British Police have identified two of the alleged London Bridge attackers—Khuram Shazad Butt and Rachid Redouane

  • The White House is formally backing a plan to privatize air traffic control. Read the Reason Foundation's Bob Poole on why privatization is a good idea here.
  • A fired employee shot and killed five people at his former workplace in Orlando today before turning the gun on himself.
  • President Donald Trump complained on Twitter about the "watered down travel ban" on visitors from certain countries, putting him at odds with his own Department of Justice.
  • Harvard has revoked admission offers to a handful of potential incoming students for posting memes they considered offensive in a Facebook chat group.
  • The Supreme Court will be considering an important case on police cellphone tracking, they announced today. The Court also ruled 8-0 (Neil Gorsuch didn't participate) that the federal authority to seize money and property is limited to what they can prove the defendant acquired as a result of the crimes they've been charged with.
  • National Security Agency documents leaked to The Intercept claim that Russian military intelligence folks were attempting cyberattacks on American voting software suppliers and trying to get election officials to download malware. (UPDATE: It looks like the FBI has arrested what is likely the leaker.)

Alex Honnold casually climbed a rock higher than the world's tallest building. With no safety gear.

Alex Honnold, a 31-year-old universally acclaimed climbing genius, scaled El Capitan without a rope, aid, or any help whatsoever. That is yes, almost 3,000 feet of climbing and focus applied to the almost sheer, vertical surface most consider to be the heart of the rock climbing universe, done without so much as a BASE jumping chute for a sliver of the illusion of safety.

    Dude.

    1. Conchfritters   8 years ago

Alex Honnold is a freak. Already free climbed Half Dome, this guy is insane.

    2. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

I met him. He is totally down to earth. Wait, let me rephrase that. Nice guy.

    3. B.P.   8 years ago

"There are climbers sleeping on the rock as we write this, very fit, very experienced climbers who will need the better part of a week to knock off. They will sleep there, haul gear from station to station, and even defecate into PVC pipes and carry it with them for disposal later in order to finish the climb."

If I'm clinging to the side of a rock, 2,000 feet in the air, I'm just going to let my poop fly like a bird. Also, do the writers at SB Nation translate their pieces from English into another language and then back to English?

      1. Cynical Asshole   8 years ago

...do the writers at SB Nation translate their pieces from English into another language and then back to English?

I don't think they have writers. All their stuff is written by spam-bots. When they're not posting non-sense here about their mom's being web-cam whores and buying "new" Citroen 2CVs that is.

    4. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   8 years ago

I learned a new word today. "Glissading"

Involves a lot of dying and not being able to get to your body for weeks after.

      1. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

I've glissaded before, though not intentionally. You end up with a lot of snow and ice in your ass crack, if you glissade head first like I did.

    The 'Lifestylization' of Politics

With the decline of traditional religion and other mediating institutions, the primary source of identity for ever larger numbers of people is partisan affiliation. Indeed, partisan affiliation ? for the first time ever ? is often more predictive of behavior and attitudes than race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. That's bananas.

    And cream!

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

Let's all build our identity around which coven of preening psychopaths we'd prefer to see making the rules for everybody else. What could go wrong?

Fringe Groups Revel as Protests Turn Violent

As the founder of a group of right-wing vigilantes called the Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights, Mr. Chapman, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound commercial diver, is part of a growing movement that experts on political extremism say has injected a new element of violence into street demonstrations across the country.

Part fight club, part Western-pride fraternity, the Alt-Knights and similar groups recruit battalions of mainly young white men for one-off confrontations with their ideological enemies ? the black-clad left-wing militants who disrupted President Trump's inauguration and have protested against the appearances of conservative speakers on college campuses.

    Good grief.

    1. BearOdinson   8 years ago

I know nothing about these guys, and they very well could be dipshits. But I love how the media spins it:
The Alt-Knights are injecting violence in street demonstrations. Meanwhile, the masked lefties who destroy property, hurt people, threaten violence are "militants" who "disrupt" and "protest".

      It is just like:

A cease fire was broken today when Israel retaliated against a Hamas rocket barrage.

      1. colorblindkid   8 years ago

I don't care what your affiliation is or what's being said. If a group fills out permits and holds a legal rally in a public space, and another group without permissions shows up dressed in all black with their faces covered to confront them, there is no fucking "both sides are bad" argument. The aggressors are 100% the black-clad assholes who show up specifically to confront the permitted demonstrators.

        1. TW   8 years ago

          This.

    2. SIV   8 years ago

The girl was waving an anti-fascist placard last week at a protest against Shariah law in Midtown Manhattan when a scuffle broke out and she knocked an older woman to the ground.

"Assaulting our people?" Mr. Chapman shouted as he reached across the barricades and ripped her sign apart. "Your days are numbered, Commie!" he called after her as the police escorted her away. "The American people are rising up against you!"

    3. Chipper Morning, Now #1   8 years ago

Fringe group? Did someone say "Anna Torv"?

      1. Crusty Juggler - lamertarian   8 years ago

        No, pervert.

    4. BearOdinson   8 years ago

"There's been a lot of organized violence on the part of the left against the right, so we have to organize," Mr. Chapman said. "The purpose is to have a peaceful event. But if people are attacked, you have to be ready and willing to defend yourself and your right-wing brothers and sisters."

This form of aggression is something researchers say they have not seen on such a scale before on the far right, where the chosen method of provocation for groups like neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan is to demand the use of public space for rallies where they can spew racist and offensive language that is nonetheless protected as free speech.

And then of course, the requisite quote from the Southern Poverty Law Center about these far-right groups.

So defending yourself is aggression, while "militants disrupting" events is free speech. Not surprising from the NYT.

...and trying to get election officials to download malware.

What kind of dipshits would have their tabulation system internet connected?

    1. BearOdinson   8 years ago

Actually it is kind of funny. Trying to hack voting software suppliers. Once the software is provided to the county, state, etc. isn't it V&V'd?

And trying to get election officials to download malware. Hackers try to get EVERYONE to download malware.

This is pretty fucking weak sauce.

      1. Cynical Asshole   8 years ago

Once the software is provided to the county, state, etc. isn't it V&V'd?

Maybe if they actually follow industry standard best practices. What do you think the odds of that are?

that the federal authority to seize money and property is limited to what they can prove the defendant acquired as a result of the crimes they've been charged with.

Scott may not have meant to, but that statement seems to imply the ruling went farther than it actually did. I first read this statement as thinking some grand principle against forfeiture was ruled. No, it merely overturns the principle of joint liability. If a guy running a drug business makes a bunch of money, and pays a minion a salary, the minion can't be held jointly liable for the full amount of money the owner made illegally. Only the amount that the minion was paid, from the illegal actions.

But this doesn't have any bearing on civil forfeiture in general.

    1. Jerryskids   8 years ago

Well, that whole "what they can prove" begs the question of whether they can prove it beyond a reasonable doubt or whether they merely need the preponderance of the evidence. The problem was never that the cops couldn't prove the assets were ill-gotten gains, it's that the proof frequently consisted of "because I said so".

      1. BearOdinson   8 years ago

I am not disagreeing with you at all! But in this case, the statute that SCOTUS was working from only applies to those

Rockaway Twp. cop in court on charges of having sex with teenage girls

he Morris County Prosecutor's Office on Monday extended a plea offer of seven years in state prison and Megan's Law registration to now-suspended Rockaway Township Police Officer Wilfredo Guzman, who is charged with having sex, off-duty, with two female teenagers in exchange for alcohol and prescription drugs.

Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Laura Magnone said the state's plea offer is seven years in prison and registration with police as a convicted sex offender under Megan's Law in exchange for guilty pleas to one count each of endangering the welfare of a child and sexual assault.

    1. BearOdinson   8 years ago

You know, if Trump were serious about getting to the bottom of these leaks he'd appoint somebody to look into it, somebody with a history of going after leakers hard, somebody intimately familiar with the way Washington works, somebody who's recently retired and with a lot of spare time on his hands.

WTF@ Harvard for rescinding admission offers to kids for sharing hateful memes. Their lives have been turned upside down and they'll targeted by the leftist mob.

They kids, you morons. Barely into their 20s. I was in college not long after 9/11 and my Asian roommates used to joke "oh shit we better get out of the gas station before that lady in scarf blows it up".

Harvard better hope there's no BLM sympathizer in the student body who expressed support for killing cops, because if they haven't been kicked out they have no moral ground to stand. It's no stupid insane how these retarded demagogues are allowed to run these big colleges.

    1. Cynical Asshole   8 years ago

...my Asian roommates used to joke "oh shit we better get out of the gas station before that lady in scarf blows it up".

Is it wrong that I read that quote in the voice of the City Wok guy from South Park? So LACIST.

    2. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

      1. Did they publicize the names of the students?

      2. Allegedly, the memes were a bit more hardcore than that.

Arguably, the idiocy of these kids was reason enough to revoke admission.

      1. XM   8 years ago

How can you lose your job and college admission for just sharing hateful memes? There are shock sites that show gory accident scenes and blown up bodies. People have morbid fascination and the dark spots of the internet indulge them. They might share vids and pics from these places.

Can I get canned from work because I showed my mom a Polaroid picture of a black man being lynched? What if I did that In 1996, before Facebook? Unless these kids were actually advocating for violence Harvard has no reason to do that to these kids. This case should go all the way to the SC, if they want to sue.

I'm no FB enthusiast, but isn't sharing pics there is just posting stuff on their walls? I used FB private chat in the past and I didn't know you could actually post pics there, or that someone else could see it.

        1. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

Who lost a job? Regardless, are you coming here to say an employer/college must provide a sufficient reason to revoke employment/admission? Furtherly regardless, from the article:

The official Facebook group for the Class of 2021 did give a warning to students saying the page was managed by the school's College Admissions & Financial Aid Office and was meant to "meet your classmates, share where you're coming from, ask questions, keep in touch."

"We are not responsible for any unofficial groups, chats, or the content within. As a reminder, Harvard College reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission under various conditions including if an admitted student engages in behavior that brings into question his or her honesty, maturity, or moral character," the description on the Facebook page reads.

          1. Bubba Jones   8 years ago

Lol. They did this on the Harvard Facebook group? Morons.

          2. Tejicano   8 years ago

This makes me wonder if their collective error was more due to carelessness or to a strong sense of entitlement?
