A Male Professor Told a Female Professor a Stupid Joke. Now He Faces Disciplinary Charges.
"A horrifying and chilling example of political correctness."

Last month, Richard Ned Lebow, a professor of political theory at King's College, found himself in a crowded elevator with Simona Sharoni, a professor of gender studies at Merrimack College, during an academic conference in San Francisco. Sharoni asked Lebow what floor he needed. He replied: "ladies' lingerie."
It was a stupid joke—a "standard gag line," Lebow later explained, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. But Sharoni didn't think it was funny. And so she filed a complaint with the International Studies Association, whose conference they were both attending.
An ISA committee found that Lebow had indeed violated the group's code of conduct.
Lebow tried to resolve the matter himself, and wrote to Sharoni. He said he had no intention of making her feel uncomfortable, but stopped short of a full apology. According to The Chronicle:
"Like you, I am strongly opposed to the exploitation, coercion, or humiliation of women," Lebow wrote. "As such evils continue, it seems to me to make sense to direct our attention to real offenses, not those that are imagined or marginal. By making a complaint to ISA that I consider frivolous — and I expect, will be judged this way by the ethics committee — you may be directing time and effort away from the real offenses that trouble us both."
But describing Sharoni's complaint as "frivolous" made the committee even angrier. Lebow was subsequently instructed to issue an "unequivocal apology." He has refused to do so, and could face disciplinary charges. In his mind, the episode is "a horrifying and chilling example of political correctness" that "encourages others to censor their remarks for fear of retribution."
Sharoni, for her part, said that she cannot "remain silent when misogyny is at play."
The Washington Post's Ruth Marcus offered this opinion, which seems right to me:
This episode reflects not only a generational and cultural divide but also the unfortunate intersection of two prickly personalities with the bad luck to be stuck in the same elevator. She shouldn't have leaped to file a grievance; he shouldn't have added fuel by labeling her charge "frivolous."
Nonetheless, count me with Lebow. The days of women feeling compelled to stay silent in the face of sexist remarks or conduct are thankfully on the way out. Hear something, say something, by all means.
But for goodness' sake, let's maintain some sense of proportion and civility as we figure out how to pick our way through the minefield of modern gender relations. Not every comment that offends was intended that way, and intent matters. Maybe check in with the speaker before going nuclear? Maybe consider that there is a spectrum of offensiveness? That not every stray statement by a 76-year-old man warrants a resort to disciplinary procedures?
A misguided elevator joke certainly seems like something two adults could have handled on their own—without formal investigation, and the threat of sanction.

You guys just don't get it. You see, back in the 80s she had a boyfriend who was a big Aerosmith fan. She caught him in bed with her best friend, so you can imagine how she feels about that band. The old guy's quip reminded her of "Love in an Elevator" and brought back all that emotional distress from thirty years ago. Made it feel like yesterday. Because of this the guy needs to apologize or face the consequences. He's a callous bastard and must pay.
She, apparently, has never experienced Heaven on the 7th Floor.
...or seen a Victoria's Secret of heard of Fredericks of Hollywood.
Hope some humorous types adorn her car with panties and bras and such.
It starts with refusing to apologize for a statement that itself may merit criminal prosecution, and then it turns into the kind of extremely serious conduct that needs to be rapidly dealt with by the police. Incidentally, to help make amends with the ISA, perhaps Lebow should consider joining some of us at the next meeting in issuing a public protest against the recent refusal of a so-called judge in New York to jail America's leading criminal "satirist." See the documentation at:

^^ This guy gets it.
My last month paycheck was for 11000 dollars... All i did was simple online work from comfort at home for 3-4 hours/day that I got from this agency I discovered over the internet and they paid me for it 95 bucks every hour...
This is what I do.... http://www.onlinereviewtech.com
Sharoni, for her part, said that she cannot "remain silent when misogyny is at play."
Oh get over yourself you humorless bitch.
Pretty sure the correct retort is "don't get your panties in a bunch". Er, never mind.
HA! good one!
How dare you assume I don't like a little lace myself?
lol.
"Simona Sharoni, a professor of gender studies"
What part of this isn't a red flag with the words "Desperate for a MeToo Moment" written all over it.
Rules for dating women:
a) Do you have Bi-Polar or depression?
b) Do you have a degree in gender studies?
c) Do you like to fuck?
I leave you guys to draw the line where you will.
That's a very woman-hating comment.
She had a boyfriend?
Yeah, in a 50 year old delusion
I'll bet her boyfriend has a vagina.
Boys can have vaginas, your transphobe!
*you
He merely asked for the "ladies' lingerie" floor, he did NOT say that he was "floored" by her "ladies' lingerie", nor did he say that he wanted to "Get off on her ladies' lingerie", he said that he wanted to get off on the floor where they sold "ladies' lingerie".
Has this possibility been investigated: He mumbles a lot, and has a speech impediment? So she couldn't hear him quite right? Running him up the flagpole like this is discrimination against those with speech impediments!
Here, here! that ratchetty old hag needs to pull her head out of her ass - she is believing her own bullshit that she spews to her students in an attempt to turn them into warped old hags too.
And cross dressers
Good fucking lord, I just looked at their pictures and they are both 70 years old. Act your fucking age Simona Sharoni, who do you think you are, a 20 year old gender studies student? No wonder your students leave college poorly adjusted to deal with the real world.
She's worse than a 20 year old gender studies student. She's a 70 year and of gender studies professor. That means she's been teaching generations of students to constantly be offended, feel oppressed, and stop saving legs and armpits (among other places). Everything that's wrong with 20 year old gender studies students, she's caused.
I wonder how she would have reacted if he had been singing "My Sharona."
Heaven on the 7th Floor is a better tune.
We clearly need common sense elevator control!
I suggest each building with elevators be required to have the following:
An elevator reserved for men
An elevator reserved for women
An elevator reserved for men who think they are women
An elevator reserved for women who think they are men
An elevator reserved for people with no sense of humor, where speaking is forbidden.
Politically correct response to someone asking you 'what floor' in an elevator; reach past them and press the appropriate button in total silence.
You forgot to include a ban on assault elevators, banning persons on the No-Fly List from using elevators, and mandatory psychological screening for all elevator passengers. Oh yeah...no one under 21 can use an elevator unless accompanied by parent or guardian.
Single occupancy elevators. 🙂
Exactly! I bet Elon can start making giant versions of those tube thingys at the bank drive thru just large enough for one person.
Politically correct response to someone asking you 'what floor' in an elevator; reach past them and press the appropriate button in total silence.
Not necessarily. If you're not able to reach around them without touching them or invading their personal space that might make them feel uncomfortable, and Zod forbid someone be made to feel uncomfortable. Also, pushing the button yourself could be interpreted as you thinking that womyn are incapable of pushing a button without some man doing it for them. So that would be problematic at best.
No, the only solution is to curtly reply with the number of the floor you wish while keeping your eyes straight ahead (unless zhe is standing right in front of you, in which case turn to the side and stare straight ahead) and whatever you do, do not crack a "joke" or attempt to make to make small talk of any kind.
..."curtly reply...eyes straight ahead..." I'm calling micro-aggression!
Dammit! I guess the real solution is to just not get on an elevator with womyn in the first place.
Be careful lest they think you are avoiding them. That's discrimination you know!
Exclusionary boys club elevator
Just telecommute and avoid people all together, they suck.
Who are you, Mike Pence?!?
just **fart**
Nobody needs an elevator that has 17 floors.
NICE
How about
An elevator for people neither male or female.
An elevator for people who think they're male AND female.
An elevator for people who are male AND female.
An elevator for people with ambiguous genitalia? Huh?
I'm not certain we've covered all the possibilities and that is a crying, fucking shame!
Maybe everyone should take the stairs.....AND....No Talking!!!!
Really only need 10 elevators.
One for those who are "binary,"
and one for those who are not.
I like to troll SJWs, so if I had been him, I would ha e handled the complaint very differently.
He could have said the ladies lingerie is something he enjoys wearing because he is not hopelessly cis-gendered like her. The fact she lodged a complaint is about it deeply offensive to him and his queer identity. She needs to apologize for her transphobic actions.
Take that, m-m-m-my Sharoni!
Shweet! Take it, turn it around, and turn it up to 11!
Reminds me of the time my nephew was saying something cluelessly homophobic, because, that's what kids do in school (still), and I turned and looked him straight in the eye, and told him "How dare he insult my long lineage of gay fathers and gay children..."
Should have included "... and gay siblings..." and REALLY freaked out the little snot. 🙂
Ditto! Thanks for stating it better than I would have if I read and responded to it first.
YES
Never defend, always attack.
Any identity taking of offense can be interpreted as an identity attack. Take offense in turn.
It's so cute that the author thinks there were adults involved.
This dude fucked up. All he had to do in the aftermath is say he was serious and he's a transvestite. Home free.
Ma ma ma ma ma my Sharoni.
Actually, "L-O-L-A Lola" makes more sense.
Or ? call me crazy ? he could say he was doing an errand on behalf of a female person (or joking about doing such an errand).
Would she/Could she have still sued him if he'd replied "Power Tools and Hardware".... yes, I'd bet... She is such a JERK!
Let's see... "Notions"?... nope.
"Bedroom Accessories"? Hell, no!
"Appliances"? OMFG, NO!
He was screwed, pretty much no matter what he said, other than "Seven, please." And if he didn't include "Please, " she'd still have sued him!
College professors Really Suck nowadays, don't they? (oh, wait, will she sue me for THAT, now? Fuck!... I mean, gee, gosh, whillikers!)
Gender fluid
Keep your options open in all circumstances
This is a feminist bookstore. There is no humor section.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That! 😀
That's not funny!
She shouldn't have leaped to file a grievance; he shouldn't have added fuel by labeling her charge "frivolous."
I wasn't there, so I can't really judge, but 100% that complaint is frivolous and will ultimately damage the credibility of those who might be actual victims. Whether she admits it or not, Marcus just agreed with Lebow and her only charge against him is saying overtly what she refused to do in print. I believe we're seeing an unfortunate trend of certain types tying their self worth to their claims of victimhood. Institutions do no one any good by indulging them.
People like her don't care about actual victims, they care about advancing their careers and protecting their little bubbles of leftist privilege.
Yess! No one with a real job would have had the time to waste on such a frivolous complaint. That's part of the problem -- academics, especially the useless gender studies, sociology, political science, and other "social" science types, are useless jobs, nothing to do except puff themselves up to make themselves appear useful and keep their departments open and enrollment high. Same as their students -- their degree will be useless as far as any knowledge learned, so they have to puff themselves up to convince themselves they aren't wasting four years just for a piece of parchment which qualifies them for the secretarial pool or selling french fries.
Unfortunately, this type of complaint happens outside of academia all the time as well. Because of EEOC rules, HR departments have to take this sort of complaint seriously and are forced to err on the side of disciplining the "offender". It is ridiculous, but that is the world we live in today.
HR departments have to take this sort of complaint seriously
Well, they don't have to, but a lot of those HR departments are staffed by people with victimhood studies degrees. That and apparently corporate lawyers have decided that it's cheaper to settle any wrongful termination lawsuits that might be filed by someone who was unjustly fired over an idiotic complaint than it is to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit. And given that in the case of a person suing for wrongful termination HR will have a paper trail showing that someone complained about them "harassing" a coworker, they're probably right.
The cultural (and legal) paradigm that's been set is that they more or less do. HR departments exist for one thing, to protect the parent company. That's it. They're not your friend. They're not mediators. They're not allies. Their job, unfortunately, is to minimize risk to the company. The state of performative victimhood that "progressives" have placed this country in has left us at the point where "minimal risk" means firing anyone who's accused of wrongdoing without fair consideration.
Even more unfortunately, the majority of the country is in a state of pure at-will employment so there is really no such thing as "wrongful termination" unless you're a member of one of those wonderfully protected classes, like say, a female gender-studies professor who thinks an innocent joke makes you a victim of the patriarchy.
What he said.
Almost all that hyper self-protection is only necessary due to State regulations, and the staffers you mention with the victimhood studies degrees are more than happy to enforce Title IX and its ilk. It is a conspiracy, but a self-organized one enabled by the State.
Keep in mind that it is not an HR department in a work setting that is "investigating" this complaint, but a "society" -- the International Studies Association -- which seems to be at a loss as to what to do apart from issue silly responses. I suppose they could throw him out of the association, for which he might ultimately be grateful.
Yeah, that "both sides are wrong" take is offensive. If we can't call a spade a spade (and we can't), we are all doomed. He absolutely should not have needed to call her charge frivolous. The committee should have immediately done that for him.
Even a moderately offensive joke shouldn't rise to the level of a complaint unless it is dealt with on an adult level and the "offender" keeps repeating the mistake. (And this joke isn't even moderately offensive) The fact that we not only indulge this juvenile behavior but actually endorse and enforce it is pathetic.
I endorse this viewpoint
I approve of your sane message.
I believe we're seeing an unfortunate trend of certain types tying their self worth to their claims of victimhood
Yeah, pretty much.
Simona Sharoni, a professor of gender studies
A "professor" of pseudo-academic bullshit, whose job shouldn't exist in the first place.
-jcr
"...found himself in a crowded elevator with Simona Sharoni, a professor of gender studies" You beat me to it; that was his first mistake.
It's probably a good idea, especially at an academic conference where there may be some batshit crazy gender studies professors around, to avoid getting in an elevator with any woman in the first place. You just can't take the chance.
Professor of SJW Studies = Defender of the Faith of the SJW Theocracy
Now she can call herself a professor of applied gender studies. Filing this sort of frivolous complaints seems the main application of her field of study.
This will be a teaching moment to which she'll refer in all her future courses. I wonder if it will make it into the textbooks (well, surely in any textbooks she plans to write), as a textbook example of putting gender theory to practical use.
Remember folks, there is no free speech crisis on college campuses. This is just media hype designed to distract attention from issues of real importance like Stormy Daniels.
The fact this dude said this to a Gender Studies "professor" is pretty hilarious. Talk about an unfortunate coincidence.
Hence the term "snowflake"
"The Washington Post's Ruth Marcus offered this opinion, which seems right to me:
This episode reflects not only a generational and cultural divide but also the unfortunate intersection of two prickly personalities with the bad luck to be stuck in the same elevator. She shouldn't have leaped to file a grievance; he shouldn't have added fuel by labeling her charge "frivolous."
There is no generational and cultural divide on this--her charge is frivolous.
. . . and this seems "right" to you?!
Go soak your head, Robbie. You're an embarrassment to libertarianism. That people of any generation thin you speak for us on free speech makes me feel nauseated.
Yeah, you're way off on this one Robbie. It is the definition of frivolous. See something, say something. Say "I don't appreciate your humor". And leave it at that. Far more effective and humane.
What? No crap about sports?
A European intellectual prick hoisted by his own petard. Another European feminist activist making a fool of herself and revealing the cantankerous and nasty woman she is. And an ideologically intolerant academic organization striking fear into its members. What's there not to like? Hand me the popcorn.
Professor Dick Ned attempts stand-up routine with tired old material and bombs.
... man walks into a bar with a monkey on his head ...
Note that Lebow is a well-known and highly successful academic in his 70's. He could just tell the ISA to go pound sand and resign his membership; he doesn't need them for anything: his income and his academic legacy (such as it is) are secure.
The fact that Lebow grovels and tries to resolve this shows you that he agrees with their policies in principle, he just doesn't like it when they are applied to him personally.
Exactly. In the same situation, most of us would probably give a middle finger salute to the "authorities."
His biggest mistake was interacting with a "gender studies" professor under the mistaken assumption that they are real life intelligent human beings, let alone qualified academic instructors. Any course or major with the word "studies" anywhere in it is just some reaching nonsense an academically unqualified professor made up in a desperate stab at tenure.
I only had one course like that, Medieval Studies. It was pretty enjoyable.
it seems to me to make sense to direct our attention to real offenses, not those that are imagined or marginal.
Doh! You can't be a guy and say that. You can't call women's concerns frivolous or marginal. That's the whole damned point they're making. Granted, his original comment was totally innocuous, but women are trying to make a fucking point right now so keep your mouth shut. Things will return to normal soon enough.
So because someone else is wrong they'll eventually learn they are wrong by their victims accepting their punishment in silence? What point are you trying to make?
My point is that an aggrieved group is pissed off and looking to strike. As we've learned in the past year, you don't even need victims or the absence of consent to be publicly taken down and have your career wiped out. In this case, the guy is an absolute idiot for opening his mouth. He will lose in the court of popular opinion no matter how logically he presents his case, and will probably be punished. The one thing that can exacerbate that punishment even more is to suggest that a woman's voice/opinion/complaint is "frivolous". The whole fucking point of the #metoo movement is that a woman's complaint should never be treated as frivolous. I literally did a facepalm when I read his comment.
Quick aside -- in another forum only a couple hours ago, I said that Louie CK is being chastised because a lot of people don't approve of the sexual act he and the girls engaged in. I didn't elaborate. I was then accused of being a sex offender and "getting off" on sexual abuse of women. This is our environment right now. I can give my opinion anonymously on the internet, but I would have to be the biggest fucking moron in history to give it with my name attached. Therefore, Dr. Lebow might be the biggest fucking moron in history.
I agree JSJ....this is one of those no win situations for a man. To put it in layman's terms....
"Sometimes a guy needs to know when to....shut the fuck up"!!!!!
There's your problem. I think a pre-requisite for becoming a professor of gender studies is to have your sense of humor removed. Either that or be a humorless scold to start with. Assuming he knew what her field was, he should have known better than to make any kind of joke that even remotely be construed as offensive around her. And avoid eye contact at all costs (no MALE GAZE).
Ah, shit. That's pretty much the equivalent of telling her to "calm down" which anyone who's spent more than 5 seconds around a hysterical harpy knows full well is pretty much strikes 1, 2, and 3.
A professor of political theory is just as useless as a professor of gender studies.
True.
Judge for yourself
WTF?
OK, just type "Richard Ned Lebow" in the the Amazon search engine.
He writes about war and peace, and one of his books speculates about a world in which WWI never happened.
Any major or course with the word "studies" in the title is a surefire sign that it's merely a fabrication concocted by an otherwise unqualified "educator" in a desperate (and unfortunately often successful) stab at tenure since they couldn't get it teaching real course material.
Nobody who is a "professor of _____ studies" need ever be taken seriously by any adult of sound mind, ever.
They'e not all like that. My Medieval Studies (and French) instructor was a French language professor from Lyons, but she spoke six languages fluently, including Hindi, and an expert on classical and vulgar Latin. She was often consulted on ancient texts, sometimes ancient ships' logs for treasure hunters. And an interesting and fun person to talk to if you could handle the pressure of conversing in French. We met G. Gordon Liddy at a school function and she was put off by his background and politics, but when he spoke perfect French, she was utterly enchantee.
So if she speaks vulgar Latin, is it OK to ask for sex?
"Either that or be a humorless scold to start with. "
More likely.
That's assuming that both individuals are properly functioning adults. An assumption not supported by the evidence.
Appliances.
Sporting Goods.
Mens Wear.
Housewares.
Tip-toeing through a toxic misogynist minefield.
Appliances - So you're saying that women should be in the kitchen? Misogynist.
Sporting Goods - So you're saying that as a man you have an interest in sports? Misogynist
Men's Wear - So you're saying that only men can wear those clothes? You're not only a misogynist but a heteronormative one a that!
Housewares - Are you telling that poor woman that she should be domesticated? Prepare to grovel for your job, oppressor!
Every one of those is a landmine itself.
Not to mention that sporting goods clearly implies a desire to purchase an assault rifle and kill a thousand women and children - - - - - - - -
Can someone help me connect the dots between what he said in the elevator and "misogyny"? I'm not able to see that connection...
That's because you are a misogynist.
Questioning the charge is confirmation of guilt.
She's a professor of the fabricated discipline of "gender studies." Engaging in the performative victimhood of crying misogyny is pretty much an academic qualification (if one can actually be "qualified" for nonsense "studies" professorship).
Looks like you did not get the email that anything you say that a woman later objects to is misogynistic.
It no longer means "Hatred of, contempt for, or prejudice against women." That was yesterday.
These crapstains aren't going to learn until they're rightfully hanging from the noose they made for others.
Robby is trying way too hard to see two sides to this issue. There's only one right side. There's nothing "misguided" or "offensive" about the joke. And the complaint was not only frivolous but malicious. If the committee has any ethics or common sense, it would discipline the woman who made the completely insane complaint. Professor Lebow should tell them all to go fuck themselves. And he should invite anybody with common sense to leave the ISA if they don't back down and apologize.
Yeah, Robby's showing his writing tic again. He has to signal that he's on your side. (where "you" is the progressives, who's ox he's presumably goring) Who knows, maybe it is effective. Maybe it will gain him entree to the more lucrative world of Salon.com counter-programming where he can use his false-equivalence jujitsu to bring the message of liberty to the progressive crowd.
Or invites to the best cocktail parties.
"Gender Studies"...I'll take the stairs.
Ablist!
What more evidence is needed that women are fragile creatures, easily damaged and ready to call for help from the authorities for the slightest things. Or perhaps they are just vindictive and hateful of men?
Either way, why should any male with hiring authority want to bring this dysfunction into his company? Where is the benefit of importing this kind of assault on the men in his employ?
These authoritarians want to rule everyone else, it will be best when they take each other out with craziness like this.
Ending all these ridiculous studies programs would be a good start to bringing sanity back to universities.
I know this ain't very libertarian but I really think legislation is needed to protect people in the workplace. It should be if it is legal to say outside of the workplace then it should be OK to do inside as well because this is beginning to feel kind of oppressive. A person kind of feels like they are on some kind of minefield when they are speaking with someone else. Is this offensive? Can I say this? Who knows anymore and who cares. YES! That is the attitude you should have with these people. Don't apologize. Don't try to play nice with them because it will never pay off.
Isn't sexual harassment laws a violation of the constitution? Think about this for a moment. The government has passed a law that punishes employers if one of their employees says something offensive in the workplace. They get punished by lawsuits and the result is is that a code of things to say has developed that prohibits people from talking to each other freely.
She is a coward in my opinion. If someone said something I found truly offensive to me on an elevator, I would not hesitate to tell him off for his misogyny. But since it was an attempt at humor, in this case, I might have merely turned it around on him and said, "I had NO idea you were the sort to enjoy wearing ladies panties. Good for you!" We would have probably both had a laugh. There was no reason to make a complaint designed to publicly embarrass or ruin the man over a minor faux pas. No one will ever take these feminists seriously if they cannot learn to engage in civil conversation, even with perceived adversaries.
a complaint designed to publicly embarrass or ruin the man
I'm pretty sure that this is, quite literally, exactly the reason for the complaint.
If she can't take the heat of her frivolous complaint being called "frivolous" she needs to get back in the kitchen.
"Sharoni, for her part, said that she cannot 'remain silent when misogyny is at play.'"
Liberal/progressive facists authoritarians show they apparently are unable to say something to the person making a joke, but are happy to use the forces of government to harm someone who's only engaged in speech. Frankly, I don't see any misogyny here, but I do see misandry. Where will the male professor get to file his complaint and force her to apologize, and doesn't the female professor support such tactics and use of force against misandry speech?
A proportional response to offensive speech, is to respond with better speech. Not to actually harm someone for their mere speech.
Take Simona Sharoni - please!
That's not funny!
At least he didn't say 69.
In the kind of sick audience he was in, she shouldn't have been upset, as he may wear ladies lingerie.
Since we can be trans anything, always just claim an identity that trumps the identity of your accuser.
The professors' comment was to the opening of the old TV show, Are You Being Served? If you know that, she probably would have found it funny. If she did not know that, then she might have reason to be offended or at least think it was an inappropriate thing to say at a place of work.
At work, you do not have freedom of speech. I work with two men. We exchange pleasantries in the morning. We usually stand more than 3 feet apart and avoid any banter that could be considered sexual. We have a work/professional relationship and as such we avoid such talk.
A joke referring to a TV show is great when out with friends that you know will understand that context and probably love you and will forgive you even if you accidentally offend them. However, when it comes to work colleagues keep the dialog professional. If you don't have a work related reason to speak then keep your mouth shut.

It was a conference they don't work together.
You sound like tons of fun..
Beat me to it.
If this was mysogyny( is that spelled right?) Shirona (whatever) is uncomfortable all the time. Was seeing the aggression in her small mind before entering the elevator and is frankly, a PC asshole.
It probably wouldn't help, but I'd kind of like to see less equivocal statements. "I don't need to defend my views on women's rights, because it was a fucking joke, you meddling prig." The type of defiance you see in literature in the likes of Bartleby or Howard Roark.
I... agree.
I used to work for a guy who got demoted for a comment that was misconstrued by someone of another culture. Our project team had 5 managers and 5 computer programmers. The overall lead said "we have too many chiefs and not enough Indians." What he meant was that we had too many managers and not enough programmers. An Indian (from India) complained and a week later the team had 4 managers and 6 programmers after the lead was demoted to programmer.
Still to many chiefs.
San Francisco, "academic conference", stuck in an elevator with a gender studies (aka gynocentric butthurt waiting to happen) "professor". The guys fucked no matter what. He should just man up and state, "Simona you simple minded cunt, you confuse me with someone who cares about your opinion" then tweak her titty nipple. If anything you do gets you in trouble, you might as well make it worth it and do it right.
This is clearly sexual discrimination. THE MAN HAS A RIGHT TO BE A DIRTY OLD MAN!!! Oh, wait...
By the way, did he ever get to see (the) lady's lingerie? [Asking for a friend.]
Wow. Not only does this predator still have a job, but people are actually ridiculing the survivor of the lingerie comment. I'm literally shaking.
"Ladies lingerie" is misogyny? Fucking seriously? What the fuck is wrong with people? Her grievance isn't just frivolous, it's fucking laughably frivolous, bordering on the utterly insane. Next time she steps on an elevator, if the car just happened to not be at the floor, it would do the world a favor.
Why does she hate the female body so?
When are men going to learn that staying away from any woman who has not *proven* herself to be safe is the best course?
Woman you don't know gets on an elevator? Get off of the elevator. When women have had enough of men ignoring them (their worst fear) they'll pressure other women to stop the nonsense.
OMG he might be disciplined by the International Studies Association. Wait, who gives a flying fuck? He should have told her to file her complaint up her crusty old cunt.
How can anyone who's dumb enough to speak to a gender studies professor be smart enough to become a university professor?
Being smart has nothing to do with becoming a university professor.
Wait... Who is she to judge? Maybe he really likes to wear ladies lingerie! Don't judge his underwear life choices!
The best outcome would be a total collapse of civilization. When people have to start competing with grizzly bears for their dinner, they might start getting their priorities in order.
But Sharoni didn't think it was funny.
I'm going to wager that Sharoni is a shrill, shrieking harpy with no sense of humor.
Sharoni, for her part, said that she cannot "remain silent when misogyny is at play."
Nailed it.
Never apologize to these people. Never apologize when you've done nothing wrong.
They don't give a rats ass about being 'offended', that's just a shield and a club for them. I'm grossly offended these leftist hacks are able to railroad people who've done nothing wrong, but they don't give a fuck about me being offended, so why should I give a fuck if they are.
Never apologize to these people. Never apologize when you've done nothing wrong.
Fuckin' A man!! !
The fucking commie ass clowns see apologizing as a sign of weakness.
I always double down on my offense.
Perhaps only someone with significant daddy issues would be so triggered by a dad joke.
If I told you you had a nice body would you hold it against me?
He was not wrong to state it was frivolous, it was...well....FRIVOLOUS.
Whatever happened to just shutting up in the elevator? Anyway. Whatever happened to treating others like professionals? Old guy got what was coming to him.
A kerfuffle among leftist professors and you expect any of them to behave like professionals or adults? Come on, what are you thinking?
I actually get a "kick" out of seeing such policies exploding in the face of those responsible. I knew what the article was about when I read, "a professor of gender studies."
In reality, gender studies, women's studies, black studies, etc., always mean one thing, Victimology.
Everyone in such studies seem to be looking for another reason to be aggrieved. Every comment these days is under intense scrutiny by a potential offendee.
I refuse to play anymore. We still have a First Amendment that guarantees a right to "freedom of speech." Conversely there is no right to be free of offense.
If you don't like my choice of words, or my insults, you are free to not be around me. Two words, GET LOST.
How do you propose to enforce this if in an office of people, 2 are offended by your remarks and your solution is to just leave.
Should have said he was gender fluid, and felt like wearing women's lingerie.
No, there aren't two sides to this: her complaint absolutely was frivolous, and he was right to refuse to apologize. If people keep giving in to neurotic idiots with persecution complexes, soon we'll be apologizing daily for our mere existence.
Easy Reason? peeps... I'm mad too, very...
But the issue here seems to be that the 1st Amendment is no longer available for white, straight, males - particular if one is older. (Racism, Heterophobia, Sexism and ageism oh and chucking the 1st Amendment out the window.)
What does the 1A have to do with this? The ISA is a private leftist organization of leftist international meddlers. They can choose to censure, censor, or kick out whoever they want for whatever reason they want.
Touchy, touchy, touchy. The entire left has come undone because Donald Trump won the presidency, and now they have to rigorously enforce their politically correct version of all speech and actions to prove just how worthy they are. "Ladies' Lengerie!" Really? Oh, the humanity!
A juvenile child who hasn't grown up and dislikes what someone has said will whine "I'll tell my dad on you." A supposedly adult professor of gender studies like Simona Sharoni who has NOT grown up and dislikes what someone has said will complain to the authorities.
When will people learn that part of growing up is to accept that other people think differently, and that's okay, just part of the multi-colored fabric of life!
NO! NO! NO!
Everyone has to think the same as me!
If you don't I will hold my breath until I turn blue!
Blue is the only acceptable color !!!
People like this woman should die. They literally ruin the entire world.
Olga said: "The professors' comment was to the opening of the old TV show, Are You Being Served? If you know that, she probably would have found it funny."
Not necessarily: she might have been offended at being addressed as though she were a lowly elevator operator.
PS: Come to think of it, she didn't need to know about "Are You Being Served?" to realize that he was addressing her as though she were an elevator girl?IOW his servant, in a sense. That may have been what really riled her.
It's odd that she didn't understand the elevator joke/reference...it's a "bit" that's been utilized in countless movies, sitcoms and Buggs Bunny cartoons...
I know this because I'm a Prof of The Elevator Joke studies.....
IOW, he should have quipped "men's lingerie" ?
Sticks and stones may break my bones but words just utterly devastate me.
The new attitude.
One day a group of fellow engineers (mix of software and electrical engineers) were coming back from lunch. We got on the elevator on the first floor, and on the second floor we all back up to make room as a fairly large woman gets on. Whenwe reach our floor, she makes no move to clear any space and instead just stands smack in the middle of the door. So the first guy squeezes by her, and we start going around her single-file, counter-clockwise around her. It being a group of engineers someone said "bit-shift right" as we shuffled out.
When the doors closed, i pointed out that she probably heard something completely different...

Women are such pussies.
"Political correctness" is the death of civilized, open communication between otherwise adult humans. It serves no other purpose than to divide and halter effective discourse between people by censoring and, indeed punishing, free speech.
Some basic fact checking, please.
He doesn't face "disciplinary charges", it is their professional organization that is handling this. He is a successful senior professor, he can simply leave.
And he wasn't talking to her and didn't "tell her a joke", he responded to a man asking "what floor".
But she did remain silent, didn't she?
Instead of speaking up for herself like a mature adult and professional, she remained silent and then ran to an authority figure afterwards. And people wonder why women are underrepresented in management positions: it's this sort of shitty, destructive behavior.
Wow...the world we live in...

"In 1989 she moved to the United States to pursue doctoral studies, and holds a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University"

Build the wall !!!!!!
It wasn't a "misguided joke", it was a fine, even if dated and hackneyed joke.
Although the author sides with the joking professor, technically the article's author seems to come down on the side of the complaint, effectively saying "Even though it was inappropriate and actionable, people should have thicker skin and not formally complain."
The simple fact is, by all reasonable standards it was not sexual harassment, or insulting or anything untoward; it was the idiocy of the complainer and the sanctioning committee's standard of what constitutes harassment.
As long as the judging committees will entertain such a ridiculous complaint, and even double down as to legitimate it is, there will always be someone out there to take advantage of those low-bar standards.
I would never have thought about it before but I am going to try to remember to use that line if ever the opportunity arises.
This is something that would get a laugh in any elevator I've ever frequented. Only someone unfortunate enough to be caught in an academic building with a women's studies professor would get the stink eye. Because that's the most hostile environment for women in the world!
You know where off-color jokes don't offend women? Sweatshops. They're too busy.
My Buddy's mom makes $77 hourly on the computer . She has been laid off for five months but last month her check was $18713 just working on the computer for a few hours. try this web-site

It seems that men throwing out flirty comments can only do so with chicks in which there is no professional connection. Being an engineer (retired), there have never been that many chicks around for me to offend.
imona Sharoni, a "professor of women's and gender studies" That's all you need to know about the senior snowflake. Liberalism and these idiotic "xyz Studies" are destroying our universities and offering classes that will do nothing to enhance one's job resume' once they leave college. Unless of course they too choose to follow in the footsteps of their professors and pursue a career in college academics. I worked 35 years in HR for a Tier I auto manufacturer and never had a department request for someone skilled in "women's and gender studies".
Is there any question why our two major economic competitors, Japan and China, far exceed our own schools and universities in quality of education? Time for our colleges and universities to return to the STEM courses and dump the liberal crap that does nothing to prepare our children for work in the real world........
If we can't surpass them in trade and education, maybe we should try exporting all the liberal crap we have to deal with to those countries......At least that would level the playing field.
What a political incident got to read here! It is really horrifying and chilling kind of news. I am totally in favor in lady who has taken right decision by filing a complaint with the International Studies Association.
