Campus Hysteria Reaches New Heights at Evergreen State After White 'Day of Absence'
Even progressive professors can't escape the wrath of student activists.
Evergreen State College, located in

Olympia, Washington, has just reopened after student protests culminated in death threats and property damage that shut down the school last Thursday. This campus crusade gone horribly wrong was brought on by an innocuous email from a professor who objected to an event—a "Day of Absence" where white students and faculty were encouraged leave campus for a day—organized by a student group. What ensued illustrates a worrying trend on college campuses, where even progressive-leaning professors like Evergreen State's Bret Weinstein are feeling the wrath of "social-justice"-promoting student activists.
Whereas many of the headline-grabbing incidents at colleges lately have involved protests of conservative speakers, this incident was markedly different. In this case, a student group asked that their white peers and instructors take a "Day of Absence" from campus life to "explore issues of race, equity, allyship, inclusion and privilege." (The "Day of Absence" is traditionally a day where students and faculty of color leave campus to highlight their important roles at the school.) After hearing about the event, Weinstein, a white biology professor, sent the organizers an email expressing his disagreement with the new "Day of Absence" idea and his intent to not participate.
"There is a huge difference between a group or coalition deciding to voluntarily absent themselves from a shared space to highlight their vital and under-appreciated roles… and a group or coalition encouraging another group to go away," wrote Weinstein in his March 15 email. "The first is a forceful call to consciousness which is, of course, crippling to the logic of oppression. The second is a show of force, and an act of oppression in and of itself." Weinstein went on to end his email on a diplomatic note, with an offer to organize an event discussing race issues "through a scientific/evolutionary lens."
The "Day of Absence" at Evergreen State came and went. Weinstein and his students' presence on campus evidently did not disrupt the event, because it was not until over a month later, in late May, when a group of around 50 students angrily confronted Weinstein over his lack of participation and demanded that he resign.
Weinstein attempted to engage them, but students repeatedly interrupted him and expressed no desire to have a dialogue; they wanted an apology for his "racist" email, not an explanation. Weinstein attempted to give them the latter with little success. Evergreen's police chief told Weinstein he should leave campus because it was no longer safe for him there.
Protests further escalated later that week, when hundreds of students took over the library building to confront administrators and barricaded themselves inside with furniture to block police from entering. The school was eventually shut down when someone called in and claimed they were going to shoot up the campus.
The events at Evergreen should serve as a wake up call to moderate liberals, both students and faculty, who may have refrained from criticism of these campus crusaders when people like alt-right firebrands Milo Yiannopoulos or Gavin McInnes were the targets of their wrath. Lest anyone doubts Weinstein's progressive bona fides (he describes himself as "deeply progressive"), one needs to look no further than the last time he caused controversy and faced harassment from college students: he wrote an article exposing racism and sexual abuse at a fraternity party. Perhaps "deeply progressive" just isn't progressive enough these days. Equal opportunity outrage has arrived and it's coming to a school near you.
Unfortunately, the Evergreen administration has shown nothing but ineptitude in this face of all this hysteria. There are calls from some professors to investigate Weinstein for "endangering" students, showing that they are more concerned about saving their heads from people who have clearly lost theirs than taking a stand for the right to free expression. Never mind that it was in fact Weinstein who was endangered by the students, not the other way around. College President George Bridges, who allowed himself to be bullied by the student protesters, has declined to take disciplinary action against any student involved and seems to have jumped on the bandwagon of the misguided faculty who think Weinstein is the problem.
Meanwhile, students who want no part of this manufactured-outrage on campus are the ones who truly suffer, deprived of educational opportunities as staff struggle not to offend those who could bring campus wrath—and possibly a federal inquiry—their way.

Can we get a progressive day of absence?
It would certainly be, uh, progress.
Silence and discretion are precisely what we need on our college campuses, particularly when stirring up "controversy" spills over into the dissemination of illegal speech. Surely no one here would dare to defend the "First Amendment dissent" of a single, isolated judge in our nation's leading criminal "satire" case? See the documentation at:

I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.
This is what I do... http://www.webcash10.com
No, you don't and no, it isn't.
The last thing ANYONE would want to do is to bring competitors into their own market when their product is a service, fucking moron.

Start with a decade and see how it goes.
So you're the new 'Robbie'. Good article. No 'to be sures'.
Robby bout to lose his job?
Robby is on sabbatical to "write a book" (read: spend more time with Dat Hurr).
It's true, that writing a book can sometimes go badly...
But he is really playing that new Zelda game.
I know, but will the job be there for him when it's over?
It is kind of refreshing to read a Soave-ish article without all the equivocating bullshit. I'm liking this Ben Haller intern already.
As an intern, he hasn't been invited to the cocktail parties yet. Otherwise, Soave would be sweating into his martini that he's less libertarian or has less of a spine than the intern.
I don't think even Robby could perform the mental gymnastics to find anything to equivocate about. These people are segregationists, and Weinstein made the mistake of being old enough to remember the civil rights movement against segregation. The funny thing is, he truly believed he was on the side of progressive orthodoxy when he wrote the email. But genuine cults don't leave room for disagreement, so he had to be excommunicated. This, along with the Laci Green episode, are excellent case studies of cult ostracization.
But is Weinstein old enough to remember that before the civil rights movement progressives were indeed segregationists?
If you're in D.C., the cocktail parties rain from the sky like manna. You'd need to be dead not to end up in one!
...and perhaps not even then. http://www.npr.org/2013/07/14/.....ablishment
"Tim Russert, this giant in Washington, I call him the mayor of Official Washington, he dies in the prime of his life. And there was a state-funeral-like scene where all of the brand names, all of the tribes convened. You had the Democrats, the Republicans, the Clintons, the newscasters, Barbara Walters, I mean everyone was there. And I remember sitting there, and I was struck by how this memorial service for a beloved newsman could so quickly degenerate into a networking oppportunity. People were throwing business cards around, people were trying to get booked on various shows. The funeral as cocktail party."
But he managed to work in the word "racist" once, so he's at least showing some promise.
So you're the new 'Robbie'. Good article.
Agreed. But how's your hair, Ben?
Even jellyfish have stronger backbones than college administrators.
you're assuming they don't want this to happen. Like the BAMN sympathizer mayor or Berkeley
it's as easy as call the police and then expel them.
Shit like this happens because they enable it.
How do administrators benefit from this? I have a hard time believing that they want it to happen because it makes them look stupid and spineless. They certainly do enable it, but that doesn't necessarily mean they want this.
Or maybe the do want it in a way. There are quite a few schools who market themselves at least in part as places with lots of opportunities for student activism so all the kids who wish it was the 60s can come and have their little tantrums without facing actual consequences.
What confuses me is that these places are intended to be places where people learn skills to move into the real world and provide a living for themselves and a service to others.
How does 'activism' or any of the rest of the progressive meme serve those ends and why do administrators put up with this kind of insanity when it directly detracts from their only reason for existing?
These institutions have zero reasons to let these students continue at their institution. Expelling them would, in fact, be the wise move since these people have proven they are not there to be educated, learn a skill, or engage in critical thought. They are actual terrorists, and while I know we're loathe to use that word for citizens it is what it is. Is there any question that the professor in question, as well as the majority of the not-insane student body, is thoroughly in fear going forward?
How could you continue forward on your degree plan at a school that does not punish people for taking over school buildings, shutting down the entire campus, all the while calling in threats to literally murder you? Why would you pay that institution money for that 'service'? It's bad for literally everyone except the nut jobs.
And furthermore, why should those nut jobs be awarded the opportunity for a degree in the first place? They have proven themselves to unworthy of higher education, period. I sincerely doubt any of them are majoring in anything worthwhile, and even if they are they would poison whatever industry they decide to try and get into.
It's amazing that some people think colleges give two shits about teaching anybody anything.
They want money. That is all.
It doesn't hurt their bottom line to kick out people who are causing literal property damage and putting them in the national spotlight as a place not to send your kids because of lock downs and death threats. As a matter of fact, that's the opposite of a good thing for your financials.
When your reputation becomes 'school where rioters are allowed to riot and disrupt class' I have a feeling your enrollment will go down, and your transfer rate will increase. That's bad for your bottom line.
That was my thought. Who would want a school with this reputation on their children's resumes? Surely schools like this and Olympia are disqualifications for hiring?
"What confuses me is that these places are intended to be places where people learn skills to move into the real world and provide a living for themselves and a service to others."
Well, I think this is part of the disconnect. Learning skills is only part of the reason to go to college. The other part is for students to become more fully developed ("well rounded") individuals. That is why science students have to take gender studies classes, and history students have to take science classes.
Gender studies? I would think a course in phrenology would be more worthwhile .
Phrenology is more based in reality.
I'm proposing a cross disciplinary study, Gender based phrenology...it's where I feel your lady bumps and then describe your personality!
Yes, it's known as a liberal arts education and it's the very type of education I received. We took philosophy, science, economics, and a lot of other random classes that I think have actually served me pretty well over the years. 'Gender studies' wasn't on the curriculum, but this was ten+ years ago and a lot has apparently changed since then.
If I had it all to do over I would skip the big four-year university and sign up for some technical courses and save myself a couple years and thousands of dollars. I dare say a decent majority of current students don't benefit from any of that "well rounded" crap.
Frankly I agree, although some of those philosophy and economics courses I wouldn't trade for anything.
I got an advanced degree in medieval literature, and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
But, I paid for it myself, and I didn't do it under any illusion that it would further my job prospects.
Medieval literature, eh? So, like, all three books of it? ^_-
Lots of sex though, same as it ever was.
Physics for poets isn't science. It's barely past the baking soda volcano stage. There is a gross asymmetry in the requirements for each and it does a disservice to the supposedly 'well-rounded' lib arts student.
That's not how academics see it at all, and that's a big part of the disconnect that makes it hard for outsiders to understand what they do.
The modern university is still, first and foremost, the descendent of medieval universities. The basic culture is still very much "this is a place for people to retire from the world and pursue "pure-knowledge-for-its-own-sake." That this place is largely for the idle members of the upper class is widely understood and generally taken for granted.
These "widely understood and generally taken for granted" elements are never spoken of directly. For this reason, the culture of the university has been poisoned by Marxism.
And I don't mean "all professors are Marxists." What I mean is that Marx and Marxism pointed out that the "pure knowledge" narrative of universities is horseshit, and the universities serve an important functioning rationalizing the status quo.
The academics in the universities do not want to see themselves this way, and there has been open debate for about the last 50 years about the role of politics in the universities because of this.
Much of the behavior of college administration becomes more clear when you realize
1) they see themselves as outside of the political fray
2) they like quiet uneventful lives and they don't like dealing with problems
3) it is very important to them to prove that they are not part of the oppressor class and that their academic work is launched from a position of "resistance" rather than "status quo."
I worked for a State University for a number of years and I do tend to agree with this assessment in general. It's vexing to me since the administrators condoning this level of violence on their property is madness, but after reading a bit more about this particular university it sheds more light on how this could happen and be considered 'ok'.
Yeah - I feel the coverage of this issue generally has suffered from not pointing out that (to call a spade a spade) this isn't a "real" university.
I think that you are right about how they see themselves. And that was a fine thing in many ways before we decided that everyone (or a lot more people anyway) should attend a university.
^ Exactly this.
Universities should be something entirely separate from job training.
They're not holy institutions regardless of how they see themselves. Advanced technical degrees are always going to require an element of research at the institution and that isn't necessarily a good fit at a vocational school.
They weren't in medieval times, either.
But I agree that there's not a simple and obvious solution.
Re: Zeb,
I understand your confusion but you have to remember that these poor administrators have Marxian wives and Marxian kids to come home to, and how could these administrators look them in the eye if they knew they were derelict in their duty to further the Marxian agenda?
How do administrators benefit from this? I have a hard time believing that they want it to happen because it makes them look stupid and spineless.
Note the story doesn't NAME any administrators. They are suffering no harm from being made to look spineless.
If the college refuses to protect the rights of all students, all federal monies should be pulled post haste.
Are you incapable of going over to the schools webpage and viewing their faculty & administrators page? Maybe the students are camping out in it, and barricaded the router.
His point was that the news articles reporting on this aren't naming names, except the names of the students / faculty that are guilty of wrongthink such as Weinstein. Nolan "Chalkman" will be named publicly soon enough, and bullied off campus too.
The administration is not facing punishment for this. Their lives and families won't be threatened as long as they go along with the mob, and as long as they aren't published in the news. They certainly run no risk of losing their jobs. Whereas, those standing in the way of the angry mob are in serious jeopardy.
Easy decision: Oppose the Marxists, and risk your and your family's safety, risk your job, and risk having your name dragged through the news, or go with the flow, and stand on the "right side of history"
Hmm...that is interesting except for this:
College President George Bridges, who allowed himself to be bullied by the student protesters, has declined to take disciplinary action against any student involved and seems to have jumped on the bandwagon of the misguided faculty who think Weinstein is the problem.
So...not so sure about that.
Better that Trump temporarily nationalize the WA State National Guard. Them have a brutal crackdown on these commie punks.
Bizarro?
Never happen. Not even Trump. See "Kent State."
Nolan seems to be well enough known on campus as he's being followed around by bat-wielding weirdos.
I'm sorry, but all I can think of now is 'Warriors, come out and play-ay!'
BYODB: You'll note that many of the links do not mention Bridges by name, and in the few that do, it is only to note that the students marched to his office because of Weinstein. There is absolutely zero critical focus on Bridges, his policies or actions, and even in the rare cases of his response being breifly described, it is in a very approving tone, even noting how he has the approval of his faculty.
Instead, the focus is on how these kids are oppressed, they Dindu Nuffin, and are revolting against their oppressors. Oh, and how whitey has to be kicked off campus. Bridges faces no punishment or reprisal.
This really accentuates my point that a Uni President has the choice of opposing the Marxists, and having their name dragged through the press as an oppressive bigot, and risk losing their job and family's safety, or they can side with the Marxists and be spared... for now.
I see your point well enough, it's just that I don't really agree with it since the article we're talking about right now does in fact list his name. I suppose if you want to talk about media coverage in the aggregate you're probably right, but I consider aggregate media to be a waste of time generally speaking for the very reason you mention.
BYODB, would it be fair to consider Reason a popular, far-reaching publication? Yeah, they name him, and so does the campus newspaper, but both are basically tiny echo-chambers in reality. So you and I know, but we already knew, and we were both likely the kind of people who'd have sought out the information anyways by the nature of the media we are consuming.
So Reason labels Bridges as a crummy guy. That doesn't carry any weight with anybody. But if WaPo, WashTimes, NYT, etc all name a person and label him a monster, it means a lot more. It carries weight.
There are quite a few schools who market themselves at least in part as places with lots of opportunities for student activism so all the kids who wish it was the 60s can come and have their little tantrums without facing actual consequences.
Evergreen State has been this way for a while, but the rot just recently started infecting more established schools in the last 15 years or so. It took a while for the "whiteness" narrative developed in the late 90s to wend its way through academia, but now that grad students from that era have become assistant professors, while their Boomer shitlib instructors are running entire departments and universities, they're spreading this message to intellectually immature college students who take these narratives to their logical conclusion.
Just look at this shit from my alma mater, which created an entire school around this nonsense in order to train the next generation of grievance-mongers and shakedown artists.
Academia has become a cancer on society, and the only remaining solution is to nuke it entirely and start over.
"How do administrators benefit from this?"
They benefit by having the progressive bona fides validated. It's all happy and fuzzy, even if some eebil conservatives get their heads bashed in with bricks. But now that the progressives have turned on each other, it's race to bottom trying to placate the monster they created.
I have a hard time believing that they want it to happen because it makes them look stupid and spineless.
This is the impact to normal people. But the In-Group perceives this sacrifice as demonstrating their complete commitment to the cause which enhances their future standing and employment prospects.
Admins:Students::Cersei:Sparrows
Let's hope it ends the same way as it did with the Sparrows.
Most of the college administrators i've met are NOT people i'd like to see forced to walk around naked.
The admins are more Tommen I think.
Weinstein is of course correct, reasonable and coherent; so he is of course being ostracized and vilified.
Weinstein attempted to engage them
How quaint. Sounds like he learned that once you're accused, you can't talk your way out of it.
It sounds like these kids haven't gotten around to How to Kill A Mockingbird yet, which is bizarre because last I checked it's still on the high school curriculum in most places.
*rubs his temples*
They barricaded a library and took hostages... which they abused.
They barricaded a library building and took hostages... which they abused.
'Library' makes it sound like maybe they only took part of the building or simply occupied a public space. If you had done this at a law office or a bank, even without hostages, you would've been legally and rightfully shot dead. I know at one point, at least some Universities clustered administrative offices around vaults and other State and Federally controlled or monitored storage as a contingency for this situation.
The events at Evergreen should serve as a wake up call to moderate liberals
Well, the 2016 election was supposed to serve as a wake up call, plus a few hundred events since 2012, but apparently someone's not picking up.
It's hard to believe it can get any more ridiculous than this. But I'm sure there are idiots who will prove me wrong in the fall.
Peak Derp ain't just a river in Egypt.
Jesus fucking H. Christ! Weinstein used violent words that could have killed those poor students in a single blow! Don't you know that words are violence? Weinstein created the entire situation with his extreme intolerance! These students were simply expressing tolerance by not tolerating his intolerance! They are the victims! He should be fired and forced to pay them restitution! Demand justice for the students that Weinstein violently assaulted with is intolerant words! Justice!
So when communists urge what Mr Dooley described as poor, dissolute, uncovered wretches, such as elected the current Filipino dictator, to play hooky, that's cool and groovy. But if a communist urges a different persuasion and pigmentation of childish-minded collectivist apes to do likewise, then we have a clear and enforceable mandate for the initiation of force. Brilliant! It's like reading a review of a Charlton Heston movie.
You maniacs!
Gee Hank, aren't you going to tell us how this relates to what the GO prohibitionists did back in 1932?
Back when everyone had onions tied on their belts, which was the style at the time...
Literally life or death...
Yes literally. And no, you can't get off the ride or get a refund.
"Weinstein" is a killing word!
Watch some of those Evergreen college videos. Practically everybody there is so childish. They refuse to be adults.
It's infuriating that they are going to be the leaders of tomorrow, these privileged toddlers with overweening egos and a sense of accomplishment when they haven't even done anything worth praising.
Leading what? These people couldn't lead themselves out of a paper bag.
They lead me to give up on humanity.
Leading what?
Government bureaucracies. Most of them will never rise higher than "DMV lady" but unfortunately a few will end up having actual power and AUTHORITAH (which you will respect, or else).
I see some real senate potential in xem.
Nah, not coming from Evergreen U. The Yale snowflakes who were screeching at that administrator for not protecting them from the scourge of offensive Halloween costumes a couple of years ago, on the other hand...
Nah, those Yale turds will be pulling shots for life.
pulling shots
I take it this another clever euphemism?
It can be.
Hah, the fact that the protestors of the 60's are leading the world today apparently dawns on very few people.
And look where it got us.
Wikipedia:
Founded in 1967, Evergreen was formed to be an experimental and non-traditional college. Full-time students enroll in interdisciplinary academic programs instead of classes. . . . Faculty write narrative evaluations of students' work in place of issuing grades.
Evergreen offers a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Bachelor of Science, Master of Environmental Studies, Master of Public Administration, and Master in Teaching.
Rest assured, "leaders of tomorrow" they are not. The alum they are most proud of are Matt Groenig and Linda Barry. Which, nothing against Matt Groenig or Linda Barry, but I don't see either one of them being offered serious positions of authority anytime soon.
Evergreen is the Oberlin of the Northwest.
Thanks for posting this Square, the article makes more sense now.
They only ever list celebrity alums. A nobody alum second-in-command of a quango won't ever get mentioned because it serves no marketing purpose.
Watch some of those Evergreen college videos. Practically everybody there is so childish. They refuse to be adults.
It's the way they were raised.
Evergreen's police chief told Weinstein he should leave campus because it was no longer safe for him there.
Evergreen's police chief was then fired for not doing his job, right? RIGHT?!
What are you talking about? Police do not prevent crime, and they do not protect anyone except themselves and other police officers. Their job is to investigate crime. If they feel like it. That's it. Well, and to force peasants to obey under penalty of death. But protecting people? That's not their job.
No, protecting the white bigot would have got him fired. Try to keep up, pal.
Evergreen's police chief told Weinstein he should leave campus because it was no longer safe for him there.
Remember, arming yourself isn't necessary because police are there to protect you.
Evergreen's police chief was then fired for not doing his job, right? RIGHT?!
Damn straight. Shoulda locked Weinstein up 'for his own protection'. /sarc
"Even progressive professors can't escape the wrath of student activists."
Fucking idiots. They will be the first to go when they attempt another cultural revolution. They remind me of the communists in the gulags who couldn't believe they were there, it was all some sort of mistake! Everyone else in here is guilty but me, no I'm a good communist! If only Stalin knew about the gulags he would fix things!
they are dumber than dogshit. they are walking around with baseball bats trying to fit people with dunce caps. let's see who gets capped.
they are who I guessed they were:
Evergreen professor
Joker-chic.
The student at 4:55 guaranteeing their safety is one of the ones that was posing with baseball bats, and apparently patrolling armed around the campus.
GO IN or GO HOME!
GO IN or GO HOME!
GO IN or GO HOME!
GO IN or GO HOME!
She had her service dog.
This article is missing the virtue signaling that I have come to know and love.
"To be sure, Professor Deeply should have known what the response would be to his suggestion that whitey doesn't want to be bossed around."
Robby must be ideologically possessed since we can just generate speech content for him. Reason doesn't need to pay him anymore
https://youtu.be/JBCtX9lmsGQ?t=36s
Well, if I ever start my own business or am ever in a position to make hiring decisions, I won't be hiring any graduates of Evergreen University. While I realize they're not all "snowflakes," why take the risk?
Hire that guy who was doing the Limp Bizcut chalkings.
"Hi, I'm from the EEOC and I'm here to help! We've noticed that you haven't met your woke quota this year and would like to suggest one of the many fine candidates in this little red book."
*Hangs "Going Out of Business" sign on front of building*
I'd rather just close up shop. Of course, they probably wouldn't allow that either.
Instead I would hire a couple of guys named Paulie and Rocko to help the turd up repeatedly after repeatedly tripping and falling on his fellow up visit. After which the little puke would agree to close out the file on said business.
We need to make alma mater based discrimination illegal because of people like you.

From one of the linked articles:
Is it too much to ask that these imbeciles at least come up with a more original chant? I'm sick of the old "Hey-hey, ho-ho, [fill in the blank with whatever's got their panties in a wad this week] have got to go" formulation. It was tired and overused by the time the 60's ended for fuck's sake.
*facepalm* So am I to infer that Evergreen U is routinely raided by klansmen hunting for random blacks to lynch? FFS, what the hell is this simpleton on about? A white professor decided not to be bullied into leaving campus. How about a little perspective?
Red Square? Really? /sarc
"Is it too much to ask that these imbeciles at least come up with a more original chant? I'm sick of the old "Hey-hey, ho-ho, "
It's also appropriated from Dwarves.
An example of "punching down" if ever there was one.
HEH.
From the original article way back in 1987:
"They started dancing and they started doing this striptease and then somehow a rush started dancing with one of these women and started licking her breasts and wrapping his tongue around her outstretched tongue," Weinstein said. "1 thought it had the flavor of Roman empire entertainment." "1 wonder whether or not a system
which allows this to go on unquestioned by a large group of supposedly educated college students should be allowed to continue," Weinstein said.
No doubt that stripper was forced to be there and forced to stick our her tongue.
In other words, Weinstein was a progressive, nannying scold in college. He was a prototypical version of the SJWs attacking him today. It's poetic justice, watching them eat their own.
I knew one of these types back then; I can only imagine how insufferable he's become. I guarantee you he's teaching at some random school somewhere just like this guy - what else are you going to do with a women's studies degree.
You failed your country by not ending his progtarded life back then. Shame on you!
If you take Women's studies, you really understand women when you graduate. Things like why they're mad at you, and what you said.
No doubt that stripper was forced to be there and forced to stick our her tongue.
I'm sure it was part of a sexual harassment seminar that Weinstein was forced to attend.
Isn't that how it was way back in Rome? All the philosophical debates and back-and-forth between the Emporers and the Senate had nothing at all about to do with the official running of the State but what random plebes and loose associations of the Empire chose to do in their own huts. All the records of disgusting incest and polyamory, brutal gladiatorial combat and violent entertainment, it was all because of the run-of-the-mill Romans; the Empire and its leaders or policies had little to, if anything, do with it.
Yep.. Weinstein is just reaping what he's sown. Progressives never learn.
The events at Evergreen should serve as a wake up call to moderate liberals,
What are the chances both of them are available?
Both unicorns you mean. Moderate liberal/progressive is an oxymoron.
Once events such as that library takeover reach the point that hostages are being held -- and it did -- it seems to me that government has an absolute duty to surround the place with a SWAT team and go in shooting. If this does not happen then faculty, staff, and students need to start carrying loaded weapons immediately.
I have never believed in forced psychiatric treatment for anyone, but these Evergreen State punks might be a good place to start. My guess though is that a lot of them are already on heavy meds.
My guess though is that a lot of them are already on heavy meds.
I'm guessing a lot of them have been diagnosed with PTSD caused by having to wake up each morning.
There's a reasonably high chance that they are all availing themselves of the free psychiatric care offered at just about every college now.
Possible explanation for the recent campus lunacy-these are kids who were born in the mid-1990s, back when Prozac was prescribed for just about everything. Wonder how many of their moms took it while pregnant with them, resulting in permanent brain damage in their children?
The only treatment they need is cult deprogramming. Have you seen some of the videos of what goes on in those classrooms? There's no education, only extremely emotional outrage indoctrination; outrage over alternative facts. Most religions behave more reasonably than that.
Well to be fair, Evergreen State College is not your typical college. It is basically a college of, by, and for hippies. Just read the wikipedia article on it.
True. In 1988 I was visiting a friend at nearby St. Martins College. During my visit, he needed some reference materials for a paper he was writing. Some of which he had to get from Evergreen. So I tagged along. Holy shit that place was heavily fagified , with a massive preponderance of hippie trash.
You could stop all of the crap going on college campuses very easy. It is called expulsion. It a kid gets in a administrators face and starts threatening then expel them. If they demand that someone's speech be censored say ok and expel because their speech is probably offensive to someone. If the kids are not taught in school that their behavior is unacceptable then when they get out into the real world their antics will get them a good butt whipping or something much worse like screaming a cops face might get them dead.
Also privatize student loans.
If people had to spend their own money to go to college, they would want to be there to learn.
Plus, it would cause colleges to drop tuition by 50%+.
They aren't expelling them because the administrators on the same ideological side. Trump could put an end to the college bubble, though, by closing the taxpayer money spigot.
College President George Bridges, who allowed himself to be bullied by the student protesters, has declined to take disciplinary action against any student involved
I would have expelled them all.
The events at Evergreen should serve as a wake up call to moderate liberals, both students and faculty, who may have refrained from criticism of these campus crusaders when people like alt-right firebrands Milo Yiannopoulos or Gavin McInnes were the targets of their wrath.
I guess Progs no longer are aware of Niemoller, huh?
How many of these lunatics did Weinstein encourage over the years? I'm not seeking to punish him --- he is seeing the error of his ways --- but Lefties need to realize the end goal here.
As I've always said, the mob DID end up killing Robespierre.
Evergreen official asks student vigilantes to stop patrolling campus armed with bats, batons
Chairman Mao's Red Guards
Lol seeing that picture of those bat wielding vigilantes makes this whole thing seem far less severe and borderline whimsical.
Especially the one on the left who looks like Lamar Latrell from Reveng of the Nerds. None of those simpletons are the slightest bit intimidating, bats or no bats.
Yeah, luckily, there's nothing dangerous going on at Evergreen.
None of those simpletons are the slightest bit intimidating, bats or no bats.
The Simpletons were one of gangs too real to be in The Warriors.
Did everyone in that picture get beaten by the ugly bat?
I kinda want to call them out with a bucket of baseballs.
It almost seems like could just sandbox their whole SJW childishness. Set up a system where you try to oppress some of them with physics and math problems and they repeatedly thwart you by solving them. Those who can't solve the problems are afforded a chance to join Social Justice gangs where they cream the shit out of your white oppression gangs at various sporting physical endeavors. You could even have like a black league collection of gangs, white league collection of gangs, a women's league collection of gangs and host playoffs and mixed league gang events and stuff.
This kind of place is undoubtedly what Bernie Sanders had in mind when he called for the federal taxpayers to provide "free" university education. I'm sure he's very proud of these wankers.
Nah-True proggies hate Bernie Bros for not voting for her highness.
I thought those were the true party loyalists. I don't think Hillary is much of a progressive (or anything) except when she thinks it will help her political career.
White college towns are literally the only place Bernie got any votes. College students think the world revolves around them and that campus is the world. That's why they were so shocked that Bernie lost by 4 million votes. Er, I mean, they were all stolen by Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.
LITERALLY the only place Bernie got ANY votes. Man, all the Bern victims in this here Navy town are going to be shocked that some dipshit on the Internet has determined they don't exist.
Just a shot in the dark here, but by Navy town do you mean a town full of young white dudes?
It's not the 1940s anymore. Educate yourself, girl.
Uh, looks like a seriously above-average distribution of young white dudes to me.
Can't you just let Tony call absolutely everyone who disagrees with him even slightly a racist?
It's literally the only thing he's got left.
White college towns are literally the only place Bernie got any votes.
*clears throat*
Caucus = Young Socialists' coffee klatch.
Evergreen State University: Who has ever heard of this place? It's a little insignificant liberal-arts college in Olympia Washington. If this happened at a big state college or a private university anyone had ever heard of it would be news. Instead, it's just an outrage-generation article like the ones the lefty media outlets keep putting up every time a conservative student group prints something vaguely non-PC in the student paper. Either way, a waste of my eyeball time. I should know not to click on any article with "hysteria" in the title.
Thanks for stopping by and offering an overly verbose "meh" comment. We're all sure you have much more important things to occupy your time.
Ke$hsa is still gross.
or however the fuck you spell that creature's name
Either way, a waste of my eyeball time.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, you so-important thing.
Now you're just wasting even more eyeball time, dick.
Meh
I thought it was pretty well known as the punchline to jokes about hippy-dippy colleges that offer underwater basket weaving majors.
If this happened at a big state college or a private university anyone had ever heard of it would be news.
You mean like the University of Missouri a couple years ago? How are their enrollment numbers since then?
Or Yale, where the tards who threw that bitchfit about Halloween costumes were recently given citations for bravery at their graduation?
I'd have to think seeing Evergreen State or the like on resumes might start to be a red flag for potential employers.
To all y'all who are saying that Evergreen should be a red flag on a resume.... It's a liberal arts college for fuck's sake! Any degree from there is useless! By definition! And anyone who would hire someone from a liberal arts college would see shit like this as a resume builder, not a red flag! Fuck!
I think you may be being a bit unfair to liberal arts colleges as a class. There are plenty that offer actual degrees in subjects that have practical utility.
How is the entire student body not triggered by the presence of a clock tower on campus?
Easy, they cannot tell time.
"Telling" time is oppressive, just let time be.
I bet none of you libertarians did anything embarrassingly passionate in support of your political beliefs in college.
But keep up the good work focusing on the real threat to America--freshmen.
Occupying various administration buildings... smoking a lot of Thai stick...
...bowling...
smoking a lot of Thai stick...
These euphemisms.
I bought beer for underage students, thereby undermining a stupid and arbitrary law.
I took part in no extracurriculars and also commuted to school like a jackass; it never felt like I belonged.
That's a shame. Or not. I've been thinking recently about how life will probably never be better than it was in college. Not a problem if it wasn't that great to begin with.
Jesus, Tony. If you peaked in your early 20s, no wonder you're such a miserable shell of a person now.
I was in early-20s physical shape, had basically limitless money, went to parties all the time, had a lot of sex, and spent my days engaged in intellectual pursuits without a bill or responsibility in sight other than to crawl to class on time three days a week. I just don't see it ever being better, if I'm honest.
This explains so much about your awful worldview.
I have long suspected that you're a spoiled bourgeois socialist with no understanding of what normal people have to do to support themselves.
Thanks for confirming.
Actually I got a full scholarship by working really hard in high school. Then I was clever enough to apply for as many other scholarships and grants as I could, leaving me with a surplus each semester that supported a pretty good lifestyle. No handouts there, though I admit to relying on Mommy's credit card a bit during my semester in Europe.
And like any typical member of the spoiled bourgeois, you have no idea at all how privileged you actually are.
I paid my way through college by working graveyard as a security guard. My biggest challenge was struggling to stay awake in classes because I had very little time for sleep, let alone parties and "crawling to class three times a week" like I couldn't really be bothered with the whole thing.
And I still had time for left-wing political activism. The real kind, not the calling-people-names-on-the-internet kind.
I finally bit the bullet and visited Europe when I was about 30. It was financially painful, but I figured one should take a blow for something special every now and again.
My parents didn't have money for me to borrow.
The upside? My life is way better now than it was in college, and I look forward to the future.
I thought I made it clear that I didn't think peaking in college was a good thing. And all us lefties talk about anymore is privilege, so I'm pretty precisely aware of how much I have. Would you like to talk about the role skin color plays in privilege?
Life's not so bad now but I'm hardly the first to claim that a life of leisure and scholarly pursuit might be close to ideal. Better than punching a clock to make money for someone I've never even shaken hands with.
You sitting around with your lefty pals patting yourselves on the back for talking about how privileged you are doesn't matter to anyone but you. And no, you talking about it doesn't make you "precisely aware" of it.
Why - did you want a first hand perspective? I'll bet hard cash this is a subject you know of from books alone.
I pat myself on the back only for being open to learning about privilege dynamics and appreciating that by sheer chance of birth I have more than others (and less than some). Libertarian types and others who "don't see color" pat themselves on the back for ignoring the subject entirely.
My sister has a black girlfriend so I regularly get some first-hand perspective on both privilege and intersectionality! Of course not knowing, and not being possibly able to know fully, what it is like to be a different color or sexuality or gender in a given society is part of the whole point.
I know a black person!
If I guess this person comes from at least an upper middle class background and is college educated, will I be right?
Ah - argumentum ad mysterium - one of my favorites!
No, most of her siblings have been to or are in prison. That's not an uncommon type of situation for even upperclass black people.
No. More like a hat tip to the pragmatic appreciation of experience. Experience is necessary for understanding the world, thus if you can't experience something, you can't fully know it. You are arguing against the idea that one can know the world from an armchair, are you not?
You are arguing against the idea that one can know the world from an armchair, are you not?
Yes - I am arguing against your presumption to know that everyone who disagrees with you is racist, and with your declaration that skin color is the only element of privilege.
There's a difference between stating that you can't know the backgrounds and motivations of people you have never met and don't even really listen to when they respond to you and stating that you can't ever sympathize with the experiences of a fellow human whom you know well but who has a different skin color from you.
Then you're arguing against a straw man.
I feel like we're arguing in orbit of one another. I'm saying it's best to acknowledge one's ignorance but to try to know as much as one can in opposition to the claim that, from an armchair, some pasty-white utopian just knows that race is irrelevant and all is bootstraps.
I just gonna leave that there.
No handouts there, though I admit to relying on Mommy's credit card a bit during my semester in Europe.
Do you plan to pay her back once you move out of her basement?
Yes, being a power bottom, I'm sure you were quite the belle of the ball.
You say that like it's a bad thing.
You guys went to college?
I joined the Socialist Club. And I worked for an underground anarcho-communist newsletter for a time.
I never assaulted or threatened anyone, though.
I thought campus activism was goofy and pointless then, just like I do now.
Well, in college I was a Republican which I suppose is a tad embarrassing given that it was 2001.
I had a fairly prominent neocon as a prof that year. That was fun.
I bet none of you libertarians did anything embarrassingly passionate in support of your political beliefs in college.
Personally I was too busy studying and learning actual skills that would make me employable upon graduation. Stupid me, I thought that was the whole point of college. Apparently I was supposed to be an "activist" for some idiotic political cause.
Learning marketable skills to the exclusion of leisure and scholarly pursuit for its own sake is a terrible waste of tuition money.
You've got a degree in bologna
Left out of this article is when Weinstein refers to students' "phenotypes." Left in is his call for a discussion on the genetics of race, which is what got me wondering about this guy. Elsewhere he complains that anyone who doesn't buy "critical race theory" is ostracized.
I'm not saying he's racist, and I'm not saying he's wrong about the oppressive nature of racial discourse right now. But if he is a Charles Murray type, which is hinted at by his language, one can understand why passionate student activists might target him (again, these are teenagers and young adults--the greatest threat since ISIS!). Just some context.
calm down Tony. he agrees with you on everything.
I doubt they're smart enough to make that connection. It stems from his opposition to their demand for segregation. MLK-era liberals are the new racists for not sufficiently hating on whitey.
The "phenotype" and "critical race theory" business struck me as weird. Turns out he has all sorts of grievances about racial politics at his university. Might be a great professor in his field, but white dudes are best off not trying to change the entire conversation over to how they're the real victims. Mostly because it's just not going to accomplish anything but trouble for themselves.
Some overgrown, enraged children might decide to enact their "passionate activism" on you with baseball bats, and who could blame them?
You seem like you need a hug.
Doesn't everybody?
Well now that is weird.
What rational person could have grievances with the racial politics at modern universities?
I don't know anything at all about him, but based on the fact that he was hired by Evergreen College, I'm going to count this on the unlikely side.
He's a Bernie and Greenwald-supporting lefty. Other side of the same coin.
Oh - are you on the "Bernie is a racist" train, now?
I wouldn't say that, but he and his followers made a point of dismissing the interests of people of color in favor of their unified theory of socialism for dummies, as if it were a zero-sum situation, basically denying that the most loyal base of the Democratic party was relevant, and I'm hardly the only one who noticed.
Umm...one of the central constructs of socialism itself is that it's a zero sum game. Dare I say you're on the precipice of understanding?
I doubt it. Instead I suspect a word-salad misunderstanding on my part.
But I'm not a socialist. Nobody is anymore, really, except a few wackaloons like Bernie Sanders and Cornel West. See, over here on the left, many of us don't see subscribing to the most radical possible version of our beliefs as a virtue. The inverse situation is true on the right, where it's the David Brookses of the world who are on the outside watching in horror.
So - are you suggesting that Cornel West dismisses the interests of people of color in favor of his "unified theory of socialism for dummies?"
I'm going to leave it at wackaloon.
Of course you are, otherwise you would have to admit that what you just said was total nonsense.
Well you tell me what Cornel West believes because I sure as shit can't make heads or tails of it.
You just now said that he is a socialist: "But I'm not a socialist. Nobody is anymore, really, except a few wackaloons like Bernie Sanders and Cornel West"
So, would this be an example of your eagerness to pigeonhole the views of people even when by your own admission you can't make heads or tails of them?
Or to accidentally imply that a famous critical race theorist is a racist because he didn't support your candidate?
You mean by reiterating the point that Marxists and socialists have been making for generations that the bourgeois neutralizes class-based struggle by dividing the working class into identity groups and then pitching them against each other?
Is that what you mean?
I'm sure that's precisely what St. Bernie believes, but, again, most of us aren't Marxists.
Oh, I get that you're not a Marxist. You're what Marx called a "bourgeois socialist," which is a concept I'm just finding more and more useful lately:
The Socialistic bourgeois want all the advantages of modern social conditions without the struggles and dangers necessarily resulting therefrom. They desire the existing state of society, minus its revolutionary and disintegrating elements. They wish for a bourgeoisie without a proletariat. The bourgeoisie naturally conceives the world in which it is supreme to be the best; and bourgeois Socialism develops this comfortable conception into various more or less complete systems. In requiring the proletariat to carry out such a system, and thereby to march straightway into the social New Jerusalem, it but requires in reality, that the proletariat should remain within the bounds of existing society, but should cast away all its hateful ideas concerning the bourgeoisie.
The proletariat needs to cast away hateful ideas about the bourgeoisie - ideas like that the bourgeoisie doesn't understand it's privilege, or that the bourgeoisie doesn't care about racial minorities.
The bourgeoisie is here to help! The proletariat is racist for having these evil thoughts about the bourgeoisie!
Saying Marx got it wrong means not using his terms and ideas to frame the world. By continuing to attempt to label me with Marxian concepts, that makes you the Marxist, not me.
And I doubt Marx is going to give you credit for being a full-on shameless capitalist.
No, it doesn't. Now you're talking like a paleoconservative.
I never claimed not to be a Marxist. In fact, you might have noticed further up where I mentioned having worked for an underground anarcho-communist press back in the day.
I'm not a big fan of capitalism, honestly. I'm very much in favor of free markets. That Marx was wrong about the labor theory of value doesn't mean he wasn't right about other things.
My favorite Marx quote, from Kapital:
The sphere of circulation or commodity exchange, within whose boundaries the sale and purchase
of labour-power goes on, is in face a very Eden of the innate rights of man. It is the exclusive realm
of Freedom, Equality, Property and Bentham. Freedom, because both buyer and seller of a
commodity, let us say of labour-power, are determined only by their own free will. They contract as
free persons, who are equal before the law. Their contract is the final result in which their joint will
finds a common legal expression. Equality, because each enters into relation with the other, as with
a simple owner of commodities, and they exchange equivalent for equivalent. Property, because
each disposes only of what is his own. And Bentham, because ieach looks only to his own advantage.
The only forces bringing them together, and putting them into relation with each other, is the
selfishness, and the gain and the private interest of each. Each pays heed to himself only , and no
one worries about the others. And precisely for that reason, either in accordance with the preestablished
harmony of things, or under the auspices of an omniscient providence, they all work
together to their mutual advantage, for the common weal, and in the common interest.
I want to place very special emphasis on this part:
The only forces bringing them together, and putting them into relation with each other, is the
selfishness, and the gain and the private interest of each. Each pays heed to himself only , and no one worries about the others. And precisely for that reason, either in accordance with the preestablished harmony of things, or under the auspices of an omniscient providence, they all work together to their mutual advantage, for the common weal, and in the common interest.
And in opposition to Marx I a believe strong state is necessary for the best possible society, and not just as a means to an anarchic end, and that a strong state can be perfectly compatible with free individual choice. You would celebrate the positive outcomes of collective action but then hobble the most efficient (and, ideally, equitable) means of acting collectively. But maybe that's because I'm skeptical of "omniscient providence," which is necessary in one form or another (free market gods are popular around here) to believe that people acting with self-interest but no organization will result in the best world for each individual.
Actually, that's where you agree with Marx, and where I disagree with both of you.
I thought you were the educated one?
You have no idea what I think. None. Which is striking in that you and I have been interacting with some regularity for like 8 years now, and I know quite a lot about you. Because heartless libertarians like me actually value other individuals and pay attention to them, even when they disagree with us.
Not like tolerant liberals such as yourself, who thoughtfully dismisses those with differing views as racist cousin-fuckers.
You understand that the passage I quoted was written by an atheist, right? Not just a little-a "atheist," but someone who was famously and aggressively atheist.
Here's what you consistently refuse to understand.
You say in this same paragraph that you are skeptical of "omniscient providence" and you imply that you don't believe that there is an organizing principle in nature other than government.
How do you suppose organized biological systems developed without the guiding hand of government?
Oh snap, and it's Square = Circle with the left hook!

" Evergreen's police chief told Weinstein he should leave campus because it was no longer safe for him there."
When I was at the protests in the sixties, the cops told the administrators watching "You should stand back, sir, the blood splatters pretty far from these batons"..
The "Day of Absence" is traditionally a day where students and faculty of color leave campus to highlight their important roles at the school.
So, an overall improvement to campus life?
, a student group asked that their white peers and instructors take a "Day of Absence" from campus life to "explore issues of race, equity, allyship, inclusion and privilege.
Because increasing minority to white ratios totally lowers "oppression".
College President George Bridges, who allowed himself to be bullied by the student protesters, has declined to take disciplinary action against any student involved and seems to have jumped on the bandwagon of the misguided faculty who think Weinstein is the problem.
Telling these people that they won't be held responsible for their actions will definitely de-escalate things. Guaranteed.
Just for some context here... regarding Evergreen State "college"... This is from their course catalog.
"Dancing Molecules, Dancing Bodies" uses dance to communicate with the body to understand the chemical processes within.
Calling it a college is like calling a wheelbarrow an automobile
WA leg should defund, and deinstitutionalize Evergreen.
Bulldoze it and turn it into a Spotted Owl Sanctuary.
