Betsy DeVos Confirmed as Education Secretary: Enjoy the Delicious Tears of Teachers Unions
'Betsy DeVos's policies will kill children. That is not an exaggeration in any sense.'

With Vice President Mike Pence formally casting the vote to break a 50-50 tie in the Senate, Betsy DeVos has been confirmed as the next Secretary of Education.
DeVos, whose vigorous enthusiasm for school choice and presumed support of Title IX reform make her one of Trump's better Cabinet picks, encountered furious opposition from Democrats. Indeed, the left fought DeVos harder than they fought Jeff Sessions, Trump's Attorney General pick. Sessions opposes criminal justice reform, asset forfeiture reform, and immigration reform, but knocking out DeVos was a higher priority for liberals.
That's due to the all-consuming influence of public teachers unions, which remain one of the most powerful political forces in the Democratic Party and a constant obstacle to education reform. If DeVos can do anything to diminish the teachers unions' ability to thwart change in the education system, her nomination will have been well worth the fight.
Needless to say, enemies of education reform are freaking out.
Randi Weingarten called DeVos's confirmation "a sad day for children."
Here was Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson in a since-deleted tweet:

Not an exaggeration in any sense.
The Women's March tweeted an anti-DeVos statement as well—undermining the idea that the movement is grounded in opposition to mistreatment of women:

Here was Silicon Valley's Kumail Nanjiani:

But it was the Dems who voted strictly along party lines: two Republicans actually voted against DeVos. And no one deserves as much criticism for using children as pawns as union leadership does. The unions claim to be serving the interests of kids and families, but their job is to protect bad teachers from accountability and use membership fees to fund left-wing causes.
And then there was this:

Vouchers, one of the most important school choice reforms, allow disadvantaged minority students to take the money that would have gone toward their obligatory, failing school and spend it somewhere else. It's the public education system that creates de facto segregation: by forcing students to attend the school assigned to them.
The lies the left has told to try to convince the public that school choice is a bad thing are nothing short of remarkable. No, charter schools in Detroit are not a miserable failure, as The New York Times claimed. Nor are economists weirdly skeptical of school choice.
As Nick Gillespie wrote earlier today:
The Democrats are closely allied with teachers unions, who threatened by any and all changes to the educational status quo. So of course they oppose Betsy DeVos and they will use any club on the ground to beat down her chances. But to the extent that DeVos—and Trump, too, who has been outspoken on the need for more school choice—are in favor of giving more students and more parents more choices when it comes educating their kids, they are on the side of the angels. A recent poll found that 68 percent of Americans favor expanding school choice, including 55 percent of self-described Democrats, 75 percent among Latinos, 75 percent among millennials, and 72 percent among blacks. Contemporary politics may not allow partisans to admit that (or even see it), but for those of us who are neither pro-Trump across the board or always anti-Democratic Party, the conversation surrounding the DeVos nomination is everything that's wrong with Washington.
Of course, if Democrats remain utterly opposed to DeVos, they still have one option left: support Rep. Thomas Massie's bill to eliminate the Education Department. That would sure teach libertarians and conservatives a lesson.

Everybody knows women do better in public schools where only 1 in 0.5 women get raped.
At least the women's march one got something right. People involved with schools at the local level have more power in the education system than the DoEd secretary has.
My last month paycheck was for 11000 dollars... All i did was simple online work from comfort at home for 3-4 hours/day that I got from this agency I discovered over the internet and they paid me for it 95 bucks every hour... This is what I do

Stealing money from our already underfunded public school system and handing it to a select privileged few is something Hitler would have done.
and laughed while doing it...hahahahahahahahahaha
"Stealing money from our already underfunded public school system and handing it to a select privileged few is something Hitler would have done."
Yes. Yes, I would have.
/Hitler
Obviously, the public schools DESERVE that money, not the KIDS!
Etiquette? Don't you first need to understand the concept of "stealing"? Stealing is taking somebody's money or property without their consent. The money that is taken from them to fund Government spending against their will, whether spent on public schools or private schools, is the "stolen" money.
Check your sarcasm meter, new guy.
I really think people should lurk for a year before posting.
It's what I did.
Plus, I automatically assume everyone is being a sarcastic ass.
I lurked for almost two years and have no doubt I come across as wooden or worse.
No you are just a sarcastic ass.
This was sarcasm wasn't it Fist? That's what it's called when you intentionally say something utterly wrong as though it was right.
Actually...
20. The state is to be responsible for a fundamental reconstruction of our whole national education program, to enable every capable and industrious German to obtain higher education and subsequently introduction into leading positions. The plans of instruction of all educational institutions are to conform with the experiences of practical life. The comprehension of the concept of the State must be striven for by the school [Staatsb?rgerkunde] as early as the beginning of understanding. We demand the education at the expense of the State of outstanding intellectually gifted children of poor parents without consideration of position or profession.
"We demand the education at the expense of the State of outstanding intellectually gifted children of poor parents without consideration of position or profession."
See, that's why our socialists aren't fascists. They spend all that 'State' money trying to raise up the kids at the bottom, rather than on the kids who might actually, you know, benefit from it.
My facebook is absolutely unhinged. Republicans 'asserted their dominance in confirming Devos', "we can't stop fighting', 'Progressives and conservatives who care about their kids' public education are mobilzed to vote in 2018!"
"We lost a battle but we can't lose the war"
Says progs who went to 'good' public school districts. Funny, I don't see anyone who had to go to a high school in Oakland or East San Jose posting shit about Devos right now
this
Assuming they even went to public school.
I can tell you, I don't have the faintest idea what the Sec of Ed actually does, if much of anything. Nor does a single person I know spitting fire on Facebook right now.
They issue annoying Dear Colleague memoranda that deprive (male) students of their due process rights. They also threaten to suspend funding to universities that don't bend the knee, which apparently was fine for Obama's administration but is now an unconscionable infringement of federalist protections.
The SoEd guarantees the flow of money to the NEA.
Good point. Curriculum is developed locally while most funding is handled on a local, county or state basis. The feds only throw in some more so they can threaten to pull it if they want to flex their muscles to get locals to do their bidding.
My FB feed is silent. Of course, I unfollowed everyone that bitched about the DeVos vote before it happened.
Doesn't that cut into the cackling, and the gloating?
mine's not bad. some posts from folks with dyslexic kids who are unhappy about the support they're receiving at public schools and are curious about voucher programs. of course my feed network may be gunshy after i posted all those RCTs for Boston and NYC and the national study by DoEd/Mathematica showing how beneficial and popular charters are in poor urban areas.
I guess we're supposed to be appalled at the majority party 'asserting its dominance,' but it is a war composed of battle in which we must triumph.
Republicans 'asserted their dominance in confirming Devos',
Honestly that's what this was all about. Now the Dems know their place on this issue. They're in the back seat now.
Teacher union power is the key -- the Dems had to freak out to keep their patrons happy. It's quite telling that this was more important than Sessions as AG.
Yes, it's what The Patriarchy does, baby! You'll learn to like it!
More than a few otherwise intelligent people on my Facebook thing are framing this as a war on the working class by a woman who has "never had to work a day in her life". I think, at this point, their shit is well and truly lost.
None of my friends on FB care about this. Unless they are teachers, in which case they are already wailing and rending their garments.
Personally, I try to stay out of political fights, but in this case I'd chime in because I feel so strongly about this. I was able to move my family 20 miles to a better school district. People with less money than I have are not able to do this. They have fewer choices, and it isn't fair.
It sort of pisses me off how I have family members who think CPS should take my kids because of the school I send them to. Most of them are in such a bubble they don't realize they know people who they are calling child abusers.
i have a college aged cousin who is absolutely convinced that america isn't the country he grew up in (which is especially cute given his age) because this one woman is now education secretary.
yes, his parents are committed progressives too. shame of it is he's a damn bright kid. might take years to recover, if he ever does.
Were were they comitted to? The State home for the bewildered?
From my feed:
"Well, there goes public schools."
"Get ready for the abolishment of public schools. We're only going to have private schools."
If only!
I'm holding back from saying "good riddance".
This article is a joke, but I support this choice for Trump's next epic troll:

Betsy DeVos - superhitler
In the future it's almost certain that Hitler will be a footnote, once every evil person is compared to Betsy DeVos.
Did you thank Kamala for being a corrupt, evil bitch who allowed her office to withhold evidence and perjure themselves, and who got where she is by sleeping with Willie Brown while you were at it?
Fake news.
Hey, everybody, Larkspur is really sorry that shit is fucked up. So you've got that going for you.
Dafuq is a balloon-juice anyhows?

You are worse than I ever was.
Just for that:

It might actually be troubling if we didn't know these fucks are complete hoplophobes. Otherwise it's just laughable and delicious.
Who plays the role of Robespierre? Kamala Harris? Jessica Valenti? No wait, I know:

But remember, it's the right that engages in political violence, not those oh so tolerant leftists.
Send that comment to Preet Bharara.
I fear that, one of these days, these fucks will get the civil war they seem to be itching for.
If that happens, though, I really don't think it's going to play out the way they seem to imagine it would.
You mean that a military coup in actuality wouldn't give Sarah Silverman the government that she wants? Color me shocked.
It will play badly for everyone.
Dafuq is a balloon-juice..?
Something that leaks out of a balloon knot.
+1
I called Kamala Harris to see if she would do an amateur video with Catherine Harris .
Two CongressCritters, One Cup?
Fuck. Not enough brain bleach in the world to get that out of my head.
Illuminati confirmed.
Finally, the Christian Right has its dream candidate in the White House!
I didn't get the news until just now, but this sounds awesome.

So what's the synthesis between the Alex Jones/Infowars thesis and the Balloon Juice/DU antithesis?
I think that's how you get warp drive.
If history is any guide, Jews get fucked over.
Odd how "Christian Supremacists" don't want to force others into Christian schools, but these people do want to force Christians into secular schools. Almost like projection.
Odd how "Christian Supremacists" don't want to force others into Christian schools, but these people do want to force Christians into secular schools. Almost like projection.
Bashing DeVos's Christianity is just ridiculous. There's no sign it has any relationship to her views on school choice and obviously the President is pretty secular. It's just another way to be smug which will do nothing but bring us more Trump.
Let's be honest Secretary DeVos's religion plays at least some part in her support for school vouchers. She likely understands the frustrations of a lot of religious families who would rather have their children in non secular school but can't come up with the funds to send them on their own. Vouchers help them achieve what they believe is best for their children.
Unions should be happy about vouchers. It creates all sorts of new entities for them to unionize. I'm sure there are some non-public schools they could convince to join a union. Sure most of the schools will fail in the same way public schools have, but the process of creative destruction should give them an almost endless supply of new hosts to target.
I'd like to see them tweet that to his face.
"Apocalyptic Christian Dominionist is like saying limited government Communist.
We're all going to die! Let's take over!
I'm sure Kamala Harris will be really effective arm-twisting Republicans. She's sure to get a whole lot of concessions outta them.
She doesn't have an aversion to sleazy old man hog, so maybe instead of twisting arms she will be twisting cocks.
You know, with her hands and stuff.
I don't know wtf "Balloon Juice" is, but i just learned that "Talibangelicals" can be said without anyone laughing

I'm guessing Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson doesn't know what the word "exaggeration" means. Surely another fine example of the quality of education one can expect from our public school system.
You can't work there unless you're an idiot.
But, Scarlett Johannsen and Keira Knightley naked in the same photo shoot.
Damn
*perks up*
I'm sorry, what was that?
That's both kinds of women I like. Ok, it's just one. Nude.
I know, right? My head literally exploded when I read that comment.
Literally.
How many of these people have any idea what the secretary of education actually does?
Why, they know it's a high level Federal department head, which means that all the kingly (or queenly??) decrees about all education policy come down to the proles in the various states.
She takes over the Colonial fleet when the rest of the chain of command is killed by Cylons, duh.
Don't tell any leftie friends that, as of today, DeVos is only a handful of people away from the presidency. She's actually quite a bit closer than she will be once the Cabinet is all set.
oh man, now I'm going to pine for someone's hysterical article about how DeVos is now a "heartbeat from the presidency!!!" C'mon, Slate, don't fail me now!
If she's capable of finding someone who can kill Mattis, DeVos deserves the top job.
This is why I read Reason comments.
That and because now I know Robbie has already broken his New Year's Resolution with the "delicious tears" quote...
I learned the other day that the Sec of Agriculture is the one Cabinet member who does not attend SOTU meetings, in case the entire rest of the government is wiped out. At which point Ag is next in line of succession. Needless to say, this was from early days when agriculture was the primary economic driver of the country.
Probably just a custom. I imagine someone else could be secured away in the line.
It's not always the Secretary of Agriculture, but it has been on some occasions - https://goo.gl/StjPZw
It is most often one of the lower profile cabinet posts, though, like Ag, Transportation, Energy, HUD, Commerce, Interior, etc.
If I recall correctly, it goes through the order in which the department was created. Education is pretty far down the list.
It does, but in a Clancyesque twist the idea everyone else in the cabinet and the Speaker of the house is dead.
Sounds like a premise for a TV show.
They murder children evidently
Only after they drink the child blood of course. They relegate the mostly-empty corpses to the Jews to have the remainder bled out into golden chalices.
From my reads (on twitter and fb) the Sec of Ed is somekind of super-powered, critical point of failure in the American education system.
Best to just git rid of it.

Someone's trying to walk back on being a complete dumbass yesterday.
Yesterday?! Yesterday was mild.
I thought this was penance for his lies in The Daily Beast.

Really, much longer, but the whole Milo/riot thing was a low point even for Rico.
Just so we're clear, school choice is bad because it allows parents to make informed decisions about their children's education which leads to inequality because unfit parents are going to send their children to failing schools that will be padded by less taxpayer money than before. Is that it?
.
Close. You forgot that homo-murdering Christians are now in charge, teachers will be even more demonized and underpaid, and lunches will be full of high fat, low carb options.
Low carb?! Not while Iowa is the first primary!
and lunches will be full of high fat, low carb options.
*Michelle Obama faints from hypoglycemia*
as it was explained to me, school choice only exists because public schools are so bad, but public schools are only bad because there's school choice.
School choice exists? Where?
Just so we're clear, school choice is bad because it allows parents to make informed decisions about their children's education which leads to inequality because unfit parents are going to send their children to failing schools that will be padded by less taxpayer money than before.
And of course, the progs also argue that school choice is TEH RACIST because minority kids will be "stuck" in those failing schools with even less money. Because the baked in - but unspoken - assumption is that minority parent are more likely to be unfit than white parents.
But progressives aren't racists at all...
You also forgot about how there just aren't enough private schools so it will be unfair to those that don't get accepted, because there's just no way new schools would open to fill a market demand. There are only X number of schools today so only X number of schools will be there tomorrow.
Just wait until school choice gets a hold. Then the argument will change to public schools need to stay open even if only one student attends and be fully funded. That extra tax burden will be "fairly" distributed to make sure or public sector employees aren't unfairly put out of work.
"It's the public education system that creates de facto segregation: by forcing students to attend the school assigned to them."
I'd say its the cultural reality that people segregate themselves, that leads to segregation in all these local institutions. Most parents would probably put their kids in the local school anyway. If you freed that up you might get some tiger moms doing long commutes, but every school can't be providing school bus service to the whole metro area.
The schadenfreude hard on continues.
If Scott Pruitt gets the EPA Administrator gig, I think I'm going to go into toxic shock from prog tears poisoning. I'm getting engorged as it is. These euphemisms.
The technical term is "schadenboner".
You could hammer nails with mine right now. Metaphorically of course.
Oh, man, Robby Soave comes out swinging.
PS - It's *Randi* Weingarten, not Rand.
The Amazing Randi Weingarten?
If by amazing you really mean a nasty little bottom-feeding troll of a woman.
Weingarten's just a liar, not an Honest Liar.
He corrected the spelling.
I haven't gone on Facebook in weeks. It is unbearable. I am just so tempted to respond to people's ten paragraph rants with two sentences of logic and fact to refute it all. I hate everybody. The schadenfreude is definitely still strong.
I usually tell progs that they probably just have low blood sugar. I then suggest they go out and get some Trumpburgers, and have a Trumptastic day in Trumpmerica.
They pretty much lose their shit at that point.
I have family decrying the end is nigh for public schools. These are people that graduated high school before the DOE existed but are convinced schools will shutdown withou the right top man there now.
So.......lots of celebration?
"Such a slap in the face, all educators have to fight this woman". "Pay for play", "Threat to kids". Yeah my facebook is taking this well.
Let alone these people never would send their kids to a bad school, either private school, move to a good school, or you don't have kids.
And what is it that the Dept of Education Does? Before Carter gave it as a gift to Unions, people couldn't get education???
The auction markets for new orphans poised to burgeon. Buy low, sell high!
Well, before O-care, I watched the PDW come by in the mornings and shovel dead elders and infants off the streets and into the garbage trucks!
Ah, the good old days! These days they just let them rot wherever the keel over!
MY facebook is full of all kinds of mawkish praising and thank you to teachers.
Angels! Every one of them.
Especially those in the rubber room for beating on kids.
Mawkish... that's a great word for it.
Too much of that becomes vexatious.
"Pay for play" is evil when poor people can do it, apparently, but no problem when Obama, Biden, Clinton, or basically every single other politician the people who are saying this support do it. Fuck 'em.
Kumail Nanjiani makes Narendra Modi look like Mahatma Gandhi.
Kumail Nanjiani is literally Donald Trump.
Oh, no! Not that! Please don't throw me in that briar patch!
All public sector unions should be outlawed. And as a non profit and not having to pay taxes why are they meddling in private sector affairs. Actually public sector union employees should not even be allowed to vote because there is a definite conflict of interest.
I like your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
They are in much of the civilized world; you know, the places that people like Obama, Sanders, and Clinton keep saying they want to emulate.

Public-sector unions are not needed in countries where there is a real public sector.
'Betsy DeVos's policies will kill children. That is not an exaggeration in any sense.'
i'm not seeing how this is necessarily a bad thing....have you met kids today?
Government bullying kills children already.
I'd bet the first thing parents with brand-new vouchers do is yank their kids out of any school filled with police.
Police = failing school
DEPOSE DEVOS: VOTE H.R. 899.
Yes, I know. But there's still alliteration.
I'm having a hard time keeping my "Black Lives Matter" talking points in order. Is this the month they aren't for segregation and next month they are scheduled to be back to pro-segregation? It's so confusing.
The point isn't to support a coherent cause, it is to be super angry all the time.

DeVos confirmed for DoE. Musical Theater programs hardest hit.
So what would the progs reaction be:
Devos who they don't like says she wants to get rid of the DOE?
That womens' march tweet is actually completely true in the abstract, but it comes from a completely idiotic place.
It reads like the feel-good word salads they tend to emit; I think they're only correct on accident.
The local NBC affiliate just led the 4pm news with "Is this the end of public schools?" Unfortunately, no.
Like I said, musical theater programs hardest hit.
Dems ideas: Throw money at education for 40 years, watch education continuously decline. New plan to improve education, more money!!
Betsy DeVos: Lets try something that hasn't been failing to work for 40 years....
Dems: OMG, she's going to Destroy Education!!!
Dems: OMG, she's going to Destroy Education Cut off our funding stream!!!
But they're not allowed to admit that.
The best part of this is, that they did it to themselves. I guarantee you that every prog crying and butt hurt about this thought Harry Reid ending the filibuster for cabinet nominees was like the greatest thing ever and was telling everyone who would listen how "Harry Reid just totally destroyed the Republicans" at the time.
Thanks to Reid, the Democrats had no way to stop this. Thanks Harry, you rotten miserable old bastard.
The best part of this, is that certain children may be able to get a decent education who previously would have no chance.
No. I mean the best part of the Prog reaction, not Devos becoming secretary.
Confirmed: reading variations on this very thought still isn't old. Yummy.
They never thought they'd lose another election.
No they didn't. And that is a curious opinion to have when you consider the bottom had completely fallen out of the party at the Congressional and state levels.
They confused a lot of people falling in love with the idea ofvoting for a a cipher of a black Democrat because he was a black guy with falling in love with and voting for their policies.
All I know is I died a little inside every day I went to public school. I never felt more alive than the day after graduation.
I know what you mean. I was able to get out 2 years early with the help of parental endorsement. The rotten cunt of a Governor for my ensured that happiness loophole for future students a few years later. Sorry kids, it's compulsory until age 18 now.
*closed that happiness loophole
I remember my dad asking me at the dinner table once in a while "So did you learn anything new in school today?"
The answer was always "No." Except for the occasional math class.
I did have one good high school math teacher, I took an elective he was teaching just because he treated the students like adults. He wanted me to join Mathletes and I told him I had absolutely no interest in doing anything after school that resembled work unless it was a paying job (which I already had). To his credit he never bothered me about it ever again. The elective was "Computer Math Programming" which was so great I chose that as my college major.
It's sad though that 12 years of school and I only respected about 15% of my teachers total. The rest were stupid and arrogant, especially my first grade teacher, and really had no business being within 200 feet of children.
I've been suggesting that the last two years of High School be eliminated reciently. It's a great way to make libs further lose their minds. I felt I learned no new concepts outside of some math and chemistry past the ninth grade. All of which could have been taugh to me earlier if my teachers and school district had been efficient.
I withdrew 2 years early and was doing exactly what I wanted to do: working part time and going to university as a "continuing education" student before matriculating into a bachelor degree program. I had already completed a differential equations course before my beers had completed their AP calculus courses. I learned all my important interpersonal skills working at Radio Shack rather than the teenager prison. I concur fully with your thought.
Is a "lib" a libertarian? A Women's Libber? A liberal? If the third, which sense of "liberal" do you mean? And what is the opposite of "lib"? If you do not categorize yourself as a "lib," in what category do you place yourself (it doesn't necessarily have to have a three-letter name)?
I always figured I just happened to be stuck in a really bad situation and that when I grew up and got into the real world things would make sense and other adults wouldn't be so ignorant.
Needless to say, I was greatly disappointed.
I learned quite a bit in public school. Much of it not what they thought they were teaching.
My high school guidance counselor gently trying to explain to me that I was not college material being a priceless memory.
Although, at the time I actually felt sorry for her, when I really should have been feeling sorry for all the kids who thought she had a fucking clue.
Dem logic
"America should welcome immigrants and refugees who leaves their homeland by choice, but American children in bad schools should be forced to stay there".
School choice is one of those issues where liberals take the concept of "equality" to the level of collectivism. Literally, if we can't help EVERYONE, then we can't help ANYONE. If a wealthy family dislikes an under performing public school would prefer to go to a school that weeds out troublemakers, that's default discrimination on so many counts.
"That school is has too many Mexicans" - yes that's something Asians will never say. Like literally. I know, because I am one.
Come on, we all know the reason why the teacher's unions fear school choice. The real life implication is writen on the wall.
Choosing your school = bad. Choosing your gender = good.
Pretty much sums up the evil of progressives.
Progressives have the crab bucket syndrome applied to everyone but themselves of course. Funny they are the ones that whine about race to the bottom when their policies result in a race to the bottom.
Hey, unless we can find all the children in the burning building, we're not going to take any children out of the burning building! No child left behind! Or, all of them left behind. Either way, equality, and equality is good.
The left opposes her not because of some mustache twirling union boss, but because "school choice" is a code word for killing public schools in favor of private -- and let's be honest about her intentions, more religious -- schools. There are many good public schools in addition to the bad ones that people do not want to see eviscerated by her influence. Separation of churche and state is one of those little perks of being in a democracy that many of us want to keep.
Separation of school and state is one of those little perks of being in a constitutional republic that many of us want to keep.
Your tears are lovely. You should write a letter to Harry Reid and tell him how angry you are that he took away the power to filibuster cabinet nominations. Thanks to him, the boot might not stay on poor people's faces quite as much. They might be able to go to decent schools. The horror.
How would school choice eviscerate good public schools?
This is never explained. It is almost as if progs are worried that the parents won't make the correct decision (funny thing is the progs love private schools for themselves)
The progs would love for parents to be able to make choices for their kids education, but then some of them might make the wrong choices, and then where would we be?
How would this kill public schools? Are you saying you think public schools aren't very good to begin with and is why you are worried?
Take funding away from public schools and give it to private schools, I ask how that wouldn't destroy them.
From what I hear it's having a pretty bad effect in rural areas -- an acquaintance from Alabama says it's made the public schools worse, and kids who r ally need help are still going there instead of picking some of these wonderful choices they're supposed to be getting.
I hope to be proven wrong. I sure as hell hope kids get better education from school choice if it's done properly. I just don't want those choices to end up being "even worse, underfunded public schools or religious private schools."
That isn't taking funding away. The parents would be choosing to go to the other schools then if so which suggests the public schools aren't up to part there. It isn't as if the state would be making that decision. If they are good then they don't have to worry.
School choice in alabama where exactly?
up to par
The department of education secretary does not have that much power to just wave a wand and get rid of public schools. Schools are mainly run by state and locality anyway. I am personally not sure why there is a federal DOE anyway
The department of education secretary does not have that much power to just wave a wand and get rid of public schools. Schools are mainly run by state and locality anyway. I am personally not sure why there is a federal DOE anyway
If a private school doesn't do its job, then the parents pull the kids and the school goes out of business. If a public school doesn't do their job, then they get rewarded with extra funding.
This
Because, as we all know, Catholic schools are the most horrific, bible filled, science denying places ever!
Destroyed or not why does that matter?
We don't fund public schools in order to have public schools any more than you buy a drill to have a drill.
You buy a drill to make holes.
And you fund schools - any schools - to educate children.
The schools that tend to do the best job will tend to get the most students.
There are non-religious private schools out there. Why would the good public schools have to worry as won't parents choose to send their kids there?
Separation of the economy and state should be as strict as the separation of church and state.
I would agree with this and give up school choice in exchange
No, "chuch v state" is a convenient excuse. Vouchers are just a tiny part of the broad umbrella of school choice, but do you hear people saying choice except for vouchers is great? no, they oppose ALL CHOICE, period. So that's how you can tell it's a lie.
The Dept of Education only exists in the first place because of the NEA and Carter's promise to them in exchange for support. It has to do with money and power, not the possibility of vouchers going to religious schools.
Except that the state is deliberately competing with and killing off the church. Let's not pretend the situation is neutral, when religious parents are required to spend money they would use on religious schools to purchase a public education.
Yep. And actually take a look at voutures, not all the funding follows a kid, a portion of it stays with the state run schoo which means the more kids that leave with a vouture there is a greater per pupal amount to be spent in the state school.
It's not a "code word" at all: if private schools perform better than public schools, then public schools ought to die quickly. That's indeed the purpose and intent of school choice.
Well, and that's another reason for school choice: parents can choose to send their kids to the kind of school that agrees with their religious beliefs.
The purpose and intent of advancing school choice, in my opinion, is to introduce (further) a risk of failure to public schools. I don't care if public schools die off, only bad schools - public or private - as determined by the children's parents' voting with their feet.
I went to a Catholic school with a sizable Hindu population and the occasional Muslim or Jew. The idea that they are indoctrination factories is purely a leftist fantasy. Non-catholic students aren't required to take part in any Catholic activities, and the education (for private Catholic schools) is broadly superior. My school's library had books by Marx, Freud, and Nietzsche and I'd read them before class to try to piss off my teachers, some of whom were priests; to my disappointment they never objected.
Also, school choice would allow parents to take their kids out of shitty public schools and put them in good public schools in other districts, so only the bad public schools that no one wants to send their kids to get shut down; the good ones would do even better.
"My school's library had books by Marx, Freud, and Nietzsche and I'd read them before class to try to piss off my teachers..."
They knew that inoculations are best done while young.
Betsy Devos:
"My family is the biggest contributor of soft money to the Republican National Committee. I have decided to stop taking offense," she wrote, "at the suggestion that we are buying influence. Now I simply concede the point. They are right. We do expect something in return. We expect a return on our investment."
Good about time. Results
No wonder the teacher's union is having conniption fits - honesty has been introduced. This likely spells the collapse of the system.
Papist of Tammanny Hall couldn't've said it better. Incidentally, her home is where Chicago Tribune reporter Jake Lingle used to hang out. When IRS agent Frank Wilson told Tribune magnate (and bank director) McCormick he wanted to question Lingle, the reporter turned up riddled with bullets within 24 hours.
What?
When you leave something out from a quote you need to indicate that.
Here is what deVos actually said:
That sort of dishonest quote mining probably explains a good deal of the outrage among the retards over DeVos.
Allow me to sift through Obama's autobiography and find that, ah here it is: "I.... hate....Jewish....people..." on pages 124 - 177!
There ya go, Obama hates the Jews!
(disclaimer: this entire post is sarcasm; don't sue me for libel, I've never seen a word o Obama's autobio)
Wow, you better recheck your source. I'm pretty sure "I" was on the frst page if not the cover.
Without the Federal DoE, who will keep the school-to-prison pipeline flowing?
I'm not a fan of Trump, but it sure is fun watching the Left come unhinged. Suicides? What?! Is that because kids might actually go to a school that's challenging?
This attitude is exactly why libertarians and left wingers will most likely never work together to fight the mor fascist elements of a Trump presidency.
The left is interested in power period.
No.
The left and libertarians will never work together to fight the supposed fascism (that word doesn't mean what you think it means) because the left is only interested in having the levers of power to themselves.
When a sitting senator says that the metric of the education system is money, you can go right off and fuck yourself.
And what exactly do I think it means?
The right often use it to mean "criticism". I think it maybe has something to do with the White House wanting to destroy the press and telling people to get all their news directly from the president. Bills being introduced to allow peaceful protestors to be charged with terrorism (see Doug Ericksen's "economic terrorism" proposal. Federal agencies being forbidden from tweeting information while the president goes on tweeting "fake news" at everything he disagrees with, even when facts in said news are verified. I know, nothing's happened yet beyond rhetoric and temper tantrums. I just hope it stays that way.
I think it maybe has something to do with the White House wanting to destroy the press
I don't think he needs to make that a priority, they seem to be doing that themselves quite well.
and telling people to get all their news directly from the president.
And this is worse than the canned press release by the modern lazy journalist because...oh wait, it's Twitter, the scrawling suicide note of Western civilization, so fair enough.
Bills being introduced to allow peaceful protestors to be charged with terrorism
If only there was some document that hadn't been dragged through the mud for decades by the left and right that stopped this kind of thing.
I haven't seen any "fascist elements of a Trump presidency".
I have seen plenty of "fascist elements" in Clinton's and the Democrats' political agenda.
That's why libertarians and left-wingers won't work together: libertarians don't work with fascists.
Then it seems like you don't know the meaning of "fascist" either. Nobody threatened to destroy the press under Clinton or Obama as far as I remember. Nobody threatened marriage equality. Nobody carted members of your side off to prison when your side burned Obama in effigy or called him "nigger president" (nobody's carted Trump protestors off to prison yet, but in another year or two I'm not so sure I'll be saying that).
Nobody threatened to destroy the press under Clinton or Obama as far as I remember.
Rational was likely referring to Clinton the 2nd, and her position on Citizens United. Which is a fundamental attack on freedom of speech.
Nobody threatened marriage equality.
I seem to recall Mr. Obama being against gay marriage in 2008.
your side off to prison when your side burned Obama in effigy or called him "nigger president"
"Why are you people so against us, all I'm doing is associating you with racists, engaging in tribalist rhetoric, and being entirely dishonest."
Hmmm, I wonder why we have no interest in working with the left...perhaps it has something to do with scumbag behaviour like this?
nobody's carted Trump protestors off to prison yet
Dependent on how many of them destroy property and attack people, then those ones will probably end up in prison.
Obama was never against gay marriage for more than 5 minutes on the debate floor (which was stupid, I'll grant).
People on the right *did* do many racist things like that. The far right has a problem with bigotry and some people here seem
comfortable with them, that's my honest impression. I was careful to say your side and not you (noting that you generalized my side as violent protestors) and in other comments I did admit to stupidity from my side as well. But feel free to keep calling me scumbag.
I shall, because you associated libertarians with racists. That makes you a scumbag, and is one of the reasons we have no interest in working with you. Your 'honest impression' is to lie about us. You just dishonestly smeared us and expect us accept it. You're fundamentally untrustworthy and spit on the people you want as allies.
Obama was never against gay marriage for more than 5 minutes on the debate floor
No, he was against gay marriage until it was politically convenient not to be. Which I don't believe to be true for a second, he was always in favour of it, but he lied so he could achieve power. Boy, isn't it great when politicians lie to your face just they can achieve power?
I wonder why libertarians would have a problem with all this pathetic dishonesty.
"Nobody threatened to destroy the press under Clinton or Obama as far as I remember."
Scooter Libby went to prison for a lesser sort of memory failure. Because if you do not recognize the name James Risen then you are too ignorant to be making the arguments you make.
Actually they'll never work together because they have almost no common interests.
Left wingers want a bigger welfare state and greater government control over the economy, over our sex lives (in the form of prostitution and pornography laws, and all the Title IX bullshit), over speech. Even where they're supposed to be good (e.g., foreign wars, defense spending) they prove to be about as bad as the GOP.
Why would I 'work with' the left against Trump? Why would I prefer a leftist who views me, a 'cishet' white male, as the worst creature in the world, and openly favors discrimination against me ("affirmative action") to the guy who might discriminate against some other group of people to which I don't belong?
Leftists have given me an impression these past few weeks of the kind of thing they plan to replace Trump with. It doesn't put my mind at ease. The "revolution" is certainly not going to do me any good.
Let's see...protesting police brutality? marriage equality? Preserving freedom of the press, civil disobedience, privacy? Protesting stupid foreign policy where we bomb innocents? I would think liberals and libertarians would be aligned on all those issues. We diverge on stuff like gun control (though nobody I know on the left wants to actually take people's guns away) and regulations and government spending, fine -- I'd think those debates could be put aside for now. The hardest area to reconcile there is feeling like the left hates white people and tells the poor guy losing his house that he should check his white privilege. Maybe I'm deluded but I also associate that with the fringe left.
The white guilt mentality grown out of control is one of the uglier sides of traditional left wing politics. I once wrote a nasty letter to my alma mater for having a course called "Stop White People", and my impression was that half or more than half of the left were just as pissed as I was about that. So I wouldn't say that we all hate white people (and I'm a white male myself). Interestingly, our perception of libertarians (perhaps flawed) is that they'll defend
a klansman's right to insult minorities but not minorities' rights to shout back at them, and that they think any form of criticism is fascism. Both sides are probably wrong here.
Ok, let's get one really stupid thing out of the way: "The Women's March tweeted an anti-DeVos statement as well?undermining the idea that the movement is grounded in opposition to mistreatment of women."
Ummm, so women opposing the nomination of a woman amounts to mistreatment? I guess yet another category has arisen with Trump: along with AlternativeFacts, now there is AlternativeMeaning.
But, let's get to the meat. I personally am against American unions and American institutions that use union labor. Both are stuck in the 1930's in a perpetual struggle for the non-zero side of the zero-sum game.
All of northern europe's highly successful education systems (at least in comparison to USA) are end-to-end unionized. And Germany is the most unionized country on earth. That's because they saw the problem was NOT about unions, it was the model for how unions and the institutions employing them that was the problem. And, unlike USA, fixed the problem. Unions sit on the boards of all public corporations. Teaching is the profession from which most of the political classes. And the latter is pretty much true in all those other high-performing advanced economies, which accounts for their relatively vastly better run societies and governments, I figure.
So stop being a typical 'Murrkin navel gazer (or shameless opportunist) and look up and around and fix this.
What are you basing these better run societies and governments on?
I have no problem with American unions ... as long as they aren't given any legal special standing and that the police go after them the same way they would go after any other criminal if they engage in what would be considered criminal behavior for anyone else.
Now the "vastly better run" societies and governments part I'd have a serious problem with. I guess that depends on whether you're more concerned with social feelgoodism than freedom.
I hear you. I lean left and so do most people I know, and I come here sometimes to see different views. I expected to see centrists, but instead I'm finding just as much blind tribal dislike of the left as some of the less rational among us have toward libertarians. Explaining why Devos might be good is one thing, but comments like "I love seeing the left pissed off" and "the left only wants power" and suggesting they want all kids besides their own to have crappy education? That's just as bad as the people on my side who think libertarians want Mad Max to be real life. Man, we've all got work to do.
The thing is once the left gets power again they will forget libertarians exist and what they had claimed to be for before. Why team up with that? It is the same with team red. It is futile. There is lack of principle
Perhaps there could be more like you fwiw.
I get that fear. I can't speak for everyone in the left but not all of us have that attitude. My wife and I have both rolled out eyes at some of the more fringe left elements (like people telling white women in the march to check their privilege because they're white). I just don't want to see a world where freedom of the press goes out the window for both the right and left and we end up in a nuclear apocalypse from having pissed off three quarters of the major foreign powers.
I suppose the main point should be that everyone is a bit too focused on showing their allegiances, rather than talking about solutions. I personally am fine and excited about this nomination, but am not fooling myself about the amount of work that needs to happen on multiple levels to better education here. My two biggest problems with this whole ordeal are:
1) Most (not all) people tend to focus on one little aspect of education. Whether it's unions, spending in general, school choice, etc. But I'm of the opinion that better education won't occur without work on each of these areas and more.
2) if you do have a different opinion, you must hate children. And in my personal case with everyone I've spoken to, that's the response I get almost immediately. I find it insufferable.
I personally don't care if schools are all private or public, but I want accountability and the ability to adapt. I'm a huge fan of of many elements of Asian and Scandinavian schools (which I've attended myself).
I just don't want to see a world where freedom of the press goes out the window for both the right and left and we end up in a nuclear apocalypse from having pissed off three quarters of the major foreign powers.
Good, you're in luck, that's extremely unlikely to happen (and the percentage really isn't going up because Trump's in power). Hyperbolic statements like this just delegitimize your position.
You seem like one of the more hostile people here. In the comment you responded to I don't think I said one negative thing, and you called me hyperbolic and illegitimate because I referred to Steve Bannon talking about his confidence in war with China and Trump repeatedly agitating both them and Iran and his increasing desire to ignore the judicial branch, which this very site calls him out on. Your head seems to be pretty deep in the sand.
Titor is a total meanie.
Be careful or he'll give you a wedgie at recess!
I'm tired of hysterical fools who are serving to render Trump completely scandal proof. While you're screaming about nuclear wars (and showing your complete ignorance of American nuclear policy) Trump is obliterating any chance of police reform and entrenching the imperial Presidency.
You're crying wolf, over and over and over again. And guess what? No one cares because of it. You are actively delegitimizing the ability to criticize Trump for what he's actually doing, not your dystopian fantasies. You don't fundamentally understand how completely destructive you are being to your own cause, and claim that anyone who isn't sufficiently hysterical to have their head buried in the sand.
And, to tie it into the whole 'alliance' idea, even if we wanted to, why the hell would be attach ourselves to people so self-destructive and out of touch with reality?
Explain to me why you object to school choice again?
I actually don't, as long as "school choice" means what it says. I have a hard time trusting someone who seems to focus most of her energy on religious schools and claims to want to "advance God's kingdom" through the system. If your position is that said quote is wrong or out of context, I hope you're right.
Cool. Vouchers for everyone then.
Two comments:
1. Libertarians are not "centrists". In fact, most libertarians disavow the "left-right" political spectrum outright, even if their occasionally refer to it in public discourse in order to use shared language.
2. Most of the Reason commentariat are not libertarians.

Also, damn server squirrels.
Agree! Since Trump has been in power this site has done some excellent work, acting as an articulate alternative to the alt-talkshow-biblethumper Right AND the establishment "Left". But when I see what you so accurately describe as the tribalism displayed by some of the population here, I have to wonder who's really behind it.
At the risk of being a stalker I looked up Kumail Nanjiani's bio. He attended Karachi Grammar School, which is a religious (Anglican) school, and he attended Grinnell College, a private college. Why does he want to deny others the opportunities that he has had?
Because he now knows better after all that education?
Excellent. Abolish communist core or better yet abolish the Dept of Edukashun.
How many "children" have been killed already in these "gun free" gang infested, government indoctrination centers? Double the money spent in the last thirty years, and half the success.
Al Capone would have been a change for the better.
The pants shitting on facebook is going to be particularly hilarious today.
If the communists now in charge of the democratic party has wanted rational people in the cabinet, they could have offered to stop shooting kids over marijuana, and stop police from engaging in mugging and holdups for civil asset forfeiture pelf and boodle, perhaps even offered to repeal the communist manifesto income tax. Most importantly, they would not have advocated totalitarian econazi laws to send men with guns to make electric power illegal!
Hahahahahahaha! Eat National Socialism, idiots!
Pelf and boodle? I like that.

"Fund left-wing causes"? What about funding schools that teach kids that Jesus had a pet dinosaur with taxpayers' money? Can "left-wing" taxpayers opt out?
I have always supported you and later so that's what I always do, good luck.

I understand the idea behind school choice, but because of the stakes involved in the education of future generations, I'd much rather see true education reform and significant investments in public education. The government has largely abandoned education for a good while. I have never been a fan of unions, and agree that they have far too much power and are more motivated by protecting teachers, good or bad, and that's something that never should have been allowed.
Even if school choice were something that could work, Betsy DeVos is still wholly unqualified to lead the effort. No matter how good an idea might be, it's more important to fund the right people with the experience and qualifications to lead the effort. DeVos, like many of Trump's other cabinet appointees, will undoubtedly result in more damage than anything else, and many students will suffer because of it.
What I'm against is the credibility given to faith-based schools, that further the idea of religion over science, which is not education, it's propaganda that just further empowers ignorance. Government funds should not be used to indoctrinate children in an ideology that rejects science, history, facts, and common sense.
We already make significant investments in public schools, pouring more money into a leaky failboat isn't going to fix it. It's just going to incentivize the teacher's unions to keep doing what they're doing, which is nothing.
If you seriously think they've "largely abandoned" education then you have largely abandoned reality. There is this thing called Common Core which they have rammed down our throats not too long ago, you may have heard of it.
Why is she "wholly unqualified" to lead? Because she'd not an indoctrinated product of the system that failed?
As somebody who has seen the inside of public, private, and parochial schools, I assure you we got the same focus on science and math as everybody else. The main difference is that it's taught by people who can be fired if they suck at teaching, to the children of parents who can take their kids and money elsewhere if they're unsatisfied.
Government funds should not be used to "indoctrinate children in an ideology that rejects science, history, facts, and common sense" like Statism. Unfortunately that's the only ideology on the menu in government schools. If you use your own money to send your kids somewhere else, then the state still uses your share of the education budget to do it to other kids.
Private schools are not perfect, any business can give poor service to some of the people some of the time. But the current system is not only inefficient, but immoral and divisive. It needs to go.
