Gary Johnson's Not Happy That Hillary Clinton's Geography Gaffe Didn't Get the 'Aleppo Moment' Treatment
Clinton's gaffes and foreign policy failures haven't generated the mockery Johnson has received.

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson is not happy that Hillary Clinton's foreign policy gaffe at Wednesday's debate was noticed by almost no one in the mainstream political commentariat.
Clinton, whose candidacy is largely built on her foreign policy experience, described the Iraqi city of Mosul as a "border city," when it is in fact, 75 miles from the nearest border in one direction, and 100 miles from the border of Syria in another direction. As U.S. News and World Report's Steven Nelson noted, "Ireland is closer to Wales. Montreal is nearer to New York state and Damascus, Syria's capital, is closer to Israel – either its de facto or internationally recognized borders."
In an interview with U.S. News, Johnson said, "The obvious response is there is a very hypocritical double standard here," adding, "If anyone ought to know geographic locations, it's Hillary."
Johnson's clearly still chafed over the fact that his inability to recognize the name of the city that is the epicenter of the Syrian refugee crisis, Aleppo, was undoubtedly the most covered moment of his campaign. His deer-in-the-headlights reaction—"What is Aleppo?"—has been used by his critics (many of whom are Clinton supporters who believe any vote for a third party candidate is a moral deficiency) to paint him as a goofy, pot-addled ignoramus whose dangerous lack of foreign policy knowledge would make the country unsafe.
To be sure, Johnson did not make a compelling case for his brand of non-interventionism when he completely blanked on Aleppo, which is a name that most people who consume news on a daily basis would at least recognize as a troubled Middle Eastern city. Johnson did much better when he laid out what I called a "sane, coherent, and skeptical foreign policy" at the University of Chicago earlier this month. In that address, he rejected the idea that libertarianism is synonymous with "isolationism," but also insisted that Congress should do its constitutional duty and declare war if necessary, rather than rely on the executive branch to use legal contortions to justify military intervention. He also said that Americans should not expect some kind of decisive victory over ISIS or any other Islamist extremist group, nor should the world expect the U.S. to serve as the world police for the rest of time.
Maybe it is unfair that in presidential elections, optics are pretty much everything, and blanking on trivia or bizarrely sticking your tongue out at a reporter during an interview is bound to be more noticable than Clinton mistating important details during a presidential debate—even though her supposedly unmatched grasp of details is one of her largest selling points.
To be sure, this isn't the first time Clinton has made a foreign policy "gaffe" during a nationally televised forum. At the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) Commander-in-Chief forum last month, she defended her support for U.S. military intervention in Libya because, she said, the alternative would have meant civil war. The fact that Libya has been in a state of civil war since that intervention five years ago went unnoticed by the mainstream media.
Also barely touched upon is the fact that a recent U.K. Parliament inquiry found that the NATO intevention in Libya in 2011 was the result of international leaders cherry-picking information to justify regime change and failing to consider what would happen to the country (now essentially a failed state) afterward.
As Secretary of State, Clinton was the most forceful proponent of the Libyan intervention in the Obama administration, which she continues to defend as "smart power at its best." Though the results were disastrous, and of far greater consequence than any media gaffes committed by Johnson, Clinton still enjoys her media perception as the adult in the room whose career-long record of supporting every single U.S. military intervention of the past 25 years is an asset, not a demerit.
When seen through that prism, it's pretty easy to understand why Johnson doesn't appreciate the "double standard" when it comes to judging his foreign policy experience against Clinton's.

Democrats don't get geography quizzes from the media. They get softballs, usually with a compliment baked into them.
"Madam Presi... Ms. Clinton, is it true that you foresaw current events with a clarity usually only found in prophets and holy figures? How do you plan on using your divine nature to save us all when you are finally anointed empre... president?"

Bush was widely criticized for incorrectly calling the Timorese people Timorians. Give me a fucking break. Now if he called Germans Germanians or the French Francians they'd have a point.
Well the Chosen One Obama would have you believe Austrians have their own language group. He must have spent hours brushing up on his Swiss.

Hillary is the serious, qualified candidate, not some flaky dope fiend. We all know what she meant to say.
This is known.
Sure, we all know that the Clintons smoke weed.. they just don't inhale.. (smh)
According to those who knew him at Oxford, he couldn't smoke weed due to mild asthma; instead he partook in large amounts of baked goods.
So he was 100% truthful when he said he never inhaled.
Christopher Hitchens wrote about that at least once. He was at Oxford at the same time and said edibles were generally the method of choice in those days.
Ethan Klein does God's work.

Funny and sad.
He's been banging this drum for a while.

If you look at a map, you wouldn't call Mosul a border city. It's not like El Paso or San Diego. It's well inside the border.
While Gary is definitely correct about double standards. Yes, once could say that Mosul borders ISIS controlled territory and Iraqi Kurd controlled territory. But it's nowhere near Syria.
With all the different religions ,tribes and groups, every town could be a 'border town' in this fucked up land.
Been like that since Assyria, at least. City-states going to city-state, bro.
Once asked a guy in the know about Middle East what 'natural' political borders would look like on a map.
His reply was 'natural' borders were pretty much defined by where one could park their tank. If noone the locals around had enough firepower to take said tank out, than that patch belonged to whatever outfit the tank represented.
Variations of that dictum has been way Mideast works for, oh, about a written history or so.
Of course, if you went anywhere in Europe pre-1648 and made the argument that borders should 'naturally' be drawn up to encompass one nation of people who share a particular language, culture, and religion, people would look at you like you had 3 heads. The whole point of empire in respect to nations/ethno-groups resembled Pokemon: Gotta catch 'em all!
I'm not sure people really understand that the countries of "Germany" and "Italy" didn't exist until the 19th Century. And about mid way through the 19th Century at that.
Or to put another way, the Cincinnati Reds predate Germany.
Hey now! Diversity is their strength, their unlimited, unqualified, pure and eternal strength.
That's really the difference. If you called Hillary out on this, she would quickly produce a semi-reasonable bullshit answer as to why she considers Mosul a border city. Maybe based on ISIS borders or Kurd borders. Maybe just based on the fact that, while there are a lot of miles, there ain't shit between Mosul and Syria.
In the same situation, Gary Johnson would chuckle and admit to having fucked up.
But, I'm not voting for a candidate based on their knowledge of geography (I've been to Mosul, but while reading this article, I immediately pulled up google maps to get a better look at where it is related to borders). In this situation, one of these two candidates would admit his mistake and offer a reasonable answer to the original question based on whatever new and correct info he received. The other would lie, bluff, and twist words to avoid even remotely acknowledging a possible mistake.
Don't forget that the media would circle the wagons and pull out every half baked idea they could in order to defend their CFR Queen.
Remember when she was "greeted by bullets" in Bosnia?
Anyone see this one this morning?

I'm sorry but have you not seen the D behind her name? Just because the things she has done make Watergate and Pussygate look like childish pranks does not mean anyone should pay attention. She has doubleplusgood opinions.

It's national review and can safely be ignored.
/every Clinton supporter.
This. Confirmation bias is the only trusted source of information in that camp.
My (otherwise very intelligent) proggy friend hand-waved everything on wikileaks away because the guy who runs it "has it in for" herself.
Imagine using that argument the other way around, you'd be laughed out of town as an un-serious, un-american denier. It's like arguing with creationists.
To paraphrase the great Paul Krugman, there's no reason to read anything from an opposing viewpoint because you already know they're wrong.
I think a bigger problem is that she does know what Aleppo is, and is willing to risk a confrontation with the Russians over it.
Agreed. We'd all be better off if Clinton didn't know what Aleppo is.
As far as this, Gary's gaffe was worse.
But yeah. You know if Gary said that it would be used to exaggerate the narrative.
Mosul has a lot of Borders stores. That's what she meant.
So that's where they all went
Under heavy sniper fire, no doubt.
3rd party loon also crybaby, film at 11.
Is Johnson that old billionaire playboy from Manhattan who's dedicated the last decade to starring in reality TV shows? Loony tunes. Why anybody would vote for him when the Republican ticket features two respected two-term governors of primarily Democratic states...I can never figure out what people are thinking.
Arg!
I can never figure out what people are thinking.
My mind is aglow with whirling, transient nodes of thought careening thru a cosmic vapor of invention.
+1 use your tongue prettier than a $20 whore
Maybe he's setting up to adopt a bit of the 'biased media/rigged election' narrative to mop up with disaffected Trump supporters in the final weeks.
It would be a moronic plan but a plan nonetheless.
It's too bad Trump isn't aware of this stuff. He could have asked her what border Mosul is on.
It really is a cripple fight.
Timmy!!!!
Most Americans would not have gotten the zinger and the media would not have pointed the zinger out....so
Obama wasn't criticized for his "57 states" gaffe, either, or "corpsemen," or others.
Yeah, no one ever brings those up.
I'd really prefer that people just stop harping on stupid bullshit like that. There is so much real stuff to criticize these people about.
Obama is terrible, but I have no doubt that he knows how many states there are and how to pronounce "corpsman".
Yes, it does expose some hypocrisy in the media. But I'd rather everyone stop being stupid rather than have everyone stoop to that level. Of course, neither is likely to happen.
Second. It's not like there isn't plenty of real issues to attack these clowns over.
And Dan Quayle probably knows how to spell potato. That didn't stop the press from making him a national laughing stock.
Which was fucking stupid, just like pretending that Obama doesn't know how many states there are.
Obama is terrible, but I have no doubt that he knows how many states there are and how to pronounce "corpsman".
Yes, it does expose some hypocrisy in the media. But I'd rather everyone stop being stupid rather than have everyone stoop to that level. Of course, neither is likely to happen.
IDK, the guy, at one point, ran on a pro-intellectualism campaign and touts his scholarly credentials. I think, if anything, there should be more standardization and conviction to the whole thing. If we're gonna criticize potatoe and corpsman, we should diminish or revoke their power over education, agriculture, and military spending or at least recognize any/all ineptitude for what it is. Might bolster the libertarian cause a bit.
Unfortunately "we" aren't in a position to do that. And aren't likely to convince anyone who doesn't already think that government shouldn't be involved in those things.
I agree, but here we are.
It all makes sense when you realize that election reporting and political news, like all other news, is merely entertainment disguised as information.
Dan Quayle is still primarily remember for adding fucking e to Potatoes. Our society is moronic.
I was assured by one of our resident trolls that Obama's "57 states" came when he was obviously exhausted and couldn't think straight.
I see no reason to doubt that. He meant to say "47" because he wasn't going to Alaska or Hawaii and had one state to go.
That one's right up there with the GHW Bush barcode scanner thing or the dog on Romney's roof.
The one thing I can't so easily dismiss is Obama's remark about people from Austria speaking Austrian. I can be tired, stoned, and drunk and I wouldn't even accidentally refer to people from Canada speaking Canadian. He may well not know that Austrians speak German.
And most Americans probably don't either, but as man.casual noted, the guy is lauded (and presents himself as) some sort of intellectual; he's treated like a supergenius, like, he knows everything! And yet here he is, making the kind of mistake only those yokel Republicans and stoner libertarians make.
You have to admit, with how much even the dumbest of progressives (see Tony) flog the notion of the 'intellectual left' and act as though they have a near monopoly on intelligence, they are just begging us to fling shit at the for every stupid mistake just to prove them wrong.
I guess the analogy for a Republican would be like catching Rick Sanatorium jerking off and rubbing it in his face (proverbially, of course) just to get him off his high horse.
Ever tried telling an Austrian they speak German? It's like telling the Flemish they speak Dutch.... which is more or less true, but not advisable.
There are 57 states of slavery that the Democratic overlords want us to get to.
#1 indifference to corruption
....
In an interview with U.S. News, Johnson said, "The obvious response is there is a very hypocritical double standard here," adding, "If anyone ought to know geographic locations, it's Hillary."
Goddamnit Gary! You're not making things any better! Just shut the hell up before I refuse to vote for you either.
[kicks rock, mumbles under breath "*That's* the double standard he fucking rails against..."]
Too little, too late. I early voted for Gary Johnson in a state he could possibly win. Nevertheless, his
entire "campaign" raises questions about the best strategy(ies) for running a third-party insurgency
against the two monied, favored parties. The "Debate-or-Bust" strategy failed. The Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time lack of preparation failed. Did Johnson prep with an opposition interrogation by his staff? Did he have a staff?
This was a year that any qualified third-party candidate could have crashed the bigger parties. But outside
of two MSM gaffes, what did the average person learn about Gary Johnson? You can't blame the media
for this. Third parties need creativity, innovation and solid preparation. They can't look like high school
students who did not do their homework. There are strategies for dealing with questions you can't answer at the moment. Johnson's perennial lack of preparation showed and it damaged him.
This. And I would add that running as a liberal republican (and all the shit that this entails) did not allow him to pick up the large swath of voters on the right who were disaffected with Trump.
Everything you say is true. But he still looks to be headed for the best showing ever for a Libertarian in the presidential election. Which is good.
If McMuffin had gotten it together to run as a third party back in March or April, I could see him having a serious impact on the race, maybe even winning.
Do you ever use your delusion?
Did Johnson prep with an opposition interrogation by his staff? Did he have a staff?
Considering Bill Weld made the LP his bitch, I'm gonna say, "Yes".
I groused abt Gary's other campaign. But this time, after looking closely at the alternatives, the asset-forfeiture crashes and the changes in vote counts from past campaigns, Gary is looking like the pick of the litter. Key is getting an increasing slice of the vote, and that the two looter factions be neck-and-neck slashing each others' throats for that hand in the till and all those gubmint jobs for their buddies.
Decreasing slices--a side effect of popular revulsion with officious and suicidal religious fanatics who cause market crashes and recessions--won't cut it in market-share calculations. So the ku-klux Teabags are toast. Never forget that the LP has gotten more votes than what it took to pass the 18th Amendment with a 1.4% share. A 600% beating of the spread in 1892 allowed the Populists to pass laws not in the entrenched party platforms. And a fivefold beating of the spread in Y2k caused the Dems to suck up the entire Green platform leaving whutzername at the short end of 1000-to-1 odds on a betting table showing Gary even with McMuffin.
There is no sanity or justice in this world. None.
A sane, just world would have applied the same standards to Hillary that it applies to the other candidates. The anti-war left is happy to overlook Hillary's hawkishness. The anti-Wall-Street left is happy to overlook her ties to the same. The "she's the only competent candidate" bunch is happy to overlook Hillary's incompetence as Secretary of State. The "believe her" crowd is happy to overlook Hillary assassinating the character of her husband's accusers.
The double standards on display in our media-driven world are excruciatingly painful to me; I've even been having trouble sleeping lately. Why must these double standards exist? What is driving them, other than Kafkaesque irrationality and malevolence?
100 years ago, Progressives took power and changed the way childrearing worked, thereby guaranteeing that a large majority of children would be taken into a government education center and taught "the ways of the world" largely by single women (which the Progressives knew was their core base at the time). This meant that the primary influence on children since the start of compulsory public schooling was the teacher instead of the parents. This has practically meant that a child's teachers are, on average, more progressive than the child's parents. That ideological bias was practically guaranteed by the creation of teacher's unions, which turned teachers' politics into an identity trait.
While most children were still heavily influenced by their parents in the first generation or so, they were graduating significantly more progressive than their parents, only to have the rigors and realities of the real world hit them over the head and bring their sensibilities more in line with their parents. However, they were always a bit more progressive than their parents. Later on, parents' influence waned, and their children stayed more and more progressive. Anyway, certain industries have characteristic meteoric rise career trajectories that allow people in these industries to be insulated from the real world. Hollywood is one. The news media is another. Therefore they stay more prog.
That's putting it lightly. I read some parts of her Goldman Sachs speeches and the only take away that kept jumping out at me was that only the "industry experts" are in a position to write "smart" regulations for the financial industry. In other words, "support me and you'll have regulatory capture beyond your wildest dreams". Why do you think they've been throwing so much money at her? Out of the goodness of their hearts and best wishes for the American people? Or because these people know how to make an investment with ROI like no other?
Like most of her crookedness, it's too subtle for most of the public to catch on. Someone with half a brain needs to turn it into a sound bite that actually sticks. But all we've got is Trump.
There is no mystery. Republican Mohammedans want men with guns to force women to reproduce or practice medicine with coathangers. That's half the voters under 50 right there. They also want more prohibitionist asset-forfeiture crashes and recessions with bailouts (and cops shooting teenagers), so there went the fiscal whatchamacallits. There is nobody left but machine politicians, their crony contractors and parasitical hangers-on to vote Republican. All the Dems have to do to win is NOT BE THEM.
How many in the media know that Mosul is not on the border? A few? I doubt that more than a small minority know middle east geography well at all. I'm voting for Johnson, but it's one thing to not recognize the name of a city that was in the news, Aleppo, and to call Mosul a border city when it is 75 miles from a border. I get Johnson was hit with a gotcha question, but you have to expect those tactics especially as a 3rd party candidate. The R's and D's may not agree on much but they both agree on no 3rd parties.
I've only started noticing Aleppo constantly in the news after Johnson's gaffe. And he didn't have the benefit of security briefings before his gaffe. In any case, everyone in the whole freaking world knows Johnson wouldn't become president so overlooking his gaffe would have made sense. And it makes no sense to overlook the myriad gaffes, malfeasances, lies, etc. of someone who can (will) become president BECAUSE THOSE DO MATTER.
I agree with a lot of people that Johnson only had the attention turned on him when it became clear he was a threat to take away Clinton voters. Had he been drawing mainly from Trump, he would have gotten fawning coverage from the MSM.
The question was timed to maximize the "gotcha" factor. As I recall, he'd been speaking about domestic issues when that drooling idiot "tingle up my leg" Matthews interjected, "What about Aleppo?"
Even someone who knows a bit about Syria might have had to take a moment to shift mental gears when the subject is suddenly changed.
Had Gary been a more polished candidate, he could have played for time and said something like, "Aleppo? In what context are you asking me about that Chris? Strategy or something else?" The interviewer would have had no choice but to fill in another detail or two, probably enough that Gary would have recognized the conversation was shifting to ME policies, which he most definitely has an opinion (and coherent policy) about.
And this is leaving aside the huge irony that probably 90% of the people who subsequently made/shared jokes themselves had zero idea what Aleppo is, and even the fucking NYT got it wrong and had to print a retraction pointing out that it is not, in fact, the capital city.
But as others have pointed out, a reporter would never pull this kind of thing on any candidate with a D after their name. Gotcha questions are only used on the wrongthinkful.
The questioner was scumbag Mike Barnicle. But you are exactly right. They were discussing the duopoly and third party "Nader effect" when out of the blue, no intro, no context, "What would you do about Aleppo". It would be like if you were discussing race horses and someone said , "What about Bagdhad?"
This has been my big critique of Johnson (whom I am still voting for). I can accept him not immediately recognizing that the questioning had shifted to Syria. What I can't accept is that he's repeatedly shown himself to be unable to bluff his way through a question that he doesn't immediately have an answer to. The man was elected to a statewide office twice, so sure he should be able to spin and deflect questions that he isn't ready to answer long enough to think up a coherent response.
I'm voting for the platform Gary is kind enough to stand on to give us a helping hand. And I thought his answer to the stupid question was better than some lame evasion. Undecided voters who--like most of the intelligentzia spewing forth in this forum--have NEVER read any of the platforms, will see the youngest and kindliest candidate being picked on by a body double for Jabba the Hutt. Since I do not watch teevee I have a different take on that scene via Youtube--a win for Gary and a pratfall for Nixon's bought corps of presstitutes and bushwhackers.
I think it's a more serious gaffe to not know what Aleppo (A leppo?) is than it is to mislocate a place.
Most of them thought Aleppo was the capital of Syria or the capital of ISIS, so not many I expect.
If I ever run for office, I'm going to troll these fuckers so hard every chance I get. I'll go around saying Ankara is the capital of Istanbul, tomatoes are a fruit, that bears can run downhill, and hair stops growing when you die, just to see the NYT publish and then have to revoke their 'gotcha' articles.
Not. Now Lepo Lepo's gone from a song to a Youtube dance with gorgeous Brazilian gals and a muscular youngster capable of attracting women into the Libertarian Party despite our... timid... straddle plank: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSacXgub7lI
"If anyone ought to know geographic locations, it's Hillary."
Why? That's what the drone pilot is for.
These are world class leaders. To them, the earth is a chess board, as they study the game and position the pieces, to maximize the happiness of all Americans.
* sneezes and explodes into a cloud of glitter *
You expect even treatment from the media on "gaffes"? How charmingly naive!
You have to remember a Democratuc Presidential candidate is always the smartest, most capable person in the room. Any mistake is understandable due to exhausting due to them working so damn hard for the people or an endearing personality quirk (see Joe Biden).
A misstatement by nonDemocrat candidate is irrefutable evidence of their being a bloody idiot.
I've had it. Fuck Hillary Clinton. The bitch should be in prison, not the white house. And fuck my (I'm assuming now ex) GF for calling me a misogynist. Is every person not voting for Trump or Johnson a man hater?
I'm so fucking tired of these bullshit double standards. Fuck the government, as long as I'm at it, and the fucking douche bag media. Fuck the Millennials, fuck the baby boomers, and fuck Obama. Did i forget anybody? Well fuck them too.
You missed gen X, but don't worry, nobody cares about us.
*grabs flannel shirt and heads to garage to shoot heroin/blow brains out*
You can blame The Pill and possibly Roe v Wade for that. Then in the 80s, The Boomers decided it was time to create another generation in their image.
I'm a Millennial and hate collectivizing, but goddammit I'm going to collectivize: I hate Millennials.
Before this election season, they were bitching about the two-party status quo.
They are now voting for Clinton, signaling their approval of the two-party status quo.
Fuck them. I hope Obamacare fucks them good and hard. They deserve that, and much, much more.
"I hope Obamacare fucks them good and hard"
That's already happening-check your premium/deductible...
Co-signed by another Millennial.
Throw my name on too.
Are 90s kids millennials? I want to be included too.
Yes, I think the generational dividing line is 1999.
We would have preferred to get it good and hard from Grandpa Gulag, but we'll take what we can get.
They may never know economic prosperity, and it will always be because we have too little government.
That's the sad part to me. This shitty economy is probably not just the new norm---it's the height. We're supposed to recover spectacularly after a recession, ride high for a while, sustain another recession, rinse, repeat---giving everyone the chance multiple times in their life to experience prosperity.
Instead, there's been minimal bounceback since the Great Recession, and statistically speaking, another recession is just around the corner. I suspect we won't bounce back from that one either.
This is the new norm. Get used to it, and revere your masters.
Sorry to hear, man. This election is going to end poorly no matter what.
Also, don't forget, everyone not voting for Hillary is both a misogynist and a racist.
And the people who say these things don't seem to grasp that in doing so they are vindicating the very ethos that motivates people to support Trump. Just goes right over their heads.
Suicide is painless, and I have it on God's own Direct Revelation that he's giving all Republican suicides a pass through the end of October. Go ahead... indulge.
To be sure, Johnson did not make a compelling case for his brand of non-interventionism when he completely blanked on Aleppo, which is a name that most people who consume news on a daily basis would at least recognize as a troubled Middle Eastern city.
Why?
I mean really, most people recognize Aleppo as a third world shithole on the other side of the planet. a non- (or even dramatically less) interventionist policy might mean we could grant the place the ignoring it deserves.
"What about Aleppo?"
What about it? I'm not gonna bomb it, whatever it is.
[insert noun]? Knowing what I know about the government, we're spending too much money to achieve little-to-no results on that issue anyway.
Repeat ad nauseum.
Seriously, don't hurt people, don't steal stuff, don't break shit. It's a simple philosophy for any one of the innumerable of implementations Statists can invent.
Yep, and that bothers them to no end. The Christianofascists and Islamofascists they can deal with. ANYONE can deal with idiots. But libertarians expose them as frauds untrue to themselves.
I'm pretty displeased that lying hag is still loose on the streets instead of behind bars someplace.
This is typical too. In the bandana republics all the papists vote en bloc for whomever promises to send more people to jail. It's the cornerstone AND keystone of conservative mystical altruism.
This was a meaningless gaffe.
But saying on TV what the response time is for the nuclear launch was a MAJOR breach.

She belongs in jail for espionage.
I'm out of fucks to give. And I don't mean that sarcastically.
Warty and Crusty will be disappointed.
Not to mention mad.casual's wife/girlfriend/date tonight as the case may be.
I was just reading something yesterday about men having it all wrong about the female sex drive and the truth being that women desire sex just as much as they do, if not more.
If that's true, why the hell aren't they buying *us* dinner and paying *our* rent?
One of us clearly needs some pointers... For starters, never tell a girl you'd vote Republican--not even under torture or blackmail.
The next 4 years are gonna be a mess.
Whiny baby. I'm sorry I am voting for him. Rand Paul 2020.
No matter what HRC does as president (and she will be the next president-unfortunately), it won't matter how badly she fucks things up or how illegal/unconstitutional her actions. You have to hand it to team blue for having a superior propaganda and funding machine that will cover their ass and crush whoever the GOP or third party candidates are. They could not pull this off though if half the population was at least somewhat intelligent.
She's also the first woman president. That makes her untouchable. It amazes me just how little recognition Thatcher got, and all because she was on the 'wrong' side. If she were in Labour, they would've canonized her a saint.
You're right, their PR is superb; all the best propagandists seem to be in their camp. That doesn't exactly expand their moral credibility though.
Rand Paul? How about someone like Austin Peterson instead? Not sure if McAfee is running next time.
All three are credible as Republicans, but a liability impersonating libertarians. Cross-dressers have an adjective: passable. Them three and the anarchist ain't that.
Considering the media has been actively working with the Clinton campaign, is it really such a shock?
Fine public servants are elected to lead, not to read.
Gary Johnson making mistakes and owning up to them, so far hasn't resulted in people being killed, destabilized regions that allow ISIS to expand, and so on goes a long list of policy nightmares that Clinton was very much a part of.
The media thought by hosting two town halls, Johnson/Weld would siphon votes from Trump. Only after they realized the opposite was happening, did they harp on Allepo and not naming a foreign leader he would admire. As to the last "gaffe".....who would admire anything about foreign leaders who engage in the same bullshit politicians here do, and in many cases far worse?
The voters share a large part of the blame for this election cycle. As does the Debate commission run by both sides, who prevented other people from debating.
I think Gary Johnson also missed a big opportunity in his other "gaffe," when he was asked to name a foreign leader he admired. He hemmed and hawed, and eventually came up with Vincente Fox, who it was then pointed out was no longer in office.
For a Libertarian, the easy answer would have been, "Frankly, there's no one I can say I admire. Nor will there be until the time comes that we start seeing more countries led by people who actually believe in liberty and freedom, and who are willing to simply get out of the way so long as the people they serve are not hurting each other or stealing each others' stuff. From what I see, the present trend in more and more places is to put people in power who basically want to maximize their power over others. As a Libertarian, my instincts run counter to that."
Something like that! Instead of seemingly clueless, he would have made a major plug for the philosophy that underpins the entire thing.
But you have to run the candidate you have, I suppose. Can't have everything.
So are you running next year? Vampires have been labeled preety bad.....but many are libertarian. Don't forget, we have to ask permission to come into your house. We don't just barge in and demand your blood.
Most. Qualified. Candidate.
Johnson's "gaff" wasn't "What is Aleppo?", so much as "What is a Leppo?"
Lepo is a Brazilian term for... um... pussygate. See the Lepo Lepo music vid: http://tinyurl.com/oy3lgqy
It's about a down and out bro who figures if he gets any, it's because she must really like him. If I were Gary's campaign manager I'd run it in a heartbeat.

Had the Aleppo moment happened after Trump's meltdown, it never would have been covered. Instead it happened when the race looked competitive, and as a result my average pseudointellectual proglodyte friend only knows Gary Johnson for the Aleppo thing. Now that the election is all but over, that's all they'll ever hear of him on MSM. Brilliant job by the media I must say
Nixon signed the law, they seen their chances and they took 'em.

The next four years is going to be painful as fuck.
I agree with a lot of people that Johnson only had the attention turned on him when it became clear he was a threat to take away Clinton voters.
Pity there aren't any GO Pee voters for anyone to be taking away... according to bookies anyway.

Such outrage!!
Did you reprint this article from The Onion? Nobody except you cares whether Johnson thinks Aleppo is a city in Syria or the fifth Marx brother. Nobody cares because nobody cares about Gary Johnson.
Reason is usually a respectable journal of opinion. Every four years its editors come down with delusions of grandeur.
Oh goodie. I was getting worried God's Own Prohibitionists were running out of spoiler-vote-denial sockpuppets. Yep. Like the Smothers Brothers after killing Bonanza... "We're still here."
I friggin' work in TV news gathering content, and I couldn't have told you what Aleppo was. I think most people in news didn't know, based on the corrections about it that were also wrong.
Remember when a few days later, Clinton didn't know that Libya was in a civil war? That was way more concerning, considering her meddling helped create that mess.
A compliant press willing to cover for the racist warmonger Clinton.
Of course, the media has made a circus of Trump's perfectly reasonable response that he would wait to see the circumstances of the vote, while celebrating the fact the Hillary told a bold-faced lie the next second about the Democrats never contesting elections. She apparently forgot the Supreme Court case of Bush v Gore and the 2004 vote rigging claims made in Ohio by the Democrats. The media clearly has a double standard.
When the 2016 election happens and turns out very close and suspicious in a state or two, we'll have something to compare to.
There was a weeping and gnashing movie abt that vote fraud: Blue State. Tear-streaked progressive Econazi vows to move to Canada and never never return to These Horrible States, and hooks up with a gorgeous... well... you'd haveta see it.
A double standard? In OUR looter Kleptocracy? Gidadaheah!

But what IS a border really? Is not everywhere truly on the border of somewhere else? Arbitrary lines drawn in the minds of men! Who's to say where Mosul truly is? What truly matters is whether it and its people are in our hearts.

I wouldn't take it personally. Nixon's anti-libertarian law is still using your tax return dollars to pay the media to ignore upstart parties with heretical new ideas--as of the day the LP filed its party papers. If Nixon could have gotten the IRS to kidnap the entire Reason staff to Gitmo for torture and burning at the stake, there'd be no post here for any of you to be reading. Moral of the story: it could be worse.
