President Trump will reportedly ease restrictions on exporting American guns.

The ATF and its operations will become legal?

      Hello.

Re Canada: I just avoid hydrogenated stuff where I can. In Canada you don't see 'high fructose corn syrup' I notice in U.S. products. Even foods from the SAME company you won't see it here.

      Interesting.

      1. SIV   8 years ago

        Canada doesn't have sugar tariffs.

        1. Isaac Bartram   8 years ago

They are very low compared to the US.

          1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

The US government pays farmers to grow way too much corn, the excess of which is processed into high-fructose corn syrup and inserted into basically every food product made here. By putting a tariff on cane sugar, the feds are protecting their investment. It's just good business sense!

      2. Bubba Jones   8 years ago

I assume that Canada imports sugar.

        1. Isaac Bartram   8 years ago

Some comes from sugar beets grown in Alberta and Ontario but most comes from imported raw cane sugar refine in Canadian mills.

      3. Chaz   8 years ago

HFCS in Canada is "glucose-fructose" in the ingredient list.

Police in Oklahoma have fatally shot a man for holding a stick.

Sticks and stones can break their bones, so, feared for lives.

I guess white lightning isn't the biggest thrill of all anymore in Oklahoma.

Democrats are asking the Federal Election Company to ban foreign entities from advertising on Twitter and Facebook about politics.

    So... all advertising then?

  4. damikesc   8 years ago

?Democrats are asking the Federal Election Company to ban foreign entities from advertising on Twitter and Facebook about politics.

Shame they weren't so concerned about foreign entities bankrolling Obama's election campaigns.

    1. Conchfritters   8 years ago

But foreign donations to a candidate's family foundation (slush fund), yeah, that's totally on the up and up.

    2. Bee Tagger   8 years ago

You think you can just change established CSS for commenting on links?!

      1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

        I'm blocking him.

    3. mashed potatoes   8 years ago

This seems really silly. Would this prevent campaigns for domestic office to be banned from social media? Cause Americans might see those ads. This thought seems to hold within it that social media is only for americans and any foreign on there is just trying to influence us while, in real life, most social media volume is outside the US and I guess their politicians can't talk politics with them.. there is no US Facebook and Russia Facebook

    4. sharmota4zeb   8 years ago

      1) Remember the Arab Spring and how Americans loved the thought of influencing MENA politics through social media?

      2) Remember Hilary Clinton pushing the reset button with Russia?

      3) Remember when the State Department under Obama gave $350,000 to an Israeli nonprofit that used the money to oppose Netanyahu in the Israeli election?

      4) This summer the Israeli Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism paid for billboards in Israel advocating to change policies at the Western Wall. If money from Americans goes to them, that could violate this new policy of no foreign influence on politics.

      5) Reform Jewish leaders in the USA are rethinking their donations to Israel, because they do not like Israeli policies regarding the Western Wall and conversions to Judaism.

The left does not have a leg to stand on regarding this issue. I'm fine with private people donating to influence politics in other countries. Heck, that's what donors to Amnesty International do. I think it's bad form for national governments to try to influence politics in other countries with funds.

Hey, ENB -- It is the Federal Election COMMISSION. You know, the government agency that has a bunch of democrats on it who want to ban right-wing sites on the internet because they believe that political speech should only be left-wing.

            1. Crusty Juggler - Lawbertarian   8 years ago

It has nothing to do with the channel TNT, which produces amazing shows like Animal Kingdom* and The Last Ship.

    Undercover With the Alt-Right

What he learned while undercover is one part of a shocking, comprehensive new report from Hope Not Hate that sheds light on the strange landscape of the alt-right, the much discussed, little understood and largely anonymous far-right movement that exists mostly online and that has come to national attention in part because of its support for Donald Trump.

As a result of the growing influence of the far-right social-media ecosystem, once-moribund hate groups in both the United States and Europe ? groups that mostly existed long before "alt-right" entered the vernacular ? are enjoying a striking uptick in recruitment.

    1. Crusty Juggler - Lawbertarian   8 years ago

The alt-light promotes a slightly softer set of messages. Its figures ? such as Milo Yiannopoulos, Paul Joseph Watson and Mike Cernovich ? generally frame their work as part of an effort to defend "the West" or "Western culture" against supposed left-liberal dominance, rather than making explicitly racist appeals. Many of them, in fact, have renounced explicit racism and anti-Semitism, though they will creep up to the line of explicitly racist speech, especially when Islam and immigration are concerned.

This apparent moderation partly explains why they tend to have much bigger online audiences than even the most important alt-right figures ? and why Hope Not Hate describes them as "less extreme, more dangerous." Alt-light sites like Breitbart, formerly home to Mr. Yiannopoulos, as well as Prison Planet, where Mr. Watson is editor at large, draw millions of readers and are key nodes in a hyperkinetic network that is endlessly broadcasting viral-friendly far-right news, rumors and incitement.

Fluent in the language of online irony and absurdism, and adept at producing successful memes, alt-lighters have pulled off something remarkable: They've made far-right ideas hip to a subset of young people, and framed themselves as society's forgotten underdogs. The alt-light provides its audience easy scapegoats for their social, economic and sexual frustrations: liberals and feminists and migrants and, of course, globalists.

      1. Rhywun   8 years ago

        supposed left-liberal dominance

        Never change, New York Times.

        1. Cyto   8 years ago

The way he describes "alt-right" sites makes me think he's never heard of things like HuffingtonPost, Moveon.org, Daily Beast, alternet, truthout, daily kos, think progress, vox, mother jones, the intercept.....

      2. Red Rocks White Privilege   8 years ago

They've made far-right ideas hip to a subset of young people, and framed themselves as society's forgotten underdogs.

Leftists continue to harbor the delusion that they're still society's marginalized and under-represented rather than the cultural status quo, and that speaking out against left-wing shibboleths is now speaking "truth to power."

      3. Scotticus Finch   8 years ago

        Alt-light sites

So... "heavy"? Seriously, this word can't possibly mean anything.

        1. Cyto   8 years ago

Sure it does. It refers to sites that don't hew to the progressive line, but can't be explicitly tied to racism, sexism or homophobia. So the implicitly tie them to racism, sexism and homophobia.

          1. Tejicano   8 years ago

Exactly. The fact that they don't say "it" has to mean that it is the one thing they are dying to say.

            "Projection" much?

        2. chemjeff   8 years ago

"Alt-light" refers to people who are pro-Trumpian in general, but who aren't doctrinaire Richard Spencer types on wanting a whites-only ethnostate or kicking out all the Jews or some such.

      4. chemjeff   8 years ago

generally frame their work as part of an effort to defend "the West" or "Western culture" against supposed left-liberal dominance

Do they not realize that concepts like socialism and communism are also a part of "the West" and "Western culture"? Marx and Engels were straight white male Europeans after all.

They are not interested in defending "Western culture". They are interested in re-defining "Western culture" to mean right-wing ideology.

    2. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

the alt-right, the much discussed, little understood and largely anonymous far-right movement that exists mostly online and that has come to national attention in part because of its support for Donald Trump.

Props to the NYT: this is a precisely worded description. I'd say even Gilmore wouldn't quibble with this, but that might be going too far.

      1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Except the alt-right is an anonymous far-left movement that supports socialist revolution for racial purposes.

    3. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

I feel like he just got a sweet trip around the world in a lot of ways. Even the article admits the movement exists mostly online. He didn't have to go to London/New York/etc. He could have just shitposted on /pol/ for a year and known probably more.

Unions Are Training Hotel Workers to Face Down Immigration Raids

Hotel workers in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York have been gathering for training sessions recently on how to handle visits from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The sessions, organized by the labor union Unite Here!, teach workers how to effectively stonewall ICE agents, emphasizing employees' right to refuse to answer questions or show identification.

Unions also are trying to use collective bargaining to tie companies' hands. Unite Here says curbing collaboration with ICE will be a priority in bargaining for the 270,000 hotel, casino, and food-service workers it represents, almost half of whose contracts expire within the next year.

'Netflix for theaters' sending industry into a frenzy

The chief executive of MoviePass took a sleepy, little-known, 20,000-member movie subscription service on Aug. 15 and injected pure adrenaline into its business plan.

Lowe cut the monthly, no-commitment membership fee to $9.95 from $40 to $50, enabling movie buffs to gorge themselves on as many flicks as their schedules could fit for less than a 10-spot.

In just three weeks, membership spiked to more than 400,000, Lowe told The Post in a recent interview

    Interesting!

    1. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

Is it legal to inject pure adrenaline into a business plan? Surely there are safety and labor regulations in place...

    4. Chipper Morning, Mean Girl   8 years ago

Where can you see a movie for $8.65? Around here, movies are like $13. At least, that is how much It cost me.

      1. Crusty Juggler - Lawbertarian   8 years ago

Seems like you're a prime candidate for the service.

        1. Cyto   8 years ago

It is really interesting. But the question is.... are there 12 movies a year I'd like to see? We are more in the 4 or 5 movies camp. If that.

But a lot of that is cost. So I say "wait for redbox" if the movie doesn't look like it needs the theater treatment.

For a young couple, this is likely a no-brainer. Or middle-aged cat ladies.

          1. damikesc   8 years ago

...or get an Amazon Fire stick and jailbreak it and download a service that shows movies in theatres....

But that'd be piracy and we know that is all the way wrong.

      2. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

Matinee screenings. A few weeks after the movie is released, so there's hardly anyone in the theater. It's the only way to see movies on the big screen now.

  24. Jerryskids   8 years ago

A former North Chicago police officer remained in Lake County jail Monday afternoon after surrendering Friday on charges including official misconduct for allegedly soliciting prostitution while on duty, according to authorities.

A *former* cop, "while on duty". What exactly are the duties of a former cop? You mean he was a cop when he committed the "alleged" crimes, the fact that they fired his ass is all the proof you need he's guilty and that he's actually going to get treated like a mundane. But it won't be a cop going down, it'll be an ex-cop. No cop has ever been convicted of anything in this country, only ever ex-cops.

    Americas First

Almost nobody ? no conservative ? has anything good to say lately about Mexico, which produces a great deal of oil but whose most visible exports are Mexicans, mostly desperately poor ones, and drugs. (And, of course, Mexicans carrying drugs.) The lawlessness in the cartel-controlled parts of Mexico, the continued flood of illegals across the border (Trump's boasting notwithstanding, illegal border crossings were up sharply in the early summer), the Mexican government's inability or disinclination to do much about these, and the anti-immigration and anti-foreign sentiment currently gripping much of the electorate have many Americans less than eager to see Washington investing any additional time or resources in problems south of the border. A Marshall Plan for Mexico? Good luck selling that. But something along those lines would in fact be an intelligent investment in North American stability, security, and prosperity.

Wrong-o, Kev-o - America should spend more money in Afghanistan, where are true interests lie.

    1. Hateful Reactionary   8 years ago

How about recognition that big government spending projects would do no more for Mexico than anywhere else. Kev NR should know that our dollars are wasted in Mexico or Afghanistan.

But we must do SOMETHING? Something other than legalize meth and coke and heroin which would eliminate every cartel from the earth.

      1. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

There is much the United States could do to help Mexico ? and to help itself at the same time. The first item on the agenda should be reforming U.S. drug laws in the direction of liberalization and decriminalization, thus robbing the narcotics cartels of their principal raison d'?tre and their most important revenue stream. With that done, the United States could help Mexico develop a plan for demilitarizing its law-enforcement programs and drug-interdiction activities. (We might want to come up with a plan like that for ourselves.) We should expand our already deep economic and governmental ties with an eye toward helping Mexico to rein in corruption and money-laundering ? if you want to revisit NAFTA, that is one area that could in fact use some attention. We should help Mexico build more effective institutions and improve existing ones, securing not only physical security and the rule of law but also more accountable and representative government.

Framing it as a Mexican Marshall Plan was too much - or perhaps necessary to reach his conservative audience? - but his actual proposals sound cheap and effective. He's right that, if the govt truly wanted to address the Mexico Problem, this is what they would be doing.

        1. damikesc   8 years ago

Small problem --- only way to do it is through the Mexican government, who are less trust-worthy than most governments.

We could just set the cash on fire and have similar effects.

According to Recep Erdogan, Trump called to apologize to him after those protesters outside the Turkish embassy rudely scuffed up his bodyguards' fists with their faces:

    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb.....tatorship/

Erdogan's a bastard of course so take those comments as you will, but I could definitely see it. Even when the assaults were a big story Trump didn't so much as tweet about it, he'd rather suck up to dicks like Erdogan than support his own citizens' right to not be assaulted in the street by thugs.

    1. colorblindkid   8 years ago

A similar ruckus happened under Obama, with a similar sweeping under the rug with a soft condemnation. Trump's spokesman denied this call happened. I think even Trump wouldn't apologize as implied. Erdogan knows that people will believe it, though, and Erdogan isn't an idiot like Trump is.

    2. Domestic Dissident   8 years ago

Apparently Incirlik Air Base is as important as Saudi Arabia oil, because Erdogan can get away with pretty much anything and he obviously knows it.

      1. damikesc   8 years ago

    1. Libertarian   8 years ago

One man's stick is another man's spear.

    2. Cyto   8 years ago

The article was woefully short on details. It just said "holding a stick". Did he brandish it? Because brandishing is dangerous. Or did he fail to respond to simultaneously shouted commands that come through as incoherent jibberish? Because that only gets you about 1.5 to 3 seconds of leeway.

We need to wait until the facts come out before exonerating the officer.

      1. mad.casual   8 years ago

We need to wait until the facts come out before exonerating the officer.

Fuck that! After a hit-and-run, unless the story ends with him atop a pile of bodies screaming 'kill me' before the stick is wrestled away from him, I blame the police and white supremacists.

But, more "seriously", at least one story paints the victim as deaf/handicapped. I, obviously, don't want anyone to get shot, but I hope to God they shot a blind man with a cane.

Another former Fox News commentator, Scottie Nell Hughes, is suing the company over allegations of sexual harassment and sex-based discrimination.

I am shocked - shocked!!!!!! - that a bottle-blonde who sold her soul to a news network would agree to sell her body as well.

    Shocked!

Because of your comment that I went to read the article.

Now something just doesn't add up. She says she was raped by this man, then she had a years-long sexual relationship with him? Somehow that just doesn't add up for me.

In Tajikistan, authorities can confiscate food from funerals or weddings that they deem to be too lavish.

  44. Rebel Scum   8 years ago

    Canada is banning trans fats.

And making saturated animal fats mandatory?

  45. Vernon Depner   8 years ago

Trans fats are artificial, inedible, poisonous substances. They are not "food" in any sense of the word and have no place in foodstuffs. Libertarians should not object to them being banned from foods any more than they would object to any other toxic contaminate being banned.

    1. mad.casual   8 years ago

At first glance, the list of words you either don't understand or are patently wrong about:
      artificial
      inedible
      poisonous
      food
      foodstuffs
      Libertarians
      toxic
      contaminate

I'd say I'm surprised that you were able to fit so many into so few sentences, but I get the impression that you're generally able to achieve such feats.

It would be all in fun except the article, while more accurate correct in some places still makes some pretty egregious faux pas:

A steady intake of trans fats raises LDL (bad) cholesterol, especially the small, dense cholesterol particles that are more damaging to blood vessels. Trans fat also lowers HDL cholesterol, the so-called good type that moves cholesterol from the arteries to the liver for disposal.

Rand's point is to move to a more free-market oriented system as opposed to gov't bureaucracy. Let's make the healthcare market free again.
