Stockholm officials say the city's "gender equal" snow-clearing rules are not responsible for major roads remaining blocked and buses having to be canceled after a recent snowfall. The rules call for sidewalks and bicycle lanes to be given priority over roads because women are more likely to bike or walk than men. But officials say they don't believe those rules were even followed.

Oldish news. The big storm that tested the gender-neutral system was over two weeks ago. Anyway, was this bad luck or the result of magical thinking? The twp possibilities are not exclusive, but the old system appeared to have worked under previous extreme conditions. I could be wrong, and this is all speculation, but I think there must have been some statistical trickery that went into that statement.

They might have just compared how many driver's licenses were held by men and women and assumed that if men hold more licenses, there are more male drivers.

If they did in fact do some gender analysis of drivers actually on the road, they probably counted people who are driving as a job, like truck drivers and cab drivers, who are overwhelmingly male.

As a male biker, I'm mildly surprised by this law. In my city, they tend to plow the snow off the roads and all over the sidewalks, meaning you can't walk or bike unless you do it in the middle of the road, fighting traffic. Logically, I realize very few people of EITHER gender walk or bike, so it makes sense that roads get the priority. I just don't get why they have to dump it on the sidewalks.
