It's Official: Donald Trump Is the Republican Nominee for President
Prepare for the classiest, most amazing election you've ever seen.

There would be no last-minute surprises, not that some delegates didn't try. At a little after 8 p.m., House Speaker Paul Ryan declared that Donald J. Trump had enough delegate votes to claim the formal nomination as the Republican Party's candidate for president.
The votes went: 1,725 for Trump, 475 for Sen. Ted Cruz, 120 for Gov. John Kasich, 114 for Sen. Marco Rubio, seven for Ben Carson, three for Jeb Bush, and two for Rand Paul.
There was a delay and some controversy because some delegates from Alaska and Washington, D.C., had their votes counted for Trump despite being bound to other candidates during the primaries. It turned out, though, that the primary rules for those two declared that if there were only one candidate for president in play at the convention, all those votes would go to that candidate rather than whomever they were originally bound to. The rule was explained to the delegates, who were upset to have their votes changed, before Ryan declared Trump the nominee.
Of course, there's a lot more to come. Reason writers are in the joint reporting on their experiences there, so stay tuned for much, much more. We've got all our convention coverage organized here.

In before the celebrating
There will be no celebration. In before comiseration.
Donald Smash!
But no fears, the Clintons will put the class back into this election, the way they always put the class back into things.
This will be as exciting as Alien v. Predator, only more bloody.
That movie was better than I expected.
But not as good as Prometheus.
That's the one with guy covered in flour?
No! That was the Lookin' for the Wet Spot series, and....
Oh, you said "guy". Sorry.
POWDER!
UNCONTROLLABLE VOMITTING
Are you the one who raved about the bland, safe, unimaginative Force Awakens?
No I raved about The Force Awakens made by JJ Abrams that had great characters, better dialogue, and good action.
A New Hope: Precocious future Jedi meets Han Solo, then escapes desert planet on Millennium Falcon.
Force Awakens: Precocious future Jedi escapes desert planet on Millennium Falcon, then meets Han Solo.
JJ ABRAMS IS A FUCKING GENIUS!
Well, at least Force Awakens had a truly innovative climax. Wait, no it didn't, it just amounted to blowing up a Death Star again.
I loved Star Wars as a kid, wanted to love TFA, but after seeing it I wouldn't even buy the Blu Ray when it drops to $10.
What, the omnicompetent ingenue and all the midichlorians attracted by her grrrrl power didn't make you forgive the plot's shortcomings?
I'm very sorry that you have poor taste in movies.
Hey, Darlin'. Hold my cigar and watch this.
I'm not touching that thing. No telling where it's been
By staining their dresses?
"...the Clintons will put the class back into this election, the way they always put the class back into things."
Yeeeeaaahhh. I seem to remember them stealing the curtains, cutlery, and dishes etc. from the whitehouse when they left. They also trashed all of the communiques, computers etc before the Bush admin settled in. I had a rent house once and was stupid enough to rent to some gypsies. When the cops came looking for them I discovered that they had left in the middle of the night and taken light fixtures, wall switches, wall plugs, breakers, faucets, etc with them.
Also, the destroyed files and equipment makes me think shades of the current Clinton email scandal. How much of that shit flew under the radar back then?
I will say it again: Clinton is the worst person to ever run for president. A mediocre grifter and thief. Now I can add traitor to that list.
That's why I have a hard time getting worked up over Trump. America survived 8 years of a walking Jeff Foxworthy routine, it can survive this.
RIP GOP
Fuck that. No peace.
Truth be told, the GOP was already dead. It died a little every time Mitch McConnell or John Boehner walked up to a microphone.
Trump is just fucking the corpse.
I'm still holding on to my prediction for a Clinton presidency. But I admit I'm not holding it as tightly as I was six months ago.
There is no reason to hold onto it any less tightly and much reason to hold tightly. She's basically a lock.
Lords

Konspiracies.
You definitely aren't as tight as you were 6 months ago.
Careful, Playa. You are treading into OMWC territory.
Where is he these days?
In clown school.
Prison?
I think handle change
He's a renegade.
Paul is OMWC. Old Man Without Candy.
Scott, are you helping Nick with his wifi connection?
Can we write something nice about Trump now? And not about his hair. Something substantial. Like, he has pretty good hair. No, wait... damn it. This is tough.
By far the most terrifying thing about Trump is that hair. I mean, think about it. If your hair starts going to shit, and a Billionaire can't do anything about shit hair, you're pretty much fucked.
I thought it was the verbal judo kinetic actions that establish synergistic conflicts in your reptilian psyche.
Or whatever the hell Scott Adams talks about
I consider buying a hot slovenian model doing something pretty effective about shit hair.
That might have fixed 'something', but it sure as hell didn't fix that hair.
OT: Apparently Germany is now concerned that pro/con Erdogan Turks are going to go at it in their backyard.
http://www.express.co.uk/news/.....ip-Erdogan
There's only one solution. Der fuehrer oma Merkel has to open the border and let all the Turkish refugees flood in. Nothing could possibly go wrong.
What's going to happen when Turkeys application to the EU gets canned?
If it were ever going to get "canned", it would have been canned long ago. It seems to me that the preferred status quo is perpetual 'consideration' in order to attempt to leverage some internal reforms. Dropping the process would be like the US unilaterally dropping sanctions against Iran - doing so would admit that they had no influence in the first place.
I think this is right. Also, you will always be Gilmore to me.
I think it pretty much WAS canned long ago.
In the sense of "put on ice indefinitely", maybe.
However, in the time since, both France and others have 'unfrozen' their relations, and have moved forward on a range of items, including visa-free travel, and process towards normalization of a variety of laws.
IOW, the situation is more or less what i described ; ensuring the process is perpetual, drawn out, involving baby-steps so that the EU can see a constant development of "compliance". Nothing significant will likely happen under the current regime - but it doesn't mean the process it dead.
The EU is definitely is a state of flux after Brexit. Seems totally unpredictable what's going to happen. But guessing, from all the recent Islamic terror going on, I think Europe is going to swing way to the right and the EU will either change in some significant way, shrink in size, or break up entirely. I don't think there's any way it stays the same.
Or she could just ask us to intervene.
Arent there a few million turks in Germany?
(checks) meh. 1.5 or so Nothing to sneeze at, at least.
Smashing glass, accusing people of being traitors of the Fatherland.... i mean, that's not the Germany *I* know.
Looks like Erdogan is setting himself up as a dictator.
I confess that i'm not super-hip to Turkish politics. My only interest has been their relationship in the clusterfuck/quagmire of the Iraq/Syria/Iran conflict in the region, and their on-again-off-again war with the Kurds.
My impression is that the way Erdogan is going about things.... he's actually going to end up with a genuine revolution instead of a mere-coup.
In a situation where there's a genuine 'slim majority' between the Islamists and the more moderate turkish parties... you'd think a failed small-time coup-attempt would result in the isolation and ostracizing of a small element... which could (in theory) provide an opportunity for the ruling party to gain more support from and consolidate its position. he could 'reconcile' with opposition, and show that he truly has majority support to rule.
instead he seems to be attempting to kill everyone - not just the coup planners, but any/all opposition. which can't work as any permanent solution; he doesn't have that kind of mandate.
He seems like a fucking moron to me. I dont know why the US would be so keen to see him still running the show.
Because elections, bra.
Do you even democracy?
The scary thing is that Erdogan is kinda crazy. He really thinks he's going to resurrect the Ottoman empire. I saw a picture of him with bodyguards wearing plastic looking Ottoman-era armoured guard costumes. Ridiculous
If only he, Putin, and Trump could make an alliance and take over the world. Recovering lost empires FTW.
Obama is keen on him. Doubt most Americans are. I think the guy is a dictator wannabe.
"He seems like a fucking moron to me. I dont know why the US would be so keen to see him still running the show."
1) John Kerry
2) Known devil
My guesses
i suppose he provides use of airbases in turkey for dones, resupplying our DL campaign in syria, etc.
All I know is my Greek friends always told me never let the Turks into the EU.
"We may be Europe's Puerto Rico, but at least we aren't those guys." I have a Turkish colleague that just got slapped by Murphy's Law: his US-bound non-stop flight back from a family visit was scheduled to leave a day after the coup attempt; US-bound flights are discontinued because G?len. His family of 4 with infant in tow is just going to need to fly to an EU country first. Maybe Greece!
The EU cares a lot more, or used to anyway, about the potential cheap labor and manufacturing Turkey could provide. They never have given a shit about Greece, as should be obvious from how they handled the immigrant and Greek financial fiascos. This may have changed now with the failed coup and Brexit - not their giving a shit about Greece, not inviting Turkey into the EU.
A 400-year occupation by them might have something to do with that.
Oh Christ, Turkish nationalists. Probably the worst kind of nationalist I've ever had the privilege of speaking to.
"Did you know Attila the Hun was a proud and noble Turk who leveled the greatest empire Europe ever knew? KEBAB STRONK!"
Attila was a Magyar, not a Turk.
Tell that to the bloody Turkish nationalists.
These are the same people who believe this nonsense.
"The Turkish president - whose AK Party is rooted in political Islam - gave no further evidence to back up his theory, instead stating: "Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th Century."
And so it was. Douche bag declares history.
Hildebeast had better gather up her best most evil energy and do something.
Today RCP avg - Hillary + 2.7
Hilldawg had a big boost after the official proclamation that she had won the Dem nomination, which put her up around 12 pts in the RCP avg. She's nearly lost all of that already, just like she lost the +30 pt lead she had over Trump before that.
She's a lame dog. Not sure how anyone can be so confident about her. And now the debates, this should be really cringe worthy. Most likely outcome seems to be that Trump baits her into a mud pit and does with her what he did with all the GOP candidates.
This is the most interesting and fucked up election cycle
I don't like "interesting government". Government should be extremely boring.
And mostly insignificant except for in the case of national defense.
How about "invisible", kinda like the janitor cleaning up the spill on aisle #6.
Why are you so anti-women...or whatever it is that Hillary is?
" does with her what he did with all the GOP candidates."
Primaries =/= generals
Also, she's still on track to destroy him: http://www.redstate.com/jaycar.....t-hillary/
My guess of what the electoral map will look like.
It's true that Trump is pulling in a lot of blue collar voters from the Democrats and that will help him in the rust belt. But he'll lose Virginia and maybe even North Carolina if the black vote is high enough and will likely lose Florida, Nevada, and Colorado because of the Hispanic vote.
Hillary becomes president with the shortest coattails in history and GOP retains the Senate by a tiny margin.
It's going to be very close, I think. I think that Trump has to win OH, PA, and FL. If he does, he'll win, if not Hillary will win.
Yeah, it's going to come down to Ohio and Florida again.
It's too close to call right now:
Pennsylvania 45.5 42.3 Clinton +3.2
Florida 44.0 43.4 Clinton +0.6
Ohio 43.4 41.6 Clinton +1.8
For the ultimate in schadenfreude let's say Hillary wins the popular vote and we get another Bush v. Gore over FL to decide the election.
Only RBG has to recuse herself because she shot her mouth off earlier and Trump wins.
"The system works!"
She wouldn't recuse. Recusal is to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest or corruption.
Since the corruption is open and blatant now, they don't bother.
If it's to close to call then it's too close to call.
Give it a rest everyone.
Polls show what polls are paid to show.
Your candidate has been accused of murder by the other party.
Do you think your candidate is qualified to be President ?
Trump has to win more than that. Right now, he can't even secure Arizona or Utah.
Perhaps he can have a wall built and make Arizona and Utah pay for it.
Trump is getting white voters in all the wrong places to make a difference. 308.com had an article about.
I really doubt it will be as close as you say it's going to be. I am pretty sure not only are we looking at a blwout, but the GOP will lose the senate and possibly the House.
I don't see it. The Dems have a built in advantage in the electoral college, but I think the Republicans keep the house, and call it 55% likely they keep the Senate.
I don't see them losing the House. Republicans have a massive advantage in organization at the district level.
The Senate is another story but I've read some curious articles about how little the national election is impacting the NV senate race. Low turnout in general will severely hurt the Democrats' chances to win the Senate.
Yup.
He won't lose Colorado because of the Hispanic vote. He'll lose it because the Democrats here are mostly transplanted Californians and the Republicans are socons.
Trump is really the only one that could beat her. Bernie could have been beaten by anyone but Trump, but Hillary requires someone who can drag all her dirty laundry out on the lawn and dance around it. Trump's got no shame and Hill's supporters can't make him back down and apologize for pointing out the obvious.
"Trump is really the only one that could beat her. "
Said no one who has looked at the polling numbers.
Dirty laundry, you say?
Jeeze how long have you been holding onto that photo.
Not long enough.
Something's coming out of her wherever.
Dude. *Hurls* I mean, dude, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
Although I am not glad that you clicked on PM's link, DenverJ, I think I should thank you for the warning nonetheless.
You need to see this.
ONE HAIR TO RULE THEM ALL ONE HAIR TO FIND THEM
ONE HAIR TO RULE THEM ALL AND IN THE DARKNESS BIND THEM
So is Christie a Nazgul now?
Nazgullet
But remember, libertarians have a natural home in the Republican party!
Had. It was ours to commandeer but now there's no point. Trump is going to render them radioactive and politically unviable. Even if we did take over it wouldn't matter; we're never seeing another GOP president again.
Woo woo ho,
Woo woo ho,
Radioactive!
Radioactive!
Meh. Political parties=\= political philosophies. Remember, the elephants started as the party claiming federal supremacy, while the Dems were conservative, warmongering, States' Righters.
So the Dems become socialist, and the Republicans become working class populists. The party machine is still in place, and it exists not to enact a philosophy, but, rather, the party machine exists to gain the power for the party.
Neither does Jeb Bush, apparently. Not sure it says anything.
It says that Stormy has a real issue with association of and relationship of facts. In case you weren't already aware of that.
Republicans actually have sort of made a home in the Republican party, despite the hostility they are facing from the establishment.
Really, you consider not being elected president a good sign of not being welcome in a party? The few libertarians in the GOP would absolutely not be allowed in the Democratic party, period.
First sentence - Libertarians, not Republicans.
The debates might actually be worth watching this time around.
Ummm...no.
*** rising intonation ***
Not even for a *bloody* coughing fit?
Ohh, I can hardly wait! It is going to be soooo amazing, my skin is having goosebumps! I just peed on my knickers! Whoo!
So will Bill hit on Ivanka at some point? I mean Donald already did.
If the Donald beats up Willy on the teevee, I will so pay to see that.
"You better watch it, hillbilly! I know Trump-Fu! I mean, I invented the system in my spare time, 'cause I'm a winner. It's gonna be YUUUUGE, you piss ant!"
THE REPUBLIC IS DEAD
1776-2016
The reign of Emperor Trump doesn't begin until 2017.
The reign of Emperor Trump doesn't begin.
-FTFY
I still think Hillary will find a way to lose the election.
You really cannot put it past her.
Other than having a violent coughing fit during a debate, I don't see it.
I think she will actually come unglued on national TV when Trump says nasty things and calls her a liar to her face. He is going to say all the things that the media and all her Dem opponents have not dared to say.
As much as I'd love to see that, it's exactly what she'll be expecting and she will have a very carefully rehearsed response about how it demonstrates that he doesn't have the right temperament for the job.
Yep. Sure, we can all see Clinton melting down, but she and her team know that Trump will go wild with crazy shit. They'll load her up with xanax if need be.
Really, all she needs to do is shut up for 90 minutes and talk in the few spaces when Trump isn't speaking.
Has Hillary EVER melted down in public? Seriously, EVER?
What makes you think after 40 years in the public spotlight she's going to suddenly depart from form and through a shrieking fit on national television?
Fuck, if she did that, her positives would probably go up. No, she will remain herself, smile sweetly and and deliver what she thinks is a devastatingly subtle and clever insult, which isn't either, and then wink knowingly at the audience like they're all in on the joke. And the audience, which will of course be stocked with Democrats (because this is the mainstream media after all), will laugh and laugh and laugh, like it's the funniest thing ever.
There was the "what difference" incident, which could be magnified by Trump's needling of her, but that was during a ten hour Congressional hearing, right? She can handle 90-120 minutes, with the moderator gladly redirecting some of Trump's aggression to him/herself.
Vast Right Wing Conspiracy?
We are the president?
What difference, at this point?
She's come unglued without ever having had any real pressure put on her.
If Trump can stay on target, he can make her implode. Big if, though.
He's counting on it. And he'll destroy her if she does. She will have to completely keep her composure at all times, and she won't be able to do it. She has been coddled and protected by the media her entire life and now that is over. The media cannot control Trump. Hillary is walking on a mine field here.
"Hey, Madame Secretary! Smile if you got any last night!"
"She couldn't even get back on the stage for last night's debate. What, did she go home and take a nap? She's got no energy, she's got nothing!'.
Yeah, it's going to go great for Hillary, in someone's deluded imagination. She's like an old rag that has been washed so many times, only a few fragile threads are holding it together.
Why would she come unglued at the prospect of Trump's verbal diarrhea? You...actually think a debate is going to do her in? What world do you live in?
The FBI finds sufficient evidence of corruption with the Foundation to chaHAHAHAHAHAHAA!! Damn, couldn't quite get it out!
I'm not predicting. I'd bet she'll win, but no more than $5.
We could start another 20$ donation to reason bet drive. I'm already on the hook whether or not Obama reclassifies MJ on the way out.
I'll start. It's a 20 to Reason either way, but I'ma predict Trump.
Come on Cytoxic, you in? If you all prefer, we can just pay if we are wrong.
O/T:
Get a load of this guy, here...
Really?? :pffft: "Fourth Amendment". How quaint.
Man these fucking pigs are pissing me off.
"Dammit, you darkies! Why won't you just submit, already?? We're trying to "help" you!"
I really hate the media and our so called leaders. All of them all about the poor 'heroes' who have died, but no one gives a fucking shit about the people who the 'heroes' murdered in cold blood. No fucking respect from me for these assholes.
Waterbury is the home of a terrible interstate bottleneck. A three lane interstate turns into a two lane interstate through that hellhole, before it opens back up to three lanes again. Forty minutes to drive three miles, people.
The more you know.
So, they like to "squeeze" you in Waterbury, eh?
Warrantless squeezing, yes sir.
In this day and age, is there any other kind?
There is a section of 225 in South Denver, right before it merges with 25, where 5 lanes reduce to 2 for about three miles.
Fuck that section. What the hell were they thinking when they were building T-REX and not adding lanes there?
I smell something troll like. Anyone else smell that stench?
That's Scott's aftershave.
I assume that continually writing excellent alt text won Scott the honor of not having to attend the Cleveland convention. Well done, sir.
Indeed, CJ,
I, for one, intended to compliment him upon his Alt-Text for this particular article (as I have complimented him similarly before).
Would you agree that Scott seems reasonably well respected by many of the commenters on H&R, CJ?
I don not know how much indifference he has in this regard. Any thoughts?
Scott is great, but if you go back and read some of his gay marriage articles (I highly suggest not doing this), you will find some commenters (one in particular) vehemently disagree with him.
Also, Team Trump probably doesn't care for him either, but that is mostly because they are horrible.
Thanks.
Fucking Retropublicans and their grave-robbing milieu.
OT: HM, picked this up at my closest Asian market and slow grilled this evening (I put it into a fried rice with Thai basil, fresh tomato chunks, and fish sauce/chili/garlic/scrambled eg after chopping the meat coarsely). The taste is good as a standalone eat, and while having ample heat, doesn't overwhelm or dominate [my] palate. This is the first such Southeast Asian food product of its kind that I've enjoyed (for whatever I do not find lap cheong all that appealing.) Highly recommend, surprised to learn that they produce out of Providence.
The Thai writing on the package reads "sai oua moo lao" or Laotian-style pork sai oua sausage. I guess the dill makes it Laotian.
Do you have any recommendations as far as Thai style sausage like this available around these parts, or basically nothing? I'm going to check that Viet market when I am in Nashua tomorrow.
Prepare for the classiest, most amazing election you've ever see
yadda yadda yadda it's gonna be YUGE!
NBC news is saying the Trump campaign is "in crisis" over this speech thing. Of all the things in the world that could be reported on this is their lead story.
They're irrelevant in the modern world and desperately clinging to the past. If they were still relevant, Trump would have been gone long ago and Jeb would be the nominee for the GOP, and Bernie Sanders would have never won a single state.
Um...the coverage from NBC and various other TV stations were instrumental in promoting Trump.
NBC's viewer base is outraged, just outraged!
And don't forget: You can't spell "crisis" without "ISIS".
She's a lame dog. Not sure how anyone can be so confident about her. And now the debates, this should be really cringe worthy. Most likely outcome seems to be that Trump baits her into a mud pit and does with her what he did with all the GOP candidates.
While I look forward to this (as a glass-is-half-ful kinda person), I expect Hitlery to go full vagina, and the majority of the news media to support her. Also, "zingers" in 'debates' will only get one so far.
Also, anyone who thinks Trump is going to be anything but a hot toxic mess at the debate is psychotic.
There's a big contingent of morons and malcontents who happen to like the "hot toxic mess" look. Trump is the bathroom stall graffiti of politics.
A hot toxic mess vs a zinger-slinging full-vagina!
I expect that too, and I expect it to not work in epic fashion.
If you think Trump has gotten this far on zingers, you haven't been paying attention. Trump commands the stage because he's a salesman, demagogue, and bully who's fast on his feet and absolutely confident.
Hillary can't take a breath without focus-testing it first. The election comes down to Trump and his angry populists vs. the combined weight of the media and Hollywood who have to serve as a collective proxy candidate for Hillary. HRC can still win, but she's going to have to thread the needle by limiting her media exposure without being overshadowed by an opponent who is an attention sponge.
It is really laughable to me that anyone believes that this guy who made short work of 17 GOP candidates is going to be easily handled by an old woman with no energy, no personality, no likeability, etc, etc. It's totally delusional. Hillary might still win the election, but the media are not going to be able to save her and if she wins it will be by the slimmest of margins. As you said, no one has been paying any attention if they believe Hillary can easily handle Trump.
I don't think that certain people realize that half of Trump's allure is good old spite. Large portions of this country feel worked over by the political class, and Trump is giving them a little taste of their own medicine. The more the media and Hillary stick to their traditional tactics, the better Trump looks to the spiteful folks.
Chris Christie is laying out the case to convict Hitlery Kkklinton.
Can we convict Jersey the Hutt too? I'd be all for tying Joisey and Hilldawg to a rocket and firing it into the sun if I thought we have a rocket that could make that mass escape the earth's gravitational well.
This. It's like Darth Vader criticising Darth Maul. Or something. Pots and kettles , but that's racist.
Technically, wouldn't we be escaping the gravitational well of Hillary/Christie?
Stimulus bill to Christie": "Who're YOU calling bloated?"
This speech would work better if Christie was wearing an executioner's hood.
You're actually watching that shitshow? come on man. there's got to be something better on. Like, Jai Alai re-runs.
It's entertaining. I always try to watch the conventions. I've watched most of them since 1976.
Other than Trump's acceptance speech I'm looking forward to vagina-traitor Eileen Collins tomorrow and Peter Thiel on Thursday.
* makes note: I'm middle aged, SIV is old*
Christie sez Hitlery let Tupac's Aunt remain free in Cuba.
Christie is reaching the climax: BUUURRRRNNNNN HERRRR!!
I like that Christie keeps tying Clinton to "the Castro brothers" (Raoul ). Julian & Joaqu?n have to be hating this.
(Raoul and Fidel) the ampersand ate "Fidel"
Tiffany Trump drew a bad speech writer too.

Put it on the blog.
It reminds me of this. which also gave me nightmares.

BTW, Trump Winery has provided 10,000 bottles of wine out on the concourse if you guys wanna get shit-faced and beat the crap out of the couple dozen blue-haired SJWs milling around behind the razor-wire out front.
I've driven right past the Trump Winery in VA
Well, nobody would expect you to stop and drink the shit.
I went there about 5 years ago, when he had just bought it and it was still owned by the Kluge family. Good wine! or at least it was. I can only imagine how all the proggies in C-ville are reacting to it now that Trump owns it.
Well, if you want to be all, like, fair and such. I've never drank it.
Be warned, people: don't judge a vineyard by its Trump.
if you guys wanna get shit-faced and beat the crap out of the couple dozen blue-haired SJWs
I've bought and consumed Trump wine. It is ok tasting. But I'd love to take out some sjws. The thing is, I only fire if fired upon.
Trump has a wine?
I imagine he drinks it with ice.
He doesn't drink it at all. Booze is for all us libertines, not teetotalling mofos like Trump who don't even touch coffee.
The last two Republican candidates for president shun alcohol and caffeine? America?
Therein lies the problem. Romney was a Mormon (no booze, coffee, or nicotine), not sure about McCain's drinking habits, but I know he is a rabid ex-smoker who fully supported FDA tobacco regulation, Bush II is a reformed alcoholic. The GOP candidates have for the most part been uptight tools who don't enjoy their substances.
Probably crap like white merlot.
Wife is a fan of the Irish golfer/pundit who gave Trump an entire hour last night.
Sorry, had no interest in watching the entirety, but caught some. Trump actually sounded thoughtful at times, and didn't take offense at the host's (calculated, I'm sure) insults. Less obnoxious than usual.
I did catch the host calling Shrillary 'crooked'.
Well, there's no point getting mad at an Irishman, they just can't help themselves.
Trump it is!
Which Roman emperor does he resemble most?
Well, I don't think he can play the fiddle.
He's certainly been playing the bass with skill.
These euphemisms. Outta control!
I've personally always seen him as less of an Emperor, and more of a Claudius Pulcher. Pulcher caused a bit of a 'Pulcher Derangement Syndrome' in his contemporaries as well.
One problem: "one of the most innovative urban politicians in Western history"
I haven't read the source material that's referencing, but based on my knowledge of Pulcher it can be summed up as 'he was really good at getting the plebs pissed off (whether for legitimate reasons or not), causing riots and exploiting weird gaps in Roman law.'
"Which Roman emperor does he resemble most?"
Caligula.
Trump has the same kind of taste for extravagance--like Caligula building a palace for his horse. I don't know if Trump will threaten to have the Senate confirm his his horse for some office or other, but I'd expect Trump might nominate some woman after he's taken her for a ride around the Oval Office.
Also, if Trump wins, I fully expect he'll throw orgies in the White House to rival those of Caligula. The Secret Service has gotta be rooting for Trump. Do you know how busy they're gonna be shuffling women in and out the back door of the White House if he wins? The man owns his own modeling agency! That's how he met Melanoma.
Marc Antony.
Oops... I mean Hitler
Richard Burton was never emperor.
This one?
ROAMIN' EMPEROR STEVE SMITH!
"The primary rules for those two declared that if there were only one candidate for president in play at the convention, all those votes would go to that candidate rather than whomever they were originally bound to. The rule was explained to the delegates, who were upset to have their votes changed."

"Every right is subject to regulation"
No they aren't.
Rights are inalienable; you can't even agree to give them away.
"Every right is subject to regulation."
Bet he thinks abortion is a right. Cool. So he's fine with states regulating abortion.
Oopsy! He didn't think about that part.
And a photo ID to vote, right?
If humans are imperfect, it stands to reason that both regulators and legislators are imperfect as well. Therefore, any regulation is inherently flawed and bound to fail in its goal. I don't think they thought that argument out.
I have heard people say with complete sincerity that we need govt because people are stupid and untrustworthy and thus must be controlled.
And who do these goobers think will be manning the govt? Angels? Benevolent aliens? Robots?
"And who do these goobers think will be manning the govt? Angels? Benevolent aliens? Robots?"
Ideally they want middle-low IQ civil servants who will follow orders and not be capable of too much critical thinking. Robots come pretty close to this and may soon be a reality.
He must be OK with publicly-manufactured guns not needing regulation then.

A hate crime. I guess they were worried he'd carry a guillotine to Southern Station and behead the chief?

Well, ya know the folks peddling the Watchtower ring my doorbell!
Oh, and story:
When I was but a yute, living in an apartment building, someone rang my doorbell (not sure how they got in the building). I answered it, since it should have been someone properly in the building, and was, for the first time, confronted with someone offering me a copy of The Watchtower, and asking if I understood the dangers of a Ouija board?
I guessed you could slip on it if you left it on the floor after smoking some dope, but I didn't get a watch, so it must have been the wrong answer.
(OK, I made up the last paragraph; in fact, I closed the door)
Was this before or after you decided to kill Charlie subsequent to becoming a whiny anti-government nutcase?
Getting drafted and shipped off = decided.
My dad sure loved it.
I don't see why you have your dander all up, some of those VC were Muslims. You know, the people you said you wished would be pushed into cattle cars and sent to gulags.
What I was getting at is that I wish there were more secular groups dedicated to suppressing violent Islanists. There's a couple I know of off hand such as the incredible YPG in Kurdistan or RAWA in Afghanistan. It might have been nice if the CIA and the Mossad didn't end up funding Islamist anti-communist parties in the 1980s

No, shitbag, what your were getting at was a pathetic claim of moral superiority since some of us got drafted and you didn't.
Stuff it up your ass.
Don't attempt to rewrite history. In the wake of the Nice attacks, you said you wished the Soviet Union were still around to continue their policy collectively punish Muslims by displacing them from their homes and sending them to labor camps in retaliation to terrorist attacks.
Own it.

Clinton's Colorful Cronies: Betsey Wright
-Head Bill Clinton's 1982 campaign
-Later head of Democratic Party in Arkansas
-Deputy chair of 1992 campaign
-Accused in 2005 of smuggling goods to death row inmates. Forbidden from visiting for 6 months
-Charged with 58 felonies in 2009 for attempting to smuggle a knife, tweezers, a boxcutter, and 48 tattoo needles into the death row wing of Varner Unit state prison.
-During an interview she denied any wrongdoing, saying that the needles were in a bag of chips that she got from a prison vending machine.
-Plead guilty to the above, received $2,000 fine and 1 year of probation.
Seems light for 58 felonies.
I've been listening in the car off-and-on. It's not as good as last night-- mostly presentation on the dark paranoid id of the Republican Party broken up by gimmicky nonsense about how lowering taxes will result in more jobs.
I've heard though that ben carson came through so I'm hopeful to get a chance to catch up.
Did you make your car payments?

Soap Opera actress delivered a good speech. Now up...head of Muslims for Trump!
I have no idea who soap opera actress was but agree with CNN analyst-of-color that she should have been a primetime lead in to Trump #1 son. She was really good. CNN lady said she is very popular among Black women who watch daytime TV. Might be a villain for all I know.
Kimberlin Brown. She's older than me, about Obama's age. Extremely popular soap opera villain among women who didn't have day jobs in the 1990s. She's an avocado farmer who can still get regular acting gigs if she wants to. Fox didn't carry her speech but CNN did. She gave a much better speech than Christie or Carson

CNN: motive of Allahu-Akbarin' ax attacker "unclear"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJP52kK4jG0
OK, but I gotta ask that if someone did that screaming "JESUS SAVES!", would he be doing it 'cause religion, or 'cause he's a whacko who latches onto religion as an excuse?
I think that would depend on if other people were also screaming "Jesus Saves" while committing mass-murders.
I think people need to get a grip on what "Whacko" really means.
The implication of mental illness is that the mentally ill have lost grasp on reality, and are unable to reason normally; and that they don't actually understand the real-world consequences of their acts.
Just because people are making decisions you find 'crazy' (to murder innocents at random until they themselves are killed) doesn't make their decisions the product of crazy, undirected thinking. They know what they're doing, and why.
The actual acts the so-called "crazy" people are committing are acts that are being demanded, encouraged and celebrated by their peers.
while you might not see the logic in their acts - they have a system which is coherent and which they believe is rational.
Calling religious mass-murderers crazy is an insult to actually-crazy people.
"Just because people are making decisions you find 'crazy' (to murder innocents at random until they themselves are killed) doesn't make their decisions the product of crazy, undirected thinking. They know what they're doing, and why."
Depending on the perp, this may or may not be true, and it may or may not be true that their 'coherent' system is other than crazy.
Not sure I'm "calling religious mass-murderers crazy"; I'm calling (most?) mass-murderers crazy, including those who justify it 'cause religion.
Then you're using an entirely arbitrary definition of crazy; one which allows you to completely ignore people's self-stated reasons for their acts.
I make no "arbitrary" definition of crazy, other than most sane people find the actions of those who seem crazy hard to comprehend; i.e. 'crazy'.
You, OTOH, claim to *know* who is crazy and who isn't depending on, uh, well, some, uh, well, what is it, G? What superior knowledge lets *you* decide who is crazy and who isn't?
I'll be waiting...
you're the one who's throwing the term around. If you think the definition is logical, prove it.
my point was that if you claim one person is "crazy", then you're saying everyone who uses the exact same rationale as him is similarly "crazy".... and that therefore any adherent of salafist islam isn't actually "sanely choosing to believe what they believe", but are all suffering from some biological illness which absolves them of their choices.
Its wrong. They're not crazy. they know what they're doing.
http://www.txstate.edu/philoso.....stion.html
Also - i think there's a false choice constantly being presented, where people say
You're a) blaming the religion! you should b) blame the individuals!
there's no necessary either/or
In the depths of the cold-war, there were rebels who were openly committing mass-murder, atrocities in the name of communism (e.g. khmer rouge)
there were also self-declared communists living peacefully in communes in western states, who openly espoused support for the mass murdering fuckers.
Is it wrong to blame 'communism' for the acts of the baddies? And if you do blame communism, to some degree, does that require you to punish the non-violent communists?
You don't have to absolve the ideology entirely just because a minority represents its most-violent aspect. You also don't have to wage war against 'mere adherents' simply because they non-violently support odious beliefs.

"Also - i think there's a false choice constantly being presented, where people say

Correct. You have a whacko who adheres to a religion; both are contributing factors.
you missed the point
It's a good thing no one died. I wonder why that is.
The attacker died after the police shot him.
Huh. Turns out guns are useful after all.
You think people who advocate for gun control think that cops having guns is the problem?
Of course not. They think the cops are racist monsters AND that the police should be the only people allowed to have guns.
Makes perfect sense!

Nope.
Most are ignoramuses like you who only trust 'mommy' and 'daddy' figures, presuming no moral agency at all.
Pathetic.
It required YEARS of training for them to do so.
Can you imagine how many innocent people might have died if a civilian who had no professional training had to point his pistol in the direction of the guy hacking away with an ax and pull the trigger? Bob Costas's conservative estimate is at least half a dozen more dead Germans.

Milo permanently suspended from Twitter
Goodbye Twitter. Open commenting is the keystone of future internet endeavors.
SJWs have a bad habit of destroying businesses from the inside out. Twitter and facebook have been teetering on the edge for a while, and now Twitter looks like it's ready to take the plunge into full-retard leftism.
If Twitter wants to make itself the pro-Islamist, pro-Hillary, pro-SJW platform, well, that's why it's called creative destruction.
Having visited the facebook campus, facebook is long gone. Walking through their buildings gives the distinct impression that anybody who isn't on the SJW train need not apply. Having been to many bay area tech companies, facebook is about as bad as it gets on the "bring your various forms of leftist politics to work" front.
FB has been teasing us with its harassment of users posting Hillary or GamerGate memes for a while. It's not hard to tell where they stand even without Zuckerberg enjoying chummy dinners with Merkel's ilk.
Their continued marginalization of normal people who, as normal people are wont to do, get offended by companies that punish users for failing to toe the SJW PC bs lion, is just letting the cat out of the bag as to the companies' true allegiance, which is increasingly to leftism rather than meeting their customers' needs. All of this is just going to make the move to the next platform that much more appealing, Conquest's Law notwithstanding.
""Milo permanently suspended from Twitter""
I don't blame you for quoting buzzfeed, but "permanently suspended" is an oxymoron
The implication is that anything 'suspended' is destined to 'resume'. The term they were looking for is "banned" or "excluded" or "barred"
Tonio, you forgot to switch handles.
I thought that was in the style of Nikki? who's the resident pedant now anyway?
They wouldn't actually be a resident as you can't live in a comment section.
(hands ceremonial ruler to warren)
I quoted Buzzfeed on purpose. The permanently suspended language is the twitter language
So he violates Twitter's TOS and leads a hate-rage mob against someone who didn't do anything to deserve it and he's the one who's been wronged?
I haven't found gotten to where Milo broke the TOS, but the TOS includes: You understand that by using the Services, you may be exposed to Content that might be offensive, harmful, inaccurate or otherwise inappropriate, or in some cases, postings that have been mislabeled or are otherwise deceptive.
Is this what Milo broke? You are responsible for your use of the Services, for any Content you provide, and for any consequences thereof, including the use of your Content by other users and our third party partners. You understand that your Content may be syndicated, broadcast, distributed, or published by our partners and if you do not have the right to submit Content for such use, it may subject you to liability. Twitter will not be responsible or liable for any use of your Content by Twitter in accordance with these Terms. You represent and warrant that you have all the rights, power and authority necessary to grant the rights granted herein to any Content that you submit.
I mean, Milo never posted that Leslie Jones was an Ape(like other users did). His worst, as documented by the buzzfeed link is that he called her illiterate.
Here's what he said in his movie review: Patty is a two dimensional racist stereotype by even the most forgiving measure.
Patty is the worst of the lot. The actress is spectacularly unappealing, even relative to the rest of the odious cast. But it's her flat-as-a-pancake black stylings that ought to have irritated the SJWs. I don't get offended by such things, but they should.
Buzzfeed says he "incited" his followers to harrass her. If true then he violated the bolded section.
Harassment: You may not incite or engage in the targeted abuse or harassment of others. Some of the factors that we may consider when evaluating abusive behavior include:
if a primary purpose of the reported account is to harass or send abusive messages to others;
if the reported behavior is one-sided or includes threats;
if the reported account is inciting others to harass another account; and
if the reported account is sending harassing messages to an account from multiple accounts.
Does that negate this part?: You understand that by using the Services, you may be exposed to Content that might be offensive, harmful, inaccurate or otherwise inappropriate, or in some cases, postings that have been mislabeled or are otherwise deceptive.
And like I said, the worst Milo did was call her "illilterate" on Twitter. Is that inciteful? Or, is a movie review that he did not quote count as inciteful?
I'm just going with what Buzzfeed (dear God, Buzzfeed) said. I don't know the timeline or what was said.
And where did he encourage anyone to be mean to Leslie Jones?
I don't know. I'm not going any deeper than the Buzzfeed article you posted.
You are hung up on the buzzfeed part of it.
You posted the article!
I posted it instead of the Breitbart article. I wanted to be as non-partisan as possible.
As plenty of people are pointing out, Twitter has plenty of pro-ISIS accounts that regularly tweet death threats to Milo and others. Yet ISIS stays and pro-Trump homo goes. Hmmm.
You'd almost think that the delicate SJW flowers that run twitter were looking for a reason to purge their diverse dialogue of the wrong kind of diversity.
Knarf, you are morally right, of course. But, as Heroic Mulatto pointed out below, it is a matter of Private vs Public.
I take it for granted that people posting on Reason are past Libertarianism 101.
Ouch.
I can't be the only one who gives zero shits about this "news" story, can I?
What do you mean by zero shits? Do you not care if people are banned for being jerks on the internet?
As long as its a privately-held company and not a government entity, no, not really.
I agree. Private vs Public is, of course, the answer.
How exactly does that work? is he responsible for the acts of his readers?
by correlation, is Reason responsible for everything people say in the comments?
Are we talking legal responsibility or moral?
If he encouraged his followers to harass her, then under Twitter's TOS he is responsible.
Did he encourage them? I need proof of that. Because I don't see where he said "Send Leslie Jones racist messages on twitter"
Of course this is Buzzfeed going off of what Twitter is saying so there's an excellent chance that this is an overreaction about Milo's actual as opposed to inferred actions on Twitter's part.
I quoted as much as I know. I haven't tried to find all of Milo's tweets since he posted that review. But if Milo is guilty of incitement, then whoever commented on the infamous Preet feed about woodchipping deserve to be banned from Reason.
That's a much different TOS.
As opposed to: You understand that by using the Services, you may be exposed to Content that might be offensive, harmful, inaccurate or otherwise inappropriate, or in some cases, postings that have been mislabeled or are otherwise deceptive.
The ownership question is not addressed in the Twitter TOS, but the Twitter TOS is basically saying: There are assholes on here.
And then there's this: You are responsible for your use of the Services
Doesn't that include your reading of Tweets? IAMNAL. I guess looking at it further, you are right Warren: You retain your rights to any Content you submit, post or display on or through the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying Content on or through the Services, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, reproduce, process, adapt, modify, publish, transmit, display and distribute such Content in any and all media or distribution methods (now known or later developed).
So Milo is fucked.
Why didn't you copy this to me earlier? Have you read the Twitter TOS?
One other thing. I like you _Warren_. You're like Agile Cyborg.3 or something. But I want facts(not references to buzzfeed articles that I referenced). It appears that Twitter can do whatever they want with Milo's tweets based on the TOS. I think it's not helpful for open dialogue, but they have it in their TOS.
You really gotta hand it to this guy. He's made himself a celebrity by sheer force of troll. To be that good at pushing people's buttons is a hard skill to master. Not necessarily an admirable one, but impressive anyway, I suppose.
They REALLY hate him.
It is what makes him admirable. He pushes buttons, and the response is screaming from the left, not a cool and collected response.
Paging Crusty.
