How Trump Is Emboldening a Reign of Anti-Muslim Terror in India
America is losing its soft power to spread liberal values
Last week saw what is arguably the most terrifying development in India's six-decade-long history as an independent republic: Prime Minister Narendra Modi installed as chief minister

(governor) of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state that houses the Taj Mahal (the world's finest Muslim monument), Yogi Adityanath, a rabid Hindu nationalist who makes no bones about his ethnic cleansing agenda against Muslims. During the campaign for state elections, Adityanath repeatedly invoked Trump's Muslim ban to justify his plans.
Of course what Trump is proposing is nowhere close to what this man has in mind. Still, what this clearly shows is that America is losing its soft power to spread pluralism, tolerance, and other liberal values. Instead of remaining a beacon for protecting vulnerable minorities, Trump's America seems to be turning into a giant green light for minorities' persecution around the world, I note in my column at The Week.
This is not merely because Trump has neither the interest nor the moral clout to call them (illiberal leaders) out and deny them international respectability, something that Modi and his ilk desperately crave. It is because the rest of the world sets its moral compass by looking at America. Most Americans don't fully appreciate this, but the moral progress that this country has made by invoking its own principles — liberty, justice, equality, tolerance, religious pluralism — to fight slavery, Jim Crow, and segregation has been the main driver of liberalism around the world over the last several decades. America has offered persecuted groups a moral vocabulary and a modus operandi for securing their rights and holding their regimes accountable.

How Trump Is Emoldening a Reign of Anti-Muslim Terror in India
Let's just consider this thread a place of silent reflection.
But first let me pop some popcorn.
...
Two Shikha articles in one day? Goddamnit, the comment posting just got semi-fixed.
It's like listening to an evangelical convinced that the world is populated by invisible demons responsible for all the world's suffering.
For some reason this bring to mind a former evangelical explaining that the faithful she knew attributed every misfortune to the work of demons abusing God's children.
More Demons, this time tormenting the Righteous posting at Reason.
Are they ever going to get the comments software fixed?
Real libertarians think people should be responsible for their own actions, and not blame somebody else.
Nope. It's Trump's fault. And Milo's.
I don't blame El Se?or Presidente Bananero Trumpo for what the Indian Prime Minister did. I blame El Trumpo for his economically incompetent policies, his total lack of awareness and his folly, which is shared by pretty much all of his Trumpista supporters.
Please, I just heard the guy talk about saving everyone from eeeeeeeevil drug cartels and "cheap narcotics that are given away as if candy" (no, I'm not kidding), so there's plenty to blame him for.
You mean his failed economic policies in 3 months?
Please, tell me about Obama get policies? How's our roads and infrastructure? Let's spend a trillion on cronyism!
Trump may suck - no doubt, but geez at least give it a year.
More or less this. You don't have to go half way around the globe to find something to blame him for.
Thereby confirming that Indian leaders have no more understanding of the "Muslim ban" than American magazine writers.
So the guy is lazy and only uses current news? Historians estimate Hindu casualties from the Muslim invasion and occupation of India at between 80 and 400 million. That sounds a lot more inflammatory than a politician on the other side of the world.
And encouraging people to hold grudges about distant historical events is always a good idea.
1. It isn't all that distant - it was an ongoing fight by the Hindus to free themselves from Muslim oppression that the British broke up when they colonized India in the 18th and 19th century.
2. My point was that it is probably more relevant to India than a minor political fight a world away.
What nonsense.
Honest condemnation of anti-Muslim violence must also condemn pluralism. What's point except baiting n inciting in Modi's India?
Trump is directly responsible for none of this, of course. But it is incontrovertible that illiberal leaders around the world are emboldened by his example.
So not wanting unlimited Muslim immigration = supporting a genocide progrom. Got it.
Your conclusion is contradicted by the passage you quote.
Is Dalmia derangement syndrome becoming a thing? She says plenty of dumb crap without you putting words in her mouth.
Trump doesn't even belong in the same room with what is going on in India. The fact that she brought him up in this article is intended to make one consider the opposite of her words. "He's not responsible, but...."
Oh, and there's also the freakin' headline.
Trump's America seems to be turning into a giant green light for minorities' persecution around the world
Uh, how was America a red light before?
No, before it was just an ordinary green light. Now it's hyuge.
Test
Seriously, Reason? I can't believe you're subjecting your readers to this crap.
So, you're insane
It is because the rest of the world sets its moral compass by looking at America.
If true, that is sad.
If that were the case, America wouldn't be the only place on earth with an explicit freedom of speech.
Shitkha doesn't approve of 'free speech'
You angling to be the new Mikey?
Can you believe this dude says he's never heard of Fozzie Bear?
No. I think he is a furry infiltrator. WakaWaka, will you swear, right here, right now, before the devil, that you are square and on the level?
Shitkha
hahahaha
Well they are influenced enough to want to claim they have it. Sort of like countries that call themselves a republic.
Is there anything Trump can't be blamed for?
And keep in mind, he's undoing some of Obama's anti-global warming regulations.
Well, see, there ya go. Everybody else will follow suit, and the entire globe will soon be a burnt out cinder. So we can stop worrying so much and just twiddle our thumbs until then.
Yeah, but when it's burned to a cinder it will all be Trump's fault.
^ Republican apologist. Sad!
Fuck off, DanO.
Yet another Shikha article claiming someone she hates is responsible for something he doesn't support happening in another country.
MAKE INDIA HINDU AGAIN
Now some of you may feel that the cormorant does not play an important part in the life of the school, but I would remind you that it was presented to us by the corporation of the Town of Sudbury to commemorate Empire Day, when we try to remember the names of all those from the Sudbury area who so gallantly gave their lives to keep China British.
But I would like to visit the Taj Mahal some day.
Jesus fucking Allah, Shikha....
^ SDS
Not really. Just amused by her constant hyperbole.
And accusations of derangement coming from you is pretty rich.

This sentence isn't long or convoluted enough.
I remind people that within that six decade long history there were massacres, several major wars, and martial law that included the chemical and physical castration of untouchables, and this is the most terrifying development in their history.
What is so strange is that Reason has not printed a Judge Napolitano article in a while after his frivolous comments and yet Shikha (who is undoubtedly insane) gets two articles
He's back on Fox News, by the way. He appeared with Bill Hemmer this morning.
That probably has a lot to do with the fact that Shika works for the Reason foundation and Napolitano doesn't work for Reason.
Trump is responsible for the bad choices Indian politicians make?
Wow, who knew he was so powerful?
Why, if Trump can control the bad choices Indian politicians make, doesn't that make him more powerful than Shiva?
Where can one go to petition the Reason weblords to allow longer names? There isn't enough room to put Elitist Wannabe Leftist Poser Nativist Collectivist at the end of my name. I'd really love for people to know what they're getting before reading my posts.
They get it after reading your posts.
Jaya Sri Trumpatam! Trumpatum swayam aha! So, is Trump a manifestation of Kalki coming down from Trumpa Loka on a white horse to vanquish the mohammedan mlechchas?
I, for one, think Shikha makes a fine point. As we all know, Muslims haven't done anything to warrant all the racist hate they receive. When Trump leverages his global reputation for good manners and carefully considered statements, people start to associate this type of racism with the top-tier professionalism of American government, to which they all aspire. And that's no good.
" It is because the rest of the world sets its moral compass by looking at America. "
When they aren't calling us fat, lazy, degenerates.
Ugly, stupid, fat, lazy, degenerate, gun-toting, cowboy hicks.
Remember, back on 1/19/17, when there was NEVER an issue between Hindus and Muslims?
Trump is powerful!
Not so many years ago the US had the courage to stand up for the oppressed Muslim Brotherhood. Oh how low we've fallen.
"Libertarians" hardest hit.
Trump has wizard-level magical powers.
Even shit in other countries is now Trumps fault its like no one ever thought of protecting their citizens before from a group that claims to want to convert or kill.
I swear I remembered Indua ans Pakistan nearly going to war since becoming nuclear powers. That would seem to qualifying as a supremely terrifying moment.
There's a huge difference between a nation exercising its powers to control its own borders and determine who is and who is not allowed in (particularly when it does so for a limited time) versus one that orders or endorses the murdering of ethnic or religious minorities among its citizenry. Conflating the two as Shikha Dalmia has done is morally and intellectually retarded and if she is willing to stoop to that in the hopes of scoring a few cheap political points against President Trump, it makes me wonder how accurate and truthful she's being in her reporting of what seem to be horrific crimes in India.
A lot of journalists threw away what credibility they once had because it was just "too important" to oppose Trump and as a result of taking shortcuts and cutting corners in their opinion journalism, even fewer people trust them as a source of information on other matters. In other words, the net effect of articles like this is not that it will cause more people to turn against President Trump (he's fully capable of doing that on his own) but rather that it will encourage greater skepticism of when we hear reports of alleged atrocities committed against Muslims overseas.
You say that like it's a big surprise.
Shikha, when the walls fell!
Reason's response to speculation that they don't care about the loss of comments: two Shikha articles in one day
I came here for the shit show.
How do you still have a job here?
