For 30 years, Lexa King has cultivated the azaleas outside her Atlanta home. But someone recently made an anonymous complaint to city code enforcement. A code enforcement officer cited her for having an overgrown yard. She faces up to 60 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

    Christ what an asshole!

Again is this something worth fining and jailing someone over? Who is harmed?

    1. ace_m82   8 years ago

      1. Neighbor's feelings.

      2. Government enforcer's feelings (if he doesn't get to stomp someone's rights soon).

"She's got so many azalea bushes, her yard's going to look like Gone With the Wind come spring. I don't like azaleas and I sure didn't like that movie, the way they made slavery look like a big happy tea party." ?The Help by Kathryn Stockett

      Pie, anyone?

    2. Radioactive   8 years ago

She's got so many azalea bushes, her yard's going to look like Gone With the Wind come spring
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!

      1. Number 7   8 years ago

Actually I would have gone with 'what a dump'.

  3. The Hyperbole   8 years ago

King said she's fighting a bigger battle to protect the quirkiness of Atlanta's Candler Park neighborhood

I was on her side til right about here.

  4. Libertarian   8 years ago

"They said it was messy, said it was overgrown," King told Klaus.

"I said, 'Well, that's just your opinion, man.'"

    1. Fuck you, Shikha (Nunya)   8 years ago

      Get a job, Lebowski!

      1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

That azalea bush really tied the neighborhood together, did it not.

  5. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

"We asked him for a definition of excessive, which he could not provide," King said.

"I shall not attempt further to define excessive but I know it when I see it."

    1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Every offense in Georgia is a misdemeanor or felony, so this "offense" was a misdemeanor and that is clearly excessive. Georgia does not have infractions (penalty being only monetary) like some states.

      1. Roger Wilco   8 years ago

This is not correct. Speeding tickets, parking fines, other petty moving violations are infractions, for example.

  6. Cyto   8 years ago

Looking at her lawn in the clip, I thought the azalea part was just a line - she's got overgrown ornamental grasses and flowers all over the front yard that do look kinda messy.

But no! She has a side yard of shrubs and trees that looks exactly like a side yard full of azaleas and trees. That's what they cited her for. They've kinda lost their minds.

That area is a normal yard style in Georgia - the wooded area with azalea and dogwood understories. Common as red clay throughout the south.

    1. Kivlor   8 years ago

Yeah, that was my thought when I opened the link and saw the picture. Like it or not, most cities would cite her over the grass / weeds that are obviously out of control. But the azaleas are the problem? WTF?

    2. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

I would bet, its the non-Georgians moving into her area that had a problem with her yard.

On that note, there are plenty of Georgia natives that have fascist streaks and are busybodies.

      1. DesigNate   8 years ago

Wait, isn't shriek in Georgia? Being a complete asshole to your neighbors is right up his alley...

  7. Bob K   8 years ago

In Chuck Schumer is still an asshole news:

    1. Scarecrow Repair & Chippering   8 years ago

Saw that. Politicians are frauds. They see actors pretending to be CEOs by barking orders and firing people and think they can do the same. By frauds, I mean to themselves, to reality, to the world.

      Buncha fucking frauds.

  8. Longtobefree   8 years ago

    "You didn't grow that."
    Fine Obama.

  10. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

An "anonymous complaint" often just means a code enforcement person was driving around looking for revenue-farming opportunities. I, uh, heard.

    1. KerryW   8 years ago

Maybe, maybe not. In our city, city staff will not cite a violation they happen to see unless a citizen makes a complaint.

  11. Roger Wilco   8 years ago

As hopeful as it is to see the owner fight against the citation, her neighbors supporting the dismissal of the complaint, and even the anchor for supporting the fight against government Brickbats, I can guarantee that all of these people actually support the stupid "yard beauty" city codes. Candler Park is NOT a bastion of libertarian individuality.

    1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Local oppressive regulations are great until they affect you, which is what these little fascists don't think about.

The South is full of Democrats who are okay with Nanny-State rules and Republicans who are fine with Police-State rules. Together they make rules that cause situations like this.

  12. Roger Wilco   8 years ago

Wait, I know what she can do... she should let the bushes grow so that their main trunks are more than 6". Then they will be classified as trees, and then the Trees Atlanta gestapo and the City can fight each other over which code takes precedence!

  13. Dillinger   8 years ago

    >>>I don't like azaleas...

    fuck you. move.
