5 Terrible Responses to Fidel Castro's Death From World Leaders
Politicians and tyrants alike heap praise on the despot who ruled over an island prison nation.

Upon the death of long-time Cuban dictator (retired) Fidel Castro, democratically elected politicians and brutal tyrants alike have come together to offer heartfelt tributes of the deceased.
Though President-elect Donald Trump has in the past praised vicious repression deployed by socialist dictators in Iraq and China, Trump's minimalist take on Twitter (Fidel Castro is dead!) and subsequent statement where he referred to Castro as a "brutal dictator" were welcome diversions from other political leaders' statements which have run the gamut between mealy-mouthed defenses of Castro's "complicated" legacy to slavish praise of his health care and pro-literacy initiatives.
Here are five of the worst reactions from international polticial leaders to Castro's death.
5. Ireland's President Michael Higgins
Higgins—nominally the head of state, though in Ireland's parliamentary system, the role is largely ceremonial— said in a statement:
Having survived some 600 attempts on his life, Fidel Castro, known to his peers in Cuba as 'El Comandante', became one of the longest serving Heads of State in the world, guiding the country through a remarkable process of social and political change, advocating a development path that was unique and determinedly independent.
First, as an authoritarian dictator (by definition, such people don't have "peers"), Higgins' praise of the length of Castro's reign is spectacularly dumb, as is his claim that a country which relied on the financial largess of the Soviet Union and later Venezuela (until the economic collapse of both socialist countries) was ever "determinedly independent."
Other jaw-droppers in Higgins' statement include "inequality and poverty are much less pronounced in Cuba than in surrounding nations" and that Castro would be remembered as a "giant among world leaders" who provided "freedom for his people."
One could argue that inequality is "less pronounced" in Cuba than in other Latin American countries, but only because the whole country is impoverished. However, even the "less inequality" defense goes out the window when you factor in the lavish lifestyles enjoyed by high-ranking Communist Party officials (such as Castro himself) compared to the rest of the long-suffering population forbidden to leave the country.
4. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker
In a statement that reads like it was produced by a bot employed by a crumbling bureaucracy, the president of the European Union's executive body wrote:
With the death of Fidel Castro, the world has lost a man who was a hero for many. He changed the course of his country and his influence reached far beyond. Fidel Castro remains one of the revolutionary figures of the 20th century. His legacy will be judged by history.
3. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei
The religious tyrant who rules over one of the worst human rights-offending countries on Earth tweeted his fond memories of shooting the breeze with another dictator who brutalized his own people.
I extensively talked with #FidelCastro in person, it is his personality to believe and rely on people. 5/27/92 pic.twitter.com/CtumcSgDEj

2. United Kingdom's Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn
The U.K.'s opposition party leader conceded Castro had "flaws"—though he wouldn't name them—but insisted in a statement that Castro was a "champion of social justice."
This must be news to the gays who were herded into labor camps following Castro's revolution, the poets and musicians imprisoned for "counter-revolutionary" expression, the exploited workers (who in the cruelest of ironies, are forbidden from unionizing), the innumerable Cubans who died trying to escape the "socialist paradise," and those who remain but are forbidden from accessing the outside world through the internet.
1. Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Everyone's favorite woke boyfriend released a statement calling Castro a "remarkable leader" who "served his people for almost half a century" as the country's "longest serving president"—a feat less impressive when you factor in the fact that Castro's one-party government never held a free election.
Trudeau conceded Castro was a "controversial figure," and then inexplicably decided to speak for both Castro's "supporters and detractors," who he says "recognized his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for 'el Comandante'."

Did Obama give his speech yet? It's not surprising that these people heap praise on a tyrant since power is the only thing they really care about.
A speech? No. He is holding out for the eulogy.
In the meantime, he left this for everybody.
Trump made this statement about the brutal dictator.
Note to self: Information from paragraph two probably does not need repeating right away.
Has Bernie made a statement yet regarding his elevation to next-in-line as Oldest Surviving Stalinist in the Western Hemisphere?
Looking forward to that one.
We should certainly be clear that only certain efforts of the left-wing libtards, here and abroad, should be condemned. Indeed, a supreme vision of ordered liberty must be defended at all costs, so as to make America great again; and that vision finds its highest expression in our ongoing efforts to suppress the Internet trolls and, if necessary, to construct a digital wall to keep the perverts and the provocateurs away from our children. Surely no one here would dare to defend the outrageous "First Amendment dissent" of a single, isolated judge in our nation's leading criminal "satire" case? See the documentation at:
https://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/
He's waiting for Ben & Jerry to join him.
"Oldest Surviving Stalinist in the Western Hemisphere?"
Um...Raoul.
Yes, Raoul is 10 years his senior.
Whatever else that administration is, I doubt anyone there will allow event a faint word of praise to go out to the public in Obama's name.
Do the dog whistles count?
That was almost exactly what I expected, as it was largely about Obama himself.
Obama is the next Castro. T-shirts and watches to follow.
And clown noses hopefully.
Bamaears.
Did Obama declare this a week of liberal leave for federal employees yet? Contractors hardest screwed.
I'm thankful for moments like these. Otherwise, you wouldn't know who the retards are.
In honor of Castro's death, I ordered a new iPad on Black Friday.
Burn in hell, motherfucker.
Since I can't go piss on Castro's grave, I'm declaring my bathroom a Fidel Castro memorial. It's the least I can do to to honor his accomplishments.
I'm building a small shrine to him in my back yard. Any politicians who want to pay their last respects to El Commadante can line up in front of my wood chipper shaped Castro monument.
Who wants to bet that his memorial is going to have armed guards?
Well, I can't have people using my bathroom 24/7.
Oh wait you mean the official memorial. I wouldn't be shocked if they stuffed him like Lenin and gave him a full honor guard.
My money is still on the Havana memorial being calmer that the Portland memorial.
"Since I can't go piss on Castro's grave"
?
Roundtrip flights from Miami-to-Havana starting at a 158 dollars!
$1000 a shot to piss on Castro,s grave would probably raise billions in hard currency just from Miami expats.
The WaPo and NYT have been remarkably restrained. When Thatcher died, they couldn't stop themselves pissing on her grave. W/ Castro, they seem to be trying not to overdo the praise for his great accomplishments. The term "political prisons" was even used.
The comments @ both, however, are exactly what you'd expect. there's a reliable 20-30% of deep derp
Even the comments at the Miami Herald are shit. Flooded by left coast elites who know better. Such is the internet.
I have friends whose parents were no shit tortured. Won't even wear seatbelts today, because that's what they were restrained with during electroshock.
Comments at the Herald: Fuck them for voting Trump.
From the other thread, ESPN has brought their version of predictible fawning to the discussion.
Wow, I can't think of a better tribute to a dead caribbean communist than buying from California communists a product made in China by Chinese communist slaves.
Well played.
I bought an Asus GTX 1070 STRIX OC tax free on Newegg. Take THAT commie bastards
Asus, made in Taiwan!
The other of the two Chinas.
The real one, the free one, the seat of the real Chinese government until Nixon screwed it up.
The real one, the free one, the seat of the real Chinese government until Nixon screwed it up.
Damn right.
Though I've heard at least one theory that the Kuomintang losing actually led to Japan rising, since they were in position to reap the benefits of capitalism while Mao was busy screwing up the Mainland such that it will take generations to fix. Basically, a mainland China that acted like Japan would've eaten Japan's lunch during the 80s and 90s.
Sexy. I'm rocking the 970 till graduation. Bought it a few months too early...
Not buying a new GPU until the 980ti comes out. Currently have 2 MSI 970 OCs running in SLI. I'll grab a 980ti (10G VRAM) as soon as released.
Shit fuck, I meant 1080ti.
"Burn in hell, motherfucker."
Playa says everything there is to say about Castro in four words.
For all those who have kind words, fuck you too. I will never get my chance to shoot Fidel in the face now, but maybe you can take his place.
Trump had a pretty great response to Fidel's death. If anything, he was still too kind.
Trump is just being presidential now that he's president-elect.
Fidel Castro is dead!
One of the best tweets ever.
The long form is actually good too.
The U.K.'s opposition party leader conceded Castro had "flaws"?though he wouldn't name them?but insisted in a statement that Castro was a "champion of social justice."
What a wonderful indictment of social justice as a concept.
That's almost verbatim what I was thinking.
Same here, tells you a lot about what is actual social justice.
No, it doesn't.
Yes, it does. Every regime that publicly announces 'social justice' as a major goal is a repressive tyranny. People in the United States who claim to be motivated by a desire for 'social justice' are fans and enablers of repressive tyrannies.
Why not take a look at people who claim to be "liberals" or supporters of "liberalism."
Check out This article in the Nation, which totally discredits liberalism for all time. /sarc
"? Why I Am A Liberal...
"? In the 1930s, a congressman named Maury Maverick defined liberalism in three words: "Freedom plus groceries." That's how I define it, too....
"? Consider, however, a corporation like Walnart, which had $447 billion in revenue this year, bigger than the gross domestic product of all but seventeen of the world's nations. But according to libertarianism and conservatism, Walmart can only produce liberty. It can never curtail it. Even if they fire you for no reason at all?and by law there's nothing you can do about it....
"? Let me quote what some conservatives said, once upon a time, about a certain bill pending before Congress: [critical comments cited]...
"The bill they're talking about was not Obamacare but Social Security. Which conservatives now say they're the best people to preserve. That's how they roll."
(The "Walnart" spelling was in the original article.)
"I am a liberal. I believe government is often the solution, not always the problem. I believe government should enact laws that protect rights, not strip them away. I'm for laws that expand equality, not restrict it. I believe in creating policies, not obstructing them.
"I'm for helping those in need, not telling them to fend for themselves. I support healthcare for all, not healthcare only for those who can afford it. I believe in nutrition assistance for the hungry, not tax breaks for the greedy. I believe in healthy school lunches for children, but not by changing the definition of pizza. I'm for Social Security and Medicare, and I know these programs would be self-sustaining if the FICA cap were removed and everyone paid into the system on 100% of their income."
"I'm Proud to be a liberal!"
This is too easy...
"Why I am a liberal
"...Did you know that the wealthy can prosper even with tax increases?..."
From John F. Kennedy:
"If by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties-someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal", then I'm proud to say I'm a 'Liberal.'"
What it means to be a liberal
"In today's world, the liberals are the idealists, the people who still believe, in spite of everything that has happened, that they can make the world a better place for everybody. Realistically, they know they're outnumbered, but it is a belief that shapes their lives.
"They believe that government is inherently good, that it can make the human condition better. They believe that we have some obligation to our fellow human beings. They believe in personal freedom, in freedom of speech and religion. They believe in the common good, the things people cannot do alone.
"The liberal thinks government can make the human condition better. The conservative thinks government always makes things worse. "
When you finish stroking yourself off.
Liberals have to couch their language with idealism, because at the end of the day, all they really believe in is robbing one group to provide largess to the other. And, since they choose the least efficient route to doing so, bureaucracy, what they mostly end up doing is enriching the State and giving it more levers of power over the increasingly dependent underclass.
As with many things regarding the welfare state, the state loses if these people ever make it on their own. It's hard to wield power over people who don't need you.
What happened to the commenters who say *they're* the *real* liberals and all those progressives *aren't* liberal?
Liberalism is dead. Its body having been usurped by Tom Ripley aka progressives.
"A coalition of liberals is indeed forming around [Elizabeth] Warren now ? an unapologetic and unreformed liberal ? and her fierce opposition to Wall Street chieftains and laissez-faire Democrats."
Not even Salon can help themselves.
Elizabeth Warren isn't a "liberal", not even in the JFK sense, she is somewhere between a progressive and a democratic socialist (well, at least I hope she's democratic, she's definitely a socialist).
Oh, but I fully support Elizabeth Warren running for the Democrats; just like Hillary, she'd go down in flames. Warren is less corrupt than Hillary; Warren's problem is that she is an ignorant, arrogant fool. Republican candidates would have a field day with her.
*Finally,* someone made a "don't call them liberals" comment.
Her most notable line of bullshit imo is tying minimum wage to productivity. Citing the 500% increase in productivity over the past 4-5 decades, she stated that the min wage should be ~$25 an hour. Either due to ignorance or intellectual dishonesty she leaves out the fact that virtually ALL of that 500% came from capital investments... ie having one person washing dishes using a Hobart rather than 5 people scrubbing with sponges.
she stated that the min wage should be ~$25 an hour
What a cheapskate!
They should always play the fight song by Itchy and Scratchy since she seems quite into fighting.
Warren is less corrupt than Hillary; Warren's problem is that she is an ignorant, arrogant fool. Republican candidates would have a field day with her.
Given how poorly they did against ignorant, arrogant fool Obama, I don't think so. Before you bring up Obama being special because he's only half white, keep in mind that Warren has an even stronger identity politics angle.
Of course she's democratic. As long as that's convenient language for the struggle.
Yes, they do think that. They just happen to be wrong.
However, "the liberal" certainly is right that the policies they advocate make their own condition better: US "liberalism" is simply greedy self-interest.
Quotes like this perfectly demonstrate the basic problem of liberalism: their belief that if you don't agree with their methods, you also don't agree with their goals. If your aren't in favor of the government helping the poor, you must be an evil monster who doesn't care about the poor.
That someone could agree that caring for the needy is important, while also believing that private charity is the best way to accomplish it, doesn't even make sense in their worldview.
The statement also made favorable comments about "national independence" - which Cuba under Castro didn't really have.
Would you say that the statement is an indictment of national independence as a concept?
Real social justice includes recognition that: "Respect for the human person entails respect for the rights that flow from his dignity as a creature. These rights are prior to society and must be recognized by it. They are the basis of the moral legitimacy of every authority: by flouting them, or refusing to recognize them in its positive legislation, a society undermines its own moral legitimacy."
Meanwhile, Bill Maher discredits libertarianism as a concept by calling himself a libertarian.
It is worse than that really. Wikipedia calls Abbie Hoffman a libertarian.
Jeff Bezos too.
[citation needed]
This ras really that hard? Really?
Part of a series on
Libertarian socialism
It was an attempt at wikihumor.
Ah, carry on then.
He also discredits the rationalism that most atheists represent by being a total cuckoo when it comes to medicine and vaccines.
"...the rationalism that most atheists represent..."
You have any real evidence for that characterization? Or is it just self congratulation?
At least purport we purport to it. I didn't claim to own it.
I'll try to clarify, since I wasn't attempting to impugn any particular belief system (I'm very pro-freedom of religion): As an atheist, all I've got to drive me is the idea of rationality. Anyone can be rational, but it's literally all I have to define my own belief system. My values of "good" and "bad" are built solely on what I can argue logically. It's actually scary as hell, so I don't pretend it makes me more virtuous than anyone else.
That's why when someone like Bill Maher, who is very loud and demonstrative about being an atheist, rants like a nut about how vaccines are a scam (or how, it becomes embarrassment by association. In fact, Bill Maher actively presents himself as more rational than religious people even though he laps up any quack theory about "alternative medicine," (Maher interviewed a doctor who claimed he had single-handedly eliminated HIV in a small country with alternative medicine, and didn't even bat an eye at this ridiculous claim), severely undermining his own arguments and making the rest of us atheists look bad.
What is the difference between an atheist and a believer in a religion?
Both profess belief in something nether can prove.
I would say that the Vatican talking about "moral legitimacy" is rather hypocritical, if not outright ridiculous.
If only someone else would say those things about the rights of the human person, someone pure, not an organization containing flawed and sinful human beings!
Let's reject the Catholic Church's support for human rights and wait for someone more righteous to come along and defend them.
Tha Pope's idea of human rights has no room for individual rights. I spit on the Pope's opinions on just about everything; if he doesn't support individual rights, he doesn't support human rights.
Wake me when the Pope starts defrocking pedophiles instead of sending them to new parishes to hide from the cops and victims.
He can start his path to redemption by confessing his sins of hating individual rights.
Re the abuse scandals, I think you're confusing Pope Francis with other prelates.
As to the Pope's Peronist background, in itself that's no more relevant than a Pope's Medici background, until it starts affecting his teaching role, and here the institutional restraints of the office (or, I would say, the Holy Spirit) stops him from shoving Peronism down the throats of the faithful.
If he's against human freedom, he will be accountable at the Last Judgment like anyone else.
But the Church didn't begin with Pope Francis and probably won't end with him.
Waffle waffle waffle. You ARE a good Catholic. Keep it up and you might have a shot at Pope some day.
I can't help but notice that you don't actually specifically rebut any point I make. You rely on John Stewart style smugness...just like a liberal!
One can only wonder why God would choose such a man to lead his church? Almost as if it isn't really God making the decisions...
And still nothing about why that definition of social justice is wrong...just shooting the messenger.
(I would say that this is a case of principals rather than principles, but I know the commentariat is too sophisticated for that)
No, past popes were far worse, like the ones that colluded with Hitler, that engaged in religious cleansing of France, that burned non-Christians at the stake, that started numerous wars, that supported slavery, and on and on. The reason the Catholic Church has largely stopped committing such atrocities is because civil society has stepped in and put a stop to it.
Hopefully, over the next few decades, we can reduce the Catholic Church to what it ought to be: a social club that sponsors informal get-togethers on weekends.
"colluded with Hitler"
The former chief Rabbi of Rome, Golda Meir, and the Jews who sheltered in convents and Church buildings during the Holocaust, must have been suffering from false consciousness.
And since you brought it up, Hitler wished the Catholic Church was simply a social club with no political influence.
"Hopefully, over the next few decades, we can reduce the Catholic Church to what it ought to be: a social club that sponsors informal get-togethers on weekends."
The anti-Catholic polemicist Paul Blanshard shared your wish.
From his 1949 book, American Freedom and Catholic Power -
"American Catholic judges, in spite of their official oaths to enforce all laws impartially, are directed by the hierarchy in official documents not to carry out, with Catholics or non-Catholics, the sterilization laws..."
Imagine the impudence!
"Hopefully, over the next few decades, we can reduce the Catholic Church to what it ought to be: a social club that sponsors informal get-togethers on weekends."
Yeah, that ain't gonna happen.
Sorry that you lost your ideological comrade Fidel Castro today; sounds like you and he shared similar asinine ideas on how to achieve utopia on earth. Both visions involve somehow eliminating those pesky "God-botherers" from interfering in The Perfect Human Government.
Good luck waiting for that perfect government to fix society for you.
"The reason the Catholic Church has largely stopped committing such atrocities is because civil society has stepped in and put a stop to it."
What actually happened was a divorce of the entities that tend to do this from the Catholic Church, thereby enabling the Church to become more civil.
Meanwhile those entities *still* go around shooting dogs, stealing treasure at gunpoint, breaking down doors and terrorizing the occupants, and even occasionally burning down buildings with children in them. And that's just in the United States, where we've tried to civilize these entities!
Meanwhile, in places like Cuba, Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and Communist China (just to identify a tiny few of the worst offenders), these have committed such atrocities as to make the Catholic Church in its heyday look like a well-run hospital in comparison.
Let's not forget the inhumane results of people enforcing of his supernatural beliefs, for example the horror that is "birth control" via illegal abortion in the Philippines. Because people aren't going to stop having sex, can't get reliable and inexpensive birth control, and can get inexpensive and dangerous abortion. How I love the pope and the Catholic church, force for only good.
Yeah, the Church should reconsider its support for abortion. /sarc
No, dipshit-with-reading-comprehension, it should reconsider its opposition to birth control.
*problems
I comprehend your point - I comprehend that it is dumb.
We keep hearing promises that flooding a country with condoms and pills will reduce the abortion rate...but it just never seems to work that way.
A trivial look at the wikipedia shows that, for example, "Contraceptive use among women in Sub-Saharan Africa has risen from about 5% in 1991 to about 30% in 2006." So your hypothesis is... what?
"Condoms don't actually prevent pregnancy and aren't used to do so" ?
"All pregnancies are wanted, so condoms don't prevent unwanted pregnancy" ?
"Catholic women in the Philippines consider abortion less immoral than birth control, and therefore choose to use it instead" ?
"All women who use condoms are sterile whores" ?
It's not my job to engage with whatever incoherent nonsense you throw up. Seriously go learn about abortion in the Philippines and tell me whether you think papist opposition to birth control increases or decreases the measure of evil on earth.
You'd have to familiarize yourself with the Church's distinction between legitimate and illegitimate forms of birth control, and with its opposition to extramarital sex whether involving birth control or not, before you can really engage this issue.
Until then you're just spewing Tourette's-style invective.
Yeah. I'd have to familiarize myself with all that, and then look at the behavior of actual Catholics in the general population and government of the Philippines.
The practical result is clear. Whether it is due to (somehow preventable via piety) sinful human fallibility or not, one really cannot argue that the result is women end up committing a mortal sin (abortion) to avoid a less serious sin (birth control). Which practice will harm them more?
Do you consider this reality a price worth paying for theological purity?
"women end up committing a mortal sin (abortion) to avoid a less serious sin (birth control)"
Stole a base there, I see. 🙂
Are you dense or just trolling?
The government doesn't let them get non-abortion birth control, but economic reality forces them to use abortion as birth control. The government is less able to prevent them from getting abortions than less dangerous/less sinful birth control. I've now made the same basic point like five times.
Seriously just watch the reality of the theology in practice.
Hmmm...so far I'm seeing:
1) The government shipping poor people from cities where they have jobs to public-housing in the country, where there are no jobs
2) Prolifers teaching poor Filipinos how to do contraception so they won't be tempted to do abortions. You might have mentioned that part, I guess it doesn't count since it's Natural Family Planning?
Now a sympathetic journalist talks to a Dr. in a lefty "women's health" organization, who "sidesteps" questions about whether the group refers women for abortions.
Now the Dr. fesses up - yes, she *did* refer for abortions.
Now look at these "unsafe" abortions!
Now let's confront the fascist mayor who doesn't think birth control is a solution to poverty!
To sum up: Women are having abortion because they're "devout Catholics!"
CZmacure, you *do* realize, don't you, that you talked about the evils of the Church's opposition to birth control and then linked to a video where *prolifers were teaching birth control to poor Filipinos so they wouldn't be tempted to abortion*?
(and this under Catholic auspices)
Unless you're going to defend the Borgia popes, you pretty much have to admit that there have been some seriously bad people who held that office. The infallibility doctrine does not apply to behavior or to personal opinions on issues beyond faith and morals. So you're not religiously obligated to defend the ignorant statist douchebag Pope Francis.
"you're not religiously obligated to defend the ignorant statist douchebag Pope Francis."
I wasn't aware that I was doing so.
In fact, I said this about Pope Francis:
"If he's against human freedom, he will be accountable at the Last Judgment like anyone else.
"But the Church didn't begin with Pope Francis and probably won't end with him."
"I wasn't aware that I was doing so."
The problem in a nutshell.
Wow, you seem really angry over the issue of birth control. Pesky unwanted human beings been getting you down?
I bet you'll miss Chairman Obama and his common sense progressive approach of forcing nuns to pay for human chemical sterilization and abortions. Cheer up, maybe President Trump will also be pro-death. Hope you feel better.
Self-aggrandizing and self-serving rhetoric doesn't amount to "support for human rights". As an institution, the Catholic Church has been responsible for keeping large parts of humanity in misery and bondage.
Note that my condemnation is of the Catholic Church as an organization, not its members. Many good people happen to have been born into Catholicism, but they are good despite the church, not because of it.
The West's tradition of human rights built on the great Catholic thinkers of old.
And if you want to see the effects of being enslaved by Catholicism, then ideally you should look at a country groaning under the Catholic yoke and then look at the same country after it shook the yoke off.
Consider France under its corrupt Gallican-Catholic regime - where the Church doesn't exactly look her best - and then look at the post-Christian regime set up after 1789.
I love how all the religious people of a country suddenly lose their faith because of changes in the official religion, in cases like this or when people want to deny Christian complicity with the Nazis.
"We must put an end once and for all to the Papist-Quaker babble about the sanctity of human life." - Leon Trotsky
Nice quote from a statehadi, in case anyone thought religions that don't call themselves religions are any less dangerous than the ones that do.
Ya know .... there's dictionary definitions of words and phrases, and there's real life definitions. Dictionaries serve two purposes: to document what reality was a few years back, and for control freak grammar nazis to prescribe and proscribe "proper" definitions to the masses. As always with control freaks, reason has nothing to do with their actions, only feelz and emoshunz and war boners.
Apparently everyone but you, and I do mean including the social justice warriors, understand a different concept of social justice, with proggies and everybody else differing only in whether it's useful for anything more than jokes.
The Vatican is run by an idiot who thinks individualism is bad, property is bad, technology is bad, capitalism is bad. No doubt he will tender his praise for Castro based solely on how Castro treated the Pope's henchmen, regardless of whether the henchmen or Castro treated people properly.
The definition of social justice which I gave is the definition which is binding on me and other Catholics. Since it depends on natural law and not the uniquely Christian revelation, it is also addressed to all people of good will, Catholic or not.
In other words, social justice is something with an objective existence.
"No doubt he will tender his praise for Castro based solely on how Castro treated the Pope's henchmen, regardless of whether the henchmen or Castro treated people properly."
Let's see...
"The Vatican's carefully crafted 9-line telegram avoided using words of support, going instead with strict formulas, hence showing closeness to those who are grieving but avoiding being seen as supportive of the Castro regime."
I see. You are depending on a subjective definition of objective, then.
Does liberalism have an objective existence?
So where was that "social justice" when the Catholic church expelled my family for having the wrong religion? Where was that "social justice" when the Catholic church helped make Hitler dictator of Germany?
That's the same pseudo-scientific bullshit we have to listen to from socialists, Marxists, and progressives. No, calling your fallacies and delusions "natural law" doesn't suddenly make them true or universally valid.
The definition of social justice which I gave is the definition which is binding on me and other Catholics.
Baloney. Not Scripture, not Magisterium, and certainly not the Tradition of the Church. So it can be taken or left.
The real problem with the RCC or any group with a related theology is the anti-libertarian, anti-"classical liberal" idea that some non-human being is the sovereign of the universe, and individuals are its mere property. Then there's the scam that some of us chattel are the special conduit for orders from massa. No Pope has yet to make an ex cathedra pronouncement that this economic system is a mortal sin, or that one is required, but Catholics would be required to obey any such proclamation, were it to be made in the proper form.
It's a good thing that the Founders believed in a God who created people and endowed them with inalienable rights - it's better than letting the dominant human group decide which humans have rights and which ones don't.
I happen to think people are endowed by their nature with inalienable rights. I don't need "Nature's ghod" to back that up. Sue me for being Aristotelian rather than Thomistic. Jefferson and Madison et al did decide - by omission - which humans had rights, and which didn't. We can thank them for writing founding documents with higher ideals embedded in them than the polities they lived in had yet to attain.
Over the last two centuries, the expanding definition of who a "person who has rights" is one of the great triumphs of the American Experiment. The Founders "built better than they knew."
If you rely on a ghod for your rights, when people stop believing in it, or start following a different version that doesn't support rights, we are all screwed.
So...basically like the situation today?
I won't depend on a "Noble Lie" for our system's legitimacy. Now, some political thinkers don't really believe in a deity, but support religion because it encourages the masses to be moral. Others do, and are tempted to impose, by means of the state, their beliefs, however attenuated, on the rest of us.
"As always with control freaks, reason has nothing to do with their actions, only feelz and emoshunz and war boners."
Yeah words don't need meaning, it's, all about emotion?
Jesus Christ you're stupid.
Politicians admire tyrannical monster: film at 11.
One of the things we might watch for is hypocrisy from progressives regarding Trump.
On one hand, Trump is an evil bastard for wanting to build a wall to keep people from coming in.
On the other hand, are progressives mourning the death of a man who killed his own people for trying to escape his borders?
Go to the other Castro thread. Follow Sevo's link. Read the comments. Have your vomit bucket ready.
Playa, don't know if you found it there, but there was one classic comment:
'Finally! A good communist!'
Run-of-the mill conservatives believe countries should let pretty much anyone leave, and only a select few enter.
Since they are racist, inbred hillbillies, they must be wrong, and the optimal border policy must then be to let almost anyone in, and almost no one out.

What the hell is a "European Commission"?
The executive of the European Union.
The European Union's CEO.
I don't think they're elected directly by the people, so calling him "President" wouldn't be right, and "Prime Minister" or "Premier" might suggest he was usurping the power of your petty little elected Prime Minister or Premier back in your provincial little capital.
The executive branch of the EU. Each member sends a "commissioner" from which a Commission President is appointed. After his or her appointment, the individual receives DNA hybridization from the Annukani.
+1 GMO label
5% of the sale. I prefer to work for Asians myself.
He was a great leader and an inspiration to us all.
Jill Stein approves this message.
I wonder if they'll give him a santero funeral?
Generally there's some irony or juxtaposition between your post and italicized tag line
I'm a lot more interested in the world leaders who denounce Castro that who praise the monster. Where are these leaders?
In the US I'd like to hear Rand Paul or Mike Lee or Justin Amash or Thomas Massie on the subject of Castro.
Will no one denounce a mass murderer?
Ted Cruz put out a statement on a twitter earlier today. Understandably, he isn't a fan of Castro.
I know that he is reviled in these parts, but Donald Trump did denounce Castro today.
If there is one good thing about Trump it's that he just says whatever, he doesn't give a fuck and it's tormenting the PC left. Which is some epic lulz.
The Vietnam Veteran Secretary of State John F. Kerry had a gem. Worth looking up.
I can agree with that. It's why those fucks should never get power in our country.
He then added: "And I pledge to adopt all these tactics, and much, much worse. We gotta do it folks. Do we have a country or don't we?"
Retardation: A Celebration
So, I wonder what you think it says about you that after all your efforts, you've lowered yourself to fabricating statements.
I wonder what it says about you that are obsessed with my efforts. (Which I might add have been successful.)
Yes, you're successfully fabricating statements.
Not only that, but attributing most of them to Jill Stein.
"(Which I might add have been successful.)"
Jill Stein lost.
He's pissed that I keep reminding him of his stupid gold prediction. Hence, the "obsessed" comment.
He's been sitting around for months making up his 'Hillary is the best president ever' bullshit. So of course he has a sore ass now.
Holy shit.
^truth hurts
Not yet. Wisconsin recount is on!
If the fuckers trying to install Hillarynas President by nefarious means succeed, then screw them all.... it's civil war time...
It is already interesting. Stein, without a prayer of winning one electoral vote, somehow raises a few million from her fellow travelers.
Then the Clintonistas join in.
Who writes their scripts? This is like a bad TV show.
It's overreported by various media organizations for whom the election was golden ratings and pageclicks. The strategy is to pretend like the election isn't over and try to drive more traffic.
Soros is writing the script.
"I wonder what it says about you that are obsessed with my efforts."
Vermin infestations tend to get attention
Vermin Supreme has no cash for a recount.
Prime Minister Labrador wags his tail again. WTF is wrong with people. He was a mass murderer. How can anyone who claims to love liberty speak positively of this monster.
It is only a claim of loving liberty.
WaPo actually had a decent article.
I'm sure it had other stupid articles, but this one is worth sharing.
It's times like this that I wish I believed in an afterlife.
I'm not a world leader but can I take a shot at a eulogy...
"Whatever you may think of him at least he didn't turn the country into some Banana republic shithole whose only purpose was to make sure American corporations got their dollars on time. That, and he sat right under the armpit (90 miles from Florida and all) of the most powerful country in the world whose Presidents invaded several small third-world countries (including his own) and, all the while, managed to pretty much punch 10-out-of-11 of those mostly assholes in the nut sack every chance he got. You've got to at least give him a 5 out-of-10 for that."
Fuck Fidel, fuck his brother, and fuck you.
I love that stupid ass SJW's think they can portray America as the great Satan, then they try to rehab Castro by making comparisions.
"Bu bu but? he only did things that the most brutal regime in history did!!!! "
Have they gotten to "he only did it because of capitalism" yet? Some of that stuff is pure rock bottom gold.
Yeah it was a shithole police state full of starving people but at least there was no Walmart selling people jeans for $10. That's the real evil in this world.
There were starving people in Cuba? No, I don't think so unless you want to apply a standard that would include the United States.
Did you pay your bet yet?
"YOU WON'T see many cats prowling the twisting, unlit streets of old Havana these days. Strays or pets, most have fallen victim to a people living on the edge of starvation."
http://www.independent.co.uk/n.....17691.html
Fuck off, asswipe liar.
There was a website a while back, I wish I could find it now... But it was a guy from South America who visited Cuba and took a lot of pictures there. Trust me, it was not the charming paradise that lefty Americans have been making it out to be. It looked like a 3rd world hell hole. He even took pictures inside of their 'best in the world' healthcare facilities and the equipment was ancient and the conditions horrible.
Hey, if there were any healthcare available, it'd be free. Asswipe commie said so!
But I'm sure their NICUs are superior to the US. How else would they have a lower infant mortality rate?
If you visit, it's considered customary to leave your aspirin/other generic medication in the hotel room when you fly home. And tip in your home currency.
There were plenty of dogs and cats on the streets of Havana when I was there.
which number do you think is greater? A.) The number of people who have died of starvation in Cuba over the last 57 years or B.) The number of people who have died of lack of medical care from being uninsured in the United States in the last month? I honestly don't know the number. Do you?
It's one thing to be a liar. It's an entirely different thing to be so utterly fucking clueless that you think people will believe this babbling bullshit. You do realize that emergency rooms have to treat all patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay, right? I mean, it's only been like that for your entire, miserable, useless fucking life. Not to mention walk in clinics and other forms of medical care.
There was a pretty long list of places around here where you could go get healthcare based on a sliding income scale. Basically if you had no income, it was free. That was before Obamacare. No one in the USA was dying because of lack of healthcare insurance. That's a total myth perpetrated by the left.
I actually had one lefty tell me that 45 million people were dying a year in the USA because of no insurance. I said 'so more than 10% of the entire population is dying from no healthcare insurance? Where are all these dead bodies?'. She continued to insist that the number was accurate. This is how fucking dumb they really are.
Why do you hate the 45 millions who are dying in the streets every day ?
"B.) The number of people who have died of lack of medical care from being uninsured in the United States in the last month ?
Are you admitting that being covered by Obamacare insurance doesn't equate to having healthcare ?
No. He's just admitting that he's retarded.
Looking at the first page of Google results for "Cuba food shortages" reveal you to be both a liar and a moron.
How long before he pulls out propaganda or some capitalist plot to explain that one away?
Oh, come on, you know the answer to that: socialism is failing because capitalist pigs are unfairly denying socialist regimes access to capitalist markets!
Yes, yes, I know it is coming up someplace. Just when seems to be a surprise sometimes.
Come and tell that to the faces of my Cuban friends asshole.
My brother's grandparents-in-law booked it out of China to avoid Mao. Then they had to bail out of Cuba when Castro took it over. Their whole lives have been spent outrunning a tide of red before they got drowned, so their daughter (bro's MIL) wouldn't have to.
They'd probably smack the shit out of the Castro-fellators.
You do realize what a reprehensible person you are for making apologias for that man, right?
Jesus, I'm beginning to think Orwell was the only person to call himself a socialist who had a conscience.
But they cured cancer! Oh wait, that wasn't true either.
The continued survival of Cuba, much less Vietnam, was solely due to the humanity of the American people who had no stomach for tactical nuclear strikes upon Hanoi and Havana.
Mercy is a luxury borne from prosperity.
Ruminate upon that.
Well, in all fairness, nuking Cuba:
1. Wouldn't really have helped the Cuban people much
2. Would have resulted in fallout over Puerto Rico, Florida, and some other places.
I'm not saying it would have been a good idea, but the reason mud-hut dwelling jungle revolutionaries have succeeding in their insurgencies is because we've fought them with one hand tied behind out back.
Contrast the Soviet Union engaging in an almost 20 year genocide merely to support ideological allies in Afghanistan, to our response (billions of dollars spent and hundreds of lives lost building schools and canals for an ungrateful population) at actually having been attacked by them.
And why do we engage in such putatively self-defeating behavior? Basically because we can afford to do so.
OK. As much as I detest the imperialist tendency of American power, I will grant that we rebuild our enemies after we defeat them, rather than take all their stuff and enslave their people.
Right, and that's a fairly new development. In the days of the Indian Wars, Philippine War and subsequent occupation, etc., we were more than willing to take all their stuff and enslave/impress the population.
The US could've done to Cuba what Russia did to the Ukraine, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, eat all. That it didn't says more about the US than about Cuba.
Let's not polish the halo too much. The Platt Amendment made Cuba as much of a US satellite state as any of the Soviet satellites in Eastern Europe were.
Also, Teddy Roosevelt was a fraud, but my God, what a glorious fraud.
I would have called him an overweening asshole, but I'll take what I can get.
And the Cuban people probably wish to heaven that we had seized control and made them the xth state.
you've got to love people who think having your country invaded (North Vietnam) and having your country invaded and subject to a crippling blockade (Cuba) are acts of mercy. You don't think there were people willing to have a nuclear war over a couple of missiles in Cuba in JFKs cabinet? You vastly overestimate the man's commitment to peace. Thank God for all of us that he listened to people in his administration that were sane.
So, what happened to that 500 dollar gold you were predicting?
You're an idiot. And evil.
You got to love people who, having no response to your argument, mendaciously twist your words.
It's the navel-gazing rumination of a self-righteous moron, what do you expect? Amsoc's posts exist to reinforce his shitty little ego.
Of course he doesn't understand something like the distinction between American policy towards Cuba and "Cuba delenda est".
Not to mention that attributing the Vietnamese War's casus belli as an "invasion" of the north is Holocaust revisionist levels of scumbaggery.
A shame that Fidel Castro didn't listen to the people in his administration who advised him not to intervene in a conflict half-way around the world that left around half a million civilians dead.
You mean the war in which Fidel Castro defeated apartheid? You fucking racist.
And you claim to be libertarian?
Huh.
Evil and immoral socialist, sure. But not libertarian.
So, you're against the boycotting of South Africa then?
"I'm not a world leader but can I take a shot at a eulogy..."
Fuck off, asswipe. We already have a eulogy:
Finally! A good commie!
Pretty sure Obama is going to use different words.
Whatever you may think of him at least he didn't he did turn the country into some Banana republic communist dictatorship shithole whose only purpose was to make sure American corporations the Castro family got their dollars on time.
...managed to pretty much punch 10-out-of-11 of those mostly assholes 100% of his own people in the nut sack every chance he got. You've got to at least give him a 5 out-of-10 ticket straight to hell for that."
FIFY, asshole
"I'm going to scream shitty whataboutisms in a pathetic attempt at defending an authoritarian murderous piece of shit. No, I'm too stupid to understand what a logical fallacy is."
The american socialist is completely delusional, but his attempt at an eulogy brings something to mind:
At least Cuba isn't as poor as Haiti ... probably because Cuba never enjoyed the kind attentions of the Clinton Foundation like unfortunate Haiti. At least the Castros understood that 100000 barrels a day of nearly free oil from Chavez' Venezuela was worth more than anything the Clintons could do for them.
Nice company you keep - Eurotards, Iranian Theocrats and PM Zoolander.
Yes he just turned it into a banana dictatorship that makes sure he always got his peso on time. But whatevs socialism makes starvating and oppression worth it. Fuck off you whore.
This is what I say to Europeans who give George W. Bush shit:
"You know who was worse than Bush?"
Zing! Pow! Boom!
Sore loser?
Hypocrite, too. Remember the pants-shitting when Trump suggested the election was rigged?
Stein has already admitted that a change in the election status in any of these states is very unlikely because the margins are not close enough. And the retards keep giving her money anyway. Why would these states even allow a recount under these circumstances?
The laws in those states allow a recount if it is paid for by the requestor.
They probably should tighten up the language so that somebody who loses by 48 percentage points can't request a recount (as a proxy for the second place finisher), but good luck with that, especially in Democrat-run PA.
What if a recount changes the status of whether a party gets automatic ballot access?
Meh. If the greens are leaching money from the democrats in a way that makes voting for them again more palatable to lefties (instead of being blamed for the election being lost), I see no reason to want to stop them.
Remember the pants-shitting about photo ID?
She saw all the cash that Stein was raising, and wanted in on the action.
Got to.
'Donations' to the foundation have become almost as common as an honest post from the asswipe commie.
I love that Jill Stein is the one pushing for this.
"I mean, she very likely will get us into WW3, but by all means we have to keep Trump from being president."
"Tyrants and politicians alike..."
False dichotomy?
Of course Canada loves Castro. They made a ton of money off Cuban sex tourism. Ah, the good old days.
So, what happened to the gold price shriek?
How's that prediction looking?
Ahahahahahahahahhah
The anarcho-Trumpkins issued a statement today about the passing of Fidel Castro: "He was a terrible, terrible person. Just terrible. And nasty. Firing squads and prison camps and much, much worse. We disavow. Alright? We disavow and condemn."
^this guy predicted 500 dollar gold too lololololololl
He doesn't pay bets either and then lies about it.
I know right???
So, what happened to the 500 dollar gold you were predicting guy?
And why don't you just pay your bet?
You are completely psychotic. Get help.
Ok.
In the meantime, what happened to the 500 dollar gold you were predicting guy?
And why don't you just pay your bet?
Because he's a fucking junkie.
I am just the worst. I really am.
Well, you don't pay bets so?
^ I'm Jill Stein and I approve this message.
"AddictionMyth|11.26.16 @ 2:02PM|#
I am just the worst. I really am."
You said it.
Lol, even Jill Stein says you don't pay your bets!
AddictionMyth|11.26.16 @ 1:56PM|#
"You are completely psychotic. Get help."
Laugh minute, you are!
You've got to at least give him a 5 out-of-10 for that.
You're right, he only "turned the country into some Banana republic shithole whose only purpose was to ensure that him and his family ruled like kings and got rich off millions of oppressed and impoverished people". Good for him, lets give him a cookie........F@*King Idiot!
Let's keep perspective here. After over sixty years of public service, Fidel Castro only amassed a personal fortune of just $900 million. That's less than $15 million per year, which is similar to the rate of accumulation of the Clintons for Bill's eight years as president.
Trudeau conceded Castro was a "controversial figure," and then inexplicably decided to speak for both Castro's "supporters and detractors,"
You forgot the part where he also made his statement on 'behalf of all Canadians'.
Look Trudeau, if you want to mourn a murderous leader and your daddy's best friend, that's your business. But you do not speak for me.
Harper was at least willing to call out authoritarian regimes. Zoolander praises them.
Posted by a friend from college, who floated over here on a raft as a 1 year old:
"In Cuba, my father spent two years in solitary confinement where he was separated from his mother, his sister, his wife and his newborn daughter. He was tortured, administered electroshock therapy, forced to pull sugar cane with his barehands from sun up to sundown for no pay, and nearly starved to death. He suffers from PTSD. So, yeah... please tell me how to feel about Fidel's death"
How long before the progs make this a positive comparison to Indiana?
Of course, Shiny Pony number 1!
As a Canadian, I admit I didn't vote in the last federal elections. Harper was due to be replaced, and he turned himself into a vote buying protectionist with the TPP. I knew Justin would get in and so far, I have to say that, as a libertarian, I am very well pleased with his performance! Go ahead Justin, show the world how much of an idiot you are. Gotta love the end of his public statement :
"On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and many, many supporters of Mr. Castro. We join the people of Cuba today in mourning the loss of this remarkable leader."
First : who gives a fuck about your wife, no one voted for her, and thanks for putting her on the same level of all Canadians. Second, I just can't wait to see how the people of Cuba will be mourning their loss of that remarkable leader. Can't wait to see what his many, many supporters will do now that he is gone.
Our Justin never fails to disappoint, does he?
Anybody here about the Wisconsin recount efforts?
Wasn't the filing deadline yesterday? The only thing I've heard is that Jill Stein has apparently scammed millions of dollars from gullible idiots and that now Hillary wants in on it.
There is talk that all her donations came in via bots at the last minute
Great, so now you Lizard people have competition from the Robots?
I wonder which one of you will end up ruling us?
Robolizards
We have tried cybernetics, in fact one of your cartoons from the 80's was an eerily accurate portrayal
Go go gadget tail
You just had to go there...
Godzirra and Godzuki?
This will kill some braincells ...
Well, they do make like $74,633.71 working at home on the internet.
Just like Walter White got all those small donations in Breaking Bad.
Seriously, does anybody really believe that there are millions of people who would donate more to a pointless recount than they would to Stein's own campaign. This is obviously a Soros operation.
I am running on a platform to deny safe spaces to trolls. Can I count on your vote?
Can I count on you paying your bet?
Can I count on 500 dollar gold!
And Jeb! being the Elephant nominee, O!Care being wonderfully successful and popular (at least 8% so)....
It's a trap!
Fun fact: AddictionMyth has 173 Twitter followers.
172 are AM socks, plus his dog.
Marco Rubio had a rather awesome statement. Of course, he knows the brutality of Castro better than probably anyone else in government.
The Russians!
The left are really going to run with this Russia thing.
This is like conspiracy theory mad libs.
They've completely lost their fucking minds. I can't believe the best they could come up with is that all media besides CNN and the NYT is controlled by Putin spreading Russian propaganda and that Putin also hacked the election. I mean, space aliens would have at least been funny.
Space aliens know better than to plant mind control chips in CNN and NYT reporters brains. The chips would end up in the toilet the first time one of these reporters took a shit.
We should probably start investigating all people in government and the media for potential ties or sympathies for Russia. Maybe we can make sure that Hollywood actors aren't making subversive pro-Russia messages. It's the only way to be safe, after all.
*opera applause*
It would be nice to see Reason cover this "Media hyping claims of Russian interference" thing.
* by which i mean the major media's willingness to promote their own bullshit stories about 'fake news'....
e.g. the 'propornot.com' claims of russian-conspiracy... and making a list of confirmed-Russian-propagandists (*which included among others the Ron Paul Institute) with no real evidence offered? is basically just making an argument by assertion. "We Say These Are Bad" - therefore they are. No proof of russian-connections required.
Infowars.com doesn't need to be "true" anymore than the Weekly World News needs to be true. Being bullshit doesn't make it "Russian propaganda".
and there's also the question of how plausible this idea is anyway - when did Infowars influence anyone that didn't already believe crazy bullshit? Why would any country try and only influence *fringe media*? it makes no sense, and to believe that - even if it were true - it is somehow a *problem* is quasi ridiculous.
It seems the purpose is just to make 'lists' for their own sake. Identify Bad People who can't be trusted. And the lists that the media wants to draw up seems to include libertarians, or at least the wackier fringe versions.
Lew Rockwell yes, but i wouldn't consider ron paul a wacky fringe.
Apparently the deal here is, if you have a website and did not pimp Mrs. Clinton, you were part of the Russian conspiracy.
If they haven't named your blog yet, just wait, they will be running this bull until doomsday.
The purpose of the list (at least for PropOrNot) is to get the FBI to "investigate" all such outlets.
"McCarthyite Blacklist"?
More like the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Forbidden Books) promoted by the Catholic Church after the Council of Trent. Perhaps (to stay with the Latin) we should just call this list the Index Websitum Prohibitorum.
Fucken MSM. "Trust us, we're the only ones who can give you real information!"
Fucken CNN went so far as to say it was illegal for people to visit WikiLeaks unless they had official press badges or something.
Wow, CNN decided to raise the bar on elitism. Or lower the bar. Whatever. Is WaPo going to get listed as fake news now?
Wow, Drudgereport, which only links to other news site, including CNN, NYT, ABC, CBS, etc, is under Russian control!
"Also included are popular libertarian hubs such as Zero Hedge, Antiwar.com and the Ron Paul Institute, along with the hugely influential right-wing website the Drudge Report "
But not Reason? 🙁
They will come for the cosmotarians in the next wave or three.
I wouldn't call Zero Hedge libertarian by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe it was once, but now they just publish any tripe that seems anti-Western-establishment, including a lot of pro-Putin stuff. They used to publish a lot of pro-PRC stuff years ago too, but that's fallen by the wayside.
Still a useful resource to get a heads up about things that the MSM and even MSM-wannabes like Reason would never touch.
Meanwhile in Venezuela

Am I wrong in remembering a time, about 15 years ago or so, when it seemed like South America was finally getting it together? Or at least I thought it was.
That was the good part when there was still other people's money to steal. This is the part where they've run out of that.
I'm deeply ignorant of the local politics, so with that admitted, I recall Argentina being a place that wasn't so bad. I hear differently now. Chile seems like the only place on a positive trajectory, although, one of the guays had some things going for it if I recall.
Chile is probably the best economics wise. 10 years of Labor party control under Lula and Dilma have wrecked a once thriving economy in Brazil. Argentina's economy was also fucked really badly by their lefty, who is now out of power so we'll see what happens I guess.
Well, dear leader told them to grow some food! Why can't these peasants listen to their betters!?
The plebs are all starving equally so it's paradise.
Well, you know, it was working great until the US gave dear leader Chavista cancer. And something something capitalism, oil, and greedy shop owners.
Man, the people of Habana are in shock and deep mourning:
"Havana's 23rd Street commercial center is bustling with shoppers toting plastic bags and youngsters checking the internet on their smartphones like a normal weekend afternoon ? just hours after former Cuban leader Fidel Castro's death.
One notable difference is a lack of amplified music in Cuba's usually sonorous capital."
http://www.sfgate.com/news/wor.....637086.php
Maybe they're hoping some of the forbidden goods might start showing up now that the murderous POS breathed his last.
Unfortunately, the only thing that has changed is that now Raul is the one who has all the money.
Maybe he just isn't the cartoonish Stalinist autocrat you paint him into being? Doesn't the lack of a parade of mourners stopping work to pay tribute to their Communist Dear Leader maybe suggest that Castro was cut from a different cloth as was Stalin, Brezhnev and Mao. If everyone did stop work, knee-jerk anti-communists like you would be bitching about how the populace had been brainwashed. You can't win with someone who got paid by the US government to fight commies.
Maybe we'll have 500 dollar gold!
Maybe you'll pay your bet!
Maybe?
? I don't know what you are talking about. You have me confused with someone else and owing to your posts about gold are probably smarting from a poor investment.
No guy, you predicted 500 dollar gold.
And you haven't paid your bet.
That was shriek, this is a different cake-wanter.
Maybe he actually was a shitbag murderous autocrat irregardless of the response to his death, and your constant attempts at apologia reveal what an utterly garbage human being you are?
But quick, spew some shitty whataboutism about Vietnam!
american socialist|11.26.16 @ 2:43PM|#
"Maybe he just isn't the cartoonish Stalinist autocrat..."
Right. He's a murderous thug supported by ignoramuses like you.
Fuck off, asswipe.
Or maybe they know he's a fucking dictator and are secretly glad he's dead. Hence no fanfare. Gosh you are a thick twat. No wonder you want socialism your too stupid to contribute to society and seek to live off of it.
Castro - misunderstood
Trump - monster
That's leftism in a nutshell.
Castro is ok because Trump is doing worse! You have to give credit to Trump though, being worse than Hitler already without having yet served even one day in a position of power. That's impressive stuff!
Is "woohoo" on the list?
I've mentioned this before: my friend went to Havana during the 90s and said that their resort hotel looked like the set of I Dream of Jeannie.
That is a positive statement, right?
Only if it came with a youthful Barbara Eden...
You know, I could see the benefit of not speaking ill of the dead in the case of brutal dictator totalitarian asshat types - saying nice things about them after they're dead might encourage a few of them working on their legacies to be dead sooner just so people will talk nice about them sooner. I'm looking at you, Hillary. Drop dead right now and I promise I'll say something nice about what a fine human-type creature you were.
But she hasn't been president yet. It's still her turn!
This. I promise her that I wont use the term cunt in my eulogy.
Speak for yourself.
ESPN jumps on board.
Headline: "Fidel Castro, 90, deftly fused sports into Cuba's national identity."
Not a single negative word.
And they wonder why their ratings suck.
Oh oh! You Know Who Else deftly fused sports into his country's national identity?
Gilgamesh?
*loud applause*
You laugh, but Ur was the wrestling capital of the world, upon a time.
Is it ... ... ... Hitler?
I swear somebody told me the answer is always Hitler
way to wreck it
But he's right.
But he's right.
Obviously. But that doesn't mean it's the correct answer
Miroslav Tyr? and Jind?ich F?gner?
(This parenthetical comment is added to keep the server squirrels from bitching about those non-ASCII characters.)
Emperor Comitus?
Erich Honecker?
Next thing you know, they will be blaming crappy Monday Night Football ratings on racism AND capitalism.
This is one of those illuminating events that reveal how a lot of 'liberals' actually view the government. It's not about some 'contract' between people and the state. It's not about protecting liberties, respecting universal rights, providing impartial justice. There's nothing reminiscent of Hobbes or Locke or Montesquieu or Paine or Mill in any of these commentaries. It's purely about the state as an instrument of change. And if that entails violence and oppression? Well duh, those are the means available to the state. The state exists, it can do these great wide scale things, so what ultimately matters is whether it is successful. Castro killed and imprisoned the citizens he was supposed to serve? He had no regard for their rights? At least he got them to read (state-approved material)!
And the leaders damn themselves most of all. The people elected by liberal democracies make clear that they don't judge each other (and thus themselves) by their fidelity to liberal principles. It's about how much of a mark the person left on the world. Cuba was not "determinedly independent," Higgins. Castro was, and the Cuban people had to endure it. It couldn't be clearer that these people judge leadership according to that leader's personal characteristics and triumphs, and not their adherence to the liberal justification for authority.
It's not like the left aren't putting their true nature on display right now. Violent riots, destruction of property, making death threats to electors, trying to challenge the election results after screaming about Trump not respecting the election results. Praising tyrannical dictators. The mask is fully off now.
Praising tyrannical dictators is nothing new for the left. That mask slipped decades ago.
True enough. It's the concentration of these commentaries that's so special. So many purported liberals can't just admit that he was a tyrant. They need to make excuses or praise him outright.
Well said.
What's remarkable are all these people in Canada and the US insisting that Cuba is a "Success", and making statistical claims to prove it.
But the only stat that matters is whether citizens living in that "success"-state want to stay, or whether immigrants want to come there.. Amazingly, the expatriate boats only seem to be coming in one direction.
Yep, the minute someone dares even suggest ambivalence about a world leader who condemned U.S. Militarism out come the knives from neocon assholes like you. Predictable.
Ambivalence about a murderous, repressive totalitarian is very revealing... you just keep showing your ass to the world.
You're projecting again, amsoc. In the US people get to praise Castro as much as they please with impunity, just as they can criticize him, or their own leaders. In Cuba under Castro, people do not enjoy such freedom. When they dare, as you say, out come the knives.
More over, the fact that Hitler opposed Bolshevik militarism does not redeem him, so it definitely shouldn't redeem Castro, who was far more militaristic than the US.
You only get to be the "Good guy" when you're committing less evil (and hopefully, markedly so) than the people you're opposing.
Hey there are two dead people which the brady bunch lady. We know the famou die in threes. Cmon Hillary, I am rooting for you to...ahem....win
Not me. I want Hillary to strap on the oxygen tank and try it again in 2020. If you thought her loss this year was fun, wait until the next one.
Unfortunately, the one we lost who completed that trio was actor Ron Glass. Many remember him for his role on "Barney Miller," but to me, he's always and forever Shepherd Book from Firefly.
Damn, that sucks. RIP, Shep.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is a sociopath. His full statement:
"It is with deep sorrow that I learned today of the death of Cuba's longest serving President.
"Fidel Castro was a larger than life leader who served his people for almost half a century. A legendary revolutionary and orator, Mr. Castro made significant improvements to the education and healthcare of his island nation.
"While a controversial figure, both Mr. Castro's supporters and detractors recognized his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for "el Comandante".
"I know my father was very proud to call him a friend and I had the opportunity to meet Fidel when my father passed away. It was also a real honour to meet his three sons and his brother President Ra?l Castro during my recent visit to Cuba.
"On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and many, many supporters of Mr. Castro. We join the people of Cuba today in mourning the loss of this remarkable leader."

Such tone dead propaganda is expected from an Ayatollah but a Canadian Prime Minister?
Gavin McIness said that Canada elected "Joey from 'Friends' ". He clearly overestimated Trudeau's intelligence.
Trudeau is not a sociopath, he is a moron. There's a significant difference.
Indeed.
Sociopaths are usually of average intelligence. Justin's a fencepost with better hair.
I don't know man. He's pretty damn arrogant which puts him on that path I reckon.
More likely narcissistic personality disorder.
Sociopaths are hyper-rational and self-interested but manipulate people around them into believing that they have an emotional mindset (Clinton is a good example). Trudeau actively believes that he's the most moral person in the room because he has a purely emotional mindset that revolves around his own status. His 'empathy' is a product of narcissism, not a product of manipulation.
Sociopathy is simply a lack of empathy or moral sensibility -- it has no correlation with intelligence.
Extremely rational is not the same as intelligence. Sociopaths are aware of how they emotionally manipulate people to their own ends.
SOME sociopaths do that, yes. Most do not have that much emotional intelligence and wind up dead or going in and out of jail their whole lives.
I see Obama as more like Zoolander, suffering from narcissism, but not necessarily evil. Clinton on the other hand is more like a Castro, a true sociopath who will feel no remorse at murdering thousands or even millions if it's what it takes to solidify power.
Not at all mutually exclusive. You don't see many stupid sociopaths because they usually quickly wind up dead or in jail, but they do exist. Now a stupid sociopath whose dad is a beloved prime minister, well that's an entirely different story.
Zoolander was the proper nickname.
Reads like an 8th-grade social studies assignment.
And that, dear small "l" libertarians, is why we find it hard sharing a planet with the left.
Ueah. This election taught me that there are tens of millions if genuinely evil people. I really do believe most Hillary voters are evil
With Castro dead perhaps Hillary will start campaigning to become Cuba's first woman president.
Obama for Cuban President 2017 - Si Sue Puede!
"With Castro dead perhaps Hillary will start campaigning to become Cuba's first woman president."
Not sure Cubans are that stupid; she'll need Stein to come up with the dough for a "recount".
Lechon Cubano and a Cuba Libre (or 3) for dinner. It's settled.
So anyone check LewRockwell or Raimondo? I bet they are mourning Castro too like they did for Chavez.
Dammit. Let's try again.
Oh boy
Aw, I thought it was going to be some article saying that the CIA gave Fidel Cancer like they did to Chavez...
HURGLEBARGLEGUUUURGH
Rothbardian Leninism leads to weird stuff.
I go there like twice a year. It's always disconcerting when I remember that I used to read that place regularly.
In fairness to those idiots, Tom DiLorenzo wrote what seems to be an appropriately harsh denunciation of Castro. I didn't bother to do more than skim it, because Tom DiLorenzo, but I'm going to guess he had no more than 5 denunciations of Lincoln in the thing.
"Castro, who was on a level of evil alongside that of Abraham Lincoln..."
It is right about Hillary though. And I'm gonna vote for uninformed and stupid as to the why.
"So how will the Castroite/LP anti-Trump Popular Front work?" Balko/Walker/Soave
So Turdeau Jr. is a fan of Castro, what a shock. Just like Turdeau Sr.
Now time for Raoul to kick the bucket so maybe this US re-establishing ties to Cuba thing might actually lead to good things...
Somehow you actually think Fidel's death transformed that island into something other than a gulag in the sea?
Yeah now it's a feudal state, where power is passed to one's.. brother.
I'm referring to the whole "ending embargo will free Cuba" stuff Reason published when the US restored diplomatic relations...
I said Raoul too....
It's not something that happens instantly.
Next week at Reason: Cuba, Rare in Latin America for its Peaceful Transitions of Power for over Half of a Century ...
I think the logic goes like this:
Right-wingers don't like Castro.
I don't like right-wingers.
Therefore I like Castro.
You can't hate Hitler and Stalin at the same time. It is known.
Both where leftists. Decades of propaganda by the communist loving progressive movement has convinced many Hitler and Nazism were right wing, but the fact is that the Nazis were socialists. Don't take my word for it. Research what letter "S" in NSDAP - the Nazi party name- stands for. These two collectivists hated each other so much based on the definition of which form of collectivism was better. The truth is that neither are.
I'll actually make a counter-argument. Simply labeling yourself as something doesn't mean it actually represents your policies. For example, the chic word for leftists in the past two decades has become "progressive," even if it's not exactly descriptive or meaningful for their actual ideals. Putting "All natural" on a label was, and still is, a marketing technique to make people think it's healthy.
To some extent, they threw in the "Socialist" part of that title because it was the cool thing to call yourself a socialist in the 20s and 30s. Also, definitions of words change over time, especially words on the political spectrum (which is why I call myself a "classical liberal") The core of fascism was really identity-based politics, rather than anything policy-based. They were hyper masculine, hated communism, extremely nationalistic, and typically interested in racial purity-this was quite true in Japan, also.
But it is worth noting that many of the policies they instituted do align with the modern definition of socialism.
In a race for most pathetic lefty rag, the Chron is taking a lead. Here's some captions to the photos under this headline:
"The Latest: Venezuelan leader plans ceremony honoring Castro"
1) "Anti-Trump candlight vigil gathers in the Castro" (I guess the word "Castro" threw off the editors)
2) "Donald Trump denounced Fidel Castro after some of his companies looked into doing business in Cuba." (Uh, OK then)
3) "A Venezuelan militia member stands next a banner of Fidel Castro in the 23 de Enero neighborhood of Caracas, Venezuela, Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016." (he appears to be farting in the direction of a Castro banner)
4) "People celebrate the death of Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Miami, Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016." (finally, something on topic)
http://www.sfgate.com/news/wor.....637086.php
Maduro earlier declared three days of official mourning for Castro, who provided key assistance and mentoring to Chavez after he was released in 1994 from imprisonment for a failed attempt to overthrow Venezuela's government with a military coup.
He would have declared a fast as well, but Venezuelans were already doing that regardless.

You mucked up the link
do you purposely shorten links for some reason? it seems easier (and faster) to just add the whole link in via hyperlink (e.g. )
That's not even a good Harkonnen Trudeau eulogy.
"Vladimir Harkonnen, LGBT activist and supporter of alternative lifestyle choices, died today. He will be remembered for his reforms to the Arrakian economy and contributions to Fremen culture."
Also, Robby Soave may be a millennial caricature most of the time, but at least he knows that Stannis Baratheon is the true king of Westeros by right of inheritance and skill.
The one true King of Westeros is Jon Snow, son of House Targaryen and House Stark.
House Targaryen lost its right to the throne by means of combat. Their dying line of foreign Valyrian blood only brings madness and decay.
Or maybe they should have a constitutional republic instead of a monarchy?
Hell, I would have preferred the High Sparrow's theocracy to the Iron Throne.
House Targaryen lost its right to the throne by means of combat.
Stannis lost at Kings Landing too, and had to limp back to Dragonstone, so does that mean his right goes away too?
Until one sits on the throne, one cannot lose it.
Then how did Daenerys lose it? She hasn't sat on the throne either.
If you say "the last Targaryen king lost it" then you've condemned your own position, since the last Baratheon lost it too.
The last Baratheon did not lose it by means of combat, they lost it due to trickery and illegitimate lineage. Joffrey and Tommen are both considered Baratheons in order to have any legitimate claim to the throne.
Fuck the king.
ENB's reply is good.

Makes Twitter worthwhile today.
They are. Although at first I misread the hashtag and thought it said trudeaulogies, which is what I now prefer. It is a wonderful new portmanteau: Trudeau + Eulogy = trudeaulogy.
trudeaulogy (n.) The product of a moron polishing a turd.

Nobody can be that stupid.
Can we still toss his corpse out of a helicopter off the coast of Florida?
Dump him where Osama is.
Place his body in front of Versailles Restaurant in Little Havana, and let the crowd loose.
Mussolini 2.0 would be fitting.
What the anti-Fascists did to Mussolini's body in Milan would pale in comparison to what a crowd of Cuban-Americans would do to Castro if they could.
I wonder how wood chippers are operational in Little Havana?
how many*
There are many, many landscaping companies owned by Cuban-Americans in the area. So the answer is "probably a lot."
There's no fun in it if he's already dead.
Now, if the Cuban exiles had gotten a hold of him alive... the result may well be beyond even my macabre powers of imagination.
2016 has really robbed us of a lot of joy
His evil twin is still alive. There's still hope for the woodchipppers.
If only there was a worse place than hell for Castro.
I'm celebrating tonight. Humanity gained today.

CAL vs. UCLA at 4PM PST
It'll be like watching the Special Olympics.
Fuck Michigan. That was beautiful.
Also, second Thanksgiving is down. Thursday we had steak, today we had the traditional turkey and shit. The woman made some kind of fucking Romanian cheesy butter-grits thing, and that was pretty all right. No wonder those old timey fucks in the old country were so into having pellagra.
I had leftover turkey, mp, and stuffing smothered with the last of the gravy before the Buckeye game. A little cranberry mashmallow desert at halftime. We still have too much food left.
The use of marshmallows in food that's intended to be consumed by adults always confuses me. Have you no butter, sir? Is there no whipped cream?
Yes both. Yeah I don't know who started that whole cranberry thing. It's like a marshalling jello thing. It's actually pretty good though. I've had plenty of pie with whipped cream.
Don't get me wrong, it sounds good. It's just... I dunno. Those are for s'mores.
And hot chocolate, and peanut butter banana sandwiches.
I'm cooking Cuban (sort of) tonight.
I fried dry basmati rice, onion, garlic, and tomato sofrito in Achiotina until it was nicely browned. Then I added 2 quarts of incredibly rich turkey stock that was leftover from Thursday.
That's going with black beans, lechon, and pollo asado.
The closest I could find to a cuban beer was Cusque?a, which isn't very close.
Achiotina sounds wonderful. You're always cooking something good.
One good meal a day. The other 2 are healthful, otherwise I'd be a fat ass.
I get a kick out of the healthcare talking point....he gave them healthcare! ( how does one give healthcare by the way?)
Yea sure if you like:
- slaves as doctors
- 3rd world facilities
- lack of treatments/medicines/procedures
but it is so awesome otherwise!
If the automotive standard in Cuba is any indication of the same for their free healthcare system, I get the feeling that the idiots pointing out that Cubans have free healthcare would be content with free healthcare at the level of the early 50s.....
the early 50s.....
1850s?

Yea sure if you like:

And of course Castro didn't use this vaunted medical system. He had his own doctor he flew in from Spain.
But but but but free universal care! /prog
But taxpayers still paid the bill, so there's still that aspect
Eh not really since their doctors and nurses are essentially coerced slaves....truly free healthcare!
They did, however, pay the bill to fly in Castro's personal doctor from Spain whenever he was needed.
Did all the doctors who bankrolled his revolution move to Spain, or does he just stop trusting that lot after he became island boss?
Yeah, letting doctors that you have enslaved work on you was far riskier than paying some Spanish capitalist money to look after his health..
He didn't survive all that time by actually believing any of the drivel he spouted to the masses...
Oh no, I was talking about the ones who fled Batista and financed the Castro boys from the US. Lawyers too.
The ends always justify the means.

After the election of Trump and watching idiots without an intellectual and moral compass fawn over a murderous dictator, I posit not only are we mired in a Dark Age, we're also witnessing a bloodless civil war to pull us out of it.
My favorite comment @ NYT
Proggies gonna prog, the whole world round ...
Of course, the Obama admin and other leftist regimes worldwide didn't tiptoe around trying to find something nice to say about Saddam Hussein, Kim Jong Il, or Mohmar Gaddafi when they died, and Castro was every bit as bad. Don't give me the bullshit about not wanting to piss off his brother who's still in power either, who gives a damn? What's he going to do, embargo the rest of the world?
You want a little cheese with that whine Harbaugh you big stupid baby.
Which Harbaugh needs to be punched in the face harder? Show your work.
The one on the Ravens. The Michigan one is insane, so I think he is excused. The Ravens one is either sane, or mostly sane - so he needs to get Ray Riced.
Jimbo is like the Bobby Knight of Big Ten football.
And Big Ten football totally deserves that.
6 teams in the top 25 not enough for you?
Porque no los dos?
Isn't bitching about the officials pretty much standard in that game? Like, going back to the days of Woody and Bo?
You want to talk whining? Just wait until tOSSed U doesn't make the CFP.
Fidel Castro remains one of the revolutionary figures of the 20th century. His legacy will be judged by history.
I could see "letting history judge" for something that happened 5 or even 10 years ago. But this douchebag was in power for nearly 60 years and didn't change his policy much during that time. So the judgement is pretty much already baked in.
Shorter Obama. Hollywood cocktail party time starts in two months, so I'm just going to pass.
I feel pretty comfortable about judging murderous dictators in the here and now.
Great news. The only thing I regret is that this didn't happen thirty years earlier.
Have fun in hell, you murderous piece of shit.
Addendum: The 1960s were, in fact, fifty years ago, not thirty.
Fuck, I'm getting old.
We all know that Trump is full of shit and doesn't really care about anything other than the Brand and his golf courses, but let's hope that his advisors and cabinet don't fuck up what Obama has done in improving relations with Cuba.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016.....obile.html
Socialist you know your ideology has murdered 100+ million in the last century right? But you care!
I thought capitalistic trade is evil and exploitative. Shouldn't you want Trump to reinstate the embargo so the Cuban people aren't enslaved by perfidious corporations?
Several leftist commentators have actually advised people to visit Cuba now before it gets ruined by American corporations.
These people are evil
Thoroughly evil and don't speak for the majority.
A couple of years ago, on a somewhat related note, progs were freaking out Starbucks were opening up in the Jean-Talon market in Montreal. They squawked on about the usual it will *ruin* the market and destroy local cafes (never mentioning there already was a corporate coffee shop Presse Cafe in the area of Little Italy/JT market). They were the only ones making noise even - surprise - taking to vandalizing the local where SB's was set to open. Local shops and consumers didn't mind though as one vendor in the market put it 'it's a free market'.
From the onset it has proven to be enormously popular and all the screaming Hyenas went away.
Point is, they'd rather empty locales and decadence then have a thriving environment.
My only problem is a very good pizza restaurant sold to SB's.
Oh come now, you don't think a Starbucks might ruin the rustic charm of the post apocalyptic like ghettos in Cuba?
You can appreciate the quaintness and unspoilt charm of Havana much more when you have an exit visa and a plane ticket back to civilization in a couple of days.
Exactly. Especially if you like macabre charm.
"I thought capitalistic trade is evil and exploitative. Shouldn't you want Trump to reinstate the embargo so the Cuban people aren't enslaved by perfidious corporations?"
Lefty logic:
"The US embargo is the cause of Cuban poverty!"
"Globalism is causing lower wages!"
The US embargo is the cause of Cuban poverty. Without the embargo they would have cut off Fidel's nads decades ago and kicked the commies out.

"We all know that Trump is full of shit"
We all know that asswipe is full of shit.
Fuck off.
He's either a troll laughing it up watching our responses or he really is a morally and intellectually bankrupted socialist.
I'm guessing both, which is the reason I'm not about to respond with anything other than insults, and an invitation to get lost.
Or else what. Raul embargoes us? Not likely.
I despise Trump for a shitload of reasons, but one thing that's already been made abundantly clear is that all that had to be done in some international disputes that bedeviled the Obama administration was just stand up to the other side, and they would back down almost immediately. BO had no spine to do so.
The BBC article on Trump's tweets nailed Obama's problem (probably unintentionally) -- "Obama sought to improve relations with the Cuban government."
I'm all for improving relations and opening trade with the Cuban people and voluntary organizations thereof. The authoritarian Cuban government, on the other hand, can go fuck itself with a rusty rebar. All I expect from them is to stay out of the way, and if they don't, well...
Yeah, I agree, if the Raul will open up travel with the US and even allow business and trade relations with the people of Cuba, what is the downside? Once the Cubans see what it's like on the other side, they're not going to be happy and will start demanding change. Hell, they can all come here as far as I'm concerned, because like most people who've actually had to live under communism, they're not going to be trying to bring it here. Raul can bitch and moan all he wants, he's a toothless little prick.
Yep... which is also why the fucking embargo should have been lifted decades ago. The embargo was the best thing that ever happened for Castro.
I agree. It's one of the only decent things Obama has tried to do and it was probably an accident since that jug eared fool can't seem to do anything right intentionally.
The embargo on Cuba was just as wrong as the one on apartheid-era South Africa.
AmSoc, champion of free trade. Precious.
Well, Marx was an avid proponent of free trade, just not free markets.
When can we expect socialist to move to socialist paradise Venezuela or Cuba?
Never. You think they're going to give up their share of your stuff that easily?
They would move to Venezuela. No joke, they would, like a shot. But there's no work, crime is through the roof, the police are abusive, most people live in poverty without social services, education is abysmal and the markets are a non-functional disaster. That's just unreasonable.
Maybe when there's a country with policies exactly like Venezuela's, but without all that bad stuff.
They won't even move to Canada. I'm very disappointed. Maybe Calexit is real. Yeah right, it will be about 5 minutes before they're begging for a bailout from US tax payers. And they'll totally fail to see the irony in that.
It's almost like Canada has unfriendly immigration policies.
Gavin Mcinnes guide on moving to Canada
On the day the Scots vote to leave the UK, then *CA* seceeding might be possible.
I wonder which way they are going to change the voting age for the next UK exit vote?
Why do they threaten Canada instead of Mexico anyway? They never go anywhere anyhow.
Funny, I just told my wife that Castro is dead, she hasn't watched any news today. When I told her she just stood silent for a few seconds and then said 'Well, I think he's in the hell now'. I larfed.
Amid more forelock-tugging over WHAT TRUMP MIGHT DO!!!!!', we get:
"To Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, who has led American delegations to Cuba since the late 1970s, Castro was a complex and misunderstood figure.
"Given his reputation, the embargo, and all the hostility, I was surprised to see he was a very kind person," Lee said Saturday, recalling how she met the Cuban leader several times at the National Capitol Building in Havana and once at his house."

Yep, more 'trains on time' apologia for a mass murderer.
He was such a kind person. So kind. Always asked nicely.
My family in Brazil are now texting me stuff making fun of Trudeau. I told them that there's a reason why we call him Zoolander. It's mostly this #TrudeauEulogies.
Trudeaueulogies
I don't think a PM in my lifetime have so embarrassed and besmirched this country like this dope has with one single eulogy.
If it makes you feel any better, Obama's own statement was not that much better. He just pretty much abstained from saying anything substantive, like always. Trump OTOH, was perfect with 'Fidel Castro is dead!'.
We all know what Obama really thinks. I'm pretty sure it's along the lines of what Ding-Dong said.
Yep.
His dad was still worse, but better at covering it up. Justin's response is because he's a moron, Pierre saw a kinship in Castro.
He obviously thinks he can ride his father's smarts. Except he's not fooling anyone; except the fools who voted for him.
You guys should have elected Gary Trudeau - just as leftist as Zoolander, knows what a dictator is and doesn't kiss their arses.
Good, we need the Trudeau political dynasty to die with this guy, and embarrassment is more likely to do it than bad policy.

Um...
"Maistre, considered by Masseau and Didier[6] to have been a key figure of what they termed as the Counter-Enlightenment, saw monarchy both as a divinely sanctioned institution and as the only stable form of government.[7] He called for the restoration of the House of Bourbon to the throne of France and argued that the Pope should have ultimate authority in temporal matters."

Thought on the election: the Dems were sure that they'd win Florida. The reason? Cubans. See, Trump made mean remarks about Mexicans, Mexicans speak Spanish, Cubans speak Spanish, therefore, Cubans=Mexicans=Democratic voters.
Forgetting, of course, that most of the Cubans in Florida were either refugees, or descendants of refugees, from Castro's hell. And they didn't want the American version of socialism that the Dems were selling.
Stupid, stupid Democrats.
There was also that whole jive about descendants of refugees not giving a shit about anything the Castro boys did.
That was a.... miscalculation.
I've been reading about how my friends' parents were tortured with car batteries pretty much all day.
Those miscalculations are pretty interesting and worthy of study. It is as if there were no calculations made at all. No data gathered, no study. Like they just made a grand assumption and kept telling it to each other until it showed up in articles and talk shows.
On election night I remember watching the tv. Whatever channel i was watching kept switching to some (physically attractive) twit in Miami. She was covering, apparently, her family get together, but calling it an election night gathering of Latinos. I bet she said "Latinos" two dozen times in her thirty second dispatch.
I assume she was Cuban, she seemed to have inside access to the family gathering.
But, seriously? To think that Cubans self-identified with Mexican immigrants?
I mean, you know, the Poles and the Irish are both white Europeans, so they must agree on everything, right?
*Besides potatoes of course.
What about Poles and Germans?
If the (physically attractive) twit was *Erika Delgado, I'd forgive her anything.
*Drool.
Look, these are the people who are screaming that a white chick played the role of an Asian dude in 'Dr Strange' and that a white chick is playing a Japanese cyborg in GITS - and then turn around and praise it as 'groundbreaking' when a black chick plays a Russian princess. And when you ask them for suggestions as to which actress should play the GITS role they respond with the names of *Korean and Chinese* actresses.
Not only is consistency not something they're capable of, to them . . . Mexicans *are* Cubans are Puerto Ricans are Dominicans are Colombians.
At least the anti-immigration commenters here know there is a difference - even if they don't care.
It's all them brown people, right? And they love us, right! White people are bad! I bet if the avg brain dead leftist realized that there are almost as many blue eyed white people in central and South America as in the USA, they would shit their pants.
Yeah, no shit. You know who the rich and powerful are in South and Central America? Pure(ish) Spanish blood folk. And, surprise! Spanish people are white Europeans!
Also, little known fact: many of the blonde-haired, blue-eyed Spanish have Irish ancestors.
Here's the story as I aremember it, if anybody cares: the crown prince of some medieval Irish kingdom accidentally killed his father on a hunting trip. Everybody accepted that it was truly an accident, but they couldn't very well crown the guy who killed the king, so he went into exile. He, and a bunch of followers, took a ship, and ended up in the Kingdoms of Castile and Leon during the Reconquesta, and being nobility, married other (Spanish) nobility.
Of course, all the European nobility were incestuous, so there are many other blonde and blue eyed aristocrats who donated to the Spanish gene pool.
Well the Spaniards evened it out a bit with about an 130-years long occupation of the Netherlands, no?
NEVER FORGET!
*raises Netherlands Flag*
Go to southern Brazil or Argentina and if you don't hear anyone speak or know where you are, try to tell if you're not in the whitest part of Europe. You can't. This ridiculous identity politics white hate shit the left is spewing is a disaster of unprecedented magnitude in political history. Just let them keep it up. I encourage them.
It is as if they have ever seen a food show on a PBS cable channel. Pati's Mexican Table and Rick Bayless's Mexican Kitchen.
I am one of those with... concerns... over the high levels of illegal immigration by uneducated, unskilled, and socialist leaning immigration from central and south America.
But yes, to classify them all as "Latinos" is ignorant and insulting to them.
Try calling a Brazilian Latino or Hispanic. Technically, they are both, but they still will not like it. They think of themselves as 'South Americans', or just Brazilians and will be offended by being called either of the former terms.
What about last of the Western Hemisphere slavers?
Human Resources: Pope Francis, you just complimented an atheist dictator. What would you say it is that you do here, exactly?
Commie Pope.
Slowly kill God
I have people skills!! I am good at dealing with people!!! Can't you understand that?!? WHAT THE HELL IS
WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!!!!!!!
Ha.
Yes, well. According to the Catholic Church the Pope "is preserved from the possibility of error "when, in the exercise of his office as shepherd and teacher of all Christians, in virtue of his supreme apostolic authority, he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole Church.""
So, either God is a weak-minded communist, the doctrine of infallibility is wrong, or support of socialist evil doesn't count as "faith or morals to be held by the whole church". I'ma guess the second.
You know who was a good Pope? The Polack, Pope John Paul II. There was a man who recognized evil when he saw it, and actively fought against it. What do you think he would have said about what Francis said about Castro? I'ma guess he would of punched the little socialist in his mouth. POPE FIGHT!
There's a lot of talk about what Obama can do after he's out of office.
I might have a solution.
Looks like that SCOTUS appointment is out. I've been saying for years that he'll wind up at the UN. Other than that, maybe he winds up on Maduro's cabinet or as VP for Raul?
I've been saying for years that he'll wind up at the UN.
This has been my theory ever since he won the Nobel prize for bullshit. He has a lot more headaches in store for us.
"This has been my theory ever since he won the Nobel prize for bullshit. He has a lot more headaches in store for us."
I doubt it.
The UN is where you park your idiot nephew so he can't cause a lot of problems. I just hope Trump gets the EU to pick up the tab so Obo can tour the world making irrelevant speeches on someone elses' dime.
Not to defend the Catholics but the doctrine of infallibility is pretty tightly constrained to a limited number of situations. Not every word from the Pope is the word of God - not even every *official* pronouncement from him activates that doctrine.
My internet is down. Does anyone have the score of the Cal game?
Yes, I have the score.
Two
42
If your intertoobz are down, how can we tell you?
Let me worry about that.
Do you have the score or not?
Nope. But you seem to be connected to the intertoobz. Oh, never mind.
Of the 3 to 5 typographical symbols involved, I guarantee one is a hyphen.
15-love in the bottom if the 5th. Cal just missed a free throw. So now the other team gets the puck.
Well the "third death" is Shepherd Book. Ron Glass, Emmy-Nominated Actor Known for 'Barney Miller' and 'Firefly,' Dies at 71
Oh, someone else beat me to this. What a shame. Excellent actor, very charismatic, and a lovely human being.
My favorite episode that YouTube hasn't blocked yet I thought his best episode was "Uniform Day" and runners up were when he was getting sued for "Blood on the Badge".
Here, let me try to praise Castro:
Castro was a long-time ruler, independent and charismatic, who truly did it "his way", baby.
And by "his way", I mean you better do it his way, or may lose a bit more than that haircut, eh, comrade? He he.
How'd I do?
Janet Reno and Castro within weeks of each other? That's a damn good month!
Combine that with the evil witch suffering yet another humiliating defeat. It's good times. Not quite the libertarian moment, but still good.
There was also an election.
Really? I didn't see anything in the news about it.
Do you even jug wine anymore, bro?
Re: Higgins, as an Irishman, he's pretty much a hero in our country. He called the tea party "a bunch of wankers" and is advocating that philosophy be put on the national syllabus so people can more easily sort fact from fiction in the future.
In short, you clearly know nothing about the man.
I understand how Americans hate Castro so much, as you've been fed a single narrative from coast to coast about him all your life, but reality is grey. Why don't you ask yourselves why he has his supporters before using ill-thought pejoratives?
"Why don't you ask yourselves why he has his supporters"
We don't need to ask ourselves, we have a large population of useful idiots right here in the USA.
If you can find a supporter that's not a direct relative of his, or isn't a rich white academic, I'd love to talk to them.
No? You can fuck right off, coward.
Better yet, find any supporter who is a working class Cuban. You can't, and that is why his death is being celebrated on the streets in Florida. He deserved far worse
But they're still going to be life long democratic socialist voters, right? LOL.
I saw a commenter here mention a while back how he saw some Venezuelen man shout at a Bernie supporter for being an idiot. If only we could trust the experiences of the people who haved actually lived through all these failed governments
The few expats of Soviet era Russia that I've met, hate leftists even more than libertarians do.
It's worth noting that Castro's own daughter loathes him.
Is that a fact? You wouldn't happen to have a link to a story recounting such tales?
Google "Alina Fernandez".
She must be HATED by the progs.
Svetlana Stalin could tell her some stories.
Granddaughter Olga is still single.
Would
Huh, I can't imagine why.
She dwarfs an M-16! Is she bigger than Penn Jillette?
Castro's sister defected in 1964.
And Richard Dawkin's daugther is an Christian. Does that mean evolution's not true then?
Seriously though, it appears I've sparked a lot of replies. Thanks to everyone who gave a reasoned reply, as it gave me some food for thought. I hope you'll forgive me for posting this everywhere but I'd like to reach you all. I'd first like to make some clarifications:
1. I'm not a socialist. I was, but got sick of it.
2. I do realize I've been fed a narrative. That's why I'm here. Are you doing the same?
3. While I have respect for libertarians, I'll never be one. I love the impulse to freedom you embody I'm from a country where what you would deem "socialism" actually (kinda) works. I'm a working class Irishman with a college education. My father worked in a factory. Due to the free college education in our country I was allowed to better myself and am proud that I did. It was due to the efforts of a generation of people like Michael D. Higgins that I could. I don't believe humans are free, we have responsibilities to our fellow citizens and *some* socialist polices can rectify historical imbalances, as it did with me.
4. I'm aware that Cuban Americans hate Castro. It's interesting as the few Cubans I met in Europe said something along the lines of "he's alright, but he's hampered by the embargoes". I know you're aware of this argument, it just appears from my (admittedly narrow) observations that the American media spends more time on the Cubans that vociferously denounce Castro than the ones who don't. That would make sense, right?
5. "Because there remain infantile imbeciles who think they can get something for nothing". Then we should take the responsibility to educate them. Is denouncing them enough?
6. Sorry to say, but American media is the single-most polarized media in the world. The subdivisions are remarkable. What's wrong with trying to take a nuanced view? I'm not American, so don't just "charge into the valley of death", convinced of how right I am, no matter what I do. That's your job (and you do it well).
7. He called the TP "a bunch of wankers" during a radio interview with a TP member, so it was quite pertinent, if you understand the context.
8. I don't recall pledging any support to Castro or his regime in my comment, but it appears many read it. A little quick to cry foul, aren't we?
9. I want to reiterate, I'm not some champagne socialist. I'm from the industrial working class, but with a college degree. A generation ago I would probably have been a union-organizing hard leftist. But I know enough of the world now to know that's not the answer. Truth is, I don't know what I am. I see some things that work; you decry them as socialist. I see other things; liberals decry me as a Nazi. Make of that what you will.
The bottom line is that Higgins is a septuagenarian man that grew up during a time where the only existing dichotomy was between imperialism and socialism. Having been oppressed by English colonialism for more than 600 years our newly independent country was looking for a better alternative to educate the nation about their rights and lift our citizens out of poverty. He believes this with good intentions. Trust me, I've spoken to him, and he doesn't deserve the derogatory comments of some snarling American youths whose only information they have about him is gleaned from this article.
Interesting website, I'm considering staying here if you'll welcome a resident antagonist that wants to sincerely challenge your views (I love ya, really!!!)

I think you're onto something here.

It appears that you are a disallowed character. My deepest condolences.
"...Why don't you ask yourselves why he has his supporters before using ill-thought pejoratives?..."
Because there remain infantile imbeciles who think they can get something for nothing.
Is that too difficult for you?
That's easy. If he has Cuban supporters, its because they're terrified they'll end up like these people
And if he has supporters from outside Cuba, its because they desperately want the power to do the same thing to *their* enemies. They fetishize that kind of power. Which is why most Castro supporters are weedy intellectuals.
Commie kid assured us that starvation in Cuba hasn't been any worse than in the US. Finding this took 30 seconds:
"Millions of Cubans facing starvation: Hunger is fuelling an exodus of desperate refugees, writes Phil Davison from Havana"
[...]
"'Cats were among the first to go since they're said to taste okay. I had my three robbed from my house in January,' said Sylvia, a 32-year- old unmarried mother who lives in the Playa district and works as an administrator in a state hospital.
'I've heard of people eating dogs, those little ones that have no fur, but I think that's the exception. They say dog meat tastes bad and you still see plenty of stray dogs. Most people have drawn the line there. So far.'"

Oh, well in that case it is because of the US embargo.

BTW, this piece of happy horseshit is amusing also:
"...as you've been fed a single narrative from coast to coast about him all your life, but reality is grey."
Yeah, grey. Like getting the trains to run on time offsets mass murder. I think there's a place for you, providing propaganda to some murderous regimes!
The single line narrative I've been fed by academia, all my life, is exactly the load of bull you quoted.
Hmmm, I'll think about your argument.
* thinks *
Actually, that's thoroughly unconvincing. Lot's of leaders are liked by certain groups. They can't all be awesome.
Try again.
Millions wept at Stalin's funeral.
Get a load of this guy. Why do you presume it's 'ill-thought'. Some of us are very well-read (I have a history degree guy) and have arrived at our conclusions about this dirt bag based on actual knowledge. We're just calling out the utter bull shit and immorality of it all.
The bottom line is he was a dictator who murdered, imprisoned and impoverished millions.
There's no effen grey here. Progs love to use this 'nuanced' angle yet are the least nuanced people out there.
May he burn in hell.
I have a history degree guy
ME TOO! His name is Tom Woods. He keeps asking for money, but he puts out enough free stuff to keep me busy.
I understand how Americans hate Castro so much, as you've been fed a single narrative from coast to coast about him all your life, but reality is grey. Why don't you ask yourselves why he has his supporters before using ill-thought pejoratives?
Perhaps you should talk to the friends and family of those tortured or executed by Castro's regime before you begin lecturing us on how reality is grey?
I think it's better knowing all these systems; from Rand to Rawls, from Marx to Nozick, than none at all.

One more thing. Since it was an interview with a TP activist on Irish radio trying to interfere in Irish affairs, it wasn't an interjection in American affairs. You should know that America puts it's hands into 99% of the world's shit, not the other way around.
Thanks Reason for giving me one more reason to hate Trudeau.
Its strange in all the eulogies that no one seems to mention all the gays Castro sent to re-education prisons for 30 years.
He evolved.
Queer, isn't it?
*narrows gays?
Boo! Hiss!
*takes a bow
"Wherever there is a jackboot stomping on a human face there will be a well-heeled Western liberal to explain that the face does, after all, enjoy free health care and 100 percent literacy."

Nice!
thats the best quote i've heard all day.
too bad about the source. All you'll get in reply is, "Uh, Racist?!"
Yeh. Great line. Wrong person.
True. Perhaps we can ascribe it to someone more palatable to the masses?
i just drop it like its me
The delicious irony here is quoting a famous socialist to decry socialism? Tautology much?
The prog derp squad, after being reminded of all his crimes, are now countering with "But the US meddled in XYZ Latin American country and did far worse!" as though, even if that were true, it somehow excuses everything he did
.
It's hopeless. For the rest of our lives, there will be fuckwads who never experienced his regime but still idolize the man. I never experienced Cuba either, but I trust the opinions of everyone who fled, and they're all celebrating tonight. I will too
Well, Obama lived for 8 years on nothing but 'Booosh did it too!'. I rest my case.
Oh, that's been the standard default line when you call them out since I can remember.
My personal fave is the one about Chile.
Allende was a socialist dirtbag.
I'm stuck in an airport in rural Montana, and the wifi is spotty.
Nobody can tell me the score of the Cal game?
26-7
Thank you. You're my only true friend here.
Wot?
Calgary doesn't play tonight. They play in the Grey Cup TOMORROW. So enjoy rural Montana.
How could one NOT enjoy rural Montana?
I made the mistake of listening to one of the CBC's 10-minute news bulletins yesterday. After the encomium to Castro, the big deal was the there was an official Grey Cup event at a gay bar.
26-7 Cal.
You're also my friend.
You know who ISN'T? A certain commenter who lives in rural Montana.
Was it that time you two shared a tent?
He had a tent in his pants, I declined.
What part of MT? It's like a fucking country. Only with no people. My sister lives near Bozeman now, formerly near Missoula. That is truly some wild fucking country.
I'm not in Montana. I'm on my couch. This was my last chance to pull this, and Fd'A hates it.
You're sick dude, you're sick!
And I'll be back at it next August. I'm assuming a bowl game is out of the question.
You going to Antarctica, or what? They have the Internet's there too, I think.
Cal's trying to lose, but ucla's doing a better job of it.
Falafel has a cannon pointed in the wrong direction. Or whatever that dude's name is.
I kept hearing it as 'faithful', in spite of reading it on his jersey.
Cal did the same thing when Joe Ayoob was QB in 2005-06.
You get some vowels and consonants in the wrong order, and people think of 9/11.
I think I can speak for all rural Montana commenters, Playa. All love you.
Castro was a fucking dictator. End of story.
You know who else was a dictator?
El Presidente Cara de Papa
Dictaphone users?
Eric Cartman?
Handsome Dick Manitoba?
Nice!
Cincinnatus?
The Studebaker Standard Six?
Milburn Drysdale?
OK, this one may take the cake:
I didn't know it was possible to be this wrong about something. Fidel visited Malcolm X and collaborated with black communists, making him the best racial hero the world has ever seen.
He oppressed everyone equally?
Beautiful. Nobody tell them that they're wrong. They'll find out in 2018.
Between the election of Trump and death of Castro, we're seeing the complete meltdown of progressivism.
Man oh man the retardation I've witnessed since November 8 is astonishing.
Bullshit.
The world's greatest racial hero was Sikke Van der Veer.
"...Fidel Castro was the most dedicated and powerful proponent of racial justice the world has ever known..."
That founding member of the VRWC hastens to disagree:
(the NYT won't let you link; search NYT, Roberto Zurbano, 3/23/13
Until that time, blacks couldn't 'sleep in a hotel'.
Howell is full of shit.
"Eileen Murphy, a spokeswoman for The Times, said the editor stood by the article's preparation.
"We worked very hard to ensure that the wording in the piece was translated properly and accurately reflected the writer's point of view," she said in a statement. "There were numerous versions of the piece sent back and forth, and in the end, Mr. Zurbano and our contact for him (who speaks fluent English) signed off on the final version."
I don't believe a single word she says.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04.....s-job.html
How'd you do that, Rufus? I tried copy/paste and the instant I did, I got another story totally irrelevant to the point.
Eldridge Cleaver cited racism in Cuba for his move to Algeria. The American Left immediately proclaimed the message as a false plant by the CIA, then forgot about the accusation when Eldridge Cleaver showed up in Algeria.
Fun fact, Batista was a genuine Cubango of mixed racial heritage, including African, so by American profssive's one-drop rule he was a black president. Deposed by Castro, the child of white Galician (white) colonialists.
"El Presidente" of Tropico still lives, however.
I woke up this morning and Castro was still dead. Excellent.
I wish he could be deader.
He lives on in the hearts of evil men. I'll celebrate when they are dead, too.
How'd Tokyo deal with the snow?
Gone already. We survived the 5cm onslaught.
I had no idea Tokyo was so similar to DC.
"Gone already. We survived the 5cm onslaught."
Given that I'm 'multi-metric' I read that as 50mm and see it as, oh, 2". In the hilly parts of the US Midwest where I grew up, that meant even the school bus drivers said 'School today!'
During my stay in Oklahoma (a place so bad that we gave it to the Amerinds, until oil was discovered), I was amazed at how many days school was cancelled due to weather. It didn't even snow much. It was just cold. And not tundra/MN cold, still above freezing although i grant the humidity makes the cold colder than in a dry clime like Denver.
The reason(drink!) given was because, since OK is so hot in the summer, the kids didn't have the right clothes/jackets for cold weather.
I'm like, wot? It was this cold last winter, it'll be this cold next winter, i bought a coat, you should, too.
The most embarrassing and awful part of it all is that we are *allied* with most of these "leaders". I hope that Trump kicks them all to the curb.
Socialism should die with Castro:
http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/26/.....index.html
"Socialism" as a word may die, but the idea of using force to steal from others is a lot stickier.
Sad but true.
The oldest and simplest dilemma of human civilization: How to ensure that sure nobody is taking stuff that belongs to somebody else.
"...but the idea of using force to steal from others is a lot stickier..."
As long as there are moral cripples who think mommy should care for them, there will be people willing to pay others to steal from those who produce wealth.
Tony, commie-kid, etc, are not merely 'misguided'; they are truly evil and willing to kill others so they can 'enjoy' themselves while claiming we are 'selfish'.
Castro "and I thought Cuba was hot!"
Perfect
It's storming and on the cusp of dropping below 50F here for the first time in I don't know how long.
Time to take my 8 year old swimming and give him a chance to prove that he's Scandinavian.
If he uses a medical device to analyze a bird then he's Scandinavian.
Why didn't the whistleblower go outside in the winter?
He was Snowden.

I had an awning made for the deck off the bedroom, pulled VERY tight to make the rain audible; looking forward to it later this evening.
Looks like you're gonna get your wish for the next 2 hours or more.
NPR was running the BBC "tribute". It was predictable leftist fellatio of a dead Marxist dickbag.
Tomorrow's Miami Herald front page: Short, sweet, and beautiful. Going to have to pick up a copy of some dead tree media for once.
Can you please find out how I (we?) can get a copy?
I wouldn't have a clue. Willing to bet that the Herald will have "commemorative" copies for sale on their website at some point.
They're still partying in Little Havana btw.
Jesus, Sevo. You have the intertoobs. Go to the website. If they don't have a ready made link, email their customer service or marketing department. Or shit, place an ad on the Miami Craigslist: somebody will gladly mail you a newspaper for twenty bucks.
Sheesh
The Miami Herald's Castro obituary was the best piece of print journalism I've read this year.
Of course it's probably been in the can since at least 2006.
Old school newspapers still own the art of the obituary. This is the fucking gold standard (best print-piece I can recall from last year).
I'll be sure to post something here when I'm dead.
I already have. And I'm still alive.
That is a fantastic story about Mr. Bell, SIV. For some reason, it dovetails in my mind with what we later learned about J sub D's final days. It's given me a lot to think about.
Thank you very much for sharing that.
I like it because it humanized the civil servants. I had a tear in my eye as I read about the dedicated low-level bureaucrats slaving away in the "what we do together" mines. The late Mr. Bell was central to the story but his life and remains were hardly the whole of it. The reporter deserves every award in journalism. I last read it last year and remain in awe.
Written by Reason's own Glenn Garvin. Good find, SIV.
It's a long piece and worth every word. Fidel Castro is partially credited with the JFK assassination and the defeat of Carter and Gore.
AFAIK, it's been in the can for at least two decades, and they've been updating it as time went on.
The obit under Garvin's byline is credited at the bottom to 6 or 7 reporters. 4 or 5 of whom no longer work for the Miami Herald.
Hillary is joining Stein in demanding recounts.
I thought she was conceded and was 'horrified' when Trump said he wouldn't do so during the debate.
HORRIFIED.

Interesting fun on slashdot. Bunch of people responded to a post of mine with quotes of 99.7% literacy. I responded to two of them with laughs that only gullible fools believe any such statistic like that.
Others had similar knee jerk defenses of Fidel's humanity. The health system was a natural topic. One response got it half right, that Cuban health care under Batista may have been good, but it was segregated by wealth so the poor didn't get much. But that's all he got right -- said Castro expanded health care to everyone. Ha! I've read too many horror stories of Cuban health care, where patients have to bring in their own sheets, pillows, toilet paper, and even light bulbs (I wonder if they are allowed to take them back when they leave?).
I can understand disliking something so much for so long as to believe everything bad about it and everything good about its opposite (such as Michael Moore films after you've grown tired of Bush II lies about Iraq and Afghanistan). I'm sure Cuba, the USSR, and heck, even NK, must do some things right, even if it's just better street markings or elevator buttons.
But to believe 99.7%? If ANY US statistic were reported like that, everybody would laugh. It just doesn't pass the smell test. And once you realize how suspect that one statistic is, you've got to think a second or two before accepting any further stats from the same source.
Proggies reaffirm their naivete and gullibility every time they say anything.
I doubt Cuba has a higher lit. rate than S. Korea or Japan.
I have no idea what Cuba's literacy rate is, and the gov't twits in Habana don't either.
They can't get people transportation from one side of the island to the other outside of 'leaning' on car owners to pick up random hitch-hikers, and yet we're to believe those same twits have any idea how many of their 'peasants' can read?
When someone makes that claim, make them cite a source, and that can't be the UN-to-Cuban gov't bullshit. A real source.
Here is a guess: It is documented through the schools. If the teacher says all the kids can read, then they can read. If the teacher says any cannot, then they get a new career in the sugar fields.
Mao used similar zero defect accounting methods for steel production and food during the Great Leap Forward.
And JB offers yet another bogus source just below.
Repeat: You claim X literacy? Prove it.
It's bogus sources all the way down, bruddah.
UNESCO lists Cuba as having a 99.7% literacy rate. First world countries aren't on the list.
If you want to know how reliable that list is, it lists North Korea as having a 100% literacy rate.
That propaganda ain't gonna read itself.
"If you want to know how reliable that list is, it lists North Korea as having a 100% literacy rate."
Thank you.
Before that slimy hag pushed O-care up our butts, I spent time researching the source for the claims that the US medical care was rated far below Trashcanistan's socialized care.
It is not easy, given that web searches are driven by popularity and there are many people who hope for free shit. If you kept looking, you were finally rewarded with the information that they were UNESCO ratings and one of the strongest criteria had to do with the 'socialization' of the health care; regardless of the outcome(s), if it wasn't 'free' to all takers, it was a failure.
I'm not surprised that the literacy rate is equally bogus.
I used to pretty much ignore health statistics on the grounds that different countries have different systems, different organizations, different expectations, and it was pointless to try comparing them. I read one article about the different infant mortality rates which really confirmed that view, and also disgusted me at having not thought of the lengths people would go to to cook the books.
First, Communist countries mostly, but no doubt other dictatorships, count still births as abortions, even to the point of including any deaths in the first few days. Sort of like the old days when children weren't named and baptized until they'd lived for a few days. But the Communists also force abortions even just before delivery if there is even a hint of something wrong, of course depending on the country, doctor, hospital, etc. I think abortions should be entirely up to the mother, so my disgust is probably different from others.
Second, supposedly one of the reasons for the high US infant mortality rate is because the US tries to save more and younger premature babies, who die more often than full term babies. If you measured infant mortality only of full term babies, the US came out at or near the top, but most countries don't differentiate between premature and full term.
Not going to get into it tonight, but thanks for the additional caveats regarding med stats. They are at least as poorly 'equal' as "unemployment".
In France, for example, if you 'looked for a job' over the last X time, you are 'employed'.
And in the US, if you gave up and stopped looking for a job, you're no longer included in the unemployment rates.
Fun with numbers!
And in the US, if you gave up and stopped looking for a job, you're no longer included in the unemployment rates.
To put a finer point on that, if you stopped reporting that you have applied for jobs, you no longer count as unemployed.
The way that is tracked is when you report your job seeking for the purposes of receiving unemployment benefits. When you stop reporting, for any reason, including being unemployed past the duration of unemployment benefits, drop you from the unemployed statistic.
However, you do not get added as employed under the workforce utilization numbers. Yet.
infant mortality is not something you compare developed nations by. its purely an "undeveloped nation" metric. yes, the US rate is higher than other developed nations, but for structural reasons like you point out.
if you want to compare overall health type things, look at avg lifespan, leading causes of death,
I participate in internet forums that don't have a 100% literacy rate.
Unpossible!
/. ? I honed my troll-game there back in the late 20th century.
R.I.P Mario. If you were alive on this dat you would be swigging off a bottle of Rum, and dancing in the street.
Mario was a 80 year old Cuban boxer I used to work with. Tough little old bastard. One day I had to hold him back from beating the shit out of some 20 year old for wearing a CHE Tee-Shirt.
Mario sounds like someone I would have liked to have known. RIP
Yes. As I said at the top of the thread, it's times like this that make me wish that I believed in an afterlife.
If I'm wrong, then Mario is smiling. I hope I'm wrong, but it doesn't matter: as long as you remember Mario, then some part of him lives on in you, and you can both rejoice that this vile human is no longer able to inflict any more evil on the world.
There WERE 666 comments, I have saved us all /thanks
Whew, that was close. Thanks, man.
OK, let's sum up:
1) "100% literacy!"
A claim made by the Cuban government absent any evidence whatsoever, and highly suspect given the government's hope for legitimacy and the lack of evidence.
2) " Free Medical Care!"
Yes, if you can find it, medical care, it would be free, but there isn't much available.
3) "He's better than Bautista!"
Low as that bar is, it's yet to be shown to be true.
Fidel, take your pathetic brother with you and feed worms.
LIBRE CUBA !!!!
Someone famous said once that it's better to have a money-grubbing tyrant than an ideological one, because you can predict what the money grubber wants, and he may even leave the economy alone to some extent to get more taxes. But there's no predicting the ideological tyrant, who will probably get irate just for looking at him wrong or insulting him.
I doubt Batista was worse than Castro for just that reason. Leave Batista alone, he'd probably leave you alone, as long as he got his cut. But Castro hunted down people just to purify society.
Castro's ideological tests remind me very much of Hitler hating Jews and Slaves to the extent of wasting his military forces on genocide, even against Ukrainian partisans who were trying to hep the Germans beat the Soviets. The idea of wasting your own resources to destroy additional helpful resources just boggles my mind.
I think you're thinking of CS Lewis... lemme Google... hold on... ah, here:
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals."
Yea, that's it. Thanks!
The Man Morose in a Field on Fucking Thanks Day
i drove this vehicle down the road
and saw a man stumbling across a
blackish brown span surrounded by
immense loneliness
his shirt was a slight edge under
the boring fucking everyday forgotten
nothing of a jacket scratched from denim trees
but the field under that moment
spans acres and acres of time
destruction and even if you pressed
your shoes into the pedal your
car would not speed up because
the dirt of his loneliness
made the engine of travel
thicken and sleep
so i slowed and within a sun's twinkle of notices
fell prey to the kicking stumbling man
in the middle of a void of turnt clods and brownian
mods all intent to spackle odd stretchy bullshit
onto heart billboards of the lost
the day was gray and slow
and the morose man in the field sent pain across
acres of realities I fucking had no desire to
remain affected by but so it is with sadness...
You know, AC, we all like your verse. It would also be cool if sometimes you would post when you weren't tripping, so we could get to know the real AC.
Haven't seen you in a bit; everything cool in your world?
AC can never be "known" or "personified." AC must be passed on through the generations. AC will be commenting on the interwebs in 2550.

What the fuck is wrong with so many fucking people? Fidel was one of the worst humans alive in the 20th Century. The fact that anyone, anyone defends him in inexcusable.
You are that much of a useless fucking idiot that you believe buzzwords like "free healthcare", "free education", "literacy rate" or "infant mortality rate", or that they just couldn't get buy without trading with us.
Go Fuck Yourselves, you useless pieces of shit. You enable poverty, enable slavery, and enable misery. You should be thanking your lucky stars every god damned day you weren't born in Cuba.
You are going to have to come to terms with the fact that about half of the human race are just evil Steve.
I generally go with "evil" over "stupid" - for example, every politician listed above - but in this case I sincerely believe that the great masses of people praising the fucker, outside of Cuba and outside the hardcore believers, are simply too stupid to know any better.
And that is the only benefit of the doubt you'll get out of me this year.
Morals can be bought with other people's money.
It's how I feel. Every time you praise him you dishonour the people he impoverished, imprisoned, tortured and killed.
The disconnect between morality and intellectualism is ghastly and astonishing.
It's shame and evil personified.
Read some comments in Globe and Mail about Trudeau's Castro comments. About 90% negative. I think there are a lot people up there who really hate him. Not just hate, but utter contempt.
You have no idea how deep it runs, there are liberals pining for the Harper years, at least in Ontario.
"Pining" in Canada means someone "new" holding a temporary seat until the next Liberal that lies enough takes over again.
Pretty much.
It got there pretty fast. He got a lot of 'I'm tired of Harper' votes and those people are likely wondering what the fuck is wrong with this guy and the Liberals who act like it's amateur hour in Parliament. I watch them in action and never seen such an unrefined bunch of emotional buffoons.
And when you challenge them they act like 'why are you being so mean?'
I do hold them in contempt.
It's also way harder for progressives to praise Cuba and Castro in Canada than in the United States because a great deal of Canadians have actually gone on vacation in Cuba. And even if you stick to the areas clearly designed for tourists you know something is up. Travel out of those areas and you see the poverty firsthand. Very hard to sell the 'Castro improved Cuba' narrative when people have seen it with their own eyes.
Exatly. I'm one of those Canadians.
I was disgusted having given my money to that douchebag asshole.
The problem is, all naive romantics saw was the great spirit of the Cuban people (which is true). But not being well-hearsed in human nature and Italian history and the theory that 'la dolce vita' also masks deep sorrow or American culture with blacks and the birth of the blues, all they choose to see is 'they're happier than us! Free stuff! What's the problem?"
A true hero, tireless fighter against colonialism, capitalism and white supremacy. El Comandante, you will be missed.
Sarcasm I hope.
Yeah, he will be missed like I miss that wad of toilet paper I wiped my ass with an hour ago.
AlterNet writers whines about 'double standard' of offering some praise for Chile's progress under Pinochet while castigating Castro
Pinochet was a bastard. Castro was a bastard. Yet amazingly the bastard who had the good economic sense to liberalize his country's economy left a more positive legacy in the long-term.
Chile is South America's wealthiest, most stable and prosperous country. Cuba is an open-air prison of poverty and oppression. You tell me what that says about capitalism versus socialism.
Yet, my Chilean friend talks as if Chile's success is due to socialism. Never does she mention Pinochet's economic policies. It's all America interfered, Allende, and Chile is socialist.
"Like it or not, Mr. Pinochet had something to do with this success. To the dismay of every economic minister in Latin America, he introduced the free-market policies that produced the Chilean economic miracle -- and that not even Allende's socialist successors have dared reverse. He also accepted a transition to democracy, stepping down peacefully in 1990 after losing a referendum."
It isn't just the economics. Pinochet also held a referendum and stepped down after he lost it. That latter part isn't completely unrelated to our support. He didn't hold the referendum because he was a democratic idealist. He didn't respect the results out of the goodness of his heart. Part of the reason he did both was--because he was afraid of losing American support.
There's a similar dynamic with Israel today. Some people imagine that if the United States cut off support for Israel, then Israel would stop mistreating the Palestinians and they would all live Happily ever after. The truth is that if we had cut off support for Israel a long time ago, Israel would have driven the Palestinians into the sea. Israel restrains itself for fear of losing our support--and so did Pinochet.
Jean Kirkpatrick was right.
You can defend Pinochet as less awful than Castro without promoting either one as anything other than awful, anyway, and if the economic reforms Pinochet introduced were better than Castro's, then that's what they were--even if Pinochet was a vicious dictator.
Hayek also argued that an authoritarian political system combined with a liberalized economy does not last long and is likely to transition into a better political system once the strongman either dies or is overthrown. An authoritarian political system with an authoritarian economic system, however, grants the political system further power and a means to continue on.
PRC seems to prove him wrong. They've had a fairly liberal economy for several decades and the Chicomms are as strong as ever.
A few years ago a Chinese graduate student told me that she did not want to stay in the US after getting her degree because the taxes here are too high and complicated.
But haven't they liberalized their economy just recently? Not under chairman Mao. So maybe when the current leaders die off?
Although I am skeptical of Hayek's hypothesis, you must be careful not to confuse trends with absolute values. The PRC has improved substantially over the past few decades in terms of economic freedom, but China is nonetheless ranked 144 on the Heritage Foundation economic freedom index and 113 on the Fraser Institute index (c.f. 11 and 16 for the US).
As much as I despise the horrid US tax code, the opportunities for high earners to get absolutely boned both through the progressive tax system as well as shakedowns is pretty unattractive. This person may have other .. "options" shall we say. I'd bet $10 that student is also a Party member or has family in the Party. The lack of functional rule of law, while better than it was before, is still unattractive.
Yeah. I don't see any hypocrisy in saying "if you're going to have a dictator who murders his opponents, it's better if he also supports an economic system that creates prosperity."
I'm a day late to this party but I can still be sick.
I truly hope that was parody.
While Jerry Sandusky was a controversial figure, few can doubt his contributions to youth sports.
From the article linked above, The Last Communist City:
Cuba has a maximum wage?$20 a month for almost every job in the country. (Professionals such as doctors and lawyers can make a whopping $10 extra a month.) Sure, Cubans get "free" health care and education, but as Cuban exile and Yale historian Carlos Eire says, "All slave owners need to keep their slaves healthy and ensure that they have the skills to perform their tasks."
I remember visiting East Germany a couple times in the 80s. You were required to convert some Deutschmarks into their funny money in order to get in (gee, I wonder why?). Then you spent the weekend figuring out how to spend it on the crap merchandise on offer. Everything was cheap but there wasn't anything you wanted to buy. And everybody knew the score and freely talked about it with us Wessis. They just didn't talk with each other.
And then I think how East Germany was a fucking paradise compared to Cuba.
I thought they had really awesome optics and mustard? Doesn't matter if you are not into either.
They also had the Stasi, which made the Gestapo look like Andy Griffith.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stasi
I don't know if there was any Cuban equivalent.
Yes there was. Plus, Cuban intelligence was busy helping The Weather Underground here in the 1970's and 80's, not sure if they ever stopped.
Do you think western Liberals get the irony of shrieking about the incoming fascist authoritarianism of Trump and threats to the press...etc, while simultaneously praising someone who denied any of those freedoms to his own people? I wonder if it ever hits them.
The entire basis of leftist ideology is a failure. Therefore, the only thing that leftists have now is delusion and identity politics. No matter how many times they fail and how much misery they cause, they still refuse to admit that they've been wrong all along. The next time it will work because they'll have the right people in charge, just like all the other next times.
Socialism and bad luck
Don't forget Obumbles used that line completely unaware of what he was saying. When his policies stalled any recovery from the recession he actually said on national television "We have had a run of bad luck".

My favorite is the healtcare BS. I would like to introduce them to my cousin, who was a doctor in Cuba. He escaped through Colombia while in Venezuela. He has some nice stories to tell about the "great" Cuban healthcare system. Especially his most recent experience of being detained in Cuba after he stupidly went back to see his Wife's mother, who was on her deathbed. "Silly Rabbit, don't you know that that education you have was due to "The Revolution". It doesn't belong to you. You owe everything to them, so you belong to them."
He went back to Cuba? Good grief, that was dumb. What did he think was going to happen?
For Pearl Slaghoople no less.
I know a few guys who would risk a lot to see their mother-in-law die.
*slow clap*
Was your cousin sort of like a slave made to work? Do you get a choice to become a doctor in cuba?
They don't do it for the money.
He's just like the successful business person who "didn't build that" because "somebody else built that".

Spoiler:
Guy claims Russkis got what they wanted, and it wasn't that hag's fault she lost! No sir!
Commie writes for commie rag. Exactly what I would expect.
"I'll have what he's having."
They were already geared up to promote Hillary's war against the Red Terror. Can't let an outline go to waste.
Well, the Russians were dancing in the street when Hillary lost, but then so was I.
SOUTH AMERICA!
With as much dirt as Putin had on Hillary, I question whether there was a bad result in it for him.
"With as much dirt as Putin had on Hillary,.."
It is unimaginable to me that he Kremlin does not have 100% of what she had on her closet server; no way they and every half-way competent government on earth didn't get that.
All he had to do is release, oh, two days' worth of content and she'd have sunk faster than the Edmund Fitzgerald.
They used clintonemail.com as their domain name. That had to be discovered within hours of going online.
It's like using your username as your password.
I mean, if they wanted to keep it secret to your inner circle, at least set up your domain as ijk1234mnop.com or something so the outside world at least has a speed bump in finding it. It's not like you're worried about brand name recognition or driving web traffic.
"They used clintonemail.com as their domain name."
And her birthday's a state secret, right?
I think the assumption that she had something on the server that could sink her is a bit silly. She may have used it for personal business, but her supporters AND detractors let that go. So, her personal business then? Doubt she's stupid enough to put an actual smoking gun in writing on a email server she created to hide her dealings.
No, she kept the real dirt to herself, the Russians don't have it, and what they do have isn't a gamebreaker of any kind.
"She may have used it for personal business"
Should read "government business"
even talking about this is belaboring it, since its deader than dillinger at this point....
...but there was no need for any "dirt" for the use of the server to be a crime. It was a willful attempt to evade open records laws and FOIA requests. in fact, pretending that they needed to "find evidence" in her email in order to prosecute her was the first of like 100 head-fakes by the FBI while they methodically cleaned up her mess and immunized anyone who might be able to make incriminating statements.
Yes. It was disgraceful. I am sure they did that secure in the thought that she would win. I bet they are all pissing their pants now.
"..but there was no need for any "dirt" for the use of the server to be a crime. "
True and beside the point, at least the one I was making.
The only thing the Russians could have had that would matter IS dirt.
The *russians*?
who gives a flying fuck about the russians?
The people having the conversation you were replying to.
well, whatever floats your boat.
This. If the Russians had clinton's emails (I think they likely do) then they would most likely would prefer to have her as Prez... That way in any political conflict they could pull out some embarrasing or criminal emails in order to get the agreement THEY want. Trump is basically bulletproof... any shit they could have on him he'd just deny, bluster and threaten....
Sting?
(You weren't expecting the answer to be "Hitler", were you?)
"The only thing the Russians could have had that would matter IS dirt."
Disagreed.
They simply had to show they hacked it by posting some minimal content; THAT would have convinced everyone but the worst Hillbot that she fucked up.
I doubt it, they pretty much already know this based on the FBI Investigation. It would vindicate everyone who said she did it, but I doubt it would convince anyone who isn't already convinced.
But, it's a hypothetical we'll never have an answer for.
Russia doesn't need the smoking gun to be on that email server. They just need it as a jumping off point to find the smoking gun. It's like having a map that shows you where all the bodies are buried.
And I, for one, am not going to assume that Hillary is too smart to screw anything up. There were plenty of damning emails in what they didn't manage to delete. The server was already filled with information that Hillary didn't want the American public to ever see. Of that material, we only got access to a small portion of what she considered the least damaging.
"Russia doesn't need the smoking gun to be on that email server. They just need it as a jumping off point to find the smoking gun. "
I disagree, they need something with actual teeth, another investigation would have been seen as more politics, which is what a "jumping off point" would have gotten them.
"And I, for one, am not going to assume that Hillary is too smart to screw anything up"
No one said that. Look at what's been released. That's what I'm going on.
(should have read further)
Disagreed.
They simply had to show they hacked it by posting some minimal content; THAT would have convinced everyone but the worst Hillbot that she fucked up.
As I said previously, people already know, it was insecure. Showing that probably doesn't convince too many undecideds.
Your thought process seems to be entirely about electoral politics, and the standard line seems to be that the emails didn't matter much despite Hillary losing.
My point was about Putin having leverage on Hillary. The point of which would be to use the info to force concessions.
The skies of November turn gloomy indeed.
I was talking to a Hillary supporter on this issue yesterday. I asked her if the Drudge Report is Russian propaganda just because they happen to publish information that Putin benefits from (assuming FTSOA he benefits from Trump), doesn't that mean that CNN is Democrat propaganda when they publish information that the Democrats benefit from? She said that it's not the same thing because CNN isn't foreign.
This is somebody who believes in hardcore open borders, BTW. All hail the new xenophobes.
Fake news, anyone?
In the 60s and 70s, I used to listen to shortwave broadcasts as a hobby, and became somewhat of a connoisseur of state propaganda. Seriously, today's mainstream press reminds me of the old Radio Moscow and Radio Bucharest without the Slavic accents.
I used to listen to that jive too, in the early 1980s. My favorite that I still recall is how Soviets might eat less meat on average than those in the West, it is distributed more efficiently.
I don't know what he was thinking. We told him that would happen. By some miracle they ended up letting him go but they kept him there for 3 months.
Some miracle like this?

"Exscape... Exscape... Exscape..."
Was it here that I was talking about the way Castro treated LGBT?
"[W]e would never come to believe that a homosexual could embody the conditions and requirements of conduct that would enable us to consider him a true Revolutionary, a true Communist militant. A deviation of that nature clashes with the concept we have of what a militant Communist must be.[25]"
----Fidel Castro
"Cuban gay writer Reinaldo Arenas wrote, "[T]he decade of the sixties ... was precisely when all the new laws against homosexuals came into being, when the persecution started and concentration camps were opened, when the sexual act became taboo while the 'new man' was being proclaimed and masculinity exalted."[28] LGBT persons were imprisoned frequently, particularly effeminate males, without charge or trial, and confined to forced labor camps."
"Camps of forced labour were instituted with all speed to "correct" such deviations ... Verbal and physical mistreatment, shaved heads, work from dawn to dusk, hammocks, dirt floors, scarce food ... The camps became increasingly crowded as the methods of arrest became more expedient ...[29]"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Cuba
The Cuban Constitution states that marriage is between a man and a woman. There are no civil unions.
Discrimination against LGBT in public education, housing, etc. is perfectly legal.
From an LGBT perspective, progressives defending Castro should be indefensible.
Pinkos are nothing is not masters at re-writing history. I am sure this will all be whitewashed, shitcanned, and thrown down the memory hole. Castro was a champion of social justice.
"We don't worry about the future. We know what the future is. Here in the Soviet Union it is the past that is always changing." - old soviet joke
Well, LGBT are regarded by the left as special snowflakes. However, some special snowflakes are more special than others. The left will in no time at all cast out the LGBTs in favor of radical Islam. That's already starting to happen. The left have doomed themselves through identity politics and there is no way back for them. Watch them start threatening violence after Jill Stein's recount BS achieves the obvious results. The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming! LMAO, behold the face of desperation.
They aren't threatening violence.
Yeah, you get more than a handful of them out on the street and the violence is eventual.
What I don't get is what do they hope to gain from this? Of course they've already driven out the productive class, they're working hard to drive out the "white" class, so... what do I know. Maybe they have some tricknology that allows them to win by assembling ever smaller interest groups against all logic.
My understanding of developmental psychology has it that when infants are born, it takes them a while to realize that the woman they hate and scream for when they're hungry, etc. is the same woman they love when she's feeding them.
That's where Stewie from Family Guy comes from--he loves Lois, but he also wants to kill her.
I think the progressives are like that with the white, blue collar, middle class. They love those people so--why, they're the very people progressives are fighting for! They also hate their guts.
Another way to look at it is that the progressives love an idealized version of what a good, stupid worker is supposed to be. That idealized version is almost something like the noble savage from back in the days of British imperialism. The ideal version of the white, blue collar, middle class needs good, progressive government to protect them from the corporations that exploit them.
When the white, blue collar, middle class, in reality, fails to live up to that idealized version of what progressives think they're supposed to be, the progressives just hate them for it. You stupid rednecks! Why can't you be the Merry Olde victims of capitalism you're supposed to be? Think for yourselves? You can't think for yourselves!!!
Socialism and radical Islam have both come to the same conclusion in regards to Western society, in regards to capitalism and secularism respectively; that is, they can't possibility compete with it.
Sayyid Qutb understood this after visiting the West, members of the Frankfurt school figured it out. For their systems to have any chance of 'success' they need to end the system that completely delegitimizes them. It's a marriage of convenience.
That sums it up nicely John.
I think the progressives' affinity for Castro and Muslims has more to do with their hatred of "rednecks" more than anything else.
One more validation that Trump is the right choice to lead a country. I would be embarrassed by those other statements if I lived in the same country as these "leaders".

Krugnuts has already jumped aboard the blame Russia train. He's now just another conspiracy theory nut. Fake news is what I think you call it.
Haha i consider him a parody writer....mocking liberal economics by making himself a caricature
Krugman was into fake news before it was cool.
"Even Jews!"
NOOOOO!!!!!
Yeah, I don't get the reason why Jews in particular are supposed to have a problem with Trump. Women and Hispanics maybe (though the latter didn't pan out as expected).
I have no doubt in my mind that Krugman would have been a great spinster for the Nazis.
His whole faux-intellectual shtick points to the sort of 'conscience' that would turn on the Jews on a dime if it meant him getting invited to the cocktail parties and being a good (academic) soldier for his masters.
It's a bloodless civil war I tell you and I have decided where the lines are drawn now.
See i wonder if for Krugman it is all an act.
This "i am smarter then everyone else!" and then he always ends up being wrong making a mockery of his stated position. Like a court jester if you will
It's overdone. The left is teeming with these kinds of morons.
I have no doubt in my mind that Krugman would have been a great spinster for the Nazis.
Would have been? Still is!
I thought you had to be a woman to be a spinster.
The term of art is spinmeister.
Those crafty Jews sure are unpredictable.
"How dare (((those people))) leave the plantation!"
This one has to be my favorite though. Not only does it show his inability to fit ideas into tweet-length, but the irony that with one word replacement ("foundation" for "business"), this could equally well fit a Clinton presidency, and with a much stronger track record to back it up.

We're about to enter, or may already have entered, an era of corrupt governance unprecedented in U.S. history. What does it mean? 1/
Important to realize that the money stolen by the first family is a minor issue; $10 billion, say, skimmed off the top is rounding error 2/
What matters much more is the distortion of policy in directions that can be monetized. Gratuitous private investors in infrastructure 3/
is just the start. Expect to see lots of privatization and a general shift from transparent to murky so that favors can be traded 4/
And think about the pro-tyrant bias of foreign policy. Democratic regimes -- say, in Europe -- are by their own rules unable to offer 5/
de facto personal bribes to the U.S. president. Putin's Russia or, for that matter, Xi's China, will be fine with sending huge business 6/
to the profiteer-in-chief. And that will cause a tilt of U.S. policy toward authoritarian regimes. Stay alert 7/
Yet he and his ilk slobber all over Fidel castro for caring for his people
What matters much more is the distortion of policy in directions that can be monetized.
Uh, would that include lavishly funded green energy infrastructure?

Interesting article over at the Wall Street Journal about Peak Oil . . . Demand.
Seems that the oil companies are trying to figure out what they'll do now that we've either hit peak demand or peak demand is coming.
"Oil Industry Anticipates Day of Reckoning"
http://www.wsj.com/articles/oi.....1480248012
One word: "plastics". There's a great future in plastics.
Settle a multiple-hundreds-of-billions-of-dollars class-action lawsuit with the government in exchange for protection from any competition and jack up the taxes on their product by 1,000%?
It's more about shifting to the production of petrochemicals and plastics.
And I think Al Gore's lawsuit consortium may be in for some rough sailing with the voters.
The voters were on board with cigarettes causing cancer. Artificially inflating the price of oil? Not so much.
"Plastics" is a code word for the sex toy industry, right?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dug-G9xVdVs
I'm not sure the sex toy industry can use that much oil, and I'm not sure fossil fuels are the oil to go with in that situation.

Apparently, Castro's Cuba has big problems with racism, too.
"According to anthropologists dispatched by the European Union, racism in Cuban is systemic and institutional.[1] Black people are systematically excluded from positions in tourism-related jobs, where they could earn tips in hard currencies.[1] According to the EU study, black people are relegated to poor housing, were excluded from managerial positions, received the lowest remittances from relatives abroad, and were five times more likely to be imprisoned. Blacks also complained of suffering the longest waits in healthcare.[1]
. . . . "There is an unstated threat, blacks in Cuba know that whenever you raise race in Cuba, you go to jail. Therefore the struggle in Cuba is different. There cannot be a civil rights movement. You will have instantly 10,000 black people dead".[11]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_Cuba
Again, progressives defending Castro's Cuba is indefensible from a social justice warrior perspective.
It's indefensible from a LGBT rights perspective, and it's indefensible from the perspective of racial equality.
Whatever affinity they have for Castro is about their hatred of fellow Americans who despise Castro. It's posturing.
I mentioned this earlier in one of the dead Castro posts. Eldridge Cleaver fled to Cuba, then fled Cuba for Algeria because of racism. The Left dubbed the communique a CIA plot, then immediately forgot about the plot when he showed up in Algeria.
Principals, not principles
Fellow marxists trump LGBT and blacks
Look Ken. Cut that shit out. I already told you that Castro was a champion of social justice.

Re: From the NYTimes: "Trump announced last week that he had named Mauricio Claver-Carone, a fierce critic of Mr. Obama's opening with Cuba who leads a pro-embargo political action committee, to his transition team for the Treasury Department. The move was seen as a signal that Mr. Trump is considering unraveling the web of regulations Mr. Obama has put in place to ease trade and commercial restrictions against Cuba."
Dear Reason commentariat: if Trump fucks up free trade with Cuba and decides to let Top Men decide what is best can we all organize a travel group to Havana in order to tell said Top Men to go fuck themselves. Email me at lionel_hutz@hushmail.com if you are interested.

It was a dog whistle for other fellow racists like him to congregate.
The gushing and ignorant reactions to Castro's death shouldn't be too surprising when one considers that leftists around the globe were willing to look past Hillary's grossly criminal behavior and considered her to be the most qualified candidate ever.
You insult me more than you know. To be accused of supporting a two-bit Lehman Brothers pol and Wall Street hack. Give me Fidel any day.

"Mr. Fillon's platform is more polarizing. He calls for deep spending cuts, loosening labor laws that protect workers, and tax breaks for business and the rich. I doubt Eddie would try to defend that. I have been reading lately about the CC being in a bit of a crisis. A great many catholics aren't all that happy about a commie pope.

"It is the communists, in all cases, that think like Christians. "
There is a very good reason that a chicken's tail is called 'the popes nose'.
And that ain't communism or Communism, Pope old buddy old pal. Anarchy is the ultimate democracy, the ultimate distributed decision making, the closest thing to a free market. It sure ain't socialism. Or does he think Christianity means those who work their ass off or are born with more brains are somehow not entitled to make decisions even for themselves?
Another black and white thinker. Crony capitalism sucks, therefore full blown Marxist Communist dictatorship is better.
Fuck off, slaver.
I just had a thought. A society where ONLY the poor weak and excluded made decisions, would in some ways be the most egalitarian ever, since as soon as the poor enriched themselves and the weak empowered themselves, they'd no longer be making decisions and go right back to being poor and weak. The excluded, of course, would be even worse off, since as soon as they were included in the decision making process, they'd have to be excluded again, before making any decisions. The churn would be impressive. "OOoh, look, my pay doubled!" and out the door and back to the bread line.
You could stick Pope John Paul II's skeleton on the Chair of St. Peter and he'd make a better Pope than this one.
"So the Pope said some things."
With this Pope, that sentence never gives me good vibes. Let me see what he said *this* time...

One could reasonably assume that the left's core problem with American violence in the Middle East is that the population doesn't vote blue and have adequately socialized schools.

Jill reminds me of the leader of the resistance.....yea she has it right that the current TOP MEN who run are country are dickheads, but yet she has her own aspirations of being a dictator.
Sounds about right. Still haven't seen the last movie.
Oh sorry i just spoiled it for you then lol
I remember hearing about the premise from someone who had read the books prior to the release of the first film. I was thinking, "Oh, so it's about children being forced to fight to the death for entertainment with an oppressive government as the backdrop, using the "bread and circuses" model to keep the populace in check? Sounds like a clever sci-fi premise to make young people think."
Then I realized that so much of the fanbase were young teens who wanted to be tributes and kill the shit out of other kids, or girls who latched onto the romance aspects and missed the horror of the whole situation. It left me wondering if the message was entirely too clever for them, or just very poorly delivered.
Yes, read all the books and saw all the movies. What the Democrats are currently working towards is a hunger games without the games. Just watch it, you'll get it.
Jill Stein is an idiot whose idiocy is beyond the scope of hunger games.
It's encouraging that our leftist overlords are catching a lot of shit for their reflexive paean-twits. They're so bubbled it doesn't even occur to them that lots of people don't actually worship murderous dictators.

So I wonder, since Hillary changed her mind about the recount, will Trump change his mind about investigating her?
I think some sort of venn diagram with a certain island in the overlap may prevent that from happening.
The recount is a fucking joke, so I doubt it will be pursued much longer. I just heard, though have not been able to confirm it yet, that the requirements have not been met for a recount in PA. IOW, game over. And this is going to make the Democrats look even worse than they already do.
California bar association considers banning the practice of law.
Oh, my mistake - the story said they were considering banning lawyers from screwing their clients and I just assumed. But you mean to tell me there's gotta be a rule specifically telling lawyers it's unethical to be having sex with your clients? That's just sad. Or really hilarious.

Also, my beef stew is smelling delicious. The dilemma is; should I put the stew on mashed potatoes, or should I put it over buttered bowtie pasta? A little parsley and green onion and parmesan?
Castro was a real dick and I'm glad he's dead. Hopefully his assface brother will follow him to the grave shortly, and the people of Cuba can have the sweet taste of liberty.
Depends. Do you feel like hot buttered biscuits, or garlic bread for pushing around the plate to get the last of the gravy?
We're doing grilled cheese sandwiches and turkey soup with rice, leeks, peppers, shallots and etc. I wanted to make ramen broth with the carcass but my husband is still fascinated by northern white people food, so turkey soup it was.
Turkey soup and grilled cheese on a Fall evening. Nice. I'm not a sentimental person, but I do get sentimental about crisp air, good food, and good company. Life should be as pleasant as a Dockers commercial.
I love leeks in a soup.
All of my turkey broth went to mexican rice. My kids ate 8 cups of prepared rice yesterday.
Turkey broth, achiotina, and guajillo paste.
None left for me.
I got a jar of artisanal leaf lard (I'm very disappointed the name of the rendered pig isn't on it). What do I do with that shit other than make a very pretentious pie crust?
I would go with the taters. I went pretty simple today. Just boiled up some eggs for some turkey salad on toast sandwiches. Works.
What kind of beef stew?
Shredded braised beef goes better over potatoes, chunkier beef works better over pasta.
Chunky beef. Also, my wife informed me she doesn't like stew over mashed potatoes. After 15 years, she tells me this? I think I'm gonna make "farfalle" and freeze the mashed potatoes.
The correct term is FARFALLE pasta.
/continues preparing breaded mushrooms.
I'm sorry, did you say FARFISA?
Why didn't you just cut the potatoes into small pieces & boil them w the rest? They can thicken the stew so effectively you don't need pasta or mashed anything.
Only crackers if done right in the first place.
I made some savory waffles this morning (regular waffle batter minus the sugar and with the addition of beer, sharp cheddar, and green onions).
They were awesome with a few fried eggs and a rare sirloin.

A travel writer visits Havana.
Tourists tip waiters, taxi drivers, tour guides, and chambermaids in hard currency, and to stave off a revolt from these people, the government lets them keep the additional money, so they're "rich" compared with everyone else. In fact, they're an elite class enjoying privileges?enough income to afford a cell phone, go out to restaurants and bars, log on to the Internet once in a while?that ordinary Cubans can't even dream of. I asked a few people how much chambermaids earn in tips, partly so that I would know how much to leave on my dresser and also to get an idea of just how crazy Cuban economics are. Supposedly, the maids get about $1 per day for each room. If they clean an average of 30 rooms a day and work five days a week, they'll bring in $600 a month?30 times what everyone else gets. "All animals are equal," George Orwell wrote in Animal Farm, his allegory of Stalinism, "but some animals are more equal than others." Only in the funhouse of a Communist country is the cleaning lady rich compared with the lawyer.

Sorry, campaign manager.
Either hire Romney, or don't. What is the point of airing all this dirty laundry?
She definately doesn't have Trump's knack for playing the game.
What is the point of airing all this dirty laundry?
Who knows? Nobody knows what's going on besides Trump and even he's got a pretty shaky grasp of the facts. Is he really actually considering Mitt or is he putting out a rumor that he'd consider Mitt if he'd grovel just in the assumption that Mitt'll grovel and that's really all he wants? Are these rumors coming from some faction within the Trump organization either pro- or anti-Mitt (or pro- or anti-establishment) and the rumors are designed to push the discussion in a given direction? Is the rumor of Mitt being considered a shibboleth of some sort just to identify who salutes that particular flag and who doesn't? How much of this speculation is just the media itself trying to make something out of nothing just because they've got air to fill? You'll drive yourself crazy if you pay attention to this stuff enough to wonder what it all might mean. It's all horseshit one way or another.
On the Celebrity Apprentice all-stars a couple of years ago, it came down to Penn Jillette vs. Clay Adkins. In the final interview in the season finale, Trump asked Penn to basically recant on camera all the bad things Penn had said about him in the past (which were pretty substantial). After Penn sort-of did say a bunch of nice things about Trump, he immediately got fired and Trump named Clay the winner. It was almost as if Trump had kept Penn around until the finale just for that moment.
That's what I think Trump is doing this time with Mitt as Penn and Rudy as Clay. Except it's a lot less funny because we're choosing a US Secy of State rather than Trump's spokesmodel.
Trace Adkins /Penn Sunday School
It was almost as if Trump had kept Penn around until the finale just for that moment."
Or maybe Trump is wanting to see if his underlings are willing to stand up to him are they gonna grovel like Penn did. ?
Stupid question: WTF was the point of that show? I've never seen it, and the idea of Penn walking on TV and asking Trump for a job doesn't make any sense to me.

"There's a lot of hard work to do and the first part is recognizing it," Trudeau said.
Trudeau then said that his wife, Sophie, had pulled him aside a few months ago and told him that it was great he was telling their daughter that she is equal to boys, but he also had to stress his attitudes to their two sons. so they "grow up to be a feminist, just like Dad."
This is our leader.
/hits Gong show gong.
"Of course you're equal to boys honey. Now Daddy has to give a speech at this mosque, and you have to go sit over here because you're inherently unequal."

I keep pointing out how popular this phrase ("work to do") is with the SJW set. Hillary was all about repeating this mantra.
Its utterly vacuous and self-complementary... because what are they talking about when they say, "work"? They mean, "Bitch on twitter" and "constantly nag everyone".
As though somehow that's akin to building the transcontinental railroad or something.
By "work," I believe they mean this.
At least I do.
I'd work overtime with any one of them.
Hey, that's the intercontinental railroad, you racist!
You'd think doctors could spell.
She's pretending to be an adult. So she calls herself Doctor Girl.
I was raised in a small community that was 99% white and full of corrupt asshole cops, and I was taught to avoid them at every opportunity. Do these people not realize that white trash exist?
The cops are white trash.
No, all white people are rich and privileged. The toothless dirt farmer in West Virginia, the laid-off factory worker in Michigan, the homeless methhead in San Francisco... They're all privileged.
That's why we need to give race-based advantages to oppressed black people (like Obama, Jay-Z, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson).
Someone needs to make some parody videos along the lines of
"How to Explain to People Who Are Always Trying Explain Things To People To Shut The Fuck Up And Mind Their Own Business"
Step 1 : don't spell it "priveledge" like the linked video does... correct spelling is totally white privilege.
/looks down on watch.
So. When do you reckon Castro enters hell and which historical asswipe figure will fuck Castro up the ass and rip him a new hole in hell?
/raises glass in approval. A cent'anni!
Shylock may have a pound of flesh for him.
You know, I kinda assumed his sort really do have a special place in Hell, a nice special place. Why would they be punished rather than rewarded for all the evil they've done?
Because Satan is an especially twisted fuck.
His former therapist is in my crochet Meetup group. And yeah, she has some stories.
Crochet Meetup group?! Now I'm thinking YOU are the especially twisted fuck
I don't go there for the poontang if that's what you mean. Being a substitute partner for Lamoz classes gets me plenty.
Pregnant chicks. That's something I could get into
"You know, I kinda assumed his sort really do have a special place in Hell, a nice special place. Why would they be punished rather than rewarded for all the evil they've done?"
Such a life is the inducement for an Earthly paradise.
The price is paid in eternity.
It is inconceivable to me that a life led thusly has no comeuppance without there be life after death.
Less we all be monsters.

Dalton Trumbo.

Castro, after dying, goes to Heaven's gates, and St. Peter tells him, "I don't care what the Pope said about you, here's no way you're entering here. Go to the other place."
So Castro goes down down down into Hell and meets the Devil. Castro being the kind of guy he is, he and the Devil get along pretty well, and soon they're smoking cigars and chatting like the old friends they are. Then Castro says, "Hey, I left my bags up at Heaven's gates."
And the Devil answers, "No problem, I'll send a couple of my boys up to get them."
So he dispatches a couple of demons. But when the demons arrive at Heaven's gates, St Peter is on his lunch break, and the bags aren't there. So the demons climb over the gates, sneaking into Heaven to try to find Castro's bags.
But a couple of angels see the two demons, and one of the angels complains to the other, "Castro has only been in Hell for a couple of hours now, and already we're getting refugees."
+1 votive lift
So, I just want to say. Good riddance, Fidel. Also, dear God, Canada's PM is a fucking moron. He makes Obama seem smart.
The only good part about Trudeau the Turd is that, by their own party by-laws, the Liberals have to have a convention and a leadership review within the first 18 months after the election. I bet my wife a bottle of Scotch and a night of unrestrained you-know-what that the Long Knives would be out in force for Junior during that convention. She's of the opinion that the party faithful would never jettison The Hair, whilst I take the view that he's served his purpose (kind of like SugarFree's "Vessel") and can be safely discarded, especially after the many gaffe-balls he's lobbed into the arena of public discourse since then.
Lessee, October 2015 until April/May 2017 ? a man can dream, can't he?
Do they have anybody competent to replace him, or did he purge all the competent people?
No, no purges ? the party itself is really being run from the backrooms, although Turd's initial Cabinet picks had the undeniable stench of a full-court-press marketing effort to convince everyone that The Hair was in charge and Things Were Gonna Change, and it shows. The Cabinet's basically got no depth to it, but OMG does it have a lot of representation of every effing grievance group they could think of.
Sadly, general competency in the party is lacking. I'm really not sure who a new figurehead could be; the conundrum for the true leaders of the party is that none of them are elected. Ooooops. Can't very well put one of them forward as PM, now can we?
Almost makes me want to renew my long-since-lapsed Federal Liberal Party membership card just so's I can go to the Convention and stir up some shit.
Brutality, repression, executions, poverty. yes, quite a legacy. quite a love for the Cuban people. but let all the world leaders praise him -- of course, for a dictatorship, a one world government, is what they strive for. they would love to emulate him, if only they could.
IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED, REASON!?!?!?!
IS THIS SOME KIND OF SICK GAME TO YOU!?!?!!?
Here, have a pretty girl remind you that Castro is dead.
Huh, I never knew Flo the Progressive lady was Cuban.
Would you want to work on Sunday if everyone was just going to be mean to you?
George F. Will has a great Castro article.
Is that the guy with the sports machine or the bow tie?
The guy with the bowtiw is Bill Nye, the Pseudoscience Guy.
Who hangs out with Black Space Talking Man.

The sports machine guy hangs out with Lou Reed these days.

While we wait for Mugabe to join Castro, Comrade Fatso reports on the news from Zimbabwe
"...if they release Bond Notes, we'll finally be able to play Monopoly in our own money."
Snort.
The good news is Castro is dead. The slightly bad news is Gillespie has assigned writing the reason Castro Obit to Sheldon Richman.
I knew Israel was to blame.
"The Zionists have finally killed the Libertarian Lion of Latin America..."
At least it's not Dalmia.
Were Castro and Modi friends or enemies? Because that's gonna color Shikha's thoughts on Fidel.
Jesse needs to give us a review of Kill Castro.

Kaepernick had to play in Miami the weekend after Castro died. Don't tell me God doesn't have a sense of humor.
I was watching the Davis Cup tennis. It was repulsive to see Diego Maradona in the stands.
The picture of him getting sandwiched between Alonso and Suh short of the goal line brought smiles to my heart.
That's what should have happened to Fidel, rather than dying peacefully in old age as he prevented so many others from doing.
Too bad it had to come from an absolute piece of shit like Suh.
Life doesn't always let you choose the bread in your turd sandwich.
Fidel spent his last couple of years being fed through a feeding tube and shitting through and artifical anus into a bag. Not that he didn't deserve a lot worse, but it is good to know that he died in a fairly painful and humiliating way. He didn't exactly go out in a blaze of glory like he always dreamed of.
I understand Kaepernick wore a Castro t-shirt to the post-game interview.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/27/.....index.html
He must think his career is over, right?
He's burning every bridge he can find. It's hard to imagine him getting another endorsement deal for anything.
He does endorsements for Beats Audio, but who else would pay him for an endorsement at this point?
What team's fan base would be happy to trade for him?
The Raiders, maybe? Anyone else? Anyone at all?
The Browns
The Browns' fan base wants Kaepernick?
I don't think so.
"but who else would pay him for an endorsement at this point?"
The guy who does his tats.
Seriously, the 9ers management shopped the guy and had an offer for more than a beer in the stands and didn't take it.
He's not a guy who can make it on his speaking ability, so peddling insurance or broadcasting is not in the cards. Since he became a vegan, he's lost a lot of muscle, so we can forget lumping furniture for Allied.
Maybe his new GF can make some money along with preaching.
You don't even want his image associated with your product.
If you're Nike, you don't want people to associated his image with your brand. You don't want him in a print ad.
You don't want him on Wheaties box.

The Washington Post has hit a new low.
Matt Drudge is being controlled by the KGB. I suppose they're some how telling him which links to post from the NYT, CNN, CBS, NBC, etc to help spread Russian propaganda. BTW, Krugnuts is totally on this derp train. Pure genius that Putin is, he can't be stopped. Must be the lizard people who are really in control.
I bet people who don't know anything about Raimondo assume antiwar.com is a left wing site.
Say whatever else you want about Raimondo, the suggestion that he could be a purveyor of Russian propaganda is ridiculous on its face.
Mike Tirico adds nothing to a broadcast.
Neither does Collinsworth. I'm watching the game, but listening to The Oh Sees on Spotify.
So long as they don't cut away from the ref signaling a penalty, I haven't had the sound on for a game in a long time.
Canada's foreman doubles down:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/politic.....-1.3869851
"The fact is Fidel Castro had a deep and lasting impact on the Cuban people. He certainly was a polarizing figure and there certainly were concerns around human rights. That's something that I'm open about and that I've highlighted," he added.
"But on the passing of his death I expressed a statement that highlighted the deep connection between the people of Canada and the people of Cuba."?
Not to be outdone, Quebec's premier chimes in:
"Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard, who is also at the summit, defended Trudeau, calling his statement about Castro's death "well-balanced."
"Yes, his accomplishments will be in various tones of grey ? some white, some black ? but historians will have to decide this," Couillard told reporters Sunday. "I see no controversy in describing him as a giant of the 20th century."
Jesus Christ.
These people need to be made to face Cubans who suffered by that douchebag's hand.
Again with free health and education. As if Cuba could not achieve this in a free and open society free from murder, torture and mayhem.
Like Godzilla.
Unlike Mao, Stalin, and Hitler, who truly were giant asswipes. Castro's only giant accomplishment was lasting so long. No, Fidel was no giant, just a B-star in the pantheon of tyrants. I googled and found some suspect top-25/10 lists of dictators; they rank Hitler as killing more people than Stalin, so they aren't very good. Neither lists Mussolini or Castro. I'd bet Castro killed more than Mussolini, but does he belong in the top 25? I doubt the top 10.
The Miami Herald obit credits Castro with causing (although not necessarily directly) the assassination of an American President.
"The Miami Herald obit credits Castro with causing (although not necessarily directly) the assassination of an American President."
THAT is a stretch.
Yeah, but could Mao throw a fastball? I think not, smart guy!
But could Fidel swim the Yangtze?
No. His magnificent beard made it hydrologically impossible.
"...they rank Hitler as killing more people than Stalin"
Well, um, Stalin didn't, like, kill all those people INTENTIONALLY.

Osama Bin Laden's contributions to aviation security cannot be overstated. Yes, there are tones of grey, but that's something that I'm open about and that I've highlighted.
Let us mourn Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, social media pioneer. (crosses fingers)
AmSoc [it] read a book -any book- and realized [it] had no place comparing the well-being of the average citizen of Cuba to any American citizen. Or perhaps AmSoc got a job, and realized just by earning a wage they were above the average Cuban citizen[slave].
Commie-kid did dispute someone's claim to starvation in Cuba, claiming that no one in Cuba is worse off than someone in the US. So I spent, oh, 20-30 seconds:
"Millions of Cubans facing starvation: Hunger is fuelling an exodus of desperate refugees, writes Phil Davison from Havana"

Fidel (Hip?lito Casiano) Alejandro Castro Ruz died on November 25. He was born on August 13, 1926 on his father's sugar plantation in Biran, near Mayari, in what was then Oriente Province, Cuba.
When it came to Latin dictators, he was second to none, ruling autocratically for over 56 years (if you count the time he shadowed Raul after formally retiring); longer than Porfirio Diaz, Alfredo Stroessner, Anastasio Somoza, "Papa Doc" Duvalier, Rafael Trujillo, and Francisco Franco. However, as a murderous dictator, he was definitely second-class. He eliminated nowhere near as many as the 20th century's truly heavy hitters, Mao Tse-tung (70 million), Joseph Stalin (40 million), Adolf Hitler (depends on how they're tallied), Pol Pot (2 million) ? or a slew of other, lesser killers. He did, however, kill more people than Augusto Pinochet.
Today in non-Castro news
1. The STEVE SMITH of fish: the males develop bigger genitals to rape the females, who in in turn develop larger brains to escape them. Grab its motherfucking fin.
2. Kills sin dead: South African pastor blesses and heals his flock by spraying them with Doom Super Multi Insect Killer.
3. And in the West Bank city of Ramallah, they built a restaurant in the style of the Krusty Krab from Spongebob Squarepants.
OT: has anyone considered just how stupid it is that Trump is "literally Hitler" in the minds of "progressives"?
If you actually read the Nazi Party platform (which I doubt "progressives" have done) you'll see things like free college, free healthcare, mandatory profit-sharing, creation of a sound middle class, confiscation of "unearned" income, and strict control of the finance industry. So it turns out that when it comes to Der Fuhrer, you can also draw comparisons to Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Barack Obama. This is because Hitler ran a pretty average populist appeal to disaffected blue collar workers and was not really anything out of the ordinary until much later in his reign.
Yes.
That's why Nazis are socialists.
All cut from the same cloth.
But don't tell that to those idiots.
They were the nationalist socialist party, so that should not come as any surprise. The left painting them as right wing is just pure bullshit. They were definitely left wing. And they did what all left wing regimes do, install a totalitarian regime, kill lots of people, start wars, and eventually make everyone poor except for the elite ruling class. The difference with the Nazis is that they were just so effective at what they did, that it resulted in self destruction very quickly as opposed to the slower and more gradual implosions of most leftist regimes, like the Soviet Union, Cuba, and Venezuela.
"If you actually read the Nazi Party platform (which I doubt "progressives" have done) you'll see things like free college, free healthcare, mandatory profit-sharing, creation of a sound middle class, confiscation of "unearned" income, and strict control of the finance industry."
Strongly suggest 'Wages of Destruction", Adam Tooze.
You'll get an eyeful of Hitler's financial policies and his clear statement (echoed in Pipes "A Concise History...") that the difference was never hidden.
Hitler promoted *national* socialism, while Lenin pushed *international* socialism. If you read Pipes "The Russian Revolution", you'll see that Lenin got about as far in the effort as Hitler did in a similar amount of time. But Lenin was 'way more blood-thirsty.
Re your question waaayyy up about the Cuban writer. I just looked it up, copied and pasted and it worked.

That would remove all the mystery when you turn on a game and find it 8-to-3.
In addition to the obsession over the health and education system in Cuba, they're also babbling about the U.S. embargo as if Cuba wasn't trading with Russia/Soviet Union, the EU and Canada.
I'll bet you didn't know that the only source of pharm products in the world is the good ol' US of A!
I know this since every lie-repeating lefty ever has told me that Cuba didn't have meds since the US wouldn't sell to them.
It was the same crap with Iraq under Hussein. He traded with the EU and Russia. He just didn't give anything to the people. Because asshole.
Especially since the USSR would buy Cuban sugar at a multiple several times its "normal" price to make up for the lack of a US market.
It's jarring to imagine how much worse off the Cuban people would be if not for all the material largess of the USSR.
I'm enjoying the fact that the Mark Cuban owned Mavericks are in last with an impressive 3-13 record.
He sure knows how to pick the winners.
By the way, why does the death announcement look like it was filmed with a 1960's camera? I had a better camcorder in the 6th grade. Does Cuba not trade with China?
"I had a better camcorder in the 6th grade."
You had a Game Boy Camera too, huh?

What did the pirate say when he turned 80?
Aye Matey.
My niece was looking for some good short stories for her daughter to read and we started talking about the classics - Gift of the Magi, The Lottery, The Veldt, The Monkey's Paw - and I found out she'd never read Born of Man and Woman.
OK, let's see:
"- Vladimir Putin -
"The name of this distinguished statesman is rightly considered the symbol of an era in modern world history," the Russian president said.
"Fidel Castro was a sincere and reliable friend of Russia."
- Xi Jinping -
China's president hailed Castro in a message read out on state television. "The Chinese people have lost a good and true comrade," he said.
"Comrade Castro will live forever. "
- Nicolas Maduro -
The Venezuelan president, Cuba's main ally in the region, said on Twitter: "It is up to us to continue his legacy and carry his flag of independence."

A target-rich environment! Lefties are whining almost as much as they did when they watched Trumps EC number sail past 270.
More Comrade Fatso. He opens with a bit on Zimbabwe's Bond Notes.
In case of inflation, break note into two, then you have two bond notes for the price of one!
And then you can search pretty far down on ABC News list of "World Leaders" to see if anyone thought that miserable piece of shit was indeed a miserable piece of shit:
"a wise and strong person": Putin
"Upon receiving the sad news of the passing of your beloved brother, the honorable Fidel Castro Ruz": That tired shit in the funny hat.
"I lament the death of Fidel Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution and the emblematic reference of the 20th century..." Mexican wannabe thug
"we have to continue with his legacy and his flag of independence, of socialism, of homeland." Maduro; what do you expect.
And so on:

So, Black Lives Matter said some things...
Yep, I think that just about does it for their credibility.
It's unfortunate that - in the minds of most of the public - the police violence debate is divided into Black Lives Matter and "law and order" cop worshippers.
There's no voice in that debate that is calling out the root of the problem: armed government officials who are not subject to any meaningful limitations or accountability.
THIS IS MY BOOM STICK!
I shared my $.02.

Black lice wants to matter...
And after that, it gets sillier
Oh, but it was worth reading at least as far as this so-perfectly-imbecilic paragraph:
"Revolution is rooted in the recognition that there are certain fundamentals to which every being has a right, just by virtue of one's birth: healthy food, clean water, decent housing, safe communities, quality healthcare, mental health services, free and quality education, community spaces, art, democratic engagement, regular vacations, sports, and places for spiritual expression are not questions of resources, but questions of political will and they are requirements of any humane society."
I particularly enjoy the gradual steps that take us from food to regular vacations and sports.

Trudeau's statement was over the top praising Castro. And needless. Unless Canada is depending on the Castro brother in giving Canada some lucrative contracts. Then it becomes diplomatic games.
IN the big scheme of things, the praise from world leaders is not a big deal. Castro, for all his faults, did ally with some world leaders and gave them moral support. The US has done it in the past where Reagan praised Marcos and called that islamic despot Zia one of his good friends. The Bushes and Clintons have done similar things with leaders from the middle east and praised them during events.
Hollyweird will miss their murderous Marxist dictator.
Anyone else?

Question: in the time since the United States government reinstated the death penalty (1976-present) which government has executed more people? Cuba or the United States?
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Racist much, pig?
Why would you compare gross numbers of executions between a country of ~324 million and a country of ~11 million?
Also, we really don't know how many people may have been executed in Cuba since communist countries are not known for their transparency or respect for human rights.

The comment about inequality is really telling of the socialist ideology. Everyone living in equal poverty is preferable to inequality where everyone has a chance to escape poverty.
They're re not alone. Most world leaders found some way to 'put a gloss' on Castro's infamous record of abusing Cubans. Obviously he failed in that, since so many of those continue to be 'beggars' for his punishment.
The article might have been more appropriately titled "5 Good Responses From World Leaders".
But there would have been a problem finding those 5.
and more useful too! Frankly, Trump's is the only one that came close!
Idiots who don't even rise to the level of "useful."
Castro: Finally emulating a good Communist.
I had to laugh at "In a statement that reads like it was produced by a bot employed by a crumbling bureaucracy." You mean Juncker is NOT a "bot employed by a crumbling bureaucracy?"
Juncker's last line should be noted more sharply. It is almost a quote of Castro's line after being found guilty and sent to prison which was, in turn, a verbatim quote of Adolf Hitler after he had been found guilty of the Beer Hall putsch and sent to prison.
As for Jizm Trudeau, too much is made of this. He meant, "My father was a star, Castro was a star, I am a star," and no more. That is, really, as deep as he gets. He is a TMZ PM, incapable of deeper thought than a thoughtless 14-year-old.
"Outside its small tourist sector, the rest of the city looks as though it suffered a catastrophe on the scale of Hurricane Katrina or the Indonesian tsunami. Roofs have collapsed. Walls are splitting apart. Window glass is missing. Paint has long vanished. It's eerily dark at night, almost entirely free of automobile traffic. I walked for miles through an enormous swath of destruction without seeing a single tourist."
This description fits exactly the photos on the site I was talking about. It looks like Haiti after that earthquake, seriously. It's a dystopian shithole. And the left have already shut up about the great healthcare system because that's already been exposed as a massive lie.
