Trump's Strange Appeasement of Putin

When it comes to Putin, Trump comes across as scared.

U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who is used to being surrounded by diplomats representing murderous regimes, has found out the most dangerous place for her to be: between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

In a TV interview Sunday, she said the administration would shortly impose additional sanctions on Moscow for its role in Syria's chemical weapons program. The president was watching and "yelled at the television," reports The New York Times. The next day, the White House said it would not add to the sanctions because the president would "like to have a good relationship" with Russia. Economic adviser Larry Kudlow attributed the apparent reversal to Haley's "momentary confusion."

She could have done the country a service by resigning to protest the administration's vacillating on Russia and lying about her. Instead, she tartly rebuked Kudlow: "With all due respect, I don't get confused." Kudlow then admitted that the policy had changed overnight.

Trump takes pride in his self-image as a tough guy. When a protester disrupted a rally, he said, "I'd like to punch him in the face." After the Parkland shootings, he said he probably would have run in to confront the killer, even without a gun.

He's always putting foreign leaders in their place. He's slapped the Chinese with tariffs and said he would welcome a trade war. He's threatened North Korea with destruction. He's denounced the "brutal and corrupt Iranian regime."

Allies are not exempt from his ire. Trump has yelled at Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, slammed British Prime Minister Theresa May on Twitter, and derided German Chancellor Angela Merkel's refugee policy as "insane." Mexico, South Korea, and Japan often get treated rudely.

But when it comes to Putin, Trump doesn't come across as fierce or demanding. He comes across as scared.

Why is not clear. It may or may not come to light that Trump and his campaign conspired with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election. A video of him consorting with prostitutes in Moscow may or may not emerge. But what we know already is that he practically grovels before Putin.

During the campaign, he said over and over that Putin had been "very nice" to him. He praised Putin as "a strong leader." Strangest of all, he complained about Hillary Clinton's stance on Russia: "She shouldn't be talking so tough."

This approach was at odds with Republican policy for the previous century. The GOP always regarded Russia as a dangerous rival, if not an enemy, that has to be dealt with firmly and skeptically.

Trump doesn't see it that way. He has resisted doing anything that might offend Putin. This isn't because Russia has pulled out of Crimea, abandoned Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, cut back its military, or tried to ease tensions with our NATO allies. In fact, Putin has done the opposite.

He even showed a video depicting a Russian missile attack on Florida. Not least important, the Russians interfered in the 2016 election—which Dick Cheney said could "be considered an act of war."

Shortly after taking office, Trump spilled secrets to the Russian ambassador. In a recent phone call, he congratulated Putin for being re-elected—even though he had been advised not to and even though the election was manifestly unfair.

He also invited Putin to the White House. And this call happened after Britain accused Russia of poisoning a former Russian spy and his daughter.

The president has felt compelled to go along with some measures proposed by his advisers in response to Russia's aggressive behavior. But Trump has been reluctant. Though he was persuaded to provide weapons to Ukraine, he wanted it kept secret.

He agreed to banish 60 Russian diplomats over the poisoning. But when France and Germany each expelled only four, reports The Washington Post, he was "furious that his administration was being portrayed in the media as taking by far the toughest stance on Russia."

The docility Trump has so often shown suggests that he is desperate to avoid antagonizing the Russian leader. He doesn't seem to care that appeasement is unpopular. A new ABC News poll found that 74 percent of Democrats and 68 percent of Republicans favor stronger sanctions on Russia. Trump is also acting against the preferences of congressional Republicans—even though it means looking spineless.

He seems to know something that we don't know—and he doesn't want us to know. Maybe the Kremlin doesn't have material that could destroy Trump. But his administration looks like the world's longest hostage video.

"Let's be friends with Russia. Wouldn't that be nice?" And the Trumpkins cheered. Why? Because the plan was to ally with Russia to incite terrorism in the middle east and use that as a pretext to nuke them to disrupt oil supplies to boost the value of big oil's interests in the US and Russia. It's really not that hard to understand. (Which is also why they tapped Tilly thinking he'd be their stooge, but he turned out to be a pretty good guy, which was why he was eventually booted.) It's the Flynn-Bannon plan, and Trump is still pushing ahead with it as much as he can. Assad is an ally here, which is why he hates to provoke him and his strikes are pretty timid (and he gave Assad tons of warning too). Haley was bound to get caught in the middle, especially as just a year ago she said to let Assad do what he wants, which is a signal for him to use chemical weapons, as she discovered much to her chagrin and didn't want to make the same mistake again (and no doubt felt tricked) so that's why she was being so forceful and deliberate here. She has 2 attacks on her conscience and doesn't want another. Even though she's a Zionist, the fact that she has a conscience is a good thing and she shouldn't resign. Anyway as for Trump, he has surrounded himself witch Russiaphobes like Bolton and Pompeo and he will become increasingly isolated and impotent. It's all good. The core problem is Russia needs freedom of the press and to stop killing journalists who speak out on Syria.

Is this ironic or did you mean to post this on InfoWars?

    2. Kyfho Myoba   7 years ago

Dajjal, what an idiot you are. Russia would not ally to incite terrorism, Russia is the primary victim of [US sponsored] terrorism. Haley is a neocon ass hat, not reasonable or "good" in any way, and she clearly does NOT have a conscience as we know from what she doesn't say about the Sauds murdering most of Yemen with US weapons. Assad did NOT use chemical weapons, he was on the verge of victory when he was accused of using them both times, clearly these are false flag events.

Everyone here is stupider for having read your dreck.

Appeasing expanistionist dictators in Europe is what got us WWII so I could just as well turn that question back on you.

      2. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

The USA didn't appease Hitler and Mussolini. Britain, France, and Russia did.

Technically the USA got into WWII because Japan attacked us and then Germany declared war on the USA.

WWII would have went very differently if Germany never declared war on the USA and the USA only fought Japan.

      3. Kyfho Myoba   7 years ago

        > Appeasing expanistionist dictators in Europe is what got us WWII

No, sending troops to Europe and embargoing Japan got us into WW2

          Vox, but yes.

  6. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Chapman, you're confusing putting America first and getting things done to further American interests with being scared of Putin.

Obama was scared of Putin as evidenced by almost no reaction to Russia seizing The Crimea and starting a civil war in Ukraine in order to bring these areas under Russian control.

Who cares if Russia and Syria strike a deal to have Russian ships located at a Syria port. We are not at war with Russia, so why go to war with Russia by killing Russian troops in Syria.

Trump was elected partly to defeat ISIS and leave Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. His plan is to leave these locales without a void that ISIS can fill with Islamic extremism. Clinton, Bush, and Obama created most of these messes and Trump thinks he can end them with America "winning", whatever that means.

    1. Palin's Buttplug   7 years ago

Obama put sanctions on Russia after Crimea, you dumbass hack.

Openborders-liberaltarian is a better than you by far.

      1. NotAnotherSkippy   7 years ago

After winking and nodding that ukraine wasn't really that important and "overloading" our relationship with russia after he was elected the first time.

      2. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Was that before or after Obama told Putin that he has more flexibility after the 2012 election?

I wonder if Mueller will investigate that relationship with Putin puttin' it in Obama?

  7. colorblindkid   7 years ago

I'm just confused because the Trump administration has been far more aggressive and confrontational with Putin than Obama's was, so why hasn't Putin released said incriminating evidence? Also, are to think that there is a secret back channel conversation going on between Trump and the Russians to this day? After he became president? Just think the whole thing through...

    1. Decent Snail   7 years ago

Trump hired a secret Russian back channel guy to run his campaign.

      1. colorblindkid   7 years ago

And now that he's president, is there still a back channel guy running messages between Putin and Trump that somehow nobody knows about? We're running into George Bush syndrome territory here, where the guy is supposed to have an IQ of 70 and be the most incompetent and stupidest president ever, yet he's also the mastermind behind some of the greatest conspiracies and cover ups of all time, and successfully "tricked" Democrats into supporting his military interventions.

        1. Tony   7 years ago

Do you suppose Russian likes its puppets to be intelligent?

        2. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

That dichotomy is one of the funniest things about the lefties.

Trump is stupid: Trump is mastermind behind stealing the first election in US history from their genius queen

          1. Tony   7 years ago

Clearly you need to educate yourself about what is actually believed to be going on. Nobody thinks Trump is a genius, and doesn't need to be for this story.

            1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

So he must be stupid. That stupid Trump beat the genius Hillary.

That stupid Trump is rolling back government at a pace not seen in 50+ years.

That stupid Trump is coordinating the defeat of ISIS where Bush, Obama, Putin, and Syria could not.

That stupid Trump has lefties so mad and insane that they will lose a massive number of seats in Congress this November because voters are sick of Democrat bullshit.

That stupid Trump has formerly hot chicks that are as close to "10s" as possible, admitting that he banged them giving him a 5 dicks up rating.

More like stupid lefties, which includes Tony.

              1. Kivlor   7 years ago

That stupid Trump is coordinating the defeat of ISIS where Bush, Obama, Putin, and Syria could not.

To be fair, I think Putin would have ended this long ago if we hadn't been propping up the opposition against Assad.

                1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Kivlor, you might be correct on that point.

The Kurds would have been cut off since the Turkish don't like them either.

                  1. Kivlor   7 years ago

It would be hard to predict a lot of the conflict. For example, who knows how things would have gone with the Kurds, without US support. Perhaps the situation with the Turks would be far worse for them now. But then again, without tremendous US Support, they may well have reconciled with Assad and thrown in with him and thus prevented the Turkish invasion in the first place.

              2. Kyfho Myoba   7 years ago

And nobody care about his girlfriends, either.

Gee maybe needlessly confronting and humiliating such a country when it has 20,000 or so deliverable nuclear weapons is a bad idea?

Is Chapman really this dishonest or so stupid that he manages to convince himself of this nonsense.

        1. Kivlor   7 years ago

needlessly confronting and humiliating such a country when it has 20,000 or so deliverable nuclear weapons is a bad idea

This has been my primary objection to most of our interactions with Russia and their former satellites. It's not that we should never stand up to / confront them, but the fact that it always appears needless. WTF does any American care about the Civil War in Syria, and who wins? What is the national interest in intervening there? Same with most of the other places we've been dicking around with them lately.

It may or may not come to light that Trump and his campaign conspired with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election.

Oh, there was definitely collusion all right. Russia hacked the election, installed a puppet in the White House, and continues to direct much of Drumpf's agenda. For example, Tillerson was given the job at State because Putin wanted him there, then fired when he would no longer cooperate.

But don't lose all hope. American hero Robert Mueller is working overtime to assemble an ironclad case for impeachment. We libertarians need to do our part by voting Democrat in November so we can have a Congress ready to stand up to Russia.

Even funnier than the fact that Trump will be reelected is that the democrats will lose a bunch of seats on the Senate and House in election 2018.

I can't wait to remind you in November. Democrats are guaranteed to take the House, and your prediction will look pretty stupid.

        1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

So you will remind me of what I said when Democrats lose more seats?

So when he kicked out 60 Russian diplomats, was that the appeasement part, or the being a puppet part? Because I could have sworn that it was sold as being the "reckless Trump risking war with Russia" part.

    1. Rhywun   7 years ago

Apparently he only did it for appearances' sake. Then he dialled up Putin and gave him a reach-around over the phone to make up for it.

  12. Kivlor   7 years ago

But when it comes to Putin, Trump doesn't come across as fierce or demanding. He comes across as scared.

Indeed. The attack against Syria--a nation supported by Russia with Russian troops stationed in it--last week was really just a sign of Trump being too scared to stand up to Putin.

"Not least important, the Russians interfered in the 2016 election?which Dick Cheney said could "be considered an act of war.""

The Russian "interference" in the US 2016 Presidential election is not anything that the US itself hasn't done in other countries.

    1. Kivlor   7 years ago

Yeah, I like where Cheney is going with this--not that he really cares about the logical implications of his statement.

If it's an act of war to interfere in another states elections, and the US has been doing so to countless countries for decades then our actions have been acts of war; ad we can't go to war without Congressional approval, then it logically follows the CIA is engaged in illegal, unconstitutional behavior and is going to have to stop any such activities without first running it past Congress...

    2. Tony   7 years ago

So it was OK for the US to do that?

So it is OK? Any foreign actor with sufficient means and will can simply choose our president going forward? Perfectly fine?

          1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Since you didn't have a problem with when Obama was doing, it must be fine.

I personally am fine with Russian whistleblowers exposing Democrat corruption. The media sure would not do it.

We all know that you're the moron who cannot even handle the truth.

Its really a mental condition with you lefties.

              2. Sevo   7 years ago

What's Tony's response when caught bullshitting once more?

                "You're such a fucking moron it's painful."
                You lost, loser.

      3. Kyfho Myoba   7 years ago

Of COURSE it's OK for the US to interfere in foreign elections. We're better than they are. Everyone knows it.

    Who the fuck is Chapman?

  15. Tony   7 years ago

Given the sorts of behavior Trump is willing to publicly display or boast about, one must wonder just how bad the things are that Russia is blackmailing him over. Yikes am I right?

    1. cereal_shake   7 years ago

      Stop trying so hard.

      1. Tony   7 years ago

Stop defending Trump. You can't possibly believe it's going to end well.

        1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Trump is going down as one of the best presidents in 50 years. Its all going great.

  16. TheZeitgeist   7 years ago

WTF? Lemme see here. When Lightworker ran things he sent the troll out for appeasement a "reset." Was heard once on open-mike talking about flexibility on nuclear weapons "after the election." Got off-ramped to irrelevance by Russia via Syrian red lines. Watched in stupor as Russia broke INF treaty with new cruise missile. Watched in more stupor as Russia straight-up-WWII-style annexed Crimea. Stupor continued as Russia compromised all of eastern Ukraine, featuring among other events Russians blowing away airliner of NATO-ally flag carrier.

Since Trump's been Prez facts on the ground for Russians include several dozen of their off-the-book style peeps killed in Syria and blinked as cruise missiles got up in their supposed controlled airspace in Syria cooking Syrian pals.

    If anything Putin misses Barry.

    1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Under Block-yo-Momma, Putin seized The Crimea and the eastern parts of Ukraine. It was a windfall for Putin's domestic popularity.

Putin is less popular these days.

Maybe its Russians and Syrians could not defeat ISIS then America and its local allies have ISIS on the ropes.

Maybe its America shot over 100 missiles into Syria protected by Russia technology and not a single missile was shot down by that Russian technology.

      1. Kyfho Myoba   7 years ago

Nobody knows whether or not any of this stuff is true. Syria/Russia claims over 2/3 shot down, US claims zero shot down. Nobody yet on the ground that both sides accept as impartial to make the call, although US Govt probably would not accept anyone that disagreed with them.

    2. Kivlor   7 years ago

Probably. Although I'm not sure anyone should have been surprised about the new cruise missile. We backed out of the treaty banning anti-ICBM programs back in the early 2000's and when we started installing said developments near Russia, Putin was quite clear that the Russians would be deploying their own developments in response to it. This is likely a part of that response, and as much as I don't like Barry and am glad he's gone, there is almost nothing he could have done to stop it.

We pushed Russia into a corner, and she's going to do things to give herself breathing room. No shock there.

      1. TheZeitgeist   7 years ago

Barry did try something though; he went the appeasement route and scrapped those close-to-Russia European-based interceptors, mid-construction. End result is Russians have new cruise missile, primarily for NATO/European targets, and there is no ballistic intercept capability in Europe. Bravo Barry, clap-clap.

Trump has 'threatened North Korea with destruction. He's denounced the "brutal and corrupt Iranian regime."'

So Chapman ignores North Korea's nuclear threats to America, and pretends the Iranian regime is not brutal and corrupt. And he wants us to stop thinking rationally and believe that this is unbiased reporting from Free Minds!

It's seriously regrettable to see Reason has abandoned Free Minds, joined the MSM and continues to publish fake news like this.

  18. Kyfho Myoba   7 years ago

    > It may or may not come to light that Trump and his campaign conspired with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election.

No, it definitely won't. We already know without any doubt that HRC is far, far more involved with Russia via Uranium One than Trump ever could be. The "pee dossier" is obviously disinformation, and we know that the alleged "victim" of an alleged nerve agent worked very closely with Christopher Steele, the creator/confabulator of the "pee dossier". this article is very, very slanted an biased, and in a way that promotes foreign intervention.

    Fuck you, Steve Chapman.

    You're not a libertarian, and you're a very bad reporter/journalist.

    1. LifeStrategies   7 years ago

Kyfho Myoba. Couldn't agree more. Chapman is incredibly biased, how did he ever get a job at Reason?

Why is Chapman allowed to pervert Reason's Free Minds, Free Markets philosophy? Could Chapman actually be a covert part of the swamp that President Trump is trying to drain...

As tzx4 says: As Trump would say . . SAD!

  19. tzx4   7 years ago

Hmm I was hoping for intelligent discussion of the issues presented in the essay. Most of what I got on this thread is, shall I say less than rational, considerate informed adult level writing. As Trump would say . . SAD!

  20. Ecoli   7 years ago

Do you think Chapman would bitch-slap Mike Tyson, or would he appease him?

  21. Star1988   7 years ago

Hmmm ... it appears that Reason is no loner a safe space. Shame on you Steve Chapman for your microaggressions!

  22. Kevin Bjornson   7 years ago

Steve, why are you writing for Reason, when you aren't a libertarian?

I might agree that Reason goes too far in opposing all interventions, but your full-throated call for action against Russia goes too far in the other direction. Perhaps this has escaped your attention, but Russia is a major nuclear power, spanning 9 or 11 times zones, vast territory and natural resources, with a highly educated mostly non-Muslim European population.

In addition, the west faces the major threat of our time, that of Islamist Jihadism. To war against Russia and Jihadists at the same time, would be a multi-front war, for which the US lacks sufficient resources.

Your reflexive opposition to Trump is visceral, based on your emotional reactions to his high testosterone personality. Which you, as a beta male, resent.

  23. Gaear Grimsrud   7 years ago

Read the headline and knew immediately this was Chapman. Is there any lefty progressive talking point he's too embarrassed to regurgitate?

  24. prediksi sydney   7 years ago

Jadi ketika dia mengusir 60 diplomat Rusia, apakah itu bagian peredaan, atau menjadi bagian boneka? Karena saya berani bersumpah bahwa itu dijual sebagai bagian "reckless Trump risking war with Russia".

  25. vek   7 years ago

Soooo he's doing the smart thing by playing ball with Russia... But because the idiotic mob (popular support) is against it it makes him a moron? We have NOTHING to be gained by antagonizing Russia. Some of the other countries he antagonizes we have things to be gained by strong arming them. We can't do that with Russia since the have the 2nd best military on earth, BUT we can benefit a lot if we can get Russia to play ball with us.

Plus evil bastard that he is, Putin is kind of a bad ass. Trump does like bad asses.

So it makes sense, and it's his natural affinity... So whoop-dee-doo. It's a big nothing burger.
