Anti-Immigration Conservative Intellectuals Are Seriously Misleading Their Party
They are out of step with millennials and America.
Anti-immigration sentiment hasn't just infected the base in Trump's GOP but also some of the smartest conservatives, especially many reformocons. They see the rise of Trump's economic populism

and restrictionism as a vindication of their diagnosis that the GOP ignores the antipathy of its white working class base to immigration and globalization at its peril.
But what they are ignoring is just how out-of-step such sentiment is with the rest of the country. Rush Limbaugh and his media acolytes have been beating the anti-immigration drum for two decades now. But what is the impact on public opinion? GOPers are vastly more anti-immigration. But other Americans are vastly more pro-immigration now polls show, I note in my column at The Week.
In 1994, 63 percent of Americans said immigrants burdened the country and 31 percent said they strengthened it. Now, it's the exact opposite with 59 percent saying strengthen and 33 percent burden.
And what's true for America in general is even truer for the new generation of voters: millennials.
These conservatives won't secure the GOP's existing base as much as they'll sacrifice the future one.

The comments are the best part of a Dalmia article.
I dunno, that picture is alright.
The "14 Stunning Politicians" in the sponsored ad block?
AdBlock, yo.
Adblock yo insane mama!
I'm not good at imitating Mike.
That is to your credit.
And the alt-text.
The comments are the best only part of a Dalmia article worth reading.
But it's always entertaining when she pulls an Erdely.
The one thing I'll say in favor of Dipshit Scumbagetta, unlike some of the more dishonest assholes who work at Reason now, at least she was honest enough to admit that she's voting for Hildog.
Not that there was really ever any doubt or anything, but hey, it's something.
Dipshit Scumbagetta
Come on, man. You're not even trying with that one.
Look, Mikey is not very smart. He sees a name ending in -ia, he assumes they're Italian. Whattayagonna do?
Shisha Derpmia

My Co-Worker's step-sister made $14285 the previous week. She gets paid on the laptop and moved in a $557000 condo. All she did was get blessed and apply the guide leaked on this web site. Browse this site....
This is what I do... http://www.Trends88.Com
Should have headlined with this video:
Streets of Gay Paree
I see nothing but unqualified economic gain in that video. And as we all know, economic gain is the only possible consideration.
Jerbs for street pee moppers?
millennials - now there's a group whose views should be dictating policy.
Let's just try socialism one more time, it will work this time! History... what? They killed millions of people and then starved to death? Rethuglican lies!
History is a racist construct, invented by white men to perpetrate their privilege.
Kids cast the darnedest votes.
Meh. Ms. Dalmia and I fundamentally disagree on this issue. I don't think we're going to change each other's mind, so I just choose to leave her alone.
You have to care what other people think Brett; it's mandatory now.
Especially if you disagree. Those people are evil, baby-eating monsters.
I personally think the gist is pretty much spot on. Trump's position on immigration is way farther right than it needs to be, and -- now having won the Republican primary -- there is no advantage to this position.
He can adopt the typical libertarian view of immigration that it should be easy to work, difficult to obtain citizenship, and near impossible to receive welfare prior to citizenship and he would easily be a more reasonable alternative to Clinton that matches the views of the majority of Americans.
"""difficult to obtain citizenship, and near impossible to receive welfare prior to citizenship""
But that is not what the system is and anyone advocating it will be called a racist and maybe even a pussy grabber.
And of course the standard open borders libertarian answer to getting rid of welfare first before open border is to say that we need open borders now and we will get around to doing something about welfare later
"And of course the standard open borders libertarian answer to getting rid of welfare first before open border is to say that we need open borders now and we will get around to doing something about welfare later"
Well, I'd say it's been pretty well acknowledged for some time among libertarian economists/writers that you can't have welfare and free-(er) immigration because of perverse incentives.
"""Well, I'd say it's been pretty well acknowledged for some time among libertarian economists/writers that you can't have welfare and free-(er) immigration because of perverse incentives."""
Not at Reason, there are plenty of articles and posts which call for free-(er) as you put it immigration and little about getting rid of the various welfare programs to immigrants or anyone else.
They write up articles about the evils of the agriculture budget subsidies to farmers yet ignore that more then 80% of that budget is for food stamps and other welfare
Ah. I am new visitor to Reason. I mostly just read Cato and some economics blogs before.
Before you go too deep down the Cato hole.

It will be much easier to end the welfare state when millions of foreign socialists are voting in our electorate.
I'd prefer this policy position.
You are a purist and I salute you.
"Easy to work"
And therein lies part of the problem. When companies can import labour who will work for peanuts, and have them beholden to the company store, why hire expensive citizens?
Can we can if with the fretting about what fucking "Millenials" supposedly think? Forgive me if I don't put much value in the opinions of a group that professes an appallingly high level of approval of communism.
Can it that is
They are out-of-step with millennials and America
Then there you have it.
So if Republicans are vastly more anti-immigrant then others what makes you think that they will vote for any candidate who wants more immigration? So Shikha wants Republicans to give up their core supporters in order to gain what, they will still be called racists
And who would he be giving up his core supporters to? Hillary?
Millenials AND America??
(As though the former are distinct from the latter)
It almost implies that there's an "idealized" America rather than a real one, and its an idea only some some demographics 'get' (millenials), and everyone else who just happens to be citizens here? They don't count.
Who exactly does shikha think her audience is?
Millennials AND America!
The GOP doesn't need Batman. Batman is fucking useless in *all* incarnations. He 'solves' crimes - but his evidence can't be used in court (barring some parallel construction shenanigans) and he's not enough of a vigilante (except in the BM vs SM movie) to do anything about it.
Mostly he just runs around and beats people up.
SMART POWER AT ITS BEST!
You know there are a lot of reasonable people who are pro immigration, but anti ILLEGAL immigration.
I don't think they should be broadbrushed as racist, islamophobic rethuglikkkans.
See: basically my in-laws' entire family who emigrated from the Philippines in the '70s and '80s.
I don't base my decisions on how they line up with millenials.
I don't know why anyone would do that, it seems ridiculous.
Yeah, lets look to the youngest, least experienced, most poorly educated cohort for guidance!
Republican intellectuals are not misleading their party. They are forsaking their principles to catch up with their party. As Republican intellectual (or, perhaps, "former Republican intellectual") Avik Roy put it, "the Republican Party is the party of white nationalism." It seems like some Republicans read "Reason." Democrats get so many things wrong, but on immigration they're mostly right.
Why would anyone give a fuck what some rando thinks?
Hi Tulpa.
Welcome back Anal!
Welcome back
Your dreams were your ticket out
Welcome back
To that same old place that you laughed about
Well some names may have changed since you hung around
But those dreams have remained and they've turned around
Who'd have thought they'd lead ya
(Who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Back here where we tease ya
(Back here where we tease ya)
Yeah we tease Tulpa a lot 'cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
I can't imagine a more worthless title than 'intellectual'. Really, how meaningless must your life be if people refer to you as randomsubjectmatter intellectual?
As Republican intellectual (or, perhaps, "former Republican intellectual") Avik Roy put it, "the Republican Party is the party of white nationalism."
What a fag.
"Intellectual" is usually a self-bestowed title, although it is occasionally conferred by ideological kindred.
Moreover, I'm as certain about Shikha's inclusion in any/all intellectual conservative/republican circles as I am in Bob Dylan's inclusion in literary circles or Carter's and Peace.
Voluntary Immigration + Economic Freedom - Welfare = Assimilation, Inclusion, and Economic Growth
Forced Immigration + Welfare - Economic Freedom = Exclusion, Poverty, and Societal Breakdown
How hard is this to understand ???
You cannot have open borders and a welfare state at the same time:
Report: More than half of immigrants on welfare
Even if you're a person with an immigration fetish, unrestricted immigration with a welfare state ruins the quality of immigrants that you actually receive. Fuckin' incentives, how do they work?
sd;dr
I lol'd : )
Bravo! I laughed and will be stealing that.
"In 1994, 63 percent of Americans said immigrants burdened the country and 31 percent said they strengthened it. Now, it's the exact opposite with 59 percent saying strengthen and 33 percent burden.

And how much of this do you think is down to the fact that these millenials have been brought up in an environment in which saying the alternative is anathema and can have real and lasting impacts on their ability to put food on the table?
Also, there are pincipled arguments to be made with regard to supply and demand of labor and wage stagnation, particularly when it comes to the unskilled labor force. There are also mathematical arguments to be made regarding the number of non-tax-paying people (undocumented laborers) who can receive civil services on the backs of those who contribute to revenues, especially as those services become more and more generous and complicated to underwrite. Personally, my policy preference would be to simplify those services and make it easier to immigrate/emigrate to/from the country, but that's the opposite of the GOP's espoused positions on the matter.
In what way is Trump "anti-immigration"?
The first two points are existing American police, and have been for decades:
The remaining points strike me as rather sensible:
Trump's entire stance on immigration is no different from what the proverbial "all other advanced nations" do; you know, the kind Obama and Hillary always point to.
Give it up. Shikha has her narrative, facts be damned, and she's going to flog it into the ground.
Those millennials won't stay 18-34 forever; like most of us, they'll overcome their initial leftist and authoritarian leanings that were instilled by the public education system and figure out how the world actually works.
Sorry Shikha, welfare state or open borders choose ONE.
