After the Election, Things Will Get Worse
Clinton vs. Trump the ultimate political race to the bottom.
Can American democracy survive this presidential election? We assume any framework that has endured through the Civil War, the Great Depression, the violent upheaval of the 1960s and more can survive anything. But no earthly institution is eternal, and it's hard to think of a campaign that has done more damage to our system of government than this one.
Amid our misery, we take comfort in the belief that once the election is over, things will get better.
More likely, they will get worse.
On the Republican side is a candidate who appears incapable of telling the truth, trying to gain a basic understanding of policy or speaking in anything but childishly simplistic sound bites. Donald Trump has made himself so radioactive that for the first time in memory, dozens of Republican politicians are shunning their nominee, repudiating many of his statements and boycotting their national convention.
Has any major-party nominee ever been tarred with the brush of racism by the party's highest-ranking officeholder as Trump was by House Speaker Paul Ryan? Has any former president in the past century refused to endorse his own party's nominee—much less two former presidents—as both Bushes have done?
On the other side, has any major-party candidate ever come so close to being indicted just before being nominated as Hillary Clinton did? Has one ever been criticized more thoroughly and damningly by the director of the FBI than she was on Tuesday, when James Comey presented a picture of her as dishonest, reckless and incompetent?
None of this comes as a shocking discovery. From their decades in the public eye, we knew Trump as a bombastic fraud with an ego as big as the Titanic and Clinton as a ruthless power seeker with a compulsion to deceive. Yet the political order has enabled them to reach the threshold of our highest office.
The latest Gallup Poll found that these two arouse more negative feelings than any presidential nominee in the past 60 years. Barry Goldwater was perceived in "highly unfavorable" terms by 26 percent of Americans on his way to one of the most crushing defeats in American history. Clinton is regarded that way by 33 percent of Americans, and Trump by 42 percent.
Those figures came in before the FBI director's report and before the controversy over Trump's use of anti-Semitic imagery. They also come before the candidates and their allied super PACs have spent hundreds of millions of dollars showcasing the flaws of the other. By election night, the loser may qualify as the most hated person in America—and the president-elect may be the runner-up.
The problem is not so much that voters will spend the next four months being disgusted by Trump and Clinton before having to suppress nausea long enough to cast a ballot for one of them. It's that the citizenry will be forced to submit to one or the other of them for four years that may feel like 40.
Consider how bitter and polarized the climate has grown under Barack Obama, a president who has a temperate disposition, is careful with words and has managed two terms without a major scandal or catastrophe. Under him, two costly wars have wound down, the economy has climbed back from the worst downturn since the Depression and crime has declined. But many Republicans regard him as not only unsatisfactory but completely illegitimate. They will almost certainly greet Clinton with even more hostility.
If Trump wins, though, Democrats will not be alone in seeing him as an intolerable usurper. After George W. Bush emerged victorious from the five-week legal battle over the 2000 election, his inauguration attracted thousands of demonstrators chanting, "Hail to the thief," with a few throwing eggs and bottles. Imagine the protests that would engulf the capital for a Trump inauguration.
Is America lurching toward collapse, disintegration or civil war? It may sound far-fetched. But delegates to this year's Texas state Republican convention spent two hours debating whether to put a plank on secession in their platform.
The simple fact is that the next president will be detested by half the country, if not more, from day one. How long till impeachment hearings begin?
We don't know who will be in charge of the next administration. But it already has a haunting theme song: "Eve of Destruction."

You think Brexit is a disaster? It’s a summer picnic compared to the aftermath of a Trump win. The US has survived a lot in its history, but there has never been a person with more of a potential to destroy America than Donald Trump. It’s amazing that his supporters refuse to see that.
Isn’t “fundamentally transform” basically the same as “destroy”?
If you are niave enough to think that Brexit was a disaster then you’ll believe almost anything.
This.
You’re giving him waaaaaay too much credit
I think you misspelled Hillary Clinton ….
+! to you sir.
Uhh…actually no you’re wrong unless you willfully ignore all of U.S. history. Even just in the last century FDR and Hoover did more to destroy the U.S. than Trump ever could. That’s before you even go far enough back to start talking about an actual armed Civil War you reactionary idiot.
Even between the two retards that are about to fight over the Presidency, Hillary is a bigger danger.
That’s why I’m voting for Johnson; because even though I don’t even particularly like the guy I don’t loathe him.
Brexit may be a disaster, but not for the British people. Quite the opposite. Substitute Clinton where you have Trump and I’ll agree.

I’m making over $15k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.
This is what I do_________ http://www.trends88.com
Brexit is not a disaster, things will get worse after the election even if it were Ron Paul winning the presidency (he said himself there would be some hurt while things transitioned to freedom), and now even more so after THIS election because all economic and political conditions are ready for catastrophe.
If Hillary wins, it will be by fraud. Democrat candidates ran the other way as hard as they could in 2000, people are tired of Bush-Clinton-Obama.
But this mad frenzy about Trump, the Republicans that are running the other way from Trump are not scared off by his personality nor his politically-disapproved pronouncements. Reason Magazine has run away from reason with him and I don’t know why. They are shunning him, or trying to, or trying to tamp him down because HE SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF THE NEOCONS AND THE WARMONGERS!!
He has blasted the globalist-socialist mind control efforts to further centralize global control over our personal lives and choices. He might even really try to bring a lot of those troops home from Japan and Korea and the China Sea and the Middle East.
Brexit is not a disaster and Trump will not ‘destroy America’. Jesus fucking Christ.
If either Trump or Clinton were statesmen, they could reach out to the other side and begin to repair things.
I KNOW Clinton will, however, double down on punishing her enemies, the republicans.
I HOPE that Trump won’t go after people not in his favor but there is no indication he will do so.
I is truly sad that these two fucking bozos (notice thats free speech and hate speech, something either one will likely crack down on from the presidency) are the major candidates for President.
I really hope that Trump does go after his and our enemies – the 2.8 million civilian employees of the Federal Government. I wonder if he’s bright enough to combine our disdain for them with his “you’re fired” catchphrase? A war on bureaucrats and regulators would be glorious.
The President IS a civilian employee of the Federal government. I don’t think I’d want a President who considers himself his own enemy. OK, I know what you mean, more or less. I wonder how many the President actually has authority to personally fire.
All the President has to do is withhold funds from federal agencies. Then the layoffs will commence.
It would be pretty fucking funny to see those parasites’ lives destroyed the way many of them destroy the lives of real Americans.
Trump is a Democrat so I don’t see any particular reason he would try to punish them for anything. I’m sure he has particular people he hates, like entire swaths of Americans based on their religious affiliation, but Democrats? Nah.
Trump is, above all, a dealmaker and I have no doubt he’ll take great pleasure in reaching out to people who didn’t support him.
If people actually listened to his speeches instead of just assuming he reads from Mein Kampf for an hour, they’d hear him say exactly that. He often talks about how he looks forward to convincing the people who don’t agree with him and how he thinks there are good ideas on both sides of the aisle.
OT: Jon Jones failed a drug test and is out of UFC 200. You have got to be fucking kidding me. What a train wreck of a human being.
“Under him, two costly wars have wound down, the economy has climbed back from the worst downturn since the Depression and crime has declined.”
…
All of this happened despite Barry’s best efforts to the contrary.
Iraq hasn’t been wound down. It’s just been shifted to a particular region of Itaq and expanded into Syria…with the help of Barry and Hillary’s gun-running from Libya…which they destabilized by having their head of state assassinated and their government (which had halted its WMD program and turned over all info about it) overthrown by Islamist nutballs.
Yeah, great fuckjng job they’ve done.
Is this a Reason article, or is Chapman writing progressive fan fiction?
“…two costly wars have wound down, the economy has climbed back from the worst downturn since the Depression and crime has declined…”
It’s got to be one of the stupidest sentence in the article.
Iraq’s war has NOT wound down, it has expanded into Syria and brought Saudi Arabia and Turkey into the mix and has even boiled over into Europe with the millions-man mass globalist-arranged Soros migration going on. Wound down? BwaHahahaha.
Clinton-Obama also expanded the war(s) to Libya. It has hardly wound down. It is worse than even and is turning into an ISIS-driven extended civil war that thrives on the stock of American-supplied armaments given to them. It is also turning into a genocide against BLACK Libyans. African-Americans should take note of this.
Afghanistan is also heating up now into a slow boil, with the Taliban resurgence.
GIMME A BREAK!
Can American democracy survive this presidential election?
I thought we were a Constitutional Republic? Oh yeah, it’s a Chapman.
Obama, a president who … has managed two terms without a major scandal or catastrophe.
*** face palm ***
Forget it – it’s Chapman.
It’s incredible. WTF does he consider a major scandal — WW3?
Everything Republicans do is scandalous and nothing the Democrats do. Why he writes here I do not know.
I could think of five just off the top of my head, I found that line particularly idiotic even in a Chapman Joint.
When you keep everything secret and prosecute whistleblowers, you can escape major scandals.
And have a media that refuses to investigate, ask hard questions, or hold anyone to account.
Yep. Very easy to avoid scandals when the press acts as your PR organ and popular culture elevates you to a deity.
the citizenry will be forced to submit to one or the other of them for four years that may feel like 40.
Operative word: “forced”.
Forced, eh? SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW?
Indeed. *I* we take comfort in the belief that Vermin Supreme will win by a landslide.
*we*
*** gets coffee ***
Mr. Supreme’s plan to implement mandatory daily tooth-brushing, while not exactly libertarian, doesn’t really affect those of us who already brush our teeth every day.
Trojan horse for mandatory details of “how” you brush, enforced by criminal statutes presumably, and child abuse prosecutions for parents who don’t monitor their children’s regular brushing.
Let’s face a few simple facts, the first being that this isn’t the same government our founding fathers envisioned. Second is that few of our citizens use their heads for little more hat racks. And finally since the federal government decided to stick their noses into the educational system it has turned into a indoctrination day care center. The Washington DC elites treat the citizens like mushrooms and as long as people have their IPhones and reality TV they could care less. Stop trying to fix America because it’s been dead since before the civil war.
^This
“Stop trying to fix America because it’s been dead since before the civil war.”
I wouldn’t go nearly that far back, but definitely dead since about 1972.
The US has been degenerating since 1789. It began almost immediately with the Federalists. Jefferson bought us some time, but by 1900 we were well on our way to establishing Hamilton’s American System.
Plus mad-fan sports events.
The root of a lot of the problems this country has is the fact that the presidency has become much more powerful than it was intended. I think reason generally understands that the imperial presidency is a problem. Given that, I can’t quite understand why they think electing an unpopular candidate President would be a bad thing. I am skeptical that congress would ever hold Hillary accountable for anything, but a lot of Democrats hate her guts. So, they might. And I absolutely think Congress would impeach and remove Trump from office if it ever had an excuse.
I really don’t see how an unpopular President who is actually held accountable by Congress is a bad thing. Especially after the last 8 years, I think we can all agree that the last thing the country needs is another light giver.
This is quite literally the only thing that might make me support Trump. The only way that I can see Congress paring back the imperial presidency is if someone like him (actively antagonistic towards both party establishments) holds the office, and they will only do it out of spite.
I really dislike Hitler references, but in 1932 Germany there were many who thought they could control the new German Chancellor. They guessed wrong. Now Trump may not be inherently violent, but then again he may be.
So what else is new, after Pearl Harbor (invited by Roosevelt, with Japanese encryption broken), Gulf of Tonkin, Bay of Pigs, missile crisis brinkmanship, FBI “terrorist plots”, Afghanistan, Iraq (twice), Libya, Syria, Ukraine, NATO brinkmanship in East Europe, Navy patrols off Russia’s coast lines, encouraging the Turkey shoot down of a Russian aircraft, we already have “inherently violent” in our ruling class based in the imperial capital of Washington D. C..
One candidate demanded intervention in Syria and Libya both, called for a new U.S-enforced “no fly zone” over Syria to prop up ISIS against one of the best protectors of religious minorities in the Middle East, gives Putin a “Hitler” nickname.
Compare that to the other of the two who has said WW2 is over, NATO’s original mission is dead, wants to quit the bellicose NATO entanglement, praised the liberating Brexit vote, talks about bringing the troops home from Japan, Korea, Europe, and the Middle East, calls out Bush and the Republicans for LYING about the Iraq war. Only when prodded and poked, blusters with opening negotiation gambits and tough guy talk.

Democrats haven’t been holding there own accountable. If anything they do everything they can to help them hide or downplay whatever is wrong. Did you not hear the hillary fbi verdict?
Hate her or not, she’s their ‘guy’, so they’ll protect her to hold on to power.
They really are an undemanding lot, aren’t they?
I think it’s even worse than that, not that you’re wrong mind you.
I think most people want to be ruled. It’s just that they want to be ruled by a beneficent dictator. So basically people want to be ruled by a Unicorn from Valhalla, but so far one has never been spotted outside a manifesto.
The best that can be said about this election is it holds a slim chance of breaking the two party stranglehold. If for example there were enough public pressure to get Gary Johnson and that green lunatic Jill Stein in the debates I think you could actually see them pull 25% or more between them. At that point getting third parties in the debate could become an expectation and voting for them could become normal.
Unlikely to happen of course.
The bigger problem is that most of the votes that Johnson and Stein will get will be the result of people not liking these nominees. Chances are those votes will go back to their respective parties next election when there is a more acceptable nominee.
Presuming of course there will be another election, or that either party will put forward anyone more palatable next time around. No guarantees on either of those fronts in my opinion.
If there are more acceptable nominees, isn’t that a good thing too?
Is it? Then we’ll just go back to the same old nonsense. Keep in mind that being “more acceptable” doesn’t mean they’re even remotely good; they’ll still be evil authoritarians. I want to see the two party system crash and revamp our voting system, so a continuous stream of terrible candidates might be good to wake the moronic general public up. It won’t happen, though.
Always predict the worst and they’ll hail you as a prophet.
We can only pray that one of them dies or is assassinated. Preferably before the election.
Or that through some sort of miracle, Gary Johnson becomes a viable candidate.
Maybe Gary can commute or pardon all of the people rotting in prison for national security crimes, since he apparently thinks they are no big deal, at least when Hillary does it.
Maybe he can. I imagine that he would pardon Edward Snowden as a first order of business. Can’t imagine Trump or Hillary doing that.
I would imagine you are delusional. He is about as likely to pardon Snowden as he is Charley Manson. He thinks it is no big deal when Hillary does it because she is another politician. And Johnson is a politician.
And what do you want to bet that if Hillary wins, Johnson drops the LP like an ugly rebound date and accepts a position in her administration?
You did notice that Johnson ran for president before, on the Libertarian ticket, right?
“And what do you want to bet that if Hillary wins, Johnson drops the LP like an ugly rebound date and accepts a position in her administration?”
I’ll take that bet.
Chapman needs to take a hint from Jonnson and stop with the pot, at least for a few hours when he writes a Reason article.
Trump is a truly awful candidate, but in what reality would he be a bigger threat as president than Hillary? She is an acknowledged criminal who has most recently escaped indictment on the eve of her nomination. Do you think that, as pres, she would suddenly get scared of getting caught and temper her ways? It’s far more likely she would be emboldened to push the envelope. Why does Chapman apparently think that becoming POTUS would moderate her worst traits?
As for Trump, his racist talk, reprehensible as it is, is just that – TALK. It is mostly meant to appease his low-IQ followers. I don’t buy for a minute that a New York born-and-bred, largely non-religious businessman — who works in real estate/construction of all things — really has that much personal animosity toward foreigners, ethnics, and gays. That said, his authoritarian ideas and hatred of free trade is more than enough for me to condemn him.
But Chapman, ask yourself this: which of these two clods is more than likely to start a major new war to add to the handful we’re already in?
Dude, you need to lay off the intoxicants a bit when writing Reasonable fare.
As for Trump, his racist talk, reprehensible as it is, is just that – TALK. It is mostly meant to appease his low-IQ followers.
How is this any less delusional than aforesaid belief that Hillary would temper her ways as president?
There is literally zero evidence to believe that Trump is going to moderate his apparent racist views AT ALL. Why the fuck would a non-racist go around talking like a racist in order to win votes? That makes no fucking sense whatsoever.
All I’m saying is that Trump didn’t show a lot of racist tendencies PRIOR to running, and it’s not like he hasn’t been in the public eye for a long time.
Doesn’t it strike you as weird that a man well into middle-age suddenly wakes up one morning and suddenly realizes he hates Mexicans, loves reading the Bible, can’t stand gays, etc.?
He didn’t display these tendencies to any noticeable extent in numerous interviews and TV appearances before, despite consistently living in a huge cosmopolitan city where he was bound to rub elbows with all kinds of people.
All I’m saying is that it’s odd. Sure, maybe he got a blow to the head and it changed his personality…that does happen. But maybe, just maybe, he decided he was going to pander to what he identified as a constituency he could go out and grab in order to gain political power. Maybe he is mostly saying what he thinks they want to hear while often inwardly laughing at the troll-job he is pulling on those same rubes.
Political convenience cannot explain a LOT of the things he’s saying.
Besides, he deserves the thanks of freedom-lovers for smashing through the prohibited-words
I totally agree Inigo.
Ingo.
Trump’s only real danger is that his failures will be construed as a failure of capitalism and market economics. That, i’m afraid, will usher in a far more psychotic Marxists than Obama and we will become Cuba.
I agree that Trump is not a racist. He is just a complete moron. Hillary is too. She just has better protection from the media.
To me, as mush as I despise Trump’s ideas on markets, is it complete heresy to discuss whether or not allowing thousands of muslims in might pose a risk similar to what is happening in Europe.? Point being that all rhetoric aside from the trump camp, a very valid argument could be made that the current flight from the middle east might also be manifesting in a 1000 year crusade by these nuts. Trump is completely ignorant on the Mexican issue and his accusations however. Give me some Mexicans all day for work. They are better at it, and happier for the work.
What ‘racist’ talk? WTF are you talking about?
They’ll get worse?
Ask Bailey for a copy of “The End of Doom.” Oh wait, only libertarians cane doomsayers. Forgot.
We don’t cane anyone unless it turns them on
Benghazi is not a major scandel?
Didn’t a Fast and Furious gun just show up in one of the terrorists attacks last week? That’s gotta be on par with Benghazi scandal-wise.
Steve, just today Bailey has an article here where he asks incredulously how is it possible Americans are so pessimistic about the future when things keep getting better.
Maybe they are pessimistic because you are encouraging them to in fact BE pessimistic.
“Has any former president in the past century refused to endorse his own party’s nominee?much less two former presidents?as both Bushes have done?”
Uhh…that’s basically an endorsement if neither of those douche bags support him. I mean, I still hate the whole group but not a whole lot of people are going to appreciate a Bush saying “I like this guy!” at this point. I mean, there might be a few hard right (R)’s but Donny doesn’t need a Bush endorsement for the die-hards to vote for him in the first place.
after the elections things will get worse we are far from the expectations of society , and campaigns ever spoken by the candidate just as sweet guise of political swindlers
obat aborsi | Jual Obat aborsi
The implication that a Clinton presidency would be anywhere NEAR as disastrous as a Trump one is ridiculous. I know it is in fashion to say “both parties suck,” but there are degrees of “suck,” and the difference in this case is YUGE.
i disagree on the yugeness of the differences. Their “policy” positions arent so different. You just have to decide whether you prefer your condescension polished or low brow.
That’s absurd. Clinton is an amoral, bloodthirsty autocrat with no concern for what others think of her. Unless Ryan and co. grow spines, Hillary will spend eight years doing whatever she wants, as though Congress doesn’t even exist, and will import another ten or twenty million ringers to ensure that the Democrats never lose another presidential election.
If the GOP doesn’t get serious about immigration control or reining in the foreign adventurism (remember that awful comment racist Trump said the other night about Saddam? He was in the middle of a rant about how the US destabilized the region and allowed terrorists to run wild, whereas before they’d been kept in check by awful, terrible Saddam), there’s not going to be a recognizable America to save within the next couple of generations.
Pretending that Hillary is just a more corrupt version of same-old, same-old is moronic. She’ll stack the Court, destroy what’s left of the BoR, and ensure that the nation’s decline can’t be stopped by embedding machine politics in the executive.
Hillary will be a thousand times worse.
If you visit the island of Bali , please contact us for meudahkan means you during your traveling in bali
sewa mobil di bali | sewa mobil murah di bali
Barack Obama, a president who has a temperate disposition, LOL, Unless you are a white conservative his actions are why race has become an overwhelming false issue, and temperance on the battle field only gets people killed
The only good thing about a Hillary win is that she will not likely serve more than a year or two before she is forced to resign once the years of shit she has been swimming in finally overflows from the sewer.
The only good thing about a Trump win will be that maybe a lot of proggies will finally make good on their threat to move to Canada.
I kind of hope Hillary wins so capitalism cannot be blamed for the sh*t. Then again, she might be an unperceivable tyrant.
Don’t worry timbo, they will always find a way to blame capitalism and corporations. If the democrats win the presidency and both houses of congress, they will be sure to punish “the corporations” for past misdeeds. Remember, proggies are never to blame for anything.
Fuck that shit. Canada doesn’t want America’s progs.
It’s a sad day that regardless of who the next president is our only hope rest with something as corrupt and dysfunctional as congress.
The only real hope is that dissatisfaction continues to grow while a voice emerges to steer the conversation towards liberty and the rule of law.
You bet things will get worse. Once again, this election is the perfect smokescreen.
The real disaster has always laid at the feet of the central bankers and cronyists. It matters not which puppet for special interests is in office. No candidate is saying anything about the spending, MICC, or the FED and their busted antics. No candidate is really getting deep into the failures of Europe’s socialists states and our adoption of their policies. Trump acts like he might be he is a war monger and loves FED manipulations.
The most destructive thing Trump will do is convince the morons that capitalism is to blame for the impending implosion. Once the Marxists have convinced everyone that Trump is a capitalist, then another Castro will be our next president.
The similarities to Cuba’s demise are striking.
I think you need to stop and look closely at a book by Os Guinness about “The Golden Triangle of Freedom” then work very hard to inform the citizens of the need to keep the three sides of this triangle in tact. If we don’t then we be going down a very slippery slope.
After the Election, Things Will Get Worse
Clinton vs. Trump the ultimate political race to the bottom.
Nothing is further from the truth.
Trump the Grump will give Amerika the fascism it so desperately seeks.
If he loses, Heil Hitlary will accelerate the march of The Glorious People’s Revolution we all covet so much and ensure we are all enslaved properly in our newly developed socialist slave state.
Talk about a win-win situation!
“Can American democracy survive this presidential election?”
THE USA is Not a Democracy – the USA is a Constitutional REPUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The USA was, not is, a constitutional republic.
Which is the same as a constitutional democracy.
Vote libertarian….
With this asinine delusion statement: “Consider how bitter and polarized the climate has grown under Barack Obama, a president who has a temperate disposition, is careful with words and has managed two terms without a major scandal or catastrophe.” Chapman proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that his head is so far up his ass it will take a surgical procedure to remove it.
“Consider how bitter and polarized the climate has grown under Barack Obama…”
Okay, let’s consider that.
“…a president who has a temperate disposition…”
He’s too stupid to be quick-witted without his trusty teleprompter.
“…is careful with words…”
Have you heard him stutter repeatedly over a single word?
“…and has managed two terms without a major scandal or catastrophe.”
Almost $20 trillion in national debt isn’t a catastrophe?
“Under him, two costly wars have wound down…”
No they haven’t. Ignored wars aren’t “wound down.” And the idiot gave Iraq back to the ragheads.
“…the economy has climbed back from the worst downturn since the Depression…”
Nothing more than a paltry two-percent growth rate during his entire term is NOT an economy that’s “climbed back.” It’s an economy going nowhere.
“…and crime has declined.”
Check the homicide rate in the idiot’s hometown of Chicago — the murder capital of the planet.
“But many Republicans regard him as not only unsatisfactory but completely illegitimate.”
I regard him a lot worse than that. Barack Obama is a traitor, who should be impeached and in prison.
“They will almost certainly greet Clinton with even more hostility.”
You betcha. Four more years of those maggots and America will finally be the banana republic they wanted.
From the article above:
Sounds like anyone else you know?
It’s like the guy wrote Trump’s play book.
Damn that “Libertarian Establishment”!
I hate those guys.
Did you just copyright a fucking comment? Jesus, dude.
Good idea copyright your comment. I’m sure lots of people would rip it off otherwise.
He just defe being his rights, dude. Some libertarian you are.
Comedy Gold.
He is ‘unHihnged’.
Defending,damnit
Make that “copyrighting”. Doh!
How does that make it less ridiculous?
