Democrats and Young People Prefer Socialism to Capitalism, Poll Finds
Republicans, on the other hand, tend to be pro-capitalism and anti-socialism.

Americans increasingly view capitalism in a bad light, to the point where more Democrats and young people seem to favor socialism, according to a new poll.
A Gallup poll released today reveals that just 47 percent of Democratic and Democrat-leaning respondents have a positive view of capitalism, while 57 percent have a positive view of socialism. The socialism figure remained largely unchanged from 2016, when Gallup last conducted the poll. But the capitalism figure represents a 9-point shift from two years ago, when 56 percent of Democrats said they viewed capitalism favorably.
Similarly, 45 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 29 have a positive view of capitalism, compared to 51 percent who said the same about socialism. In 2010, when Gallup first started conducting the survey, 68 percent of people in that age group viewed capitalism favorably, meaning there's been a 23-point shift in just eight years. Though young peoples' views on socialism have fluctuated somewhat in that timespan, 51 percent said they viewed socialism favorably in 2010, an identical figure to 2018.
Not surprisingly, Republicans tend to be pro-capitalism and anti-socialism. Seventy-one percent of Republican or Republican-leaning respondents have a positive view of capitalism, compared to 16 percent who feel the same way about socialism.
Overall, 56 percent of respondents view capitalism favorably, down from 60 percent in 2016. On the other hand, 37 percent have a positive view of socialism, compared to 35 percent two years ago.
It's worth noting that in questioning respondents, Gallup did not "not define 'socialism' or 'capitalism.'" Instead, it simply asked "respondents whether their opinion of each is positive or negative."
Still, it's worth asking: Why are Americans responding positively to socialism? According to Gallup, President Donald Trump might be one reason:
It's possible that the drop in Democrats' positive views of capitalism is related to Donald Trump's presidency. Trump is an enthusiastic capitalist, and his administration's efforts to roll back regulations on business and industry, as well as the tax cut law that is advantageous to businesses and corporations, may have caused Democrats to view the entire capitalist enterprise with less positive eyes.
Plus, democratic socialists like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.)—a 2016 candidate for president who many think may try again in 2020—and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—who took down the powerful Rep. Joe Crowley (D–N.Y.) in a June congressional primary—have made socialism mainstream.
At the same time, it doesn't look like Democrats are ready to fully embrace socialism. As Reason's Christian Britschgi reported last week, a string of populist, left-wing primary candidates lost big in their primaries against more moderate and incumbent contenders.
Also last week, Democratic Maryland gubernatorial nominee Ben Jealous, who's been endorsed by Sanders, had a pointed response when a reporter asked if he's a socialist. "Are you fucking kidding me?" Jealous responded.
Socialism may be on the rise, but at least for now, Americans don't appear ready to go all-in.

Democratic Maryland gubernatorial nominee Ben Jealous, who's been endorsed by Sanders, had a pointed response when a reporter asked if he's a socialist. "Are you fucking kidding me?" Jealous responded
Surname does not check out.
Jealous, much?
I suspect if you asked Yao Ming if he's tall, his response would be the same. Does that suggest Yao Ming doesn't consider himself to be tall? Or that he thinks the answer to the question is so blindingly obvious that it's ridiculous to even ask the question?
Okay, okay, surname does check out.
Socialism appeals to lazy people with no marketable skills who expect the same lifestyle of people with skills who work hard. Capitalism isn't perfect, but it offers far more opportunities to advance and excel than Socialism/Communism does.
I think the main problem is that different people have different ideas about what these words mean. I am sure the poll took great pains to identify the terms to the people being polled.
Chipper MB is exactly right. Young people who do not read news think capitalism is Bernie Madoff. They think socialism is Bernie Sanders, whom they see as kind of cool (he's not). When they grow up and start taking an interest in world events, most of them begin to see that capitalism is small business and free exchange...and socialism is Venezuela.
An example is a friend of mine who is something on the order of 1/1000th Native American. In the 80s, when we were in high school, he was paid around $200/month for two years because his ancestors were driven from "their" land. He was excited as hell about that "free" money as a teenager. Now, in his forties, he's libertarian and says what a travesty those payments were.
"When they grow up and start taking an interest in world events, most of them begin to see that capitalism is small business and free exchange...and socialism is Venezuela."
No, when (if?) they grow up and start paying taxes they might change their minds about socialism.
Many will grow up and won't be making enough money to pay taxes. They will then blame everyone but themselves, just as they are being trained to do.
> Many will grow up and won't be making enough money to pay taxes. They will then blame everyone but themselves, just as they are being trained to do.
That is partially true. The white ones will start to be called racists by the younger progressives, despite having marched and sympathized with the left on their campuses. That has a nasty habit of making people bitter and driving them to the other side. When some young progressive piece of shit calls someone's kids racists, that is even more likely to drive them into the arms of libertarians and conservatives. People don't like having some know-nothing leftist tell them that their kid only got straight As because of his or her "white privilege."
"White privilege" is a mythical advantage invented by the left to explain away their complete destruction of black neighborhoods with welfare programs. It can't possibly be the programs that caused it. After all, their professors told them those programs work and they paid $200,000 for their education so they can't be wrong. No, it must be "white privilege." Uh huh.
Or to people who don't want to grow up. I live with one of those 32yo lefty guys...
Freedom is the greatest invention in the history of the world, and yet these progs still want to be like the USSR.
"Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself."
? Milton Friedman
Right, but offered only for values of "freedom itself," which exclude any right to national self-government.
Or, put another way, deviate from Friedman's market ideology, and you become an enemy of "freedom itself."
If you are a fan of Friedman, you might think that's a valid summary, but you ought to at least notice the question begging that's built in.
This would be the Friedman who had an unshakeable faith in central banks and believed monetary bubbles were the solution to market contractions. And who supported the New Deal and WPA while working for the FDR administration and later went on to help formulate the modern income tax withholding system.
You might want to spend 3 seconds looking up the name of the person you're going to babble about next time. You'll still end up looking like a fucking moron because you are and can't help it. But at least you won't have your foot down your own throat.
So, to question begging, add incivility, subject changing, and ad hominems, and the argument improves?
Yes, That Milton Friedman. Just as you can say many things about John Stossel in his early years of working as a reporter, it is easy to misrepresent someone who has lived a long time.
If you care to know more about Milton Friedman, you should distinguish between beliefs he had at the end of his life and decisions he made which he regrets. For example, one of the things he is on record saying he regrets most is his involvement of the income tax withholding system.
Friedman opposed the central bank and the new deal (at least in his intellectual prime and later years) and favored rule based as opposed to discretionary monetary policy as the solution to the business cycle.
This, Unless you manage to go your whole life as a worthless lazy piece of crap like Bernie, socialism loses it's appeal after a few mangled paychecks.
They don't want the same lifestyle since it's a lifestyle centered around work. They want the same material wealth.
Not necessarily. They might be happy with less material wealth as long as other people (especially those frat-boys a-holes who went into finance!) didn't make them feel bad by having so much more. Tall poppies aren't going to cut themselves down to size, you know.
hey! I was a nerd and not a frat boy 😛
Then again it didnt take me long to switch to IT
hey! I was a nerd and not a frat boy 😛
Then again it didnt take me long to switch to IT
See, that's what I don't get: feeling bad because others have so much more. You have to look at yourself to determine happiness/life satisfaction.
I used to rent an attic apartment of a smallish house on the riverfront. The house next door was a McMansion with a dock. One summer evening, my ex-GF and I heard the neighbors arguing. "Work, work, work! All I ever do is work! I never get to enjoy anything!" The man was yelling to his wife. I wasn't at all envious.
People tend to assume that those who drive older cars or maybe even bike to work, must be pitiable. Maybe they don't want to have a car payment that rivals their monthly mortgage. Maybe the guy who goes fishing enjoys that more than the guy who travels to Paris or wherever. You can't assume things about people. Most of us are telepathic.
Most of us are NOT telepathic.
Okay, I admit I am envious of commenters on sites that have comment sections with edit buttons.
Sounds like this is a... wedge issue for you, Antilles.
Actually, I took my name from Raymus Antilles, the captain of Princess Leia's rebel blockade runner who Vader choked to death. Yeah, I'm a nerd.
Luke is still banging her corpse, right?
Nerd? Oh, come on, who doesn't love Raymus?
a nerd would have chosen some simple shit like Luke or Han.
IOW you're not a nerd?
*chokes rebel "What have you done with the plans? Gary here never gets to see his daughter because of people like you!"
Add a lousy education, a shambling rural community, and bigotry, and you have a handy recipe for the Trump base.
Is your community shamblin, now Artie? It's the syph, isn't it. You gave it to your sister dad when he was buggerin' you like he does the livestock and he spread it to that cum-dumpster you call 'mom', and, by and by, ever'one got their piece at church, just like always, and now your whole fam--community is stumpin, around like a bunch of gap toothed zombies, just waitin' for their checks so they can get a bit more meth.
But you go ahead and clean yourself off and pretend to be as good as them city-folk you worship.
Hick.
Lol
Kkklinger would have a sister-dad...
Stalin had a skill and he excelled in the fairest system of peace ever invented.*
*Just ask any teacher who owns a Stalin shirt.
And Stalin lived in the palaces and enjoyed the lifestyle once reserved for czars over there. Communist leaders are the world's biggest hypocrites. Economic equality, meaning equalized poverty is for everyone else. They make sure they have a dachas, and chauffeurs, and their own private cook/baker. The proletariat can stand in a breadline and share a bathroom with their neighbors: officials have much more important things to do with their time.
That wasn't just true of Russia either. Do you think Maduro has no access to toilet paper? Do you think Kim ever misses a meal?
Stalin lived in the Kremlin in Moscow, and a villa in Sochi for his holidays. The Czar's palace was in Petersburg, where Stalin never lived. By the way, I think most heads of state have access to toilet paper.
I hear graveyards are pretty peaceful.
Trump is an enthusiastic capitalist, and his administration's efforts to roll back regulations on business and industry, as well as the tax cut law that is advantageous to businesses and corporations
Raising taxes on businesses and consumers, denying entry to people who want to work here, forbidding Americans from doing business with people in certain countries. So market. Very capitalism.
Very American since those things are all in the Constitution.
Can we exchange the people who want to work here with the Democrat voters who don't want to work? It would be a win-win.
I see: 47% of democrats are racist.
The other 53% are too, but it's "in their best interest".
Get them to define Socialism though. Or Capitalism for that matter. Capitalism is just freedom, Socialism is not.
"Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself."
? Milton Friedman
These polls are garbage. There are varied reasons why people might respond this way that don't include them actually embracing the nationalization of industry.
way that don't include them actually embracing the nationalization of industry.
Probably because "young people" don't really know much about Socialism.
Kids these days define socialism as capitalism coupled with forced redistribution. They wouldn't put it in those terms, but that's what they're picturing when they use the word.
Juice, that strikes me as nearly insightful. Just add that young people have good reason to understand that capitalism, while excellent at enlarging the size of the pie, has utterly bungled distribution of the pie.
Trump trumpets improvements in the economy, media quote Trump (approvingly!!), but most young folks see zero increase in wages which are already far too low. Educated young people might start approving of capitalism as soon they can at least afford to pay off student loans, and rent a studio apartment in a location that offers any employment prospects at all. Until then, expect capitalism's reputation to continue in decline.
Given the crap deal American capitalism has dealt them, I'm amazed that millennials remain docile.
Capitalism blew up the college loan bubble in the wake of the subprime mortgage bubble by forcing the government to enter the lending industry and make lending decisions based on politics. Naughty capitalism! Now my undergrad degree in general studies can't get me a 6 figure job so I can live in a loft in Manhattan with no roommates! MARKET FAILURE!
American capitalism didn't deal them crap. They did it to themselves.
The young person who went 20 grand in debt on a 2 year trade school to be a welder or a millwright or a diesel mechanic has no problem paying their student loans.
The young person who went 100 grand in debt to get a masters degree in gender studies has a really big problem. And it is mostly his fault.
I say mostly his fault because it wouldn't have happened if colleges didn't offer so many frivolous courses of study. And if Bernie has his way, free college for all, the frivolous courses will proliferate.
Keep your eye on the ball. The problem is that capitalism is failing politically, despite any virtues it might have otherwise. Nothing in your comment addresses the problem. Reiterating free market ideology to people whom the free market has left in a pickle they can't get out of is not a political winner. Capitalism is either going to fix its American distribution problem, or it is going to be extensively modified by force.
Presumably you like capitalism. You ought to get busy with ideas to fix the distribution problem. For starters, you need to acknowledge that the problem exists. Blaming folks who capitalism is making poorer is not identifying the problem, it's exacerbating the problem.
They know all there is to know about Socialism and its perfect goodness. Just ask any teacher in government.
^ This.
Instead of asking people how they emote when they hear certain words, we should ask people whether they want industries to be owned and operated by the government, whether they want economic decisions to be made by a central planning bureau or whether they want economic decisions to be primarily made by individuals for themselves.
As it is, most "left wingers" hear the word "Capitalism" as "Corporate-Oligarchic Dictatorship" while most "right-wingers" hear "Socialism" as "Death Camps."
Asking people how they generically feel about these two words without further definition tells you nothing at all, really.
And exactly how do you think "Medicare for All" will poll? Even if you put the bill in front of them, how many are running screaming from 32.6TT?
This isn't an issue of semantics; it's an issue of historic and economic ignorance that is significantly willful.
I grant that it isn't entirely an issue of semantics. But it has been a very long time since I've heard someone say "I'm a Socialist, and what I mean by that is that I think government should own the means of production and centrally manage the economy."
But I frequently hear "I'm a socialist, by which I mean that we as a society should have a government-administered system for taking care of people victimized by circumstance."
And from my perspective, living in probably the farthest-left leaning area of the entire country, this latter attitude has arisen as the new definition of the word because almost no one thinks state ownership of the means of production is a good idea. It's a faction that's about as large and influential as Neo-Nazis.
So "economic ignorance" is definitely a major problem in this country, but it extends to not understanding what the word "Socialism" means, either.
"I don't think the government should own the means of production" and "Health care is a right" are two concepts that are simply mutually exclusive. Now tell me honestly which one of those two they will pick when forced to actually choose. Then tell me again that no one thinks that state ownership is a good idea.
NA Skippy, you seem to prefer facts you can surmise from ideology to the ones you could discover by looking around. Maybe you should try it the other way.
This coming from the raging moron with the puppetry degree who thinks Milton Friedman was an anarchist.
Does it even matter whether or not they know the textbook definition of socialism?
When push comes to shove, they want forced resource allocation determined by a cadre of "experts" who claim to represent the popular/majority will.
The "greedy" should sacrifice for the greater (collective) "good" - it's simply a moral imperative.
Anyone unwilling to do so voluntarily is necessarily evil, therefore law must compel the evil and unwilling.
Even if that's not their idea of socialism, and even if they profess objection to some tenets individually, they'll still go for it over freedom - since freedom allows for evil and bad intentions.
They are fundamentally misanthropic.
I agree with your analysis, mostly. (I don't think they're necessarily so trusting of experts as opposed to popular sentiment.) It doesn't really matter exactly what they mean by socialism or capitalism; the masses still have an approximate idea from which we can gather the feeling they're trying to give the poll taker. & the trend doesn't look good.
Correct.
And whether you call it "experts" or "popular sentiment" it is ultimately "The Good" - as delivered to them through gospel.
But if progressives believe in anything, this they believe in most of all: masters
Want to counter that tendency? Get capitalists to do something about their massive failure to deliver viable resource allocation to young adults. Until then, expect forced re-allocation by government to look better and better to more and more people.
There is not a damn thing reiteration of free market ideology can do to counter that trend. So if reiteration is the best corrective capitalism has to offer, then capitalism is going to fail. It's headed that way now.
Get capitalists to do something about their massive failure to deliver viable resource allocation to young adults.
Nobody gives a fuck about the fact that you're an unemployable fuckstain kiddo. That's your fault not society's or capitalism.
At least you aren't reiterating free market ideology. Maybe you are smarter than the tone of your comments suggests.
The flip side of that is progs have designed a HS diploma to keep kids in school too long - they get little to no work ethic at a vital time. We shouldn't have 1870 style child labor, but we shouldn't have to "deliver resources" in society either - a 17 year old should be working/just out of trade school, or off to college. For those who do go to college, note the progs again steal valuable time by arranging curriculum to favor the dreaded "5 year plan" in far too many instances. What's the cumulative effect of 3 extra working years on the front end of a young persons life on investments? Probably a half million in net worth never realized.
It's a faction that's about as large and influential as Neo-Nazis.
Let me know when the Neo-Nazis are chairing university departments and running mainstream publications you fucking lying piece of shit.
Under socialism, one aspires to pick the pocket of their neighbor while hiding behind a committee. Under communism, that man hopes the committee doesn't find him at home.
FTFY
I agree that these kinds of polls are garbage, that don't define terms.
Ask 10 people what socialism means, and you will get 10 different responses.
Mostly, though, people on the right think of Venezuela or the USSR when they think of socialism, while people on the left think of Norway or Denmark.
Two very different examples.
"when they think of socialism, while people on the left think of Norway or Denmark"
So that excuses them?
Different, but not so different that a trend can't be discerned from them.
So, people on the left are stupid and don't understand that Denmark has greater economic freedom and fully embraces capitalism. Because feelz. Okay got it.
Yeah crypto-communists like you have done a great job muddying the waters to soft peddle your ideology. But the point of the matter is that they want much larger and more intrusive government setting the terms of economic exchange.
The problem is the policies they pursue lead to Venezuela, not to Denmark, so it's hard to see this justifying a special dispensation.
I think the poll was to see what the visceral reactions to the capitalism vs. socialism. There was no expectation of any rational consideration of what they actually mean. "Young people" are notoriously ignorant of reality while simultaneously believing they already know everything they need to know. No comment on "Democrats".
This commenter puts the blame squarely on you, the public school system.
Fuck, I've been outed. Fist, how did you know I was the incarnation of the public school system?
I wanna have a word with you about natural vs. FieldTurf, Public School System!
As long as there is a Public School System, there will be synthetic turf.
Synthetic (field) turf is an indulgence of the bourgeoisie, and has no place in a proper socialist society. It is for wreckers and kulaks.
Socialist man plays on the people's surface, astroturf - concrete slabs covered by a relatively thin layer of carpet.
And the grape flavored mentholated pencils.
Prolly the smell.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence when you're comparing apples and oranges. The image on the outside of the package are just a serving suggestion, not a literal representation of what's inside the package.
You look around at "capitalism" such as we have here and you can see the warts - the crony capitalists, the unfair leverage of money and power, the suffering of the bent and broken human cogs that don't fit into the capitalist machinery - and decide that capitalism isn't the answer to all life's problems. But if you look at the theory of socialism, why, it's rainbows and unicorns and free ponies for everybody!
Ask these people who say they prefer socialism why they're not packing their shit up and moving to Venezuela. Because that's the warts-and-all of socialism, where they tell tales of capitalist societies where the streets are paved with gold, hamburgers grow on trees and everybody gets a new car on their 16th birthday.
Wart of capitalism: It produces enough wealth that eventually you're bound to accumulate several layabouts who take it upon themselves to police the sposdas.
i moooooved here from Caaanadaaaa and they think I'm slooow, eh?
best.episode.evah.
>>>have made socialism mainstream
no, they've mainstreamed lies
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez?who took down the powerful Rep. Joe Crowley (D?N.Y.) in a June congressional primary
In another couple months and she'll have defeated seven Joe Crowleys with one blow!
Alright now everyone is wondering why I am giggling uncontrollably. It's the mushrooms, but I also like your comment.
It's the future of the party.
Trump is an enthusiastic capitalist, and his administration's efforts to roll back regulations on business and industry
"Vandals at the EPA".
If there were a federal agency that desperately needed vandals...
Didn't the Romans salt Carthage centuries before the Vandals ever got there? There's your real EPA recruiting fair, people. You're welcome.
Fake News! The Romans never salted Carthage.
74% of Likely U.S. Voters prefer a free market economic system over a socialist system.
And it has been this way for a long, long time.
Use the right terms and you get a more honest result.
Spend 12 years being indoctrinated by government schools, someone find the heavy hand of government preferable to the alternative.
Young people also dont know what Socialism means. They have no idea that it means that government controls the means of production and what "means of production" actually is.
Furthermore, they tend to know history so they have no idea how evil Socialism is. Literally hundreds of millions of people have been killed in the name of Socialism.
*not know history...
Technically, it's "the community" that controls the means of production and benefits from it. In practice, that means government. Was it Hillary Clinton that said "government" is the things we do together?
To all those who "Democrats and young people seem to favor socialism, according to a new poll."
FUCK YOU.
FUCK YOU.
FUCK OFF AND DIE IN A FIRE.
SLOWLY.
FUCK YOU, YOUR MOTHER AND THE HORSE YOU RODE IN ON.
Idk man, one vague, irrelevant, misleading poll is just vague, irrelevant, and misleading. Fuck the poll.
There will be a short pause before the Libertarian Moment.
This is nothing for us libertarians to get upset about. In fact, democratic socialism is largely compatible with Koch / Reason libertarianism. Both ideologies want to #AbolishICE and get the Putin Puppet regime out of office ASAP. With so much common ground on so many important issues, we shouldn't obsess over minor differences like minimum wage laws.
#LibertariansForOcasioCortez
Gonna give that a D+ for trolling. Phoning it in.
Solid A
FUCK YOU.
See Above.
Stop the presses everyone
Socialism is a scam where basically you promise people stuff in order to convince them to vote for you, and then you rise to power and then sit back and watch as the people labor and massacre beneath you. It is actually a delusion of grandeur - thinking you're god. I write about this on my blog, in an article entitled "The Atheist Delusion". However the prognosis is pretty good, because basically these people are vying before rising to power and thereby purging and neutralizing each other. #sorryucantwin #thereisonlyroom41
It's also "possible" that when you actually look at the questions asked in this poll, you will discover that the vast majority of favorable respondents don't really know what Socialism is. In fact, it's more than "possible" - it's a lead pipe cinch. Several studies have already confirmed this very point.
Assuming this is a representative sample of respondents (like with the 2016 election polls, right?), then it should be broken down a bit into specific questions - minimum wage, health care, et cetera.
I get the feeling that a lot of Democrats don't know the difference between the classical definition of socialism, and a social welfare state.
Except when they are not. *Cough* Tariffs! *Cough*
What one can get from polls is that most people are fucking liars. Republicans prefer economic Fascism and getting rid of brown people (ah, thank you, Laura!), so they lie about liking capitalism, while Democrats have no idea how Socialism is supposed to work plus don't expect latte-drinking millenials to eschew their iPhones and rad rags.
Thankfully Dumb Mexican who is ignorant of the terms Republican Democrat Fascism Socialism and Capitalism is here to clear everything up for us.
Articles that do nothing other that fling labels around are useless - as are polls with undefined terms. Finally, equating "socialism" and "democratic socialism" is a logical fallacy.
I wonder what the percentages would be if you polled the Reason staff....
Capitalism based on greed brings us disposable and value engineered products that destroy our environment while making capitalists rich. Those unwilling to greedily destroy, live in poverty and disease. Any regulation occurs by greedy competitors.
Socialism based on abdicating responsibility can be whatever those in power say. Regulators are controlled by those in power potentially resulting in no opportunity or motivation for progress.
When a poll asks me which is my choice I ask why there aren't more alternatives.
When a poll asks me which is my choice I ask why there aren't more alternatives.
I'm guessing that's rarely a problem for you since pollsters usually only consult with mentally competent adults.
In all truth, I think most people prefer, or would at least tolerate varying degrees of a mixed economy... AKA what we have now.
Some people might draw the line at have social security for old people, others might want universal healthcare. And everything in between.
I personally would be glad to be rid of it all, but if we're going to have any of it it definitely needs to be trimmed waaay back from where it is, AND structured differently so as to incentivize good behavior. PLUS if we are ever able to actually cut it back, that's one more step towards convincing people to do away with it all together after they see the cuts didn't end the world.
Know that those in power are doling and will do anything to keep it that way. They prefer anonymity.
Our political leaders are vying for scraps from their table.
Our privacy is gone.
Our free speech is gone.
Due process is gone.
The foundation of civilization, have been eroded and eliminated to enable corruption at all levels.
But we have the technology to turn it all around. By effortlessly recording everything we witness everywhere we go and combining that with the criminalization of lying.
But do we still have the will and the virtue to speak truth to power, or has the critical mass become too complacent and resigned to our decline to anarchy?
From the article:
"Also last week, Democratic Maryland gubernatorial nominee Ben Jealous, who's been endorsed by Sanders, had a pointed response when a reporter asked if he's a socialist. "Are you fucking kidding me?" Jealous responded."
Doubt that he understood the question. Jealous is left of Sanders.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMxTEZ7JizI
"Poll finds that young people and an increasing number of Democrats are economically illiterate."
The only good communist is a dead communist.
Here's a fun activity to try with woke college student socialistas, especially at "elite" schools (and probalbly there on someone else's money). Tell them that in the name of solidarity and equality exam scores and final grades will be pooled, and all students will get an equal share. Then sit back and enjoy the sudden resurgence of personal capitalism.
I'd be much more interested in a poll that elucidated the principles and policies of each economic system. It would also be more useful to consider the real debate and contest to be between capitalism and democratic socialism / welfarism. Those are the real options facing us, full-blown socialism is dead in the water.
I suspect that if you just brute force presented the principles each system necessitates (property rights, coercion, etc.) then capitalism would come out ahead in every demographic, although I have been impressed by a number of my peers fully owning up to the measures required by social democratic leaning (mainly reduced liberty, collectivism, and an increase in police coercion).
All the hyperventilating about socialism on here and no time spent on asking about capitalism. In reality, the poll was one on sentiment towards socialism vs corporatism as there is no such thing as 'capitalism' in the dictionary sense in the US.
Millennials don't even know what socialism is.
I don't suppose anyone else is going to be rude enough to note the change in attitude towards capitalism and socialism is concurrent with our change in demographics? Ok, I will.
Thank you open borders lobby!
It's all so unfair.
Nonsense article about a nonsense poll. Every person has a unique concept of the words socialism and capitalism
They prefer their *utopian* *fantasy* of what they think socialism is. If forced to live in a true socialist system they'd quickly experience "Be careful what you wish for---because you just might get it."
"Capitalism" is a dirty filthy Marxist term. It's "Free Market".
First things first. Capitalism is a word invented by Communists. "Eliminating the inequalities of Capitalism...." Sounds so much better than ".... we want to eliminate the free exchange of goods, money and ideas in exchange for complete control by the state...."
First things first. Capitalism is a word invented by Communists. "Eliminating the inequalities of Capitalism...." Sounds so much better than ".... we want to eliminate the free exchange of goods, money and ideas in exchange for complete control by the state...."
This is a direct result of the fact that our schools provide no education in the free market to our children. Trigonometry and foreign language are mandatory, but when it comes to understanding how our economy functions, the kids get not a word. The differences between government-controlled economies and the free market is never discussed, so it's no surprise that our people are easy prey to political hacks. The hacks never got schooled either. Given America's success with a free market economy, and the fact that our lives are woven through with its benefit, the ignorance about how our system works is pathetic.
