Trump Seems More Skeptical of Elizabeth Warren's Ancestry Test Than of Saudi Innocence in Death of Jamal Khashoggi: Reason Roundup
Plus: HHS proposes new drug-ad disclosures.

"There's not enough money in the world for us to buy back our credibility on human rights," chastises Rubio. Authorities have admitted that maybe U.S.-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed while paying a visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, and have promised to put out a statement soon with more information about the death of a man routinely critical of his country's leadership and policies. To President Trump, this seems neither a cause for alarm nor a rethinking of America's close ties to Saudi leaders.
In interviews Monday, the president not only struck a nonchalant tone about the situation but helped prop up a preemptive defense, suggesting (despite all evidence pointing to the contrary) that Khashoggi's death had naught to do with Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other official leaders and had happened at the hands of "rogue" Saudi cops.
The response has drawn criticism even from generally Trump-friendly corners. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has said that if Trump won't do something about about the situation, Congress will. "There's not enough money in the world for us to buy back our credibility on human rights," Rubio told CBS.
What's so galling and chilling about the Trump WH and Saudi response to the Khashoggi murder is that it's all the normal Trump toolkit of lying and gaslighting and hand waving in an attempt to get away with literal murder.

Trump seemed more at ease yesterday discussing Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren's family history. The president has prolifically mocked Warren for laying claim to Native American ancestry, and even offered to pay $1 million to a charity of her choosing if she would take a DNA test to prove her heritage. She did, and the results suggest that she does have some Native American ancestry.
Asked whether he would make good on the charity donation promise, Trump initialy dismissed the idea that he had ever promised any such thing, despite there being ample video of him making such a claim as recently as July.
Trump on offering $1 million for Elizabeth Warren's DNA test: "I didn't say that." This is him saying that: pic.twitter.com/G2vRiQU0PA
— Tommy Christopher (@tommyxtopher) October 15, 2018
Later in the day, Trump changed his tune, insisting that he would indeed hold up his end of the deal—but only if he could swab Warren's cheeks himself. "I'll only do it if I can test her personally," Trump told ABC News. He added that "it will not be something I enjoy doing" (because everyone knows that instituting creepy conditions like this is less creepy if you're also defensive about possibly enjoying it!).
On Twitter Tuesday morning, Trump continued to lay into Warren, whom he likes to call "Pocahontas (the bad version)" lest there's any confusion that he's talking about the long-dead Native American woman that inspired a Disney movie.
Pocahontas (the bad version), sometimes referred to as Elizabeth Warren, is getting slammed. She took a bogus DNA test and it showed that she may be 1/1024, far less than the average American. Now Cherokee Nation denies her, "DNA test is useless." Even they don't want her. Phony!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 16, 2018
Warren didn't do herself any favors with this stunt either, however. For instance, a statement from the Cherokee Nation said her claims dishonor "legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven," and accused Warren of "undermining tribal interests."

TV drug ads about to get even worse? Television commercials for pharmaceuticals are already a comical mix of smiling, healthy people oblivious to the steady drone of voiceover narration about possible side effects and complications. Now, the required mumbo-jumbo in this ads may get even longer. On Monday, federal regulators announced a proposal to mandate that drug companies disclose during television ads whether the featured medication could cost more than $35 per month.
"Patients deserve to know … if the drug company has pushed their prices to abusive levels," said Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar. "And they deserve to know this every time they see a drug advertised to them on TV."
Nevermind that no other category of products are required to list prices at the point of advertisement, nor that there are myriad other ways consumers can find the cost of a medication and nobody pays much attention to the verbal "fine print" in these ads anyway—the Trump HHS is proving itself just as willing as Democratic predecessors to dabble in health care and pharmaceutical regulation that had only a symbolic effect for consumers while racheting up bureacratic hoops for businesses.

Midterm ad hall of shame...
Political slut shaming.
I vaguely suspect criticizing political ads is "ableist".
Hello.
He's literally Murder Inc. now.
Funny how in 2016 WaPo was going through great pains to explain why a DNA test wouldn't prove anything anyway, but today they're slobbering over the new undeniable "proof."
Sorry, Scott Brown: A DNA test can't tell us if Elizabeth Warren has Native American roots
Dang it I messed up the link. Google it

Damn that Backpage!
Thank you Kamala Harris!!! A job well done!
A judge has tossed Stormy Daniels' defamation lawsuit against President Trump.
...off to...
You were all thinking it.
Perverts.
ENB hardest hit!
Umm, didn't the judge go FAR beyond just "tossing" it?
She has to pay Trump's legal fees, if the reports are correct.
That would sound about right for a frivolous legal action.
Is this the first time a prostitute has paid a politician, instead of the other way around?
So much winning.
Trump wins a battle but does he lose the war? Trump conceded and the agreed judge the Stormy issue was "all politics" so that means the campaign finance laws apply which means Trump is on record undercutting his defense to the criminal charges.
"Judge agreed"
"All politics" means her motivation was to damage Trump politically. That doesn't make him paying her off a "campaign contribution"
There's a lawyer and likely others willing to testify who say otherwise.
Poor Lefties were really pinning their hopes to getting Trump in a deposition.
Keep reaching.
It doesn't look pathetic at all.
Not one, cringeworthy bit.
They can tesify all they want. No court has ever read such things as being a campaign expendature. If it were, then anything anyone does which might help them politically is one as well.
Ordinary Person|10.16.18 @ 10:15AM|#
"There's a lawyer and likely others willing to testify who say otherwise."
Does it take tiny hands to grasp straws that thin?
You lost, loser. Grow up.
No, that does not mean that campaign finance laws apply. It means that it was a political attack. Him paying it off can be for his marriage, his kids, his business reputation, AND simultaneously for his campaign. There is no precedent for this type of thing being considered a campaign expenditure.
But there is also no precedent for Trump. If we have to turn over everything to finally get him, then so be it.
That is right BUCS. We have to get rid of the electoral college, the Supreme Court, and change whatever law needs to be changed to stop Trump, because he is destroying our institutions!!
"...Him paying it off can be for his marriage, his kids, his business reputation, AND simultaneously for his campaign. There is no precedent for this type of thing being considered a campaign expenditure."
If someone were to bring a case based on that, do Pelosi's plastic-surgeon bills qualify as campaign expenses?
He might get...FINED? OMG. IMPEACH!!!
Edwards, officially, didnt violate campaign finance law. Good luck with this hope of yours.
Aren't aboloshing ICE, raising taxes, and socialized medicine all things the Democrats support? How is that ad not truthful? I guess telling the truth gets you put in the dreaded Hall of Shame.
Of course we in the progressive / libertarian alliance want to #AbolishICE. But the Republicans are so extreme and out of touch with the concerns of everyday Americans, they say that like it's a bad thing. They're in for a big surprise next month when Democrats win the House and Senate.
#BlueTsunami
Do you ever worry that using the Japanese word Tsunami, instead of the English equivalent is appropriative? I worry about that a lot.
"Equivalent" and "appropriate" are not English either.
I inflected "appropriate" in an awkward way. I think that counts as neologism.
The Japanese don't give a fuck what we appropriate from them. Being a culture of honor, they would realize how incredibly hypocritical that would be.
Yes, but I'm sure there are some white, American college students who are mad as hell.
Even better.

ENB's sole criteria for inclusion into her "Hall of Shame" appears to be "any campaign ad that makes the Democrats look really, really bad."
Former Trump adviser Carter Page is suing the Democratic National Committee over allegations that he had secret ties to Russia.
Hopefully for him he didn't actually have ties and then forgot about them.

when i'm president, i promise to create a department who's sole job is to make sure there is an open lawsuit created for every person-to-person combination AND every person-to-corporation. i'm tired of all this wasted time and energy starting lawsuits when they should just exist as a right of birth.
disclose during television ads whether the featured medication could cost more than $35 per month.
like the couple that can afford to place two bathtubs overlooking a cliff cares about $35
It's easy to just go into debt to afford it. Especially since right after they both just walk off the cliff, hand in hand.

On Twitter Tuesday morning, Trump continued to lay into Warren, whom he likes to call "Pocahontas (the bad version)" lest there's any confusion that he's talking about the long-dead Native American woman that inspired a Disney movie.
yeah, its unlikely the media would take a quote of his out of context to give the least charitable interpretation.
I thought the Disney movie was the bad version
SP- Indians laughing
Reason sorted of glossed over the Cherokee reaction:
"A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship," Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said in a statement. "Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person's ancestors were indigenous to North or South America.Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage."
When you've lost the Cherokee Nation, well...
I'm confused. I thought that ethnic and racial nationalism were bad things.
It's always okay when the left does it.
DNA testing is kryptonite to most of these Cherokee Pretendians since most of them have the same amount of European ancestry as Warren. They get the benefits of whiteness plus the benefits of programs designed for real Cherokees
What's so galling and chilling about the Trump WH and Saudi response to the Khashoggi murder is that it's all the normal Trump toolkit of lying and gaslighting and hand waving in an attempt to get away with literal murder.
i feel like i've been gaslit into thinking this is a word we've always used so frequently.
Me too. I guess it's been around for some time (reference to an old movie), but it seems like it really took off in the last year or two.
On Monday, federal regulators announced a proposal to mandate that drug companies disclose during television ads whether the featured medication could cost more than $35 per month.
Let me save everyone the trouble. It will now.

She did, and it showed that she does have some Native American ancestry.
ENB, stop lying. Elizabeth Warren's report lists South American and Mexican DNA. Zero evidence that she has any AmerIndian DNA.
You Lefty media types and your lies.
Trump should pay 1/1024 of that million.
#Microwatha
Johnny, at least the Dems are still ON BOARD with their one-drop rule.
That would be hilarious!
He should pay the donation to the Cherokee nation.
I just wonder how long it will be before the Left-o-sphere claims that Putin sabotaged the DNA test.
I'm sure there is at least one Democrat operative who is combing the web now to find any connection between the company who did the test and Trump/Putin/Kavanaugh.
Spare me all these journalists and pundits being outraged over Trump's fealty to Saudi Arabia. Fuck them all. They only give a shit because they killed somebody they tertiarily knew. They ignored everything when Obama was president. This is like #204 on the list of terrible things the Saudis have done. But Western journalists are so self-righteous and self-important that they think this was an attack on them. While they sit in their brownstones in Chelsea they claim brotherhood with journalists who literally risk their lives around the world, all while lecturing Americans about how important they are.
I say let other media types go investigate.
Let them report on how cheap life is around the World. Let them report than only the USA is a beacon of freedom loving people who try and protect Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
They wont. The Lefties know how dangerous the World can be. They created much of the danger via Socialist propaganda for authoritarians.
+100 When the Saudis were carpet bombing Yemen, the media didn't give a fuck. For them to know claim to care because one of their own was killed is a bit rich to say the least.
There has been so much missing or glossed over from this story. And the fucking reporters suddenly clutching there pearls over this when they can't even be so much as bothered to report on Yemen disgusts me.
A journalist and an islamist? What's not to like?
To President Trump, this seems neither a cause for alarm nor a rethinking of America's close ties to Saudi leaders. In interviews Monday, the president not only struck a nonchalant tone about the situation but helped prop up a preemptive defense, suggesting (despite all evidence pointing to the contrary) that Khashoggi's death had naught to do with Prince Mohammad bin Salman and other official leaders and had happened at the hands of "rogue" Saudi cops.
Would you have been more satisfied with pounding the table and threats of war? It seems to me they are keeping a tight lip on things until they have more info or that the know something we don't.
Sure, wreck the economy because a terrible regime killed a journalist.
But putting up tariffs on a country that has done THE EXACT SAME FUCKING THING REPEATEDLY FOR YEARS is just too much.
It does seem the Reason staff is caught up again promoting the conventional wisdom of the press guild, whose connection to any principle or common sense seems dubious.
It is odd how many far Lefties ENB likes to quote from Twitter.
She is getting low on Cosmo invites.
If you ever listen to The Fifth Column podcast, you realize that they all live in "that world."
Haha. Matt Welch is over there.
No one knows what happened. No one even knows for sure the guy is dead. Even if he is dead and he was killed at the Saudi Embassy, that doesn't necessarily mean the Saudi government writ large is responsible. The US can barely control its intelligence and law enforcement agencies. Places like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan often exercise nominal control at best. It is entirely possible that some rogue element of the Saudi intelligence or police forces got pissed off and whacked this guy by their own initiative.
Yeah, maybe we should hold off a little bit before we launch a jihad over the death of a guy who isn't even an American citizen. We should also note had this guy not been a journalist and been a business man or Imam or anything else, the US media wouldn't give a single fuck about this story.
What's ironic for me about this story is that I was on vacation last week and not really following the news, so I told myself I wouldn't opine on it until I knew what was going on. But as you say there is nobody who knows so I didn't actually miss anything, except some media caterwauling.
The two week news cycle shifted and they didnt have anything strong to shift to.
Elizabeth Warren NOT proving she was AmerIndian and some Saudi reporter walking into the Saudi embassy in Turkey.
All that is known is that he was last seen going into the Saudi Embassy and has not been seen since. Even if they did kill him, countries like China and Russia and Iran whack overseas disidents all of the time. This guy was not an American and his murder did not happen on American soil. So, how exactly can America claim any interest in this?
I suspect it's just a continuation of what's happened since Trump took office. The media has been frantically throwing everything at him they can find in the hopes of taking him down. Their impotent rage is multiplied by the upcoming midterms and hints the Blue Wave may just be a Blue Piss In The Wind.
If they could, they would happily stir up enough trouble to goad Trump into going to war and then call him a war monger and use the resulting anti war movement to defeat him. They are just depraved.
thats what I've been asking John. Does the left want to start another WW over a single death. Seems to me Trump is the cooler more thoughtful person here, for a change
Trump has been dealing with these idiot Lefties for almost 2 years.
You have to give credit to Trump to be so level headed and not give the lefties anything real to 'gotcha' him.
I am very surprised that one person can so clearly own the Lefty propaganda machine and their Lefty supporters the way Trump does.
On Twitter Tuesday morning, Trump continued to lay into Warren, whom he likes to call "Pocahontas (the bad version)" lest there's any confusion that he's talking about the long-dead Native American woman that inspired a Disney movie.
Like it or not, it likely plays in Peoria.
I cannot get over how great yesterday was for #TheResistance. Finally we got scientific proof that one of the main right-wing smears against Elizabeth Warren is completely false. She is Native American after all! Conservatives attack her because they know she'd be a formidable candidate in 2020, and it's completely backfired on them.

Warren didn't do herself any favors with this stunt either, however. For instance, a statement from the Cherokee Nation said her claims dishonor "legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven," and accused Warren of "undermining tribal interests."
If Warren ran, she would be the first 99.9% white women to get AmerIndians to vote against her.
Luckily for her, no one cares what the Indians do.
True. I did have to laugh how this backfired on Warren. She thought she could ride some victim class to the White House.
Turns out that 'victim' class of AmerIndians still got much fight left in them and replied immediately that Warren, the white woman, is a piece of shit who is trying to take advantage of AmerIndians ...again.
I watched this documentary a while back about women warriors in history. One of the segments was about this Apache princess who fought the US Army in Arizona.
Her grandfather, the chief, had made a deal with the government to withdraw from nearly all the land the tribe had occupied in exchange for keeping a small island, about a 10th of it, as their homeland. Just a few years later, the government found that small patch had some valuable minerals, whereupon they voided the treaty and forcibly moved the tribe to reservation further away. It was then that the princess led a band of warriors to fight. They were all slaughtered, of course. Rifles and bows and arrows aren't much against cannon and Hotchkiss guns.
Out of all the "oppressed" minorities, I have to say I have by far the most sympathy for AmerIndians. They have often been outright victims. To me, honoring a freely entered into treaty is a point of basic honor. You don't go back on your word and still deserve any respect or loyalty.
Fuck anyone who tries to profit on the backs of people who have truly been downtrodden, and still today face plenty of discrimination and unequal treatment.
Slaves from Africa were brought to the USA. After slavery was ended, they could have stayed, left for Africa or somewhere else, or died. The black people that stayed knew it was their country too.
There is not a black slave alive today in the USA, nor a child to a slave.
AmerIndians overall lost to the USA but have nowhere else to go. The tribes still have poor people because of government policy that was forced on them or caused after treaties were ignored. They can try and fit in, leave to somewhere not their ancestral home, die fighting or die.
As long as you conveniently ignore the extra 100 years of Black Codes and Jim Crow that ended in 1965

Inherited Trauma Shapes Your Health

Fascinating.
This is another reason libertarians should seriously consider supporting reparations for slavery.
#BlackLivesMatter
Picking Lamarck over Darwin would help the cause, too. Just saying.
The legacy of racism is real!
Did they test for the impact of the parents themselves upon the children? That seems likely to me as well, that having a parent who has some significant trauma from an event raises their kids in a different way as well.
Maybe they could test a parent who has one of these markers. If they are really affected by actual life experiences, which sounds somewhat reasonable to me, then they should be passed on genetically at birth. And so they should test the babies as soon as they're born rather than looking at statistical outcomes after the fact and trying to draw conclusion, which can be a bit fuzzy at best.
...or Mexican, Peruvian, etc. You know, all the same, right?
And it showed she likely had less native blood in her than a regular white person would have,
Well, call me special. I took it and I have no Native at all. Though, unfortunately, in half Neanderthal.
Did you have a statistician take your results and then add in Central Americans to see if you have some then?
I don't know. The other half they couldn't tell me about because they were all crying pretty dang hard.

Makes sense. Neanderthals had extremely developed foreskins.
I had more Neanderthal than most people. Homo Sapiens literally wiped out my ancestors through systematic genocide. Where are my reparations?
Talking about Warren is mocking the minority pretensions of a firmly establishment figure with terrible ideas.

When you make the claim, the burden of proof is on YOU. Simple stuff.
Kashoggi's death absolutely is "...neither a cause for alarm nor a [sic] rethinking of America's close ties to Saudi leaders." Or at least not beyond their last 50 years of human rights abuses. The killing of Kashoggi is just more of the same. NOT SOMETHING NEW.
And, we have other "allies" who have done far worse.
We can't put tariffs on China who we know have ZERO human rights violations and have never, ever killed a dissident.

But let's get all ruffled and riled up NOW because Trump.
The majority of the 9-11 hijackers were Saudis. Never once did the media care about that fact or call for any action to be taken against Saudi Arabia over it. But they whack one journalist and everything changes.
It's obscene.
It defies the claim they're informed and reasoned. That they keep healthy perspectives on their opinions.
It's incredible to hang your credibility on this story.
Journalists defending their tribe, and using their soapbox to do it. Pay no attention to all the other murders that happened anywhere else in the world. We must make some gesture of self flagellation!
The majority of the 9-11 hijackers were Saudis. Never once did the media care about that fact or call for any action to be taken against Saudi Arabia over it.
They referred to it all the time, John.
When trying to get people to not support the effort in Afghanistan. They went on and on about how most of the attackers were Saudis, how we should leave Afghanistan--and, later, Iraq, alone.
About Bush's ties to the Saudis and about how the Saudis were supposedly assisted in getting away after 9/11.
I expect our President to be OUR President, not the President of the world. I know that's a difficult concept for people to grasp. And yeah, he definately shouldn't criticize a potential 2020 political opponents. That's not fair, especially since she is just a woman. Stick with criticizing him on tariffs and subsidies and leave his wokeness out of it.
It's amazing how he's expected to be a neo-con interventionist now.
What a bunch of unprincipled assholes people are.
Some jerk off at WaPo was talking about the South Sudan, Myanmar and - if you can believe it - North Korea as examples of why Trump is a genocidal maniac.

Trump's base is the half-educated, can't-keep-up, superstitious, stale-thinking, bigoted parasite class, you deplorable rube. Trump supporters are the Alabama, West Virginia, and Mississippi of the American electorate -- a stain and drain on our nation.
And you lost to them. Doesn't look good for you in that light.
Lol.

Elizabeth Warren Disappointed After DNA Test Shows Zero Trace of Presidential Material
What material is that?
Linen? Cotton? Polyester?
Ask Bill Clinton
"She did, and the results suggest that she does have some Native American ancestry."
More hard-hitting journalism from ENB.
lol I mean come on, you can't seriously take that position and expect people to take you seriously.
She has less than average NA ancestry for a white person.
For Warren to have played this right, she should not have shared the results of the test and just gone on obfuscating the truth of her heritage, which she clearly has been dishonest about for years. Pow Wow Chow was probably her biggest fuck up.
Anyone taking the position that "she really does have Native American ancestry!" is being intellectually dishonest or is just so partisan they can't remember what reality feels like.
The best post I saw was "I have more Bourbon in my blood than Warren has Native American blood"
Why is everyone talking about this as if it matters?
"The president not only struck a nonchalant tone about the situation but helped prop up a preemptive defense, suggesting (despite all evidence pointing to the contrary) that Khashoggi's death had naught to do with Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other official leaders and had happened at the hands of "rogue" Saudi cops."
"Despite all evidence pointing to the contrary", okay. What evidence are you referring to? Are you talking about this "evidence"?
"But many current and former U.S. officials in Washington still have a hard time believing that what transpired within a Saudi consulate wouldn't have had the blessing of senior royals in Riyadh."
----Washington Post from link
There are so many weasel words in that, from "many . . . officials" to "senior royals in Riyadh", it's hard to know where to start.
Meanwhile, if you want a major change in U.S. policy towards Saudi Arabia, you should say so and you should say why. Whatever interests the U.S. is rightly or wrongly pursuing in that region, they're right or wrong regardless of whether our ally murdered Khashoggi. I know the mistreatment of bunnies with big sad eyes is supposed to change everything if you're a progressive, but we're libertarians for goodness' sake.
Trump Seems More Skeptical of Elizabeth Warren's Ancestry Test Than of Saudi Innocence in Death of Jamal Khashoggi:
Warren's ancestry is a known fact. It is not Indian by any known definition of the word. In contrast, no one knows what the hell happened to Khashoggi. So, it appears ENB is paying Trump a compliment here.
Someone reminded me yesterday that Warren's claim was that her parents had to elope because her grandparents didn't approve of her father or mother marrying a Native American.
The test results, at the very least, threw cold water on that story. If she's at most 1/64 Native American, how could one of her parents (at 1/32 ancestry) be so Native American as to elicit that kind of reaction?
Elizabeth Warren is full of shit.
The test don't show that she has any Indina in her. It shows she has 1/512ths or whatever Peruvian and South American, which might be Indian but is not American Indian even if it is. I can't believe she let Trump goad her into taking the test. Even the media can't lie enough to make this look good.
Also, it's probably a safe bet that the margin of error in those tests is higher than 1/512 (two-tenths of one percent), too.
Shouldn't it be easier (lower margin of error) to prove paternity from the present generation than to prove ethnicity from six to nine generations ago? Those paternity tests I see given on television aren't even 100%.
Also, this is hardly the first time Elizabeth Warren has played funny with the truth. She's a goddamn liar when she's talking about economics, etc., too.
She's a lying liar who lies about her lying.
Nobody should believe anything she says without independent corroboration.
She should have just made up a story about her mother's death, like Barry did.
Yes. You can take tests from two different companies and usually get two different results. You won't get totally results. If one says you are 80% from the British Isles, the other won't say you are 10% from there. But when you get down to the very small percentage points, they vary from test to test because it is at best an educated guess. I find it very unlikely that someone of entirely Northern European ancestry could have one six generations removed ancester from Peru. It is possible. Maybe some Peruvian somehow found himself in the US and passed as white and got married and became her ancester. It is, however, unlikely. The better explaination is that the result is just statistical noise.
bingo.
And arrogant to go with her full of shitness because the idiot is DOUBLING DOWN.
It is long known that her parents didn't elope. They went to the big town 5-10 away and got legally married, then came back home that night for a reception. Apparently it was cheaper to get married there.
Kind of like her claim of growing up on the ragged edge of the middle class in the 60's, with three cars...
I'm not sure how likely it is, but it is possible not to share any genes with a great-grandparent. And there are plenty of "official" Indians out there who look just as white as she does.
Maybe she's making up this family history. I wouldn't be too surprised. But I don't find it completely implausible. In any case, it's pretty far down the list of reasons I have to loathe Warren and I don't really care.

"Who knows if roundup really caused his cancer or not?"
It doesn't.
"It is a wild guess either way..."
It isn't.
I don't really have a dog in this fight... I have read that "the science" mostly supports it being (directly at least) pretty harmless to humans. Who knows about indirect stuff like what it does to our gut bacteria? I have relatives in the farming business, and they spray lots of all sorts of chemicals... And their health suffers. All I can say is, use this kind of stuff sparingly is wise, and use precautions. Don't swim in the stuff or drink it! Wash yourself and your clothes after messing with it!
Got any links to share that support it being harmless, the Round-up?
PS, 289 million does sound batshit-crazy-high to me! And the lawyers get a huge-huge chunk of it...

Commies > Muslims > LBGTQ > John.
The Fourth Estate consistently demands that the privileges of the Fourth Estate be honored. That's actually pretty natural and expected; the problem is when other people take them seriously.
The idea that it can never be in the best interests of the United States to consort with vicious dictators is foundational to neoconservative thought. It shouldn't be surprising to see those ideas ape the logic of the left. After all, they're called "neoconservatives" because they used to be Marxists. It also shouldn't be surprising coming from someone like Rubio, who still has dreams of running against and beating Trump, I'm sure. Any chink in the armor is a weakness to exploit.
The idea that it can never be in the best interests of the United States to consort with vicious dictators is foundational to neoconservative thought.
I guess since they were on the other side during the Cold War, they missed how the US kept communism out of large areas of the world by doing just that.
That's how we won the Cold War, but they'll typically say that's how we created Al Qaeda, that's how we created Saddam Hussein, etc.
There is something to the suggestion that oppression breeds revolt and there can't be freedom and peace so long as there are dictators. Libya was, in fact, an unintentional supplier of jihadis to Afghanistan and elsewhere because Qaddafi strangled the economy and the society so badly, it was practically impossible to live a prosperous successful life.
Still, forcibly remaking other people's societies is something so fraught with failure, only an ex-Marxist would want to do that--at the point of a gun. Meanwhile, Jean Kirkpatrick was right about dictators like Pinochet--in the end, Pinochet held a referendum on his own rule and lived by the results.
The idea that oppression is the cause of Islamic terrorism is probably the dumbest idea of the 21st Century. There is not a single correlation between oppression and terrorism. All of the most famous and deadly terrorists in the world came from the middle and upper classes and were part of the elites of their native countries. Where those countries oppressive? Sure, but they were no more oppressive than many other countries that didn't produce terrorists and to the extent they were oppressive, the terrorists were generally not victims of the opression and usually were beneficiaries of it.
The ironic thing about it is that the Neocons were all former Marxists and radical Islam is nothing but an Arabic spin on Marxism. It is a utopian ideology that offers people a chance to join a larger struggle to purify the world just like old Marxism did. You would have thought they would have seen that. But they didn't because they never really stopped being Marxists. They may have renounced Marxist policies but at heart they still embraced the crude materialism and thinking that economics is the root of all human motivation that came with their Marxism. Thus, they still can't understand what motivates radical Muslims.
I think we'll need to agree to disagree.
When I look at neo-Nazi skinheads, violent gangbangers, and Jihadis from all over the world fighting in Afghanistan, I see the same thing--guys of a certain age, who, for whatever reason, have failed to achieve prosperity and find a girl.
Sometimes those reasons are personal (a Blood threatened to fuck me up yesterday because I was standing to close to him, with a shithead attitude like that, I feel zero pity for whatever else contributed to his miserable life), but sometimes the reasons are broader than that. Violent clerics find plenty of recruits when young men see they have no future, so did the IRA, so do the cartels of Colombia and Mexico, so did the Sandinistas, . . .
I'd like to think the American people would become violent and overthrow an oppressive regime once our oppressors started hurting the economy and the society so bad, it drained life of its opportunities. Whatever else you think is a contributing factor, guys of a certain age become violent as hell when there aren't any opportunities or good women around--cross-culturally and throughout history. Dictators who can't generate enough opportunities for their young men need to become more vicious--because of that.
Oppression isn't the only factor, but it's a big one.
When I look at neo-Nazi skinheads, violent gangbangers, and Jihadis from all over the world fighting in Afghanistan, I see the same thing--guys of a certain age, who, for whatever reason, have failed to achieve prosperity and find a girl.
Prosperity and recognition are relative things. What they have failed to achieve is the prosperity and recognition they think they are entitled to have. That is not a disease of the oppressed. Truely oppressed people are just looking for a measure of security. They don't have time to worry about Utopia. People who are drawn to movements like Marxism and Islamism are people who are well off enough to feel entitled to a certain level of respect and prosperity and who are looking for some kind of larger cause that will give them the meaning and importance to their lives they crave. They don't come from mud huts. They come from the middle and upper middle class. They always have and always will.
Did you ever read the story about the kid who covered himself with gasoline and lit himself on fire in Tunisia, becoming the rallying cry for the revolution there?
"Tarek el-Tayeb Mohamed Bouazizi (Arabic: ???? ??????????; 29 March 1984 ? 4 January 2011) was a Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire on 17 December 2010, which became a catalyst for the Tunisian Revolution and the wider Arab Spring against autocratic regimes. His self-immolation was in response to the confiscation of his wares and the harassment and humiliation inflicted on him by a municipal official and her aides."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed_Bouazizi
Those are the kinds of conditions that made being a Jihadi seem heroic.
You ever read about Bin Ladin, Al Baghdadi, Lenin, Marx, Castro, Pol Pot, and pretty much every single revolutionary leader or terrorist in the last 200 years?
Yeah, they were leaders, some of them from elite families, who were able to recruit all sorts of violent support, which might not have even been possible were it not for all sorts of oppressive conditions. Che Guevara was from more or less an elite family.
Pointing out why a molested and abused kid grows up to be a serial killer isn't condoning or excusing serial killers, and pointing out why these movements attract so much support isn't condoning or excusing their murderous behavior either. There are reasons why large numbers of people turn to violence and shitty ideology, and being oppressed is consistently among them.
As far as I'm aware, Libya had one of the highest per capita GDPs, highest life expectancy, highest literacy rates, lowest rates of undernourishment in Africa under Qaddafi.
I'd like to see those statistics, but I'd also point out that comparing Libya to the rest of Africa (including Subsaharan Africa) is a mighty low bar.
I really tried to get you a good link, Ken, but you have to sort of piecemeal it together.
Their GDP per capita was 14k US in 2008. It was good by world standards
If you go to Google Public Data and look at World Bank or Human Development Statistics, you can find most of it.
https://www.google.com/publicdata/directory
It's typical of oil rich countries to have high GDP per capita ratios. That isn't necessarily indicative of that GDP filtering down to the average Joe. Libya was an authoritarian and corrupt mess under Qaddafi, and it isn't surprising that guys of a certain age turn to terrorism under those conditions.
In Colombia, they'd go work for FARC, the death squads, or the cartels.
I've seen breakdowns of countries where various Mujahideen arrived from, and Libya was one of those countries where they came from disproportionately. Al Qaeda started out as an organization devoted to keeping track of all of them--so they could receive mail, etc. from their relatives, as I understand. After the Soviet Union fell, they were able to parlay that Rolodex into an international organization.
One of the reasons African-Americans have disproportionately been associated with everything from music to sports and from narcotics distribution to street gangs is because entering the first group was so highly dependent on talent, nobody cared about your race, and the second group, likewise, in the black market, nobody cared about your race, either. I'd argue that there are all sorts of other things that help keep African-Americans down, in addition to the drug war, discrimination, welfare dependency, etc. Surely, when the economy is bad, and there are even fewer opportunities for young urban men to gain meaningful employment, the allure of street gangs and the narcotics trade is even stronger than it would be otherwise.
Authoritarians are no better at planning societies than communists are at planning economies, and there's a lot of overlap between those two things in a society where the economy is mostly dependent on a state oil company that the dictator treats like his personal piggy bank. Who would argue that when there are fewer opportunities to join respectable society, young men have no less incentive to engage in antisocial behavior? Who would argue that crony kleptocracy is good at creating opportunities for young men to join respectable society?
It's hard to argue with success, but the left and the necons still do. I suppose it's easier because there are few intellectuals out there who are willing to speak the truth (like Kirkpatrick did) and defend U.S. security interests--even when we sometimes need to cozy up with nasty people. But, yeah, that's one of the ways we won the Cold War, and if and when we defeat our terrorist enemies, it'll be using the same kind of strategy.
In the case of Saudi Arabia, even, the head guy they're going after over this murder even cut off the religious police from enforcing dress codes or anything else, let women drive for the first time, allowed movie theaters in Saudi Arabia for the first time, and now allows women to attend sporting events--for the first time. If Trump weren't so pragmatic in the same way that Reagan was, the neocons might give the Saudis credit for that, but noooOOOoooo.
Its odd that the same folks claiming our culture is not best constantly compare all countries they dislike to our culture.
I wouldn't put the necons in that camp. They believe American culture is best, to the point that they think it should be spread with a gun as the solution to the world's problems.
They might blame America first for not flexing its military muscle and solving the world's problems, but they're not hateful of America the way people on the left can be.
"Any chink in the armor is a weakness to exploit."
Racist
If the psychotic left-liberal Block Yomommatards are now proclaiming that the "one drop rule" is officially back in effect, then a lot of white teens applying to college are going to be able to provide the evidence that they're a member of one of the persecuted minority groups.
It was very common for people who were light skinned blacks or mullatos to pass as white in 19th Century America. There are a ton of people in this country who look and consider themselves to be entirely white but in fact have some percentage of black ancestry. There are even more people who have some small percentage of Indian or Hispanic ancestry. If the Progressives really do want to make it a rule that anyone who pays $80 to Ancestry.com for a DNA test and finds out they are any percent minority can claim to be one, they have just effectively ended identity politics and affirmative action in this country.
I think only Warren gets to benefit from such a broad use of the one-drop rule.
Anyway, why should college applicants have to do a DNA test? Harvard didn't require Warren to do so.
Incidentally, even during Jim Crow, when a white person having black ancestry was considered a scandal to be covered up, whites would still be willing to boast of some Indian ancestry. What was up with that?
Depends on where you were. Northeastern whites, where there were not any actual Indians left, would read their Washington Irving and boast of Indian ancestry. Out in the West where Indians actually still existed and the Indian wars were still in living memory, did not boast of it at all and having it was just as scandalous as having black ancestry. My half siblings are from Oklahoma. Their biological father's father was named George Washington and looked like an extra out of a Western Movie. He almost certainly wan an Indian. But that was something no one in their father's family was ever willing to admit. So my half siblings, despite being one quarter Indian are not considered to be so and have never gotten a single benefit available to Indians. There are a lot of people like them. That fact makes Warren's fake carreer particularly galling.
Interesting...in the 1920s the country elected a (Republican) Vice-President who was 3/8 Indian (and member of an Indian nation). At the time, they wouldn't have elected a 3/8 black person.
Indians were not in that many places in the country after the 19th Century. It is hard to keep prejudices going when one party has been exterminated or forcibly relocated somewhere else. So real prejudice against the Indians died out in most places. It remained in places like South Dakota, Oklahoma, Arizona and New Mexico where the few remaining full Indians actually lived.
The other thing to remember is that there was a cultural element to the conflict between the whites and the Indians that wasn't there in the black white conflict. You could as an Indian alway give up your Indian ways and join white society and be accepted in a way that a black person never could be.
Apparently, an assimilated Indian didn't trigger racist caste alerts...there's probably a reason that the term "leaving the reservation" had so much resonance.
Meanwhile, one would think believers in affirmative action would focus on disadvantaged people on the Indian reservations...understandably not the best places to live since it's land white people didn't think worth grabbing...scholarships and grants for reservation youth ought to claim their attention...
It seems that no later than a year after her tenure grant she was officially cited as Native American, this in response to criticisms about the small number of minority women on the faculty. (Student activists at the time of her appointment seem to have dismissed her as white; how the tenure committee viewed her I don't know).
But it certainly illustrates some of the silliness about racial preferences...you're white one year and a year later you're Native American based on oral traditions which the DNA doesn't fully support (though they didn't ask for DNA tests at the time of course).
I wonder if we're going to do like the old South African regime and "scientifically" classify people by race to make sure they're truly qualified for race-based preferences. With DNA testing available for a small fee, people might no longer get away with claiming "an old family tradition" to get the benefit of a racial preference.
And what percentage is the cut-off - we're going to really have to streeeeeetch that one-drop rule to classify folks like Warren as "minorities."
Someone could grow up considering themselves white and being treated by everyone as white and then on their 16th birthday take one of these tests and fine out they are 1/4 Indian or Hispanic, and viola, they are an oppressed minority and eligible for all the preferences in college aid and amdissions. How could they be denied?
If Chief Warren has successfully exposed the idiocy of racial preferences and brings an end to affirmative action and identity politics, then she truly is a hero. She will go down in history with other such greats as Squanto, Sitting Bull, and the guy in the anti-littering commercial.
The guy in the litering commercial was an Italian American actor. I always loved that.

I say we just chill for now. If the Iranians don't whack anybody in their embassies in the next year, we let 'em slide on this one.
Goddammit. *Saudis
The Iranians were caught plotting to assasinate a Saudi diplomat by bombing a Washington DC restaurant. Never once did the media say anything about the Obama administration's complete refusal to do anything about the Iranian government planning a terrorist attack on US soil. But the Saudis murder a Saudi citizen at their embassy in Turkey and it is an act of war that cannot go unanswered.
It is really stunning how the media seems to have no idea how ridiculous they look.
What is the libertarian position on the US prosecuting murder charges for a crime against a Saudi while in Turkey?
Is it possible that this man knowingly went to his death in order to avoid getting married?
These are two unrelated questions, right?
1. Don't care.
2. I want to believe this theory.

Can't have them as a literal honorary school mascot to remember their bravery and spirit, but if you distill the sum of their contributions to the modern world into a Disney movie, that's cool.
"Long-dead" seems to be a convenient way to avoid the hassle of googling what century she lived.

Because credibility Ron. Anytime people start claiming that we must do something for our "credibility", they are pretty much admitting that they have no real case for doing anything and are making one by pretending larger issues are somehow at stake, which is nearly always complete bullshit.

I really feel that if people can't be bothered to vote, then it's okay if they don't vote. Let's have less people who give no shits voting.
yes.
Problem is, the kind of people who are torn between voting or staying home...seem to be Democrats. Or at least this is what Democrat officials themselves think based on their behavior.
In 2012, the Obama campaign sent out creepy shaming letters to Democrats who hadn't been voting lately - "look at these neighborhood maps where you didn't vote but your neighbors did!"
If my old party sent such letters it might prompt me to get out and vote...*against* the party sending the letters!
But Obama's tactic seemed to work.
On a less creepy note, Democratic leaders seem to be seeking to make voting even easier than it was, in hopes that their disengaged voters would be able to vote with as little effort as possible.

Now that her claims of being of Indian heritage have turned out to be a scam and a lie, Elizabeth Warren should apologize for perpetrating this fraud against the American Public. Harvard called her "a person of color" (amazing con), and would not have taken her otherwise!
This one's damn funny as well:

So it's a contest between liars, fraudsters, and people of the wrong color?
Warren is white Tony. She is 99.5% white. Its okay to be white. Didn't you know that?
You people are so mentally fucked that you actually think this is a real issue, don't you? Like, there's climate change, increasing tensions with all the major global powers, criminal justice, economic inequality... but what matters to you is a) work emails sent on a private account and b) Elizabeth Warren's DNA.
And it doesn't matter whether you're just that stupid or if you know it's all a cynical game played for power for people who treat you like morons (and Trump really, really thinks you're a moron--he's admitted it, Jared's said so--he thinks you're stupid and that's why he does the birtherism shit and all the other shit). Because it hurts the world just the same. How do you people sleep at night? It must be the stupidity.
Yeah Tony, there are so many important issues out there you care so deeply about. Tell us more about how Trump tweeted something mean about the media or said Robert E. Lee was a great general.
It is not so much that you are stupid, and make no mistake you are a remarkably stupid person, it is that you think everyone else is just as dumb as you are that really stands out.
I prefer presidents who don't call women "horseface," but that's the lowest bar, and that's the point.
Tony, some of us prefer our Presidents not to hang out with Terrorist either like Ayers. Or you know to force a women in the Oval Office.
But hey, I know name calling is the worst thing possible to you.
Trump is taking sides with the ruling regimes of Russia, Saudi Arabia, and fucking North Korea over his own intelligence services. Fuck you, moron.
Some of us like to have a little fun once in a while, amid all the seriousness. And watching people like you whitesplaining what it really means to be a Native American is goddamn funny.
Yet the Trumptard movement is teetering on the edge between funny and scary what with its complete ignorance of all impulses except racism.
No you retard. The issue is Warren claimed to be a victim her whole life. She faked minority status for everything. She made up stories, she used it in publications.
It shows she thinks you are a moron.
She tells people "You didn't build that." Yet, she has never build/done anything but use a victim status.
"It shows she thinks you are a moron."
Well, it's kinda hard to miss on that one.
Now do Trump. Tell me what a self-made billionaire he is who never ever whines about what a victim he is.

See? Even Tony thinks he's a moron, and he's here to prove it!
>>>Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has said that if Trump won't do something about about the situation, Congress will.
CONGRESS! El Pequeno Marco.

why is Chris Hayes a thing?
MSNBC needed to fill another hour of programming, so they got Maddow to comb her hair to the side, put on glasses, and go by Chris.
the Chris version of Rachel is stupid. "Literally".
Beta cucks need their hour of political news too.
When you are Rachel Maddow's transgendered lover, you get a few perks.
Trump cares about what FOX News tells him to care about. That's your president, idiots. How traitorous would he have to be before you stopped slobbering over his toadstool? Ballpark?
No now Chris Hayes is accusing Trump of the murder? Because that's how it reads. Shoddy.
wish someone in the T admin would have told T the joke is FAUXcahontas ... he slanders Pocahontas by getting it wrong
I'm more skeptical that this author isn't just a far left shrill.
Hear Beto's turned all in for property rights..."its my cash and ya'll not gettin' any"
Won't make any difference, Beto "the gun-grabbing Beta male" is toast in November.
So, I'm reading about this Khashoggi fellow, trying to find out what's going on and I come across a bit that says he was a friend of Bin Laden.
And I'm thinking surely not, it HAS to be some othe---nope. He was friends with Osama Bin Laden.
And lookitthat, his uncle is a big time arms dealer.
Huh.
Funny how none of that's in the headlines.
And why is the US being held as culpable for the Saudis killing a Saudi? Oh, don't get me wrong--it's a horrible situation--but a stain on the US? Not at all.
...and I know why, actually.
The Saudis kill Saudis all the time--with and without film--particularly dissidents. Most come and go without us ever noticing.
But this guy was a journalist--for the Washington Post no less. And that makes him more important than anyone..
Obviously that's the fact of the matter here. I made the point yesterday that most of these outlets have hardly ever mentioned that Saudi Arabia has been using American arms to starve the people of Yemen for the past few years. In fact, neither has ENB with her newfound faux outrage. What is clearly being pushed here is that the life of a reporter should be valued more highly than those of the poor people of Yemen.
Rand Paul's numerous attempts to try and stop American arm sales to Saudi Arabia were roundly ignored by the same media that is so scandalized now.
Here is an article from 2012 that you could probably use to argue either side of the Warren nonsense.
http://www.bostonherald.com/ne.....amily_tree
"Although the conventional wisdom among students and faculty is that the Law School faculty includes no minority women, Chmura said professor of law Elizabeth Warren is Native American," the Crimson wrote.
The Warren campaign said the candidate never authorized Harvard Law to claim her as a minority hire.
Christopher Child, a genealogist at the New England Historic and Genealogical Society, traced back Warren's family to her great-grandfather on her mother's side and couldn't find any proof of Native American heritage.
"In her immediate pedigree there is no one who is listing themselves as not white," said Child, who has researched the heritage of several prominent politicians.
He added that finding Native American lineage is not always easy: "Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama claim to have Native American heritage, but we were never able to find evidence of that, and in both cases we traced their ancestry fairly thoroughly."
---
But it isn't surprising if native americans chose to pass themselves off as "white."
She self-identified as Native American on several occasions, including in a cookbook called Pow Wow Chow which she contributed to. She actually insisted that the University of PA change her racial category from "white" to "Native American" while she was a professor there.
She plagerized the recipe she contributed from a NYT's article.
And it's literally the worst scandal since work emails on a private account. Nothing scandalous has happened since. Certainly not with her future opponent. Nope, this is it. This is what 2020 is about. Don't you wish.

"And it's literally the worst scandal since work emails on a private account."
You never get tired of making an ass of yourself, shitbag.
"The Warren campaign said the candidate never authorized Harvard Law to claim her as a minority hire."
So where did this "meme" originate from?
Did some member of the law faculty take a look at Warren's "high cheekbones" and think "native American"?
In response to criticism they apparently sent around a survey of faculty, to which Warren responded that she is NA.
And Harvard Law Faculty "bought" it...of course they did...a very convenient fiction for both parties.
Turns out Tiny Fingers has a Tiny Dick, too.
No wonder Melania doesn't care.
Still a hero to disaffected white incels, though!
Ever the bitter clinger you are...

"Turns out Tiny Fingers has a Tiny Dick, too."
Your jealousy is amusing, asshole.
Figures Reason's feminist would repeat the progressive lie about the bet. He said during a debate he would give her a DNA test and if it proved she was native American he would donate the money.
