In England, Rawlett School has banned students from having fingernails longer than 1.5 centimeters from the "cuticle, or proximal nail fold." Nails must also be a "neutral or calm" color in order to "limit conflict and ensure consistency."

Sure. Private schools would clearly have the prerogative to set dress standards as they wish.

Still, one has to question the amount of resources spent on dress codes compared to learning. Kids will always have angst and rebel against rules. That's just what they do. Schools that chase kids down with rules for everything just end up training the kids that rules for everything is good while self-awareness on social standards of respecting yourself are not as important.

But yes, schools like the kids to be uniform. And often I can understand why - it removes a lot of the tedious preening and posturing they're into at that age. And let's be honest, rules don't end outside of school.

"Respecting yourself" can be learned at home.

Yeah, I tend to agree that this was probably because of some incident. Its also not an easy job keeping a couple hundred horned up teenagers focused on education.

With the rules dont end outside of school point, while true, there does seem to be so many more rules these days than when I was in school.

Why the hell measure from the cuticle instead of the distal edge? That just lets smaller students have longer nails than bigger students.
