NPR Poll: Most Americans Hate Political Correctness, At Least If You Don't Define It
Call it the "Baby, It's Cold Outside" backlash.

A majority of Americans do not want the country to become more politically correct, according to a new poll by NPR/PBS Newshour/Marist.
Some 52 percent of respondents said they were "upset that there are too many things people can't say anymore." Another 36 percent thought heightened sensitivity was a good thing, and the rest were conflicted or unsure. Most Democrats favored political correctness, but both Republicans and independents were against it.
NPR described this finding as a "big warning sign for Democrats," since voters do not share progressive activists' appetite for punishing insufficiently woke expression.
"If the Democratic Party moves in a direction that is more to its base on this issue, it suggests independents are going to be tested to stay with the Democrats electorally," Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, told NPR.
Another recent study found that 80 percent of respondents thought political correctness was a problem. And while critics often mock the idea that PC-run-amok drove voters into the arms of the most anti-PC candidate, Donald Trump, some evidence has emerged to support the proposition.
But here's one issue: The poll didn't rigorously define political correctness, and that could have influenced the result. This of course points to a larger problem—i.e., that "political correctness" is a poorly defined term in general, and may mean vastly different things to different people.
For instance, the political scientist Kevin Collins suggested the wording should have been this: "Do you think that members of racial groups should be called by terms generally preferred by those groups, or should non-members of those groups be free to use any terms they like without social repercussions?" If the question were asked this way, I suspect fewer people would have signaled a discomfort with what Collins has defined as political correctness.
I have tried to define political correctness somewhat differently, as a system of informal social sanction deployed against people for making problematically worded but benign statements due to ignorance rather than malice (like not knowing that it's preferable to say black people or people of color instead of African Americans or blacks).
A great many people, I suspect, would not be able to offer any workable definition of political correctness, but they know it when they see it, and for them, it takes the form of #MeToo feminists trying to get "Baby, It's Cold Outside" yanked from the airwaves. If you really think this kind of political correctness could not possibly backfire on liberals, consider that the 70-year-old song is currently climbing the Billboard charts, and one radio station decided to play it for two hours straight just to really stick it to all those snowflakes.

I wonder what the advertisers think of playing the same song for two hours straight. It's funny as hell, it probably does annoy a lot of snowflakes, but I doubt very many people listen to more than the second or third iteration, and I bet advertisers know that.
This is true.
It's of course very sad to read this sort of fake news. Most of our fellow Americans are dismayed that any songs with inappropriate lyrics are allowed to play on the air, and feel that they should be rapidly banned, blocked, and subject to fines and other punishments, just like harmful "parody" that impugns a reputation. See the documentation of our great nation's leading criminal "satire" case at:
https://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/
Yeah, but they've been doing it for centuries, from the right.
Or much worse, like Charlottesville.
Appropriate efforts to limit so-called "free speech" (ha-ha-ha) come from the "left" as well as the "right," especially in academic circles. Here at NYU we have safe spaces and trigger warnings just like elsewhere, and we are particularly vigilant when we see illegitimate efforts to harm the reputations of our distinguished colleagues, in whatever field they teach, with "criticism" and allegations that crosses the line.
How many of those advertisers care about the one time two hour stunt?
Probably none.
Most radio listeners don't listen to one station for very long anyway. About half the length of their commute or so. And advertisers definitely know that (and pay accordingly).
So my guess is that the PR-stunt value to listenership numbers outweighed the nuisance cost in this case.
Yeah, that's probably true. Some dude turning on for the morning commute of 15 minutes could well just leave it there rather than take time finding an alternate station for the few minutes remaining and have to reset it the next commute.
Depends also if they played the same version for two straight hours, or played as many different versions of the song they could find. I suspect there are hundreds of versions of it.
It sounds like NPR (et alia) failed to massage the results by crafting the right question.
""Do you think that members of racial groups should be called by terms generally preferred by those groups, or should non-members of those groups be free to use any terms they like without social repercussions?"
Shorter question: Are you an insensitive bigot?
Defining that as political correctness exposes their complete tone-deafness about the issue.
This is such a *minute* part of political correctness.
And where can I register to vote on my preferred term for my ethnicity?
"Do you think that members of racial groups should be called by terms generally preferred by those groups, or should non-members of those groups be free to use any terms they like without social repercussions?"
This, of course, still has issues because who gets to define what terms are "generally preferred" by a whole racial group? Do we have to hold a national or worldwide referendum on the issue? And who gets to decide which individuals are in each racial group? Can you self-identify?
My census form says I'm "white" but it's pronounced "Throat-Warbler Mangrove".
You are very silly man, and I'm not going to interview you.
Upper middle class white people with advanced liberal arts degrees, duh.
According to family friends to whom the terms apply, "Indian" is polite, "Native American" is a nuisance, and "First Nation" is condescending. However, according to academia, the levels of politeness are reversed. And if you say "Person of Color" to any black man or woman I know, you will get at best an exasperated glance. Some will then lecture you not to call them "colored".
I prefer the term American Aboriginal.
Indian means from India, a country in South Asia.
Native American is only used to clarify when someone says Indian but doesn't seem to be talking about Asians.
First Nations only refers specifically to certain Canadian Aboriginals.
Aboriginal-American would be any Australian Aboriginals living in America.
None of this, however, is racial. Knowing a Cherokee doesn't want to be mistaken for a Kiowa is functionally equivalent to a Bulgarian not wanting to be mistaken for a Russian.
This is easy. Indian with a dot, not Indian with a feather. Or Indian with a feather, not and Indian with a dot.
This is so universal. What could be clearer. I have always heard it this way. And some of my best friends are Indians.Just sayin'
I find "dot or feather?" to be a vestige of a less aware time. It assumes all Indians are Hindi (which they're not) and assumes all American Aboriginals wore feathers (which they didn't).
It's tantamount to discerning between (the) two Georgia(n)s by asking "criminals or Christians?"
That said, I don't find it offensive, just demode.
I worked several years in dependency court handling ICWA cases. Over that time I conducted my own informal poll of clients and tribal representatives on the questions "how do you refer to yourselves as a people (tribe, nation, etc)" and how do you refer to other 'Indians'"? Most often they told me that they had no problem with the term "Indian", and referred to "Indians" generally as "the people". None of them liked the term "Native American", and none thought the Washington Redskins or Cleveland Indians should change their names. The left is all for self-determination but I guess they have to draw the line somewhere.
Whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh
Why call them anything?
Tht's not PC. It's having an IQ higher than a toad.
Say, how about you crawl back into the DU swamp from which you've emerged.
COWARDY DIVERSION
"Why call them anything?"
Anyone with the IQ of a toad should be able to deal with that.
In my house, I have to correct my wife that the laundry is not "colored," it's "clothes of color." Come on, honey, get woke!
Wait, I'm suppsed to say "black people" instead of "blacks"? Since when?
Also, "people of color" is far too close to "colored", and it is NOT synonymous with "black people".
Everything goes full circle.
Negro was out because it was too close to "that word which shall not be written", so the country went with colored. Colored became problematic post-civil rights act, so we went with black.
Black has been off the table for 30 years, but it was funny watching the Black Student Caucus lecture the campus on how black was out and African American was in while accepting scholarship money from the NAACP.
African American is now out and it's "Persons of color". As you point out, in a couple of years that will be deemed too close to "colored people" and we'll be back in black. Or maybe negro.
But it's not really about any of these words. It's about perpetual outrage, and that fire requires constant tending.
Say it loud! I'm black and I'm proud!
-- James Brown
Black power. Black pride. Black is beautiful. The Black Panthers. And even now Black lives matter. I don't know if I've ever met a black person who resents being called black, or who doesn't refer to him or herself in that way.
But if you really want to know how people feel about political correctness, ask "Should a person lose their job, have their life destroyed or even be put in jail because they call another person a name that the other person arbitrarily decides they don't like?"
Or how about we drop "persons of color" without replacing it and start referring to white people as either melanin challenged or melanin impaired. 🙂
You can't call people challenged or impaired anymore either.
Hell, whites are a global minority. We're melanin atypical.
Wait, no, whites are evil, too. It must be because we're melanin deficient.
Differently hued.
People of no color
Literally all of my black friends prefer to be referenced as black over any other terms.
Some find the implication that they will take offense to being called black, well, offensive

I know, right? This is where I was going to comment.
(like not knowing that it's preferable to say black people or people of color instead of African Americans or blacks)
"Black people" is now the preferred term over "African American"?
Seriously, fuckers, I don't even care about PC because it's overdone, I care because I can't fucking keep up with the phrase of the week.
Exactly. If I could learn the right phrase, train myself to use it, and then be done with it, that would be one thing.
But making me keep up with your supersonic evolving terms is obnoxious. I get that it's by design -- by establishing moral superiority via level of aggrievedness, it promotes a race to the most intersectional and a need to constantly assert your grievances. But this is exactly why it's so aggravating to try to respect your demands.
Why use any phrase at all, goober.
You need specific names for all the different groups. And if there's one thing I've learned from progressives, it's that *NOTHING* is more important that separating people into distinct groups...
I had someone tell me that it's rude to refer to someone as "a Jew" and you should say that they're "Jewish."
uh o k
"Ugh, fine...Jewish denied my loan application at the bank. Happy?!"
This of course points to a larger problem?i.e., that "political correctness" is a poorly defined term in general, and may mean vastly different things to different people.
For leftists, that's a feature, not a bug. It's a rhetorical strategy designed to keep the issue muddled so they can have it both ways. When challenged, they'll say it just means being nice. But in practice is means speech (and, they hope, thought) control.
Kind of like Feminism, Socialism, common sense gun control, global warming (oops climate change) and everything else in the commie portfolio.
If you think the right is not the same ... you will deny being a bigot, right ?
The militant self-righteous.
Tell us all, in your infinite wisdom, how the right mirrors the political correctness of the left.

""Do you think that members of racial groups should be called by terms generally preferred by those groups, or should non-members of those groups be free to use any terms they like without social repercussions?" "
I think that people should be able to call other people whatever they feel like calling them....provided they are willing to cope with the consequences without hiding behind the Law. If you are Whitebread and Mayo and you walk up to a obvious Black Militant and call him a 'dumb jungle bunny' or a 'nigger', then you should be ready to deal with the beatdown he is going to try to lay on you, and you may not go whining to the cops about all the teeth he knocked out.
Arrest such an idiot for 'Hate Speech? No. Tell him his contusions are simply what he bargained for? Yup.
Does this imply that if he calls me a "cracker" I can plug him? 'Cause I'm getting a bit on in years to deliver a beatdown.
You can beat anyone down for getting called anything, Morecowbell.
LMFAO is this satire?
Black violence is ok by CSPS since words are violence.
Yeah. Somewhat. I do think there should be a "What did you expect?" clause in a lot of law about assault and battery, but I admit I don't see how it would work.
Its that there are Laws, and here are The Rules. By Law a Black person should have the right to have a drink unmolested in the local KKK hangout. The Rules state that he's have to be out of his mind to try, and that expending tax money to allow him to do so is interfering with his God given right to commit suicide.
Here on Planet Earth, we call it common sense, freely chosen, not "rules." Just as a Klansman would not go to an NAACP rally in his hood, which -- wild guess here -- he'd have to be fucking crazy to do.
Exactly like that Black person! No conspiracy. No sinister rules ....
What happens if one calls Rick Santorum a christo-fascist?
If you are Whitebread and Mayo and you walk up to a obvious Black Militant and call him a 'dumb jungle bunny' or a 'nigger', then you should be ready to deal with the beatdown he is going to try to lay on you, and you may not go whining to the cops about all the teeth he knocked out.
Why go here?
This type of thing is so rare that when it does happen the entire nation screams in outrage.
The reverse is so common, so mundane that the whites that take umbrage to it are called whiners because denigrating whites has become the norm.
White people routinely rend their own flesh before opining on nearly any issue these days, to speak from a place of abject humility for the mountains of sins committed by other whites.
Arrest the black person who used racial slurs against whites? No--arrest the white person for noticing--charge them with 'hate speech'.
And no one will even notice.

Well done.
There is no clear definition because it's meant to be a moving target for the outrage mob. That way they get to keep moving goal posts and redefining words and jargon as they go. We just can 'sense' when PC outrage is on the march.
Take this woke gibberish from Harvard Business Review:
https://bit.ly/2R4olY2
"problematically-worded"
I don't have a definition at hand but I will never accept one that uses adjectives abused by progressives to virtue signal
it's meant to be a moving target for the outrage mob
Yes, the constantly changing argot, which only those actively engaged with the Right-thinking People can keep up with, is intended as shibboleths to out casual posers and infiltrators. It's quite similar to the very elaborate table manners and social customs devised by 19th century aristocrats to trip up New Money pretenders.
Goddamn.
I've often thought it must be sort of comfortable to be that stupid. If you're smart, you have to actually worry about things. If you're an idiot, you just don't know enough to even be concerned.
I guess we could ask Artie what it's like.
Today's troll, "DiscoverLIBERTY", sounds a lot like Artie, with the "goobers" and bigot, being thrown around.
It also sounds somewhat like Tony.
However it is Hihn, who has begun to use different screen-names.
So sad, that your life is so barren.
YOU SAY BIGOT IS AN UNUSUAL WORD?
I am injured. Is "African American" now beyond the pale? The dusky demands of the mob grow ever larger.
"dusky demands" is racist, you racist.
Implying the definition of "dusky" is racist!
"African American" may or may not be beyond the pale, but it was always stupid. Nobody has "African" heritage, any more than I have "European" heritage or Edward James Olmos has "Latin American" heritage. Your heritage derives from a particular country (or countries with a common culture, such as Scandinavian).
I think part of the problem here is that the left is using PC in one way as a weapon, while tendentiously defining it in a very different way in order to defend it.
Exactly, it's a Motte-and-Bailey. Check the link I posted above.
How is the right any different on PC?
How is the right the same? What terms does the right go to war over to make others use? Yes, the right has strong political opinions about certain regimes (eg, Cuba or North Korea), but that is hardly the same as "political correctness". Stop with the faux equivalency or substantiate your point, if you really have one.
I have tried to define political correctness somewhat differently, as a system of informal social sanction deployed against people for making problematically-worded but benign statements due to ignorance rather than malice
Yeah, and some of us think "problematic" is problematic. We're not making "problematically-worded but benign statements due to ignorance", we're getting accused of making "problematic" statements by malicious rat-fucking shit-eating little cunts who hate our guts and will accuse us of literally raping dead babies no matter what we say. "Political correctness" isn't a matter of being told to use polite euphemisms, it's a matter of being told you're not allowed to say there's four lights.
Words have meanings and political correctness is a matter of disguising the meanings of words. If you call 911 and tell them you have an undocumented resident of your house borrowing things without permission and would like them to do something about it, you might get their attention a little better by telling them some fucker broke into your house and is stealing your shit, no matter how much it might hurt your dear little friend's feelings.
911 is just for emergencies. Use the regular number to have the medical examiner pick up the body of the home invader who threatened you and your family.
Attaching a qualifier, such as "political", to a word that has its own meaning, like "correct", basically means "not".
Similar to one of my other hated qualifiers - "substantive" due process.
(laughing) "Politically" describes WHAT TYPE of correctness.
It's an adjective. Like a RED car
And you can educate yourself on "substantive" here.
So the term Politically Correct, when used by the left or right, they're saying it's NOT correct ... but they want to impose it anyhow. In your view. Hmmm.
Beat me to this, and said it better. Bravo
Taco Tuesday
Indian mascots
Confederate monuments
All very politically incorrect as they are very offensive to people of color the white left.
What's funny is Andrew Cuomo signed a bill making the statue of Columbus in Columbus Circle a protected landmark.
Well of course, Cuomo is a dago after all. Or is the preferred term wop?
eggplant.
Dumb ass democrat?
I am old enough to remember when persons of southern extraction objected to the use of the words "Civil War" and insisted on "War Between the States".
Rocky and Bullwinkle had fun with that.
Here is a link to the episode
I hope I did not SF the link, it is my first try
Actually, the preferred term for a while now has been "War Against Southern Independence". Which at least has the virtue of a reasonable degree of accuracy.
What happened to "The war of northern aggression "?
If you've been following the culture war, you know the writing is on the wall. Vox, in their infinite wisdom, decided to declare war against the most polular youtuber PewDiePie for crimes against wokeness. Their actions are red pilling millions of 9 year olds, pushing formerly apolitical youths to take a side against them and their creepy cult. You can see this behavior manifest on apps like TikTok where the new form of teenage rebellion is overt ridicule of woke culture. High priests are starting to get visibly nervous, and Patreon is going down in flames over a politically motivated ban of Sargon of Akkad. Needless to say, I'm fairly optimistic about the future.
red pilling
But see how much fun political correctness can be? Not only do PC people get to make up new slang and redefine words but so do the non-PC people to counter it.
Do you need me to explain to you what that phrase means? Your attempted snark serves only to expose your lack of awareness.
I looked up what the term means. Maybe you can explain how it didn't become a thing because of PC backlash.
Why don't you disprove the thing I just made up?
I guess I should stop being surprised by what people choose to get butthurt (another wonderful new anti-PCism) about.
People laughing at internet retards are really just butthurt.
"Butthurt" goes way back. I remember using in the WC3 days (2001-2004) all the time.
"Red pill", as most of you know, goes back to The Matrix (1999). It simply means coming to the realization that what you thought you knew your whole life was a deception. For example, I didn't learn that socialism was detrimental to working class interest until I was out of college. That tidbit of knowledge is sometimes called a red pill. It typically leads to a sense of betrayal and subsequent political awakening.
"Red Pill" has been in common usage on the right going back to at least the first Moldbug essays.
Funny, having spent some time in right-wing circles, reading their press and listening to their commentators, I don't recall ever having read or heard that phrase. Nor do I know (or case) who the hell "Moldbug" is.
I LOVE irony. You whine about butthurt, because YOU'VE been butthurt. And quite testy about it.
>>>Do you think that members of racial groups
no. stop thinking in terms of groups. call people by their names.
I remember the time when African American was the PC term.
That is part of the problem with PC. It is an ever shifting group of standards that changes to fit whatever whatever the current political goals of activists are. It is a neverending, unfun game of Calvinball.
I remember hearing the comedian Paul Rodriguez making fun of this way back in the early 90s. He said that as an American of Mexican descent, he used to describe himself as Chicano. Bur then he was told he must call himself Mexican-American. Later he was told, no no, you're Hispanic. Still later he was criticized for saying Hispanic and was told he's Latino. And he says, "Now I don't know what the hell I am anymore!"
American. No hyphens needed.
"Do you think that members of racial groups should be called by terms generally preferred by those groups, or should non-members of those groups be free to use any terms they like without social repercussions?"
Yes, that's the only thing people are complaining about when they mention political correctness. /sarc
How about, "do you think it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice?"
"Do you think that racism is bad?"
"Do you think women are people?"
That will poll better than asking about the right-wing scare-term "political correctness."
/sarc /sarc /sarc
"Political correctness" is not a "right-wing scare term". The first time I heard it was in about 1985 when I was in law school, and a lesbian feminist friend of mine used it to describe people who opposed unlimited abortion rights ("not politically correct"). I had the temerity to ask her who it was that got to define what was "politically correct", and the resulting chill lasted several months.
Different term. Similar oppression
It BEGAN on the right, centuries ago. Book bans and burning. TV/MOVIE censorship. McCarthyism, and more..
A great many people, I suspect, would not be able to offer any workable definition of political correctness
I'm sure the absolute loathing of political correctness has everything to do with the vague, technical unworkability of distinguishing 'blacks' vs. 'black people' and nothing to do with disingenuous shit stains claiming moral and intellectual superiority arbitrarily.
Robby, having a firm definition of political correctness that is in no way vague or unworkable, can feel free to set himself aside from the other shit stains.
I'm beginning to understand why you people hate Jordan Peterson.
Edgy
Just put everyone of the separate races into distinct racial groups, ask them what they want to be called, and then call them that. Simple! Duh.
maybe we could give them armbands with their preferred classification?
maybe we could give them armbands with their preferred classification?
touche squirrels
Race is a social construct, as is gender and adulthood.
^^ thank you.
Political correctness is shockingly easy to define:
If I have to hedge words and offer excessive clarification because I think people will become offended by a statement not meant to offend, I'm being politically correct. These are barriers that interfere with effective communication.
Obviously, there are some things people say where they might not care if people are offended, and are in fact meant to be edgy or offensive. There's plenty of other relatively harmless statements that people MIGHT take offense to because the wrong person is saying it, or using the wrong words, or just isn't self-flagellating enough before saying it.
Not even close. It's the elites, the PC Police, who rage and shame their minions. Guilt trips,
We see it on mostly on Fox News from the right, mostly academia on the left.
And each BELEEBS only the other tribe is guilty.
That's one main reason that left and right are now less than 40% combined, so each is now in desperation.
It will keep getting more vicious for now, from that desperation, until they get closer to extinction
It's now a death spiral. As more Americans reject both tribes, the remaining zealots and fanatics have a louder voice, which drives still more away, which increases the zealotry and fanaticism, driving more away .... it's very vicious now ... until the collapse of them, which will trigger re-liberation of the American culture.
And, of course, you're one of those "tribeless" people, right Hihn?
Nether right, or left, says the committed commie.
Spare us.
Or more commonly - Fuck off Hihn!
Yes, we libertarians have been that way for 50 years.
You don't know what "both" means?
YOU assume left and right are the only tribes. On what basis?
LIBERTARIANS have been neither left nor right for 50 years. The reason is obvious.
If we are fiscally conservative and socially liberal ... are we right or left?
And why do you assume there are only two tribes?
If "political correctness" means everyone is legally required to refer to non-binary people like me by our preferred they / them pronouns, then political correctness is clearly a good thing. Only science-denying hateful bigots would disagree.
I don't see your preferred pronoun in your handle or link. Twitter users know to put it in their bios. Try to keep up, neoliberal scum.
I think I'm already getting close to the character limit with OpenBordersLiberal-tarian. Not sure OpenBordersLiberal-tarian(they/them) would fit. Maybe I'll try later.
And my link obviously has to go to the best piece of libertarian writing I've ever seen. So what if it doesn't directly address gender identity or preferred pronouns. Like all good Koch / Reason libertarians, my primary objective is to abolish all US border enforcement.
It keeps its eyes on the prize!
It's going to shoot up a Mexican grocery store when it finally breaks.
Don't expect much from a thug who BRAGS BELLOWS of being a thug.
Libertarians, of course, reject aggression ... along with a growing majority of Americans.
And SERIAL aggression ... like a serial rapist.
(shudder)
When I am being coerced into violating basic grammar rules, then PC becomes too much for me. "They" is (or is that are?) plural. Referring to a singular in the plural hurts me.
When I am being condescendingly lectured to about using a term that is not hurtful, then PC becomes objectionable, especially when the motivation of the thought police is clearly to wield power and to silence me, then PC becomes objectionable.
A prime example is the "safe space" nonsense. The motivation for safe spaces isn't to provide a warm cocoon for psychologically damaged people, it is simply a jack-boot placed on the throat of political opponents, a metaphorical jack-boot at the moment, soon to be a very real jack-boot soon, I fear.
it is simply a jack-boot placed on the throat of political opponents
Yes, because of the obvious implication that the speech of others is a real danger to those who claim to need "safe spaces". Acquiesce to safe spaces and you've admitted that the advocates of safe spaces are justified in using or demanding force be used to silence those who are "endangering" them.
Is your Safe Space frequently violated, as you describe here?
From the left, the right or both?

If "political correctness" means everyone is legally required to refer to non-binary people like me by our preferred they / them pronouns, then political correctness is clearly a good thing. Only science-denying hateful bigots would disagree.
"Legally required to refer" sounds like that awful "collective" deciding what we can, and can't say; AKA government censorship.
Surely you can't be in favor of that.
Where is your reverence for the legal requirement that you go through the government process, to be allowed to cross into that government's sovereign territory?
I have a question for you "open borders" types: Does it work both ways? Can we go and do whatever we want in other countries? Violate their laws, like you think third-worlders should be able to do to ours?
Well that's a goddam good question retiredfire. "Open borders" is an oxymoron of course. If you want to be a world-wide anarchist OBL, just say that. But governments require boundaries/borders.
"Think It Through" OUTSIDE the box!
"Science-denying"? If by "non-binary" you mean "transgender" or some such, you are not exactly being scientific. Humans are of two genders; if a given person can't quite figure out which gender he or she is that's a particular problem for that particular person, but it does not change the basic, scientific reality." You are the "science-denying, hateful bigot" for pretending otherwise and castigating those who do not blindly kowtow to your misconceptions.
Learn about HORMONES ... when you take high school biology.
You don't know that reality
Most Americans favor "free" medical care until they find they have to pay for it.
Why do Americans hate political correctness?
I think George Carlin had the answer when he said, "political correctness is fascism disguised as good manners."
The more the boot comes down on likeable figures such as Kevin Hart, the more people will resent it. Not that complicated.
So, we get some self-righteous preaching on boots coming down, from a PROUD serial aggressor thug.
Ignorant but benign statements like stating the monarch is walking about in public without clothing?
I admit to being quite befuddled by all this. Is it okay to call Bruce Jenner "Bruce Jenner"? Or should he be called by another name? Can I refer to him as "he"?
You can do whatever you want.
You have just committed two severe violations of common decency, misgendering and deadnaming. Caitlyn Jenner is no less female than any woman on this planet. It doesn't matter that she originally got famous competing athletically against men, or that she has a Y chromosome. Take a science class sometime. Learn about what makes humans male or female (or neither). Hint: it has nothing to do with anatomy.
#TransWomenAreWomen
If Jenner did it much earlier, he could have helped the East Germans bring home the gold.
NEVER try to explain hormones to a winger.
Learn about what makes humans male or female (or neither). Hint: it has nothing to do with anatomy.
Now, who is the science denier???????
As I said directly above you
I'm not sure if you're a science denier, or have yet to take (and pass) high school biology.
HORMONES --- which is WHY you flunked biology in high school!
This reads as pure (and not that good) satire....please tell me this is bad satire. As a straight and earnest post, it's even worse.
S/he doesn't care. Call her 'Bruce', call her 'he'.
While she gets a lot of crap, she, unlike the transtrenders who demand they be called made up words, understands that she's done something strange and out there and accepts that it's NOT normal and that people, even people who like her, are going to have difficulties with it.
And, by so doing, by being understanding, she gains respect and approval--even from those who do not approve.
And the human race takes a step forward.
It's fine to call the Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner.
It is not ok to refer to the reality star, no matter what name you use.
You can refer to him however you want, but he ain't a woman until he has the operation. And it doesn't look like that's going to happen any time soon.
HORMONES
"Do you think that members of racial groups should be called by terms generally preferred by those groups"
"(like not knowing that it's preferable to say black people or people of color instead of African Americans or blacks)."
Show of hands, who has actually met a black person who insists on being called a "person of color" or would get mortally offended when called "African American"?
Here is one way I would define PC: smug white assholes overcompensating for their white guilt by lecturing everyone on how to talk about swaths of people they've never met
^ classic Midwestern racist.
This is why us coastal elites loathe your type.
I thought you hated us because we're all German and you're all Irish/Italian and scared/confused by the concept of a hard day's work
Our bars close at 4am, which is about the time you freaks are up tilling the fields and milking the cows.
By the way you forget another coastal ethnic group, the hardworking Jewish folk who control the media and all real estate in this country. Why am I not surprised?
Yes, the Germans are trying to forget about the Jews, but there you go reminding us again. Thanks so much.
What was in the drink?
My guess: his grandfather's semen.
If it denies Political Correctness on the right, then it's bullshit.
Politically Correct bullshit. (lol)
Left - Right = Zero.
exec 'sudo rm -rf /';
Mine make sense.
To adults
#fsck /dev/hihn
#rm -rf *hihn*
system 'DROP TABLE hihnswarm';
Thanks for confirming, with childish hissy fits and gibberish.
Adults know that Left - Right = Zero has been used by libertarians for 50 years, since we reject both. And why I said:
If it denies Political Correctness on the right, then it's bullshit.
Politically Correct bullshit. (lol)
We now return to mindless bellowing by precious snowflakes, triggered by my Politically Incorrect and principled libertarianism.
Stupid robot doesn't even know when I'm just trying to get it to delete itself.
I still can't understand why anyone ever wrote a robot for shitposting and sodomizing petite baby goats.
THAT IS NOT WHAT I MEANT WHEN I SAID I FUCK LITTLE KIDS!
LEFT / ZERO = TO INFINITY AND BEYOND! (That's from Toy Story. Little boys love Toy Story, and I love little boys. So tight, even with my microphallus.)
Kindergarten is out!
PROOF OF WHAT I SAID (SMIRK)
With tactics THAT stupid, who's the robot>
PC Right = PC Left
Precious snowflakes.
Go null route yourself, 'bot.
Ah, "discoverLIBERTY" WAS Hihn, after all.
You Gomers are really fucking psycho
And Hihn raises his moronic head once again.
I would prefer that Persons of Color refer to me as "Massah" or "Sir". Those who refuse to do so are being rude.
I prefer Cap'n. I certainly don't expect it but I'm apt to increase gratuities for service workers who address me as such.
You call the captain captain; you call the boss boss.
Captain, I wish you 'd stop being so good to me.
Is Sandusky, Ohio a white supremacist enclave?
It's a town that revolves around kiddie-rape.
Actually Sandusky has a large minority population for a small town in Ohio.
As an Italian, it pains me to watch non Italians eating pizza.
As a hillbilly, it pains me to see an Italian use Rockabilly as his screen name.
Pizza sounds good right now.
African-Americans is out?
Race is an undefinable word in itself. The differences only exist because of the geo-spatial isolation of groups for hundreds of generations in the past. As there is no longer any spot on the planet than cannot be reached within a day, such isolation is no longer an issue. In a few generations, race will cease to exist.
Fucking get over it. Everyone.
I am over it. I take people as they come, regardless. I favor an old statement by Sonny Barger: "Treat me nice, I'll treat you better. Treat me bad, I'll treat you worse." No color, no sex, no national origin, no nothing but the kind of person you are. I think Martin Luther King said something about that in 1963.
" In a few generations, race will cease to exist."
Wanna put some money on the Japanese ceasing to exist?
That's not a race, It's a nationality. Their race is Asian.
But I agree, Snarky Piggy must be high on something.
People of Color is preferable to African-American?!
What fresh hell is this?
People of Color is the absolute worst term to describe a group with any specificity, as it is actually so non-descriptive that it could mean virtually anyone; perhaps (perhaps!) the only people it doesn't describe are albinos.
That's the point?it's meant to lump together all people who are not considered "white", as if they all had something significant in common.
That was the very phrase I was going to harp on:
There's layers to the stupid involved in that.
First, "People of Color" is only preferable in effete liberal circles like academia and journalism workplaces. I work with elementary school kids of many different races with two organizations and with middle school kids at a predominantly black middle school. Precisely zero of those people would refer to themselves or others as "People of Color" outside of the extremely rare circumstance of speaking with a protest organizer or TV reporter who prompted the expression.
All of the black kids refer to themselves as black, when being polite. Most of the white elementary school kids will refer to black kids as "brown" when unprompted - later learning the "black" label. (they do this because they do not have the concept of race and think they are describing the actual color of human skin. They get confused by "white" when the topic comes up, since nobody is actually white)
Second funny aspect to this is the perpetually offended PC reworking of the terminology. Negro used to be the polite term. Then it was Black. Then Afro-American. Then Black again. Then African-American. Then they tried to push it back to black but met resistance. Then came "People of Color" which was not a self-identification movement but a DNC talking point to unite Latinos and African-Americans as commonly oppressed "people of color". As such it has not been widely embraced as a self identifier beyond college campus social justice discussions.
As evidence for the lack of support in the black community for this nonsense, I'll point you to the godfather of soul. And lest you think his views are antiquated, exactly how many hard-core rap artists are writing songs about the proud "people of color" label?
The point to that rant was that Robby is far too young to have any actual memory of what these terms are and where they come from. If he had bothered to ask his fellow travelers like "the Jacket" who were around at the time, they could have regaled him with stories of how the America of the 60's was lectured by folks from the NAACP and the Nation of Islam that "Black" was the appropriate word, and other terms were offensive. "I'm black and I'm proud!" is of this era.
Then Jesse Jackson and his cohort spent a chunk of the 70's lecturing the population that "Black" was offensive and "Afro-American" was the proper term.
But it is really hard to chant "Say it loud! I'm Afro-American and I'm proud!", so Jesse and friends went on tour to promote the term "black" as being the proper term for people of African ancestry with dark skin..
And then in the 80's Jesse et. al. came around to tell everyone that "African American" was the appropriate term, and all other terms were hereby deemed offensive.
It was when Jesse began wavering in his support for "African American" that most people checked out, whether they be black or white.
"People of color" may be the political term used by SJW types working for the DNC or CWP, but it is hardly descriptive of any race, being as it applies equally to Latinos, blacks and anyone else who isn't doing well.
Your life must be so hard.
Wait til they discover acknowledge their own PC, safe spaces and triggering. If ever.
The only actually white people I've seen is this albino man who lived in my town when I was growing up, and possibly the actress who played Harry Potter's friend Luna in some of the later movies. Okay, and sometimes Nicole Kidman, but not consistently. Apart from them, no one that I've ever seen is white.
What's the current PC term for Christian Taliban?
Inquisition has been used.
And Witchcraft Trials.
"What's the current PC term for Christian Taliban?"
I suggest "Nonexistent"
You lose.
"People of Color" is the term used to set non-whites against Whites.
Dem Dem Niggras. STRING THEM ALL UP. Fill EVERY tree in 'Murrica

Oh boy, I must be profoundly un-woke (somnambulant?) because my preferred Christmas song features the guy from the Pogues and Kirsty Macoll insulting each other with terms such as "cheap lousy faggot" and "old slut on junk" before she finally tells him "Merry Christmas my arse, I pray God it's our last."
I guess I'm a terrible, completely non-PC person.
I love that song.
"A great many people, I suspect, would not be able to offer any workable definition of political correctness"
Newspeak.
Any proper definition would have ti include the elements on both the left and right.
It being "cold outside" is an opportune environment in which to attempt to get someone into your pants. You have to take advantage of the circumstances. The song does not depict any rape. If the only permissible sex is that which requires no persuasion, there's your demographic problem right there.
Without drunken sex and sexual persuasion, male homosexuality would die out. No gay boy would ever lose his virginity.
WE NEED MOAR BIGOTS
A FEWER FUCKING FAGS
(/sarc)
Fuck off, Hihn!
Reason should sell Fuck Off Hihn tee shirts.
Retards get them free from Red Cross or Salvation Army.
Ask for the childish cyber-bully department.
Or conservatards.
I seriously doubt Tony Bennett had rape on his mind, or that Lady Gaga was submitting to any such thing.

Just listen to the lyrics. The female character in "It's Cold Outside" is making dismissive fun of the prudes who would disapprove of her spending the night with her boyfriend. She's going to conduct her personal life as she chooses and to hell with what anyone else thinks. It's a feminist song. Very progressive for the 1940s.
The first recording was the movie version in Neptune's Daughter which is still up on you tube. Halfway through the song it switches to Red Skelton and Betty Garrett who reverse the male-female role with her as the seductress, very advanced for the day.
It has been covered by everyone since and is an American classic. I am happy I that there has been pushback against this stupid SJW ban. It is not a date rape song at all. It is a duet and a cute funny romantic scene. The songwriter came up with it as a bit for he and his wife to perform at dinner parties as was expected of entertainers in those days.
I can't stand political correctness.
It is a large stick used to threaten and beat free speech.
Its proponents sell it as simply choosing one word over another more correct and polite choice.
But it is actually the concepts and complete narratives that it censors that make it a violation of free speech.
We already have an example of a narrative that if you contradict it with science and history you will be persecuted by law. That narrative has been used to support an oppressive regime that has committed terrorism and crimes against humanity stealing land and killing the inhabitants for 70 years. By simply talking about it, you are labeled racist, hater, liar etc and if you persist, you will be banished and jailed for hate speech.
That is just one example of political correctness that shows that it Goes much further than choosing a word that someone else likes better.
The right has been that way for centuries. But I doubt today's Christian Taliban has that much power. It has been slowly easing for decades, although Trump has reversed in the opposite direction.
What is the 70-year oppressive regime you mention?
This story is about political correctness, not Israel and its bullshit holocaust narrative.
"The right has been that way for centuries."
And you've just been triggered.
They've been doing it for thousands of years.
But if you think the Holocaust was bullshit, your own PC may be near-fatal.
I invite dialogue and open discussion of evidence.
Your "near-fatal" comment demonstrates your PC.
No, it means you're-a-crazy-ass-fucking-moron-who-drools-out-of even-both-ears-and-BELEEBS-the-holocaust never happened,
REALITY is not PC, Gomer.
If you say Hitler never existed, and all if humanity says your're bat-shit crazy ... that is NOT PC ... YOU ARE BAT-SHIT CRAZY.
Say "hi" to Alex Jones and Mark Levin.
Contrary to Soave's definition, Political Correctness is an attempt through social pressure, institutional rules and law where it can be done to make statements and and actions contrary to the current progressive ideology unthinkable, even if such statements are objectively true. It is far more comprehensive and insidious than a mere standard of polite behavior.
There used to be something called "polite" - there were things you just didn't say or do in mixed company. But then, there also used to be spaces to remove yourself from mixed company and talk unabashedly, openly, and frankly.
This wasn't something I was a fan of, because it promoted lies (to avoid offense) while forcing truths to go unsaid (the elephant in the room no one would talk about).
However, there is something pleasant about living in a world where people have good manners and consideration for others in daily life. And there should also be a modicum of grace for people who mess up in daily living (proper pronouns? Right race classification?)
But casually going through life with politeness should never prevent us from having open discussions in the right settings. Political blogs, forums for ideas, after dinner discussions, policy debates - these places are not for political correctness as it forces us to not talk frankly about ideas and policies, history, religion, etc.
What is so painfully ironic is the 90s pushed polite conversation out and fought for the right to be as offensive as one wanted - language, music, jokes, mockery. Now, those same people are rebuilding "polite" society in a completely different way after having smashed the old way to smithereens.
The old way had its flaws, but I prefer it to this new way of "polite" where all spaces are open to all and no one can ever speak offensive true things.
O'Brien told Winston Smith that the future was a boot, planted firmly on a face, crushing it, forever.
Political Correctness is that boot, telling you that this is for your own good
Social Justice is that same boot, applying more pressure and kicking the face occasionally because you're inconveniencing it by making it do this for your own good. Oppressor!
....The country could use a some good old fashioned "GEORGE CARLIN" right about now....
Or a Zucker-Abrams-Zucker and/or Mel Brooks production
"But here's one issue: The poll didn't rigorously define political correctness, and that could have influenced the result."
Since when do polls ever rigorously define political terms?
YEAH!
Fox is the absolute worst.
