Brickbat: On Target

A bill before the New York State Assembly Education Committee would end rifle shooting, trap shooting, and archery as sports in the state's schools. Assemblywoman Linda B. Rosenthal, a Manhattan Democrat, introduced the bill, saying "a rise in gun violence and school shootings in recent years has spurred a long overdue re-evaluation of their place in our students' curriculum." Some 1,200 students compete in trap shooting and 34,000 compete in archery in the state.

Archery too. That's rich.
Too many rideby shootings.
I doubt there has ever been a school shooting with a bow and arrow. But I guess she doesn't want to train students to be robbin' hoods.
She used to not punish everyone for the offenses of a few, but then she took an arrow to the knee.
If they actually manage to get rid of guns, thugs might resort to bows and arrows. Archery generally requires more skill then a gun to be effective, so we don't want to train them for the most obvious substitute on ranged weaponry once guns are no longer available.
My last month paycheck was for 11000 dollars... All i did was simple online work from comfort at home for 3-4 hours/day that I got from this agency I discovered over the internet and they paid me for it 95 bucks every hour...

...and useless cunt.

Upstate New Yorkers must be so glad to be chained to the anchor that is NYC.
Don't call her a cunt. She lacks both depth and warmth.
Because sportsmen cause so much violence.
Can't they just enact some common sense archery laws to limit access to the assault bow style weapons used so often in today's risomg tide of bow violence?
Seven arrow quiver, max. Who needs a quiver with more than seven arrows? If you disagree, you must want children to be shot with arrows.
Military-style compound bows should only be used by ex-green berets to shoot down Hind helicopters in Afghanistan.
Bows don't kill people, arrows kill people.
"a rise in gun violence and school shootings in recent years has spurred a long overdue re-evaluation of their place in our students' curriculum"
And what did the re-evaluation show? Any link, any correlation, between shooting classes and classroom shootings? I'll bet not, I'll bet the "re-evaluation" was more like a statement of a pre-determined conclusion than any sort of examination. I'll bet a personal re-evaluation would show she's a lying shitweasel.
I'd even bet their is a correlation between participation in extra curricular activities and a reduction in anti-social behavior.
We've seen a rise in obesity in school age children too. Are we going to remove lunch from school. We've seen a reduction in reading and math scores. Are we extending time in those classes?
New York is a large, mostly rural state. She may want to discuss this 're-evaluation' with those outside her district. It's so easy to propose bans on activities in which you don't personally engage.
Land area, yes, largely rural; population, however, overwhelmingly urban.
Two-third's of the state's population lives in the NYC metropolitan area, with over forty percent living in the city itself.
Add to that the number of people in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany and you get a state where people in small towns and rural areas have no real voice at all.
Upon research her district in on the island of Manhattan, so probably not too many constituent's children would be effected by her overreach. Check out the list of proposed/passed legislation by this blue-blood, do-gooder. It reads like a who's who list of government as the arbiter of all things good. Why are we always just one new piece of legislation away from Utopia?
It can be fun to ask progressives (and conservatives) of various sorts "so when will government's efforts be done? How can we tell when we don't need any more legislation? What would it take to get to that point?"
They really can't cope with the thought, and that pretty much says it all.
Captain Redlegs Terrell from the Outlaw Josey Wales:
"Doin' good ain't got no end....."
"I reckon' so"
If stopping mass shootings are her concern, she should include an end to photography and billiards clubs, too.
Since mass shootings are driven to some extent by the publicity the shooters get, please shut down the school paper too.
Because the last thing gun grabbers and other busybodies need is young people who are actually knowledgeable about firearms - - - - - - - -
My God, they might get taught the difference between fully and semi- automatic weapons. Some damn fool might teach that there is no such thing as "an assault-style rifle" or even "an assault rifle" ! If they engage NRA trained instructors, those poor kids might get taught about a certain obscure part of the constitution that no longer applies in New York.
How about we ban assault legislators? You know, the kind that pass more than one law per session?
If harm reduction is the goal, I suggest that we end funding of the state legislature.
So you're seeking common sense restrictions on assault style legislators used in today's risong tide of assaults on individual liberties?
She must have watched The Hunger Games movie series and felt very uncomfortable seeing a schoolgirl with a bow take down an government of overreaching nanny statists and their fanatical supporters.
They ran the injuns out of New York a couple centuries ago. I don't think that they need to worry about assault arrows anymore.
Hell no. Why use arrows when a casino is a much better way to get back at the white man?
"a rise in gun violence and school shootings in recent years has spurred a long overdue re-evaluation of their place in our students"
How are these people any different than Trump and Sessions lying about crime? Violent crimes of every kind are still decreasing, continuing a 20 year decline. Only in a few zip codes is the murder rate rising, largely due to young black men in gangs. Everywhere else, things are better than ever.
Why do they need to be different?
There are no good people involved, regardless of party affiliation or current position in the power hierarchy.
Slavers are gonna slave-hold.
It's pretty clear Rep. Rosenthal finally got around to seeing the Hunger Games movies.
I bet it passes.
Amendment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
This absolutely includes the protection of bows and arrows.
But the children. THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
True but not relevant in this case.
Schools are public facilities, so banning bows and arrows that students want to use in sports is an infringement.
They can end schools being public, which they won't do.
They can convince enough parents to end the archery program.
They can convince enough parents to not allow their kids to bring weapons to that particular school.
The right is still to be protected.
"a rise in gun violence and school shootings in recent years has spurred a long overdue re-evaluation of their place in our students' curriculum."
You know, Linda, you're right! Rifle shooting, trap shooting, and archery for every student who wants these!
Of course the right approach would be for gun rights advocates to campaign for mandatory gun education in schools. They could use the same approach as those who pushed for sex education did. All of the same arguments apply.
A population armed (tee-hee) with the facts about every risk is a population prepared to deal with those risks.
Stop. Chipper time.
Yeah, because teaching people the responsible use of weapons and how to handle one under pressure is a great response to the supposed epidemic of people trying to kill them.
That's the nice thing about Reason. There was a time when looters on "both" sides could quietly pass moronic laws and send goons with guns out to enforce them before anyone realized there was a conspiracy afoot to coerce them. Nowadays the logistics are a lot more complicated, and an individual rights party can alertly parlay spoiler votes into repeal and deregulation. I appreciate that.
