall. All you are doing is pretending that didn't happen. So, no I am not going to just accept that.
Once again, explain how Trump is being unreasonable here.
Trump did budge.
So he'll either take no wall or less money for a smaller wall? Wait, he won't? Well then, he didn't budge on the issue.
He offered something that the Democrats have previously asked for, an act which I agree the Democrats have not done in return, but he didn't budge on the wall. And the wall is the issue regardless of what you or I think about it. It's all optics at this point.
So he'll either take no wall or less money for a smaller wall? Wait, he won't? Well then, he didn't budge on the issue.
He might. We don't know. The Democrats haven't offered him anything in return for doing so. Trump didn't budge on the wall but he offered the Democrats something in return for giving it to him. The Democrats in contrast have offered Trump nothing in return for giving up on the wall.
You are just playing silly semantic games here and frankly you are not very good at them. It is not up to Trump to offer to give up on the wall anymore than it is up to Pelosi to offer to give the wall and nothing else. Both sides are perfectly reasonable to ask for the thing that is most important to them so long as they offer the other side something in return. If Pelosi wants to kill the wall, she should offer Trump something he wants in return for doing it. In contrast, Trump wants the wall and has offered Pelosi something she wants in return for giving it to him. That makes Trump reasonable and Pelosi unreasonable.

Likewise
Where am i wrong here Sparky? You can't seem to explain that. Why don't you just concede the argument and move on.
But it is a non-issue. It is a completely and utterly fake symbolic issue, particularly on the anti-wall side.
A wall does not alter immigration policy in any way. There is no cogent anti-wall argument, other than "that's not effective" or "that's an inefficient use of money".
But that isn't the anti-argument they are using. They are decrying it as racism. It is a wall. It can be a wall while we have complete open borders. It can be a wall while we have completely closed borders. The only possible function for a wall is to reduce the number of people passing over the border where the wall exists. That's it.
The anti-wall crowd is utterly irrational.
The pro-wall crowd may be unhinged for other reasons, but taken at face value, the argument that a wall would be useful for reducing illegal border crossings where the wall exists is a perfectly sane argument.
Cyto,
The anti wall people claim that a wall would do no good but then turn around and claim it is some horrible monstrosity. Both of those things can't be true. If a wall is a waste of time and will do nothing to control immigration, then what is the harm in building it? Indeed, if your goal is to have open borders, isn't giving closed border advocates a measure that you know will be ineffective in return for something like extending DACA that you know is meaningful a very good deal? Moreover, isn't giving on the wall a smart move in that it would keep closed border advocates from getting things that might be more effective.
The wall would be effective. If it wasn't, the open borders people wouldn't be losing their minds over it. The thing about the wall is that however effective it is, it is not something that can be ignored and undone by the next President. Any sort of security or border measure is only as good as the President's willingness to enforce it. The wall, however, remains standing no matter who is President. And this is why they hate it so much.
If this analysis is true... then they are not motivated by "open borders", but by "increased illegal immigration", which is the most unsavory kind.
Being an illegal immigrant means you can be exploited for below-market wages. Being illegal means you are subject to all sorts of indignities.
The only people who want illegal immigration should be evil corporate farm owners and evil corporate food processors. Heck, even the evil construction industry that hires tons of illegals pays a market wage for their services. You have to pay double the minimum wage for cash-only manual day labor that doesn't speak any English in my area. Even house-cleaners are largely eastern European immigrants (also with very limited English skills).

I'm not sure where you're getting that Trump is being unreasonable. He's offering actual policy-based compromises; the most the Dems have come back with is "time for more debate on the subject".
"I'm not sure where you're getting that Trump is being unreasonable."
I am.
Yep, the best they've done so far is say "Just shut up and give us what we want now, and we promise we'll debate with you later on afterwards."
Amazing that someone wouldn't just immediately give in to that suggestion, isn't it?
The Never-Trumpers have yet to make a counter offer to Trump offering DACA people more time.
In negotiation, when one party makes a new counter offer, you can accept the new offer, offer a new counter offer, or reject the offer.
Lefties hate that Trump can out negotiate them because he knows their weaknesses. Their main weakness is that Lefties have more at stake with the federal employees being furloughed. Most of them are Democrats.
Trump offered to give Pelosi something she wanted in return for wall funding that he wants. What has Pelosi offered to give Trump in return for his giving her what she wants on the wall? Nothing as far as I can see.
Now, explain to me how Pelosi and Trump are being equally unreasonable here. And just so it is easier, I will stipulate that Trump is a bad man and his supporters horrible racists and save you the trouble of all of the virtue signaling and throat clearing you no doubt feel compelled to do. Just explain why Trump is the one being unreasonable or is as unreasonable as Pelosi.
It was at least an opening.
Pelosi shot Trump's proposal down before he even publicly offered it, and she's offered nothing of her own.
The Democrats in the Senate are offering something! They're voting on it today.
Pelosi has offered nothing--except a refusal to even consider anything Trump has offered.
That's a temper tantrum.
John says that 71% of Americans opposing Trump on a shutdown to blackmail wall funding is not enough failure yet. Or his favorability having collapsed by 7 percentage points so quickly. NEEDZ MOAR ENEMIES!
Trumpsters, in desperation, now tell each other fanciful delusions to keep their moral up, as Trump's failures mount ever faster.
INFORMED people know that Trump HAD a deal with wall funding ... that HE negotiated ... twice ... then HE broke ... twice . ... when attacked by his masters, Hannity/Coulter/Limbaugh/Ingraham.
After walking away from border security funding of ... $25 billion ... he's now groveling at Pelosi's feet ... for less than $6 billion.
The art of the SQUEAL!
Because she kicked Trump's ass AGAIN on the SOTU, even forcing him to retract his threat a day earlier, and publicly admit she was acting on her rightful prerogative? (snort)
Which Trump's gushing goobers lie about as always .. and 71% of Americans oppose him using a shutdown to force his will ... for a wall opposed by a majority anyhow ... opposing permanent status for Dreamers, which also says "fuck you" to most Americans.
Trump is now TRAPPED ... controlled by GURLS ... no matter what he does ... if not Coulter then Pelosi!
Which of the two will he submit to next?

Tough on "those who commit violence" sounds like it will be popular.
Yes and she will define "commit violence" as doing anything while owning a gun.
So, Savanna Guthrie got her followup interview with Nathan Phillips.
And spent the whole time sympathizing with his plight against the racist kids.
She asked him how she felt about the kid's interview. She asked him how he felt about the kid saying he didn't need to apologize for simply standing there. She asked him if he felt safe. She asked him if he heard people shouting "build the wall" and even mentioned that you can't hear anything like that on the tape.
He went on to say that he was protecting the poor black street preacher from the hate coming from the white kids?? and she never followed up, asking for any example of any such behavior.
She never asked him if he felt he bore any responsibility like she did to Sandmann ("do you understand your own fault in this?") She did ask him if he wished he had walked away, as Sandmann has said. Phillips said he tried to walk away but they wouldn't let him.
She never confronted him with 'why did you keep banging your drum in this kid's face". Never said "I don't see anywhere on this where you appear to be trying to walk away. I see you staring him down and beating a drum in his face." None of the things an objective reporter might ask.
She even spoke in a completely different tone of voice ? treating him with a mix of respect and contrition, as opposed to the condescending little girl voice she used with Sandmann.
Also in the interview she asks him about his military service. She offers him a complete out: "Some have said you were in Vietnam, a claim I don't believe you have ever made"
Well, except for his own people putting that out and it being in all of the original stories? why not at least ask how they got that idea? Nah? she helps him skate, and he still fumbles, mumbling about how he never said he stepped foot in Vietnam, but there was a lot of indian rights stuff going on and he was told to take off his uniform and never put it back on because people hate him for it?. Pretty bizarre response, actually. But she doesn't probe. At any rate, she clarified for him that he was only in the reserves. Apparently he went through boot camp and then something happened and he was only given a posting in the reserves for a couple of years.
I'm told, but have not verified, that his own facebook page contains videos in which he proclaims himself a Vietnam vet.
Watch for yourselves and see if you have a similar reaction.

And, he was discharged at the rank of private. Not PFC, but private. A few AWOLs probably had something to do with that.
Nobody is even mentioning if his discharge was an Honorable Discharge, General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions, Bad Conduct Discharge, or Dishonorable Discharge.
I don't think he got one of the last two types of discharges since I haven't heard anything about a court martial.
I saw the snippet where she asked the kid why he didn't walk away. Then I saw a small piece of this interview during which she treated the guy as some poor, put upon minority. It's obvious they're framing a particular narrative.
Then again, I'm not sure why anyone would be relying on the Today show for news.
I may be on an island here, but I think this is the only story. Not the kid. Not the weird street preachers. Not the native activist kook. But the media.
Their performance here has been beyond abysmal, and it exposes the level of agenda-driven reporting going on.
The set of 2 Today interviews with Phillips bracketing the interview with Sandmann are damning. Phillips repeatedly contradicts himself and changes his story, none of which is compatible with what you can see on any one of several videos, but he's given not just friendly treatment, but he's hand-walked through the process of getting out points they want to make.
Meanwhile the kid is repeatedly set up with questions like "do you understand your own fault here?" This, well after everyone knew that the entire story was a lie.
But nobody seems to be too interested in a coordinated effort across multiple news organizations to spin a false story about some random kid from smalltown USA. I suppose "because Trump" is behind that, but it still surprises me.
You are not on an Island Cyto. Even if what Phillips claimed had happened were true, the media would still be wrong for making this a national news story. There is no rational justification for making an argument between private citizens that didn't result in violence or any crimes being committed into a national news story I don't care how awful the language used by one side or the other. It is absurd. If the kids were jerks to Phillips and called him names, the solution is to inform their parents and the school that was sponsoring the trip and let them take care of it. Such an incident is in no way siginicant or indicitive of anything beyond the people involved. And no one, let alone minors, should have their lives ruined and see themselves into national piriahs over an argument even if they were in the wrong.
That to me is the part that all of the media is missing. As bad as it is that the whole thing was a lie, I think the fact that the media thought this was important enough to cover at all is in many ways even worse.
So if two people walk into the shrink .....
just two people....
Walk in and sing "the media is corrupt for even covering this" ... do it in harmony.... and then walk out.

Frankly, if teachers are 'forced' to pay out of their own pockets for 'art supplies' then the FBI agents can pony up some cash to pay for their immoral attempts to lock people in cages.
I thought the government was shut down, so who's working to make copies, pay snitches, replace tires etc?
Poor helpless FBI agent couldn't make it to a Very Important Meeting because the government wouldn't pay for his gas. Seriously?
The meeting is so damned important that his inability to attend threatens national security, but the FBI agent is such a damned cheapskate that he wouldn't spring for $50 in gas. Selfless public servant, my ass.
I've been out of pocket for much, much more money on many occasions in my career in the private sector. Of course, I valued my career and its contribution to society far more than a whining FBI agent. (And, in the long run, it paid off even though I didn't get reimbursed.)
"New York state prisons are indefinitely holding post-release prisoners because there's not enough room in supportive housing facilities."
But, Hizzoner DeBlasio is going to make sure that NYC provides health care to all, including illegal immigrants.
Government can't manage its most fundamental responsibilities worth a damn, but charges headlong into expanding the frontiers of the state.
I've been seeing in the news, some reports that show the number of Americans who BLAME TRUMP for the shutdown, and how much this number has increased since the last such report.
They're asking the wrong question for libertarians. How many of you CREDIT TRUMP for the shutdown?
Seriously, this is great news. Well, maybe a mixed bag, depending on which types of libertarian thought most resonate with you.
It may not be too late for REASON to salvage some of their libertarian credibility, if they were to say, run an article showing how much money has been saved during this shutdown, which services perhaps we don't really need (like overtime for cops running stings), which services are suffering (if any), and whether or not mandating an annual government shutdown would be beneficial.
Except it isn't a shutdown. They barely closed any services. They barely laid off any employees.
But they are failing to pay a bunch of people they are requiring to work. That last one really makes no sense.
The New Yorker article on "gender policing" seems like the author misses the entire point because it is all about her (who wants to look male). Women do not want men in their restrooms and showers out of modesty and fear of assault. That is their right. If men can go shower with women then why do we even need to wear clothes?
The author also completely misses the point of the transgender problem in the military. Soldiers in the field must shower together, sleep together. Whether trans or women with men in combat, this is very disruptive. Even more critically, trans people undergoing medical transition are not fit for combat. They are taking hormones and other meds, may be post-operative, etc. This reduces combat effectiveness.
