In England, Rawlett School has banned students from having fingernails longer than 1.5 centimeters from the "cuticle, or proximal nail fold." Nails must also be a "neutral or calm" color in order to "limit conflict and ensure consistency."

And, per the CATO Institute study, UK has more freedom than the United States, by several countries [17 to 23].

The beat us out because the Land of the Free still let cops feel inside children's underwear for hidden aspirin...

This royal throne of kings, this sceptered isle, this earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, this other Eden, demi-paradise, this fortress built by Nature for herself against infection and the hand of war, this happy breed of men, this little world, this precious stone set in the silver sea, which serves it in the office of a wall or as a moat defensive to a house, against the envy of less happier lands,--This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England, in all Her ancient splendored majesty commands your nails be cut no longer than 1.5 centimeters from the cuticle or proximal nail fold.

James Connors wrote on Facebook: "I can understand them having rules about wearing nail varnish or nail extensions but to state and limit the exact length of them is a bit draconian and just really petty. How ridiculous."

Nail polish rules are okay, but length is a bridge too far.

Rachel Edney added: "What a silly rule about the nail length. Everyone has different size nails - mine are longer than that without any extra nail at the end."

    Hawt.

John Batman said: "Who on earth is going to go around checking all the pupil's nails with a ruler? What a bizarre, silly and completely unenforceable rule."

In unrelated news, Bruce Wayne concurs.

  7. Longtobefree   7 years ago

Well, since everyone has full and instant access to spectacular health care over there, I would assume those whiners with too long fingers can just drop by surgery and have their fingers trimmed to the proper length. No worries.

  8. Quo Usque Tandem   7 years ago

Just another trivial but daily example of what progressives want us to be.

    1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Progressives see this story as something good while Liberty minded folks tend to see a story like this as abhorrent.

    "limit conflict and ensure consistency."

    Jesus Christ, English people.

  10. Rhywun   7 years ago

I think it would be helpful to know whether this is a public or private school.

    1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Sure. Private schools would clearly have the prerogative to set dress standards as they wish.

Still, one has to question the amount of resources spent on dress codes compared to learning. Kids will always have angst and rebel against rules. That's just what they do. Schools that chase kids down with rules for everything just end up training the kids that rules for everything is good while self-awareness on social standards of respecting yourself are not as important.

      1. Rhywun   7 years ago

The way I read it was some girl probably scratched another girl in the face or something.

But yes, schools like the kids to be uniform. And often I can understand why - it removes a lot of the tedious preening and posturing they're into at that age. And let's be honest, rules don't end outside of school.

"Respecting yourself" can be learned at home.

        1. loveconstitution1789   7 years ago

Yeah, I tend to agree that this was probably because of some incident. Its also not an easy job keeping a couple hundred horned up teenagers focused on education.

With the rules dont end outside of school point, while true, there does seem to be so many more rules these days than when I was in school.

I just feel like bogging kids down with rules for everything trains them to be okay with the Nanny-State.

  11. mpercy   7 years ago

1.5cm from the cuticle?...hell I'm a guy with closely trimmed nails and my nails are 1.3 to 1.4cm from the cuticle (I just checked because this seems like such a small size).

    1. Radioactive   7 years ago

yeah, go around telling everyone you've got big cuticles...does that mean you've got a big Johnson as well? asking for a friend...

  12. Enjoy Every Sandwich   7 years ago

Boy, the Brits are doing their damnedest to make sure that people don't have any weapons, not even fingernails!

  13. Brandybuck   7 years ago

Why the hell measure from the cuticle instead of the distal edge? That just lets smaller students have longer nails than bigger students.
