UMass-Amherst: Harambe Jokes Are Racist Microaggressions, Violate Title IX

'Any negative remarks regarding 'Harambe' will be seen as a direct attack to our campus's African American community.'

Poor Harambe. The gorilla murdered at the Cincinnati Zoo after a child wandered into its enclosure has now essentially suffered a second, equally odious death: this time at the hands of humorless University of Massachusetts residential advisors who told students to stop making Harambe jokes.

These jokes "are not only derogatory but also micro-aggressions," two RAs wrote in a letter to the UMass-Amherst students who live on their floor. Failure to desist could even be a violation of Title IX, they suggested.

You're probably wondering what's going on here. Some background: Post-death, Harambe has become a popular internet meme. "Harambe died for our sins," is one. "Harambe the Gorllia Mauled By Cecil the Lion in Animal Heaven" is another. Some people even included Harambe on a list of celebrities we lost in 2016, like Prince and David Bowie. Don't feel bad if you don't get the joke—Socialist Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was confused, too.

Another flavor of the meme is "dicks out for Harambe," which mostly consists of people chanting exactly that. Danny Trejo is somehow involved. It's this iteration that seems to have deeply offended the UMas-Amherst RAs: one gathers that some students had written "dicks out for Harambe" on each other's whiteboards.

As it turns out, "Harambe" is also the name of the university's residential community for students of African heritage. The RAs—who identify themselves as "Ryan and Colleen" in their letter—are concerned that these students could take offense.

Student Jarod Sasdi posted a screenshot of the letter on Twitter. The full thing is worth reading, but here's a breathlessly tone deaf snippet:

"Any negative remarks regarding 'Harambe' will be seen as a direct attack to our campus's African American community. Please be careful what gets written on your whiteboards, as well as what you write on them. If you are not the one writing these remarks, please let us or the RA on duty know."

When asked by Campus Reform whether the letter would put an end to the Harambe jokes, Sasdi said "absolutely not."

"We will stand by our friend no matter the consequences," said Sasdi in an interview. (The friend is Harambe.)

This is all fairly hilarious. Less hilarious is the RAs' suggestion that saying or writing "dicks out for Harambe" might be a Title IX violation:

"To be very clear: using… phrases/hashtags which encourage the exposition of body parts runs the risk of being reported as a Title IX incident. These are sexual assault incidences that not only get reported to Community Standards, but also to the Dean of Students. Needless to say, it is a very serious incident—especially for a first year student!

Anyway, please be safe this weekend, and watch out for any of these phrases. We need to be sure to respect all UMass community members.

Title IX—the catch-22 of modern campus life—strikes again. There is no facet of campus life that remains undisturbed by its creeping tendrils.

The RAs are wrong, of course: federal sex-equality laws do not prohibit students from telling stupid jokes. But the mere fact that students in a position of authority would cite Title IX as evidence of self-censorship as an official requirement of dormitory life shows how destructive the federal government's guidance on the subject has been.

In any case, I would encourage students to write "dicks out for Harambe and free speech" on their whiteboards next time. As for Colleen and Ryan: uh, chill out, okay?

So, UMass-Amherst is comparing black students to a gorilla, and calling others racist? Hm...

That said, the Harambe shit is stupid and the people who keep beating it into the ground are the worst of the worst vanilla normies.

    1. AlmightyJB   9 years ago

Vanilla normie? That's a new one to me.

      1. SugarFree   9 years ago

        It's like normcore for satire.

The memes got started precisely because of the massive public pearl-clutching that happened over it--it was basically trolls pissing all over everyone's virtue-signaling.

Expect this sort of thing to keep happening as long as mass media enables colossal public limpouts over irrelevant trivia.

The RAs?who identify themselves as "Ryan and Colleen" in their letter?are concerned that these students could take offense.

The college didn't ban it -- two authoritarian RA fucks are trying to ban it.

Unless I missed something and this was the college's official position.

If the students in that dorm have a bit of spine, they will respond by ramping up the mockery of the RAs. I remember my college RA real well -- his nickname was "Bobby Buttfuck" and he was a kneejerk authoritarian who was widely reviled and ignored and mocked.

    1. C. S. P. Schofield   9 years ago

Back when I was in the process of dropping out of Johns Hopkins, I had a friend in the freshman dorms who was taken to task by an RA for having playboy style pinups on his door. Our response was to make a collage of hard-core porn, which evidently overloaded the RA's circuits, as we never heard from the twit again.

      1. DarrenM   9 years ago

I remember one entire wall being covered in Playboy centerfolds in our floor's main room when I was at Iowa State U in the late 70s.

    2. Radioactive   9 years ago

mmmm lets see, RA's = fuckwits, check...nothing in dorm life ever changes, RA's have been useless fuckwits since dorms were invented

      Time for a blanket party.

For those not born before the Korean War, a blanket party consisted of throwing a blanket over the head of the offender and hitting him with sticks until it wasn't fun any more. Fun for the stick-wielders, that is; whether or not the blanket-wearer was having fun was irrelevant.

"Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Harambe memist party?"

I'm pretty sure the Cincinnati Zoo put the RA's up to this. They've been trying to shut down the meme party for a while now.

  5. John   9 years ago

So when I hear a joke about a "gorilla", I think big significant primate that lives in the rain forests of Africa and if it is a good joke laugh at the personification of an animal. The SJWs hear a joke about a gorilla and think "they are making fun of black people".

And somehow I am the racist one? Really? WTF?

    1. This Machine   9 years ago

Well, if you can hear the dog whistle, that makes you the dog.

      1. Tommy_Grand   9 years ago

is this because the woman (and her kid) whose misconduct incited the zoo to kill Harambe were black folks? gorilla lives matter too!

"These jokes "are not only derogatory but also micro-aggressions," two RAs wrote in a letter to the UMass-Amherst students who live on their floor. Failure to desist could even be a violation of Title IX, they suggested."

So these are RAs. Not people who have any authority to push the official position of the school?

In my day, the RAs might have given them wedgies instead of writing them a letter.

In my day, I gave the RAs wedgies several times.

These RAs have the same authority to speak for the school as the student who works the mashed potatoes station in the cafeteria.

RAs have less authority to speak for the school than the full time janitors or one of the guys that mows the lawns.

    3. Bodica Slayer of Woodchip   9 years ago

"These jokes are not only derogatory but also micro-aggressions, two RAs wrote in a letter to the UMass-Amherst students"

Harambe jokes are microaggressions? The snowflakes need to clean toilets or gut fish or work in residential and commercial garbage and experience a true Mike Rowe aggression.

    4. wagnert in atlanta   9 years ago

"...phrases/hashtags which encourage the exposition of body parts..."

Exposition. I do not think that word means what you think it means.

  16. tarran   9 years ago

This reminds me of Joe's spectacular meltdown way back when.

He angrily insisted that a cartoon involving a dead gorilla and a reference to Obamacare had to be racist, Because the first thing he thought when he saw a dead gorilla was "that is a black person", and of course, he knew that everyone who claimed not to have made that connection *had* to be racist.

I felt bad about laughing at seeing an opponent so degrade himself. Either Joe was outing himself as one of the biggest racists here, or pretending to do so as a smokescreen for the real reason he was leaving here (seeing his progressivism turn everything it touched into ash). But then he crept back here with his evangelical greenism, thanking Al Gore for saving him every other sentence, and I lost what little pity I had towards him.

    1. R C Dean   9 years ago

The best part was where he tried to say that all the chimp cartoons of W could not possibly mean that a chimp cartoon might not be racist.

      1. Auric Demonocles   9 years ago

That was a pretty epic meltdown.

  17. AddictionMyth   9 years ago

OK I understand you can't say it. But you can still do it, right?

  18. The Grinch   9 years ago

Wouldn't thinking jokes about a dead gorilla to be microaggressions against black people be a racist microaggression, assuming that bullshit even exists?

Any negative remarks regarding 'Harambe' will be seen as a direct attack to our campus's African American community

That is saying in so many words that black people are apes. There is no way to sugar coat it. The writer of that sentence considers black people to be the same thing as apes. How does this person still have a job? Some black university employee needs to file a hostile work environment claim with the EEOC. Could there be a more hostile work environment than your employer thinking you are a sub human primate because of the color of your skin?

    1. tarran   9 years ago

There you go again, John, trying to paint Joe as a racist to cover for your obvious racism! 😉

      1. SugarFree   9 years ago

joe would have said the killing of Harambe was Cincinnati's dog whistle call for someone to assassinate Obama.

        1. John   9 years ago

You really must read Joe's mail because that is exactly what he would have said. And when he was done saying that he would have said people's outrage over the death of the gorilla is just them compensating for their real desire to see Obama dead.

    2. ant1sthenes   9 years ago

Don't be obtuse. The article explains that "Harambe" is the name of an African-American student group at the college. It's the name that is causing the problem, not the species.

Sounds like the university is the real racist here. Why is the black dorm named after a gorilla?

    1. John   9 years ago

Judging from the fact that they consider any attack on a gorilla to be an attack on their black students, I would say it is named that because they university considers their black students to be gorillas.

      1. SugarFree   9 years ago

That is the inescapable conclusion, really.

          3. Curt   9 years ago

I think you might've guessed the wrong kind of Indian. But, it does highlight the silliness of using the term "Asian" to refer primarily to Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese. Probably confuses the crap out of people from Indian, the middle east, most of Russia, all the -stans, etc.

            1. Zeb   9 years ago

But "Oriental" is bad. I try to say "East Asians" when talking about China, Japan and Korea (though I'm sure none of them like being lumped together either).

But Asian is a ridiculously broad term for categorizing people.

              1. John   9 years ago

It is all arbitrary. "Oriental" is only bad because a bunch of SJWs decided it was. It is the "Orient" and there is nothing necessarily racist or demeaning about calling people from there "Orientals" anymore than it is to call people from North America "Americans".

                1. Radioactive   9 years ago

I've always preferred ornamentals my self, much more decorative...

                2. Zeb   9 years ago

Yes, I didn't mean to suggest that I think "oriental" is some terrible slur.

            2. John   9 years ago

Now that you say that, yes I probably did. Ironically, my half siblings are part American Indian and I did a lot of work in law school with Indian legal aid and I never once met an American Indian who called themselves a "Native American" or anything but an Indian. So when I see Indian and it is not talking about Hindus or Kasmir or call centers or something, I think American Indian.

Speaking of Indians, this is as good a depiction of political correctness as I've ever seen from Hollywood. Behold the contrary:

the only place i've seen it considered offensive is the US. the only thing that's racist or demeaning about calling people "orientals" is that "oriental" was the standard word to use during a time period when we were fighting multiple wars with Asian countries. as a result, it was frequently preceded by "fucking" or "GD".

these days a kid saying Oriental would have no offensive tone. in the same way, an 80-year old wouldn't be unoffensive if they talked about a "fucking asian-american" or a "GD Korean".

    3. tarran   9 years ago

I googled and it turns out the Gorilla is actually named for the concept the student union is named for.

Apparently, harambe, is a swahili word that means "Pulls together for a common purpose" i.e. "community".

Teh student union got its name from the concept.

The gorilla got his name from the winning entry in a zoo contest to name their new baby gorilla. A professor who liked the word "harambe" submitted it, and persuaded enough people to support the name that it won. He thought it would be a great word to help get people to band together to save the gorilla.

So, essentially, a gorilla named "Community" got whacked, and people can't make community jokes, because the Caucasian students' union is named "Community".

    4. Detroit Linguist   9 years ago

Errr.... 'Harambe' is a Swahili word meaning 'forwards!' This is not to say that the RA's reaction isn't stupid, but the name (and the concept, and its role in Black nationalism) long precede the gorilla in question. It goes back to the sixties.

SJWs immediately think "black people" when they hear a joke about a gorilla, but they're "totes woke" and NOT racist at all...

    1. Zeb   9 years ago

Honestly, I think it's more just hypersensitivity and stupid obsession with calling out any perceived racism. Probably not actually that they associate black people with gorillas.

Although, according to their own definition of racism, which includes any minuscule and unconscious bias in word choice, they probably are racists.

    1. Trigger Warning   9 years ago

The RA's may consider the campus's African-American community to be rebel fighters, but the more likely reason is that they are actually worried that black people won't be adequately offended by people making jokes about a gorilla. Because reasons.

RE: UMass-Amherst: Harambe Jokes Are Racist Microaggressions, Violate Title IX

As we all know, anything that comes from our mouths or should anyone write anything down will be considered racist. Any disagreement with any black person in the Union of Soviet Socialist Slave States of Amerika is racist. Anyone wearing black shoes is a racist this symbolizes white oppression of black people. Anyone wearing a white hat is in favor of white supremacy. Anyone with white hair is demonstrating their beliefs in white superiority. Anyone who travels down an asphalt road is a racists because it is symbolic of white people keeping black people down. All those who commit these egregious felonies must be dealt with in the most harsh and painful way if we are to be a true color free society.
    You've been warned.

UMass-Amherst: Harambe Jokes Are Racist Microaggressions, Violate Title IX

The gorilla murdered at the Cincinnati Zoo...

The letter by the RAs in question is indeed silly. But if you're going to condescendingly ridicule people you don't lay a solid foundation for it by starting with a title that dishonestly pins those RAs' comments on UMass-Amherst as a whole (as though it was a position taken by the school's administration), followed by a demonstration that you don't know what the word "murder" means.

    1. WuzYoungOnceToo   9 years ago

Oh, and commenting on Jill Stein without knowing which party she represents...

Socialist Party presidential candidate Jill Stein

      ...doesn't help either.

  55. Eternal Blue Sky   9 years ago

"Any negative remarks regarding 'Harambe' will be seen as a direct attack to our campus's African American community."

Statement that struck the controversy: "Dicks out for Harambe"

I... can't figure out how to parse that statement into a "negative remark".

  56. JakeJ   9 years ago

  57. DFG   9 years ago

"...be safe this weekend, and watch out for any of these phrases."

  58. Dimitri Cavalli   9 years ago

The paragraph states "in case you forgot, this is Ryan and Colleen, the floor RAs." This whole episode reeks of a pretext for Ryan and Colleen to assert their authority, obtain attention, and perhaps curry favor with some unspecified parties for "recommendations," "awards and honors," and possibly "jobs."

Why did Ryan's name go first? Does he think Colleen is inferior to him and should always stand behind men where she belongs?

So liberals are now admitting that blacks really are apes. Otherwise there would be nothing racist about those Harambe jokes. Perhaps, if someone pointed how much they agree with the Klan, it might actually embarrass them enough to backtrack a bit. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Please excuse the naivete of someone who has never attended a university,...but why are mere students in "positions of authority" in the first place?
