A bill before the New York State Assembly Education Committee would end rifle shooting, trap shooting, and archery as sports in the state's schools. Assemblywoman Linda B. Rosenthal, a Manhattan Democrat, introduced the bill, saying "a rise in gun violence and school shootings in recent years has spurred a long overdue re-evaluation of their place in our students' curriculum." Some 1,200 students compete in trap shooting and 34,000 compete in archery in the state.

If they actually manage to get rid of guns, thugs might resort to bows and arrows. Archery generally requires more skill then a gun to be effective, so we don't want to train them for the most obvious substitute on ranged weaponry once guns are no longer available.

New York is a large, mostly rural state. She may want to discuss this 're-evaluation' with those outside her district. It's so easy to propose bans on activities in which you don't personally engage.

Two-third's of the state's population lives in the NYC metropolitan area, with over forty percent living in the city itself.

Add to that the number of people in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany and you get a state where people in small towns and rural areas have no real voice at all.

My God, they might get taught the difference between fully and semi- automatic weapons. Some damn fool might teach that there is no such thing as "an assault-style rifle" or even "an assault rifle" ! If they engage NRA trained instructors, those poor kids might get taught about a certain obscure part of the constitution that no longer applies in New York.

How are these people any different than Trump and Sessions lying about crime? Violent crimes of every kind are still decreasing, continuing a 20 year decline. Only in a few zip codes is the murder rate rising, largely due to young black men in gangs. Everywhere else, things are better than ever.

Schools are public facilities, so banning bows and arrows that students want to use in sports is an infringement.

They can end schools being public, which they won't do.

They can convince enough parents to end the archery program.

They can convince enough parents to not allow their kids to bring weapons to that particular school.

The right is still to be protected.

Of course the right approach would be for gun rights advocates to campaign for mandatory gun education in schools. They could use the same approach as those who pushed for sex education did. All of the same arguments apply.

That's the nice thing about Reason. There was a time when looters on "both" sides could quietly pass moronic laws and send goons with guns out to enforce them before anyone realized there was a conspiracy afoot to coerce them. Nowadays the logistics are a lot more complicated, and an individual rights party can alertly parlay spoiler votes into repeal and deregulation. I appreciate that.
