If Your Case Against Immigration Is 'You're Going To Have Taco Trucks on Every Corner,' You Lose, Amigo
Like his candidate, Latino Donald Trump spokesman just doesn't get America, food, or entrepreneurship.
Like war, a political campaign is a series of brief, clarifying moments larded up with endless stretches of boredom and waiting. There was a lightning strike last night on MSNBC, when the founder of the group Latinos For Trump defended the Republican presidential nominee's anti-immigration policies and anti-Mexican animus last night on MSNBC.
"My culture is a very dominant culture," said Marco Guiterrez. "If you don't do something about it, you're going to have taco trucks on every corner."
If your best argument against immigration is an overabundance of food trucks, well, to quote Willy Wonka, "YOU GET NOTHING! YOU LOSE! GOOD DAY, SIR!"
To the extent that Guiterrez is speaking for Donald Trump, he shares his boss-man's near-complete lack of understanding about food, America, and entrepreneurship. And, we might add, the overwhelmingly positive feelings that most Americans have toward immigrants. Indeed, one of the great mysteries of this election cycle is how illegal immigration, especially from Mexico, ever was mistaken for a pressing concern. As it happens, over three-quarters of Americans believe current illegals should be given a path to full citizenship (63 percent) or to legal status (15 percent), while only 18 percent think they should be identified and deported. FFS, 52 percent of REPUBLICANS believe illegal immigrants should be given a path to citizenship after meeting certain requirements. Except for the Obama administration, which has deported a record number of immigrants, Hillary Clinton, who was "missing in action on immigration," and a small group of conservatives—including the nativists at National Review, who attacked Donald Trump for being soft on legal and illegal immigration—immigration isn't a problem.

What Trump and Guiterrez don't seem to appreciate is that people like immigration because it brings new possibilities into the country. Latino or Mexican culture isn't any more "dominant" than past immigrant cultures. The clearest markers of a culture are language and food. It turns out that Spanish-speaking immigrant households are learning English in precisely the same generational pattern that held for Jews, Italians, Poles, and previous newcomers. Eighty percent of third-generation folks from Spanish speaking households speak English as their dominantlanguage while 0 percent speak Spanish, says Pew Research. As for food, today's Mexican food is as American as apple pie, pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, sushi, and chop suey. As Gustavo Arrellano argued in a June 2012 Reason magazine cover story, it might even be more American.
Precisely who, other than direct competitors with bricks-and-mortar restaurants, doesn't like food trucks? That's not simply because, as we've documented endlessly here at Reason over the years, they are bringing tasty and delightful food to underserved areas from Los Angeles to downtown Washington, D.C. It's because the food-truck revolution, every bit as much as Uber or Airbnb or Tesla or any other hipper and more cutting-edge business, exemplifies something primal in America's cultural DNA. They are small businesses first and foremost, typically run on shoestring budgets, sweat equity, and family-based micro-loans. They experiment and mongrelize and are desperate to please customers. They are mobile and fast-changing, they take risks and they live with booms or busts. Forget the Okies driving pickup trucks across the barren plains in the Dust Bowl era or even the garlic-and-bagel eaters disembarking at Ellis Island in the late 19th- and early-20th centuries. These days, if you want to see not just the American Dream made flesh, but the American future incarnated, head down to wherever food trucks congregate and take a bite of the best this goddamn country has to offer. Typically on some sort of once-weird bread or pasta or pastry—pizza dough, pita, tortilla, bao, whatever—and crammed with odd-ball meats, vegetables, and sauces.
As someone who is the grandchild of immigrants from old Europe who has lived all over the country (New York City, New Jersey, Philly, Buffalo, Los Angeles, Texas, small-town Ohio, D.C.), I can tell nativists that however much you fear immigrants, you don't want to live in a part of the country where they are few and far between. They take less welfare, they cause less crime, they start more businesses, they breathe new life into a tired body politic, and more. You will lose more than elections, amigos. You will lose out on being able to enjoy a vibrant America that will be different from the one you grew up in, yes, but also better and more future-oriented.

Why was Gene such a dick to that little kid?
He was much calmer in blazing saddles
But he did get a little worked up when he said the little shit shot him in the ass.
Um... did you miss the part when he gave the kid a chocolate factory? Sheesh.
You're supposed to warn people of spoilers! Sigh, another movie ruined...
Dude, Charlie almost cost him a fortune in lawsuits, not to mention increased insurance costs, when that little shit pilfered his Fizzy Lifting Drink. I'd be pissed, too. Do you have any idea how much it costs to operate a candy factory these days?
Child labor laws are ruining this country.
All true. In a business atmosphere however, yelling and shaking violently while yelling tends to make investors nervous.
The Umppas have felt his wrath many a day.
Investors?
It was privately held.
My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. This is what I do... http://www.14earnpath.com
I just can't understand the antipathy so many feel towards immigrants when they themselves were most likely the product of immigration. We are a nation of immigrants, how can we in good concience deny current immigrants the opportunites that our immigrant grandparents and great-grandparents took advantage of?
Because they don't look like our great-grandparents.
To be fair, some of today's immigrants act differently as well as look different. The Minnesota Somalis are hella different in behavior and attitude from my Norwegian grandparents.
Something you might consider in passing judgment.
and THAT is the distinction that people like Nick - and a few in the commentariat - want to hand wave away. Previous generations came here for opportunity, not welfare since it didn't really exist, and while they congregated in ethnic neighborhoods, there was the expectation of some assimilation - learning English, moving into the broader culture, etc.
The Somalis are not going to do that. Things have changed to where many Hispanics don't have to do that. And, there is thing of illegal vs legals immigrants.
The Somalis are not going to do that.
You know this... because? That's right, you don't actually. You just assume they won't do something based on where they're from. You know, a textbook case of racism.
Because I am familiar with both the Norwegian and Somali communities and have noticed significant differences that do not disappear because somebody starts bawling "racist".
when in doubt, 'racisms!' Because no one could have possibly noticed things occurring within the Somali community in Minnesota, whether it's accusations of groups of them terrorizing neighborhoods or wanting to join the jihadists.
I know this because of seeing it. All Somalis? No but how many is enough for you to recognize they're not like the Southeast Asian immigrants or even the other Africans who come here?
Don't look at Somalis then...
Look at mostly illegal immigration from Latin America which in and of itself is seriously diverse. The majority of the people from some of the Latin countries came/come here for opportunity. From some others the majority comes here for the free shit. The people coming for the free shit seem to now vastly outnumber the ones looking for opportunity, simply because there is far less opportunity to come here for.
And it seems that legal immigration is a massive failure too. Our government keeps bringing people that overwhelmingly are suspect and will end up sucking at the government's teat, while those from countries with serious work ethics and a dislike for the big government, free shit, voting paradigm, get c0ck-blocked by a process that is so insane it looks like its intent is to prevent these people from being able to come here.
Ah, so now add Somalian to the new list of races, along with Mexican and Muslim
Conservative is a race. So is libertarianism. To the race-baiters, anyone who disagrees with them is a race, of SUB-HUMANS.
Ah, so now add Somalian to the new list of races, along with Mexican and Muslim
Do it twice, in fact.
"You know, a textbook case of racism."
Is being from Somalia a race ?
No. But the reason people whine about "Somalis" is racism. Why else would you think Somalis are fundamentally different from Norwegians? Proximity to the equator destroys work ethic or something? GMAFB.
Right, the only reason one might discern possible behavioral or motivational differences between one group of people moving to America prior to any sort of welfare system and another group moving to America after extensive social safety nets have been put in place is because of RACIZMS!
Take your fucking break and shove it up your stupid ass.
Hispanic immigration does not create a minority-to-majority change? After Europeans came and outnumbered Native Americans, the next great racial change was Hispanics out-numbering all other "minorities" and soon to out-number whites.
Normally, immigration is not a problem when people assimilate to prize our constitution, prize free market and respect our laws. Illegal immigrants are by definition violating US law. Add in immigrants voting to further a welfare state, the USA is in deep shit. We have enough prog-retards who were born here and vote, our constitution doesn't stand a chance when people won't change their old ways of ignoring corruption and not being pro-property rights.
And the filthy Irish potato-eaters were papists. And those Germans all support the Kaiser.
^This
The Somalis that make up 0.03% of the population are literally on the verge of implementing sharia law nation-wide.
I can tell you from personal experience that up close, largish (on a local scale) unassimilated groups of immigrants can make pretty poor neighbors by our standards. That 0.3% nationally can be a lot more "present" when there is a large community living nearby that isn't assimilating well.
I can tell you for a fact that from my gated community with my list of percentages that you shit flinging racist mouth breathers have no clue how beneficial immigrants are to your particular situation/location.
Harumph smug so there.
The fuck are you on? Statistics are mean, apparently.
And those bitches in Cologne were asking for it.
You joke about this, but consider that the transgender population, a tiny fraction of less than 1% of the population, has had quite a massive influence on the social, legal, and political realms affecting the other 99.9x% nation-wide.
Tyranny of the minority is as much a challenge to liberty as tyranny of the majority.
Yet most assimilated to respect the constitution, free market and property rights. As a 4th generation potatoe eater, I hate the pope and love the constitution, free market and Liberty.
To be fair, some of today's immigrants act differently as well as look different.
To be fair, you're completely ignorant or full of shit. "They act differently from us" is ALWAYS said about immigrants. The Know-Nothings of the mid-19th century said some things about Catholics that would be unseemly even coming from Trump's mouth.
Did this apply to the Catholics and whomever else, too: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06......html?_r=0
Let me know when NYT has articles that paint any other immigrant group in similar fashion. And those Catholics of yore were not straining an already-broken welfare system.
Yes, let's demonize all Somalis based on what THREE have done. Using that logic, can I demonize all whites because that asshole in Charleston shot up a church?
No, of course I can't. Because "that's different", huh?
Racist.
ThinkProgress, Kos, and the Slate/Salon wing thank you for your mindless repetition of "racist" as some form of argumentation. Is there a specific number required before something is a problem for you? By the way, I don't see people from other African nations who come here doing this sort of thing. Lots of Kenyans, Nigerians, others who have no interest in jihad. Maybe they're of some other race than the Somalis. Or maybe race is such a lousy straw man that the straw men are insulted.
Racist.
Yeah, it's definitely racist to not want the country to look like my Hispanic, Democrat-voting grandparents' shithole neighborhood.
^this
Lots more than three buddy.
But if that's not enough for you, why don't you give us your number? Tell us just how many attacks on Americans it would take for you to agree that this is a Really Bad Idea. What would it take? 10? 100? 1000? 10,000?
You seem to have no problem demonizing one person, wareagle, for what other racists have done, without actually knowing whether wareagle is a racist or not. (People can say things that sound racist to a race-baiter without actually being racists--the race-baiters' sensitivity is set far too high, in other words, such that just about everything carries some sort of racial connotation.)
And those Catholics of yore were not straining an already-broken welfare system.
Relevant... how? You're conflating two completely separate issues: your racism and your hatred of the welfare system.
fuck off with the racism bullshit. The welfare system IS broken; no emotion is required to notice that fact.
Apropos of nothing, I wish as much energy was invested in excoriating the welfare system as there seems to be whenever someone gets a hint of what they think is racism.
I wish there was as much energy invested in excoriating the welfare system as there is spent excoriating immigration instead of it being used as a convenient excuse to justify closing the border.
End the welfare state - *then* re-evaluate immigration.
But, you know, they did. "Papism" in the 19th century served the same rhetorical function that "sharia law" does today.
Quite a few of the anarchist terrorists of the late 1800s and early 1900s came from such backgrounds. Also organized crime, etc.
Some are more different than others.
Everyone knows Norwegians are all Socialists and Somalis are all Libertarian Anarchists.
Clearly we made a mistake bringing your people in and now we need some hardcore citizens of the Libertarian Utopia of Somalia to balance out your crazy big-government culture.
Seriously though: Everyone who ever makes the "but they're culture is different!!" argument somehow sees NOTHING wrong with bringing in more speech-criminalizing, nanny-state worshiping, Socialist, free-stuff-demanding Europeans into the country.
Except that agnostic whites created the freest and most powerful economies in human history.
Those who think their ex-country's system was better, just are not paying attention.
Those who think their ex-country's system was better, should have stayed there. There are a number of reasons why Europeans began leaving the British Isles and the rest of Europe to come here four hundred years ago. Hint: it wasn't because those countries were better for them.
Agreed that we need immigrants for production but I do think it is OK to enforce current law and make them adhere to the same bullshit rules we citizens have to obey.
They should have to obtain worker visa and pay taxes and be slaves the system like we are.
We really need proper immigration so we can grow our population. Economies do not grow without population growth.
Yes they do. They grow pretty well even in the absence of population growth. Look at the difference between 70 years of the Soviet Union and the United States at the same period. For 70 year the SU's economy *only* grew by its increase in input - raw materials and labor (ie population growth) with almost no increases in efficiency.
During the same period the United States had massive increases in productivity which lead to incredible wealth and our becoming the dominant economy of the time. All due to productivity increases and not population increases.
Look at China's recent leap forward - the thing fueling the new 'Yellow Peril' fear is increases in productivity that have allowed them to make massive GDP increases, not some sudden increase in birthrate, due to their now allowing a moderately competitive economy and those businesses in it snatching up and using the productivity gains that we've pioneered to get a leg up on their competitors.
We really need proper immigration so we can grow our population. Economies do not grow without population growth.
Especially if they are based on Ponzi schemes like social security or on burdening future generations with massive, un-chosen debt.
It's fear of change, when you get right down to it.
As we get older, the doors to different futures get closed. You select a profession. You move to a town. You work for a particular company. You do these things because you have an expectation for how it will play out in the future.
Back in the late 2000's, I started a consulting business. I did OK at first. But, I was a terrible businessman, and competition from South East asian contractors killed my business. Luckily, I could change what I did. A lot of people don't have that option.
So they want the change to be stopped.
Its tough to be more gangster than people who chop fingers off.
Resistance to change that might be for the worse is not irrational, you know.
Yeah, the vacuous "resistance to change" argument is a pet peeve of mine. Sometimes change is good and sometimes it sucks.
Same here.
I tell my colleagues periodically that their best decisions often involve saying "no" to change.
Says the spawn of NORWEGIAN immigrants, infecting our culture with their big-government worshiping, socialist wellfare-driven ways!!
Your people should've been barred entry.
Actually, Grandpa and Grandma were all for small government. They hated the New Deal and all the bureaucratic interference that followed it.
Are talking about profs fear of the constitution and wanting to change demographics to finally destroy the great experiment?
It's not antipathy toward immigrants, ffs.
It's anger at the utter lack of governmental action. We have a joke of an immigration policy that is based on crony capitalism and ethnic grievance mongering that is blatantly encouraging people to use and abuse our system. Taxpayers bear the brunt of this and a large number of communities across the country are in disarray from a large influx of undocumented immigrants. Their hazy legal status force them to function as second class citizens, establishing an entire subculture of off-the-books employment and consumerism. Legal Hispanic immigrants are just as frustrated as multi-generational Caucasians if you would at all pay attention to polling on this topic.
Either implement an amnesty, or force out the illegals. The wishy-washy BS we see from the establishment is why so many are supporting the latter. Ultimately, we'll likely see Trump implement a Reagan-like amnesty that is paired with a 'wall' and far greater enforcement.
But yeh.....just regurgitate the prog position that any immigration enforcement is based on hate toward to the poor brown people.
Not to mention, communities of illegal immigrants are create a dangerous situation where people are hesitant to do things like report crime or seek emergency assistance for fear of the consequences to themselves, family, friends, etc.
Yeh....Which is why polls show legal Hispancs and legal Caucasians have comparable concerns about illegal immigrations. The legal Hispanics see those exact issues in their communities. the only area where polling diverges is when deportation is raised...because invariable, folks don't want to see their illegal friends kicked out.
Come on now. Those legal Hispanics just don't know what's good for them. They need some top prog men from the suburbs or $5 million townhouse/brownstone neighborhoods to tell them what's what.
You cant believe the polling on deportation versus "path to citizenship", They are pushed, beyond belief.
The "path to citizenship" side is always sprinkled with all kinds of hoops the illegals will have to jump through, that sane people know will never happen, and the "deport " side is conflated with families being torn apart and police-state box cars.
If you ask the simple question if illegals should have to be dealt with as our laws require - if you believe in the rule of law - you will get a different answer.
I don't see it mentioned very often that a large part of the "attraction" of illegals (cheap labor, doing jobs Americans won't do, etc.) is precisely due to the fact that they are illegal. Make them legal and those particular benefits go away. This is why nothing has been or will be "done".
Or, you know, third way: Lower the government induced cost of native workers so that the market can set the prevailing wage level.
^This. There are too many government-imposed barriers to legal employment.
And Heresey to the prog narrative.
That's just crazy-talk.
It's easier and cheaper to pay Manny under the table. Now - why is that?
There are no "jobs Americans won't do". It's BS.
There are jobs that pay under the table....and under minimum wage....that are largely filled with temporary illegal immigrant labor. The illegals take those jobs because they have limited alternatives.
There are no "jobs Americans won't do". It's BS.
That's not true. There are plenty of situations where employers couldn't find Americans to do farm work.

"Can't find"="won't do" I guess.
Fine. There are plenty of situations where employers couldn't find Americans to do farm work because Americans wouldn't do it.
"Can't find" I guess.
Stop this shit. I'm working a very shitty second job right now because my wife needs me to.
If they couldn't find Americans to do the job, they didn't look very hard.
Argument from incredulity? That's a fallacy. Simply denying that something is true is not a valid argument or evidence.
You're talking to an American who would do those jobs, and has done similar jobs, and insisting there are no Americans to do those jobs.
So, good luck with that.
Listen, I don't really see this going anywhere.
Have a nice day man.
Ok, so you're just denying that this happens when it clearly does and/or you're being extremely pedantic to win a word argument.
Ok, since you asked, and I think I can clairfy, no, neither.
You, initially conflated "companies that cannot find labor at their defined parameters" with there being "jobs Americans won't do".
They are two entirely separate concepts. At no point did I deny, in any way, that if a company defines its parameters narrowly enough, Americans would be excluded.
Whatever you seem to think I am denying, I'm not.
I'm taking issue with your contention that a failure of companies to find labor within their parameters, is equivalent to no American being willing to do the job.
I've got a job to finish, so I really have to be done this time. Have a nice day.
Ok, so you're being pedantic. According to you, "Americans won't do farm jobs" is an entirely separate concept from "Americans won't do farm jobs unless the wages are higher and the work is easier." That is clear pedantry in my opinion. But I imagine we'll have to agree to disagree.
You could have easily made that point (that Americans might do those jobs if the wages were higher and the work was easier) the first time. Although if that was your original point, it's strange that you also said you were doing one of those jobs now and that the employers must not have looked very hard--implying that employers don't need to raise wages or make the work easier. It's contradictory. I think you changed your argument or moved the goal posts.
I'm not trying to be hostile--I'm just interested in the truth.
You can have the last word if you like (if you read this).
I'm sure that Americans are perfectly willing to do the work... if you were to pay them more and make the job less demanding.
I've done harder jobs for less.
If it helped my wife, I'd do the same again.
So have I, but we're the exceptions. Too many American workers are entitled, petulant little shits.
We churned through 3-4 Americans per year when I was a kid at my summer / weekend construction gig. The Mexicans on the crew were stable and I'd been doing the work since I was an undersized 13 year old. I doubt the mentality of natives has improved much.
Doesn't help that the nanny state says Americans "deserve" $15 per hour.
What's left unsaid in that piece is that those workers typically have a home to go to, and are probably on food stamps and other forms of welfare to boot.
That's the difference between today and the Great Depression. You can implement programs like the WPA and CCC--which paid about $6K a year, inflation-adjusted--and house those workers in tents and tarpaper-covered military barracks when the choice is work or starve. And not only get them working, but build public works projects that in many cases were used for decades afterward.
Take away the welfare programs, and I guaran-damn-tee those guys that walked off the job stay on it just to get enough money to eat that day.
At what wage? Farm workers are exempt from mandatory overtime pay, and in many cases from minimum wage laws as well. I am not a fan of either of these laws, but these tell me that farm wages are low, and are lower than what most American citizens can get in other jobs.
So sure, you couldn't find Americans to do farm work if you're paying them less than what they can get elsewhere. Perhaps the solution is for farmers to compete for wages instead of hiring illegal labor.
Perhaps the free market should control the wages, food prices and work loads. Oh, politicians can't be getting blamed for more unemployed and higher food prices.
where employers couldn't find Americans to do farm work
....for the amount of money they want to pay in salary, benefits, training, and/or recruitment, I'm guessing
I'm all for giving employers more freedom and I sympathize with all of the government oversight and regulations they're subjected to, but at the same time, a lot of business owners are stupid jackasses.
Every few months WSJ publishes a piece about the shortage of workers in X industry that usually amounts to some employer whining that they can't find anyone with some obscure combination of skills...like computer science/archaeology/photography...and willing to work for peanuts. (yet somehow they can still afford to hire consultants)
You completely missed his point. Employment is a two-way street and both the native and the immigrant will require, say $500 per week in take-home pay for a given job. The problem is that the immigrant costs the employer $500 per week for this arrangement while the native costs him $700 when you factor in income tax, payroll tax, costs to adhere to OSHA requirements, mandatory health benefits, etc. Why wouldn't the employer hire the illegal?
I'm constantly amazed at how would-be quickly free marketeers ape the AFL-CIO when the focus turns to illegal immigrants. You want to lard down the portion of the labor market that functions efficiently with the same rules the rest of us have to deal with? For fuck's sake man, why?
Yes, exactly. Another thing that will never be done (which I'm sure won't fly here because the group-think is anti government anything) is a national implementation of e-verify for the same reasons.
Yeah, the illegal immigrants progs love so much will be ineligible for their $15 minimum wage.....
I just can't understand the antipathy so many feel towards immigrants when they themselves were most likely the product of immigration. We are a nation of immigrants, how can we in good concience deny current immigrants the opportunites that our immigrant grandparents and great-grandparents took advantage of
You're doing that crafty Democratic trick of conflating opposition to illegal immigration with opposition to all immigration.
^^^^THIS^^^^
I want the legal immigration morass that exists today to be dealt with. I know highly skilled professional people that have been stuck in the hell created by this insane process, for what seems forever, IMO simply because they come from countries which have inculcated an ethic that is anathema to the big government machine. Those that come here looking for free shit and are going to vote for democratic party seem to never have to go through that sort of abuse.
People who compare pre-welfare state immigration to welfare-state immigration as though the same are, at best, simple minded quislings. At worst, they are disingenuous scumbags.
^This
They are much much worse. The leaders know the scheme is a demographics takeover to ultimately strip the constitution limitations from government.
I just can't understand the antipathy so many feel towards immigrants when they themselves were most likely the product of immigration.
Its no accident, you know, that all those Syrian refugees are being stuck way far away from the DC folks who are importing them. That might give you a clue as to why some people object to immigration and others don't.
One thing you don't see much of near the actual border with Mexico is open-borders supporters, other than paid political activists. Open borders types tend to not live with the immediate reality of immigration, in my experience.
Just something to think about.
Something else to think about - its quite unusual for anyone to be opposed to any and all immigrants. People are mostly concerned about immigrants from certain countries, but not others. Nobody objects to Scandinavian immigrants, that I have ever heard.
What is this 'good conscience' you speak of?
It's hard to feel like an immigrant when you're descended from Mayflower passengers.
You kinda feel like you got here first so NEENER NEENER NEENER bitches.
Or, maybe that's just me.
If you don't want to live in a freedom loving, free market loving, constitution having nation, why come here?
It's simple: Legal v. Illegal!
If anecdotal evidence has any merit, trumpster might ruin the lawn care and mexican restaurant businesses.
We had a bunch of our Mexican restaurants raided about 8 years back and the service and quality went to shit overnight with all of those gringos waiting tables.
Even though it is much easier to place the order, the drinks take forever and the food is awful.
I know, in the US before we had illegal Mexicans doing the cooking and serving we were all sober and hungry.
Nick, your gif is simultaneously topical and applicable to the content of your article. Now, if only you had been able to add alt-text explaining that that's Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka.
I've been eating Chinese food all week. It's delicious, but 3 meals a day of rice, broth, and chilis makes me yearn for tacos right now.
Culture traitor!
A Chinese place that doesn't dabble in Thai? Seriously, ask for some Tom Kha Gai or a nice hot yellow curry.
I bet you're swollen up like the Goodyear blimp with all that sodium too.
Wait until winter. Bok choy and rice or rice and bok choy.
Could always be worse. How about Korean kimchi everyday in winter when you're huddled inside from the cold with the house all closed up?
If Pew's research is correct, Latinos (regardless of the language they speak), believe the following things by fairly significant majorities:
- Divorce is unacceptable
- Sex between two adults of the same sex is unacceptable
- Having a child out of wedlock is unacceptable
- Abortion is unacceptable
The only place where their stated preferences seem to align with Democratic party platform goals is in their support for "pay[ing] higher taxes to support a larger government that provides more services".
Since Republicans (especially with the rise of Trump) have abandoned all pretense of being the party of small government, it's interesting to me that there seems to be such a widespread assumption that Democrats will have a lock on the burgeoning Latino vote, when their beliefs seem to line up much more clearly with Republicans on all of the inane culture war issues that actually dominate political discussion these days.
Except for the culture war issues over immigration and...culture.
Well, the GOP is the party that wants to keep them out of the country, keep their relatives out of the country, keep people that look like them out of the country, and want to add to the ranks of border patrol agents that often harass them when they are legal citizens because they merely look like the people the GOP want to keep out of the country... and then the stupid Hispanics go and vote for Democrats! Which is why we have to keep them out of the country!
Yeah, by and large (painting with a broad brush here, of course) Hispanics tend to be pretty culturally conservative. They'd be fairly easy pickings for the Republicans if it weren't for the immigration issue.
I'll ask again here, as no one seemed to know last night: Does Hillary even have an immigration plan, or is her immigration plan to say nothing and watch Trump self-destruct? I really see no benefit to offering one at this juncture.
Economic issues almost always trump (tm) social issues.

The people looking for the free shit seem to far outnumber those looking for opportunity, likely because opportunity keeps declining as the big government machine keeps expanding its claws into everything.
The good thing about these statistics is they show a clear pattern of assimilation. The ratio of small government, fewer services preference to big government, more services preference increases with each passing generation. First generation Hispanic is 12/81, second is 22/72, and third is 36/58. It's a good trend. The bad news is that if you have immigration levels beyond a certain point you will outstrip this assimilation process (which is obviously a very long process) with the result being that the electorate will become increasingly favorable to a big government message. The problem isn't immigration per se or where the immigrants are sourced, the problem is when the levels of immigration outstrip what a society can absorb without negative consequences.
I am an immigrant and naturalized citizen myself and fully agree with this.
I can see that (say) 10,000 people from my home country can be imported every year and will assimilate into America without causing problems, especially if we are picky and eliminate the free stuff crowd.
Instead of 10,000 people, we imported 1 million every year (even if we were picky), they would cause problems, and would end up importing their dysfunctional culture from their own country.
Volume is everything.
Text of Trump's immigration speech:
http://dailycaller.com/2016/08.....mmigration
Take a few minutes to read it directly without having the media spin it for you.
Excerpts:
She's been less substance, less policy, more just Trump fearmongering as of late.
Which is probably not a bad strategy, to be honest.
"Free shit" trumps religion?
Every day of the week from what I have observed...
Their beliefs don't match their actions though: higher divorce rate, abortion rate, more out of wedlock births, don't know about homosexuality (they do have higher HIV rates though). The GOP may have as much of the Latino vote as it can realistically get.
Fucking revealed preferences. How do they work?
I reckon votes would be one way.
And their beliefs are rapidly catching up with their behavior. Hispanics in Texas are far more like to support abortion and gay marriage that white Texans. Honestly this Hispanics are natural conservatives argument is considered laughable by most people at this point.
Right, for the most part, I only hear it from hack GOP establishment types. Right or wrong ethically, them pushing for amnesty of easier immigration won't help them - or conservatism - anytime soon.
Hispanics in Texas are far more like to support abortion and gay marriage that white Texans.
That surprises me. Got a link?
One thing to keep in mind about the "Hispanic" community in Texas is that a goodly chunk of them are "Tejanos", meaning their family has lived in Texas for 150 years or more. They are a different culture than Mexican immigrants, even second and third generation Mexican immigrants.
The last polls I saw, a majority of Latinos supported gay marriage these days. Do you have a recent source indicating the opposite?
No his "data" is vague recollections from the 2004 election probally. Hispanic voters are increasingly indistinguishable from other Democratic coalition members at this point.
And therein lies the contradiction of the GOP. They could be pandering to this group (especially Cubans), but there is a large group of nativists who refuse to accept them.
In 2008 the Republicans nominated the face of immigration reform as their candidate. He got basically the percentage Trump is polling at. The real contradiction is why libertarians who supposedly support smaller government (giggle) want to import hundreds of million of people who are staunch supporters of huge government.
Fucking principles, how do they work?
Like a suicide pact?
In LA, Latino immigrants have to pretend that they are Mexican to get a job. Seriously.
In L.A., speaking 'Mexican' to fit in
So certain people in Los Angeles want to behave more like Mexicans and only hire those that do so. I don't see how that's any of my (or your) business.
Wait until you have to pretend to be from Mexico to get a job, and it will be your business.
Fucking principles, how do they work?
Well, if foreigners want the US to be a less libertarian country, I guess libertarian principles dictate that the US should be a less libertarian country.
The best way to fight this is to allow them to become successful. Most people put their liberal "principles" aside when the rubber meets the road and they have to start actually paying taxes.
That's a great idea- know any ideas on how to make third generation Hispanic immigrants who read Spanish at a ninth grade level into doctors and lawyers.
*English
Flat tax! Everyone pays ~10% tax. no exceptions!
Flat muggings and rapes too! It's only fair, right?
How about regressive mugging and progressive rape?
I know a flat tax scares the living shit out socialists/progs because everyone has skin in the tax game and will have something to say about bloated government. I say make tax collection day one day before Election Day.
What foreigners? People that have lived here long enough to become citizens? Their kids who were born here, raised here and have lived here their whole lives?
Yeah, my principles dictate that if a community wishes to govern itself differently than I would then they are free to do so.
Yeah, my principles dictate that if a community wishes to govern itself differently than I would then they are free to do so.
What if a community wishes to govern you differently than you would? Because we aren't talking about some other country - I could care less how other countries govern themselves, but I care a lot about changes that could be made to this country.
What foreigners? People that have lived here long enough to become citizens?
Honestly, the US is still a goodly ways away from having imported cultures and ideologies reach a critical voting mass. Other countries are not so fortunate. Something like 25% of the teenagers in France are Muslim. Because many of them aren't assimilating worth a damn, that portends profound changes for France in the future.
"America" shouldn't be viewed as merely a collection of citizens, but as a culture. And cultures can change for the worse. IMO, changing American culture to look more like most other cultures on this planet would be a change for the worse. Because people don't just bring yummy food with them, you know.
Yep. For example, over 50% of Iraq and Afghanistan think that honor killings of women are sometimes acceptable.
How many of the immigrants that we accepted from these countries think the same?
Generally people take actions to promote their principles. So it kind of makes one wonder how much small government is a principle for libertarians (for instance Nick Gillespie and Peter Sunderman are clearly opposed to any action that would hurt the political class while shrinking government).
Actually we are basically in agreement libertarian principles are basically support for open borders. modern libertarianism is completely bored by small government activism and craves the status points that social leftism confers. This adds up to a poltical movement that differs from leftism only in the fact that it pretends to misunderstand the political impact that open borders will have on the USA.
"Libertarians are liberals who want to buy legal pot and don't want to pay taxes."
The platform does not say open borders nor ebola carriers and suicide vests welcome. But Republicans read it that way. They also think the 14th Amendment starts with "All ova fertilized..."
Which shows how terrible Pew Research is since Hispanics in the US have out of wedlock birth at twice the rate of Whites.
Among non-Hispanic blacks, the figure is highest, at 72.2 percent; for American Indians/Alaska Natives, it's 66.9 percent; 53.5 percent for Hispanics; 29.4 percent for non-Hispanic whites; and a mere 17.1 percent for Asians/Pacific Islans

There is a big difference on what a person will tell a researcher and what they actually will do
Easier to simply poll the Pope iv Rome and generalize to his Trilbys.
Are we supposed to think that it meant taco trucks and only taco trucks?
"My culture is a very dominant culture," said Marco Guiterrez. "If you don't do something about it, you're going to have taco trucks on every corner."
Whether you think that meant taco trucks and only taco trucks or you think you're supposed to think it meant taco trucks and only taco trucks, taco trucks is all that was mentioned. Feel free to assume it also meant something about the capital gains tax and who would be a good choice to replace Scalia and whether or not Carolina's even going to win their division this year.
He even says culture at the beginning. Food seems like one aspect of it, no? Maybe I'n not being enough of an Aspie here.
I live in Austin Texas, and we already have taco trucks on every corner. **Spoiler alert**. It's AWESOME!
I was just in Austin and I concur with the awesomeness of your taco trucks (though the best tacos I ever had are still at a farmers market in central VA). Your weather, on the other hand, was just awful.
Sorry, summer in Texas can get pretty brutal. You are somewhat lucky though, It was a fairly mild year thanks to El Ni?o.
I have read the preceding and give it public faith.
The best way to advance the libertarian cause?
Pew Research Center: Hispanic Politics, Values, Religion
sure, but that would deprive Nick of a reason for banging his anti-Orange drum. Has the libertarian case for Hillary been made yet?
I seem to recall her husband talking about stemming the flow of illegals, and Herself thinking a wall was a good idea. And never mind that two attempts at floating an amnesty solution - under W and then O - were both shut down after negative public reaction.
Nick's anti-Orange? I don't recall him ever writing about Ulster Unionists...
That explains the pro-Wonka picture. Wonka is well-known for enslaving orange folk.
The link doesn't work. But just from that excerpt, since it says highest among immigrant Latinos, wouldn't that indicate a declining trend over time?
Also, I care more about revealed preference than stated preference. Trump's success (and Clinton and Sanders on the left) doesn't exactly convince me that white voters care much about smaller government.
Reason has managed to mangle the URL somehow. Try this one:
http://www.pewhispanic.org/201.....prc-number
Yes, of course, many white voters don't care much about smaller government. Why, then, import even more potential voters who care even less?
It might be best for the long-term health of those states if the people of Nevada and Arizona were to build a wall to keep Californians out, but it would still be wrong.
and once more, illegal and legal immigration are conflated. Sure, they are totally the same things.
And suddenly breaking the law is automatically wrong and makes you a bad person.
Perhaps not, but it does automatically make you a criminal
A good taco is hard to find!
How about a good bearded taco?
Somehow, I don't think the heartland is worried about taco trucks.
I'm sure the LA city council will take care of the food truck problem.
"My culture is a very dominant culture," said Marco Guiterrez. "If you don't do something about it, you're going to have taco trucks on every corner."
I'm assuming by "my culture" he's referring to American culture - the can-do attitude referred to in the article where if you want something you go out and work to get it rather than sitting around on your lazy ass waiting for someone to recognize your entitlement to have it handed to you - and he's doing his damnedest just like all the rest of the parasite class to see to it that something does get done to get that attitude stomped out. We're from the government and we're here to help you - and don't you even think about horning in on our racket by trying to help yourself. The Lord may help those who help themselves - we'll shoot you in the goddamn head you try pulling that shit.
Spot on!!
Nick: It is spelled G-U-T-I-E-R-R-E-Z. The way you're spelling it, you're starting the word guitar.

Talking to Nick is like talking to your senile grandmother. No matter how many times you correct her, she's going to keep babbling the same nonsense over and over again.0
And calling you one of those lib-troublemakers because she doesn't know nor care to find out what libertarianism is.
Read? for 20 whole minutes? The whole point of the Kleptocracy platforms is that they take several hours to read, so nobody bothers. Folks believe what they imagine they surely MUST say.
first trump eats pizza with fork and now this. the man is a menace...and his little friend too.
"To the extent that Guiterrez is speaking for Donald Trump, he shares his boss-man's near-complete lack of understanding about food, America, and entrepreneurship. And, we might add, the overwhelmingly positive feelings that most Americans have toward immigrants."
There are a few other things I don't think people on the left "get" about Americans and immigration.
1) One of them is that "Latino" is neither a race nor a monolithic entity that sees everything the same way. When elitists on the east coast disparage white, blue collar workers for their racism against Latinos in supporting Trump, what many of those elitists don't realize is that when you're talking about white, blue collar workers in places like California and Arizona who support Trump, many of the people you're talking about are, in fact, Latinos. Fourth generation Americans of Mexican ancestry are often indistinguishable culturally from Fourth generation Americans of Irish or Italian ancestry.
Fourth generation Americans of Mexican ancestry are often indistinguishable culturally from Fourth generation Americans of Irish or Italian ancestry.
You have had an Irish taco, Ken? Didn't think so.
You just drink whiskey with it, amirite?
Irish whiskey? All other kinds of whiskey is for pussies. The Irish national bird is a bottle of whiskey. The national song is about drinking. Get it... The Irish like alcohol and we don't have tacos.
The problem is that fourth generation is kind of loading the dice. There really aren't that many fourth generation Hispanics in America. There are a a lot of third generation Hispanics in America and they are very much different than third generation Italian immigrants to the point were a large segment of them don't speak fluent English.
2) Whether you like or don't like immigration (legal or otherwise) and whether you think the government should enforce its immigration laws are two separate questions. It's remarkable how often those two questions are conflated--as if being pro-immigrant meant that giving up the notion that the government should be able to control who can and can't come across our borders.
Imagine if this sort of conflation happened on other issues. What if being pro-marijuana legalization were almost universally painted as the belief that adults should be free to sell drugs to children? More precisely, imagine what it would be like if the elitists claimed that the only way to stop abuses of the sex offender registry was to legalize child molestation and rape--so those who criticize the registry are actually pro-molestation and rape.
It's actually possible to oppose abuse of the registry and still oppose child molestation and rape.
It's also possible to be open to immigration and think that everyone should only be able to come in through legal channels, as well.
Everyone who thinks that opposing illegal immigration and being a racist is the same thing is demonizing an awful lot of Americans--many of whom are undoubtedly white, Latino, blue collar workers themselves.
Yep. And it's interesting to read the text of Trump's immigration speech. Take a few minutes to read it directly without having the media spin it for you.
http://dailycaller.com/2016/08.....mmigration
Excerpts:
Most of this is not controversial to the vast majority of people, and even to many libertarians.
He's been spun that way on numerous topics.
I've been especially vocal about the characterization of his vow to bomb ISIS--even if there are civilian casualties?!
OH MY!!!
Actually, Hillary would never be so stupid as to promise to only bomb ISIS if it meant no civilian casualties, and Obama has actually killed hundreds of children in drone strikes according to this website that tracks civilian casualties due to drone strikes:
http://tinyurl.com/of6gq8v
You're right.
The things Trump says on these sorts of topics are often not controversial.
The thing that's controversial is the fact that Trump says them.
Neither Obama nor Hillary would actually say these things.
They just do them--and never talk about it themselves.
Instead of reading another paranoid looter speech, why not spend 20 minutes reading the Libertarian Platform in English or Spanish at LP.org?

RE: If Your Case Against Immigration Is 'You're Going To Have Taco Trucks on Every Corner,' You Lose, Amigo
This is nothing more than employing sound reasoning and logic. If there was a taco truck on every corner, I would soon give into my addiction to Mexican food, especially their magnificent burritos. This is an addiction that has ruined my life. I would spend my entire paycheck in a day or two chasing down taco trucks for their highly addictive and destructive food. I ended up losing my job, my wife and kids, emptied my bank account, my 401k, and ended up sleeping under bridges, bypasses and homeless shelters. But I did not start out on burritos. No, I stared out with a simple taco, which, as we all know, leads to harder substances especially burritos. I started my addiction, but soon ended up in places like New Mexico, Arizona and California. The sad thing is I finally recognized I had a problem when I woke up in Indonesia with a half-eaten burrito in my mouth. It was then I realized I had a burrito problem and sought help. Thankfully, there was a Burrito Anonymous there, and after months of painful withdrawal, (Yes, I went cold burrito.) I was finally able lick my addiction. So let this be a lesson to all of you out there. It all starts with just one taco truck to turn one into a Mexican food junkie.
"If you don't do something about it, you're going to have taco trucks on every corner."
Sounds like a feature, not a bug.
Stay away from Mexico City.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_street_food
There is the seen, which is the immigrant guy who does your lawn so cheaply that it's uneconomic to own a lawnmower.
And then there is the unseen, his family getting welfare benefits.
If you and the rest of the people who use his services would pay him enough to support whomever he brings with him, there would be much less squawking about immigration.
And of course somebody will remind me that there are many natural-borns drawing taxpayer paid benefits. That is so, but I don't understand why we need to import more.
And setting aside the moral problem of that guy taking any welfare in the first place, comes the problem of welfare subsidizing his ability to compete with American workers. This leads to perverse incentives where the US takes in more lower quality immigrants than would otherwise be the case.
In fact, many illegals get paid in cash under the table, especially for this kind of work. So there are no deductions for federal income tax, social security or medicare, directly giving the illegal an advantage of about 20% over a legal worker who has to pay all those taxes.
There's a sucker born every 10 seconds.
You must mean the law abiding American who is trying to follow the law and take jobs so he/she can pay taxes and live but must compete with illegals who take cash money and don't pay those taxes? Americans are sick of being the suckers.
Voting libertarian is voting against the dole. This removes the incentive with 36 times the clout per vote.
"Except for the Obama administration, which has deported a record number of immigrants..."
Jesus Nick, do we need to explain to you every time you post on this subject that this is literally bullshit? They changed the reporting criteria which has inflated his deportations by a massive amount. It isn't a real statistic, SO STOP USING IT!
Compromise: Nick will still keep using misleading statistics *but* he'll incorporate more gifs, memes, and internet buzzwords.
There is a strong case against illegal immigration. Immigration itself it fine. Those that knowing came here illegally should never be citizens. I am for easing immigration restrictions, this does not mean I am do not think illegal immigrants should become citizens. The act of coming here illegally makes them criminals and I am not for allowing criminals to immigrate to the US.
PS, I have never seen a Taco Truck except on TV and the movies.
They are extremely overrated and a lot of them serve basically garbage ingredients but they are super high carb so I can see how rubes would be impressed. It's also the extent of multicultural experience for someone like your average Reason writer. Which is what makes me so contempous of modern libertarianism- I've actually lived a pretty cosmopolitan life five year in Europe, grew up in Houston, Texas where whites are a minority so I understand what ethnic Balkanization looks like and I also understand how Disneyfied your idea of the world must be if taco trucks is the only externality you associate with large influxes of foreigners.
Translation: Viva Trump! Viva el ku klux!
Democratic Party- the party of slavery then and now.
How about, the Democratic Party- more Kkk members than any major political party in US history.
Those aren't immigrants. They are refugees from christianofascist dictatorships kept as Hoovervilles by US exportation of superstition and terror. If they could choose their own laws we'd be emigrating there!
Like Venezuelan socialism? Paradise! How do I get my address change form?
A commenter on the NYT article (linked above by Eric Bana) re: the farmer regretful of hiring American workers, had this to say:
"It's all fine and well to be unafraid of the physical demands of the job, but where will these folks be when their back goes out after lifting these boxes all day? No health plan, no disability, no insurance... Personally, i'd rather collect unemployement than risk dibilitating injury for 10 dollars an hour."
The reason for my pro-immigration stance. Neatly bundled with a pretty red bow tied around it.
You're being... sacastic?
Taco Trucks rhymes with Starbucks and both on every corner? Discuss . . .
Yankee culture is a very dominant culture, and if Trump doesn't build a wall around Queens, he'll soon have veal and oyster pie trucks on every corner, and chowder will flow in the streets.
Why would you waste perfectly good oysters on a pie?
Americans aren't against Immigration. They are against ILLEGAL and uncontrolled immigration. Though we are a nation of immigrants, our country survived quite nicely from the 1920s to 1965 with practically no immigration...
http://www.prb.org/Publication.....rends.aspx
http://www.pewhispanic.org/201.....-to-today/
Two completely different subjects.
That's wrong.
It's also irrelevant. The political debate is primarily about illegal "immigrants", not immigrants as a whole. Illegal immigrants make far less than legal immigrants or Americans. So, what the average immigrant does or doesn't do isn't relevant to what this subgroup of immigrants does.
In any case, as a libertarian, I have no problem with having open borders--once the right to freedom of association has been restored in business and housing, and once the welfare state has been abolished and taxation greatly reduced.
"once the right to freedom of association has been restored in business and housing, and once the welfare state has been abolished and taxation greatly reduced."
Who are you expecting to restore freedom of association? Who are you expecting to abolish welfare and reduce taxation greatly?
Yes, it does seem unlikely, doesn't it? So why import still more people who will grab still more welfare?
We need to do whatever it takes, even proscribe freedom of movement, to ensure that welfare goes to the American born.
I'm not expecting anybody to restore freedom of association or abolish welfare or reduce taxation any time soon. Which is why we shouldn't have an open border policy any time soon.
The "Taco Truck everywhere" comment was more about his concern over exploding Latino population. He's not against food trucks or businesses, as far as I can tell.
The more interesting point was "my culture is too dominant". This is nothing to wave off, for any number of reasons.
"The more interesting point was "my culture is too dominant". This is nothing to wave off, for any number of reasons."
Can't beat 'em? join 'em. The last thing you want is to be a member of a subordinate culture. That's for losers.

Ann Coulter: "I've Stumbled
Upon a Massive Cover Up"
Dear Conservatives,
According to the U.S. government, the illegal immigrant population has flatlined at 11 million people for the last decade.
However, after conducting a nationwide investigation that took her to the frontlines of this crisis, Ann Coulter has come forward with alarming evidence that proves the true number of illegal immigrants who have crossed our border has exploded past 30 million.
And it could be as high as 60 million people.
Even more frightening, Coulter is now levying a shocking allegation against Washington D.C.
She accuses the government of intentionally covering up the truth in order to hide a historic catastrophe that is barreling towards us.
In this short video, Coulter is going public with everything and naming names.
She exposes a Federal program that could cause crime and poverty rates in your town to triple virtually overnight.
And I strongly suggest you examine her findings immediately.
This way, you can avoid being one of the countless Americans who will be blindsided by this fast-approaching, $261 billion threat to your financial security and personal safety.
Didn't Ann Coulter film "Triumph of the Will"?
You are thinking of Eleanor Roosevelt.
Trump - illegal aliens you want to give a "Merit System" have...
Before an illegal alien receives his/her first paycheck or cash payment, they have committed some 26 Federal, State and Local laws.
1. They conspire to cross the border illegally. (1 count)
2. They hire a coyote or are provided passage by a Drug Cartel in exchange for guided passage into the USA. (1 count)
3. They cross the Border with a coyote and in many cases smuggle drugs. (1 count)
4. They travel, illegally, to their destination or to a destination determined by their "smuggler." (1 count)
5. They obtain fraudulent documents via identity theft, or via manufactured documents?.driver license, green card, social security card, birth certificate (each count a felony). (4 counts)
6. They look for work using these documents. (1 count)
7. They fill out work documents falsely, i.e., Federal and State IRS forms, SSN forms, Immigration forms, Workers comp. forms (each a separate felony. (6 counts)
8. They drive on our roads without a legal license, registration, insurance. (3 counts)
9. They get paid via check or under the table, thus conspiring with the employer to defraud the government(s) via the use of false documents. (2 counts)
10. They open bank accounts via the use of false documents in violation of Federal Law and the Patriot Act. (2 counts)
11. They obtain housing via the use of false documents. (1 count)
12. They obtain a car or truck via the use of false documents. (1 count)
13. They obtain healthcare via the use of false documents. (1 count)
14. They secure public service benefits via the use of false documents ? food, housing, healthcare, etc. (3 + counts)
At a minimum this list shows that they commit at least 28 crimes of identity theft, conspiracy, obtaining false documents making false statements, fraud, violation of Federal and State and Local laws, etc.
AND THE LIST GOES ON.
The above list correctly demonstrates that they are not simply in violation of our laws just for crossing the Border, they are in violation for multiple misdemeanor and criminal acts in just a very short period of time and they continue to compound their violations via the passage of time, via falsification of documents, false statements, perjury and the list goes on.
I see a vibrant future where one half of the country tracks down and punishes the other half. As long as your papers are in order, this arrangement should put you on easy street.
Excuse me... "defraud" the looter political State? Is that like "defrauding" a mugger by beating him with his own weapon instead of handing over your wallet?
Trump's Deportation Proposal Isn't Nazism, It's A Senate Proposal Called 'Touchback' Amnesty..
Marc Thiessen, former speechwriter to George W. Bush, in an appearance on The Kelly File Friday night, said that what Mr. Trump is saying when he talks about sending them back is an actual amnesty proposal called "Touchback" aka "Touchback Amnesty". It was a Senate proposal that narrowly missed passage in 2007.
It was endorsed by the New York Times but the National Review was opposed because they called it amnesty. It simply means if illegal immigrants want to stay here, they can go back home and then receive expedited approval to come back in and stay.
Marc Thiessen explains in the next video and, as he said, Trump's rhetoric is more fiery than what he's actually proposing.
send to the criminals in DC who are committing treason unless
they stop the commie's EO's Amnesty is Treason.

It is just amazing that a once principled Libertarian Party, that would be screaming about a millions strong influx of welfare eligible white immigrants, legal and illegal, into the Libertarian opposed welfare state, has been reduced to poodle status, by the fact that the same immigrant influx of welfare eligible is Hispanic and Democrats will call them "racists" if they don't do a submission pee on the carpet.
Basically, Reason is engaging in virtue signalling. They simply don't understand why an unceasing flow of low income illegals will do to libertarian principles.
Huh? Another GO-Pee infiltrator who has not read the 20-minute LP platform? The GO-Pee platform takes 4 HOURS to read even without puke breaks. The Dems', 3 hours. The admittedly stupid LP plank on immigration, like the 2nd Amendment, puts the meaty part in the last clause.
Hank?did the required reading. The 2nd amendment says buy all the guns I want, but I can't use them for 2nd amendment purposes, as my government has used trillion dollar taxes to buy armies with superior weapons. Further, as these superior weapons will inevitably suppress hand gun wielding opposition, my government can do whatever they please, and I will pay for it. So the Libertarian Party's NAP actually stands for "Non-Aggressive Poodles."
The only reason anyone in Austin Texas lives north of the river is fear of gaining weight off the awesome South Austin mexicano food. (That and to not live too near Williamson ku-klux Kounty)

Ditto if your case for open borders is a poll conducted by a social justice organization headed by a former white house Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships chairman and boardmember of People For The American Way.
Seriously, there's any number of reputable polling organizations you could pull plausible numbers from to support your argument, and you go with PRRI?
