President Donald Trump's big actions today: Withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership (which was never approved by Congress anyhow); reinstituting a federal ban on funding clinics that provide abortions outside the United States; and freezing the hire of new federal employees (with exceptions for "military, public safety, and public health").

  • Which day does Trump want to make the National Day of Patriotic Devotion? Guess before clicking here.
  • The Supreme Court will not be hear a case over the constitutionality of Texas' voter ID law, but it could later on as it passes through lower courts.
  • The Supreme Court also declined to hear a case challenging a Utah law against polygamous cohabitation brought by the stars of reality show Sister Wives.
  • The Department of Defense is rejecting a report by Russian-owned media that Russia and the United States had cooperated on a strike against the Islamic State in Syria.
  • Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) will support Trump's pick of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state, despite his previously declared reservations.
  • An Australian man accused of driving his car into a crowd of people, killing five, apparently did so after stabbing his own brother in the face after the brother came out of the closet as gay.

President Donald Trump's big actions today...

    Yuge?

    1. bacon-magic   8 years ago

Let's do the time warp again...yugely.

    2. bacon-magic   8 years ago

I oughta get first for using blockquotes...life isn't fair! *stamps foot like a petulant crybaby progressive

      1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Blockquotes are for when you quote something from another page. Do I have to come up with all the rules?

        1. bacon-magic   8 years ago

          Yes, yes you did/do/will.

          1. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   8 years ago

Do I have to come up with all the rules?

            Absolutely not!

            Tonio is the (self-appointed) rule-maker.

Which is really libertarian of him.

    3. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

      Hello.

Trump can't waste a second. Undoing Obama's legacy is gonna take time!

      1. DEG   8 years ago

        Hello.

Hell, Obama couldn't undo Bush's legacy. He had eight years and people still blamed shit on Bush.

        1. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   8 years ago

Hell, Obama couldn'tdidn't wanna undo Bush's legacy. Because He had eight years and people still blamed shit on Bush.

          1. DEG   8 years ago

You are correct. Maybe I should have had a drink before posting.

          2. DOOMco   8 years ago

  2. bacon-magic   8 years ago

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) will support Trump's pick of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state, despite his previously declared reservations.

    Little Marco.

    1. Libertymike   8 years ago

Regarding his hands? They could be bigger depending upon the size of quid paid by Trump for Rubio's quo.

  3. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Which day does Trump want to make the National Day of Patriotic Devotion?

    11/9? Never forget.

"The Supreme Court will not be hear a case over the constitutionality of Texas' voter ID law, but it could later on as it passes through lower courts."

I agree. I shouldn't have to show an ID to buy a gun.

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   8 years ago

      It's racism, straight up.

    2. FreeToFear   8 years ago

That's not fair... for one of those you're acquiring tools of violence to use against your enemies... in the other you're just buying a gun

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Everyone, please note that there are now several different AmSoc posters. If you look carefully you will note that what appears to be the "ell" in "socialist" in the comment below is actually an uppercase "eye." Those two letters look the same in this dumb typeface. Thanks to whoever noticed this originally.

Also, there are additional "AmSoc" commenters using name variants with capital letters and underscores. I'm personally ignoring them all.

    1. Tonio   8 years ago

      american sociaIist|1.20.17 @ 4:34PM|#

      Guys,

As you have been seeing today?.i have a confession to make (some have already deduced this at times). I am a pure troll, i was just having fun essentially parodying socialism and tweaking you.

I had a rather abrupt conversion to not troll anymore. I found out my wife is expecting and it really puts things into perspective to be more serious. i do enjoy reading most of the commenters sans that clown tony (who i think is actually like me). I admit at times i was jealous he was getting attention lol.

I am not a socialist at all. I hate parasites and that ideology murders people to form a utopia. I support free markets and limited government. It should have gave it away that i 1) own a computer 2) know how to operate it because that requires WORK.

So just wanted to say i will sane up (for a lack of a better term) from now on. The baby is the only thing that can parasite off me with my permission

      cheers

      amsoc

ps. now i played a character for so long, i may revert but just ignore going forward if causing a scene TIA

      1. bacon-magic   8 years ago

I'm pretty sure it's FreeSociety/Eddie. He needs to go away, along with Amsoc, I'm tiring of both of them and getting closer to blocking or stabbing them.

        1. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

          Why would Eddie do that?

        2. Tonio   8 years ago

I would have thought better of Eddie.

          1. Playa Manhattan.   8 years ago

            Lies make baby Jesus cry.

          2. John Titor   8 years ago

Doesn't fit Eddie's MO. Eddie's dad jokes and insulting you to your face. The fake amsoc doesn't write in any way similar to Eddie either.

            1. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

Yeh, I'm thinking more along those lines. Doesn't make sense.

        3. Sumio Mondo, Jr.   8 years ago

          I don't think it's either one.

          1. Hyperion   8 years ago

Maybe not, but I think that the 'new' troll who appeared today, California Socialist, might be shreek's 3rd sock. Not sure yet, just something he replied to me with.

            1. CZmacure   8 years ago

That's Tulpa. And so are you.

        4. John Titor   8 years ago

Wait, you mean Free Society or Eddie right? Because if they're the same person you just blew my tiny little mind.

          1. bacon-magic   8 years ago

I'm still the noob here, I thought I saw you guys referring to FreeSociety as Eddie. If I'm wrong, sorry. Whoever is posting on the AmSock account it is someone who is religious.

            1. straffinrun   8 years ago

FS as Amsoc? Why would you think that?

              1. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

Why are you pretending to be straffinrun??

                /looks around.

              4. Jimbo   8 years ago

Zeb: Shit, I didn't know The Fusionist had to many different names. He's acting like a lefty/liberal/democrat/progressive!

                Hey, Fusionist, I kid!

            3. Tonio   8 years ago

Eddie is The Fusionist. He has switched handles several times, but his original (and longest-duration?) handle was "Eduard van Haalen" (spelling may be off, but whatevs). He'll always be my little Eddie.

              1. Playa Manhattan.   8 years ago

He has never tried to hide any of his handles.

                1. Libertymike   8 years ago

I'm pretty sure it's FreeSociety/Eddie. He needs to go away, along with Amsoc, I'm tiring of both of them and getting closer to blocking or stabbing them.

Woh, what'd I do to you? I don't recall ever arguing with you on anything. In fact I see us agreeing more often than not. You think I'm Eddie too? As in the poster using the handle 'Notorious GKC'? This is all so interesting.

          1. bacon-magic   8 years ago

            Nothing FS,
I'm not attacking you, yes we do agree more than not. The AmSock acct just had some religious comments that sounded like you.

            1. Free Society   8 years ago

Ha ha okay. I'm a sort of agnostic atheist for the record. My religious commentary is usually limited to disparaging Islam and it's practitioners.

              1. bacon-magic   8 years ago

I know, got your F name confused with the Fusionist. My bad.

                1. Free Society   8 years ago

So we all look alike to you? I can't even.

"Notorious GKC" is so 2013; Eddie has been "The Fusionist" for a while. See above for more info.

            1. Free Society   8 years ago

I think that switch happened late 2015.

                  2. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   8 years ago

That wasn't much of a euphemism, it sounded more like an out-n-out threat of sexual assault.

Now jesse, don't start ewwwwing like a teenage girl.

Your AddictionMyth impression needs work. And while you're practicing it, for the love of freedom kill Hitler. I've seen the juice-hating bastard posting around here far too often.

          Your AddictionMyth impression needs work.

Good god, man! I have nothing to do with the shriek/addiction myth/dajal trolling complex. OK, I occasionally remonstrate with people for interacting with it (assuming that they are all emissions from the same shambolic, non-sentient mess of neurons that is shriek).

I blocked them long ago, and I encourage all right-minded people to do the same...

          1. Col. Chestbridge   8 years ago

That's probably the sane approach, but I'm just an eagle-headed colonel, so I must walk a different path. AM frequently responds to troll-feeders with some variation of "g00d for yoUUuu!!1!111".

    3. Sumio Mondo, Jr.   8 years ago

I'm starting to suspect that Domestic Dissident might be the poster Mike M. under a different sock, but it sure is hard to tell.

Let's not start pulling at the thread of who is posting under which names and just enjoy the healthy debate of ideas people sometimes have with themselves.

        1. Ska   8 years ago

          Too easy for a euphemism.

        2. Not a True MJG   8 years ago

          You'd like that, wouldn't you?

        3. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   8 years ago

          ^^Thanks Tulpa.

Wait a sec... what's Tulpa, chopped liver?

      1. Playa Manhattan.   8 years ago

He's into throwing pets into the woodchopper at the moment.

        1. bacon-magic   8 years ago

Since I'm really confused...ya'll refer to Tulpa a lot. Is Woodchip your pets his only account and I'm assuming he is just a troll like Tony, Amsoc, Shreek, etc.?

          1. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

Chip Your Pets is the lastest Tulpa name. There is also Sam Haysom or something like that.

          2. Pat (PM)   8 years ago

Just in sockpuppet accounts that he's accidentally exposed because he's too retarded to properly handle-hop, Tulpa accounts for at least 1/3 of the registered accounts at Reason.

Shreek is also operating like half a dozen these days.

            1. Hyperion   8 years ago

The Tulpa I used to know who used that actual handle is easy to identify because he gets angry and loses his shit. He's one of the worst trolls ever, along with Botard and Cytotoxic. I think that AmSoc has taken the worst troll crown now of the ones who are left. Shreek has 2 known socks, AddictionMyth and dajjal. There's also Hihn and there used to be someone named Mary Stack who apparently had an army of socks. I'm not really sure any of these new trolls are actually Tulpa, he was pretty hateful.

              1. Sumio Mondo, Jr.   8 years ago

I'm like 85% sure chemjeff is Cytotoxic.

After the Obergfell decision and people commenting "Love wins", I remarked that I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people were supporting plural marriage. Needless to say people didn't respond well. They responded even worse when I argued that gay marriage is more acceptable because society (thankfully) sees gays as less icky, but we still don't find plural marriage acceptable because it's practiced by those icky fundamentalist Mormons.

  13. Pan Zagloba   8 years ago

In its new campaign to make Neil MacDonald look good less idiotic, Canada's Beloved State Broadcaster has just the thing:

Let us hope for a Donald Trump disaster

When Trump attacks, in personal and visceral terms, the head of the CIA, he sends a signal to all in the new administration that he will accept no scrutiny of unapproved matters. When he threatens to blacklist media organizations deemed unsupportive, he tramples upon a vital instrument of public accountability. And when he waves off inquiry into his campaign's ties with Russia while signaling that he may soon drop sanctions, it provokes obvious questions of conflict. Questions that he clearly prefers remain unexplored.
    ...
The harsh Darwinistic reality is this: if Trump's success transfers from politics to governing, his dark and guttural ways will become entrenched and ubiquitous. Because when standards fall, they rarely rise again ? especially not when they are proven to work.

America ? and Canada ? will carry on just fine if Trump fails. We might not be able to say the same if he succeeds. So let's hope hard for Trump to be a disaster. Not out of pique. But out of pronounced self-interest and concern for the future.

FB is afire with bitching about the Womens March. I haven't seen this much derp since right before the election. It basically boils down to, "My political rally is named for women, so if you don't support my march you don't support women." (Isn't there a logical fallacy about this?) No mention that there are other ways to support rights for women other than sucking Democrat cock. This really is going to be a difficult 4 years.

Demographia's most expensive and cheapest housing markets

They may be in opposite corners of the globe, but Hong Kong, Sydney and Vancouver have one thing in common.
They're the top three most unaffordable housing markets in the world, according to the 13th Annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey: 2017, published today.

Hong Kong has topped the list for the past seven years -- since its first appearance in the survey.

The US dominates the cheap end of the markets reviewed, though I'm not sure anyone would want to live in some of those areas:

World's 10 most affordable housing markets in 2017
    1. Racine, Wisconsin, US
    2. Bay City, Michigan, US
    3. Decatur, Illinois, US

    Sierra Nevada beer recall

The company said an inspection of its brewery in Mills River, North Carolina, "detected a very limited number of bottles with a flaw that may cause a small piece of glass to break off and possibly fall into the bottle, creating a risk for injury."

The recall applies to beer sold from Maine to Florida and across the Midwest, as far west as Texas and South Dakota.

The brewer named eight brands at risk for chipped glass: the flagship brand Pale Ale, Beer Camp Golden IPA, Sidecar Orange Pale Ale, Torpedo Extra IPA, Tropical Torpedo, Nooner, Hop Hunter and Otra Vez.

"The Supreme Court also declined to hear a case challenging a Utah law against polygamous cohabitation brought by the stars of reality show Sister Wives."

The hypocrisy from the so-called 'Love Wins' crowd in not defending the claims of polygamists is deafening. The polygamists literally have a real constitutional question, because polygamy laws were passed specifically to target Mormons (Utah was refused entry into the union until they passed an anti-polygamy law). But, as the left-wing reform party candidate, Gary Johnson, said "religion is a black hole" and totally not hip, so no need to defend them.

South African company making GT40 replicas

Cape Advanced Vehicles is building replicas of the iconic Ford GT40 using the same body molds that were used to produce the original version of the legendary track car.

Production started in 1999, and the replicas quickly became a hit with "car nuts" around the world, according to CAV CEO Jordi Reddy.

    Later in the article:

CAV's GT40 is offered with a modern Ford V8 engine, but some prefer to buy customized engines in their home market.

With only eight people in its workshop, the automaker exports 15 cars a year. But it recently doubled its production capacity to meet keep up with growing demand.

CAV exports to the United States, Canada, Europe, Britain, Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

Price tag between $100K and $130K.

They put Spicer's "First Press Conference" on the office tv's.

this is how wapo characterized it =

Sean Spicer's defense of himself and explanation of Donald Trump's sensitivity, annotated -

All i could think was, "i'm impressed they avoided Hitler references"

there was a lot of impassioned commentary from Spicer, effectively saying, "you guys are completely full of shit, and we're not going to take it lying down"

it hinged mainly around the [ridiculously stupid] contradictions about the size of the crowd @ the inauguration.

Basically, the admin wanted to be able to cite "record #s" (which if you allow for TV viewers and online and total #s in DC for the events (including protestors)) was probably true.... but the media wanted to spin a tale of, "LAME INAUGURAL, AND HALF OF THEM HATE HIM ANYWAY"

Spicer hinged on this "2 different sides" thing and basically said, "you people basically will take the opposite view no matter what we do", and that there needs to be some middle ground

The media concluded that this means, "OVERSENSITIVE TRUMP STILL IN DENIAL ABOUT LAME ASS INAUGURATION"

    Japan's first passenger jet delayed

    Warning: auto-play video

Japan's first ever homegrown commercial jetliner is facing yet another big delay.

Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. said Monday that it now doesn't expect to deliver the first plane until mid-2020. That's two years later than the previous schedule and the fifth time in less than eight years that the company has pushed back delivery plans for its Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ).

The new delay means the initial customer for the plane, Japan's All Nippon Airways (ALNPY), will receive its first delivery seven years later than originally planned.

Mitsubishi said the latest setback "is due to revisions of certain systems and electrical configurations on the aircraft" to meet certification requirements for regulatory approvals.

"Revisions of certain systems"? Taking the armor off? No self-sealing fuel tanks?

While it is absolutely a dick move, Congress should never have allocated the funds in the first place. I realize that passing massive bills without reading them is cool and all nowadays, but FFS at least get your interns to read the damn things.

They had to write an omnibus blank check to the executive department or else every village and town in America would have been without teachers, police, firefighters and Social Security checks.

      1. Pat (PM)   8 years ago

So it's a roundabout broken window parable?

  41. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

Guys, I found the hated American Socialist person/sock creator: At home with a 'hermit': Cricket-loving Bollywood enthusiast has been collecting data on snow from his home in a near-abandoned town for 40 years 'just to pass the time' - and yes, he does get a bit lonely sometimes

Barr has been living alone in Gothic since the fall of 1973 when he escaped the crowded city life of Trenton, New Jersey.

When Billy gets home from work he does chores while there's still daylight, checks the weather again and eats dinner, which consists of frozen or instant meals, pasta or a fresh salad from his greenhouse garden. Just no meat.

'It's just my own preference. I don't care if other people [eat meat],' he says.

After dinner he reads, knits himself mittens because he's constantly wearing them out and he's in bed by 10.30pm. But before he goes to sleep, he watches a movie in his movie room.

'It's the one thing I will not pass up,' he says, confessing that he watches 'mostly fluff'.

    1. Crusty Juggler   8 years ago

'I really like Bollywood movies,' he says. 'I have a lot of movies, but I have no horror and no violence. I do have dramas and some action comedies - action movies that are more in the comedy vein - and a lot of old movies. I have a bunch of silent movies, movies from the 30s and 40s. Yeah, a lot.'

His two favorite movies are The Princess Bride from 1987 and Om Shanti Om from 2007.

      His other love? Cricket.

Billy discovered the sport because it was always mentioned in his Bollywood movies but he didn't know what they were talking about.

    2. Pan Zagloba   8 years ago

Aw, come on. The guy looks like he's fundamentally a decent person. It's kinda sweet article, really.

I love the part on how he became the accountant for the lab - he knew the records, he could do the math, BAM - he's been working there for 30 years.

  45. GILMORE?   8 years ago

    Interesting

US Designates Election Infrastructure as "Critical"

Haven't read much about this, but my first impression is that its a federal power grab.

the story characterizes it as "federal help" = but with funding, comes control

States control elections. under the constitution, the Federal gov really has little/no say in how things are done. it seems like this is some backdoor attempt to influence process by tying funding to "doing it the way we want".

    1. kbolino   8 years ago

Very few people genuinely seem to understand that the popular vote in the Presidential election process is not a national election. It is 50 separate state elections which all conclude at the same time. The national election is held when the electors cast their votes.

      1. grrizzly   8 years ago

Too bad that recently the Democrats haven't won the Presidential election while losing the popular vote. Then the public would have been thoroughly educated on this issue.

    2. one true athena   8 years ago

This reads to me like the Obama Administration doing some last-minute plumping of the "Russia hacked the election" narrative.

And a federal power grab, too, of course.

Federal Govt Tries to Get Judge To Prevent Microsoft from Telling Customers When the Gov is Stealing Their Data

curious what MS data the feds want most of the time. Aside from Hotmail content. Outlook backdoors? are there OS-related things that they'd track? (perhaps mobile devices, but who the hell uses the MS phone? never even seen one of those)

    1. kbolino   8 years ago

      Aside from Hotmail content.

I think you're burying the most important part. The Feds are no doubt going after data "in the cloud" which includes email (Hotmail/Outlook Live), files (OneDrive), and passwords (Windows sync).

      1. kbolino   8 years ago

Note that these things are almost "enabled by default" in Windows 8/10 since you are strongly pushed into creating a Microsoft account and linking it to your Windows login (although you can opt out). Also, unless you go through the onerous steps of disabling Cortana, anything you type into the start menu search bar will also be sent to Microsoft, regardless of whether you opted out of linking your Microsoft account with your Windows login.

          Windows 10: we own you.

          1. kbolino   8 years ago

My greatest Windows 10 annoyance is that they basically make it impossible to control Windows updates. I have a laptop that I use infrequently. When I try to use it, the CPU fan goes into overdrive for 30 minutes while it catches up with a month or two worth of updates. I don't mind taking the time to get and install the updates, but it should be up to my discretion since it's my goddamn computer.

            1. DOOMco   8 years ago

yup. My roommates desktop ones do this less now, but mine still likes to turn on by itself in the middle of the night to run updates. It's nice coming home from skiing on sunday night to my computer being on.

the only way to fix (maybe) is to totally reinstall, and then make sure you check/uncheck all the right things. even then, you don't have full control.

              1. Pat (PM)   8 years ago

You're probably hibernating or suspending rather than shutting down and/or powering off. Change your power settings. You can do it graphically through the control panel menu, or type powercfg/h off in an elevated command prompt. When the machine is actually shut down the OS can't power cycle it.

                1. DOOMco   8 years ago

We have all tried every solution windows and reddit has given us. There are a bunch of things that will let it boot up, all are turned off. It does it less than it used to. From what we could tell, it's one setting that is selected at install, and is now not able to be changed unless I completely reinstall.

Any reason why you're still using Windows? Gaming is about the only thing keeping me there, other than laziness. Was sort of hoping SteamOS would take off more than it did.

              1. kbolino   8 years ago

Any reason why you're still using Windows?

                Office + Gaming + Drivers

I like OpenOffice or LibreOffice or whatever it's called now in its own right but the compatibility is still hit or miss with Office files (I'm sure Microsoft has no small share of the blame).

Gaming has gotten better, especially on the indie front. But the big-name titles are still Windows-only or Windows+Mac at most.

The driver situation ranges anywhere from "as good as Windows" (if you're lucky) to "you need to sacrifice your firstborn son to obtain the firmware" (hooray wireless cards) to "you don't need all those features, right?" to "we don't need no stinkin' drivers".

For everyone who told me to take up a project before I get a new job, thanks. Learning Spanish (DuoLingo) now, refreshing Latin as well. Programming is taking 4-8 hours of my day. I
I added a new fuse box to my truck today. Cleaned up a bunch of the wiring that was handling my fog and back up lights.

    Avalanche buries cars, selfies posted.

The slide occurred on the main road between I-80 and Lake Tahoe. It's been 5-10 years since snow like this. The last wave of the recent sierra storm dumped up to two feet in the last 24 hours bringing the most recent 5-day totals to around 100". I went skiing on Saturday. It was deep. We're going to dry out the next 10 days, which is nice. Hopefully we get more.

Donna Hylton, speaker at the Women's March in DC, killed and tortured a man

Reddit, but the source appears legit.

So I just found out about Donna Hylton who was invited to speak for women's rights at the march this weekend in DC. Apparently, she introduced herself and started by saying she had completed a prison sentence, but what wasn't covered was that she took part in torturing a man for 15-20 days and eventually killed him. [...]

Oh, and when Donna was interviewed about the crime, the interviewer said, "I couldn't believe this girl who was so intelligent and nice-looking could be so unemotional about what she was telling me she and her friends had done. They'd squeezed the victim's testicles with a pair of pliers, beat him, burned him."

    1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Holy Fuck do I hate murders. And torturers are even worse. May hell exist so that this "woman" can burn for all time.
