On Leslie Jones vs. Milo Yiannopoulos: Supporting Free Speech Does Not Mean Endorsing Nazism
There's anti-political correctness, and then there's harassment.

This should go without saying, but in case it isn't clear: one can and should support the free speech rights of Nazis—without actually converting to Nazism.
Sometimes this line is blurry, like when college libertarian groups bring controversial speakers to campus—Milo Yiannopoulos, for instance—with the explicit goal of violating a college's speech-chilling norms and policies. But sometimes this line is less blurry, like when a pack of ardent racists send vile and threatening messages to a black actress because they perceive her to be an enemy in the battle between the alt-right and the social justice warriors.
This is what happened to Leslie Jones, breakout star of the new Ghostbusters movie. (Confused? Read Kurt Loder's review of the movie and overview of the controversy here.) Yiannopoulos gave the movie a negative review, got into a fight about it with Jones, and then the Twitter trolls descended, subjecting her to all manners of abuse.
Yiannopoulos shouldn't be on the hook for other people's bad behavior—he says he didn't spur the trolls to take action—but was nevertheless banned from Twitter after CEO Jack Dorsey talked to Jones.
Spiked's Brendan O'Neill—no fan of the anti-speech left—gets it right in a recent column that staunchly rejects the treatment of Jones:
The comments made about Ms Jones have been genuinely nauseating. She has been called the N-word. She has been sent photographs of apes. It's like something from the 19th century. No one who believes in racial equality and basic human decency could fail to be moved by her pained tweet following two days of relentless racial slurs: 'I feel like I'm in personal hell. I didn't do anything to deserve this. It's just too much. It shouldn't be like this. So hurt right now.' For any black person to be subjected to racist abuse is horrific; for it to happen to a woman whose only 'crime' was to land a breakthrough role in a female-oriented summer blockbuster is particularly despicable. Ms Jones hits the big time and is instantly bombarded with racist smears — awful.
These attacks on Ms Jones speak to something more than the raucousness of Twitter, which can often be a good thing, certainly to the extent that it allows unheard, eccentric and potty voices to be heard. It speaks, more importantly, to the derailment of the important task of challenging PC. Tragically, for those of who us want to prick PC from a genuinely liberal and pro-autonomy perspective, the anti-PC mantle has in recent months been co-opted by the new right, or the alt-right, as some call them. These lovers of Trump (they call him 'daddy') and conspiracy theorists about feminism (whose wicked influence they spy everywhere) have turned being anti-PC from a decent, progressive position into an infantile, pathological, Tourette's-style desire to scream offensive words out loud, like the seven-year-old who's just discovered the thrill that comes with saying 'f**k'.
It's one thing to say that awful, racist, evil people deserve the same free speech rights as everyone else. It's quite another to actually engage in awful, racist, and evil behavior.
The fact that Twitter is the battleground for this fight introduces an additional complication, since Twitter is a private company and exempt from the burden of enforcing the First Amendment, though conservative users certainly have the right to demand fairer treatment. Right-leaning users who contend that Twitter overlooks harassment when leftists are the perpetrators have plenty of evidence to support that claim. (For an essential take on harassment and hypocrisy, read Freddie de Boer's latest.)
It's still true that the left overreacts to the problem of harassment on campus—an environment completely under leftist control, where mild criticism of liberals is often denounced as an example of literal violence, subjecting conservatives and libertarians to formal sanctions at the hands of administrators.
But harassment is a real problem: particularly on Twitter, where no one is safe from the trolls. We ought to be able to admit that—criticize it, even. That's free speech, too.

All of which illustrates the well-known fact that there are certain obvious limits to the kind of "speech" that should be tolerated in a civil society such as ours. See, for example, the documentation of America's leading criminal Troll and criminal "satire" case at:
http://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/
In this regard, Reason editors, as well as members of the academic community at large, should vigorously condemn the outrageous "First Amendment dissent" of a single, isolated, liberal judge in that case, as well as the rulings of three Texas courts that have held that state's online impersonation statute "unconstitutional," again on "First Amendment" grounds.
No, it's not a fact at all. There are no limits to the kind of speech that should be tolerated in a civil society. Fuck off, statist fuckpig.
Clearly, Mr. Falcon's view is a minority one that he is entitled to present in a polite and civil manner. Whether he has done so is subject to debate. The least that can be said is that if anyone crosses the line and transgresses the boundaries established by the distinguished legislators, courageous prosecutors, and highly learned judges (many of whom are themselves former prosecutors) of this great nation, then he should certainly be aware that he is risking prosecution and jail.
Just like how any black person who calls a cop "bacon" should be aware that he risks being shot in the head and the cop getting off, right? It's almost like properly established laws can still be immoral or something.
Respect for law and order certainly starts in the classroom, and if provocateurs are allowed to send out inappropriately deadpan Gmail "confessions" mocking distinguished academic department chairmen, then it is no wonder that tensions increase and little incidents occur. Fortunately, New York authorities have taken important (even if not yet sufficient) steps towards eradicating this form of "discourse" from our society.
Liberalized that for you.
Thank you, friend.
That it. I am reporting you Crusty. You are on the list you devient pinko bastard.
Suicidy should also be banned for regularly (correctly) pointing out that the only way to save America is to euthanize all the progressives. It is not polite or PC at all.
relevant or maybe it isn't who cares.
I thought the rape scene went really well.
Wait, do Trumpalos really call Trump "daddy"? That is the funniest thing I have heard all day.
Yiannapolis or whatever his name is does. It is part of his flaming Limey queer thing. He is one of those people who I think went gay as a way to shock his parents. Since just being queer doesn't shock anyone anymore, he does flamboyant things like troll feminists and call Trump daddy
But it's funny as hell. You should watch Milo sometime, he's hilarious.
He is. I think the fact that Robby can't see that just shows how uptight he is.
He's quite skilled at pushing buttons.
I believe the correct phrase is yanking chains.
He is more than anything free. He just doesn't give a fuck and says what he thinks. I don't understand how a magazine that claims to be libertarian can't appreciate that. What a boring life it must be for the reason staff to be so bullied and chained to their social and cultural biases.
Like anyone who speaks in public, I think some of what he says and does is great. The rest I disagree with. I prefer other speakers, but he has a place.
You don't have to agree with someone to appreciate them
Why is saying what you think a virtue? Isn't the whole point of your frontal lobe myelinating so that you have the self-control to stop yourself from saying every dumb thing that pops into your head?
Saying what you think isn't the virtue. The virtue is thinking what you want and not letting the opinion of others or cultural sanction cause you to think otherwise or hide how you feel by not saying it.
Sometimes the crowd is wrong. And we need people who are free enough and brave enough to say that.
The best thing anyone ever linked me to here was this essay, What You Can't Say, in which he says the following :
Wood does it suck going through life worried that you might think or say something everyone else might not like? Doesn't if nothing else get boring?
I agree. Weather or not Milo says a particular thing that I agree with, I love how he infuriates the language/thought police. I think that the PC fascism we're seeing is the biggest threat we face, and coincidentally it's what's driving people to folks like Trump and Milo.
That it why I had mine removed. Plus, I can get into all the best Hollywood gigs with just a dull stare.

All I got from scanning this article is that Brendan O'Neill and Fruit Sushi support PC censorship, and are sympathetic to black people, which is synonymous with democrat.
That is an eerily good sendup of at least 58% of the forthcoming comments on this article.
so far, you're like 60% of the comments all by yourself.
You've been so emotional since you transitioned, Dennis. It must be the rehandle hormones.
baby you just like to tease me.
Why are they so quick to denounce the people sending her pictures of apes, but totally let Jones off the hook for not shutting down her account earlier to avoid the "harassment"?
Because I stupidly, naively believe in a society in which people can engage in public discourse without other people going out of their way to say the most hateful shit they can think of to them, just because they have the right to. I know, I know...I'm old fashioned like that.
See, it's times like this I wish I was John, so I could read minds and intentions. Then I could say something like, "Look MJG, I know you think that being able to shout 'NIGGER!' at black people without anyone calling you an asshole in return is the most important right and freedom in the world, but you're going to have to get over it."
But I'm not John, so I can't say that. Sad.
Also, fried chicken.
Watermelon.
And saying 'axe' instead of 'ask'.
Hey, that's aks, not axe.
Lizzy Borden asked her black friend, do you think I can come over to your house for dinner tonight, and her friend said, why don't you go home and ax your parents.
Mmmm. Fried Chicken. I think I'll head to KFC in a while.
You don't. Need to read minds. You just need to take people at their word and follow their logic to its conclusion. Since most people do t understand their own positions much less the rational implications of them, they think you are reading their minds by holding them to the rational consequences of their positions.
It only looks lik mind reading if you are stupid
Hey, Kreskin John, can you apply those amazing mentalist powers to yourself? Why are you so obsessed with gays and transsexuals?
Because I really want to be one but am stuck in body and mind of a straight white man. I try to wear lingerie but it just isn't any fun.
Damnit, John, you continue to surprise me. I throw out a trolling attempt, albeit an obvious one, and you respond with a playful joke.
BTW, you don't have to be gay or transsexual to enjoy lingerie. It is very nice against the skin.
Yeah. I didn't say it was unpleasant. Just not what I had hoped it would be.

Apparently the squirrels agree. Creepy.

All I got from scanning this article...
At least you didn't read it. That's 4 FAGZ.
I am unclear as to the point of this article.
You obviously don't speak Social-Justice-Semaphore
No, it's perfectly clear:
It's ok when the left sends vile racist sexist imagery to conservatives. But if the left is on the receiving end then it's not cool at all and free speech should have limits n stuff.
No, when the left is on the receiving end, it's the same as putting a bullet through them.
Hehe, you said "receiving end."
The sad part is that Reason thinks what Rico says bears repeating.
They could just post his byline and call it good. We'd get the gist of it without all the wasted bandwidth.
It was a fair criticism and analysis of an incident of disgusting and racist speech.
An incident which actively derails well-meaning attempts by reasonable people who are trying to push back against coercive liberal anti-speech hysteria.
The whole article seemed pretty clear to me.
No, the author is the one actively derailing well-meaning attempts by reasonably people who are trying to push back against coercive liberal anti-speech hysteria, by implying that Milo said more than he did and that inviting Milo to speak at a college campus was a "blurred line". Any attempt to stop the PC juggernaut is stymied by people acting like this, so terrified of saying anything that might support a racist that they undermine their own commitment to freedom. The reasonable answer would have been to publically declare that Milo did nothing wrong (which is true) and to call on liberals to stop crying and demanding action when someone says something mean. You can't fight PC if you don't actually fight PC and instead just kind of point out that sometimes it goes too far, but mostly it's fine.
I dunno, Soave whining about some unimportant bullshit about some whiney actress in a movie that's tanking at the box office. And she;s the 'breakout star'? I saw that film, and no......no....... she's not. She was ok though.
Oh, how naive i was to think maybe Robby/Reason would just say, "let's not take sides in this"
Yeah he/they took the side of...reason. What side are you on?
Yeah he/they took the side of...reason. What side are you on?
Yeah he/they took the side of...reason. What side are you on?
dammit. the triple post was not my fault.

Leslie Jones found a pretty good way to be safe from them.
His handle is fuckTyler. He knows what's up.
Also, orange juice is a great song.
The only people who are allowed to bully, harass, intimidate, and threaten to kill others on Twitter are "Prince" Alaweed's army of throat-cutting jihadis, and the BLM army of cop-killing Obama mommas.

Yes, I know that's nothing that would come even close to raising an eyebrow around here. But liberals tend to freak the fuck out over the slightest provocation. I mean if someone twitted 'Oh my gawd, black people shit', you don't think that would raise questions about it might be a racist comment? I think the answer is a definite yes.
Fuck, at least I don't even know wtf Milo said, or what Jones said. Until then, I don't have any opinion.
We already know the answer to that question, but for the benefit of some newbies who may be hanging around.
The freaking the fuck out is the point. That's how they win arguments, by shouting over, or otherwise shutting up, their opposition.
ok drake is the reason i started hating light skin people again smh -- Leslie Jones 2:23 AM - 13 Feb 2012I'm sure she'll banned from tweeter any minute now.
Yeah, that's not racist at all. Hate, heh, it's not the same when the left say it. There's no double standard.
It is equal opportunity hate. I think she means light skinned black people as well as whites.
Since criticism of liberals is literal violence, liberals can respond back with violence as a means of self-defense. Since non-liberals can expect actual violence from liberals, they should report liberals to authorities to prevent the attack before liberals can report them to authorities.
Since criticism of liberals is literal violence, liberals can respond back with violence as a means of self-defense.
I'm sure that's the whole point of conflating mean words with physical violence: so that when they start actually committing real violence they'll be able to rationalize it and justify themselves. Fucking pricks.
They denounce it as violence because they want a justification for their own support of violence
Remember what Mao said: any act by an oppressed person is an act of self defense against his oppressor.
And since they're the vicars of the oppressed and those of us who are not with them enablers of the oppressor, this means anything they do to an 'oppressor' is self defense.
It's one thing to say that awful, racist, evil people deserve the same free speech rights as everyone else. It's quite another to actually engage in awful, racist, and evil behavior.
Indeed. Which makes me wonder why you think this line is blurred when Milo, who has not engaged in awful, racist, and evil behavior as far as I know, is invited to campus specifically to challenge campus restrictions on free speech.
It seems that inviting Milo to campus is two steps removed from acting like an asshole. So why does it blur the line, again?
I guess I'm missing the point where Milo Y specifically incited people to racism. Did I miss that part? Because I'm pretty sure Jesus doesn't support all the things done because he said something, either.
I'm baffled by what seems like a gratuitous smear of the campus conservatives who invite Milo.
Why are they being accused of blurring the line between supporting free speech and "actually engaging in awful, racist, and evil behavior".
It comes off like Robby has a mental tic, where he can't even mention conservatives without accusing them of doing something bad.
The thing is that Milo has been a one man wrecking crew of SJW propaganda and routinely destroys leftists in debates using strong reasoned arguments backed by empirical data. He regularly challenges the left on their own turf and completely disarms their identity politics arguments by being a flamboyantly gay conservative.
This is TERRIFYING to the left, thus why he named his tour the Dangerous Faggot Tour.
Soave is just virtue signaling to his fellow leftists that he's all about their cause even though he writes for Reason.
I hope selling out is worth it Robby!
Milo is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo dreamy.
I do wish he'd lay off the expositions on his personal sex life.
Yeah, I could do without that and his fellating of all things Donald, but watch his BBC debates against SJW Feminist Warriors, he dismantles them repeatedly.
Crusty is just jealous cause he gets so much tail.
Yeah, I could do without that and his fellating of all things Donald, but watch his BBC debates against SJW Feminist Warriors, he dismantles them repeatedly.
Crusty is just jealous cause he gets so much tail.
The fact is some flaming Limey queen has more balls and subversive spirit than the entire Reason staff. What has Robby ever done for campus free speech other than scratch his chin and tell the victims of censorship that sure it was wrong what happened but it is not like it is that big of a deal?
Hey! Sometimes he runs his fingers through his hair!
You make an excellent point John. A lot of people will bitch and wring their hands about their rights being trampled, but how many really stand up to anyone, ever in the real world? This Milo guy apparently does. Which is more than I can say for most people.
I think that's why the line is blurred...
The line between defending an asshole's rights and not endorsing the asshole behavior is not blurred when people are acting like the racist assholes here.
I am very safe from the trolls on twitter.
I don't tweet.
I feel sorry for the people who labor under the delusion that twitter is a must-be platform for communicating.
I felt sorry for twitter shareholders until I learned that there second largest holder is Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud. It should be noted that his name is far too long.
His friends call him "Al"
And they can call her Betty.
Yeah, that name alone chews up most of the character limit in a tweet.
Can he even tweet his own name?
I'm sure he's happy with his investment. (How is Twitter stock doing?)
Amen.
I don't tweet and what really annoys me about Twitter is that it makes me feel like a fogey because I don't get it. I don't get the appeal of it. I also don't understand how to decode these twitter exchanges where someone "destroys" someone else.
Fucking kids. Twitter is exactly why they should be orphaned and put into the mines.
That and fucken Pokemon.

It's only a thing because it makes easy controversies. Twitter allows journalist to find that one idiot 16 year old saying something outrageous in record time. Outrage made easy.

I have no Twitter, despite being a part of the generation most commonly associated with it. News like this comes off to me like stories from a far-off strange and mythical land that I can only get a second hand account of.

Robby is perfect for the alt-right beat. But I still am not sure what alt-right even means. Under the definitions I can find online Reason is an alt-right publication with alt-right authors and all you Tulpas here are alt-right commentors. I suppose I can understand that this alt-right business is just a reaction to the media dominance of progressive left social politics. The PC/SJW has been crammed so far down our throats that the only way to be a radical is to come from the right. I guess that's alt-right.
Funny that censorship is how the mainstream deals with speech it doesn't like. To a radical being censored is encouraging. It means you're irritating and forcing a reaction. These alt-right reactionaries aren't going away. Thanks for being alt-right Soave.
*Robby's head explodes*
I trust you read that breathless, hyperventilating write-up Robby gave of the alt-right a few weeks ago?
Robby just hasn't fully realized that he is already owned by the dark side. All the social signaling in the world won't save him now. You want to know how I know this is true? Why, just look at that hair.
Never look directly into the hair.
Flowers = hair
When you look into the hair, the hair also looks into you...
Look directly into the dumpster fire
alt-right is really just the pro-Trump portions of the right media and blogosphere.
Shapiro isn't a fan of trump. Is he alt right? I don't know, that whole area is strange
But I still am not sure what alt-right even means.
Alt-right = any group that Progressives/ SJW's hate.
It is just a catch all for anyone on the right the cool people don't like
La Wik
Much like racist, the "Alt-Right" in "they are Alt-Right" is anyone to the right of *you* that you want to sneer at as a racist troglodyte.
All the good guys are called Alt-Right, just as all the good guys are called racists.
Exactly, it's a way for the lefties to associate anyone to the right of Marx with the thirty-two actual racist fuckwads that still exist in the U.S.
I think alt-right is anyone who is not a progressive/liberal but also not a Republican (pre-Trump Republican). So if you are more than a mere speedbump to the out-of-control social justice truck, as in you actually oppose their policies instead of merely being passive obstacles, that's "alt-right". Basically I think it means the conservatives and libertarians who aren't useless.
That's supposed to be a blurry line to converting to Nazism? Pretty blurry writing, Robby.
Par
As I mentioned above, it comes off like he just has this mental tic, where he can't mention conservatives without getting some kind of dig in on them.
Because he's a symptom of Reason's desire to get more millennial. Try as he might, Robby has a hard time shaking the claim that he's a closeted SJW sympathizer.... for some completely unknown reason.
some completely unknown reason.
Yep. It's a conundrum.
Mild criticism is literal violence, got it.
You're advocating violence!
It's only violence if you're criticizing liberals. Criticizing trolls is self-defense against violence. Or something like that.
And saying shit about white people is perfectly okay because, ummm...power, wealth, oppression...basically because some white people have so much money that when you average it all up, even I am an oppressor.
And nothing black people say (even "I hate them tiny-dick slanteyed fucks.") can be racist because...slavery!! Nice for them, eh?
Wait a second. Someone said something mean to someone else on the internet?!?!??!? *clutches pearls*
Honestly I've never understood why anyone gets so bent out of shape from mere internet commentary. When celebrities, any celebrities, express their extreme shock and sadness that people would say mean things about them online I find it hard to empathize. If I became a public figure tomorrow, or if I put out a youtube video and people say mean shit, so what? It's the fucking internet. I often hear the producers of podcasts and the like crying about "trolls", a group of people whom they broadly define as anyone who disagrees with them or levels any criticism, whatsoever.
People will say mean shit if they don't like the cut of my jeans or the color of my shirt and I don't wade into the internet thinking that's not the case. Leslie Jones should grow the fuck up or unplug her interwebs.
Look at this fucking Tulpa. Tulpa-splaining like that can only come from a place of extreme Tulpa privilege.
You really put me in my Tulpa-place.
Well, saying "something mean to someone else on the internet" is the same as pointing a gun at them and pulling the trigger. We need protection against that! We need safe spaces from violence on the internet!
When you have to say it goes without saying " maybe you don't have to say it.
When you have to say "When you have to say "it goes without saying" maybe you don't have to say it" maybe you have to quote it in order to say it shouldn't have had to have been said.
He says it should go without saying, but the world being full of idiots, a bunch of idiots out there don't know better.
I suppose it could just be a sign of how old and not with it I am, but I still don't get why any grownup should care what some anonymous person says in a "tweet". It can't hurt you, and you can bet that 99% of those people don't have the balls to say it to your face.
Acting all hurt and upset doesn't stop the bullies, anyway; it eggs them on. It's what they're after. Treat them for what they are: unimportant. Nothing will sting them more. Laugh in their faces. What are they gonna do? Ms Jones ought to tell them "Yep this n----r is on her way to the bank to deposit yet another check. Nuthin' you can do about it! Hah!"
You shouldn't.
You should try and grasp that the media has no "grown ups" in it any more. The expression, "Who cares?" is no longer in the lexicon.
I suppose it could just be a sign of how old and not with it I am, but I still don't get why any grownup should care what some anonymous person says in a "tweet".
Because grownups disappeared when getting dressed up for church did. We're a nation of adolescents.
I get it. The lack of formal attire in church is causing every one to age-regress.
Its a symptom, yes, of a bigger problem.
Comfortable clothes?
Call me old fashioned but people are getting just a little too lax for my taste.
Just the other day the teller at the bank winked at me as he said, 'take care'.
Was he hot?
I don't...remember.
/narrows gaze.
An insult isn't meant to hurt a person through their logical faculties. It's emotional.
I agree with your second paragraph.
Well sure it's emotional. And it only matters if I respond to it that way. IOW it's up to me.
Responding, sure. Again, I agree with your second point.
But you were mystified that an adult would care why someone tweeted something mean to them. Well, adults also cry, sir. Adults also cry.
Adults don't cry because some distant, faceless stranger posted random, silly, childish nonsense at you. If a friend or coworker did it, or if it was relentless, over months, I can see it. I understand why a trans person, getting stared at and whispered about CONSTANTLY, would be upset. But a few jerks on the internet sent mean things to you for like two DAYS? Come on, I get more annoyed when a fly gets in my car and won't leave. If you can't handle anyone ever saying anything bad about you, you need to stay off the internet entirely. In fact, you need a legal guardian.
^ THIS ^
Acting all hurt and upset doesn't stop the bullies, anyway; it eggs them on. It's what they're after.
And the irony is that Jones could have squashed this entire thing early on by just blocking the first few trolls and not responding or acknowledging the others. Instead she went into a full-blown meltdown that lasted for hours.
Internet trolls have no ideology. They just descend on shit like this like flies on... well, shit.
Social media is a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Every adult knows that. If you don't want to be criticized or can't handle all the nastiness, STAY OFF SOCIAL MEDIA and refuse to discuss it. Go live your life without it. No loss.
Woah, woah, woah, Robby! Didn't you assert, just yesterday, that campus was firmly in the hands of Big Jew and their Evangelical fellow-travelers?
Or did I just experience another Berenstain/stein Bears quantum shift?
I grew up in the 'e' universe. I do not give a fuck what anyone else says.
You grew up in both 'universes' the 'e/a' is a side effect of the knurl caused by the overweight in this part of the plenum.
We are working it out and reality should re-assert itself shortly. Until then, enjoy the peace and quiet.
Let's say Jones is one of the censors, and accordingly attacks others and promotes policies that infringe speech rights. Is it wrong to break censorship rules, and if not, is it wrong to do so by attacking her in a way that mirrors her original attacks? May that be a form of (self) defense? (As a side note, do you know that she is "innocent"?)
By the way, has anyone here written about lex talionis as an individual (natural) right?
"No one who believes in racial equality and basic human decency could fail to be moved by her pained tweet following two days of relentless racial slurs: 'I feel like I'm in personal hell. I didn't do anything to deserve this. It's just too much. It shouldn't be like this. So hurt right now.' "
Yeah, I know if a gaggle of assholes had me cornered on Twitter iwoukd both care, and continue checkong in to make sure they were still assholes?
Oh wait, no, I got that exactly backwards.
Twittering is a fundamental human right!
*Turns off Leslie Jones' phone, or at least blocks Twitter for a day*
My god I am the greatest humanitarian that has ever lived!
I would say you deserve a Nobel Prize, but we all know Hillary is already has 2017 on lock for her courage in the face of warmongerfacist Trump. It's her turn.
Oddly enough, Leslie Jones is consistently the one good thing I've heard about the movie.
Milo thought otherwise. The shitlord.
Saw it. She was ok, but nothing special.
What is the point of this article anyway? Who's the Nazi?
I think an article like this should at least include an example of the exchange between Milo and Jones. But that's just me, I can't really decide on what's going on here with no facts represented.
No one actually responds to "evidence" anymore; its the 'reaction to the public reaction' that matters. The Web Has Cried Foul! Robby must chime in and offer his slightly nuanced version of the exact same opinion every other Right-Thinking person has. THIS IS NOT OKAY AND MILO IS BAD AND SHOULD FEEL BAD
Actually examining the "thing itself" and asking whether it merits anyone actually giving a shit *at all*?....
or asking whether - maybe - people are even possibly misconstruing events for the sake of jumping on a popular bandwagon.... ?
no, that sort of thing simply isn't done. One must go where the herd goes.
I dunno. Upthread, Sevens seems ready to facilitate an entire academic symposium on it.
For me, I remember that we live in a world were pediatric cancer exists.
*where
And no edit button exists.
Reported for reporting that no edit button exists.
Kudos. Barbarian,
That sounds like something only an EVUL RACIST, SEXIST, HOMO/TRANS/ISLAMO PHOBIC CIS-HETERO WHITE MALE SHITLORD would do.
The "Nazis" are the tweeters who used incredibly racist rhetoric to harass Jones. We can agree that they still have free speech rights, like the Illinois Nazis, but should sharply denounce them for being yuge assholes.
It's really an easy essay to understand. So many of you are deliberately misreading it so you can get your hate on.
Neither the New York or LA Times provided any examples of Milo's tweets (and the NYT claimed that Gamergate was a vicious attack on women gamers).
A Milo critic linked me to Vox, where Milo was quoted as calling Jones such vile things as ugly, fat and looks like a dude. And, he entitled his review "Teenage Boys With Tits": Wow, it can't get much worse than that...
So I pointed him to the Twitter feed of Leah Boss. There's also Dana Loesch and Rita Panahi from Australia - all three of these conservative women, two white and one Persian, who daily are subject to extremely vile comments. Instead of running to Jack, they retweet the offense material so everyone can see what asses the left is. Many of the original tweets get deleted.
Add Michelle Malkin to your list. Some of the comments she's received have made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
This seems like an excellent place to stick in both the republican and democratic party platform policies which declare that "We must condemn..." such speech that is all icky and stuff.
I've been attacked relentlessly online but never once did I want to shut them down. What I wanted was for someone to defend me and no one ever did. Even when I asked for help. What hurt me most was not the bullying or the people who'd say, "What are you in third grade or something?" when I complained about it but when people would say, "Too bad there's no moderators here to shut down these jerks." I didn't want a moderator to shut them down, I wanted a 'good' person to say something. Oh well. Fortunately people are learning. I've seen tremendous progress out there.
*blinks*
I think you want the encounter thread down the hall.
As an addict I find your handle offensive, but I have to wish to censor you. Without people to spout opinions that I find dumb, repulsive, or just plain wrong this place would be boring. I appreciate you, Tulpa.
*no wish to censor.
For want of an edit button we get Tulpa.
Awe... poor shreeky. Let's have a pity party for poor little shreeky on the intertoobz.
You sound like a trick-ass mark.
"What hurt me most was my own inability to get over harmless words, and my pathetic demands that someone defend me, as if I were incapable of doing it myself."
Can't tell if you are serious.
What I wanted was for someone to defend me and no one ever did. Even when I asked for help.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWcASV2sey0
Have you ever considered that you are indefensible?
What. The. Fuck. I hadn't heard that people were literally calling referring to him as "daddy". Unless it's intended to be tongue in cheek, that's... really twisted and fucked up.
Everyone needs a safe space.
The more you know...
The more I know, the less I want to live on this planet anymore.
Life is much better when you know less and guzzle some Campari.
That sounds like something Milo would do, half tounge in cheek, half to rub in everyone's faces that he is gay.
"It's one thing to say that awful, racist, evil people deserve the same free speech rights as everyone else. It's quite another to actually engage in awful, racist, and evil behavior."
Soave, stick to living on the proceeds of your family's shitty shampoo, cause, this writing gig is not for you.
I would imagine this is just part of the full court press that the left media is doing for this new Ghostbusters. Sony and Feig played them like a fine feminist fiddle and they have given this remake more free press. This is the first fully orchestrated SJW summer blockbuster ad campaign. Don't think it won't be the last.
I have no desire whatsoever to watch this movie, Luckily, neither do my wife and daughter which makes my life easier.
And Dan Ackroyd can go eat a Canadian peach.
J. Alfred Prufrock is my boy.
Is Canadian peach a euphemism? Do peach trees even grow that far North?
Ontario!
I was in Ontario... once.
You mean British occupied Murica?
Have to say, after watching the Redlettermedia review, I do want to try Ackroyd's vodka now.
Didn't the movie already come out?
According to the G here, it was a "middling, at best" opening-weekend. (~$50m)
I would have thought that was a good #, being that the average movie is around $100m these days, and 50% on opening weekend is a good target... but =
if it tails off quickly, it could be a net bust. So i'm not sure the "SJW ad-campaign"-idea has proven itself a winner yet.
Sexists not going to see it is part of the on-going story. The big feminist revision movie failing suits the left media even more so than successfully browbeating the critics of the movie leading up the release.
lol
If it fails, it wins! It is proven right - the only reason anyone didn't see this movie is because THEY HATE WOMEN.
I also did not see "Tyler Perry's = Madea's Neighbors from Hell", and i now realize it is because i am probably racist.
It wins from their narritive perspective. It fails in convincing other movie producers to make more of the same. The woman behind getting this green lit is no longer with the company. This movie was a pet project idea for her. Having it fail will mean everyone else in charge is going to give the side eye to the next person to propose such a thing.
Also, the massive amount of money being thrown at it is because Sony desperately, desperately wants some kind of 'cinematic universe' to cash in on a la Marvel. Sony Pictures hasn't been doing so well lately.
That's the funniest thing about seeing progressives rally around this movie. It's just as much a shameless corporate stunt as it is supposedly 'feminist'.
It cost a fortune to make and market. If it isn't a huge hit, the execs who green lighted the project are toast.
It only failed because of mysoginy
^This. If they had just remade GB with women, I doubt anyone would have given a damn, and the movie would have succeed or (more likely) failed on its own merits. Instead, it is very declaratively Women Ghostbusters, in the promotion if not the movie itself (no intention to see it, so I don't know or, frankly, care), attracting the fawning praise of the prog-crowd (I can't take seriously any review that instructs skeptics of the concept to "Get over it" in the headline) and the wrath of anonymous alt-right morons.
True story, one of the gaming news outlets complained that BattleField 1 didn't let you choose to play as a woman.
Their argument was "come on guys, it's 2016, Call of Duty lets you do it, get with the times".
For those of you NOT keeping score at home, DICE's Battlefield 1 is an historic war shooter that takes place in WWI.
Let that sink in.
It's gotten to the place where people literally want to change history to stroke their modern sensibilities.
Let's not mention the fact that if we start whitewashing history, it actually diminishes the message of how male dominated/race dominated things used to be. Imagine if we started erasing the history of slavery because talking about it was offensive to blacks.
A similar complaint was made about the upcoming Zelda game, if I recall correctly. The usual whiners were objecting because you can be woman-Link or something.
I have it on good authority (the internets!) that the best and most creative way to end discrimination and start the much needed national conversation about racism/sexism/homophobia is to co-opt pre-existing intellectual property and arbitrarily graft the grievance-du-jour on it. See, for example, the newly gay Iceman, lady Ghostbusters, gay Sulu, lady Thor, black Captain America, and so on.
Well, that, and the whole "woman-Link" was a result of Japanese humor not translating across languages.
The first time I saw Zelda on my nephew's Wii, I thought Link was a chick. Just like peter pan.
Link has always been an androgynous faggot. A strong, brooding hero like him could get all the pussy he wanted in Hyrule and more, but he remains taciturn and lets his hair grow out and doesn't even lift (except to break your pottery and disrespect your property rights). Maybe he's asexual. Maybe he has no genitalia.
Ganondorf is a man's man.
There's some interesting subtext going on here.
Full disclosure: The Legend of Zelda made me gay.
Shouldn't that be "Captain African American?"
When I was a kid, Marvel introduced an African-American Bucky when Rogers was briefly replaced with some uber-patriot Dirty Harry wannabe.
More innocent times.
but Sulu is gay
Meh, if we're going to start complaining about ahistoricity in Battlefield 1, the short video of in-game content I saw seems to suggest EVERYTHING IS WRONG ALREADY. Everyone running around with machine pistols and shockingly agile tanks? Yeah, that's World War One.
Let's not mention the fact that if we start whitewashing history, it actually diminishes the message of how male dominated/race dominated things used to be.
I kind of have to wonder if maybe that's part of the point. If they admitted that things are a whole lot better now than in the past, then that could ruin their current narrative that we're still a hideously racist/ misogynistic nation and culture. It's like they can't admit that many of the problems of the past that the civil rights and feminist movements were first started to address have been solved. Because it would ruin their whole "oppressed victim" narrative. Not to mention lose out on a shitload of money.
It is not like that. It is that. Their entire sense of self worth comes from this idea that they are this enlightened elite fighting for justice and equality against the rest of us racist troglodytes. If they admit things are much better than they were and getting better every day, then what do they have to feel smug about?
" Imagine if we started erasing the history of slavery because talking about it was offensive to blacks."
Bravo.
Isn't that exactly wht they are doing by eliminating flags with confederate symbols and removing statues of confederate rulers and changing the $20 bill etc. hide the past so no one knows the truth. I think some guy by the name of Orwell wrote a book about that kind of thing, something called 1984.
He who rules history can rule the future.
The entire Ashley Judd thing with Arkansas fans a couple of years back was about promoting a movie.
It's not doing terribly well in theatres. 45 million opening. Think it had something like a 150 million budget to create then 100 million extra to advertise. The reviews are either negative, overtly girl power, or faint praise. It may well end up in the negatives. Most certainly it will be forgotten two years from now.
Compare to Deadpool.
Deadpool is good? Original?
Deadpool was fantastic. I'm not going to say everyone will love it (because there is no single movie everyone loves), but I recommend to anyone not offended by the f-bomb to go see it. Odds are you'll like it.
Oh, I went back the next week. It's very good.
My reaction to this article:
https://imgur.com/a0b5JLy
Is that Andy Reid's reaction to realizing there were only 5 seconds on the clock and he had all of his three timeouts left? I've never seen such an above average coach have such a glaring flaw in one area like Andy Reid and clock management.
So much THIS.
Eagles fan here. You're so right, goddamn it. Thank god he took that skill to KC.
That makes three of us that I know of.
But he is so good at putting together and preparing a team. In a league full of ass clown coaches who seem to get hired and keep their jobs for no apparent reason (I am looking at you Jeff Fisher), Andy is a serious coach who always produces quality teams competitive with anyone in the league.
But yes, that whole clock management thing. Hiring him is like buying a sports car that is otherwise perfect but breaks down the moment a hot woman you have used it to pick up sits down in the passenger seat.
Classic great regular season coach - it's not a coincidence the greatest stretch in Eagles history in the SB era was due to him - but meh playoff coach.
That is not fair. He won a lot of playoff games. He went to five straight NFC title games. You have to win at least one playoff game to get to the conference title game. Reid is not Marty Schottenheimer.
Also, it is a quarterback league and he had Donovan McNabb. Donovan wasn't bad, Reid made him look a lot better than he actually was.
In Andy's press conference he said, "I have to do a better job".
It is why players love him. He never throws them under the bus, even when they deserve it.
Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail.

What the fuck is a Twitter?
It's where brains go to die.
That's short for twit-terrorist.
Could somebody please give us the tweet that got Milo banned from Tweeter? Or admit that he wasn't banned from Tweeter for anything he twitted, but for some other reason?
Actually, scratch that. Why am I violating my firm personal commitment to avoid all things social media?
Is H&R not social media? I get that these handles aren't real identities, but it is so much the same thing.
It's social media the way FIDOnet chatrooms were social media in 1983.
The Twatter has had it in for Milo for a long time because of the sin of making fun of SJWs and other assorted leftist loons.
From what I understand, this happened:
@Lesdoggg Hi Leslie, following, please DM me when you have a moment
? Jack (@jack) July 19, 2016
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey then tweeted at Jones asking her to send him a private message. Milo has since been removed.
Same here RC. The only time I look at twitter is when there is a link on here and half the time I cant figure out what it means. The only twits worth reading I have seen come from Iowahawk. The rest aren't worth my time.
From an article today on Vox:
"At least the new Ghostbusters has a hot black guy in it"
(In response to a collage of cast pictures) "Fat and ugly, ugly, ugly, fat"
"Rejected by yet another black dude"
Jones:
Ok I have been called Apes, sent pics or their asses, even got a pic with semen on my face. I'm tryin to figure out what human means. I'm out
Milo:
If at first you don't succeed (because your work is terrible), play the victim
EVERYONE GETS HATE MAIL FFS
That's it! All that was provided by anyone.
Consider her hair. Robby is showing in-group bias.
Every time a member of the reason staff informs points out that racism is not a cool thing you must take a drink.
Disclaimer: Drink responsibly. Excessive drinking can result in impotence or death. Or both.
Yup. My ex ended up in a drunk tank last night. I'm pretty sure Trump was to blame.
Is she still single? Asking for a friend.
More or less, but she floats around in a Blanche Dubois kind of way.
You and I have the same taste in women.
Good you aren't starting a drinking game where we have to drink every time Reason posts a Trump bashing article. Alcohol poisoning, I hear, is no fun.
People would die far sooner from asphyxiation because they'd never even get a chance to breathe.
when saying perfectly reasonable things gets you called a racist and sexist and homophobe and bigot, then that opens the door for more people like Milo to gain traction for their more outlandish takes. Milo is the result of the left's anti-free speech/political correctness, not merely its latest villain.
Yes!
I dismiss any statement that makes an accusation of racist/sexist/homophobe
And I consider simply dismissing the person.
90% of the time the person making the statement is incapable of adult conversation.
95% of the time the statement itself has no value or is simply wrong.
Did this article contain any actual content or ideas? Did I miss something?
Here it all is in one sentence: "People criticizing other people can get really nasty and hurtful and while they are free to be nasty and hurtful, other people are also free to criticize the excessive criticism."
It's tautologies all the way down.
I thought this was good =
What behavior is he referring to?
Speech!
So = its OK to (pretend to) support the RIGHT of Bad People to have 'free speech'.
It is NOT OK when Bad People exercise that right.
Robby a staunch defender of the right to defend rights. He is a knee-jerk-denouncer of anyone who actually exercises them.
It is a journalistic slight-of-hand in which a person can have cake and eat it at the same time.
Right, I saw that too, and it shows that Robby's transition to progdom is nearly complete.
Transition?
Robby is nothing close to a prog. I think you've spent so much time on Reason that your perspective is skewed. If Robby were prog-par-excellence, progressives would be far less unpleasant.
(Full disclosure: Robby made me gay.)
Look, Rico typed this article on his phone between Michelob Ultras at the RNC bar. I'm impressed that it isn't just entirely a block quote from another article.
Robby is cosmoranto for "tedious leftist apologist." Robbys can always be counted on to justify the bad behavior of SJWs and lecture their victims.
Yes, and other people are free to criticize the criticism of the people criticizing other people.
Twitter has a block button. Use it.
Reported for being reasonable.
YOUR DEMAND SUGGESTS THAT VICTIMS HAVE TO ENACT LABORS AND THAT IS NOT OKAY
Nah, I'm telling her to get her people to censor her twitter account for her. She's an actress in a big summer blockbuster. No reason for her to be running her own social media accounts.
Her handlers can't hypocritically disparage white people with the same gusto. If you want something done right...
People need to learn to have thicker skins. The more you whine about harassment (however that's defined), etc., the more you perpetuate it. People who bully get their kicks out of making people cringe and cry. That's the whole point.
I am so encouraged to see fat-shamed fruit sushi finally condemning the racist Twitter mobs where he got his journalistic start.
God knows libertarians have a lot to learn from wettest-intellectual-diaper on the internet.
What does it say that ENB and Robby's favorite "big thinker" is The Whiner's Robespierre?
That they're both Obama/Sanders/Clinton SJW JournoList leftards pretending to be libertarians, and not doing a very convincing job at all.
Well, libertarians have always bristled at the accusation that they are right wing, and any institution that isn't explicitly right wing...
Can we do a toofer and send Sushi and ENB to the WaPo in exchange for Balko?
...the WaPo has clones of them by the bushel already. Have you never dipped into the bottomless well of millenial wisdom they call PostEverything?
"But harassment is a real problem: particularly on Twitter, where no one is safe from the trolls."
Harassment is a problem, but not in the ether that is the digital world where one can walk in and out at will, selectively block others, etc. A person has too much control over what they see or don't see on the internet to claim they are being harassed. I regularly mumble 'oh, fuck off' and make things that annoy me disappear.
I get the notion too many people are losing touch with the divide between meatspace and the artificial digital universe. Speaking of which, can someone explain to me why Pokemon Go is a thing? You go around collecting digital entities because why? Are digital entities that can be reproduced infinitely somehow in short supply? What exactly do you do with one when you get it?
Answer: Fap.
I'm a gamer and I don't get it either. There was a Star Trek Next Gen episode where everyone was playing an addictive game that was actually a brainwashing ploy. Sci-fi reality bitches.
I love that episode. It's so funny to see all the characters let out orgasmic gasps as they "succeed" in the game.
Are digital entities that can be reproduced infinitely somehow in short supply? What exactly do you do with one when you get it?
Isn't this the basic premise of BitCoin, too? (Not trying to be sarcastic, I honestly don't grasp how the whole thing works.)
The number of bitcoins is technically limited to 21 million.
No one needs more than 21 million bitcoins.
I have trolled Robbo on the twitters(when I used it). #sorrynotsorry
I don't really care about who Twitter bans. They can do whatever they want.
In the end, it's just more publicity for Milo, and Twitter knows they pissed off more people by banning him than they ever made happy by doing so. It's just free publicity.
Personally, I'm just so over SJW's posturing as if they're so progressive and enlightened, while they create a worldview based on the simplicity of categorizing large swaths of people into "good" bins and "evil" bins based on nothing to do with who they are as individuals, but solely on ace/religion/sex affiliation and correct groupfeels associated with membership.
The calling Trump "daddy" thing is actually pretty funny. It is Yiannopolis responding to the Prog belief that Trump is some kind of evil cult of personality with ridicule. "Oh yeah, you think it is a cult of personality, well I am going to call him daddy". And of course, the Progs being literal minded half wits never get the joke and think he is serious, which makes the joke if you get it that much funnier.
He seems to have perfected performance art for the early 21st Century. He does shit like have his supporters bring him into an event on a sedan chair. That shit drives progs insane. They are too humorless and dimwitted to get the joke and instead take it literally and think he is some evil genius brainwashing an army of evil racist followers.
Robby in a nutshell.
That's it. The left is burdened with this idea that they're the edgy revolutionaries (bc nothing says edgy revolutionary like reviving a cultic 19th-century economic philosophy created, like everything else in this world other than peanut butter, by white European men), so when confronted with uber NFG trolls like Milo, Coulter, or McInnes they come apart at the seams.
It's a beautiful thing to watch.
HA
Hey Reason staff, how about you deliver us the innovations of.. uh.. slashdot in... like 2000... and give us a commenting system where we can upvote? Because I'd upvote Knarf the Yenrab here instead of leaving this worthless comment.
:plus1:
(Confused? Read Kurt Loder's review of the movie and overview of the controversy here.)
That link didn't help me.
Free speech issues aside, I have a hard time having much sympathy for someone who spends years of Twitter talking about how much she hates white people and then runs to the management when people start sending her racist tweets.
So what did *Milo* *actually* *do*?
Nothing really. He just insulted some black actor and mercilessly ridiculed her crude responses. That is it. Then some of his twitter followers called her an ape. That is pretty bad but less so when you see how many racist tweets about white people she has sent out over the years.
All I can say is that I would never associate myself with any group of people that would routinely compare a prominent WoC to a hairy, savage, forest-dwelling biped, terrestrial or otherwise.
How do you determine membership of the group in question?
That's kinda.. the... point... here.
I know, right? Apes are amazing, majestic creatures!
They were his followers. They choose to associate with him. He didn't choose to associate with them. You can block someone, but you can't keep them from following you.
Ok. Honestly, I was just pointing out that for all the people suggesting that comparing her to an ape was racist and horrible (and it is), comparing a black lady to a Wookie doesn't seem much better.
The gorilla comment came BEFORE Milo was involved.
I can't be the only one that thinks that some lorge portion of all hate tweets are SJW trolls, trying to help realize their own accusations of the alt-right.
The idea that these TROLLS are RACISTS gives ACTUAL RACISTS a bad name.
I mean say what you want about the tenants of national socialism, dude, but at least it's an ethos. Lulz are not an ethos.
What is twitter?
Sometimes this line is blurry, like when college libertarian groups bring controversial speakers to campus?Milo Yiannopoulos, for instance?with the explicit goal of violating a college's speech-chilling norms and policies.
Um, that's not a blurry line at all. That's supporting free speech on campus.
But harassment is a real problem: particularly on Twitter, where no one is safe from the trolls.
No it isn't. A "real problem" I mean. Not having clothing, food, shelter: those are real problems. Watching your child die from a treatable disease because you can't get access to the medicine he needs: that's a problem.
Getting butt-hurt because strangers said mean things to you on the Interwebs: not a problem.
I was raised on the old "sticks and stones" proverb. What the hell ever happened to that.
Strangers said mean stuff? Pull up your big-girl panties and get over it. Internet attention span is measured in hours. In a day or two your Twitter feed will be clean again and you can go on with your life.
This is why it's increasingly hard to take Reason writers seriously as libertarians.
For them, the worst thing in the world is being a racist - thinking some other race is despicable and inferior. Openly expressing your Thought Crime of not liking some people is the worst thing in the world.
Whatever happened to violating the rights of others being the worst thing in the world? Whatever happened to advocating and supporting the violation of the rights of others being the worst thing in the world?
The entire Left advocates and supports statist rights violations on a massive scale, which they wish to expand and expand and expand til doomsday. Where is all the outrage for that? For actual rights violations? For advocating and supporting actual rights violations, and demanding more and more and more?
Where's all the contempt and condemnation for those who advocate actual rights violations?
Which is it, O Reasonoids?
Statists advocate the wholesale violation of rights - wholesale crime. Racists hate some people, and some of those people feel bad that they are hated.
Which is the greater evil, warranting more condemnation? Actual Crime, or Thought Crime?
Yeah,I did kinda a double take, like yeah of course what you're saying doesn't affect your right to say it [except real threats, of course] wait... What? Also, the whole subgenre of "news" stories about what people did on twitter is... Problematic.
I agree. I'd like to add two words to the mix; Bernie Sanders. Bernie wanted to drastically increase the servitude of free people to the state, with the gun to the back of the head of every worker and investor in America (and beyond if he could). He wanted take what is arguably already mass slavery and increase it. He wanted to steal fortunes from peaceful people who have not hurt anyone or broken any laws. And Reason generally treated him as a perfectly reasonable, nice old guy who was just being a little na?ve and idealistic. But oh, Ron Paul may have brushed with racists 30 years ago, stop the presses, sound the alarm, lock the doors and bar the windows! And now a lot of libertarians have decided that if you don't like completely unrestricted mass immigration, you aren't a libertarian. You can support high taxes or labor laws or global warming-inspired environmental laws and be a libertarian, you know, there's room for other views, but wanting to secure the border is, as I think Gillespie once wrote, an idea he hopes is completely banished from police discourse, such a heinous crime it is. They wonder why Trump is doing so well when they actively help his campaign like this.
Twitter should be able to ban anyone, but the left is oh so big on fair treatment. So if Milo didn't violate TOS or Twitter doesn't ban leftists who commit similar offenses, he should sue. Twitter is where death threats and rape wishes on Sarah Palin occurs nightly.
No one should be subjected to abuse, but this is a bit of self inflicted wound. The elites just could not handle the fact that the general public (not "trolls") was unhappy with a gender overhaul of a classic film. Most people recognized that Hollywood started a SJW project on a proven franchise, banking on the brand recognition to make a success out of a female led film.
It's a perfectly legitimate response. Fanboys hated on George Lucas for 20 years for updating the original trilogy. Left alone, these things just linger on as talking points online. But no, the reviewers and the media couldn't let things go and beat their usual drums about sexism and bigotry. That obviously excited the real trolls who saw their agenda catching notoriety.
If a society is obsessed about identity politics to the exclusion of all else, it will face certain backlash. Satire and mockery exists to ridicule the rigid status quo. If the ruling class calls everyone a racist at every turn, artists and citizens alike will laugh at it.
Late but relevant.
Appreciated, thank you.
I realize I'm way late on this, but hasn't this chick said a bunch of shitty racist things herself? Is this that thing where black people can expound stereotypes for themselves and others but white people can't? I've never really bought into that, myself. Also, again, we're talking about
...squirrels eating the part where I said essentially that if you consider nasty tweets a real problem you need to readjust your concept of a problem.
SJW's are the worst kind of crybullies. They can dish it out, but crumble at the first sign of resistance, and then go running to the mods.
Does Yiannopoulos ever find the time and motivation to denounce the bastards who follow in his footsteps? He knows perfectly well the sort of people he bestirs. He supports Trump, who encourages the vulgar right. And let's not forget that there are libertarians who have played footsie with racists and anti-Semites, including the Pauls and at least some of the Trump Libertarians that Walter Block is shepherding. I've tried for years to get libertarians to denounce racism, but few will do so. They claim that racism is no vice if it is unaccompanied by violence. There are probably as many alt-rightists who label themselves libertarian as conservative, and the libertarian movement has not begun to clean house. If it doesn't do so, racism will be the undoing of the movement.
No, he doesn't, because it's pointless. Racism is a bad thing. But for some reason, even being in the same room as a racist is treated like it disqualifies you from ever speaking again, but supporting, say, socialism, the murderous ideology that slaughtered upwards of 100 million people since it's inception, that's okay, that's just a "difference of opinion". You can run for President, seriously, while advocating for the State to once again seize absolute power and destroy lives by the thousands, but to be given support by some old, irrelevant racist is just horrid. This the PC fascism Milo hates, and no, he's never going to bother denouncing the tiny minority of childish idiots who run around name-calling when other idiots are actively ruining lives and damaging western society. Libertarians almost always denounce racism, I don't know what circles you hang in, but they don't obsess over it, there are more important things to fight over than the previous generation's hangups that will end when they die any way.
I really have to disagree with the two articles you penned on this together, enough to go dig up my login info to post. PC thought really is strangling us, and this is seen in how even the alleged opponents are controlled by it. This woman was not bullied. You CAN'T be bullied over the internet, because you can just turn it off. This is why skinheads never seem to die off. This is why race relations are deteriorating like it's the 60's again. This is why Trump has a shot of being the president. This is, as the late, great Christopher Hitchens said, is fascism of thought. I think Reason magazine should buy every writer a copy of John Stuart Mills' 'On Liberty' to relearn the advantage not just of legal freedom, but the advantage of socially allowing everyone to speak and debate their differences. Like freedom in general, there will always be bad apples who take advantage of it, but it's worth that price. The internet is amazing because anyone can talk on it and is free of reprisals (well, I guess a hacker could hurt you, but that's exceedingly rare), more than any medium yet invented. Calling for social restrictions and limitations just emboldens calls for legal ones, and soon the internet will be a curated, dogmatic echo chamber and those who are ignored might go further than just voting for Trump.
I don't know anything about the movie or the actress, but based on her Twitter tantrum, Leslie Jones seems to be an entitled, privileged, and ungracious person.
Did i find myself on Huffpo or some shit?
I mean we all know Robby is a closet SJW Bern Victim, but at least up until this point we could play the game. Now he isn't even trying to pretend anymore.
huffpoo *is* shit, AND world-class hypocrites on numerous levels...
they are FIRST in line to garble on breathlessly about the looks, grooming, style of celebutards, etc; BUT the bizarre proposition is, you are NOT allowed to then comment on said looks, grooming or style of ANYONE but the 'outgroup'...
(well, you can comment, but it BETTER be ONLY 'positive' comments, bub ! !! once again, the opposite of freedom...)
stupid shits think changing the world comes from wristbands and cruelty-free coffee...
why I call myself a former libtard, is I can't abide the destruction of the bedrock principle of freedom -free speech- being debased and destroyed by people who supposedly know better...
if you don't know that free speech is paramount to a free society, then you don't know shit from shinola...
I don't know what Milo is talking about...I thought that nigger did a fine job in the movie
"For any black person to be subjected to racist abuse is horrific"
But it is acceptable for whites to receive this "horrific" treatment? The left is famous for pointing out "code words", but they are the main purveyor of hate speech! Racist, bigots are words commonly thrown at white conservatives, are these words not as bad as the word nigger? A strong argument can easily be made labeling someone a racist could have detrimental effects on a person's lively hood! Being called a nigger, while hurtful and uncalled for, will only leave a dent in your feelings..
Point is we allow the left and SJW to control our speech while allowing them unfettered access to the whole dictionary, and this is why we are losing...
So true:
In an email sent from Twitter to Milo, the site said it had "permanently suspended" his account due to "repeated violation of Twitter rules, specifically our rules prohibiting participating in or inciting targeted abuse of individuals."
Jones, meanwhile, has repeatedly made derogatory comments about white people:
Lord have mercy?white people shit
? Leslie Jones (@Lesdoggg) February 9, 2015
She also retweeted a comparison of Milo as the "Uncle Tom of Gay people," before claiming that her account was hacked and that she was not responsible for the retweet.
wait a minute is solomon sitting by a white women?#imgonnafuckhimup
? Leslie Jones (@Lesdoggg) March 3, 2014

? Leslie Jones (@Lesdoggg) August 27, 2014
Yo them dudes with the curls on the side of they head does that make them more Jewish? For real I need to know. #LAXBLUES
? Leslie Jones (@Lesdoggg) February 10, 2015
Others tweets include her her telling a black woman she was "sick" of black people who didn't favour her casting in the Ghostbusters reboot, after the woman suggested a different actress would have been better suited to the role, poking fun at Jewish people, and claiming black Republican's are an "oxymoron."
Jones also violated Twitter's policy against targeted harassment, directly ordering her followers to mob another user. This is the same policy that Twitter says Milo violated, despite the fact that the Breitbart editor never told his followers to attack Jones.
@whitebecky1776 bitch I want to tell you about your self but I'm gonna let everybody else do it I'm gonna retweet your hate!! Get her!!
? Leslie Jones (@Lesdoggg) July 19, 2016
Jones confirmed she was "leaving" Twitter on Monday evening but has not deleted her account.
@Lesdoggg Hi Leslie, following, please DM me when you have a moment
? Jack (@jack) July 19, 2016
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey then tweeted at Jones asking her to send him a private message. Milo has since been removed.
Saying "white people" is not automatically derogatory. You poor soul.
I think the worst thing here is that this can all be tracked.
The initial shitstorm started after Jones told her followers to 'get' someone who was critical of the movie on Monday
Somewhere in there someone suggested she could play Harambe
Later, after she'd started complaining about all the abuse she was getting, Milo told her to toughen up, that threats and abuse were common and that she should stop playing the victim.
She responded with the comment that Milo called illiterate
It's all right there to see.
Her name didn't ring a bell, but I realize I've seen Jones' act on Last Comic Standing. She's not funny. That is all.
The idea that academia (and science, and entertainment) are controlled by a nefarious conspiracy of leftists engaged in a perhaps centuries-long plot to control the world--a conspiracy theory endorsed in this article--is a core tenet of neonaziism. All that's missing from the mainstream retelling of this narrative are "the Jews," though presumably they're implied.
This article dips its toe into that nonsense even as it, surprisingly, makes the brave case that mass racist harassment is bad.
As a private company Twitter is not required to follow the First Amendment.
That leaves them with the task of maintaining some level of control for what is posted on their site.
If they do nothing they risk becoming a cesspool of offensive rhetoric.
Or they could go too far in maintaining an overly PC and become the place nobody goes.
The best choice is to let it happen and act only when the posters get outside of some previously stated boundaries.
Those boundaries Must be as wide as possible.
The hard part is to keep it neutral.
That means well trained moderators and a way for users to flag comments.
That doesn't mean that disagreeable or even offensive comments get deleted.
It simply gives the moderators a way to focus their efforts on likely problems.
Most sites have some bias, left or right.
Allowing the bias to drive the filters is a sure way to loose audience, and revenue.
Doing it right requires more resources.
If the accounting department is running the show you have already lost; pack it up and go home.
Twitter is already a cesspool of offensive rhetoric, it's just that they prefer their poop to come from rich, privileged, and influential media personalities, politicians, and celebrities. Well, and unfunny comedians.
The things that were said to and about her were horrendous, and unnerved me, and I sent her a tweet of support, but also as a member of a minority group (gays) I am also accustomed to hearing shockingly hateful things. Such is life. The people that say the nasty things aren't worth a person's time or energy and they definitely win when you let their ignorance bother you.
I firmly believe, though, that if they can't say those idiotic things, that the gates are let loose and suddenly everything is fair play and all of a sudden free speech will cease to exist.
Also, it is a bit hypocritical for making broad statements accusing large sections of the populace as Jones has in regards to designers not rushing to dress her as racist and size-biased and a couple of other things I have seen from her. So, if you use the platform to criticize others, you have to expect some blow-back. Karma is an evil mistress.
Have you looked at her comedy? Have you seen her tweets? How is it any way surprising that her crude language, her use of her size and weight in her comedy, and her racist tweets don't invite a response? Do you seriously think that she isn't deliberately trolling the Internet in order to get just the responses she is getting?
I'm a gay immigrant. I have never received homophobic or xenophobic responses or threats on my social media accounts. Nor have any of my friends. When people receive such threats, the cause is obviously not their minority status, it's their behavior.
I disagree with your opening premise. You can't restrict the free speech rights of Nazis without first judging their content as inappropriate, which vitiates free speech. Free speech can only be judged at the margins. If you can't say horrible things, there is no free speech.
We can even create playlists of them so it will be very easy to find our videos which we like. We can also download those videos and can watch them offline. Showbox for pc
