Blame Anybody but Trump
For the president, self-love means never having to say you're sorry.
For the last decade, I have been writing an end-of-the-year column recalling memorable examples of blame shifting during the previous 12 months. At first these compendiums featured various public figures, including Barack Obama. But then Donald Trump took up residence in the White House, providing such a rich trove of examples that no one else could compete.
Although Trump had never held public office before he was elected president, he outdoes professional politicians in his obstinate refusal to accept responsibility for any problem or failure. For Trump, as these highlights from 2018 show, self-love means never having to say you're sorry.
Election deflection. "If Republicans were to lose control of the House on November 6th," the Associated Press asked the president on October 16, "do you believe you bear some responsibility for that?" His response: "No, I think I'm helping people." When A.P. reported that Trump "won't accept blame" for losing the House, he denied that he had denied responsibility, calling it "FAKE NEWS." After the elections, Trump blamed Republican losses on candidates who had failed to show him sufficient "love."
DACA dodge. Trump said he favored citizenship for people who entered the country illegally as children, who had been protected under the Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. But he said he would support a legislative fix only if it included border wall funding, penalties for sanctuary cities, and a sharp cut in family-based legal immigration—conditions he knew Democrats would never accept. Then he claimed "Democrats are nowhere to be found on DACA."
Kidnapping credit. The Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy of prosecuting all illegal border crossers, including those accompanied by children, resulted in widely condemned family separations. The president blamed Democrats for "the horrible law that separates children from there [sic] parents."
Proscribed proclamation. Trump decreed that people who cross the border between ports of entry would not be allowed to apply for asylum, even though the Immigration and Naturalization Act allows applications by "any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States," "whether or not at a designated port of arrival." When a federal judge blocked the new policy because it contradicted the statute's "clear command," Trump blamed Obama—for appointing the judge.
Anger issues. In October, an ardent Trump supporter mailed pipe bombs to several of the president's critics and to the New York offices of CNN, which Trump habitually derides as an "enemy of the people" purveying "fake news." Three days after the bomber's arrest, the president blamed "The Fake News Media, the true Enemy of the People," for causing "great anger in our Country."
To Russia with love. Trump's fawning July 16 press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin was widely criticized, and not just by anti-Russia hawks. Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), for instance, said Trump "went out of his way to appear subordinate" and spoke "like the head of a vassal state," adding that "a person can be in favor of improving relations with Russia, in favor of meeting with Putin, and still think something is not right here." The president blamed—you guessed it—"the Fake News Media," which "wants so badly to see a major confrontation with Russia."
Farmers' friend. Trump started a trade war with China, which had a predictably pernicious impact on American farmers who sell crops to that country. Last week he bragged about providing compensatory aid to those farmers, saying he had to "defend" them "from unjustified trade retaliation by foreign nations."
My bulls, your bears. Trump is quick to take credit for rising stock prices but deflects responsibility for falling stock prices, even when they coincide with his market-unsettling tweets. Last month he claimed "the prospect of Presidential Harassment by the Dems is causing the Stock Market big headaches!"
This is my second totally Trump inventory of irresponsibility, and I expect there will be more. Don't blame me. Blame him.

All Hate Trump All the Time
For Reason, TDS means never having to write a real article
Pretty much. This article is terrible. The new Reason normal I suppose.
Totally agree. Reason has turned into a 90% leftist propoganda rag.
Sullum writes:

I'm not a big fan of Trump, but, he is right in this one!...Many times Trump has said certain events occurred that CNN has called ludicrous & it turns out Trump was right...One of the biggest being the wire tapping ot Trump' campaign by the FBI!
".One of the biggest being the wire tapping ot Trump' campaign by the FBI!"
They wiretapped the Russians. You say the Trump campaign was on the other end of the line?
NO COLLUSION!!!
They wiretapped Trump campaign staffers, not just when Russia was on the other end of the line - and used a dossier provided by the Hillary campaign as "evidence" to get the FISA warrant, without revealing the source of this evidence to the court.
Or write a real comment acknowledging that Trump has ever made a mistake.
Who is asserting trump never makes mistakes Mr. Strawman?
Or is your assertion that all real comments have to do with how Trump is wrong?
The circular human centipede that is the rightwing media. If you watch FOX News, you get the impression that Trump is the greatest president of all time, practically a demigod incapable of imperfection. And that's what Trump watches! Dispute something in this article instead of whining like a bitch, how about? You're supposed to be libertarians. You're not supposed to whine about how unfair politicians are treated by the media.
Tony, you're a one-man human centipede. Trump is no different than Obama, blaming everything that ever happens on the other team. It's all a bunch of bullshit. Almost makes me nostalgic for the good old days of GWB and BC.....nah. Maybe someday we'll have a real president that doesn't whine about his predecessor and how unfairly he's been treated....but the current system will probably need to collapse first....which seems likely, in my opinion. It's already completely broken.
Yeah well Republicans broke it, but considering you're at least not prostrating yourself before Trump in total devotion as seems to be a dominant political position around here, I'll take the point.
No one ever said Trump is perfect. He has flaws and makes mistakes, but was the best available choice. Tony, you just won't accept any opinion of Trump other than him being always wrong.
At least he isn't a war monger like The Hag.
Trump has already killed more civilians in the anti-ISIS endeavor than Obama ever did. Do I need to repeat that? I shouldn't have to considering he campaigned on doing just that.
At least Obama doesn't take his foreign policy directions from Russia and Turkey.
"Trump has already killed more civilians in the anti-ISIS endeavor than Obama ever did"
Is that what Media Matters told you to say? It's bullshit. But then, so are you.
"Yeah well Republicans broke it,"
IMO, it broke when the Democrats decided they were no longer in favor of the use of force in Iraq despite a good proportion of their constituents supporting the AUMF. It's like they withdrew consent after fucking Iraq, which is similar to how the #metoo movement is supported with the same flawed logic. Then blaming GWB for every bad thing just continued into Obama's presidency leading to the current era of hyper-partisanship. Trump is playing the same game. It's a game that will end catastrophically, I predict.
"Then blaming GWB for every bad thing just continued into Obama's presidency leading to the current era of hyper-partisanship."
The "current era" of hyper-partisanship precedes Obama's presidency by at least two Presidents.
(This constituent opposed the invasion of Iraq before we invaded Iraq, for a couple of reasons. First, we were already engaged in Afghanistan, and second, the Bush administration didn't seem to have an accurate idea of what to expect if we waded into Iraq. I correctly forecast that if GWB got us into Iraq, we'd still be there when he left office.)
How about Trump's supporters here?
If Trump does something good, then Trump gets all the credit.
If Trump does something wrong, then it's always someone else's fault.
Jeffy, you're a child. So of course you have a simplistic strawman observation like that.
"How about Trump's supporters here?"
Who gives a shit abput them.
Why are so many of your posts just bitching about people you don't like? What the fuck is wrong with you?
Jeffy is N eight year old trapped in a twelve year old's body. Tony is an adult trying to avoid being caught while inside a twelve year old's body.
"Who is asserting trump never makes mistakes"
Mr. Trump takes that position.
Trump made plenty of mistakes.
Should have fired the top levels of the DOJ and FBI on day one. And anyone involved in the investigation into Clinton email server and the IRS scandal.
Cut off the most corrupt heads of the Deep State hydra, then have a real investigation of the original events and those responsible for the fraudulent exonerations.
Should have turned ground for the border wall on day one too.
You poor sweet little child. Did the bad journalist hurt your feelings again?
Can't we be charitable during the holiday season? These gullible right-wing yahoos have very few space spaces remaining in the modern world, and they look to the Reason comments section for a haven.
Arthur L. Hicklib, right-wing yahoo.
Did Santa bring you a big, beautiful, bigoted wall, you half-educated rube? Did Mexico include a gift receipt for all of the disaffected wingnuts?
Or was it just another desolate day in the can't-keep-up backwaters of Trump country?
I dunno about y'all, but here's what Santa brought for me:
A Government Almighty that has shut down "non-essential" functions like the FDA approving new things for me, like new versions of cheap plastic flutes, and new ways in which I might be authorized to scratch my own butt-hole, after we study this new way to scratch my butt-hole, and spend $30 million on the studies, AND I get a prescription!? BUTT, in the meantime, ALL of the Government Almighty agents that are authorized to shoot me, are still up and running! And they are authorized to shoot me for unauthorized blowing on cheap plastic flutes, yes indeed?
Since Government Almighty is now shut down, and cannot warn ye, I will hereby perform my pubic duties...
To find precise details on what NOT to do, to avoid the flute police, please see http://www.churchofsqrls.com/DONT_DO_THIS/ ? This has been a pubic service, courtesy of the Church of SQRLS!
Also please note, it is now unclear whether or not "essential" Government Almighty programs will or will not include NASA bureaucrats FINALLY getting off of their safety-obscessed asses, and approving Boeing Starliner and SpaceX crew Dragon for manned flights to the ISS. We have no orders placed for more Russin rocket rides, and it takes the Russians 3 years to build more rides for us. So I predict that a combination of decaying Russian rocket "tech", our lack of foresight, NASA bureaucratic CRAP, and Government Almighty shutdowns will cause the ISS to fall out of orbit and crash into MY freakin' house!!!
Thanks, you Government Almighty twits and nitwits!!!
The ISS will be fully supported. Employees involved in ISS operations or near-term resupply missions are not on furlough. Calm down - take your meds.
That's not my worry... My worry is for the longer term. NASA safety bureaucrats don't understand that "the perfect is the enemy of the good". In less than a year, we will no longer be able to get American astronauts up there and back, if these bureaucrats don't get off of their asses. The Government Almighty shutdown will not help, either.
The Russians will inherit the whole ISS, and their space "tech" is decaying... As will (decay) the orbit of the ISS as well, eventually. And since Donald Trump hates MEEEE particularly badly, he will use his magic booger-brain-beams to make it fall on MY house!!! It is known!!!!
Because Elon Musk smoked pot on TV, the NASA safety bureaucrats didn't approve of new space transport for humans. For lack of that new transport, in early 2020, the ISS will crash into my house, and kill me, and the gravity-wave transvorbulator that I am secretly working on in my garage in my spare time, will be lost to science. For lack of the the gravity-wave transvorbulator, humans will NOT be able to fend off the near-Earth asteroid that will cream us all in 2032.
It all started with Elon Musk smoking pot!!!
"Reefer madness" movie was correct; pot is the death of us all!!!!
Santa brought me more unwarranted self-regard from 85 IQ hicklibs.
For Reason, TDS means that you never have to write an accurate or non-propaganda article.
And what does it mean for Trumpistas?
People who are okay with Trump have to hear and see propaganda lies daily?
They seem to prefer it that way.
This Trump supporter seems to be upset that someone is writing "propaganda."
Hey bitch, do the comments questioning the veracity of the article interrupt your anti Trump jerkoff session?
When Reason tries to say that they are Libertarian but they are actually propagandists for lefties, most of us Libertarians have a problem with it.
As you can see by the comments today.
How do you negotiate with someone that has no understanding of policy, does not care to learn the issues involved, or even listen to his advisors? Vertually every expert that has examined Trump's proposal to build a wall the entire length of the Southern border has concluded that it would be an engineering nighmare and largely ineffective at reducing the flow of illegal border crossings. The fact that Trump continues to push this white elephant, just proves that he has not studied the issue. It's all about preception. without any substative understanding of what's involve or whether or not it would be effective.
Yet Trump mysteriously gets a bunch of stuff done to rollback Socialism in the USA.
If finishing the border wall would be 100% ineffective, then why are Lefties 100% against it. Its not like they have a problem with wasting a few Billion dollars. Lefties waste Billions every second.
Trump is more effective in his decisions and policy plays and THAT is why the sads are coming from Lefties and their propaganda outlets.
"If finishing the border wall would be 100% ineffective, then why are Lefties 100% against it"
Can't speak for them, but the objection over here in the center is that it's a waste of money that could go to other things, including other things that would better address illegal immigration... such as raising the number of officials authoritized to hold deportation hearings.
Since when has the Left ever complained about make work union construction jobs?
It is precisely the fact that the wall would *do* something real that makes them oppose it.
Trump never proposed to wall every square inch dumbfuck.
Yes, yesterday I heard him refer to it as "the wall, or the fence, or whatever you want to call it." As long as the Democrats can portray what he wants as some sort of Berlin Wall with machine gun posts then border securitycan't be rationally discussed.
As long as the border restrictionist crowd continues to portray every penniless Guatemalan crossing the border as no different than a military invasion force, then we can't have a rational discussion about immigration.
That too. And which Senate folks on both sides of aisle are prepared to do so?
"As long as the border restrictionist crowd continues to portray every penniless Guatemalan crossing the border as no different than a military invasion force, "
Stop assertong that people say that and name them and post their quote instead.
You pull that shit constantly.
Just because they are penniless Guatemalans who don't pose any danger individually doesn't mean the country is not in danger of being overrun. Why did the (Western) Roman Empire collapse, again?
"Why did the (Western) Roman Empire collapse, again?"
Lead in the water supply.
They managed to survive putting an unmitigated egotist in charge of the place, so there's hope.
Little Jeffy ignores the proven fact these caravans are bankrolled by leftist groups, and are a carefully organized thing. They have also been proven to be infiltrated by cartel thugs using them them as an opportunity to advance various smuggling ventures, human trafficking, etc..
An Alex Jones puppet "speaks"
And called out as a FRAUD
PUT UP OR SHUT UP.
SHOW us PROOF ... not more babbling.
PUT UP OR SHUT UP.
SHOW us PROOF ... not more babbling.
Nobody should hold their breath, waiting for a Gomer to put up.
Hihn Sock Puppet Alert!
This is what passes for journalism?? And an argument??
Its just laughable, not even worth addressing.
It's a typical end-of-year wrapup. You never seen them before? Or are they ok unless they bash Trump, like when they bashed Obama?
Carry that water, bitch
Answer the question or shut the fuck up bitch
To be fair, I did ask two questions, and probably confused it. The regular spambots are pretty inept, and I don't expect better from the TDS bots.
Carry that water bitch.
@Mithrander You fucking answer the question.
Why the fuck should Nardz answer a question a-ahf posed to cecil1? I swear you guys are so eager to cover Jacob's demagogic ass every time he posts a JournoList piece, that you just strike out at anyone.
READ WHAT HE SAID, YOU CRAZY. DUMBFUCK Fancylad
NOT WHAT WAS SAID, THUG.
I'll TRY to dumb it down to your level
Nardz said, followed by Mithrander
What he SAID is answer the question or IGNORE it -- don't be a fucking thug. That he added "bitch" shows -- IF YOU HAVE A BRAIN ... he was doing to Nardz, what Nardz had done.
What Nardz did is what YOU just did!! .... an INFANTILE personal assault, that was even STOOPID (to what he said)
IF YOU CAN'T RESPOND TO A COMMENT ... SHUT THE FUCK UP ... AND MOVE ALONG ... INSTEAD OF WHINING LIKE A SNOWFLAKE (which is at least 75% of your "pussy comments.")
Any questions?
"CAPITALS MEAN I'M SUPER SERIOUS!"
I love having a rent-free penthouse in Hihn's head
They bashed Obama? lol, where? Besides Fox News.
(smirk) How the FUCK would you know?
Obama was trashed regularly by the liberal AND mainstream media ... for not being liberal enough.
In YOUR fucked up language, he was a DINO. Democrat In Name Only.
Just like your right-wingtards screech RINO.
But YOUR nose is wedged up the asses at Fox, Breitbart, Infowars, WND and Stormfront
Left - Right = Zero
(shaking head in disgust at the blowhard)
Ellis Wyatt - Sock = Hihn
Water - Wet = Duh.
Reason is largely a propaganda outlet.
Libertarian articles and Libertarian points of view not so much.
The commenters are the last steady Libertarian part of Reason.
I realize that engaging with you is as fruitful as trying to discuss particle physics with an earthworm... but libertarianism isn't about blind worship of a politician. Especially when he's terrible. I would think you'd learn that on day 1.
The guy prefers to be told what to think, and work from there.
Whereasyou skip the thinking step entirely and just mouth the talking points?
You have me confused with that voice in your head.
Poor Tony hates Libertarians.
This is a lame article.
Yes, it's true Trump never accepts any personal blame, but that's something he shares with every other politician I'm aware of. Sure, his communication style is a lot more direct and course than other national-level figures. But his unwillingness to accept any responsibility is entirely typical.
Name one politician above the local level who ever came out publically wirh a mea culpa. I can't think of anyone, ever.
Randall "Duke" Cunningham?
Even MaCain made some sort of half-assed apology for the Keating savings and loan scandal. Even Obama said Libya was a mistake. I don't think Trump has ever admitted any failings at all, unless bankruptcy counts.
Even *I* have admitted mistakes!
President Trump on Monday conceded he made mistakes in assembling his Cabinet, which has already seen three departures.
Trump actually admitted a mistake ? mostly
Some of you actually believe the propaganda coming from reason?
Any US politician that I can think of picks and chooses public blame for mistakes depending on how they can spin it for political gain.
The assumption from Lefties and their propagandists like Sullum is that Trump makes nothing but mistakes and he should be apologizing every second of every day.
I want Trump to do what he is doing instead. Rolling back government where he can, send Lefties into crying fits, and standing up for American interests- like most President don't.
"The assumption from Lefties and their propagandists like Sullum is that Trump makes nothing but mistakes and he should be apologizing every second of every day."
The assumption from this centrist is that Trump makes lots of mistakes, and admits approximately 0.00% of them, no matter how obvious they are.
Show me a person who has never made any mistakes, and I'll show you a person who has never done anything.
"The assumption from this centrist"
Wait, do you have a centrist there with you telling you what he thinks because as a leftist you're too stupid and gullible to have thoughts of your own?
Otherwise your post makes no sense.
"Otherwise your post makes no sense."
If I cared what you thought, I'd have used a 3rd-grade vocabulary so you could follow along.
That was quite something. A real psychological trip. He hires the best people, but in order to escape blame he has no choice but to blame the people around him, all of whom he hired.
Obama dodnt apologize for libya. He said he failed for not planning for the day after. He never said he was wrong completely. He hedged.
As for your other assertion... even fact check says he apologized for things such as the access hollywood tape.
This is a lame article.
Yes, it's true Trump never accepts any personal blame, but that's something he shares with every other politician I'm aware of.
So were the last ten years of Sullum's end-of-the-year articles equally as lame, or just this particularly blasphemous one that criticized your Lord and Savior?
"So were the last ten years of Sullum's end-of-the-year articles equally as lame, or just this particularly blasphemous one that criticized your Lord and Savior?"
The only fools who claim 'lord and savior' are those in the serious grip of TDS.
There is help Jerry, and you need it:
"By Rod Thomson
Well Part 1 of our treatment options for Trump Derangement Syndrome was popular enough that we are jumping right in with Part 2. Plus, the symptoms keep multiplying. Treatments will need to keep up. This could be an ongoing process."
https://therevolutionaryact.com/treating
-trump-derangement-syndrome-part-2/
"The only fools who claim 'lord and savior' are those in the serious grip of TDS."
What's funny about this is how the roles were flipped 8 years ago.
These are Obama's words--from before he'd done anything--
"Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth"
The moment in question? The moment Democrats had chosen him to be their candidate.
Should I find clips of the many hymns to Obama that schoolchildren were made to sing?
There was a very real reason why people took umbrage at the sheer hubris of Obama--and potshots at his worshippers--the same folks who insist that Trump's getting the same treatment.
Your mistake here is assuming that I am as partisan as you are. I'm not.
Your stated positions in your posts say you're lying to pass as a centrist.
No James, you are much more partisan. You just don't admit it.
Being against parties is partisan?
Orwell was right!
Ah, that's my mistake, then?
And it's just sheer coincidence that you sound like a leftist parrot, screeching the positions of your masters as we look on and laugh?
Oops. You used the words "sheer coincidence" where you should have used "imagination". Other than that, you are correct.
Obama was the original 'I didn't do it President'. He also played the 'clueless' President well having learned about things when he read about them in the papers.
How could he do it when henlearned about it from television?
"Name one politician above the local level who ever came out publically wirh a mea culpa. I can't think of anyone, ever."
Reagan, on the topic of the Iran-Contra mess.
And what president eagerly accepted responsibility for the politics attached to his administration? Sure, Trump is a piece of work, but let's not conflate being unsubtle about it with being unique in it.
"And what president eagerly accepted responsibility for the politics attached to his administration?"
I don't know. Was any President ever famous for having a "The buck stops here" sign on his desk?
Johnson "resigned" over Vietnam (by announcing he wouldn't seek re-election). Nixon resigned, period, although I wouldn't say either one can honestly be described as "eagerly".
Reagan confessed that "Mistakes were made". Again, not eagerly, but he did willingly admit, well, making mistakes.
Turkey has commenced building a solid concrete tip-up wall along its 900 km border with Syria. The EU is paying for it! Construction is proceeding rapidly. They pour the panels horizontally, then tip them up to make a wall about 8 meters high. The thing about ladders is that they are not invisible, they trigger lots of sensors, and they give fast patrols on the road adjacent to the side of the wall time to race to the intrusion before anyone can be up, over, and away in the bush (which is not a problem anyhow in desolate grazing and farm land.)
Trump sounds off because the legacy media is close to 100% on all the flaws of Democrat candidates or liberal thinking in general. We conservatives now have a name for it---the propaganda of silence, and it is sadly effective at distracting the shallow and gullible public from little questions like all the reasons Hillary should have been locked up, had she only been investigated with Muelleresque zeal and hard nose prosecutorial tactics and tricks for the mountains of appearances of impropriety her dealings always generate. America has many thousands of highly technical laws. Only continuous cover-up and stonewalling even by those charged to "investigate" her has kept her out of prison. The non-stop support of the intensely biased mainstream media gives her a lifetime get out of jail free card and always will until the lefty mainstream (legacy) media itself is demolished.
Fox news makes brains into jello.
Are you sure? You may have cause and effect reversed.
Watch a lot of Fox news do you?
I do! It's a couple notches from being that lady on North Korean TV, except that they get to dictate what the president thinks!
"Watch a lot of Fox news do you?"
Nope. No brains of jello.
And you?
Nope. No brains of jello.
But I bet you find that MSNBC, HuffPo, CNN and the NYT are paragons of virtue and truth.
Infantile goober
"But I bet you find that MSNBC, HuffPo, CNN and the NYT are paragons of virtue and truth."
You lose.
I wish Turkey luck on their wall. Maybe then they can pull back all the tanks they're massing on the Syrian border and not slaughter the Kurds when we leave.
The thing about ladders is that it's hard to take a vehicle up a ladder.
"Only continuous cover-up and stonewalling even by those charged to "investigate" her has kept her out of prison."
The investigations on Trump are the Swamp preemptively shutting down investigations into itself. They're trying to run out the clock until they get another Deep State friendly administration in power.
If the Deep State is not held to account for their ocean of crime, self government is done in America.
No no no, Mr. Sullum. You don't understand. The rule is:
The Standards Are Lower For Trump
See, every other politician is judged by ideology, principles, legislative record, accomplishments, etc., etc.
But not Trump. He is judged only by whether he drools in public or not. If he doesn't then it's a WIN, no matter what else he may do.
In most times, if a party that claimed to be the "fiscally responsible" party only managed one tax reform bill and a bunch of bloated spending bills as their only legislative accomplishments, when that party had unified control of the government, we would say that it is a rather weak record. But Not With Trump! With Trump, that constitutes a win beyond all proportions and if you disagree you just have TDS! Trump Wins Again!
In most times, a negotiator who gave away his final negotiating position at the outset would be criticized as a weak negotiator. But Not With Trump! With Trump, it is 99th-Dimensional Underwater Chess, and/or it's all the other team's fault anyway no matter what. Trump Wins Again!
"The Standards Are Lower For Trump"
"If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor!"
Yep, others are held to higher standards.
"If You Like Your Doctor, You Can Keep Your Doctor"
"Iraq Has WMD"
"I Did Not Have Sexual Relations With That Woman"
"Mexico Will Pay For The Wall"
One of these four is not like the other!
The first three, they were lies for which the politicians were held to account.
But the last one, the lie is just excused as "Trump being trump"! "Oh he wasn't serious anyway!" "Don't take him literally!" "It's 99th Dimensional Chess!" "Look over there, Pelosi or Ocasio-Cortez said something stupid!"
"The first three, they were lies for which the politicians were held to account."
Obo was held to account exactly how?
Bush was 'held to account'?
Bubba was not called to account for lying to the public, but to congress.
We know you're an idiot, please continue to show you're a liar.
"Bubba was not called to account for lying to the public, but to congress."
Bubba beat the rap for lying to Congress. It was lying in a civil trial that got his law license surrendered.
Mexicans are paying for the wall.
I have been assured that Mexican illegals into the USA pay more in taxes than they get out in benefits.
"I have been assured that Mexican illegals into the USA pay more in taxes than they get out in benefits."
Sales taxes go to state and local governments, and not the federal government.
Poor troll doesnt know how Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes work.
Of Course, D.C. taxes are paid to Puerto Rico and no the US Treasury.
You are just a moron troll Pollock.
Hmmm.
A comment that doesn't mention Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes shows I don't know how they work.
"You are just a moron troll Pollock."
So you're dumber than a moron troll?
What other presidential campaign had a running fact check on number of lies (most of which are merely opinions) like wapo does for trump?
Youre a fucking idiot jeff.
Reagan had a couple of books on the subject of ongoing mistakes and lies, which were not unlike the fact-checking you get today (of politicians of both parties)
How did Obama account for his lie?
Even Obama's own supporters were eventually forced to admit that yes it was a lie.
I do believe it was the "Lie Of The Year" after all.
Ditto with Bush's supporters and Iraq WMD.
Ditto with Clinton's supporters and Monica.
But no matter what Trump does, his supporters will always claim it's not Trump's fault. It's always someone else's fault. Just like Trump himself.
But what has he done specifically that's on those levels?
It's a lot of noise sure but what exactly? The draw down in Syria? Criminal reform bill? What?
You didn't answer his question Chemleft.
"We're building a wall, and Mexico will pay for it"
"NO COLLUSION!!!"
"Hey, look over there! Nothing to see HERE..."
"The first three, they were lies for which the politicians were held to account."
AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAAH
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU SMOKING!!!
"If You Like Your Doctor, You Can Keep Your Doctor"
"Iraq Has WMD"
I actually believe these two were less "lies" than just "wrong" (Clinton was absolutely lying when he claimed he didn't have sex with one of the interns. He knew it wasn't true when he said it.
For Obama, when he said it he knew that it's always up to a doctor to decide who they see as patients, and not government bureaucrats. So he should have said "If you like your doctor, and want to keep your doctor, we won't make you change". That doesn't roll off the tongue so well, so he went with the broader statement that turned out to not be true.
For W, I think they really, really believed they were going to find some WMD lying around someplace. How much I believe they had it ready to deploy varies a bit day-to-day, but I think they expected to find some down in the back of the basement somewhere, for sure.
I can go with both explanations. But still, Obama did say it and if he was such the great orator he would have figured out a way to convey it better.
In the Bush case, I remember very well there were plenty of people who truly believed there were WMD - and to be perfectly frank, there was *some* rationale for it given Hussein's behaviour up tp that point.
"there was *some* rationale for it given Hussein's behaviour up tp that point."
Pretty thin.
He showed us that he didn't have any, but he told his other political enemies that he did. The guy was desperately trying to hold onto power in a country that was just one destabilizing event from kicking him out and descending into chaos. So he needed Iran to back off, but he also needed us to back off, too. He let us inspect whatever we wanted (necessary to keep us from blowing the shit out of his whole country) but told Iran he still had them (necessary to keep them from blowing the shit out of his whole country.)
Then the neocons chickenhawks took over the US, and showing us that he didn't have any WMD wasn't good enough to keep us from blowing the shit out of his country any more.
The threshold for what the media considers good journalism, is lower. That's for sure.
If you think trump is judged less harshly than lrevious presidents youre a bigger fucking idiot than i imagined.
By people like you, yes he is judged less harshly.
And people like you use any excuse they can find to shit their pants about him.
"If you think trump is judged less harshly than lrevious presidents"
During the campaign, he was. It was assumed that he didn't know squat about a whole bunch of topics, so if he got within barking range of the right answer, he was applauded.
As the actual Chief Executive of the United States, being within barking range of the right answer is no longer good enough.
Plus, of course, as a candidate, he avoided appearing in front of audiences likely to contain critics who'd call BS on him, and when he did run into one of those critics, he'd have them thrown out.
So, the poor guy got used to something as a candidate that didn't continue once he'd got the job. He's not known for handling disappointment well.
You know, James, I read the things that you and Jeff and Shriek and Tony write and it comes to me that you all live in your own little invented reality.
How anyone can say that Trump got a pass during the primaries without choking to death on their own laughter is just impossible to understand.
The depth of delusion required for a person to write something like that--and be serious is simply mind boggling.
But there you all are, with that and worse. And no amount of evidence, no fact, can deter any of you. It's as if you are walking around with your eyes closed, your ears plugged, screeching 'lalalalala' save for when you can whisper together in preparation for vomiting out the New Truth.
"How anyone can say that Trump got a pass during the primaries without choking to death on their own laughter is just impossible to understand"
I was paying attention. Perhaps that's why you fail to understand?
Nobody took him seriously. Not the R's he was running against in the primaries, nor the D's when he became the nominee. But they did keep coming back to him, over and over, even when they skipped over the other R's in the R candidate pool.
He didn't get any respect... due to not deserving any... but he got lots of coverage, and was held to lower standards because we KNEW he didn't know squat about a whole host of topics.
Here's the deal. The guy's a bullshitter. If you're buying bullshit, that's just what you want. But if you're not buying bullshit, it's just bullshit. Big piles of it.
"I was paying attention"
And yet somehow came to exactly the wrong conclusion.
Naw, you weren't paying attention and you're lying about it now.
Or, alternatively, you're a troll who should be ignored.
Pollock the troll has visited us more frequently now that multiple trolls have been banned.
Trolls are being banned, and yet YOU'RE still here? TANJ.
The standards for Presidents are the economy, war, foreign policy.
Trump doing very well on all of them.
The standards for Trump are the fevered dreams of Deep State Globalists as they publicly read Trump's mind for what they imagine he thinks and feels.
Ron Paul's prediction from almost two years ago is now coming true before our very eyes. Nailed it dead on the money.
Of the many bad things about this awful debt our idiot leaders have piled up, one of the worst is that it has now given the scumbags in the Federal Reserve total control over the economy. They can now inflate and pop the bubble at their total whim depending on what they prefer. God bless you Ron Paul for being one of the only people to tell the truth!
Ron Paul is as wacko as Weigel's whatever.
Friedman DEMOLISHED the dumbass gold standard with a simple question, "Do we want a stable money supply or stable prices?"
OBVIOUSLY prices. duh. And we can't have both, unless somebody repeals the Law of Supply and Demand.
Friedman noted that BOTH the Fed and the gold standard FAILED. So he had a better alternative. The ONLY one rooted in the Law of supply and Demand (also called reality)
Ron Paul's WHINING about the Fed suffered from the same idiocy as "Repeal the Income Tax; replace it with nothing; run the federal gummint on ... FICA taxes. " Also targeted at the Lowest Information Voters (and those who flunked 7th grade math!)
Fuck off Hihn.
And by the way, Ron Paul is better than you. Being a thorn in his side is as close to relevance as you will ever get, despite being utterly pathetic. It is literally the moat important thing you have ever done, hating someone more successful and accomplished than you because his libertarianism is bettwr than yours.
Hey, Pussy,
BE A MAN FOR ONCE
WHY do you swallow the crazy bullshit that we can repeal the income tax, replace it with nothing and run the entire federal government ion FICA taxes???
How did you manage to get SUCKERED into believing we can repeal the income tax and run the entire federal government on FICA taxes .... when half of Medicare is subsidized by the ... income tax?
Why did you support Ron Paul sponsoring a bill that would have forbidden SCOTUS from hearing ANY appeals to DOMA. Homosexuals would have been the first group denied the defense of their constitutional rights since emancipation.?
Why do YOU support Ron Paul, that homosexuals should have no more constitutional rights than niggers had, under slavery? (/sarc)
Why do you support Ron Paul's fascism -- that states have powers NEVER delegated? That we have NO defense of rights being denied and disparaged by state gummints,
Why are you CLUELESS on the massive differences between States Rights and Federalism?
Are you an accurate example for the intelligence within Ron Paul's cult?
Fuck off Hihn.
Here again -- the PROOF they are so desperate to suppress. (smirk)
Re:Ron Paul
"Do we want a stable money supply or stable prices?"
Libertarians wouldn't have the government make that call, but thanks for playing.
Sorry, Jacob, I am blaming you.
I essentially started three weeks past and that i makes $385 benefit $135 to $a hundred and fifty consistently simply by working at the internet from domestic. I made ina long term! "a great deal obliged to you for giving American explicit this remarkable opportunity to earn more money from domestic. This in addition coins has adjusted my lifestyles in such quite a few manners by which, supply you!". go to this website online domestic media tech tab for extra element thank you .
http://www.geosalary.com
May I ask why any of you eager Trump cum dumpsters don't go to foxnews.com or breitbart or somewhere you might fit in and even be considered respected intellects by your peers?
I don't particularly like witnessing the germination of a fascist mentality among what's supposed to be the Freedom People. The media is all evil because they criticize the dear leader. Do you even realize you're doing this? You actually believe that all the media save FOX and Fat Limbaugh's belching hour are telling lies nearly constantly? Really? And only you guys have noticed?
You think Trump is good at his job? Do you watch him do it, or do you just watch Steve Doocey jack off while he talks about it?
One thing is not entirely on you. The conservative movement, for as long as anyone can remember, has been the whiniest bunch of morons in the universe. Nothing is ever your fault. There's always a conspiracy. Anyone who criticizes you is by definition part of the conspiracy. You're like babies with binkies, and you've always been that way. You can't blame a man for his psychological needs, I guess.
As totally useless as the progressives!
What about you and single-payer? Government health care means betting your life, literally, that politicians - facing tight budgets -- will INCREASE your taxes, and never CUT your benefits. How crazy is THAT.
Canada's Medicare was ruled an unconstitutional threat to human life, citing all the Canadians dying on waiting lists of a year or more.
England found major atrocities in 14 hospitals (government owned there). hundreds of British patients were rolled into empty rooms, abandoned and died - many found in their own excrement. Cost-cutting
England's death rates are a staggering 45% higher IN HOSPITALS, vs ours. KAPOW! National Health Service.
And it gets worse ....
(cont'd)
YOUR PROGRESSIVES BLAME INSURERS FOR OUR HIGH COSTS!!!
We spend MORE per capita on GOVERNMENT healthcare, for less than 40% of our population than TOTAL healthcare cost in Sweden, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. (page 3 at source)
Left and right piss and moan, blaming each other. But you're both FAILURES, WHINERS and PUSSIES, manipulated by political elites.
Left - Right = Zero
I think taken altogether the metrics tend to support a universal scheme (by necessity managed and subsidized by government one way or another). But I am all ears if someone has a better idea.
You don't know "metrics" ... or health care. ... the ABSOLUTE best (recent) health care was ... in the original, bipartisan BAMACARE .. as an alternative to a "public option" ....endorsed as a private alternative by DAILY KOS .... but you never heard of it!
The model was Seattle's Group Health Co-op (GHC). I was there for 17 years.
It's an HMO and a Co-op.
1) Doctors are salaried employees of their patients
2) Run their own hospitals
3) Own their own pharmacy (in each clinic)
4) NO CLAIMS PROCESSING.
5) HMO efficiency, but MEMBERS set priorities.
6) Much of their treatment by phone (IMPOSSIBLE in Medicare).
7) They have a direct competitor ... NO MONOPOLY.
8) They have over 800,000 members in WA,
This type of private, non-profit, member-controlled health acre was the norm in America ... until today's fucked up system was created by .... your favorite asshole, FDR!
When FDR cut his deal with unions, for employer-based health care ... there was NO employer-based care. It was ENTIRELY membership groups, mostly ethnic and fraternal lodges, who had done it since the 15th century
Insurance companies had NO health insurance. But the existing non-profits had NO employer groups, so the insurers created them.
Here is the left's biggest fuckup ? the flip side of right's fuckup ... both are tools of the power elites
Cont'd
Part 2/2
BULLSHIT. Your focus is on government, not health care.
Just as the right sucks ass for the insurance industry,
Before FDR. then LBJ, we had universal TREATMENT, regardless age or income, but spent (pre-LBJ) only 7.8% of GDP.
UNIVERSAL
The uninsured were treated in privately funded charity hospitals. THAT was the best health care on earth, for both insured and uninsured, Seattle's GHC is the modern equivalent. Formed after WWII by unions, physicians and employers to provide an employer-based version, controlled by MEMBERS , of what FDR had destroyed.
Left - Right = Zero
Big Gummint vs Big Pharma
Both manipulated puppets of the power elite.
Fuck off Hihn.
"Left - Right = Zero"
Why do you constantly out yourself? Are you seriously tryong to make it seem like ANYONE would regurgitate tjat stupid catchphrase of ypurs that doesn't even make sense?
Now fuck off.
Everyone please beware... Tulpa is off of his rocker!!!
He had a personal psych-therapist named Phillip Zimbardo. Zimbardo basically told Tulpa that Tulpa needs to get back on his meds. So now Tulpa's Sacred Baby Feelings have been badly hurt, and he takes it out on Zimbardo and everyone and anyone, especially when he can do it anonymously.
Just so that y'all can be aware...
It's been a libertarian slogan for 50 years.
May we assume you flunked Algebra? It means that right and left have EQUAL VALUE.
After he had shown WHY both left and right are STUPID on health care -- each a tool of the ruling elite.
They have different positions ... but the same VALUE.
If you get THAT pissed, being equated with progressives ... abandon your morally bankrupt conservative values and and explore LIBERTARIAN values.
We've been around for 50 years.,. Get up to date.
The related libertarian slogan is, "Right and Left are obsolete." As you indeed are,
Hihn...Hihn...everywhere Hihn.
"What about you and single-payer? Government health care means betting your life, literally, that politicians - facing tight budgets -- will INCREASE your taxes, and never CUT your benefits. How crazy is THAT."
Sure. And enlisting in the military means gambling that that your political leaders won't get you involved in someone else's war, and then if they do, they'll send you armored vehicles that can withstand improvised explosives rather than unarmored ones.
Hell, just interacting with police means gambling that they won't decide you're threatening them and shoot you dead without waiting for an explanation. Heck, staying at home, minding your own business, is a gamble that the cops won't try to serve a no-knock warrant on somebody else, show up at your home by mistake, then bust in and shoot anyone who asks them wtf they're doing.
You want single-payer to work? Put Congress into the general population instead of having their own system. (This will also substantially impove the VA, since a big part of the frustration of dealing with the VA is getting them to agree to treat you in the first place. Sure, they'll admit that you were a veteran, and you were exposed to toxins as a result of your service... but are you SUUUUUURE that your present illness came from that exposure? No? Call a civilian doctor.)
Not possible.
Wrong on both. Focus on secondaries; ignore the primaries.
Libertarians have long known that both left and right have no more than slogans and soundbites, each manipulated by a different elite. as summarized here
Fuck off Hihn.
I was here long before you, jackass, and socialists were *never* welcome here. Shouldn't you run along to Salon?
If Reason wants to kick off the actual libertarians here, let them put their big boy pants on and do it.
The Orange Cult is enraged. Again. Denying known facts. Again.
George Orwell predicted, in 1984, but for any entire citizenry, not a mere 1/3, OF malcontents, brainwashed to believe everything backwards.
War is peace! | Freedom is slavery! | Ignorance is strength!
Orwell's was Newspeak. Ours is Trumpspeak.
Obediently, they refuse to watch FAKE NEWS, shackled to NON NEWS from Pravda Fox, for mental programming.
Trump's lack of management experience, and failing to expand his tiny base, has left him vulnerable. For all his tiny hands ego, we see, again, HE is the puppet on a string. His core base owns him. Without them, he has nothing,
Trump's enemies fail to see how often he BEGAN a good deal, but collapsed when his base began screeching. He HAD a deal on the wall, last January, with full funding of $25 million, in return for DACA. Trump then broke his own deal when his base rebelled. The Art of The Squeal.
There are two routes to oppression.
1) Trump's route was being a tyrant his entire life, which family-business owners can become.
2) For his base, many say it's their low education. But it's their low intelligence. They really believe that BELLOWING is how to get their way. It failed when they were playground bullies, and is proven here daily. Who else would DEMAND control of an ENTIRE nation, by 1/3 its voters?
Bellow and bray.
The Trumpian way.
Fuck off Hihn.
" They really believe that BELLOWING is how to get their way. "
Says Mr. RANTING BOLD CAPS.
What a clown.
You missed the timely one.
A couple of days before causing a government shutdown: "I'll take the heat". The day the shutdown actually happened "The Democrats have shut down the government".
The complaints that I like about this article not belonging are spot on, though I think people miss it because of their dislike of Trump. I do not like Trump, and agree with the article that he is a weenie, but as an under-represented philosophy, Libertarianism, we need to realize that Trump is the gift that keeps on giving. Government is not our friend. It is is necessary, I am not a #$*# anarchist, but government always over-extends it's reach to what it should do, it can't help itself. That is why government must be limited! President Bush and Obama both overextended the powers of the Presidency, and both parties were fine with that, as long as it was there guy. But it was bad, bad, bad!! And Trump is proof that the most powerful government executive in the world is both an idiot and incredibly, unreasonably powerful.
Yep, must be really dumb - a successful business man who defeated about twelve professional politicians. Trump may be (given, e.g., demographic trends, the trade imbalance, the national debt, war without end, and the decline of traditional American values) the last best hope for the greatest country ever.
Victims of progressive educators (i.e., the academic and media propaganda pumps) are unwilling to accept this simple truth, or so it seems to me.
You call THEM dumb!!!
1) He's a real estate investor. NOT a businessman.
2) Of his actual businesses all 12 FAILED ... four by bankruptcy.
3) His is a FAMILY business.
4) He inherited nearly half a million from daddy, and would be worth MORE if he'd shut up, sat down and invested in market-yield bonds.
You flunked math, too!
He got the nomination with 35% of the vote, only BECAUSE so many split the other votes. (duh)
Trump campaigned on paying off the entire federal debt in 8 years. Instead, he has ALREADY added more 8-year debt than Obama did AFTER 8 years! The first President to EVER increase the deficit by 47% ... in a single year ... in a booming economy.
You are TOTALLY brainwashed and TOTALLY ignorant of the facts
YOU want to equate his business experience with his Presidential agenda .... like the GREATEST FAILURE on debt in American history.?
Oh.
Trump promised to pay off the entire federal debt in 8 years -- but has ALREADY added MORE 8-year debt than Obama!!!
THE REPUBLICAN NEW DEAL -- ALREADY WORSE THAN OBAMA! (8-year debt)
$ 9.6 T Obama (after 8 years)
$10.7 T Trump (in only TWO years, wants MORE)
Obama's 8-year debt (billions) 19,539.6 - 9,986.1 = 9,553.5
Trump's 8-year debt
$30,042 CBO August Forecast for 2024 (804 estimate for 2018)
++++181 ($985 actual in 2018 - $804 estimate)
---19,549 (Trump inherited)
==10,534 (Trump already)
Trump, first President to EVER increase deficit by 47% ... in one year ... with a booming economy (OMFG) (same link)
Obama inherited 2nd worst recession since the 1930s.
Trump inherited longest recovery EVER for an incoming President -- FROM OBAMA!!!
Dumbfuck Hihnsano having another bitchfit meltdown.
"and would be worth MORE if he'd shut up, sat down and invested in market-yield bonds."
This has been debunked and was only ever believed by stupid people who don't understand the market.
Congrats, you oitwed yourself as one.
Now fuck off Hihn.
I don't know who Hihn is, but how many readers will notice
1) I post facts. with links to proof,
2) You throw childish hissy fits, laced with bullshit.
(Both "comments" above.)
20 years of market gains were ... what?
This is just so disingenuous; one almost wonders if the author isn't trying to foment Trump support, if out of spite.
Much like one has to wonder if Shikha is a Trump plant tasked to discredit the Open Borders crowd.
Half your items are horse hockey. The pipe bombers were obviously leftists pulling false-flag attacks, and the election losses were the result of fraud by Brenda Snipes and others like her, who probably won't get prosecuted because of Democrat saboteurs still infesting the Justice Dept.
I just hope Trump has the guts to keep the shutdown going until every bureaucrat has to quit and find honest work.
Fuck off Hihn.
Rule of Thumb
Whatever Trump is for, TDS is against.
Whatever Trump is against, TDS is for.
+1000
Does this count the things that Trump is both for and against?
Man, I'm late. Everyone made a million and one excuses for Trump already.
It pretty easy since the accusations are something a 5th grader would write.
And that 5th grader could probably, sadly, debate the pro-trump commentariat as easily.
It's like watching the rat in a lab pushing the button for food. Reason posts a trite Trump bashing article - the usual supporters come in and click over and over to comment about "TDS!!"
Should we just call this loop Reason Derangement Syndrome? It's basically a daily occurrence at this point.
Donald Gay Grump loves WAR, it gives his johnson a Lyft
How so?
(You have been called out. Be a man.)
I am trying to remember if any Democrat accepted blame for the attempted assassination of a baseball team's worth of GOP members of Congress. In fact, I seem to remember articles saying that holding the Democrat's rresponsibility for the violent actions of one of their supporters was a divisive act, when the political motivations of that incident were discussed at all.
Exactly what is the number of Democrats who have any blame for the attempted assassination of a baseball team's worth of GOP members?
By my count, the number is somewhere between 0 and 1.
And how is Trump to blame for pipe bombs sent to CNN?
It is not whether the politicians are to blame, it is whether they are held to same standard in similar situations. If blaming Democrats for assassinations done in their name is bad form but the GOP is always responsible for attempted violence done by their supporters, how is that logical stance?
"And how is Trump to blame for pipe bombs sent to CNN?"
Not at all, unless he suggested sending pipe bombs to CNN.
" If blaming Democrats for assassinations done in their name is bad form but the GOP is always responsible for attempted violence done by their supporters, how is that logical stance?"
What, exactly, does " the GOP is always responsible for attempted violence done by the their supporters" have to do with anything I wrote?
"Anger issues.
Because that is what my original post was responding to.
I hate to tell you this, but "the GOP is always responsible for attempted violence done by their supporters" doesn't appear in the text you quoted, either.
It's clearly supposed to be the takeaway from that text.
And equally clearly, it's not actually there.
Because that would be written openly, rather than as an unstated assumption.
Stocks are falling because the Federal Reserve keeps raising interest rates and not because of anything Trump did.
We're also overdue for a correction.
Stocks are falling because the people who buy stocks are anticipating lower returns on their investments.
The thing about the market is that it's largely resistant to minor political arguments, unless they're happening in places our oil comes from.
They're still up 5000 points since Trump was elected.
They're up like 12,000 since Nixon was elected.
For Jacob Sullum, self-love means circle jerking with the never-Trump Neocons and butt-hurt lefties, while never having to acknowledge that Trump's performance in office proves that he's the most libertarian POTUS since Silent Cal.
It's actually entertaining watching the holier-than-thou academic libertarians freaking out that the loud mouth, crude New Yawker is making more progress breaking down the state than any big-L candidate could ever have hoped for.
"never having to acknowledge that Trump's performance in office proves that he's the most libertarian POTUS since Silent Cal."
He's ineffective, which means one-third of the federal government is ineffective.
Congress has also been ineffective, meaning that another third of the federal government is also ineffective.
But neither of these things is on purpose. It's generous to give Mr. Trump credit for "breaking down the state", but perhaps too generous.
Trump a libertarian POTUS! Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaa

And the deranged shitposting begins............
Well, you do actually have it marginally honestly in your screen name, so no one should be surprised.
How do a right-wing wackos respond to DOCUMENTED PROOF that they're wackos?
(label that yourself)
Fuck off Hihn
How does a right-wing THUG respond to DOCUMENTED PROOF that he's a puppet dancing on a string?
As a THUG! (trick question)
Fuck off, Hihn
You can never go wrong to blame the Fed for everything, so just blame the Fed.
If one is a fool.
Roger that. The Fed was organized to financially exploit the wars that began when China outlawed opium dumping there in 1912. Congress used the Treasury to enforce many prohibition laws, and Hoover's Moratorium on Brains helped rearm Germany. The Federal Reserve had almost no impact then. Geithner's manipulations indicate he understood the big picture and was willing to rob foreigners as lustily as they have always been willing to rob these States. What, me worry?
(shudder) The Fed was created to stabilize the banking system, which had been suffering frequent panics. The gold standard had been failing for most of the Industrial Revolution. As the demand for gold kept escalating so much faster than the supply of gold could keep up ... umm, the Law of Supply and Demand (elementary)
Contrary to the gold freaks, the gold standard had failed over a century before the Fed. It was still the 1800s when the US shifted to a bimetallic system by adding silver -- which was also not enough.
See Milton Friedman.
Fuck off Hihn
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH
(1) there is already a wall between US and Mexico
(2) 5 billion for the wall would makeup a tiny ass fraction of the budget and foreign aid.
Trump is mercurial to say the least, but if he was really willing to trade the wall for DACA protection, the democrats could have made Christmas a lot happier for a number of undocumented aliens.
The democrats are a reprehensible bunch, and they spend billions on projects more wasteful than the wall. If fortifying existing border wall isn't racist, then why is racist to just extend it? The democrats funded the ACA scam without congressional approval. I say if there's any legal way Trump can build a wall without involving the house, he
take it.
If a moderate democrat made a pitch for DACA deal involving the wall, I guarantee you most illegals would support it. But the loony left and activist types run the democrat party and their agenda can't be disturbed. 5 billion dollars is like nothing - that's much how we spend. The media isn't telling the full story to everyone.
"(2) 5 billion for the wall would makeup a tiny ass fraction of the budget and foreign aid."
This argument, and others like it, are how you wind up trillions of dollars in debt.
"The democrats are a reprehensible bunch, and they spend billions on projects more wasteful than the wall."
And they should be called on it when they do.
" I say if there's any legal way Trump can build a wall without involving the house, he [should] take it."
Well, he could use HIS money to build it, and bill Mexico. Hell, he can bill them a 10 or 20 percent markup on the project, with my complete blessing.
I wonder if he'd be in more of a hurry to settle "partial" government shutdowns if the Secret Service detail that follows him around the golf course were deemed "not essential"? I mean, if people who disapproved of his job performance could tell him so, directly.
If the knee came came out of the budget as it already stands, then so be it. Keep in mind that the wall will lay dividends as it is built. Cutting the cost of border enforcement in other areas, and lowering other costs by reducing the amount of illegals we're paying for.
" Keep in mind that the wall will lay dividends as it is built. Cutting the cost of border enforcement in other areas, and lowering other costs by reducing the amount of illegals we're paying for."
Thing is, Shitty, I don't have the same blind faith that these effects will magically appear that you do.
For example, how does a wall in Texas make it cheaper to count people getting off airplanes in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and St. Louis?
BINGO. Plus, Trumpsters are TOTALLY clueless on where illegals come from AND how they appear
1) Over half of all illegals are legal entrants, whose visas have expired,
2) Less than half the other illegals come across the Mexican border.
3) Drugs and people have used TUNNELS for decades. (laughing)
It takes some kinda STUPID to think a wall will reduce the costs of surveillance (the tunnels). But Trump's core base are mostly uneducated Gomers who think tariffs and a border wall will increase American jobs.
Go away Hihn. No one is talking to you.
"Thing is, Shitty, I don't have the same blind faith that these effects will magically appear that you do.
For example, how does a wall in Texas make it cheaper to count people getting off airplanes in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and St. Louis?"
Those things having nothing to do with each other. I'm not even sure why you would bring something like that up.
It will however, keep a growing portion of potential illegals out as the wall is extended. The expenses of enforcement and the economic costs related to successfully keeping those peolle out will add up over time.
"It will however, keep a growing portion of potential illegals out as the wall is extended. "
There's no arguing an article of faith with a True Believer.
Of course it will work... it works by magic!.
RINO
Somebody point out to Jacob that stock market values increased monotonously since The Don's outfit beat the econazi coalition--until the Dems clawed back some seats in Congress. That's the point in time where the break occurs and the slope changes sign and gets steep. Since the passage of the income tax the tariff has--as in the cartoon of Howard Taft hitting it as a golf ball--mattered comparatively little. Blaming the Crash on the 1930 tariff shows only that the blamer never read the 1922 and 1930 tariff acts. Prohibition enforcement via asset forfeiture wrecks economies, and socialist looting wrecks economies. Aside from that one point of emphasis, the article is the quality one expects from this reporter.
I clicked on the comments to see the raging snowflake Trumptards upset over a Trump critical article.
I wasn't disappointed.
But you KNEW!
I have to agree with many of the comment that is a useless article.
Mr. Sullum states, "For the last decade, I have been writing an end-of-the-year column recalling memorable examples of blame shifting during the previous 12 months."
Does an article like this even make sense in the Trump Presidency? We have two years of blame shifting and I expect two more. I recommend the author find an alternate topic for the 2019 year end column.
Current technological changes that are so good make it easier for us to get the best variety of information on online sites like this. Seeing a website with such interesting content will make everyone stop and leave a message here http://chippoker.online
Obviously regulatory reform, tax cuts, proposed troop withdrawal, and criminal justice reform are not issues you are interested in. Do the holiday decorations meet your criteria or is that a total failure as well?

I love articles like this that are based on the implication that the acts of a particular politician or particular political party are just so much worse than we have ever seen. And then turns around and uses a lot of tremendously arguable and spun facts to support the assertion all while ignoring the fact that all politicians and political parties will do whatever they can to avoid having to admit fault. But I guess this really is modern journalism these days. Start with a perceived narrative, and then create a story or article that supports that narrative.
" ignoring the fact that all politicians and political parties will do whatever they can to avoid having to admit fault. "
Right. Now, AFTER they do all they can to avoid having to admit fault, and it didn't work, what happens then?
Johnson walked away in 68. Nixon walked away in 73. Reagan didn't walk away, but he did admit that "mistakes were made".. a passive admission, but an admission. Clinton tried to lie his way out of being caught with the intern's pants down. W (and fan club) kept insisting that the WMD WERE there, and the reason they hadn't been found was (insert message of the day).
Do you see a shift there? A turning?
I'm not really sure what you are implying? Are you asserting that presidents used to leave office when caught in a lie, now they don't?
James simply thinks that he's found an article providing him an opportunity to display his intellect.
Sadly for James, he has.
Anybody notice that little story about Putin and his Status 6 long-range underwater stealthy drone submarine program that the Russians call Poseidon and the West calls Kanyon? The weaponized drone carries an updated version of the most powerful enhanced hydrogen bomb ever built.
This is the 60-plus megaton superbomb. That equates to a five orders of magnitude greater blast effect than the Hiroshima bomb. Technical note here--the a-bombs we dropped on Japan produced radioactive fall-out that was deadly enough for several weeks, but not a whole lot of it because both American bombs were air burst detonations.
The Kanyon is being touted by Moscow as a cesium-enhanced dirty bomb. It could penetrate New York harbor, lay on the bottom, and detonate in the mud.
The resultant tsunami will destroy much of coastal New Jersey and 50 miles up the Hudson. The Fall-Out footprint will be much larger if the explosion is timed to offshore winds headed inland. A big chunk of Eastern Seaboard would be really Chernobyl-style uninhabitable for decades.
Would the USA really dare retaliate if just one such superbomb went off at the mouth of the Potomac river, but an hour earlier the Kremlin announced that identical bombs were already in place in the harbors of EVERY American city and that even limited reprisal would cause the next one to be detonated?
Abject capitulation would be the likely result that the Sec. of Agriculture or whoever chooses.
"That equates to a five orders of magnitude greater blast effect than the Hiroshima bomb."
Your math is off. It's about 3 to 4 orders of magnitude from Hiroshima to 60Mt.
"Would the USA really dare retaliate if just one such superbomb went off at the mouth of the Potomac river, but an hour earlier the Kremlin announced that identical bombs were already in place in the harbors of EVERY American city"
Yeah. You'd try to hit the command and control systems that could tell such a bomb to detonate. That such a strike would be very likely to kill whoever ordered the first strike is bonus.
Now, whether the results of a massive strike on Russia would extend to reach the United States...
The answer to the cut-off-the-Russian-head response is for the Kremlin to let it be known that each device has to receive a coded command NOT to detonate every 24 hrs. from headquarters. The massive strike on Russia might make us feel avenged, until our coastal areas became wastelands. We have a lot more to lose. No more Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk, Savannah, Miami, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Wilmington, Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Miami, St. Petersburg/Tampa, Pensacola, New Orleans, Houston/Galveston, San Diego, L.A., San Francisco, Portland, Seattle/Tacoma, Pearl Harbor, Guam, Panama Canal, and so forth.
Russian civilization is a bit funny. The population is highly concentrated in only a handful of cities. Their civil defense and deep survival shelter architecture has been in place for a very long time. A lot of people may disappear from the cities before trouble starts. Lots of empty housing out in the countless villages.
"The answer to the cut-off-the-Russian-head response is for the Kremlin to let it be known that each device has to receive a coded command NOT to detonate every 24 hrs. from headquarters."
Then you nuke the Kremlin for deploying nukes that go off if the antenna breaks off. Nothing to lose... if it's not true, you cut the head off the snake, and if it IS true, it's just a matter of time until those things start going off on accident anyway.
"Portland"
Get out a map. Now, look at Portland's seacoast. What's that you say? Portland is a hundred miles inland from the seacoast? There's a fairly substantial mountain range between Portland and the Pacific?
Hint: Back in my younger days, when I was an enlisted man... I was in a NORAD unit... in Portland.
I just signed up for a new subscription and after reading Jacob Sullum's latest year-end comments I fear my request for a subscription was a grave mistake. EVERY THING President Trump says and tweets should be taken in the context that almost EVERY form of media and almost EVERY PUNDIT refuses to accept the FACT that he is the duly elected PRESIDENT of this nation, and the above sources constantly seek to distort everything he does or says. If those at REASON MAGAZINE do not think that this country is far better off now than when he came into office, and do not think that President Trump is seeking to guide this nation in a far more positive direction, then I fear my interest in REASON MAGAZINE will not survive the promised 3-month free offer. Reagan redirection our ship-of-state after the Carter disaster, and President Trump is doing the very same thing after Obama. Trump is not perfect, but he has done more positive things for this nation in the past two years than any other president in modern history.
"EVERY THING President Trump says and tweets should be taken in the context that almost EVERY form of media and almost EVERY PUNDIT refuses to accept the FACT that he is the duly elected PRESIDENT of this nation"
WHERE are you finding ANYONE who doesn't know that TRUMP won the election and is NOW PRESIDENT of the UNITED States of AMERICA???
You nailed it. Trump has been willing to negotiate on most, if not all issues. The democrats claim he's unreasonable because he won't cave in and time them everything they want and nothing he wants.
"What's truly ironic in all of this is how willing trump actually is to negotiate things with democrats, and how unwilling they are to engage in real legislative crafting. Daca being a prime example... "
He's willing to sit down and negotiate, and give to get, until he isn't, and then blames the other negotiating party (whoever they are) for the failure. You can't successfully negotiate with a clown who acts in this manner, has no principles, and can be swayed by zealots, the wind, or the last person he talked to that day. DACA? Whatever side you were on for daca, the "negotiations" were a joke. He brings everyone in, clearly has no clue what he is talking about, offers the dems daca vs potential immigration reform (also says he will take the mantle up if its unpopular, bc he's a tough guy), McCarthy/repubs slap his hand, then he goes back on his word, takes all that off the table and blames the dems for the failure. Would you negotiate with anyone who acted this way for a business deal? The dems of course are shitty untrustworthy politicians, but you couldn't have watched all that happen and think it was their fault.
Taking his ball and going home, and stiffing contractors he could bury in lawsuits if he wanted was his M.O. and worked well with rinky-dink shops that couldn't afford to fight him. Now everyone sees his true "deal making" power.
Don't blame the legislators. YOU helped elect them
The real problem is "I'm taking my ball and going on an ideological rant on tv, then home" has become the new norm for our legislators, instead of actually reaching compromises.
Yes, the government would be so much better if it were more efficient at the ass-raping, that's always been the primary complaint of libertarians such as myself.
The Lefties cannot stand Trump's type of negotiation. He knows when he has the upper hand and is not a push over.
He gets the terms directly to the public via twitter and challenges the other party on whatever issue it is. When the other party thinks that they can use propaganda from people like Sullum to "win", Trump calls the lefties out.
The Lefties hate that they cannot steam roller Trump. They fucking hate it!
I wonder if it has anything to do with almost 100% media backing to support and spin any Democrat intransigence as being best thing for the country? I think we libertarians could get away with tons of crap, too, if most of the major media was our cheering section.
While I agree with you about Trump's willingness to negotiate, this was predictable. The Republicans stood in front of the cameras hoping Obama would be a failed president and voted against their own legislation as to not give Obama a political win. Politicians have long memories, at least for bad things. This stuff has been going on between the two parties since Nixon's Watergate resignation. This is why we need more political parties.
To be fair. The democrats have been dealing with weak willed north eastern "conservatives" for decades and are used to the caving with even the tiniest pressure from the media.
It's perfectly reasonable to blame the other side in the negotiation, when their negotiating position is, "We get everything we want, and nothing you want is on the table."
Unlike the eminently reasonable Obama healthcare negotiations with Republicans, right? What was his negotiating position again? wasn't it something like "elections have consequenses, I won." and that was the start and end of negotiations before the door was locked.
This is the compromise plan that Trump rejected from the outset:
http://www.washingtontimes.com.....-falls-sh/
It is not fair to characterize this plan as Dems saying "we get everything we want and nothing you want is on the table".
By the way, Brett.
What IS Trump's position on DACA?
Exactly Brett. +100
He agreed to give all DACA kids a path to citizenship in exchange for regulatory fixes to immigration like ending chain migration. But youve been in threads where this is discussed Mr. Goldfish.
The shutdown threats are a perfect example of that.
The only political groups that really care about federal government shutdowns are the Lefties and the RINOs.
Any political group that is conservative and/or wants to cut federal spending is fine with government shutdowns. Especially if it leads to cuts to the budget or things to limit federal spending.
"The democrats have been dealing with weak willed north eastern "conservatives" for decades and are used to the caving with even the tiniest pressure from the media"
Yeah, Cheney was known for his weak will and north eastern background.
Chemjeff has a Lefty position to push. He wont let reason or factual information stop him.
Is that his current position?
"He was against it before he was for it" or something
No one really knows what he actually wants done about DACA. That is part of the problem here.
Did you read the article I posted above?
Little Jeffy only really cares about open borders. And that mean old Mr. Trump is in the way!
The right-wing talking points around here truly are a marvel to behold.
"Trump tried to negotiate in good faith but those mean Dems just wouldn't give an inch!!!!"
"Actually, Trump's positions kept shifting from day to day, and Dems did offer a compromise..."
"Shut up! You just have TDS! Trump is right and Dems are mean meanies!"
No, Jeff, that's not his 'current' position'. That was his starting position on DACA--take care of ALL the 'dreamers' (the thing Democrats claimed to want) plus a bunch more illegals in exchange for setting up things to see to it that it won't get like this again. A wall, ends to chain migration, alterations to birthright citizenship.
He was willing to give Democrats EVERYTHING they said they wanted in exchange for some things he'd promised.
The Trumpistas were actually angry with him. Because it looked like he was caving, letting in over a million illegals.
But he was playing that n- dimensional chess-- his move made it clear that the Dems didn't want to help the dreamers, they wanted to use them as pawns to make Trump look bad--and nothing more.
"No one really knows what he actually wants done about DACA. "
He wants the brown people to go away, unless they have a big pile of money AND he can figure out a way to get some of it for himself.
Actually, it's more poor people he'd like to get rid of, rather than any specific color of them.
These shutdowns only cost more money, you idiot. Cutting programs is the job of Congress. And as much as you try to rationalize, you won't change the fact that it will be blamed on Trump.
Well, the two we have are failures. The republicans are weak sell outs, and the democrats are a nest of Marxist traitors and cronyists. The people running both parties have no interest in any other than growing government.
At least Trump isn't really part of that. Hence the hate from both parties.
And before that it was Pelosi. Remember when GWB tried putting through SS changes that would make that system more sustainable and her response to the press was "plan, we don't need a plan. We just need to stop this President." But that's compromise for Democrats.
Blamed on Trump by whom? In a year, let alone two, the only people giving a shit about this, or even remembering the shutdown are people what have already made up their minds about their voting choices.
Most of America is barely aware of this shit. Because it really doesn't effect them. Or people plowed my brother in law, who is a senior project manager at a government contractor that has to work with GS employee counterparts. He was excited about how much work he could get done without those unproductive duds in the way. Apparently, the govt. workers are so awful they are actually an impediment.
"it will be blamed on Trump."
This is literally the only thing the left actually cares about. It is always the topic of conversation during shutdowns because it is how the left thinks they "win" the shutdown.
Not doing right by their constituents, or the country, but how can we make sure the other guy gets the blame.
Poor Tony does not know that Congress can override any Trump veto or refusal to sign a budget.
Republicans in Congress shut this government down along with Trump.
Its awesome!
By 'right wing talking points', do you mean 'enforcing our immigration laws'? I say that since you always have this emotional response bereft of facts whenever the subject of immigration comes up. No one can have a productive discussion with you on the subject because of that.
Which is why he offered to let them and some other people stay?
Thinking is work. I guess it's easier for someone, such as yourself, to just cry 'racist'.
No, "the left" cares about government functioning like it's supposed to. I don't know why Americans keep electing people who promise to govern poorly. And Republicans can't even manage to spend less money.
The difference is that Libertarians do the right thing according to their fundamentals whether people are looking or not.
Because Democrats actually govern poorly, but with a heavy and sanctimonious hand.
You're proving my point for me. Only the people who are already decided in their voting habits pay any attention to shutdowns. And of you call how the federal government currently functions "how it's supoosed to", you just proved a number of other points made by myself and so many other here in the past.
Only a slaver like you would think this isn't a bunch of unconstitutional, mission creeping, rent seeking bullshit.
Obama was a shitty negotiator and a politician many found to be lacking or disappointing. What's your point man?
If I see you shit your pants, trip, fall, and faceplant, then make fun of you, your response is going to be: "but what about that retard that lives down the road who shits his pants every day?! He is REALLY embarassing"
What-about-ism doesn't work with people who don't hold your counter example in any regard.
"Unlike the eminently reasonable Obama healthcare negotiations with Republicans, right?"
Obama didn't negotiate with Republicans at all. The negotiations, such as they were, were in Congress.
Obama tried to reach out. His initial cabinet had several Republicans in it. He was wasting his time.
"elections have consequences" is absolutely something Obama said... but it's not something he invented. In fact, it's fairly clear he cribbed it from noted liberal wussy Dick Cheney.
"The situation you describe only existed largely because the bulk of our media thought they were "teeing up" trump for hillturd."
They didn't think Republicans would be stupid enough to nominate him. They were incorrect. They didn't think voters would be stupid enough to elect him. They were incorrect about that, too.
Now can put on partisan goggles, and look at it in one of two ways.
Maybe Trump is just baiting the media, and those poor suckers keep falling for it.
Or, maybe the media just keeps Trump too busy whining about SNL and the failing NYT, so he doesn't have time to figure out how to actually do anything else.
Then you take off the partisan goggles, and you see that journalists feel duty bound to report on what he does, because he's the President, and he just keeps doing stupid shit. About 30% of the population sees his job as antagonizing libruls, and think he's doing a great job at that.
" I guess it's easier for someone, such as yourself, to just cry 'racist'."
"poor" isn't a race, Shitty. Was reading through all the way to the end of three sentences too much for you?
"By 'right wing talking points', do you mean 'enforcing our immigration laws'?"
No. The hangup in enforcing our immigration laws is... our immigration laws. Specifically, the one that caps the number of people who can hear deportation hearings, which effectively caps the number of deportation hearings held each year at a number way too low to deport all the illegals, both those already here and those still arriving.
In the face of this, every President going back to Reagan has decided to prioritize who gets a hearing and who stays in place waiting for one. We usher to the front of the line three categories... recent arrivals, convicted criminals, and repeat deportees. Obama enforced our immigration laws just the same as the other Presidents going back to Reagan. He actually asked the R-controlled Congress for permission to hire more hearings officers to hold more deportation hearings, and they... didn't bother to entertain the idea.
Trump isn't "enforcing immigration law" any better than the Presidents who came before. This is because, without a change in the law, he literally can't.
Disagree with provable facts?
(yawn)
Pretty much.
Good point Mickey. In trying to control everything, their reach has vastly exceeded their grasp.
That is.....selective at best.
Missed that. Is there a problem getting rid of poor illegals?
"Is there a problem getting rid of poor illegals?"
yep. We've managed to accumulate somewhere between 10 and 20 million of them. We can deport a little over 400,000 of them per year under current law.
Did you get your cracker, James?
Was it good?
