Trump's Policy of Separating Immigrant Families Makes for a Contentious Father's Day: Reason Roundup
Plus: More evidence emerges that Harvard University discriminates against Asians.

Critics of the Trump administration policy of separating children who enter the country illegally from their families continued to blast Republicans for failing to curtail this draconian measure. Actor John Legend tweeted "fuck you" at House Speaker Paul Ryan, who had posted a "Happy Father's Day" message on social media.
Seriously, fuck you. Reunite the families at the border and we can talk about father's day. https://t.co/bbG0gVqfzq

First Lady Melania Trump released a statement saying that she hates seeing children separated from their families and "hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform. She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart." This remark drew a "fuck you" from Kathy Griffin (of course). Former First Lady Laura Bush also weighed in.
But according to President Trump, the whole mess is Democrats' fault, since they won't work with Republicans to pass new immigration legislation. "This is why we need more Republicans elected in November!" the president tweeted.
Between April 19 and May 31, at least 2,000 children were separated from their parents at the border. Contrary to what Attorney General Jeff Sessions and other Trump officials have claimed, this policy is not required by the law, according to the Volokh Conspiracy's Ilya Somin:
The Trump administration claims that their policy is required by the 1997 Flores court settlement. But that settlement in no way mandates family separation and detention of children away from their parents. To the contrary, it instructs federal officials to "place each detained minor in the least restrictive setting appropriate" and to release them to the custody of family or guardians "without unnecessary delay." The settlement also mandates that federal immigration officials must "treat, all minors in its custody with dignity, respect and special concern for their particular vulnerability as minors." Detaining children under harsh conditions, separated from their parents, is pretty obviously not "the least restrictive setting" possible, and it most definitely doesn't qualify as treating children with "dignity, respect and special concern for their particular vulnerability."
Sen. Susasn Collins (R–Maine) described the policy as traumatizing for the children and inconsistent with American values on CBS's Face the Nation on Sunday. Congressional Republicans have expressed willingness to axe this "zero tolerance" approach, but only in exchange for increased funding for border security, an end to the diversity visa lottery, and several other things.
Meanwhile, Breitbart thinks it was wrong to describe the children as being kept in cages—rather, they are being held in "chain-link holding areas."

Harvard University admissions officials consistently gave Asian American applicants low marks in the subjective "personality" category—a tactic that concealed the university's efforts to discriminate against Asians in order to increase the number of black and Hispanic students admitted.
That's according to documents that were publicly revealed last week as part of a lawsuit against Harvard over its race-conscious admissions policies. (I previously wrote about the lawsuit here.)
Asian American applicants had higher standardized test scores, and more extracurricular activities, than other applicants, and alumni officials who interviewed them rated them among the highest applicants. But admissions officials who did not interview the applicants still found something in their applications that supposedly merited low marks on personality.
"It turns out that the suspicions of Asian-American alumni, students and applicants were right all along," Students for Fair Admissions, the group suing Harvard, said in a court document. "Harvard today engages in the same kind of discrimination and stereotyping that it used to justify quotas on Jewish applicants in the 1920s and 1930s."
Blogger Stephen Hsu has a useful breakdown of the info here. Long story short: when one looks at just the "fair" applicant pool—i.e., the applicant pool that doesn't include athletes and legacy admissions—it seems quite obvious that Asians are discriminated against.
How do we know @Harvard is lying about its racist admissions policies against Asian-Americans? Because it won't release its own internal reviews from 2013 showing discrimination.
Release the information Harvard. What are you hiding?
Oh, and do you like my personality traits? https://t.co/LSgHBMl5Bh

You probably had him at fuck you.
Hello.
Fuck you!
Progressive elegance.
Gee, I wonder if they'd ever have the balls to say that to Reid or Obama or Pelosi?
Trump conservatives... the model of dignity and grace.
If an arbitrary holiday won't get them to reconsider, I struggle to think what will.
Yelling at Paul Ryan over something that Trump is doing is....something other than rational.
They're trying to win back the House so of course they need to blame Ryan. You don't actually think these people know what they're talking about, right?
"Meanwhile, Breitbart thinks it was wrong to describe the children as being kept in cages?rather, they are being held in "chain-link holding areas.""
Do they at least wrap the chain links in terry cloth? Harry Harlow way back in the 1950s (see http://pages.uoregon.edu/adopt.....lowMLE.htm ) showed that baby monkeys do much better when the milk-giving dummy-monkey-mom-doll is wire mesh wrapped in soft terry cloth as opposed to bare wire or wood. So we've had proof for a long-long time that baby mammals NEED soft snuggles.
Now here in 2018 I read that the appointed USA-taxpayer-paid appointed fake-moms and dads who are paid with your tax money to take care of these infants and children, are forbidden to touch or snuggle the kids. (Child abuse fears of course). What happened to what we learned in the 1950s? When these babies are given milk, can they at least snuggle a cloth-wrapped fake "mommy" instead of bare wire mesh? Or is The Donald the reincarnation of NAZI Dr. Josef Mengele?
Inquiring minds want to know!!!!
Just for clarity?
Science, common sense, and plain decency all tell us that this is a terrible thing to do to children and babies. This WILL result in mental illness and criminality upticks among the illegal humans, we KNOW this for a fact! We also know that no matter HOW many trillions of dollars we spend on walls and border guards, many of them WILL be back here in the USA, legally or illegally! So my tax dollars go to fund Trump-Mengele experiments, with the horrible results already pre-known, for the USA as well as Mexico.
Is there any wonder that some people in Latin America hate gringos?
Well, those problems will have to be addressed by the countries they get deported to, right?
Right?
'A) Tit-for-tat is a simple principle in human affairs. You shit on them, they recall who you are, and, when given a chance, they shit right back on you.
'B) Unless given a near-perfect border wall, AND near-perfect tracking of exactly WHICH babies have been subjected to the Trump-Mengele experiments, some of them WILL be back here, legally or illegally, with needlessly-induced mental problems. Then, if we want to make that Mexico's problems, we'll have to enslave Mexican shrinks, or engage in repeated rounds of these cruel, draconian border-control experiments, and experience never-ending blow-back.
Karma can be hell on Earth!
But the results of the seeds that we are planting now won't be harvested till 15, 20, 25 years or so, as far as the uptick in mental illness goes. Trump doesn't give a shit; he's too preoccupied with throwing out red meat to the illegal-humans haters NOW, to give a shit about the longer-term future!
I wish they hated us enough to stay in their own countries..
I guess the USA being a country of racists doesn't matter enough to them.
"Wrapped in soft terry cloth as opposed to barbed wire or wood?" Tell me something, SQRLS, why was you hurting the poor defenseless babby munkeys with the barbed wire? Babby munkeys don't like being poked with sharp metal barbs.
I was hungry for monkey meat, and also had an uncontrollable urge to spank baby monkeys!!!
My uncontrollable urges are purely the results of biochemicals in my brain; I am basically a helpless bag of biochemicals afloat, like flotsam, and endlessly subjected to the arbitrary whims of the winds and waves. Free will is an utter fiction, of course... So you can NOT hold me accountable in ANY way, till the biochemists snag me and inject the perfectly correct, therapeutic biochemicals into my flotsam-bag!

Oh My: Thousands Of Illegal Aliens Arrested For Violent Crimes Were Granted DACA Protections
Yet, the tricky thing here is that arrests alone don't bar someone from being enrolled in the program, only convictions. Yet, you'd think that someone arrested for murder, child porn, assault, battery, or rape wouldn't get green lit by the system. Apparently, even on those vicious crimes, it's possible for illegals to be shielded from deportation.
Due process, what a horrible thing, amirite?
Can we hold off enrolling until after the trial?
Why? Again, until convicted, they aren't actually legally guilty of anything.
But by all means, keep them flagged for immediate withdrawal from the program once the trial is complete, should they be found guilty.
They're actively committing a crime by being in the USA illegally and remaining here.
Those things are not actually crimes.
I disagree.
Yes, they are crimes.
US Code: Immigration
Your link does not include anything about "being in the USA illegally and remaining here" except for immigrants with a final order of removal. Nice try I guess.
And you have no link at all after making your assertion. Get to work and start proving it.

Meh. There's a loooooooong line of people who aren't tied up in court cases, and I find it hard not to think they should get first consideration.

'Details MATTER': Gabriel Malor DISMANTLES the spin surrounding the border situation
Does "Why didn't you complain earlier" really count as a response?
"I didn't know about it then. Now I do."
Does it actually matter why the media is reporting on it now when they failed to do so before? Is the question of the media's motivation in reporting it actually material, in your mind, to the question of whether the activity they are reporting on is moral?
That seems like a good way to let the media drive your positions on what counts as moral.
Or a good way to know the people screaming it is immoral really don't care.
The motivation is almost assuredly tribal what-about-ism on both sides.
This thing is horrible... Yeah, but what about that thing over there? It's horrible too!
There is literally an immediate solution:
1) All illegals stop crossing the US border illegally.
2) All illegals currently in custody, waive the extradition hearing and agree to go back to Mexico and routes more South.
What's the solution for the ones who aren't crossing the border illegally and instead are presenting themselves at a port of entry and claiming asylum?
Asylum for what?
If its not a claim of asylum that only the USA can fix, then get in line.
I'm sure they would love to start following your arbitrary and emotional advice. Perhaps you could start a newsletter.
You're the one catering to emotion. I asked what are asylum seekers running from and need America for?
Politics? They voted in tyrants to take power and probably voted for more free shit.
Religion? They allowed tyrants to take power and probably voted for more free religious shit.
How the hell do you vote for free religious shit?
And on top of that, why do you assume everyone votes? A lot of people live under dictatorships.
Geez, lc, you're starting to lose it. I don't like to say "Partisan Hack", but maybe we should start calling you "Red John."
Which sock are you again?
You get free religious shit when you allow your country to be a Theocracy, like Vatican City.
The Catholics love to vote in politicians that get them free religious shit.
Pointing out that you're wrong isn't "catering to emotion." Your question is irrelevant. It doesn't matter why they're claiming asylum.
"It doesn't matter why they're claiming asylum."
???
It doesn't?
Pretty sure the actual law in question says it does matter, and that predates both the current and preceding administrations.
More evidence that you have zero idea what you are talking about.
Even the US Government requires information on WHY people are seeking asylum.
USCIS asylum application information
What is the solution for the people presenting themselves at a port and claiming asylum?
Assuming they don't just get let in, they need to be held somewhere under some form of supervision. They will be detained in that they can't leave the facility unless being deported.
So, we can:
-Put everyone together. Adults and children alike.
-Separate them by gender, but not age. Females here, males there.
-Separate by age - adults here, juveniles there.
-Submit the asylum application for processing and immediately deport them to their country of origin with instructions on how to check the status of their application.
Do you have another way to handle this?
What thing over where?
We're talking about this thing here--the thing you're complaining about. The thing you only just started complaining about even though it's been going on for years that people have tried to get into the media before now but then you all said that it was fine. That it was good even, that Obama was helping these children.
That's not fucking whataboutism--that's an accepted policy suddenly becoming a crime when the guy doing it no longer has a D behind his name.
It does, because now that people have suddenly become upset with the problem the solution is simple: a different TOP MAN.
Rather than acknowledging that it's the government that is the problem, they are framing it as "we just have the wrong TOP MAN".
Woketarians are playing the same game. But, let's stop pretending like they care about shrinking government. They just want the right TOP MAN too
Exactly. If the "Blue Wave" really does come ashore and the Congress somehow impeaches and removes Trump (an unlikely event I suspect but you never know), Hollywood and most of the other shouters will swiftly lose interest in teh poor immigrant children.
Just like they all pretending like Obama's election somehow ended foreign conflicts
You mean giving a Nobel Peace Prize does not prevent a socialist from bombing people?
The lefties will be too busy defending themselves from armed patriots attempting to water the Tree of Liberty.
It's not like Reason wasn't complaining before, anyway. They have a long history of criticizing Obama admin immigration policies.
Shikha, is that you?
Does it actually matter why the media is reporting on it now when they failed to do so before? Is the question of the media's motivation in reporting it actually material, in your mind, to the question of whether the activity they are reporting on is moral?
Yes. It's a separate issue from whether these actions should be stopped. It is a very valid question to ask why they kept this same story of atrocities silent under a different administration. It's a very important question why the media does not report horrible acts happening under our country.
Because it means that this was happening for years, known but suppressed, likely for pure political partisanship. Their war reporting is similar, in that atrocities are swept under the rug to support those in power they like. This is not a healthy press.
But according to President Trump, the whole mess is Democrats' fault, since they won't work with Republicans to pass new immigration legislation.
Reason did praise briefly the president for throwing the issue back to Congress where it belongs.
Critics of the Trump administration policy of separating children who enter the country illegally from their families continued to blast Republicans for failing to curtail this draconian measure.
The only "reasonable" thing to do is stop enforcing immigration and preventing illegals from entering the USA because some illegals are being separated from their kids. NOT!
These people will support other criminals in US prisons having their kids in prison to prevent the family from being separated.
Any TDS will do.
No human being is illegal. Please refer to them as undocumented.
Nope.
I shall call them "Illegal immigrants", like I call him "Mini-Me".
It's not their humanity that's being called illegal, it's their immigration status.

This is either a slam on his singing or a big compliment to his acting.
Or a perfectly accurate comment as to his general notoriety for whatever it is that he does.

"Many coastal properties may be flooded out by 2045, climate report warns"

"Currently, the real estate market largely doesn't account for the near- and medium-term risk, which means a lot of coastal property is effectively overvalued," said Kristina Dahl, senior climate scientist for the Union of Concerned Scientists and a co-author of the new report. Meh. They all get government subsidized flood insurance and the gov. keeps rebuilding in flood plains and low-lying coastal areas.
The only skin anybody has in the game are the bureaucrats and builders feeding off the cycle of cash.
When I heard the report, it said something like 300,000 properties are expected to be distressed if not lost due to increased flooding over the next 30 yrs. and I wondered how many of those 300,000 were properties that were 'distressed if not lost' over the last 30 yrs.
OMG, that Government flood insurance is the worse. It literally removes most of the moral hazard to where you build your home and allows people to build in locations that will have a disaster sooner than later.

In regards to discriminating against Asian college applicants, I noticed that the University of Chicago is joining a growing list of universities that are no longer requiring ACT/SAT scores for new applicants.
U. of C. leaders have long wanted to increase diversity on campus and said they hoped a test-optional policy, at minimum, will prevent students from assuming that anything less than an outstanding test score automatically takes them out of the running.

These countries are fighting back, drawing up retaliatory measures that go after products in Mr. Trump's political base. China's response was swift on Friday, focusing on $50 billion worth of American goods including beef, poultry, tobacco and cars.
It's important to differentiate between tariffs that are already happening and mere threats--they're all part of the "trade war" according to this story, I guess, but there's an important difference between threats and tariffs. It's like the difference between North Korea threatening to hit us with an ICBM and actually hitting us with an ICBM.
Did China really "strike back"?
If the heathen Chinee get wind of the discrimination by Harvard against Asians, there will be hell to pay.
The president gave an interview to Fox's Doocy last week and kept stating that China takes $800 billion a year from the U.S. as part of the trade deficit. Let's assume $800 billion is correct. Why didn't Doocy ask President Trump what he thinks the Chinese do with those $800 billion in greenbacks? Why doesn't any reporter challenge the trade warriors to answer this?
What do YOU think China does with that money?
They're probably not greenbacks since many large business transactions are not done in cash.
lc1789 dodges the question among lefties!
It hardly matters what I think, but it sure as hell should matter what the president thinks.
To be taken seriously, you need to back up your criticism. Therefore it does matter what YOU think China does with the money.
You are the one making the criticism and I don't think you know what you are talking about.
I'm not a Nobel prize winning economist (those guys advise the president, no?). So my guess is that China does not stuff the $800 billion into their collective mattresses, but use the money to buy something from somebody and that those dollars eventually make their way back into the hands of Americans. If the dollars don't eventually get spent here, then let's just keep creating I.O.U.s that will never come due.
"The value of China's holdings of U.S. bonds, notes and bills rose by $126.5 billion to $1.18 trillion in December from a year earlier, according to Treasury Department data released Thursday in Washington. China remains the largest non-U.S. holder of debt"
----Bloomberg
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/.....even-years
See? China traded $800 billion dollars of goods, for tiny pieces of paper marked up as treasuries and bonds, which might be able to be traded for other bits of paper known as currency in 5-25 years. Why can no one in the mass media figure out that not only is this a good thing, but is almost the most magnificient and barnumesque trick played by the US on the rest of the world, for nigh unto a century?
China wouldn't need to sell their holdings to devastate our economy. If China simply announced they would buy less U.S. debt in the future, that alone would send the yields on our debt way up.
If you don't think not being able to finance our debt is a problem, did you see what happened to Greece? Do you imagine there's another economy in the world big enough to bail us out like the Greece was bailed out?
The long term solution is to slash spending. China is reluctant to make any such announcements about debt because it would hurt the value of their own holdings--but the more we hurt their economy with tariffs, the more reluctant they'll become to buy more of our debt in the future.
Maybe you're not old enough to remember double-digit interest rates. I assure you, the stock market doesn't trade down as yields rise for no reason. We don't want that. The fact is that tariffs against China have negative consequences associated with them, and if you think we should impose them despite those negative consequences, you should say so.
. . . not simply pretend that they don't exist.
Buy American denominated assets? Change it into something else? Buy oil with it? Use it to protect the peg of the yuan?
They certainly are not buying any shit we make.
What did the asset sellers, the "something else" sellers, and the oil sellers do with the dollars?
Four #NeverTrump Republicans discuss the future of the Republican Party.
Go back to the Democratic Party?
Trump won a Republican primary among numerous "Republican" candidates. Trump is a Republican now, says the majority of Republican voters in the USA.
If I were a Republican, I wouldn't brag about having Trump in my ranks
And just who would you crow about? McCain? McConnell? Ryan? Flake? For me, and my house, we'll stick with Trump.
If those are the only possiblity YOU yourself could come up with to represent your party, then maybe you should feel embarrassed to be a Republican at all.
Many of the politicians that are "Republicans" are RINOs anyway. These RINOs cannot even follow the GOP platform which is why many Republicans voters are pissed and voted in Trump over the RINO presidential picks.
They don't like Trump because he is rolling back government and won't cave to political pressure that typical swamp creatures feed on.
""Go back to the Democratic Party?""
Yes, Trump should go back to the Democratic Party!
#NeverTrump Republicans were always Republican.
Which I also wouldn't brag about, since Never Trump is a pretty exclusive club of elite neoconservative war criminals
American voters: "I don't know why i feel so sick, i made sure to drink from the side of the punchbowl that DIDN'T have turds in it."
Trade war.
The justification for tariffs is that it helps the American worker. Then China puts some tariffs up and we cry foul. But why? They're just helping the Chinese people, which is only fair. When a policy is good for us but bad when other countries do it, it's not a good policy. But moreover, when other countries levy tariffs on us it hurts us. So by trying to protect our exporters we just end up triggering barriers to our exports.
That's right, OUR tariffs hurt OUR exports.
Here's the way the WSJ writes about it:
"Growing concerns over potential trade war between the world's two largest economies"

Here's the way Bloomberg writes about it:
"Equities declined in Europe and Asia amid concern over the escalating protectionist standoff between China and the U.S."

Here's the way Robby writes about it:
"Trump fired another shot in the trade war with China, and China is striking back:"

Two out of three of these are more or less accurate.
I guess the big shift around here over the last few years is that this used to be the kind of place where you'd go to get critical thinking about the headlines. Nowadays, you've gotta supply all the critical thinking yourself.
Comedian and AMC host Chris Hardwick has been accused of emotional and sexual abuse by a former girlfriend, who cited the #MeToo movement as one of her reasons for coming forward.
no wonder his show was canceled last night, that was quick. I guess If you want to ruin some guys life just claim assault and no trial needed they are ruined. it may be true but I'd like to see convictions before judgment
You don't have to actually meet another Tiger mom's straight-A, violin-playing, ACT-acing, tennis team box-checking, STEM-majoring, stick in the mud kid to evaluate their personality, do you? You've seen one you've seen them all. Amirite?
So, are these tariffs being raised for their own sake, or is the goal to bring China to the negotiating table and get a trade agreement? I don't really know, but surely someone does.
I think Trump's goal is noble. He wants to put Americans back to work again, and sees this as a way of doing that plus paying back the people who elected him (rust belt states primarily). The problem is that he sees trade as a zero-sum game that can be won and lost. When in reality it's not and his tariffs will almost certainly cause more harm than good for the US Economy.
The problem is that the Democrats have never been free traders, and the Republicans are too feckless to stand up to Trump for fear that he'll run them out of the party. It's a pretty dire situation for us all when leftist, protectionist policies are allowed to go basically unchecked. There is no longer a party that pays lip service to free trade. But this is part of the new nationalism where Trump can decide what is best for you. "Buy American" slogans don't work so we need a little central planning to make it happen now. Markets be damned!
"Markets be damned!"
I do not know if you can call the unholy alliance of business and government in China as a market or rational market force. The explicit goal appears closer to domination and subversion of competitors in a very monopolistic fashion.
