I live in Sammamish, WA so I find this quite amusing.

But being as I am a alcoholic, I'm extremely offended. I have no idea why, but whateves, I'm hammered right now.

How many brew pubs does one city need?

Sounds like Tacoma needs to set up a Certificate of Need committee.

Any reason the comments aren't showing up on Firefox on the PC? I'm getting redirected to the first slide, bypassing the comments.

        Its working for me.

You probably have an ad blocker in place. When using Firefox on this site I have to disable my ad blocker to read posts or to post. Look under "tools > add-ons" or "Menu > add-ons" (in the upper right) for java blockers or add blockers.

        1. SchillMcGuffin   8 years ago

I have Firefox with a script blocker, and have no problems. Though I long ago authorized the particular scripts the site itself seems to need to operate.

"It only takes 20 years for a liberal to become a conservative without changing a single idea." - Robert Anton Wilson

    1. C. S. P. Schofield   8 years ago

There's some truth to that, but if you read Wilson's writing, you have to admit that he's receiving Radio Venus on his bridgework.

      1. Robert   8 years ago

Uh-oh: orphan reply. Somebody upthread write something out of bounds? Wish I knew which Wilson (such a common name) that's about. Robert Anton? Peter Lamborn? Edmund O.?

      2. cthulhu   8 years ago

RAW was mostly an empiricist; it was just that he was willing to tackle a lot of weird shit while still being empirical about it and not being afraid to say that it worked for him (without dismissing the possibility of the placebo effect). E.g., his support of the ideas of Wilheim Reich, which was also about his outrage over the way that Reich was treated by the government (having his papers burned is a good example). But Wilson's main allegiance was to Operation Mindfuck, as described in the counterculture masterpiece "Illuminatus!"

FYI, your use of the present tense ("he's receiving") makes me wonder if you're aware that RAW shuffled off this mortal coil in 2007, largely as a result of post-polio syndrome. He had been one of recipients of the unorthodox Sister Kenny treatment for polio as a child and largely had no long term polio symptoms until post-polio syndrome much later in life. Wilson implied that his experience with the Sister Kenny treatment laid the groundwork for his heterodox empiricism later in life.

I think it's the other way around. 20 years ago only communists were socialists. Now everyone to the left of Ted Cruse is.

      1. ThomasD   8 years ago

" 20 years ago only communists were socialists."

You mean way back in the dark ages of 1997? Yeah sure,

The only way anyone could say that with a straight face is either dishonesty or not being out of diapers 20 years ago.

        1. Snort   8 years ago

Although Nixon went to China in 1972 there was little shift in public opinion of China in that time frame, as the cold war with Russia was still on. This lasted through the Regan years. Remember Reagan's"Tear down this wall" speech. American attitudes regarding communism began to change a couple of years after Ronald Regan left office. This would place the beginning of the change in the early 1990's as American's appetite for cheap Chinese goods began to build. For a perspective check out the rise of Walmart (cheap Chinese imports), the collapse of the Soviet Union (less communist visibility) and the fall of Rubbermaid (Walmart shutting out Rubbermaid in favor of cheaper Chinese products resulting in Rubbermaid's collapse). I probably should use 25 years in my reference above but the previous author used 20 years and that's close enough.

  4. Trigger Warning   8 years ago

Ah, the aroma. I know it well.

Seattle is trying to become northern San Francisco. Maybe they'll succeed. They probably will. They've already priced normal people out of living there, so they have a thriving community of limousine liberals, trust-fund babies, and actual communists. It's pretty depressing.

    1. Crusty Juggler - #2   8 years ago

Seattle has commies, while Coeur d'Alene is full of retired L.A.P.D.

      What's left?!?!?!?!?!?

      1. Chip Your Pets   8 years ago

        We still have Spokane.

Missoula is becoming Eastern Portland. There is nothing left. We are all urban hipster proggy douchebags, now.

      3. Trigger Warning   8 years ago

Crusty: the dark, cool green of the Puget Sound islands. It makes up for San Franattle. Mostly.

    2. Snort   8 years ago

Communists? Where? I need a cheap imported Chinese teapot for the cheap imported Chinese tea which is stirred with a cheap imported Chinese spoon in a cheap imported Chinese cup sitting on my cheap imported Chinese table which is sitting on my cheap imported Chinese floor while I listen to a cheap imported Chinese TV through my cheap imported Chinese speakers while reading this website on my cheap Chinese imported computer.

Hillary Clinton urges Democrats to keep fighting.

The challenges we face as a party and a country are real. So, now more than ever, we need to stay engaged in the field and online, reaching out to new voters, young people and everyone who wants a better, stronger and fairer America.

We as Democrats must move forward with courage, confidence and activism, and stay focused on the elections we must win this year and next.

Let resistance plus persistence equal progress for our party and our country. Keep fighting and keep the faith, and I'll be right there with you every step of the way.

    Ready for Hillary 2020?

    1. #NotMyReason (Krabappel)   8 years ago

Well she got her surrogate, Tom Perez to head the DNC so they can rig the primary for her again.

      1. Chip Your Pets   8 years ago

At some point you'd think the Dems would recognize that they're stunting the development of their next generation of leaders by propping up the dinosaurs like Hillary, Pelosi, Feinstein, and Schumer.

        1. C. S. P. Schofield   8 years ago

This is pretty much what I've been saying. Everybody seems to interpret the election in terms of a Republican victory. They gloss over the degree to which the Republican establishment is uneasy with Trump.

It seems to me that BOTH PARTIES experienced grassroots rebellions in 2016. The Democrat establishment quashed theirs, nominated the establishment's preferred figurehead, and lost the support of enough of the rank and file that they lost the general election. The Republican establishment (for whatever reason) failed to quash the Trump movement, kept the enthusiasm of their rank and file (for the most part) and won the general election.

This is important because the Democrat establishment seems determined to distract the rank and file from the inner party shenanigans by whipping up Hate Trump feelings, and to re-nominate Hillary. But in 2020 Hillary is going to be (if anything ) even MORE revolting than she is now, and if Trump manages to get the economy going (and if he slashes regulation, that pretty assured in the short run). So in 2020 Trump is likely to beat Hillary like a red headed stepchild.

        2. Scottzilla   8 years ago

They hate the GOP for being the party of old white men. They are the party of old white women.

          1. C. S. P. Schofield   8 years ago

They are the party of criminal malfeasance.

  9. Eric L   8 years ago

"Wait ? is that the same guy?" (referring to the man in the wheelchair) reminds me of a tactic that the Left uses that really annoys me at these public meetings. That is calling your group a 'coalition'. I lived briefly in Chico, CA and at any giving city council someone would stand up and say they were from a group with a title like "Chico Regional Area Progressives", a coalition of local peace, environmental, homeless, LGBTQ, labor, advocates for the handicapped, etc. groups. What I soon found out was that all these groups were just the same eight or so cranky people. On the second Saturday of the month they would meet as the peace group, on first Fridays as the local environmental group, etc. They were not really a coalition but just a small cadre pushing your standard laundry list of progressive issues - old whine in new and different bottles. But hey, 'coalition' just sounds like there is so many more to them. But it works so they will continue to use this tactic.

    1. Threedoor   8 years ago

We have several groups like that here in northern Idaho, Friends of : the Clearwater, Moscow Mountain, Risenhower Hill, Giant Palouse Earthworm or some such bs. The same retired professors and lawyers.

  10. jdgalt   8 years ago

What this comic really illustrates, more than anything, is how much better off we'd be if the law stopped restricting building AND stopped restricting discrimination, so every group could segregate themselves from who ails them.

  11. Ted S.   8 years ago

I could swear I commented on this article from my smartphone earlier, and that comment isn't showing up. H&R is fucking up this story by redirecting me to Slide 1 instead of the comments (Firefox on Linux). The comments finally showed up, but look wonky. The normal comment header at the very top of the comment thread isn't there.

Nice portrayal of Sawant, bagge. Except you forgot the tinfoil hat.

  13. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   8 years ago

I'm trying to find this funny, but I just find it depressing. Bagge hasn't used the standard tools of comic exaggeration. He's simply drawn a comic of EXACTLY what is like.

  14. Warren   8 years ago

Look at it this way Bagge, if you move to Tacoma, you can call yourself a Taco-man.

  15. dirtydeen   8 years ago

This seems pretty well researched considering the fact that it was a methanol plant being proposed in Tacoma, not a methane plant. But sure, it is Tacoma's businesses that will pay the price after losing the opportunity to feed lunch to 200 transplanted "blue collar" engineers. What a joke. Tacoma lost the opportunity to gift 20% of their water table to China (in the same year residents were asked by the City to restrict water usage during a drought) in exchange for letting them build a plant that produces and stores 100 million gallons of explosive materials on a major fault line. What were Tacoma's residents thinking in rejecting this great plan!? Go back to Seattle, idiot.

    1. dirtydeen   8 years ago

Not to mention the fact that Tacoma's City Council and Mayor were overwhelmingly in favor of this proposal, which makes this cartoon even less cohesive.

  16. Art Gecko   8 years ago

I remember the Tacoma Aroma. It boggles my mind that anybody would live there voluntarily.

  17. adampeart   8 years ago

We moved to Tacoma in 2014 from seattle for the same exact reasons. I love this animation. It expresses everything we've been bitching about since moving to the Pacific Northwest 10 years ago. My wife and I are dying to meet someone with a like mind. I'm also an artist. Would be cool to meet Peter and his significant other. We've had a business in Seattle for nine years and still do, and the irony is is that we have to live in the closet so to speak because we cannot express our political views without being boycotted by the open minded folks of madrona.

Ah, gentrification. Curse, boon, and ethically confusing to everyone involved.

Once again, the only SAFE SEX is that with your lawful Wife. Anyone else is risky.

Funny the SCOTUS in Lawrence declared that morality cannot be a basis for law, thus "striking down" a law in Texas. What that stuipd court failed to consider is that THEIR action was also based on morality.. a very different one, but a moral standard none the less. Now, these Title Nine cases are based on a moral standard as well, unevenly applied to select students, and obliviating their right to Due Process in the course of the kangaroo court sessions.

These mock trials, railroading students without any of the safeguards guaranteed under Due Process. must end.. now. Accused MUST have their right to testify, produce their own witnesses, examine those of the prosecution, examine ALL the evidence being used against them, demand full transcripts of testimony for later use.... anythjing short is a serious breach of our laws.

  23. OregonB   8 years ago

I kinda like Tacoma, but Seattle has gone beyond bonkers in its politics.

  24. OregonB   8 years ago

there's always Olympia! There's a blue collar downtown for ya and a very colorful and well-fed population of raffishly bundled street drinkers.
