Despite Nixon's Loss to Cuomo, It Was a Good Night for Democratic Socialists in New York: Reason Roundup
Plus: Hurricane Florence hits.

Actress Cynthia Nixon came up short in her primary challenge to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who won 65 percent of the vote to Nixon's 35 percent.
But elsewhere in New York, it was a good night for insurgent progressive challengers to mainstream Democrats. Most notably, 27-year-old democratic socialist Julia Salazar defeated incumbent state Sen. Martin Dilan, despite the negative media attention she received after inaccurately claiming to have come from a working-class background. And 32-year-old Alessandra Biaggi defeated incumbent state Sen. Jeff Klein, who was viewed as a traitor for breaking with Democrats and temporarily handing Republicans a majority in the state Senate. (Biaggi does not identify as a socialist, but she is still well to the left of the Democratic mainstream.)
Vox's Matt Yglesias thinks a big loser in all this is…Andrew Cuomo. The governor bent over backward to avoid being viewed as too far left, in hopes of eventually running for president. Unfortunately, that's no longer such a good strategy:
It was a subtle, well-executed game—subtle enough to not be understood by most voters in New York's Democratic primaries—but in retrospect, it was too clever by half. The mood among national Democrats has swung substantially to the left over the past five years, with Barack Obama recently endorsing ideas like Medicare-for-all and employee representation on corporate boards.
Had Cuomo simply done the normal thing and supported Democratic state Senate candidates and gotten the chance he feared to sign ambitious progressive bills, he'd be perfectly positioned for the circumstances of 2020. Instead, as it stands, he's left relying on a powerful state party machine and the loyalty of less attentive voters to secure what should have been a total cakewalk of a renomination.
The successes of Salazar and Biaggi, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez before them, show that the progressive wing is ascendant. Now would be a good time for nonsocialists to start figuring out what makes them tick.

Plymouth State University (PSU) retalliated against two professors who dared to defend a woman against charges that she had sexually assaulted a teenager. One of the professors, Nancy Strapko, served as a paid expert witness for the defendant. The other, Michael Fischler, sent a letter to the court asking for leniency. The case brought significant media attention, and PSU declined to rehire Strapko. Administrators also forced Fischler to undergo Title IX training.
This is a First Amendment violation, says the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education:
By imposing penalties on these professors, PSU runs afoul of the First Amendment and its own academic freedom policies. Although adjunct professors are without the benefits of tenure, public universities may not refuse to rehire them over protected expression, as such an act is retaliatory in nature and violates their First Amendment rights.
Furthermore, state university professors generally may not be punished for their speech as private citizens, so long as the expression consists of matters of public concern and does not disrupt the educational environment. Both Fischler and Strapko were speaking as private citizens because they were not employed by PSU for purposes of providing analysis to the trial court judge, and a reasonable recipient of their communications would not believe they were made on behalf the university, especially one that explicitly disavowed the opinions of these professors in this matter.

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein tells Fox News that his office has received "more than 200 complaints of price-gouging" as Hurricane Florence draws closer. Most concerned fuel and water:
"What we do is we then call the business to 1. inform them of the law, and 2. find out what there story is," Stein said. "The law in North Carolina protects against a business charging an unreasonably excessive price."
"Price gouging's illegal because no business should take advantage of people's desperation. When people are at their lowest, that's when we should be reaching out – to help folks, not take advantage," Stein continued.
"Price-gouging" is illegal, but it really shouldn't be, as John Stossel explains in a recent video for Reason.

X from the city.
You got Xed punk!
"Meanwhile, in uptown, Miranda was getting stomped in an election against the least likable incumbent in the country"
Hello.
What makes them tick? The idea of controlling and murdering millions?
Once again, these illiterates let the 'romantic' notion of socialism prevail over how it's actually practiced.
There's really no excuse to support or vote for them having seen what we've read about these buffoons.
And they say Trump is ignorant? Dude is Goethe and Dante combined next to those parasitical ignoramuses.
It annoys me when Democrats flirt with the socialist label, but man does it turn your brains off. Do you think they're romanticizing Stalinism? You think that's what they're doing? Or might they be pushing left-of-center policies as can be found across the civilized (non-genociding) world?
I know that all socialism leads to, at best, increased unemployment and, at worst, bread lines and gulags. Pretty sure that's not in dispute
That's why it annoys Tony.
People hear Socialist concentration camps like in Nazi Germany and they get turned off to voting for their own murders.
So you're just completely unable to comprehend what I posted.
No, I got it. I don't buy into the conservative inclination of Reason to try and understand collectivists just because they are popular. Socialism is a disease and that's about it. They're no better than fascists, because they both put the collective over the individual
Everyone's a collectivist. You just want to force us all into the misery of forced individualism. There's a reason people have chosen socialism but have never chosen that.
LOL
Keep pushing him Just Say'n, more psychopathic Lefty narratives will pop out of Tony.
Tony|9.14.18 @ 10:14AM|#
"Everyone's a collectivist. You just want to force us all into the misery of forced individualism."
You're a laugh riot, shitbag.
Tony, spin harder.
Lol.
There's a reason people have chosen socialism but have never chosen that.
Yes it's usually because of the gun pointed in their direction.
You just want to force us all into the misery of forced individualism.
I tried to respond to this.... I really tried.
Why is it so hard for you people to understand that a society set up how you claim to want it would have actual effects on human beings that many of them would not like? Are you that in love with yourselves? Any asshole can promise utopia. I would hope we were above that.
Socialism never works Tony. The plan Democrats and Progressives had for America is not working and is being rejected.
You Lefties are so in love with yourselves and think you are smarter than everyone else. You're not
Libertarianism never works either, to such an extent that it's never been tried.
But of course that's the entire point, right? If you actually forced people into it, they'd dump it the next day.
If you actually forced people into it, they'd dump it the next day.
That's the difference between libertarians and socialists; we don't believe in forcing people into it.
You hope they'll wander onto your little message boards and eventually decide in democratically legitimate numbers to enact it for themselves?
Actually, some people have ideals about how society should work that are independent of anything they may do to actually bring that about in the world, most of which are statistically impossible to affect the outcomes in any way.
For example: consider your own internet presence.
Tony: individualism can simulate socialism with contracts; all anybody has to do is sign up with some organization and turn over their property and income, in return for getting whatever the organization deems correct. There can be many such organizations with different formulas for redistribution, going all the way to them deciding where you work. The only hard part would be deciding which one controls your life.
Socialism cannot tolerate individualism.
That alone ought to prove that individualism is superior and not a hardship for those who don't want choices.
The USA is a Libertarian country. Or fundamentally it is. The US Constitution is a template for Libertarian principles. Classical Liberals and Libertarians are not very different. Slavery was the main difference, as Libertarians would never agree to slavery. Classical Liberals did to form the USA but wanted to readdress the issue in less than 20 years.
The USA is free-ish, so it takes a beating from Lefties trying to destroy it. Lefties have a right to vote and say what they want too. Trump was elected as a rejection of the Socialism of the USA.

"I don't consider taxing and redistribution to be either forced or charity."
Why is it so hard for you to understand that society set up how you claim to want it has murdered a hundred million people, easy?
Any asshole can promise utopia - you certainly aren't above that.
Sure, as long as we define "individualism" as "Somalia" and "socialism" as "everything else."
Speaking of "Somalia", if we want to talk about ridiculous strawmen...
"Any asshole can promise utopia."
Usually it is called Medicare for All, Free Education, Hope and Change, Guaranteed Income, Enhanced Safety Net, etc. And, yes, it is always assholes promising it.
Promising 'blood sweat and tears' individualism is not as attractive to the ignorant masses, but it works best.
No one is forcing you to be an individual, Tony. You're perfectly free to subsume your personality and moral agency into the collective. We only demand that you allow us the same freedom to choose our own path.
But I guess its too individualistic to *allow* people to choose to be drones in the hive. Better to force them into it.
And, frankly, there's no escaping misery - but there's been a hell of a massive reduction in human misery through following 'individualistic' policies than there has been in any nation that's seriously put the collective first.
Please stop insulting everyone's intelligence by avoiding the issue. You would have a certain tax structure, a policy with respect to a social safety net, and a thousand other things touched by public policy. It would be a regime as intrusive in everyone's lives as any other, except it would suck more than most.
Tiny and limited public policy. Strictly based on the Constitution.
In fact, you can get an example of what Libertarians would want the US gov to be in size comparable to say state government in a medium to small state like Utah or Ohio.
Of course if this happened, Texas, Georgia, NY, California could eliminate thousands of state employees because they would not have to cater to ridiculous and excessive federal regulations.
"Tony|9.14.18 @ 12:51PM|#
Please stop insulting everyone's intelligence by avoiding the issue"
You first.
"You would have a certain tax structure, a policy with respect to a social safety net, and a thousand other things touched by public policy. It would be a regime as intrusive in everyone's lives as any other, except it would suck more than most."
No Tomy, none of this is accurate. How is it you get told things for decades, but are still too stupid to understand them? Itist be that you think we are lying, because you are, and that's what you expect from this kind of dialogue.
Yes there is - true freedom requires individuals to fend for themselves and most people seem more comfortable being told what to do as opposed to deciding for themselves; especially if they are promised all kinds of utopian free stuff for their compliance.
Catholicism's dogmatic belief that Fathers, Bishops, etc, are fully in charge and their desires must be respected above other concerns (not as true in most of the US). Many Muslim sects are the same.
Of course they are promising to save you from hell and compliance gains you after-death access to their utopian version.
But my point here it seems obvious that evolution has provided humans with things like group think and given how most people choose to associate and give up their most important decisions to others (Bishop to parents: we don't need to call the cops, we'll take care of. Really religious parents say OK and fully believe it will be rectified).
As deciding for oneself puts the responsibility for the end results on only one person and we're not setup for that.
So, it's difficult, if not impossible for many, to be able to contemplate libertarianism closely enough to objectively evaluate it.
IE - the idea is so far removed from their daily actions, they dismiss the idea outright without fully understanding.
As denial is much easier than questioning one's strongly held long term beliefs/worldview.
Why do you write "at worst, bread lines and gulags"?
Bread lines are indicators of just how well socialism is working. Gulags are progressive institutions that have the express purpose of educating people in socialism.
Bread lines and gulags are some of the most wonderful aspects of socialism. Under socialism, the formerly rich must line up with the poor for their daily rations. Obviously, a compassionate socialist society must provide education services for any malcontent would pathologically object to the wondrous, brave new world. The gulag is the perfect institution for that purpose.
Remember that NYT writer who romanticized Stalin in the 1930s and after?
Remember Sean Penn romanticizing Hugo Chavez?
Remember all those dildoes romanticizing Fidel Castro for years and years, and lamenting that the end of the US embargo would mean progress for Cubanos in the form of modern cars and McDonalds?
Yeah, Tony, I do.
The left have a history of romanticizing murders, dictators, tyrants, fascists, and Nazis.
That's why listening to Obama call Trump a demagogue is soooo rich.
Projection. That's all it is.
Narcissistic demagogue Obama.
Want me to list some kooks on the right who aren't in any political office? I can do that if you think that's the exercise we're engaging in.
Want me to remind you of what you said?
I can find some random person who romanticizes Hitler. Probably a number of Trump supporters. Is that what we're doing? Because the point is, obviously, that Democrats who flirt with the "socialist" label don't mean that, and if you don't know that you're an idiot.
Want me to remind you yet again what you said?
And the answer is, no, Cynthia Nixon is not.
Well, we're not romanticizing Somalia, but I don't see you refraining from being a mendacious fag.
Hey now, stop moving those goalposts back. That's just not fair.
Bernie Sanders is 'some random person'?
Sean Penn is some random person? Michael Moore? Random people you were all hot to try to rub in our faces a couple years ago.
Want me to list some kooks on the right who aren't in any political office?
I can list plenty of kooks on the left who are the same. The Antifa-tards come to mind.
More importantly, we can list numerous kooks on the left who are in office or running for office who romanticize Stalinism/socialism/communism (see the story above for a few). It's not just the lefty fringe anymore, it' Donkey mainstream.
The NYT last year had a Nostalgia for Communism series marking the 100th Anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution.
They romanticize it all the time.
We just need the right people to seize the means! We're talking real top Xen!
Yeah, Tony, I do.
This is why normal people get a laugh from some of the comments here.
You really think Cynthia Nixon and Bernie Sanders are just Joseph Stalin clones waiting in the wings?
This is just transparently trying to demonize political opponents as being far worse than they really are, using fear to inspire the tribe to oppose them.
It really is no different than when Democrats claim that "Republicans want children to starve and grandmas to drink dirty water" when they motivate their base to come out to vote against Republicans.
Who knows what extremes the Socialists want to work toward.
The point is that even under our US and state Constitutions, the Socialists still ban straws. They still want people to be forced to do things. They still want dissidents silenced.
Its not hyperbole when Socialists have put people in Gulags before.
This^
Does Tony think that Stalin was just the biggest asshole in the history of the planet and that is why 60 million people died?
No, it was the promises that Stalin made of guaranteed employment and prosperity for all if they just trusted in the government that sucked in all those people.
Bernie and Nixon's proposed programs only succeed by draining the productivity of intelligent hard working people into the state coffers for redistribution. Intelligent people dont work hard for very long when there is a clear disincentive to produce 'according to their ability'. Productivity plummets, poverty becomes rampant and people get liquidated in an effort to enforce compliance.
This has been the pattern for the last 120 years, without exception.
Every socialist will become Stalin, Castro, Chavez given enough time.
"You really think Cynthia Nixon and Bernie Sanders are just Joseph Stalin clones waiting in the wings?"
You think the process that ended up with Stalin... BEGAN with Stalin? No clown, it begins with Nixons and chemjeffs and Tonys.
It also helps to be Imperial Russia at the turn of the century with a retarded Czar.
🙂
What I'm saying is the look at the 'good intentions'. They look at 'what ought to be'. They look at all the promise socialism can bring. Yet, those good intentions are a path to hell. The 'ought to be' is nothing but a calculation in social engineering to eradicate 'what is'. They promise of all good and free things, is paid for through coercion by way of robbing from the productive and giving it to the parasite class and eventually the rulers of this scam take it all anyway as they plunder and pillage through a nation's human and natural resources.
It all ends up, well, do we really need to rehash this?
Human nature is flawed; we are all sinners. Socialism (any collectivist system) does not check those faults, it allows them to flourish and exploit/murder their brethren. Capitalism with divided power in govt is the only system that checks the bad intentions and actions of some with the power and actions of others.
I would say that the people I know personally who desire socialism aren't romanticizing Stalin or any other Communist hellhole, but I think they're naive because they don't see it as a real risk. Implementing socialist policies means giving more power to politicians; it's childish to believe that those politicians will only use those powers for good.
Absolutely and given we have cops running prostitution rings and shooting innocent people/dogs etc, why would anyone think it less corrupt the higher upmit goes?
And note, cops don't enjoy anywhere near the power that politicians do, yet they still feel very free in todays society to abuse their authority for any reason at all (or no reason at all).
And your core belief is these people need greater power, including the power to define what rights are to be enjoyed. As you've said before - rights only exist due to the state, right?
But these people are openly corrupt now! But more power to...fix that?
Seriously, you're the walking picture of Einstein's insanity defintion: doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result.
We live in a corrupt police state and your desire is to give them more power and more resources.
Good luck with that, but don't be so angry at those that know this is a bad idea.
""We live in a corrupt police state and your desire is to give them more power and more resources.""
The police are the enforcement arm of the state. It do find it funny, well sad really, that people who want to expand the state fail to understand they are expanding the authority which use the police as their enforcers.
They complain about how people of color are being mistreated by the state, yet what to expand the authority of those who are doing the mistreating.
'Do you think they're romanticizing Stalinism?'
Well, it appears that some are. There was an article at Spiked-online yesterday titled "Why students *heart* Stalin", talking about the LGBTQ+ Society at Goldsmiths, University of London who were serious in bringing back gulags and re-education camps.
Do I think they're romanticizing Stalinism? Yes. About half of them are. 'If only I had the power . . . '
The other half are trying to memory hole people like him, Pol Pot, Mao, etc - 'because it'll be totes different this time!'
Are you so insecure in your own beliefs that you have to ascribe ridiculously exaggerated motivations to others'?
That's a weird non-sequitur you've posted there.
That's what he does best.
Tony as a Jar Jar Binks:
"Wesa need give Clinton the chancellorship. Shesa the only one who can bring peace to the galaxy."
Tony as General Hux:
"What do you mean the Supreme Leader has lost the election? Can't these scum see that she is only trying to make there miserable lives easier?" (laser blasts)
Here you go Tony, some Democratic allies romanticizing Stalin. And no, not in the 1940's, doing it today.

Bread lines are a good thing.
/Bernie Sanders, hero and leader of the Dem Socialist movement, runner up in the Team Blue 2016 presidential nomination process in spite of rigging by HRC and the DNC.
Gosh, wonder why we'd be concerned?
Bernie in 2011: "These days, the American dream is more apt to be realized in South America, in places such as Ecuador, Venezuela, and Argentina, where incomes are actually more equal today than they are in the land of Horatio Alger. Who's the banana republic now?"
Murdering millions is one thing. I sometimes remind peoplepeople that they're going to have to kill me. Do they not understand that when they stump for socialism straight to my face like they're talking about the weather? I don't think they expect me to stand by idly while they expropriate my property and my business. I think it's more about the weird belief that it's other people who will be making the sacrifices.
These Democratic Socialists might turn out to be as bad as the Tea Party members.
America has been strong enough to withstand the Tea Party. I believe we are tough enough to handle some folks who call themselves socialists in reaction to the ugliness that has misappropriated the franchise of the Republican Party.
The Tea Party never stopped getting their SS checks.... I don't see how they 'failed.'
You mean that evil TEA party (taxed enough already) that left the National Mall cleaner than when they arrived, and who had purely peaceful and respectful rallies, and who worked through the electoral system to get some people elected withou a single violent incident? That TEA party?
lol @ survived the Tea Party. We survived a civil war.
You do realize your hyperbole makes your onions worthless right?
Just ask the Ds - once every single Republican was called a nazi, it started to lose its effect and resulted in a backlash.
Not that they've learned and it's doubtful you will either, but I'm here to help.
Government means force. Laws are enforced with deadly force.
More government means more force.
Socialism is about as much government this side of Communism. That means more government force than we have now in the USA. The USA already has socialist welfare programs like ObamaCare, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid.
Tony wants MORE of that.
People are lying to themselves or complete idiots if they don't see the writing on the wall. Mission creep has been extremely successful with the Left essentially hijacking education, entertainment and news over the last 30 years.
Honestly, Trump was the last hope for some kind of slowing the incremental Socialist steamroller.
Lefties were getting more and more bold with attacking freedom.
We laugh at lefties banning straws but they are only limited because they are out of power for now. Letting up on them, they will continue their destruction of the USA.
All we can hope is that many of them kill themselves after Election 2018 goes badly for them and Trump wins reelection in 2020.
After Trump gets reelected, we will see the Left increase violence and the end of the Democratic Party as a major political force. The Democratic Party will be fringe Lefties that most Americans wont want to associate with.
"What we do is we then call the business to 1. inform them of the law, and 2. find out what there story is," Stein said. "The law in North Carolina protects against a business charging an unreasonably excessive price."
What we don't do is learn economics.
The business just has to explain how higher prices under the conditions is perfectly reasonable and not excessive. If the prices were excessive, no one would pay them.
IIRC a lot of software and other technology is sold at huge multiples above base price...
Ignore that - the question is how would they ever determine 'reasonable price'? As profit margins in different industries are very different such as very low profit margins in grocery stores and restaurants, but much higher margins in automobile tire sales.
So if company a buys food and sells it for roughly 10% more than purchase prices, but company b buys tires and sells them for 100% more than they paid, doesn't that automatically mean tire centers are evil?
If some young kids (true story) engineered a new fishing product which is a floating bouy which generates proprietary sounds which theoretically attract fish and he can build and package for 14 bucks, but clients are willing to pay 100, is it unreasonable for him to sell at that price?
I know, FYTY, but woke companies will never be investigated and the others will always lose...
It's like they had a brainstorming session with one key goal for the meeting: come up with a law which allows unlimited power to punish businesses those in government don't like. And note, the group will only succeed if the idea also opens up huge avenues for corruption.
And this is what happened...
The FBI declined to open a criminal investigation into Brett Kavanaugh based on the contents of the letter Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D?Calif.) turned over to agents.
The deep state didn't play along with Dianne?
So is the FBI going to investigate Feinstein for lying to them?
I think she has immunity because this was somehow related to her job. But she should be publicly shamed for wasting the FBI's time.
"I think she has immunity because this was somehow related to her job."
She's team blue.
Team BLEW
That would be glorious.
I guess I might fantasize about that too were I a half-educated, intolerant, disaffected, right-wing yahoo.
So, instead, you fantasized about the Feinstein Letter from the perspective of a half-educated, intolerant, disaffected left-wing smeghead? I can see that.
I do not know what was in that letter, but an elected representative forwarding information from a citizen to a law enforcement agency seems relatively unobjectionable to me.
I may lack the persecution fears and hatred toward government that seem to afflict the anti-social, disaffected elements of our society.
"forwarding information from a citizen to a law enforcement agency seems relatively unobjectionable to me."
After sitting on it for 6 months, and failing to actually forward it to the proper authorities, but instead to the FBI for the purpose of optics.
We understand Rev, you're too stupid to understand what is happening, which is also why you continue to give us your opinion, you're too stupid to know that your opinion is grossly ignorant.

Give me a fucking break. Riders are often a danger to pedestrians and leave trash blocking sidewalks.
Bicyclists should be sent to gulags. In all seriousness
Roads can't get fleas, so they get bicyclists instead.
Chemical warfare seems indicated.
I just refuse to move for them at cross walks. Bicyclists seem to think they always get the right of way.
My problem with bicyclists is that they want to ride on the roads AND the sidewalks.
So? big deal.
So, they're supposed to adhere to the road laws and they don't and can't when they ride the sidewalk, leaving everyone around them to run the risk of killing them.
My problem is they dress up like ninjas, ignore street signs and road laws, and then bitch that drivers aren't courteous.
Fantastic comeback comment in the stream of "One almost hit me!" comments:
"Son, you got a panty on your head."
Fantastic quote from a fantastic movie, and absurdly appropriate for the absurd comments.
Drivers leave cars all over the streets.

"Give me a fucking break. Riders are often a danger to pedestrians and leave trash blocking sidewalks."
Here's our non-fave ignoramus trying to change definitions again.
Fuck off.
The light rail train in Minneapolis kills an average of 2.5 people per year. And if I raced the Green line train from St. Paul on a 15 mph scooter, the scooter would win.
The light rail train in Minneapolis kills an average of 2.5 people per year. And if I raced the Green line train from St. Paul on a 15 mph scooter, the scooter would win.
It's rare when I agree with Cathy, but in my experience the scooter companies like Lime and Bird appear to be run by the same people who planned the Fyre Festival.
If you want to keep government off your back then you need to at least take responsibility for your own property. Leaving your broken-down electric scooters all over the city is a great way to invite The Man into your life.
They are gathered every day and recharged overnight. What's the problem?
Not here. I would guess half of them on the streets are dead.
The city government has already fired a shot across their bow: fix your shit, or we're going to fix it for you.
1) They aren't.
2) They are recharged, but they have no regular maintenance inspection schedule. So hopping on a scooter and realizing the brakes don't work or that the accelerator has 2 modes (0 and max) in the middle of your commute is bad news.
Then don't use them.
Give me a fucking break. Pedestrians are often a danger to riders and leave trash blocking sidewalks.
So Cathy, why, in your world, do pedestrians get special privileges?
I think pedestrians who leave things on the sidewalk should also have their property disposed of and if possible they should be ticketed.
Yes, we understand you're a Stalinist.
Why allow pedestrians on the sidewalk at all. Sometimes they block my scooter.
"leave trash blocking sidewalks."
Firestone, stop being a stupid liar.
Second "ERMAGERD!!!!!"
Cops found marijuana in the apartment of Botham Jean...
They might want to better read the room if they think this is going to look like anything that it is. There are very few who will go along with an obvious smear campaign.
She shot him because he had pot and then she shot him a few more times because she didn't know he had pot. Yeah, that should play well in court.
it makes me wonder exactly what excuse they found for searching his apartment. They have a woman who broke in to his apartment and murdered him. She admits it. She admits that she was there by mistake.
So what, exactly, are you searching for?
Maybe evidence that she's lying about the reason she was there? Maybe they actually suspect that she was there to rob him?
I was once a city employee (Fire) and our policy was automatic drug/alcohol test for any "accident" (basically driving), and I mean ANY, even just scratching the fender. I'd be curious what the policy is with this Police Department. I'm guessing she didn't get tested.
I worked at a place like that - and this young kid working part time comes out of the elevator with like 20 conference room chairs stacked on a dolly, when he turns, he loses control and the chairs fall on me.
He waited to get tested just as I did, but they said that they only needed to test me. The 15 year old asked the 35 year old security manager, 'Are you serious? I injured him.'
The reply: pass test required on injuries or accidents in company vehilces.
Idiots.
The point of a search in this context appears to be to obtain information that might illuminate the seemingly inexplicable. Were they acquainted? Was either stalking the other? Might she possess a reason to kill him, or vice versa?
So stupid irrelevant reasons that can give the cop cover.
It is no surprise you support such things.
lol - so the alleged perp's friends and colleagues are going to search the apartment to find evidence against the perp?
Bravo - I think this is now the stupidest thing you've posted so far and trust me that it's an accomplishment for you to have done so.
Have they searched the Cops apartment yet that would seem like due diligence and more appropriate
If it were an ordinary citizen we would be in jail. Why not the swine?
Let's search the officer's apartment and publicly list any contraband and sexual aids found.
Also, do they seriously expect me to believe that shit wasn't planted?
Also, do they seriously expect me to believe that shit wasn't planted?
As far as I'm concerned, they still have to prove it wasn't hers and/or that this wasn't a robbery gone bad.
Even if it wasn't planted it's completely irrelevant to the issue at hand.
Unless Officer Guyger had a valid search warrant she wasn't supposed to be there in the first place.
Exactly. She was the intruder and he could have defended himself in any manner she would have still been at fault.
She is 100% at fault, no matter what he false excuses are.
My question is why did the police search the victim's apartment? Were they just looking for something to help the shooter? Would they have searched the police woman's apartment if the roles were reversed? I doubt it.
she was going back for her bag?
Despite Nixon's Loss to Cuomo, It Was a Good Night for Democratic Socialists in New York: Reason Roundup
It's Socialists that are Democrats, not Democratic Socialists (which means something different).
Some Democrats are Progressives and some are Communists and some are Anarchists and some are SJWs.
But all of them are damn dirty lefties. Amirite?
If you're to the Left of Libertarians, then you know that you are a lefty.
Libertarianism is more of an "up" concept, not left or right. Moving left or right just leads towards authoritarianism.
Among righties.
On a left-right political spectrum: Left is Communism and Socialism- Center is Libertarianism- Right is Monarchy and Theocracy.
The more you move from the Centrist, the less freedoms you have.
I identify as political cardinal direction fluid.
Is that anything like transmission fluid?
Sounds like blinker fluid to me. "Directional", y'know? 😀
Nolan chart is being recently pushed but its wrong.
The opposite of Authoritarian is NOT Libertarianism. Libertarians are fine with tiny and limited government. Pure Anarchy would have zero authoritarianism.
Liberal does not mean more freedoms.
The Nolan Chart is actually pretty accurate. Anarchy would be extreme libertarianism, ie there is no authority at all. Minarchists or those in favor or limited government realize that there is a small role for government to provide for common defense interests, protect rights from transgression, settle contract disputes, etc.
The opposite of Authoritarian is NOT Libertarianism. Libertarians are fine with tiny and limited government. Pure Anarchy would have zero authoritarianism.
You're thinking in black and white extremes, as you seem to always be prone to do. Of course libertarianism is the opposite of authoritarianism, by definition. Libertarians are fine with limited government because it's a scale, not an absolute position. Anarchy would be extreme libertarianism, at the very top of the chart. Minarchists would be just below that position on the scale. Theoretical totalitarianism would be on the extreme bottom. Most dictatorships are somewhere just above totalitarianism.
That what a chart does. Help set things in black and white, so we are all on the same page.
I also let off the question of who is Centrist then? Democrats? No fucking way Democrats are generally the same as someone like Ken Schultz who is not Republican and not Libertarian.
Centrist seems like a cop-out to where people generally stand politically.
As I said "Liberal" is not about more rights.
A linear spectrum also works because Lefties have no political issues in common with Social Conservatives. Abortion is a great example of a black and white issue. Even if you only are for abortions in the case of incest or rape, you are FOR abortions.
NAP is another. You are either for NAP or not.
Libertarianism is great for making many issues black and white (simplified) and not letting people be wishy-washy and get away with it. GayJay publicly said he was for forcing bakers to bake cakes, so we Libertarians blasted him for it.
Libertarianism has its share of faults too as we all know.
"The Nolan Chart is actually pretty accurate"
While it's true that libertarians generally agree with a lot of anarchist principles they are very different from each other and in no way is anarchy a subset of libertarianism.
Libertarians belive a government is necessary - anarchists do not.
So if we moved closer to a libertarian government from where we are we could be moving theoretically 'closer' to anarchy, they're not exactly related.
Note Christopher Hitchens once said something tangentially similar - in the history of man, we started with tons of different regions each with many different gods and we transitioned to most religions believing in only one god. He just went one step further 🙂
But in this case - the final step for anarchists is completely incompatible with libertarianism given one requires a government and the other explicitly states having one is opression.
+1
I'm a libertarian.
Do you claim to be a libertarian.
Rev. Arthur L. Kirkland|9.14.18 @ 10:52AM|#
"I'm a libertarian."
You're a fucking liar, asshole.
No, Arthur, you're a hicklib.
The Rev is a comedian. But not a very good one.
"Do you claim to be a libertarian."
You do, despite your posts proving that a lie.
Yet you hold not one single belief compatible with libertarianism.
Side note: This is why I don't tell many others I'm libertarian, because too many who are objectively not stole the title when they thought it cool. They use it now instead of independent. And just as independents are never actually independent, most people self claiming libertarian beleifs appear to have none.
Libertarians can usually spot other libertarians based on what is said.
Just like libertarians can spot anarchists, Lefties and Republicans hiding among us.
Wouldn't it be socialists that are Democrats? That is, there is no reason to capitalize the word, socialist.
"Socialist" is a proper noun when it refers to an organized group, the whole or part. When "socialist" refers to a general philosophy, it is not a proper noun.
Some socialists are nationalists.
True.
The Nazis were National Socialists.
Hmm. So what would you call a nationalist who supports the welfare state?
I wonder...
Do they want to control the means of production?
Do they want to own all property and citizens?
^ See, when you point out nationalists who want economic protectionism, suddenly the definition of "socialist" needs to be really exact.
SEE...Socialism means government controlling the means of production.
You can have a volunteer welfare state.
"Now would be a good time for nonsocialists to start figuring out what makes them tick."
Yes, let's try to understand socialists. Hey, but not nationalists or something. That's different. Nothing is more libertarian than socialism.
Your conservative impulse to defend the status quo probably explains why you ran with a Democratic Party conspiracy theory yesterday absent all evidence.
I always thought envy, a profound sense of entitlement and ignorance well explained what makes most socialists tick.
"Nothing is more libertarian than socialism."
Freedom is slavery. It has been said before.
Scooters are great! Don't complain to the cops about them.
Unless, I guess, you want to see a bunch of cops in shorts.
"The FBI declined to open a criminal investigation into Brett Kavanaugh based on the contents of the letter Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D?Calif.) turned over to agents. This story appears to be a nothingburger."
Maybe, I don't know, don't spread conspiracy theories absent all evidence, Alex Jones?
The FBI got a tiny shred of credibility back for rejecting a baseless claim of criminal conduct so quickly.
Lefty response: The FBI is running scared because of the persecution by Orange Hitler.
From the article, she redacted all names from the letter except Kavanaugh.
So what was the point of referring it to the FBI?
Best case scenario, they have absolutely nothing to go on.
She had to know that there couldn't be any allegation that would still sustain a criminal charge this many years later. And then she redacted any information that would even allow them to follow up.
It is less than a baseless claim. It is an intentional smear campaign, again using the FBI to lend credibility. "I referred the matter to the FBI" is fundamentally dishonest in this context.
I blame her constituents. This is not abnormal behavior for her (or other California politicians - See Maxine Waters, Bob Dornan). They keep electing her, despite her obvious character flaws. So I blame them.
"They keep electing her, despite her obvious character flaws. So I blame them."
I never voted for that hag, either, but the problem is the alternatives. WHEW!
Its defamation.
The FBI can only go after federal crimes.
The Senate should expel her immediately.
She got it widely reported that his behavior as a young man generated an FBI investigation. Mission accomplished.
They keep electing her precisely because she does stuff like this. She likely knows most will see through this, but doesn't care because she's really only talking to her voters.
And as she lives in an area where whatever D wins the party nomination will automatically win the general election, she only has to court a small percentage of hard core party people (most people, even those who openly associate with either party ever vote in primaries).
Which ends with her saying seemingly crazy things, but that's what the very small hard core left voters want and this is why she continues to get re-elected.
Note: I think her and others doing this to win at all costs is hurting society and it's getting worse, but why she did it has the same answer to why anyone does anything long term - because they believe such actions will further their end goals.
She's no different, just harder to see with such idiotic acts.
Indeed. Didn't Robby treat this like a Serious News Story just yesterday?
Reason still seems to be laboring under the delusion that the Democrats and the Media are acting in good faith when it comes to this administration.
Jeff Bezos calls on Trump to stop demonizing the media.
Yeah, Jeff. He'll get right on that.
What's that Jeff? You want MORE tariffs?
We need tariffs on home package delivery. F you Bezos.
Time to point out again that if you have problems with Amazon, such as using that worthless OnTrac delivery service anywhere outside cities, send email to jeff@amazon.com. Provide lots of details, and almost always a staffer will take care of it.
Great timing, in light of the NYT hit piece on Nikki Haley today.
The one where the Times criticizes Haley for expensive curtains that were purchased...in 2016, by the Obama Administration.
Scumbag edges out deranged leftard, film at 11.

New York is just a terrible place.
The shame is they could not both lose.
In addition to sunsetting, term limits, and strict non-consecutive terms every elected position at all levels of government needs to have 'void' option. I'm leaning towards a 'vacant' option as well, but the people should be able to routinely say and even default to 'no one should occupy this position'.
Jeff Bezos calls on Trump to stop demonizing the media.
That bald motherfucker would have that deer-in-the-headlights look when the Lefties sent him to gulags too.
What me?
Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort reportedly reaches tentative plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller
24 guilty pleas or indictments so far. The Con Man surrounds himself with pure scum.
How many are related to Russia fever dreams?
At least three. Manafort, Flynn, Papadapolous, maybe others including the idiot son Jr.
Manafort: prosecuted for tax evasion, money laundering, and failure to register as a lobbyist, which all occurred more than four years before the election. No nefarious Russia collusion is alleged
Flynn: prosecuted for lying to the FBI about something that wasn't even illegal. He said that he never discussed sanctions with Russia's ambassador during the presidential transition (note after Trump won election), which was not true, because there was a two sentence conversation where sanctions were discussed
Papadapolous: prosecuted for lying to the FBI
Zero prosecutions are related to fever dreams. You and Reason bought into a CIA conspiracy theory
It's just Weigel being Weigel: a lying scumbag with a hideous rosacea-riddled face.
Most of those, if not all, will be pardoned by Trump.
Could you imagine the head explosions at CNN if he pardoned them? It would be the ultimate trolling move, so yes, it's likely to happen.
Exactly. He thought he could collude with Russia to steal the election from the most qualified candidate ever. But he didn't count on Robert Mueller, who is waiting for control of Congress to change hands so he can deliver his final report. Drumpf's presidency will be over within a year.
#TrumpRussia
#Impeach
Yep - someday soon Mueller will have his very own Spartacus moment. /sarc
12 of those indictments are Russian FSB agents, so there will never be a trial or conviction.
Indicting ham sandwiches makes for an impressive record.
Wait until the new special prosecutor investigates Hillary. Obama will have a bunch of his scumbag advisors exposed too. Lefties are playing with fire, since they have so much corruption to hide.
Getting details out in the sunlight of the Clinton foundation, Bill's pedophile trips, and Obama's preacher Wright would be wonderful, but I have my doubts it will ever happen.
And the whitey tape! And the child pedo ring Hillary ran out of the pizza joint!
Just think of all the investigations you nutcases could conduct!
We have Mueller and his nutcase investigation.
Just think of all the investigations you nutcases could conduct!
No investigation needed. The Clinton Foundation was exculpated from the Emoluments Clause by virtue of the fact that all payments were vetted through the White House. Payments which the Foundation admits to having failed to disclose to POTUS. An hour's worth of Googling and a few phone calls to people volunteering the information and the 'investigation' is done.
Reminds me of when Ashcroft indicted a bunch of bong manufacturers - during the press release he said they made x number of arrests after 18 months of work.
Yet every single company owner indicted was openly selling over the Internet with no attempt to hide themselves.
So DOJ - 18 months.
Any normal person - simple Internet seacrh.
"24 guilty pleas or indictments so far."
Several of the folks actually know Trump, a couple of them worked for him at one time or another, and those un-paid parking tickets will come back to bite you.
Fuck off, turd.
Willie Nelson is playing his first-ever political concert, for Beto O'Rourke. Some fans are abandoning him.
These wastoid hippies and their believe that Democrats are on their side.
Who the fuck would abandon Willie Nelson at this point because he publicly supported leftist politics? This is like hearing some Nugent fans abandoned him after he supported Trump. (Well, apart from those who felt betrayed that he'd back a pro gun control candidate.)
Willie Nelson, who has always been a democrat, supports a democrat running for Senate. News at 10. Although the red headed stranger is hard to pin down, politically, and has done numerous interviews with Alex Jones.
I always thought Willie Nelson was low profile.
Willie has been an activist on a number of issues, and is very liberal, although as history has shown he is no friend of the IRS.
>>>no friend of the IRS.
who is?
Well, he did makes millions each year for multiple years and paid nothing to taxes...
Don't get me wrong, I'm not pro IRS and think the current tax code is complicated to the point that anyone rich enough with multiple diverse incomes streams is unlikely to be able to completely comply, IIRC Willie just didn't pay.
So if the IRS must be after someone, it seems Willie made his own bed.
It's just libertarians hate taxes so they saw this as some activist move instead of it being what it was: tax evasion.

Verizon Just Destroyed The Case For 'Net Neutrality'
With the advent of 5G home and wireless services, the "net neutrality" argument falls down like a house of cards. If one internet provider does something stupid, like block certain websites, consumers will simply switch providers.
Funny how the people saying they will all die without Net Neutrality, because they don't want Big Tech stopping them from bing watching Glow, love having Big Tech silence their political opponents.
I don't know what Glow is, but if anyone is watching it with bing I presume it is porn.
I don't know what Glow is, but if anyone is watching it with bing I presume it is porn.
I'll save you the disappointment and tell you that you're wrong. It was indeed a sad day when I discovered that the internet would produce a show about female wrestling that was nearly less pornographic than WWE Divas. In one season, there is *a* sex scene, it falls squarely into the old 'scinemax' category.
WWE Divas
My bad, the show was Total Divas.
Actually, historians will point to this major development as the beginning of the end of Drumpf's reign of terror. Kavanaugh's #MeToo problem will sink his nomination (like the baseball ticket, handshake snub, and white power gesture scandals already should have). In November, the #BlueWave will put Democrats in control of not only the House, but also the Senate. Orange Hitler will be unable to force through any more extremist Supreme Court justices. And by this point in 2019, #ItsMuellerTime will deliver the evidence that leads to impeachment.

Nah, that is his shtick.

North and South Korea Open Full-Time Liaison Office at Border
No Trump credit forthcoming by Lefties or South Korea.
I mean, of course, North Korea would rather talk than steamroll South Korea if it weren't for the USA protection guarantees.
What credit should Trump get for this? This is the policy of South Korea's government. The only credit that Trump should get is for not interfering in these talks. Otherwise, he isn't the impetus for the talks nor is he really relevant in these conversations
Then why haven't these talks happened in 60+ years?
Hmmm... what has changed....
I am not discounting South Korean work to make this happen but Trump had "absolutely something to do with it".
"Hmmm... what has changed...."
The new government in South Korea?
Definitely.
There has been South Korea governments up for peace and North Korea rejects them.
Something else, perhaps?
"There has been South Korea governments up for peace and North Korea rejects them."
Don't comment on a region that you are not familiar with.
"Don't comment on a region that you are not familiar with." Ditto.

BBC - Trump credit for peace talks
Of course they are going to praise the president of their closest and most important ally.
As I said, credit for Trump and the USA.
As I said, South Korea governments up for peace and North Korea rejects them.
You refuse to give the USA and Trump any credit which I find interesting.
There would be no South Korea if it weren't for the USA.
North Korea is talking with South Korea for more reasons than Moon Jae-in is a great guy.
I could have sworn reading an article where the South Koreans did in fact give credit to Trump for his role in this.
BBC discussed it and I just cited it. You beat me to it.

Merkel 'outraged' over far right's Nazi chants at German protest rally
Chancellor angered by Koethen demonstration following death of German who fought Afghans
The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, has expressed anger after far-right demonstrators chanted Nazi slogans as they marched over the death of a German man following a fight with two Afghans.
(The Guardian)
Tamp down the far right violence when you can, Merkel.
Super Typhoon Mangkhut is hurtling through the Pacific, boasting 180 mph winds threatening millions of people across Asia in what is estimated to be one of the strongest systems on record.
Nearly 37 million people are estimated to be in the storm's path, according to the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System.
Mangkhut, which is equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, has prompted mass evacuations in the Philippines and China.
USA has its own problems with a Category 1 hurricane.
Jeff Bezos. Where were you when Obama was acting like a dick towards the press? Please, shut the fuck up and make sure Amazon gets my stuff on time.
Speaking of Obama, why is he in Ohio showcasing his boring rhetorical and oratorical skills when he should be in North Carolina blowing back at the hurricane?
Canada should've gotten some Caribbean colonies or something. Don't say it didn't work that way, because Australia ended up with quite a few island colonies.
We were offered islands back in the 1980s. I forget which ones. But we turned them down because it would be perceived as us being colonialists.
Or something.
I thought Cuba was their colony. Isn't their PM even a descendant of the Castro family?
Good for Reason for not burying the lede totally.
Fuck the governor's race.* The real story is that, in the most pro-incumbent institution in perhaps the most pro-incumbent state in the country, six longstanding centrist Democratic state senators lost their districts to democratic-socialist challengers. Six. NY state senators essentially hold those jobs until retirement. These challengers had little money and were opposed by the state party, the unions, and similar power players. Also Democratic primary turnout was enormous--twice what it was in 2014.
In a state where incumbents of both parties have historically largely cooperated mostly with each other in order to keep their jobs, this will pull the NY Democratic Party far to the left extreme. For one thing, we will have single-payer health care if the Democrats take the state senate. If the Republicans cannot use the victories of these scary-sounding and mostly unqualified and unknown socialist activists to frighten the suburban moms to vote Republican--this in a state in which these Democratic insurgents are the most radical, and the Republicans the most "suburban mom"ish in the entire country, they are doomed as a party. And this is indeed what you are seeing around the country this year, and what you will see happen to the Republicans as a national party.
*By which I mean, fuck whitey.
Price gouging is an example of market failure, where incentives like "low supply" cause suppliers to raise prices, which also incentivizes supply-side activity that counter acts the shortage.
This is inefficient because we know you should feel sorry for people in a bad spot and, at best, give your stuff away for free as a humanitarian gesture.
Thus, we need government to balance out this inefficiency with price controls, thereby insuring that people pay a fair price for anything they can manage to buy, and shortages will only be solved by charity or nothing at all, which we all know is optimal.
OMG! Another major Drumpf scandal!
Nikki Haley's View of New York Is Priceless. Her Curtains? $52,701. Our latest update re housing/decor from the Trump-era diplomatic front by @GardinerHarris
52 grand for curtains???!!! You can bet the #BlueWave Congress will be investigating this obvious misappropriation of funds.
When is Aaron Schock going to make his big comeback as an HGTV host?
You shouldn't joke about an issue this serious.
Fortunately Ted Lieu is on the case.
This is not okay. As a Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I call on @HouseForeign Chairman @RepEdRoyce to hold an oversight hearing on @StateDept spending on @nikkihaley and her deputy.
#Resist
In defense, the curtains themselves were only $30,000. The rest is for the equipment needed to open and close them automatically.
In Haley's defense, the article states in the sixth paragraph that the purchase for the curtains was approved in 2016 during the Obama administration.
Yet no effort was taken to stop the purchase even during a big show of budget cuts at the department.
1. If it was a contract that was in place then the government could only "terminate it for convenience" If the gov does that, the gov has to pay the full contract cost. It might have been good optics to do so, but it would not have saved a dime.
2. How likely is it that Haley even knew anything about it?
More nothing burgers. Expensive ones.
It's times like this Tony when I start to wonder if you're not an extremely clever parody account.
OBL, but without the obvious trolling.
Spock, you're not the only one around here to theorize that. We've all wondered if he's a parody every so often, but in this case I think Poe's Law cuts towards he honestly believes he's being intellectually consistent and making valid claims. He's just that deluded.
So the article should actually be titled: "Nikki Haley Failed to Stop $52,000 Curtain Purchase Approved by Samantha Powers"
These are the sorts of things that used to get libertarians hot with righteous anger. So you're defending the Obama administration's purchase?
This is your classic "Yeah, what I said was disingenuous and wrong, but it's the spirit of what I said that matters. I totally care about spending all of a sudden"
Change "spending" with "issue du jour" and you're describing the democrat party for the last two years.
No, dipshit, he's saying that's the press is pretty damned one-sided to present this as a Trump outrage when it is really an Obama outrage.
A parody poster might have made that characterization, but the article laid out the facts.
You know what would be a better criticism of Haley, rather than the make believe that the media runs? Haley is an unabashed warmonger who would gladly start war with Iran.
That's why they go after this petty stuff. Because any of the media pet candidates (including Hillary) could also be categorized as an unabashed warmonger.
An average household yearly salary on curtains for a government official.... no big deal to us, we're just libertarians!
"An average household yearly salary on curtains for a government official.... no big deal to us"
No, we were quite upset over all of Obama's stupid spending, and Bush's and everyone else's.
But as you would have learned if you paid any attention ever, we also understand how contracts work.
Which you seem to be having trouble with.
Did you favor the Obama Iran deal? I don't recall.
The real thing or the fantasy conspiracy bullshit you probably have in mind?
Not you, Einstein.
Mr. Say'n knows I would be talking to him about foreign policy.
Yes, I supported the Iran Deal, because I support terrorists or whatever slur people say about those who say "a deal is better than the alternative"
Doesn't matter. There's no defense for this. My hero David Hogg has analyzed the situation and concluded the only solution is for Nikki Haley to resign.
Dear Nikki Haley, There are starving children in America everyday and you have the audacity to misappropriate thousands of tax dollars for your own lavish lifestyle. Resign immediately sincerely, America
An interesting side story to your side story...
The war against "hate" and "fake news" showed up in the responses:
There was a link to an image in that post. The image in question? The text of the NYT article that said that Haley had no say in the purchase, which was approved during the Obama administration.
So yeah, we totally will only use that tool to combat hate speech and fake news... never to further our political biases.
Dear David Hogg: all the money you collect and waste trying to undermine the enumerated and fundamental right of self-defense would be much better spent on starving children. Please tell your paymaster Bloomberg. Sincerely, human beings all over the fucking place.
My hero David Hogg
I LOL'ed at this. War hero, combat veteran, holocaust survivor.
Yes, but does the carpet match the drapes?
In Haley's case? I mean obviously. But, would definitely need pics
I mean, I wouldn't not look at them.
Ok..... that's enough.... roll'em back up...

Hopefully those are some spectacular curtains, though I cannot imagine how curtains would amazing enough to justify that price.
"Price gouging's illegal because no business should take advantage of people's desperation."
"The National Debt is legal because no taxpayer should be shielded from the government's desperation."
How the heck is anyone, including the almighty FBI, supposed to investigate something with no names for an incident 35 years ago?
Quite the chain of control there.
Clear to everybody else.
Supreme court politics ain't beanbag. Ask Mitch McConnell.
Any opportunity passed by Democrats to soil the reputation of or attempt to kill the nomination of a Republican SC nominee is political malpractice. If it were up to me, even if I knew Kavanaugh were 100% certain to be confirmed, I'd see to it that his name was smeared so much that his children cry.
Garland. Never forget.
Garland was not the first justice-nominee to be denied a vote. Democrats did it to Republican nominees. But I see you have forgotten them.
Not for a year. Not for no reason other than it was the wrong party doing the nominating. Are you trying to convince me or yourself?
Yes for a year, yes for purely political reasons. Go look them up.
I don't see that anywhere on Slate.
How about you list them for me.
Tony get off your lazy ass and Google them
You remember Google? The Lefty platform caught openly discussing silencing non-Lefty political activities.
The Lefty platform caught openly discussing silencing non-Lefty political activities.
Again, this undersells the point. It's not like the CEO gave some of his private money to an organization who opposed an unpopular ballot measure or took a toke of weed on the Joe Rogan show. They were rather openly discussing silencing dissenting political views and activities as policy at a mandatory meeting.
In Tony world, not giving someone a vote is the same as creating a circus when your party specifically created the precedent that enabled your parties voice to be ignored while in the minority.
See, it's good when Democrats nuke tools that allow Republicans in the minority to disagree, but bad when Republicans go forward using that precedent.
Tony is utterly bereft of anything even approaching honesty or intelligence.
And yet many of the commentariat still attempt to have actual conversations with him instead of treating him like the lying political operative that he is.
The Biden rule. It came back to Biden in the ass.
Yes, Ol' Mitch was forced by the rules to behave that way, something he deeply regrets I'm sure.
I hate you people.
It is not fair to use the same sauce for the goose that was used on the gander, for reasons.
Tony has had a rough 21 months since Trump was duly elected.
All the lefty narratives are getting countered by fact and therefore do not work on Americans like they used to.
Tony and other Lefties on Reason have not chased off all Libertarians and Reasonnites willing to challenge Lefty nonsense.
Tony knows that election 2018 will go badly for Lefties.
Poor Tony.
Harriet Miers. Sometimes forget.
Remember when Democrats thought that Hillary was assured to win?
The Obamas were living in fantasy land with that crap. What good did it do? It made them well-liked, but it didn't achieve anything. Only having the votes in Congress achieved anything.
It's easy to rise above it all when you're in power. Or when you are certain that your person (Hillary) will be in power.
Obama was NOT well-liked.
Someday you'll direct me to these secret special polls in which Trump is gaining popularity and Obama wasn't literally the most popular president ever elected.
Reagan is still the most popular president elected since 1964. He got 525 Electoral College votes in 1984. Obama only got 365. Nixon got 520 in 1972. Trump got 304.
Electoral college archives-Federal register
Georgia Washington is the only president to have gotten 100% of the Electoral Votes. 69 Electoral vote the first election and 132 the second election.
I said popular, not got the most EC votes.
Most Popular vote does not matter.
Most popular president gets the most Electoral votes. That was George Washington.
Furthermore, some people who dont vote can 'like' a president. Just because Obama got 69M votes in 2008 does not mean that more non-voters didnt like him. Obama also had people who did not 'like' him but voted for him.
I voted for Obama. I knew Obama would be worthless when a Republican Congress checked his ass and I was right. McCain would have got even more Americans killed in foreign wars.
I voted for Obama and hated Obama.
I hated McCain too but he would have gotten more done with a GOP Congress.
I voted for Obama and hated Obama.
Hold the presses. LC just admitted to voting for Obama?
Yup. See my explanation above.
I have admitted this before.
Hey I also voted for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Primary to fuck Hillary over.
Then I voted for Gary Johnson in the general election.
I will likely be voting for Trump in 2020. Georgia will go Trump anyways, so a good LP candidate might get my vote.
Her lips were moving, therefore...
There was a Wookie translator in the room?
Kavanaugh is 100% certain to be confirmed. Not only is he going to be confirmed, he will receive at least 2 or 3 votes from democrats.
And his confirmation will be one of the greatest days ever. For probably the first time in my lifetime, the court will be able to move the country back towards the constitutional federalist republic with truly separate and co-equal branches of government that it was always supposed to be, and away from the centralized bureaucratic administrative state that scumbags like you changed it into.
Grinding you into the dirt is going to be so awesome, and I can't wait!
It will be better once Trump replaces Thomas next year when he retires.
Then RBG and Breyer will croak and Trump will get to replace them too.
I can hear the Lefty screams already.
Let's not overreact here.
Kavanaugh is utterly subservient to precedent. This is not a good sign and does not lend to the hope that he will be part of a "rollback" movement on the court.
There is a lot of bad precedent that can easily be cleaned up by following better precedent.
The lefties on the SCOTUS make up new precedent or twist old precedent to fit their agenda.
Even if Kavanaugh is subservient to precedent, he can still make big impacts against bad precedent and Lefty agendas.
Kavanaugh is utterly subservient to precedent. This is not a good sign and does not lend to the hope that he will be part of a "rollback" movement on the court.
Even that milquetoast resume is superior to an activist judge. Note that no one at all seemed to care that Kagan is utterly unqualified to be a regular judge, let alone a Supreme Court judge.
Curious. It's almost as if the left keeps putting politicians and nominee's forward without any record whatsoever since that way, their future mendaciousness can't be properly evaluated by a look at their previous record .
No record, no real review. It worked for Obama, and it worked for Kagan, hell it worked for Occasional Cortex. We can expect a lot more nobodies that 'suddenly' turn out to be far-left socialist/Marxists going forward.
(Assuming confirmation) As time moves forward, we'll of course see, but Rs were ga-ga over Roberts....not sure they still are.
Point being, the only thing I'd be comfortable predicting here is all predictions on a SCOTUS nominees actions after confirmation will more than likely be wrong.
Time will tell to what degree.
Though I'd love to be pleasantly surprised if he will be attempting to reverse/erode bad precedents which increase overall liberty, I'm sure predicting future actions is far too prone to failure to be left to anyone without direct provable contact to 'the beyond'.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, confirmed to supreme court by 96 to 3 vote.
They never forgot the Biden Rule.
They've got more facts than they did with the Russia crap. Look how far that got them!
It's not a total nothingburger.
It shows us that democrats are lying slanderous bitches with no integrity.

I'm sorry, but Dianne Feinstein being a dishonest cunt isn't really about me.

That's big talk coming from a guy who supported Weinstein, shriek-poo.
God that was disgusting.
Bill Clinton molested kids on Lolita Express and Epstein Island.
Buttplugger loves Bill Clinton.
Another article from the ostensibly-Libertarian rag Reason about the New York gubernatorial race that doesn't mention the wildly active campaign of one Larry Sharpe, LP candidate for governor in NY. Nice.
Sharpe is friendly with the Mises Caucus and doesn't go around calling other libertarians Nazis. That's problematic.
We all know that the Mises Caucus and the Mises Institute are all racists, even though they seem to be the only libertarian groups that actually have minorities within their membership.
Does the Mises Caucus have any affiliation at all with the Mises Institute? Seems unlikely. Influencing internal LP politics seems dangerously close to influencing actual, non-pretend politics.
No, they have no official affiliation. But, the speakers that the caucus bring are primarily affiliated with the Institute.
Which caucus has the women in it? Asking for a friend.
Women at a Libertarian conference?

The sandwich making caucus.
The NYLP did not hold a primary last night.

"Plymouth State University (PSU) retalliated against two professors who dared to defend a woman against charges that she had sexually assaulted a teenager. One of the professors, Nancy Strapko, served as a paid expert witness for the defendant. The other, Michael Fischler, sent a letter to the court asking for leniency. The case brought significant media attention, and PSU declined to rehire Strapko. Administrators also forced Fischler to undergo Title IX training."
Shouldn't the court take an interest in possible retaliation against witnesses?
Please say Professor Strapko is a militant lesbian.
Indeed. This sounds like something from the old National Lampoon. Or maybe a Porky's sequel.

Yep, this is about the climate, right? Right?
The green is a bit thin on those watermellons.
Thin-skinned, you say?
Not to mention all the carbon expended by her trip to CA from Detroit.
No mention of that 'phone she used to take the selfie at the 'anti-corporation' protest, either.
Cops found marijuana in the apartment of Botham Jean, who was killed by police officer Amber Guyger after she accidentally entered his apartment, allegedly believing it was her own.
More pointedly, what did cops find in the bloodstream of Amber Guyger?
I myself originally parsed it as allegedly believing it was her own marijuana, not apartment. I like that better, so I am sticking with it.
"We murdered someone, but they had weed in their apartment or something"
Deserved to die because drugz.
"We murdered someone, and then planted weed in the apartment."
I read the articles and followed a couple of links.
Here's what else they found:
Guyer had made several noise complaints about this guy (who lived directly above her), including earlier that day.
Two witnesses say they heard someone banking on a door and yelling "let me in" immediately before the shooting.
The victim's apartment had a red, semi-circular doormat, while hers had none.
The doors automatically close - they are fire doors - and being slightly ajar would be very unlikely.
her story - that she came home and accidentally parked on the 4th rather than 3rd floor, went to what she thought was her apartment, put in the key and the door opened because it was slightly ajar, entered "her" apartment to find someone standing there, issued commands that were not followed and then fired in self defense - does not comport well with these facts.
What does match? That she was mad that he was making noise an went upstairs to confront him, an argument ensued and she murdered him in anger. That matches really damn well.
It's gonna be tough to prove beyond a reasonable doubt though.
It would be beyond easy if the perp weren't anointed with rights and powers above the average citizen.
"In Britain, Calls for a 4-Day Week. Can It Be Done?"

Shucks, you can have it right now. Here's your 4-day paycheck.
"I believe that in this century, we can win a four-day working week, with decent pay for everyone"
", since we have more than *eighty years* to accomplish it."
Presumably that is indeed what they are going for. Already in the US part-time work dominates the lower wage levels. I wonder if this is indeed the work-life balance that today's workers want or if she is just running her mouth. (Though I can't imagine that if you adopt it on the European Continent, when you combine that with their enormous summer vacations there will be much of any time anyone actually spends at work.)
In any case I suppose we can count on her and folks like her to try to involve the government in this matter.
Presumably that is indeed what they are going for. Already in the US part-time work dominates the lower wage levels.
Yes, and it's because of labor law, regulations on businessses, and things like the ACA. It was literally one of the arguments against those programs yet now people stand around slack-jawed wondering what happened.
Those laws work in favor of a few, while throwing many others under the bus.
Sure, NP. Four 10 hours days. Bam.
You can see the headlines just a few short years after implementation:
New Research shows productivity gains in Britain much less than US and other western countries and know one knows why.
The saddest news of the day by far: the great Willie Nelson is lowering himself to get involved in partisan politics.
Why Willie, why?? Say it isn't so.
The devil's weed?
Smoking weed leads to socialism. We have been warned about this since the A. Mitchell Palmer era and we laughed at them.
The IRS turned Willie into the Munching Candidate.
Willie's been active in far left causes for years, he just does it like Alec Baldwin. He actively supports them, but doesn't talk about it or give speeches.
So don't conflate his silence on political matters with disagreement of the more vocal people in his industry. He's a true believer, just smart enough to keep that separate (historically anyway).
Somebody should point out the obvious, which is that the more radicalized the Democrats become, the more likely swing voters in swing states are to reject them.
The belief that the rest of the country wants to be like New York is like the belief that US occupied Iraq was so wonderful during the insurgency that the rest of the Muslim world would want to emulate their democracy.
It's a pipe dream.
What is a pipe dream is thinking that Latinos will defect to the GOP in numbers large enough to offset their booming population in critical constituencies, or that Republicans will not continue to hemorrhage college educated yuppies even as they themselves boom in population in critical constituencies, or that the combination of those two will not allow Democrats to finally obtain their permanent majority.
As America becomes increasingly Latino, Latinos become increasingly Americanized. The Latino vote was an early constituency for Trump in the Nevada primaries, for instance. The idea that fourth and fifth generation Latinos vote solely on the issue of illegal immigration may even be racist. There isn't anything about being Latino that makes them immune to the same concerns as other blue collar workers in the white, blue collar, middle class. The Irish and Italians faced similar problems with assimilation. Might as well face it, Latinos are destined to become as all American as St. Patrick's Day, pizza, and Taco Bell.
And if you don't think college graduates will vote differently on taxes and spending as they become more affluent, you're crazy. I remember when everybody thought the Millennials would be immune to the forces of white flights because they're so woke. Soon as they have kids, they flee to the suburbs just like their parents did. The fact is, people respond to price signals, no matter what they say, and as people become more affluent, voting for politicians that spend and tax becomes more expensive.
Don't see any pipe dreams there.
Legalized Latinos resent illegal Latinos getting easy US Citizenship, when the older Latinos had to follow rules and earned their citizenship by following the rules Americans set forth.
Yours is indeed a successful rebuttal to the usual media claims that: (1) As you put it, "Latinos vote solely on the issue of illegal immigration"; and (2) Latinos have a special dislike for Trump. Both are obviously false, and I made neither.
Since when is illegal immigration the only reason a person would vote Democrat? And since when do returns for a certain candidate in a Republican primary have much of anything to do with the question of how popular the Republicans themselves are as a whole with the general population? Who won the black vote in the Republican primary in any given year, and what does that fact have to do with how many blacks vote Republican every November? It's like you decided to address an entirely different topic that has nothing to do with what I was talking about.
Also curiously irrelevant: The fact that young people move to the suburbs. Au contraire, this may be part of why the suburbs are becoming Democratic strongholds.
Since when is illegal immigration the only reason a person would vote Democrat?
Care to be a little more specific about why one would vote Democrat? Is their plan to hike taxes, perhaps? Or maybe their promise to ensure small businesses can't exist, and only 'too big to fail' businesses should provide any services as they're easier to control? Riddle me this: who owns a lot of 'small businesses'? If you guessed 'immigrants', congrats.
Au contraire, this may be part of why the suburbs are becoming Democratic strongholds.
Citation for that? Because it wouldn't be surprising for, say, the San Francisco or Detroit suburbs to become 'Democratic strongholds' given that, well, they're already Democratic strongholds.
Well, NYC suburbs for one thing. Only certain Midwestern suburbs, like Milwaukee's and so forth, seem immune to the trend.
So yes, you do indeed mean cities that are already Democrat strongholds are becoming Democrat strongholds. That's rather what I expected.
Why would you expect that, in particular, from me? If you think Long Island and Westchester County have been historical Democratic strongholds, I don't know what to tell you. Or did you actually mean, as you say here, cities--in other words, moving the goalposts when we were talking about suburbs? Even if you didn't mean that, the fact that NYC was a "Democrat stronghold" also does not make a precipitous decline of Republicanism (was Trump's current personal lawyer not an easily re-elected term-limited mayor, or am I mistaken?) from its former significant presence in three boroughs (and a near stranglehold on one of them) in any way irrelevant to the point I am making. And add NYC and LI together and you have the majority of the population of an enormous state.
Has what was once a solidly purple state, with a large Republican State Senate majority, a powerful Republican senator, a Republican-leaning presidential voting record, a popular three-term Republican governor into the 21st century, a prominent national center of anti-illegal immigrant politics (so that Hillary was one of the most outspoken illegal immigration hawks) in the 2000s, etc.--now become a deep, deep blue one that is barely contested? Or am I fucking imagining things here and everything has been just as good as it ever was for Republicans?
I can't even.
You mean Senator Feinstein was just being a mendacious, grandstanding twat? What a shock.
More than likely the letter was just some sort of "he said, she said" kind of crap that no one in their right mind would lend any credence to, but that won't stop the Dems from pretending like it's some kind of incontrovertible proof that Kavanaugh is a big poopy-head or something.
It happened when he was in his teens, far beyond the statute of limitations?
What judge would sign off on such a warrant?
National Review has a good take on it.
national review hasn't had a good take in a decade
Probably a state, not federal, incident anyway.
Without actual facts or information its a load of defamatory bullshit. Maliciously accusing someone of a crime without it being true is utter bullshit.
Anonymous complaint. Could it be the same Anonymous? Certainly meets the M.O.
This is much less than (and much worse than) an anonymous complaint. Feinstein's tweet said she had a complaint from someone who strongly requested anonymity. This strongly implied that she had received a letter directly from someone who was accusing him of a crime like rape.
Now read this:
Describes an incident relayed to someone affiliated with Stanford University who wrote the letter.....
Get that?
Someone wrote a letter that said "I heard that..."
And she took that, redacted all names except Kavanaugh and forwarded it to the FBI, then tweets that she has serious allegations that have been forwarded to the FBI, but can't tell us who or what because they strongly requested anonymity.
If the version circulating on capital hill is true, this is worse than the lie I thought she was telling. She should face serious consequences for slander. She won't, but she should.
I hear that it's in bad taste to allow an accused to face their accuser these days.
*SMH*
Expect a few days of 'grilling' from Democrats about his history of rape and mistreatment of women, and if his desire to rape women has anything to do with his desire to take away their birth control.
lol - yeah, we've gotten rid of such antiquated notions as defendants rights, innocent until proven guilty, and free speech.
And this is considered 'woke'.
War is peace, freedom is slavery. Welcome to the new millennium, looks different, but same as the old one. The further away in time we get from why ordinary citizens risked life for a simple chance at freedom, the more likely they'll weaken those freedoms to the determine the of all.
Said it too many times today, but something something history...doomed to repition...
I blame rape culture.
Not doing any links from my phone here, but on the Daily Mail there is an article saying the cop had a history of making noise complaints about the apartment overhead, including one the night she killed the guy. Can you say premeditated?
The narrative will be changed to she went upstairs to investigate the noise, smelled The Devil's Weed and, well, you know the rest.
Additionally there was some half-eaten food on the table which kinda shoots down the part where she said the place was dark. Who eats in the dark?
Who eats in the dark?
Pot smoking Negros? /sarc
Maybe the room itself was well-lighted but she shot her bullets into the Negroes--harmlessly, she thought, because she mistook their skin for the void of space. See, I should be her union lawyer!
bats and owls.

Also, there's video a neighbor made showing how the doors in the apartment complex are these big heavy metal fire doors with a strong closing mechanism, that would have prevented the "standing ajar" possibility.
The Cop Is Lying. (Big shocker, I know.)
Also, his door had a red, semicircular doormat. Hers had none.
It's not surprising, but should be shocking that an LEO who lives in the building and knows all about the self closing steel doors and knows even a cursory investgation will prove that a lie, but she lied about it anyway.
Many will blame stupidity whereas I think it's her default behavoir. Lies have liekely worked well for her in the past and she fully expects them to be believed and work here.
And so,far, she's right. It's working again just as it has in the past.
They're probably re-writing the narrative as we speak.
Once they're done the story will be that she didn't mistake his apartment for hers, she knew the whole time it was his and she smelled the aroma of The Devil's Weed outside and went in to investigate. Upon being confronted by a pot-smoking negro, who was no doubt listening to jazz music, she did the only sensible thing when confronted by a pot smoking, jazz listening-to negro and defended herself with lethal force. She's a hero for stopping him before he went on a pot fueled rampage, as everyone knows negros who smoke The Devil's Weed are wont to do. /sarc, obivously
A White woman confronted by a Negro hopped up on Reefer? Jeez man, she's lucky she had time to draw her service weapon before he jumped in to rape her.
+1 Where are the white women at?
Sorry, I couldn't pass up an excuse to use that clip.
If I may interject about the Democratic Socialists having a good day in NY, I just think NY is a different animal.
Several of the state assembly members who were defeated were only challenged by someone who is far left. Mainly because they were people who were members of the Independent Democratic Caucus, which voted with the Republicans all the time. But since they were Democrats, they were not going to be challenged by middle-of-the-road Democrats.
In other words, the NY situation is just different because of the setup of NY, because of the fracturing of the NY Democrats, and the fact that nobody "centrist" or "mainstream" in the Democratic party challenged those who were labeled as such. In practice, the Democratic Socialists won't get much play, even in NY.
Thank you.
I said something similar far above. The belief that swing voters in swings states want to be like New York is delusional.
My brother worked on Wall Street for a long time. He said that after a while, you forget that the rest of the country is living in single family homes that would cost millions if they were a condo in New York City. After a while, you forget that it's a big shit hole with great restaurants--and the rest of the world doesn't live that way.
The rest of the country doesn't have New York's concerns and doesn't want to be like New York. I dare anybody to find a politician in a decent area outside of New York state that campaigns on the idea that if they play their cards right, they could be just like New York. Maybe Detroit wishes it was New York City. Maybe somewhere like that--Newark, maybe they wish they were New York.
Where else in America do middle class Americans wish where they are was more like New York?
Where else in America do middle class Americans wish where they are was more like New York?
SF, maybe?
+1
Even California does not want to be like NY.
Just like nobody wants to be like California.
"New York City!?"
"Get a rope."
Same thing that makes all the rest of them tick - power. And the ability to exercise it.

>>>Jeff Bezos calls on Trump to stop demonizing the media.
Bezos = demon *in* the media?
When you ask Salazar about this, she explains that she was shorthanding a more complicated story.
"shorthanding a more complicated story"... I like that. Gonna use that some time here in the future.
If that's all there was to it, it would be reasonable to say that she's been using "my family immigrated from Colombia" as a shorthand for a much more complicated background. That's probably sloppy, but not necessarily dishonest.
Bending... over... backwards to help... her... out....
*ugh*
So, I can start telling people I'm an immigrant too because I'm "shorthanding" a more complicated background? I'm gonna go with that.
From hereon out, I'M AN IMMIGRANT!
The USA was founded by gay African-American gender-fluid non-binary U.N. peacekeepers who favored speech codes, abortion-on-demand, and anti-discrimination laws to keep Christians from being allowed to refuse to make wedding cakes celebrating sodomy
Well, not literally; but this account is shorthand for a much more complicated background.
Man, that Vox article is wearing itself out trying to give Salazar the benefit of the doubt.
Sure, none of this stuff really happened but hey, it's how she feels about it that counts...
And sure, her brother has forcefully denied her characterization of their childhood but hey, that's just his version of events, maaaaan.
"What we do is we then call the business to 1. inform them of the law, and 2. find out what there story is," Stein said. "The law in North Carolina protects against a business charging an unreasonably excessive price."
"Price gouging's illegal because no business should take advantage of people's desperation. When people are at their lowest, that's when we should be reaching out ? to help folks, not take advantage," Stein continued.
End-Point of that plan:
After the fuel and water run out, there won't be any more fuel and water coming in.
I guess the people who get those items first will think it's a really good deal. The people that have no opportunity to get any of it might think otherwise though, just like they do now. You're just switching around who gets the limited resource and making sure fewer people get it.
?The FBI declined to open a criminal investigation into Brett Kavanaugh based on the contents of the letter Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D?Calif.) turned over to agents. This story appears to be a nothingburger.
What was in the letter, again? We need to know if Feinstein has finally turned senile. I mean, a woman in her position hiring a Chinese spy is cause enough for that already.
i'm honestly in shock at all these "libertarians" who get their panties in a bunch because a scooter is parked on a sidewalk and call for city government to manage it. What the hell is going on?
The fake lbertarians are actually gay Lefties. They like nice things and order.
