Biden in 2020? The Democrats Could Do Worse.
If Democrats are trying to win with voters who supported Obama in 2012 but Trump in 2016, Joe Biden might be their best bet.
Early polls showing Joseph Biden leading the large field of Democrats who are potential candidates for president in 2020 may leave some wondering what the Democrats could possibly be thinking.
Against President Trump, the Democrats would match up their own East Coast white male candidate in his 70s who doesn't drink alcohol and didn't serve in Vietnam? It would seem to violate Phyllis Schlafly's "choice not an echo" theory of how American presidents are chosen.
The polls, though, are picking up a truth perhaps not immediately obvious to casual observers, which is that a strong case can be made for Biden as the Democratic nominee in 2020. He's something unusual in presidential politics: a candidate who can excite the party's base while also winning back independents and voters in swing states and swing districts—the voters and places that supported Obama in 2012 but Trump in 2016.
The "excite the base" part has to do with Biden's eight-year tenure as the loyal, steady vice president to Barack Obama, a president who remains a highly popular and influential figure among Democrats. You name the Obama "achievement"—the stimulus, ObamaCare, the Iran nuclear deal—and Biden was right there in the center of the action. Biden also expressed public support in May 2012 for same-sex marriage, even before President Obama did.
The crossover appeal part has to do with the ability of Biden, as the son of a used-car salesman from Scranton, Pennsylvania, to connect with blue-collar Middle American voters, Reagan Democrats, and suburban Catholics. Back in July 2008, when Biden's name first surfaced as a potential running mate for Obama, a New York Sun editorial mentioned at least four votes by Biden to outlaw a procedure known as partial-birth abortion. Biden was one of 17 Senate Democrats who backed legislation signed into law by President George W. Bush outlawing partial-birth abortion.
Nor is abortion the only area in which Biden might be willing to deviate from the progressive party line. Though he has strong and longstanding ties to organized labor, as a senator he voted for the North American Free Trade Agreement. And while he opposed the Gulf War during the George H.W. Bush administration, his instincts on foreign policy tend more internationalist, even interventionist, than hard-left. He was a hawk on Bosnia. As a young reporter in Washington more than two decades ago I once watched Biden sit around a table in a Senate office building with a dozen advocates of democracy promotion, and it's impossible to forget what seemed like Biden's genuine enthusiasm for and dedication to the idea of spreading American-style freedom and rule of law worldwide.
Two other factors weigh in Biden's favor. He hires well. Chief of staff to the vice president is one of the most underrated but quietly influential jobs in Washington. William Kristol did that job for Dan Quayle, and Scooter Libby served Dick Cheney. Biden's chiefs of staff were Ron Klain, Bruce Reed, and Steve Ricchetti, three veterans of the Clinton administration. Reed, a Rhodes scholar, is known as a centrist, New Democrat type who helped Bill Clinton reform welfare. Klain, who clerked for Supreme Court Justice Byron White, is a classic Washington mentor-connector who heroically helped prevent the Ebola virus from spreading to the United States.
And Biden's got good interpersonal negotiating skills, in part as a result of his insight that you can get more done if you avoid questioning people's motives. Biden's working relationship with Jesse Helms, the Republican Senator from North Carolina who was a senior figure on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was the subject of a classic and memorable speech Biden gave in May 2015 at Yale University's Class Day.
Said Biden: "when you question a man's motive, when you say they're acting out of greed, they're in the pocket of an interest group, et cetera, it's awful hard to reach consensus. It's awful hard having to reach across the table and shake hands. No matter how bitterly you disagree, though, it is always possible if you question judgment and not motive."
Whether the Democrats are ready for that message in 2020, or in 2019, is a question that, if Biden enters the race, primary voters and caucus-goers will have a chance to decide. As for whether the country as a whole could benefit from it—well, this isn't an endorsement column. But it's not too soon at all to say we could do plenty worse.

It could be worse… We could have Liawatha or Hillary!

Not the best advert for your site, as you’re not exactly wowing us with your commentary here.
Maybe switch to insulting Tony, or get in a bold-face war with Hihn over what “shall not be infringed” means…
To be fair, she posts a lot and the URL is her signature. When she gets deeper into a topic, I enjoy her take.
It’s just blatant spam. It’s why Reason needs to graduate to 2019 (or 2010) and adopt up and down vote buttons.
Uyuuuugh fuck that. I prefer to languish in the fantasy that my comments are generally well-received.
Fuck that. The Reddit style of upvotes and downvotes are nothing but a race to mediocrity in the comment section. I still kind of think that sub-comments like these are too divisive. Classic linear forums are where it is at.
I just want an edit button. And for Reason to actively work on getting rid of Hihn.
I don’t know about base, but when sheep need to get to sleep they count Bidens.
(If sheep want to stay awake they think about Booker.)
I bet you liked the part about how he buys into the extremist science-denying nonsense about “partial birth abortion” don’t you? Well don’t get your hopes up. Once other 2020 candidates learn about this, they’ll use it to relentlessly hammer Biden. The Democratic base won’t tolerate someone who’s on the wrong side of history with respect to abortion access.
Definitely. If you read between the lines, every single Eddy post is actually about his love of Biden’s abortion voting record. This is known.
I just can’t figure out why anyone with anti-abortion / pro-Handmaid’s-Tale views would bother posting on a libertarian site. Like with immigration, there are not two legitimate sides to this issue. It shouldn’t be controversial. Human beings have rights; clumps of cells do not.
Isnt Europe by definition already the handmaid tale with their 20 week regulations?
I don’t think we’re supposed to bring up those right-wing extremist talking points.
/sarc
Every country on the planet are anti-abortion extremists with the exception of the US and Canada. Only we are feminist enough to abort in the third trimester. So tolerant.
And part them out for cash.
And laugh about it.
My sister won’t let me finish a sentence about some topics – I talk TV with her and I don’t even express an opinion before she- ah i can’t be bothered to finish this post. She’s highly indoctrinated and a lethal combination of arrogant and stupid.
A little while back I came across a post on a right wing site noting that Europe had that 20 week regulation on abortion. And the poster & commenters were all “Cool! if we can get that imposed here in the US, on the basis of ‘reasonable compromise’ and ‘Europe!’ that will then be a great launchpad for making abortion even more restricted and ultimately banned!”
I swear, the anti-abortion & anti-gun movements are running neck-and-neck in the “shifty and dishonest in zealous pursuit of their cause” race.
Stopping half the murders in hopes of eventually closing down baby abattoirs entirely, is hardly shifty or dishonest.
Fucking mendacious ghoul.
Yeah, ’cause Libertarians are never about personal responsibility to go along with those rights.
When talking partial-birth one is talking late-term. The idea that a 6-month fetus in a womb is less a human being than one of the same age in hospital incubator, that humanity is dependent on topology is absurdly stupid. The idea that neither qualifies is plainly monstrous. Only one possibility remains.
All human beings were clumps of cells at one point & with different DNA than their mother, hence they distinct individuals & have rights too!
“When life begins is a scientific, not a philosophic or theological, question: Life begins when the chromosomes of the sperm fuse with those of the ovum, forming a distinctive DNA complex that controls the new organism’s growth. This growth process continues unless a natural accident interrupts it or it is ended by the sort of deliberate violence Planned Parenthood sells.”
-George Will, Political Pundit & Atheist
Partial-birth abortion isn’t just scraping out a clump of cells.
I know people in their 75th trimester that can’t survive on their own.
The Biden Abides!
The Biden been abiding? What, pray tell, has Biden been abiding by, besides his own political glory? He’s a politician, right?
Q: How do you know when a politician is abiding by his or her own glory?
A: Their Krebs Cycles in their mitochondria are deriving energy from sugars!
Meh. Call us when he can photosynthesize.
By their glory hole attendence?
And if he is nominated, then you must obey the hive mind, and submit.
But Trump…
I like that this take doesn’t pretend that presidents get elected on policy.
Dems want blood in revenge for Trump. They won’t settle for a milquetoast like Biden. However the dem candidates will cannibalize each other in the primaries. It’s the nature of socialism. Thus Trump will win again. I will gladly vote for Trump again, except if Bloomberg runs. Sure he’s terrible on gun rights, but I think we can hold the line on that.
Nanny Bloomberg would be easy to take down. The attack ads will go something like, “He decreed no one should have more than 16 ounces of soda. Imagine what he would decree to take away your freedoms.”
Just run this over and over. He’d take himself down.
Raising taxes on poor people is a good thing.
Honestly this makes me want to vote for him even more. It’s like porn for millionaires.
Rahm.
C’mon, everyone knows Quark is a better candidate.
Yeah, but then we can expect an endless investigation by special counsel Odo.
Yes we all know this, but this sort of knowledge is how we got Gary Johnson.
The person who wins the primary will be the one who wins the blues support in the bluest states. That isn’t just progressive voters but donors, too. The grassroots people volunteering for campaigns will be volunteering for the most progressive social justice warriors they can find, and Joe Biden is old white man whose name isn’t Bernie Sanders.
The Democrats are in a center fleeing mode. The primary winner will be the one who directs the most hate at the white, blue colllar, middle class, and Joe Biden can’t do that credibly–certainly not and walk that back when it’s time to go after those rust belt swing votes come the general election.
The Democrats’ best bet is Elizabeth Warren, and given the operational, donor, and organizational network she’s built nationwide, she’s the one most likely to win the nomination, too. Oh, and women really like her. I hope she slips and falls in dogshit for her disgusting socialist nonsense, but just because I don’t want something to happen doesn’t make it any less likely.
It’s kinda funny that after Hillary ran the DNC like her personal fiefdom and lost to a blowhard, the Democrat reaction is to turn to candidates even more extreme than Bernie. Trump sure isn’t likable by a lot of people, but against Lizzie or Bernie or Occasional-Cortex or Kamela, he’s downright common sensical. It’s hard to imagine any Democrat contender who wouldn’t create more Trump voters.
And they’re all going to try to out shithead each other in the primaries in order to win donors. The one who seems most credible to the most Democratic primary voters is the one who will win the nomination. That’s why Obama horse-traded with Hillary to make her the Secretary of State in order to drop out. He needed to move to the middle and go after the blue collar vote, but he couldn’t do that so long as Hillary was attacking him from his left. The sooner the Democrats can move to the middle and stop competing for the votes of extremists, the better their chances of winning–but a moderate progressive these days might make a ’60s radical blush.
Trump may win in a landslide–and his record isn’t bad from a PR standpoint.
The environmentalists will throw their support behind the most radical Democrat. The gun grabbers will throw their support behind the progressive with the most radical proposals. You’re gonna run on affirmative action? You’re gonna run on illegal immigration!
And then how are you gonna walk that back, Kamala?
It’s true. And the Dems have no one who isn’t completely awful.
Prison construction!
Warren would get the nomination because of her vagina and the fact that she’s a one-note shit-talker just like Trump. Her message is tailor-made for the Democratic party circa 1992–if she was a man, no one would give a shit about what she had to say because her entire message is economic. She hasn’t come to grips with the fact that her party is the white-hating party now, is focused almost entirely on social vengeance, and is now controlled by the very billionaires she excoriates, especially in BigTech and guys like Steyer and Bloomberg.
Curious to see how much more overt the white hating gets. If the canceled march in Eureka is just an early sign, things will get interesting (and entertaining). Then Warren will really need that 1/1064th indian princess blood.
It’s far too easy to laugh off something like the Eureka march kerfuffle as the circular firing squad at work. I’m far more concerned about the fact that these people are the new face of the Democratic party and will be driving its politics for the next 30 years or so, because they’ll eventually get into positions of real, actual authority and will make it their life’s mission to ensure we’re all living the same Kafkaesque existence that they are.
“The person who wins the primary will be the one who wins the blues support in the bluest states.”
I disagree. Most of the field will be fighting over the progressives, which will divide that vote, and leave independents and the rest of the party (a larger slice than many people think) up for grabs. You can’t alienate progressives, but you don’t want to be too much of one either. Not saying many Dems are smart/brave enough to figure this out or even pull it off, but it’s politically the best path to victory in my opinion.
It’s astonishing to me how hard baby boomers are holding on to power. It’s such an odd thing when I realized Bush, Clinton, and Trump are the same age basically.
Can we find any newer blood?
The locusts haven’t finished feeding.
2020 will probably be that generation’s last hurrah. Most of the power players are getting pretty old, and we’re due for a political turn to Gen-X after that.
Not that the Boomer politicians won’t go out kicking and screaming as they finally come to the realization that acting like 20-year-olds for 50 years hasn’t staved off their inevitable demise.
“political turn to Gen-X”
Too conservative. They’ll run the Boomers till they’re all dead and then skip to David Hoggs generation.
Well, the young people are into that vampire thing.
Clinton Bush Trump born in the same year. Ponder that on the tree of woe.
Crazy uncle Joe or wampum faker, what a choice!
I didn’t vote for Trump, and I don’t plan to.
As the primaries roar on and the social justice warriors and socialists try to out shithead each other, I will be tempted.
I intend to resist the temptation to vote for Trump.
That being said, IF IF IF I had to choose between Trump and Warren, I sure as hell wouldn’t pick that piece of shit, Liz Warren.
Think of it this way: On what issues can the Democrats differentiate themselves?
Free trade is dead in the water. They can’t be more against free trade with China and NAFTA than Trump because he did everything the Democrats promised to do for 20 years but didn’t.
What, are they going to accuse him of being a fiscal conservative? Do any fiscal conservatives buy that line of argument? Are they going to accuse him of being a warmonger after all the warmongers have denounced him for pulling out of Syria?
They’ll differentiate themselves from Trump on two things: guns and social justice shit.
Guns and gays and guns and BLM and guns and immigration and guns and #MeToo and guns and the environment.
. . . although I might expect them to STFU about immigration and the environment come the general election because although that’s something that might stir up the donors in the primaries, the swing vote in middle American doesn’t want to hear that shit from the Democrats at all.
If Democrats are trying to win with voters who supported Obama in 2012 but Trump in 2016…
There were absolutely no voters who supported both Obama and Trump. The inbred slack-jawed yokels who support Trump are racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamaphobic, xenophobic Nazis every last one. Obama didn’t win because these blue-collar working-class Rust Belt retards voted for him, he won *despite* the fact that all of them voted against him. And when Trump came along, despite the fact that some of his own family are evil Jews, these people universally voted against Hillary because they fear smart powerful women just as much as they fear smart powerful colored people.
This is why the Dems nominated Hillary in the first place. As horrible a general candidate as she is she’s a perfect Democrat candidate, immoral, ruthless, crooked, cunning, willing to sell her soul for an ounce of power. And who gives a shit if the centrists, the moderates, the independents and the undecided voters don’t like her? Obama’s election proved that the Dems had the numbers to cram any candidate at all down the electorate’s throat. If they could put Obama in the Oval office despite the fact that 47% of the voters are racist bigoted racist evil racist scum racists, surely they could put Hillary in the Oval Office the same way.
And this is also the reason they had to come up with the idea that Putin stole the election – if it turns out some of the same people who voted for Obama’s Hope and Change campaign also voted for Trump’s re-branded Hope and Change campaign, they might have to admit to themselves that maybe the vast middle aren’t quite as deplorable as they’re painted. Maybe they aren’t irredeemably racist, which would suggest maybe they aren’t irredeemably sexist, either. Maybe they voted against Hillary for some other reason than the mere fact that she’s a woman. And maybe their squawking about illegal immigrants isn’t simply because they’re racist and xenophobic and all the rest, either. Maybe these are actual thinking people who respond to persuasive arguments rather than merely mindless sheep responding to knee-jerk evil stimuli.
Joe Biden is a great choice.
Back when Joe Biden was a senator, he coined the term ‘Drug Czar,’ after watching the movie ‘Reefer Madness.’
Senator Biden had the foresight to understand the dangers the marijuana plant posed to America’s youth.
Former Drug Czars rightly point out that the modern marijuana is much more dangerous than the 60s love child marijuana and how it’s a gateway drug to LSD, the most addictive drug ever.
Biden 2020 – if you care for the youth!
Yeah, man, you and your buddy Biden are CORRECT about the dangers of pot!!!
This “pot” stuff is evil- evil- evil- EVIL, and will one day be the death of us all!!! (If we don’t stop it NOW!) Now hear me out, please, for the sake of us all!
Because Elon Musk smoked pot on TV, the NASA safety bureaucrats didn’t approve of new space transport for humans. For lack of that new transport, Americans will no longer be able to go to the ISS and maintain it (USA contracts for Russian rocket rides are due to expire soon, and there’s a 3-year lead time on new orders). So in early 2020, the ISS will crash into my house, and kill me, and the gravity-wave transvorbulator that I am secretly working on in my garage in my spare time, will be lost to science. For lack of the the gravity-wave transvorbulator, humans will NOT be able to fend off the near-Earth asteroid that will cream us all in 2032.
It all started with Elon Musk smoking pot!!!
The “Reefer madness” movie was correct; pot is the death of us all!!!!
Elon Musk smoked pot on TV
No wonder he made a car without a gas tank.
How does Mr Creepy Back Rub win in the #metoo era?
Can you imagine the PAC ads with a long gag reel of candidate McCreepy rubbing up against women?
When a credible argument can be made that your team can do worse than Joe Biden, your team is in a world of shit. What’s left with him removed: an aging socialist, a liar, Willie Brown’s ex-mistress, Spartacus, who else?
Warren/Beto
Besides, wait till everyone starts linking to the dozens of Biden creeper touch vids on Youtube.
Klobuchar/Beto
Warren/Beto
A fake Indian and a fake Latino. That fits the democrat party all right.
LOL
Biden is so bad that doing worse than him would be like lowering yourself under a 1 foot high limbo stick. But I think the Democrats can manage.
The sad thing is that the democrat’s Rogues gallery is vast.
Given the circus that was the Kavanaugh nomination, I look forward to Biden getting within spitting distance of the nomination.
That promises to be some of the best drama in a decade. Even better than Trump!
Will we get a tearful pleading for forgiveness directed at the #MeToo movement a la Swaggart? Will we get feminist backtracking that feeling uncomfortable while sitting on Papa Joe’s lap is just something you stiffen up and accept (for the good of the country) like a character in 1984? Will getting a greasy hand down your underpants now be considered the ultimate symbol of women’s liberation?
So many possibilities with this. We may even end up with a courtesan branch of the government after everything is said and done.
Given that the democrats never turned on Bill a lot like for being a serial rapist, I doubt they will turn on Niden.
Never mind Biden. So when are the libertarians going to infiltrate the two main parties with ringers who then announce candidacy for president? It’s normally possible to select a small subset of libertarian positions so that the person voicing them looks either liberal, conservative, or whatever. (Okay – not authoritarian, that would be a stretch without the libertarian ringer lying.)
I would think the time and effort Reason and its readers spend discussing candidate choices of parties it has no power over would be better spent on a party they might have some sway over.
Can we find a Libertarian who has kept his or her libertarianism secret? It would be WAAAAY cool to have such a candidate spout the usual left or right bullshit, get elected, and only THEN announce that he or she was actually a Deep Libertarian lurker… And then take the USA where it needs to go!
Ringer = lurker, a mole? That’s what I assume you mean… Yes, that would be way-cool! Lurker would probably get lynched or otherwise assassinated, though, I suspect…
As best I can tell from post-analysis reported here on Reason of what happened to Libertarian party candidates in the 2016 and 2018 election results, many voters are tribal, even when they claim no party affiliation. It seems the average voter compares the policies and personalities of contenders in their (possibly subconsciously chosen) tribe, and will back their tribe’s winner even if the winner wasn’t their choice. So one possible solution would be to co-opt and/or pervert the policies of existing tribe(s) than expending effort to persuade others to join the Libertarian tribe.
As I (probably mistakenly) understand it – the first rule of party politics is that party power eventually falls to those who show up to do party work.
Yeah, the winnable elections for pro-liberty voters are in the primaries.
Mark Cuban is the best we can hope for I suppose.
The best democrat?
Given that Rand got like 3% of the Team Red primaries and Team Blue is going full commie these day, I’d say the chance of infiltration is zero.
The problem is that they can’t do any better.
You can tell how low our political culture has devolved when that borderline-retarded empty suit Biden is not only seriously considered for President, but has ever held a position more important than dog catcher.
Campaign Slogan: Let’s Go With Gropin’ Joe
His campaign bus has candy and puppies!
Along with windowless vans.
He’s just Biden his time.
PL,
A word?
R
Narrows gays?
Don’t expect the Dems to make the smart pick though.

The Internet will melt with Biden v. Trump.
Make it happen.
Joe Biden’s Congressional record
How about setting history: Biden as VP on the ticket, for a repeat political cuckolding.
I’m going to start calling Ira Stoll “Ira LOL” instead.
Biden? Seriously? Joe Biden is a horrible campaigner (he’s never made it past the initial Democrat primaries), a walking gaffe machine, and most of all, a man with numerous skeletons in his closet (plagiarism, groping hands) that Trump will gleefully exploit — if his Democrat rivals don’t do it first.
And appealing to the White Male Blue Collar voters who made the Democrat Party what it was is going to be verboten in the Modern Woke National Democrat Party in 2020, so Biden really has no viable strategy.
Biden, if he does decide to run, will be out of it by Super Tuesday.
Biden’s time to run really was in 2016–he had goodwill with the base for being a good soldier for Obama, pushing for gay marriage to be approved, knows how to talk to those working-class Rust Belt voters, and wasn’t that much older than Clinton, Trump, or Sanders. But he let the Hillo-beast convince him not to run, and lost his one good shot at the brass ring.
But the man has no remaining constituency in the party in the Current Year. Their base has made it quite clear that they consider those voters to be unfairly privileged, even as they scrape by paycheck to paycheck, and their voices are not considered to be needed anymore. Democrats now represent the third-worlders they keep trying to import.
There’s no home for blue-collar whites in the Libertarian party, either, because malbushim like Kevin Williamson and “true libertarian” commenters think of communities only in terms of their relative GDP, not their social capital. If these people don’t want to live 20 to a dwelling and work for shit-tier wages like immigrant and refugee communities, well, that’s too bad for them. Move to the city and learn to code, losers!
True, I’ve seen real hatred expressed towards blue collepar workers by hardcore libertarians here, who don’t give a shit if they lose their livelihood. As long as libertarian principles are strictly adhered to.
Which is, and always will be a losing strategy for any political party.
“…a walking gaffe machine, and most of all, a man with numerous skeletons in his closet (plagiarism, groping hands) that Trump will gleefully exploit — if his Democrat rivals don’t do it first.”
Trump will never have to deal with that. There are enough D idiots and schisms such that ol’ uncle Joe will have his gropings handed to him many times over before he ever has a chance to deal with whoever is the R candidate.
Yes the Democrats could do worse than Biden, that goes without saying. The real question if they want to win is can they do better, a lot better than Biden?

The issues I raise with Biden are this: (1) What is Burisma? (2) Who really controls this natural gas company with offices in Kiev and Cyprus? Very confusing paper trail on that. . .(3) Does the natural gas in Burisma’s pipelines which is flowing so profitably to Germany really originate in Eastern Ukraine, where the only gas fields Ukraine has are located? (4) Isn’t Eastern Ukraine controlled by Russian proxies? and, last but not least, (5) why is Hunter Biden, the failed Navy lawyer, on the board of directors of Burisma?

Joe Biden might be their best bet.
Please, Joe Biden, you’re our only hope.
Of course the elites are salivating at the thought of another establishment has-been+puppet.
To hell with that. And hopefully Pelosi will have a stroke or something.
We need mandatory retirement in all govt positions of 65 or less.

My husband returned home a few weeks ago. We are currently going to counseling, praying and reading devotionals together and assisting at church. He told me he is sorry for the way he hurt me and that he truly loves me.
