Brickbat: Constitutional Scholar

"There is a fine line between freedom of speech and hate speech," said Lori Stettler, vice chancellor of student affairs at Southern Illinois University. "Once that line is crossed, there is zero tolerance." Stettler tells the student newspaper that any student taking part in a hateful demonstration will face disciplinary action.

"Attention! All Neo-Nazi demonstrators are hereby ordered to disperse. Please return to your dorms and allow your reactionary racialist views to fester and stew without any possibility of external analysis, intervention or criticism for the next 25 years before bursting out into the public square once more like termites swarming out from behind the drywall that concealed their colony's growth. Thank you for your cooperation."
Nice...
One of the major practical reasons for free speech. Is it allows people to discuss their ideas and have their arguments lose and face correction.
Drone strikes pending.
Its like those white road signs in Taxifornia that say "speed enforced by aircraft". I was always waiting for bombers to attack my car as I was driving thru that state at 85mph. Now they can use drones.
"Everyone should be educated on the difference between free speech and hate speech," Stettler said. "Everybody has a right to their own opinion, and it is our responsibility to have open dialogue and conversation."
Oh please do educate us....
I went and found the policies webpage they mentioned. Was not able to find the words "hate speech" in either the section on demonstrations or student conduct.

Oh... that's one of those "self-evident" truths... you know, like "all men are crated equal".
You are welcome to have opinions like "The minimum wage should be $16.00 instead of $15.00". And they have a responsibility to have open dialog and conversation about your controversial opinions. So if you think that the Sanders plan for nationalizing healthcare doesn't go far enough, please come to the public square.
On the other hand...
You do not have a right to Hate Speech ideas, like "I think we should enforce our immigration laws as they exist and increase the number of work visas allowed." This is not speech, but violence and will not be tolerated.
Likewise, you do not have the right to hate speech like "we should end the program of extrajudicial killings of Americans via executive order..." Oh, wait... I don't like the president we have now... so that's probably OK. In fact, now that Trump is president it is probably hate speech to support the war on terror. Hold on a sec, I'll have to get back to you on that one.
Exactly, It is always those who want to restrict hate speech who define what constitutes hate speech,
Well, shit, that's been the problem all along, that "all men are crated equal" thing. Somebody needs to explain to our lords and masters that they've been mis-reading that line.
"Everybody has a right to their own opinion, and it is our responsibility to have open dialogue and conversation. as long as everybody agrees with me. Your disagreement is hate-speech."
"There is a fine line between freedom of speech and hate speech," said Lori Stettler, vice chancellor of student affairs at Southern Illinois University. "Once that line is crossed, there is zero tolerance."
What a hateful thing to say - - - -
"There is a fine line between freedom of speech and hate speech..."
And we will constantly move that line until you have no idea at all what's allowed. So just shut up and enjoy your indoctrination.
I am so NOT looking forward to sending my son to college in 4 years.
And we have to PAY for this indoctrination.
send him to tech school instead. he will probably make more money, it will cost less, and little indoctrination besides the govt required "interpersonal relationships" and harassment training in order to receive a certification.
We have nothing to hate but hate itself.
"There is a fine line between freedom of speech and hate speech," said Lori Stettler, vice chancellor of student affairs at Southern Illinois University.
A wannabe-tyrant says "what"? Contrary to your incorrect opinion, there is no such thing as "hate-speech" or "free-speech". There is only the freedom of speech, and you either have it, or you don't.
"Once that line is crossed, there is zero tolerance."
I agree. You don't strike me as a tolerant person.
any student taking part in a hateful demonstration will face disciplinary action.
Define "hateful". One of the logical problems with your position (constitutional issue aside) is that "hate" is subjective.
Of course, she wants to decide the line.
Pbbt. She's been ordained from on high. Want's to decide? No. It is her right and responsibility to determine the limits of proper speech and thought. It isn't a duty she can shirk, even if she should care to. It is her calling.
This vice chancellor is coming from the ultimate pit of white privilege. Just call her a racist. Once that happens there is no debate, she will be shunned, anything she says afterwards will be discounted (because she is a racist), and she can go back to her racist white cracker family.
