Gary Johnson in Double Digits in Most States: New Poll

Former two-term governor won't make presidential debates despite historically strong showing for a Libertarian nominee.

Johnson-Weld campaign, Facebook

Note: Jesse Walker wrote up this poll on Tuesday. Read his take here.

Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson will be on the ballot in all 50 states but will almost certainly not be on stage for the presidential debates that start at the end of September. And yet a new poll shows that the former governor of New Mexico is in double digits in no fewer than 42 states. In 15 of those states, he's at 15 percent or higher, the cut-off to get into the debates. Not surprisingly, he's at his highest—25 percent—in New Mexico, but he also pulls 23 percent in Utah and 19 percent in Alaska, Idaho, and South Dakota.

The poll was conducted online by the Washington Post and Survey Monkey between August 9 and September 1; about 75,000 registered voters participated. According to the poll's results, Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump in electoral votes by a tally of 244 to 126, with many traditionally Republican states (such as Texas) now in a "tossup" scenario. The Post notes that when Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein are included in the survey, the race tightens up but Clinton retains her advantage.

The full state-by-state breakdowns on all sorts of topics are here. The economy is the top issue in the election, with about one-third or more of voters in each state ranking it highest, followed by health care and terrorism (each of which pulls in the mid-teens). Overwhelming majorities in each state believe that the country will remain polarized despite who wins the election and between 65 percent and 83 percent of respondents in each state agree with the statement, "America reflects my values LESS than it has in the past."

Which may be a rare point of consensus these days. From liberal states such as Vermont and Maryland to more conservative states such as Oklahoma and Kentucky, everybody seems to feel that "their" America is dead or dying.

That one they poll respondents got right.

How about a compromise with precedent: Put an empty chair adjacent to the podiums.

LIBERTARIAN MOMENT: This morning, professor Allen Sachs (sp?) was on Daybreak USA imparting political analysis. He was pointing out that many Sanders voters were indicating support for...and he searched his memory banks, subjecting the radio audience to several seconds of dead air, before finally coming up with the name he wanted...the man heading the Libertarian ticket, Governor Jackson.

Again, this man teaches political science.

How dumb of a human being do you have to be to rank terrorism as your top concern?

    1. Eman   9 years ago

There's more than one kind of intelligence, man. That being said, pretty damn dumb.

Johnson, just say you're going to build a wall, too, so that you can get the nativists flocking to your side as well.

"The Post notes that when Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein are included in the survey,..."

I will ask again (and again, and again) what is the fucking point of "polling" people and only asking about Trump/Clinton? EVERY FUCKING AMERICAN THAT GOES TO THE BOOTH THIS NOVEMBER WILL HAVE AT LEAST 3 CHOICES!! Ask the fucking question the way we are going to be asked in November and leave your hypotheticals and opinions out of the survey. With the start of the NFL season tonight, let me ask a poll question: Who is your favorite football team? A) Dallas Cowboys, or B) New England Patriots (sorry, these are your only choices). Fuck off pollsters!!!!

    1. Cyto   9 years ago

More than a fair point.... the only way to reliably reflect the electorate would be to include the ballot choices for each state when you conduct the poll. This would make your polling much more complex, and probably require a larger sample size to cover every state with a statistically significant number of respondents.

Somehow I doubt they are doing that.

    2. creech   9 years ago

At least this method shows that Johnson/Stein pull about equally from each major candidate when they are included.
This helps negate the "By voting for Johnson, you are helping X to win" argument.

Maybe someone can explain to him what Aleppo is.

    1. A Frayed Knot   9 years ago

Who cares about Aleppo, he supports a carbon tax! Oh wait... but he supports forcing bakers to bake gay wedding cakes... huh. He doesn't have an R or D after his name... good enough!

"What is Aleppo?" = strict enforcement of the 15% rule.

      1. colorblindkid   9 years ago

I guarantee Trump does not know what Aleppo is. I also know that Hillary knows what Aleppo is but wanted our military to go into Syria. Still going with Gary.

        1. PurityDiluting   9 years ago

"This morning, I began my day by setting aside any doubt that I'm human. Yes, I understand the dynamics of the Syrian conflict ? I talk about them every day. But hit with 'What about Aleppo?', I immediately was thinking about an acronym, not the Syrian conflict. I blanked. It happens, and it will happen again during the course of the campaign." - GJ

His ads are in fairly heavy rotation on radio in South Florida. They are pretty good, from my point of view. Very low-key. Aimed at disaffected millennials, he talks about the failed two party system and how voting for either of them leads to more of the same.

It isn't great, but it is pretty good.

Hillary is still in much heavier rotation, particularly in the "On Demand" TV slots. Her commercials are just... just... horrible. But if you are completely out of touch with politics and what has happened over the last 25 years, then maybe they are effective.

I have yet to see or hear anything from the Trump campaign.

What kind of crazy world are we living in where the libertarian candidate is outspending the Republican candidate in my state?

    1. Cynical Asshole   9 years ago

I've heard quite a few here in CO as well. Overall I think they're pretty good, but who knows what your average disengaged low information voter (the ones Hillary's God awful ads are targeting) thinks of them. Probably "Who's Gary Johnson? Probably just some fringe nutter ... I wonder when the next season of Big Brother starts?"

    2. robc   9 years ago

Clinton ads make me want to vote for Trump.

Or at least find the "take one off of Clinton" spot on the ballot.

  9. Eman   9 years ago

Gayjay is really not a good politician. That he's gotten as far as he has - without being partisan or cnarismatic in any traditional sense; one might even go as far as to say on the strength of his ideas - is encouraging, even if most of it is about this particular batch of psychopaths.

  10. The Fusionist   9 years ago

I suspect he's filling the "moderate centrist" gap in politics which Michael Bloomberg might also have filled had he run...avoiding the divisiveness and extremism of the two major-party candidates and calling for common-sense, bipartisan solutions!

    1. Quo Usque Tandem   9 years ago

      Bloomberg = Moderate Centrist?

Same guy who wanted to micro manage the population of NYC to extent of the size of their colas?

      Did I miss something?

  11. NoVaNick   9 years ago

Was just on FB and saw one of my derpster friends, who I'm sure is planning to vote for Hillary anyway, post something about GJs Aleppo Palinism. I really don't think those who care the most about this are going to support GJ anyway, but that won't stop them from using it to beat him over the head with and mock his supporters.

  12. Widsith   9 years ago

Congratulations, LP, on getting on the ballot in all 50 states. Now if you could just get a candidate on the ballot that I could stand to vote for you'd have something. Maybe in the next election...

  13. Hershl   9 years ago

He may not reach 15% but that doesn't mean he won't be in the debates.

You never know what might happen with the Commission of RepublicanDemocrats who decide who America gets to watch.

Yet his numbers continue to climb daily and that will not change.

We will keep ClinTrump from 270 and that is huge.
