Is This Gary Johnson/Bill Weld Spot the Greatest Presidential Ad Ever?
LBJ's Daisy, Nixon's "Crime," Dukakis' "Snoopy" tank ride, you've got competition.
Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson and his running mate Bill Weld have just released a masterful ad that touts their impressive records as two-term governors (of New Mexico and Massachusetts, respectively) while drawing sharp distinctions among their positions and those of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
This is hands down powerful, powerful stuff and highlights Johnson's interest in capturing what he calls the "broad middle" of Americans who are socially liberal, fiscally conservative, and desperate for "small, efficient government" that gets core tasks done without blowing up the budget to pad the payrolls of favored businesses, bomb and drone foreign countries into the Stone Age, and strangle us all in regulatory red tape.
Take a look and comment it up below.

Well, I thought with a name like Johnson, it was impossible to come up with an emasculating hashtag, but #AreYouIn just about does it.

Shoulda gone with #DoYouWantToFeelTheJohnson?

I wouldn't know. Their little video crashed my phone in a way I've never seen before. I had to look up how to hard reboot it. I figure it's all the NSA trackers attached.

That's a good one. Someone gave Johnson some good coaching, or else did some excellent editing. Short, concise, substantive (and in some respects, wrong, but the audience won't know that). If the ad was all I knew about those guys, I'd vote for them in a second.
(as against Hil or Trump, I mean)
It wasn't bad. I admit, my first reaction was LOL. I mean, who directed that? It looks like a corporate training video.
But the message, yeah. That was decent. And Weld doesn't look like such a stiff suit. Not bad. Not bad at all.
Hey, I thought it was great!
I'd vote for the platform of the party they failed to mention. Granted there is a case to be made for not mentioning libertarian--mainly that the other candidates were a girl-bullying prohibitionist, a murder-legalizing anarchist and a butthurt nihilist (who expected the nomination half a year after finding out about the party).
But thank Bob we have genuine libertarian candidates running for both Hice of Congress and a passel of state, city and muni positions, ALL committed to cutting taxation and other coercion in defense of individual rights.
It's a new dawn! Volunteers of America!
I've worked successfully in entertainment Marketing for the last 25 Years.
I (and many others, it seems) wonder if the Libertarian "brand" needs a complete re-think?
Thusly, I'm not convinced shying away from the Libertarian tag line in this spot is much of a mis-step?
I mean, come on. "Be Libertarian With Me" was just really embarrassing.
I know a bit about Johnson. I was disgusted that he won the vote for NM governor. On the 2nd election I voted for him. Since then, I've been comparing governors to Johnson-He won that. The governor that replaced him used the NM state surplus and bought about a dozen planes. Money gone. Johnson also improved education.
bought a dozen planes? For what? You guys have your own military down there? Oh wait, it's New Mexico. Guess you do.
I'd like to know what's "wrong" in the commercial. Nothing appeared to be wrong to me.
I didn't see anything about free tuition or getting rid of those to blame for all my personal - as well as our national - problems. I didn't see anything about fighting our enemies abroad or putting those fat cats in their place. I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING ABOUT THE CHILDREN.
"CLINTRUMP" is just one less N away from being dirty, though. I kind of liked that.
Rump ticl or rump lict?
You need to think dirtier. Are you sure you're in the right place?
You mean .... L next to I looks like .....
Hmm...for some reason I read that as CLITRUMP...
*vomits from his soul*
Like a tossup between the American and British meanings of fanny.
+10pts for soul vomit
If you read from a distance, it says CUNTRUMP.
"Clintrump" sounds like a dirty word, so I looked it up on Urban Dictionary. Turns out it IS a dirty word! It means the sexual act of telling the American people to grab their ankles and enjoy it or they'll get barrel again.
I'll just coyly act like I didn't get it... Petr Beckmann said language was a toy--just not THAT kind of toy.
"I didn't see anything about ... getting rid of those to blame for all my personal - as well as our national - problems"
You missed the obvious idea of getting rid of Obama/Biden/Clinton and replacing them with Johnson/Weld and someone else for Sec. of State. As for your personal problems, who's to blame for them? But then Clinton (and probably Trump as well) may have the idea of getting you into the military, and sending you to the Middle East to fix your personal problems. Kind of like how she fixed Ambassador Steven's personal and professional problems.
That is actually pretty good, I must say.
Bah, this ad didn't tell me who I'm supposed to blame for all of my problems. So I give it one out of four stars.
Not only that, it didn't say anything about how Johnson/ Weld plan to punish my enemies who are to blame for all my personal failing, and as Fist pointed out above, not one word about TEH CHILDREN! WHY DO JOHNSON/ WELD HATE CHILDREN!11!11!!!!!11!!!!!! /sarc
Steve Martin agrees.
Clintrump?
Meanwhile, candidate Darrell Castle of the Constitution Party issues this:
"There are reasons why attacks usually occur in gun free zones and not at NRA conventions. People in gun free enclaves are not only unarmed they have a cower in fear and hope he spares me mindset. No one rushes the shooter while he is changing magazines they just wait to die. The surveillance state and a disarmed people are the government's answer but that is not the correct answer. In this world there are wolves and there are sheep but there are also sheep dogs. If you pull the sheep dog's teeth the wolves will run riot.
"Disarmed people are defeated people just as a defeated army stacks its arms in front of the victors. Armed people are free people because they have the means of resistance in their hands. The American colonists were threatened with disarmament by the British and they rose to rebellion. Defense of one's self and family is everyone's responsibility. The government cannot and will not do it for you."
You're going to put Crusty Juggler on the fainting couch with this kind of talk.
I do need a big, strong, masculine man like you to protect me.
Just out of curiosity, you weren't in Times Square this morning by any chance, were you?
I wish I had that guys figure.
Sheep dogs don't protect sheep for the benefit of the sheep, they protect sheep for the benefit of the shepherd.
Sheepdogs don't usually protect sheep at all.
They prevent them from getting away.

Unfortunately, googling "Johnson Weld" just gets you in trouble.
But that's just another reason not to use Bing as your primary search engine.
Big Bing fan. Don't understand why it gets so much shit from Google people. They're almost as bad as Apple people nowadays.
Duck Duck Go or go home.
I like the name "Google"better. That's all I've got.
Bing has a rep for being really good for certain types of searches.
To the the point where if you're Binging things, you should probably wash your hands afterwards. No judgement, but nobody wants to shake a hairy palm.
Four out of Five Crustys agree; the fist-bump is the way to go.
I did that Bing "blind taste test" challenge they offered where you give five search terms and you choose which sets of results you think are better. Out of the five, I chose Google's results five times.
I don't have artificial love for Google or hatred for Microsoft. In fact, I respected Microsoft for offering the challenge at all. But when the results are so different, well, that's a wrap.
After several years on a Mac, 10 is a refreshing experience.
I hate hate hate that if your computer is connected via Ethernet cable, you can't (easily) shut off automatic updates.

Isn't "You can 'Google' it" now like "hand me a 'Kleenex', or -- for the Southerners -- "I'd like a 'Coke'"?
Do you drive a jeep?
I did until the starter crapped out on me the other day. 289,000 miles on the odo, that sort of thing is gonna happen.
I have sometimes written that "I googoled it." googol.com resolves to a math site, natch. BITD, I used to use metacrawler, which now resolves to "excite, powered by dogpile." I'm sure their are people nostalgic for gopher, or Archie. Geek away at this Search Engine History page. - Kevin R
This is the last place I'd expect folks to not parse Go Ogle as a verb phrase...
Even "Johnson Weld porn" on Bing gets you nuffin.
They are so boring, even Bing can't make 'em dirty.
Not bad. Something about Johnson's delivery of his lines still bugs me though. He sounds almost like he's speaking to little children or a host of some Nickelodeon kid's show, but that's just me. I liked the use of "Clintrump" though, that was a nice touch. It sets them up as an alternative to both and makes clear in two syllables that they're trying to appeal to voters who are dissatisfied with both.
Too bad - Clinton was a great kid and valued colleague.
/weld
He is.
Damn, beat me to it.
True dat! By letting some harmless libertarian impersonators piss off their Go Pee buddies, we are going to upset applecarts in all manner of down-ballot races. So long as the GOP loses--and the odds just went from 3 to 1 to 7 to 2 they lose--we are protected from another prohibitionist asset-forfeiture crash and depression.
Economic freedom is the main thing. That women preserve individual rights will, of course, be icing on the cake.
Sharing this on some conservative sites I follow, just to see the Trump folks lose their collective %%%t and to see the soc-cons freak out over issues they should have gotten over by now.
What issues are those?
And why are SoCons supporting Trump?
They really really don't want to bake a cake for a gay man. That's what's really important. Much more important than war or the economy.
Technically, the war and the economy are more important than sexual assault, too, so I suppose SoCons should not fuss about some German women (who are probably racists anyway) getting groped in Cologne.
I mean, there are more important issues out there, like the European Union.
If you reply that the migrant-groper issue and the European Union issue are connected, I counter that the economy and the fate of small businesses crushed under the state's bootheel in the name of "civil rights" is connected to the economy.
Oh, and of course we're expected to believe that people who get a visible erection at the thought of crushing religiously-conservative small businesses actually care about the economy in a libertarian sense.
Quit lookin' at their erections, Eddie!
We're not going to get Freedom of Association rights restored from any of the candidates running (unfortunately) so I don't see why not voting for Johnson over that one issue makes sense considering all of the issues he is better on.
Cuz Eddie's butthurt and only cares about a single issue?
Which I cover up by posting on other issues like police abuse, etc.
Eddie only cares about Civil War trivia?
It's really hard to care about the religious freedoms of SoCons.
I mean I do care, since freedom of religion is one of the issues I think is most important...
But it's still really hard to be upset that the group who ONLY ever seems to be pro-free religion when it affects THEM, personally, is facing discrimination due to their religion.
And when they DO get together to pass laws to expand religious freedoms they end up with laws that conveniently only affect beliefs THEY have.
Oh, good for you, you made a law stating that you don't have to recognize gay marriages without doing anything to protect MY freedom of association when it comes to the many legal forms of marriage in this country that MY Faith finds blasphemous.
They spend all their time fighting so they don't have to freely associate with the gays when it comes to marriage (which is fine) but I don't see them passing laws to protect people of my faith from servicing divorcees seeking remarriage.
It's rather hard to support their selective free association laws knowing that those laws will never go further than protecting Evangelical Christians...
I feel ya. Probably doesn't help that I also think christianity in general, most especially the evangelical variety, is overall a very harmful belief system with few redeeming qualities.
And the president of the US is supposed to do what about assaults in Germany?
And (despite much of the left apparently wanting to ignore it) sexual assault is hardly a specifically SoCon issue.
And the president of the US is supposed to do what about assaults in Germany?
Apparently we're supposed to nuke ISIS and stop allowing moose-limbs into the country or something.
Actually, I'm trying to think when sexual assault has ever been a socon issue.
When Bill did it
"And the president of the US is supposed to do what about assaults in Germany?"
He can try to avoid a simiilar situation here.
Uh, yeah. I'd say American voters shouldn't be politically concerned with incidents of sexual assault in /another country/. Unless the assailants were our troops, it really shouldn't be our business. Let the Colognese sort out their groper problem.
I know right, we should do away with that whole right to associate thing. It's so two centuries ago. Or how about those property rights, we don't need those either. Or religious freedom, I heard God was dead, so maybe we can get the IRS and the DOJ to start bonfires with all of those stupid Christian folk, right?
You can't start bonfires with Christians. They make terrible kindling. You start the bonfires with Bibles and once they get going you throw on the Christians.
"Cold is God's way of telling us to burn more Catholics!"

Don't give Block Yomomma any ideas! Ah who am I kidding, he already fantasizes about this every day.
You know what it's about, come on, you know you want say it...imaginary sky father...
Do they really not realize that Trump is pro-gay marriage and pro-choice? Social conservatives have nobody to vote for in this election.
Trump is pro-gay marriage and pro-choice
"Before he was against it..."
He claims to have converted, but I doubt his sincerity for some reason.
Once you learn to fake sincerity, you've got it made.
That would make a great title for his next auto-biography.
"Fake It 'til You Make It!"
It is entirely reasonable to be pro-gay marriage, and anti-gay wedding cakes provided at the point of a gun
That's where I am on the position, as should every libertarian. Gary's position on the gay cake thing is a bit disappointing, but I'll allow it because he's so much better on everything else than Trump and Clinton.
That's where I am on the position, as should every libertarian. Gary's position on the gay cake thing is a bit disappointing, but I'll allow it because he's so much better on everything else than Trump and Clinton.
Of course, we should also get over that whole dismembering of children for fun and profit. Hell, we should just go the full monty and say that if you don't produce more than you consume, you should be dismembered and ANY age and perhaps turned into little green wafers to be fed to more productive members. NOTHING could be more libertarian than that, right?
How's he paying for these ads to air? As a Life Member of the LP I've yet to be solicited for contributions by his
campaign.
According to Nicholas Sarwark, donations have gone through the roof. Don't know what the source/s are.
I have, and I'm new.
Long-time libertarian. At least one email round of solicitations went out earlier this week (6/27).
If the donations are up, then they are putting the money to good use. This video is highly effective, and -- as a member of the choir -- the combination of Johnson's "you in?" and Weld's "come on" at the end is awesome.
(The nitpicky grammarian in me isn't sure there should be a comma before "yet" at the end.)
certainly a good ad, but hardly as iconic as Daisy or Snoopy...
Nice. Johnson/Weld cause what the hell
What have I smelled? It's Johnson/Weld!
"Thank you, Jimmy, I'll give you a B for creativity and raise it to an A if you get back in your seat and shut up."
This re-Pulse-blican infiltrator is gonna be among the first dealt with when even-lambs-have-teeth Whutzername is sworn in. I'm laying 7 to 2 odds it's BFF 1, Jesus 0, just like in Texas.
Won't play on my browser here at work. But I'm glad they are putting out something effective. Any idea where it will run?
It's not bad considering this is the level of discourse of your competition.
It's ok. If they want to attract millenial voters they need to sex it up a bit. Maybe the McAfee video production team is available?
Maybe they could get HM to edit in some twerk video.
That was a great ad, right up to the WTF moment of focusing on a federal government built space shuttle.
They want to really sex up their ads, they need an actually sexy (preferably non-white) girl to play Obama Girl for them.
Or a Johnson Guy for Teh Gaze.
I hear Big Dick Johnson is available.
Or perhaps Big Jim Slade.
"Or a Johnson Guy for Teh Gaze"
I've been told from my appearance I have a chance at capturing the "Bear" vote...
McAfee's creative team are thieves.
Term limits are stupid. Will only create new problems. I mean it's fine if states want to experiment with them but mostly it will cause chaos. Also GJ's affect is strange. It's almost like he doesn't believe what's coming out of his mouth. Also it's hard to imagine him vetoing a bill. "But will you still like me if I strike down this thing you worked so hard at?"
"Also it's hard to imagine him vetoing a bill."
you don't have to imagine it. you can look at his record. say what you will about gj, he was certainly Mr Veto.
OK and you can watch his performance at any interview or town hall. He will bend over backwards to try to make people like him and try to avoid hurting anyone's feelings. It's a real paradox and while I see your point, I need to understand better what the hell is going on here.
Vetoing the fuck out of bad legislation is Johnson bending over backwards to avoid actually hurting the voters. The legislators who get butthurt over that are a tiiiiiiiiiiny proportion of the populace.
So GJ is a principled Utilitarian? Oh ok.
Not sure how you got "utilitarian" out of that comment about Johnson not being afraid to veto bad legislation despite being nice to anyone he interacts with in person.
"You in?" "Spread it around." "Johnson."
I don't like where this is going.
"You in?'
"Just enough to win, Darlin'."
If you have to ask...
Just the tip.
I like the way they emphasized the word "honest" in green.
Suck it, Hillary.
Same here. I thought it was the most effective part of the ad.
Unfortunately, "not saying whatever random statist shit the people currently in front of you believe" lacks brevity.
And niceness.
Clintrump will do the heavy lifting there.
Was that somebody's nephew on the synthesizer?
Lose that background noise; I turned off the sound and then the ad.
Shitty music and not enough bitching and moaning about flight delays.
F-
Conspicuous absent was the fact that they want to murder all young people with heroin.
wow. you are messed up.
Duh.
You're obviously new here. Crusty is staunchly pro murdering-all-young-people-with-heroin, it is known.
I did not even spell conspicuously correctly.
You didn't need to point it out, because it was.
I thought Crusty was staunchly pro-sending kids to work in the monocle mines.
Crusty is a mass of contradictions. And teratomas.
The ones that survive the mines should be forced to ingest massive amounts of heroin. Duh.
And then eaten.
The 'Foie Gras' method of heroin induction is the only way to fly.
The 'Foie Gras' method of heroin induction is the only way to fly!
How about the Squirrel Method?
It's like the same principle as keeping around chickens until they stop laying eggs, than eating 'em. Extract all the value you can before scrapping the orphans for parts!!
Cyanide, ammonium nitrate and arsenic are legal in These States. When was the last time you tried to buy some? Republican prohibitionists come up with the most idiotic comebacks.
I forwarded it to everyone I know and they love it. A few more of these will get them in the debates.
Post it on Facebook if you want to have your friends-list cut by 2/3ds.
Really?!
*eagerly posts on Derpbook*
I already did that by speaking out about why I am for the right to self defense. If someone wants to unfriend me because they disagree with my political thoughts, fuck em.
Actually, someone who I assumed was a full-on prog posted it on mine and said she had to learn more about them.
I commented, and actually got very little pushback or outrage. Maybe the times they are a changin'.
"Is This Gary Johnson/Bill Weld Spot the Greatest Presidential Ad Ever?"
No. What the fuck is this, Buzzfeed?
It was a good ad. I hope it gets noticed. That is as far as anyone should go here.
Sarcasm? How does it work?
It's okay. A bit long. GayJay's speaking affections are strange. Weld is much better.
"Is This Gary Johnson/Bill Weld Spot the Greatest Presidential Ad Ever?
LBJ's Daisy, Nixon's "Crime," Dukakis' "Snoopy" tank ride, you've got competition."
Goodness, how far up Johnson's ass is Reason? A long buzzfeed-style talking head video competes with entertainment?
SO...
Reason supports Trump. /Buttplug
Reason supports Hillary. /yokels
Reason supports Libertarian candidate?
Christ, I hope so.
Careful, the FEC might come after Reason for their coverage of Johnson as a campaign contribution!
No, really....
Last election everybody was complaining about how Reason wasn't saying enough about Johnson. Maybe this is Reason's version of "fair and balanced." You just have to wait long enough.
Gary, though a clueless impostor, is preferable to the whack job impostors he ran against. Voting ain't all bad. And spare a thought for the voters. They can have yet another asset-forfeiture crash and be jailed if the GO Pee urinalysis prohibitionists get elected, or their girlfriends can have some individual rights if the other looters get elected. No matter which gang of looters steals more votes, WE win with a bumper crop of spoiler votes with which to legalize freedom!
One can support without fawning over an ad, no?
Masterful? Powerful x 2?
Um ... no, pretty pedestrian. Not terrible or anything. Just kind of ... meh.
This is a good ad. Not like that garbage McAfee came out with a month or so ago.
*blocks*
McAfee's would've been great had it not been a total rip off of Apple.
At least the noob's vids mentioned the LP, and he has a much nicer voice.
LBJ's Daisy, Nixon's "Crime," Dukakis' "Snoopy" tank ride,
What's Willie Horton, chopped liver?
Decent ad. Needs more unflattering black-and-white photos of opposition candidates with ominous music.
Exactly.
I liked the eye roll.
No offence Gary, but I'm writing in Wyatt Scott simply because his ad is the Chuck Norris of ads.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DG6fhub9HDQ
Apparently I'm in the minority here because I thought that ad would be terribly confusing to anyone unfamiliar with Gary Johnson. Like, it appears as though they are running as a gay couple for president.
You forgot to add "NTTAWWT"
"it appears as though they are running as a gay couple for president."
Well we've clinched the gay vote!!
Time for some Clinton-style Libertarian politics!!
If you don't vote for the FABULOUS power couple of Johnson/Weld, that's just more proof of your casual homophobia and intolerance!! Check your privilege, cishet shitlords!!
Weld is the bottom of the ticket, but Johnson's the bottom of the relationship.
This is precisely why the looter Suprema Corte took gay baiting off the table (hence out of the GOP platform). As it is, gay baiting, Jezebel raping, separate-but-equal water fountains & restrooms and the death sentence for hippies all got moved over to the Tea, Prohi and Constatoochun party platforms. I'm gonna MISS those guys!
They are the only plausible candidates still in the running today.
That said, the ad is lame. "it's easy". Sure Bill. What have you been doing for the last 20 years?
Just more rhetoric about the outcomes they promise to achieve sans substance.
Too much talking heads. With the sound off, the ad tells me very little.
Great political ads appeal to emotions. Should have started with Trump mocking a disabled reporter and Clinton smirking on the stage with Warren. Set people up by having someone complaining "if only we had a better choice", then quickly explain that we do. Don't even have Johnson speak. Tout his record as a governor and business owner, then show some inspiring picture of him from Mt. Everest.
Many voters won't know what to make of Clinton/Warren. The Clinton take should be:
Cut 1: Hillary cackles, "We came ... We saw ... He died".
Cut 2: Gruesome photographs of Qaddafi's corpse and Libyan victims with voiceover of Hillary's laughter.
Cut 3: Hillary cackles, "Libya is an example of smart power at its best."
Cut 4: Hillary cackles, "The Libyan people voted for the first time since 1951, and they voted for moderates."
Cut 5: Ominous clips of ISIS control of Libya and genocide in Mali, with ominous voiceover.
Cut 6: Clinton's smirk with voiceover: "Just one example from an undeniable history of scandal, poor judgment, and deception ... and its consequences."
So, a Libertarian who boasts of building new government bridges, highways, schools, and hospitals gives new meaning to the word "Libertarian" - the sound that you don't hear is all of the noise that exists in a vacuum - which is just how much the term 'Libertarian' contains meaningful speech - which is to say, that it empties the term of meaning - you know, the new soft, squishy 'Libertarians' that are indistinguishable from Republicans, except that they no longer wish to defend the country, but do want you smoking pot (but nothing worse - finger wag, finger-wag).
You have to be kidding, Libertarians have reached the point where you can no longer tell them from the other guys? Well, that is a new low, which is what you get when the only Libertarian defining principle - the non-initiation of force - is abandoned. But what the heck, when you have no philosophical underpinning, that is exactly what is left: nothing you can hold on to; no principles. Libertarians get electable by becoming that which they have despised - brilliant.
It's sad, but let's hope Johnson gets elected over Trump and Clinton. Then we can start a new pro-freedom party.
Nobody has commented on it yet, much less objected, but you'll notice neither the WORD libertarian nor the party name appears in the commercial - so I guess you can't complain they're tarnishing the brand. The don't even mention the brand. Now THAT'S advertising!
OK, I have your answer.
No, not even a zero.
I thought it was pretty good. But then I ran it by the wife. She should be right in the target demographic. Former progressive, married to a libertarian, disillusioned with everybody, hates Hillary, hates, hates, hates Trump.
She made it about 12 seconds into the video before scoffing. She kinda paid sorta attention for another 12 seconds..... and said "nobody knows who these people are".
The "it was easy" line by Weld made her laugh. Not in a good way.
I don't think she got any of the content at all. She was checked out pretty completely before half-way through. She was visibly casting about for anything else to look at, long before it ended.
After a moment's reflection she asked, "Why are they just coming out now? Why didn't they start a long time ago?"
Now, mind you she lives in the same house with me, and hears me mention this stuff rather frequently. So Johnson is very forgettable.
So your target audience is probably 80% hostile to even hearing your message. If it isn't on the Today show being presented as Truth by Matt Lauer (or equivalent), it doesn't exist for the vast majority.
You can take it to the bank. The "wife-o-meter" has been infallible on things of popular interest. She thinks very much like the average voter thinks. It may not be rational, or even remotely coherent. But it does get to pick the next president.
So, no. Not a game changer. Choir preaching.
So Johnson is very forgettable.
This times a million. The harsh truth is that although he's clearly in good physical shape and health, he's not very conventionally good-looking, and to make it even worse he has zero charisma, zero confidence, and he sucks at the retail stuff like selling himself and cracking jokes and telling stories.
None of this should matter, but of course it matters a ton in the age of image. No woman who isn't already a true believer libertarian is ever going to be excited, turned on, or even interested in this guy. He's a more WASP-y version of Woody Allen or George Costanza.
Doesn't it make you wonder how he was elected the NM governor in the first place? or how he created a very successful business?
Yes. When I listen to him I'm somewhat amazed that he ever got elected to anything.
The appearance thing is apparently quite important. Ted Cruz instantly gave my wife the creeps. She never bothered to listen to a word he said. Just "creepy".
She did something similar with Johnson. "Who's that". End of engagement. Never had a chance after that 1 second evaluation.
Ostensibly he should have won her on that spot. He mentions pro-choice, gay marriage, ending stupid wars.... all hot-button issues for her. I don't think she could tell me what he said on any of those topics.
She is the embodiment of how people writ large make decisions. We wonks are the exception. They "take the measure of the man". Reagan was better than Carter. Bush was better than dorky Dukakkis. Clinton was better than Bush. Etc. People are weak little animals ruled by their instincts, not their rational minds.
Johnson needs to pull something else out (of the hat). And he needs to expose it nationally. I don't think viral campaigning is going to do much, unless he can come up with a better spot than this. Something people want to watch for the sake of watching it, not for the politics.
You know, something Trump would have done. I still claim he's far and away the biggest idiot in the history of politics. But he did manage to get more TV time than everyone else put together over the last 12 months without spending any money at all.
Gary needs a great advertisement (think superbowl) and a 30 million dollar buy, just to get started.
Dude, sounds like you don't have the highest opinion of your wife.
She doesn't think the way I do. I'm not in the mainstream on this. She is.
She is my barometer. Because otherwise I would have said that an ad that appeals to the disaffected on Team D (pro-life, pro gay rights, pro pot) and Team R (cutting spending, cutting taxes, vetoing spending bills) would be spot on in this election. On first listen, I thought that ad was a stone-cold winner that could change hearts and minds.
I also said, loudly and confidently, "Nobody is going to cast a vote for Trump" this time last year. She was worried about it and thought he could win the nomination. She was right. I couldn't have been more wrong. (It still hurts me to think that there are people who would vote for him - and I don't even buy any of the left's demonization of him)
I think my analysis is spot on - undercutting team D and R at the base should work in a year where both parties nominated the anti-candidate.
But my wife understands people. She thinks the way they think. She gets it. She's pretty sure we libertarian folk are a bunch of weirdos who nobody is going to pay attention to. She's always right about these things.
The problem with libertarians getting into the mainstream is that you are fundamentally myopic. You view the world through a certain lens, and outside of that lens, the world doesn't make any sense to you.
taxation is theft. (except for when it pays for things we want - like police (please disregard what you want taxes to pay for... cause that's theft))
--
The reality is - and somewhat bewildering to me how libertarians don't understand this - is the fact that you disenfranchise nearly every demographic. Your extreme left/right ideas don't appeal to centrists. Your extreme right ideas don't appeal to liberals, and your extreme left ideas don't appeal to conservatives.
To sound slightly more intelligent than repubs you pay the price of disenfranchising everyone.
Oh and by the way - any real progressive who's done his homework, and isn't just progressive because of gays and drugs... wouldn't touch your party with a ten foot pole... Your failed economic policies don't appeal to progressives who have actually studied history - and know that socialism did what free capitalism never could - built the greatest economy in the world.
A libertarian is simply someone who's seen through the '2 party system' - but has never bothered to actually pick up a history book, or evaluate their positions downfalls with any honesty or sincerity. I would know... i used to be a libertarian.

Did you see him on Samantha Bee? He totally played along and was really goofy -- almost to a fault.
So for whom, if anyone will your wife vote? After all you wrote she hates Hillary and Trump. Does she even care to learn who Johnson/Weld are? Or is she happy to vote for those she hates?
The wife-o-meter's popular interests, don't appear to be popular with her, or the country either.
There's still 5 months before the election for people to learn about Johnson/Weld, and how they compare to the establishment.
Squirrels ate the long version. #comment_6232723
Dangit.
Short version:
I ran your ad by the wife, who represents the American voting everyman very well.
Not only is it not the greatest ever, it is completely ineffective. She didn't make it all the way through, was kinda annoyed, kinda amused (at them, not with them). "It was easy" made her laugh out loud, not in a good way.
So your objective was not met. Sorry guys, it turns out this was just choir preaching.
Ok, they un-ate it. Whatever. Crazy squirrels.
Squirrel Regurgitation? Eeeeewwwwww!!!!!!!
I haven't seen the ad. I'll look at it when I'm able to view it on my own machine. This one has the equivalent of a stroke when confronted with the awful Shockwave Flash. -Kevin R
I'm not sure that it's the "greatest presidential ad ever," but it is definitely the best Libertarian Party ad I've ever seen. The only thing I didn't particularly care for was the background music.
Nice, but hardly as memorial as the Daisy ad out Dukakis looking like a little kid in that helmet
From the Ad...
What exactly, are the "11 industrialized states"?
He was probably too polite to say "rust belt." 😉
This is absolutely terrible.
Near 40 million Americans,15%, of voting age are hearing impaired and Gary Johnson doesn't consider them worth captioning his ads.
This might persuade my step-mother (who is a Ron Paul fan), but not my father, who is so obsessed with Islamophobia he's convinced that the few score Muslims at the nearby community college are planning to blow up the local shopping mall. Personally, I gave up voting a long time ago.

Out of our pocketbooks, and bedrooms, but no mention of our bathrooms.
It literally brought tears of hope to my eyes! Maybe it'll end in tears but yeah, I'm in!
An excellent ad that actually contains real content! My only quibble is the content-free position "intelligent immigration reform" -- this can mean almost anything to different people.
I thought the same. It's like when Democrats say "A majority of Americans support immigration reform!!", when half of those people consider building a wall immigration reform and half of them consider having no border at all immigration reform.
Yep. Almost as vague and stupid as "common sense gun reform"
The music is too loud. FFS dial it back a bit. Otherwise The Johnson looks better than he has in years. And though it pains me to say so, Weld is an asset to the ticket.
Where do I go to contribute for only airing this particular ad more often; more places?
Never wear pure white or pure black on video.
It really is a darn fine campaign commercial.
Ok, one more thing on this...
What's stopping the LP campaign from buying filler slots from the national cable systems? For say, $40k per day they could hit 30 second spots all over the dial and all around the clock - in all those spots where you see crazy products sold for $19.95. They wouldn't get any prime-time love, but lots of daytime TV (moms and seniors!) and lots of late night (crazy people and college kids!).
Somebody hand these guys $30 million so they can run out and get some name recognition this summer.
Ok, idea number two - get that cash, run the ads - and put in a bunch of TeamGov swag for sale. End the ad with an 800 number.
From my experience in direct marketing, people call the 800 number. Not incredible numbers of people, but people call. They might not even understand the ad, and they still call in. You might be able to come up with 100k people calling in this summer with a decently designed ad. Sell 10% of them some swag, and you might have something going. A really good ad might bump those numbers up by 100x.
C'mon Koch bro's! $30 million might get TeamGov on the debate stage! Go big, or go home, I say!
IS THERE A LINK SO I CAN PUT THIS ON FACEBOOK/LI/ETC?
Ok so... I get it. This is "reason.com" and it's Editor in Chief Nick Gillespie probably cums in his pants anytime a libertarian presidential candidate does anything remotely decent on the campaign trail. But in all candor and honesty -- No, Nick, this advertisement is NOT in the pantheon of LBJ's Daisy ad. The Daisy ad was literally 50 years ago. Fifty years from TODAY this Governor Johnson/Weld ad won't be remembered as the iconic ad as the Daisy ad still is.
Vote Libertarian. Have at it. Promote the ticket all you want. But claiming this ad is in the same class as the Daisy ad is like claiming Johnson is in the same class as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Mahatma Gandhi combined. It just isn't so.
Are you implying Lincoln was a good president? Or he was some first rate president? I wish the legend/myth of Lincoln would fucking die. Also I vote for the person who is going to uphold my moral and values and not the person whom has a chance of winning for then I will always lose.
this doesn't make me afraid of anything. therefore it's ineffective.
I like it -- especially the positive, optimistic tone. It's such a contrast to both Trump and Hillary.
No, it's NOT the "greatest presidential ad ever"! Not even remotely close. It's boring, only marginally libertarian, and it's even pretty amateur on a technical level. There are awkward, clearly audible musical crossfades used to shorten the length of the boring, generic background music, the cinematography is mediocre, and the editing should have been MUCH snappier.
The old Ron Paul "imagine" video with the kinetic typography is so much better than this video it isn't even funny. Johnson and Weld are better than Trump or Hillary, sure, but acting like this is some kind of amazing, energizing libertarian ad is ridiculous. Go watch this old Ron Paul ad again and see if you REALLY feel like this utterly generic video is truly "the best ever" still:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKfuS6gfxPY
I agree with you on this. And the video you linked to is certainly a better political ad.
I am often surprised at the lack of creativity and production abilities available to our candidates; this nowadays is really not an expensive proposition, it only takes talent, imagination, translated passion and creativity.
There is a lot of it around, GJ and BW just have to look to find it.
Here's a link to the video on YouTube:

To whoever is managing the LP and Gary Johnson websites and YouTube channels, how about putting it there too?
FYI,

I'm not an American but if I were I'd vote for these fellers without a doubt. Personable, intelligent, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, with excellent publicists and a positive message. What's not to like?
So a day goes by. And they have not reached 4k retweets.
That's not gonna cut it. Not even if it was 100x as big. Kanye West gets more likes for pictures of his new shoes, and that guy is functionally retarded. This is depressing.
I am afraid GJ is a dud ...
I was thinking about spending $25 on one of those lawn signs, and now I probably won't

That video was terrible.
They need to inject a strong does of persuasion in to their message.
Word on the street this guy is selling the pure stuff : @ScottAdamsSays
@1:29 - Gary looks stoned. LOL
Liked the spot.
They're still mostly preaching to the choir. Clinton is also pro choice and pro gay marriage. They haven't made any efforts to distinguish themselves from the front runner.
They threw the obligatory support on "small, efficient government" but didn't mention any spending cuts. They didn't bring up free trade, religious liberty, 2A, or Obama's foreign adventures. They meticulously avoided libertarian values that might be displeasing to the electorate.
I suppose its smart for GJ run as (for all intents and purposes) a moderate democrat, considering that registered democrats vastly outnumber republicans. But he can't play that game forever. On that debate stage Clinton (or Trump) will try to paint him as a "cut everything republican" and manic deregulator. If Johnson says "I want balanced trade too" or "My running mate was a gun control guy you know" He's going to depress NeverTrumpers.
No question. I like them both better than Trump and Clinton combined. You could even throw in slavery, genocide and Hitler on the Trump-Clinto side and I would still like these guys better.
OK, maybe saying I like them better than Trump or Clinton is damning them with faint praise.
I'm a Republican, but I won't be voting GOP in the Presidential race. My family will vote LP in that race in November.
This ad inspired my wife and I to cut a significant check to the Johnson/Weld ticket. And I HATE giving money to politicians.
Gary, is that you?!
No mention of an individual's right to self defense.
But,
Strong endorsement for women wanting to off their babies...
Should do very well.
Saying that this is "hands down powerful, powerful stuff" is pretty weak. Didn't Nick see Johnson and Weld on that CNN TownHall thing? Did he not hear how Johnson/Weld spoke of Clinton as if they'd both boned her at one time or another? Johnson should do himself - and Libertarians - a favor and start smoking weed again. He's lost his way...
I agree that this is not only the best LP POTUS campaign ad I've ever seen (since 1980!), but one of the best POTUS campaign ads I have ever seen, period. Keep making history, Johnson/Weld team!
That said, two things about the ad start my Spidey-sense tingling:
1) Why no mention of the Libertarian Party? Since the campaign is a long-shot, no matter how good our opportunity may be this year, it is at least as important to establish the LP brand as it is to establish awareness of the Johnson/Weld ticket.
2) Weld wants government that treats the American people more "like family ... than cattle." Sounds great -- certainly an improvement over our longstanding, miserable situation. But any Libertarian knows that government is not my Mommy or Daddy, and neither should it be my rich uncle nor my Big Brother! I hope Weld will someday soon modify his position to say something like he wants government to treat Americans as EMPLOYERS, rather than subjects. I'll run my own life, thank you, no paternalism needed. I want our government to be the properly respectful public servant that our Constitutional authors originally designed it to be. I'm cutting newbie LP-member Weld some slack because he was a governor, and State governments are always a bit closer to the citizen and "more familial" in stance than the Federal government ever should try to be. But the sooner we quit seeing government at ANY level through the lens of the family metaphor, the better, imnsho.
Keep this coming.
before I saw the bank draft which had said $9426 , I didnt believe that...my... brother woz like actualy earning money part-time at there labtop. . there uncles cousin has done this 4 less than fifteen months and by now repaid the dept on there place and got a great new Mini Cooper . read the full info here ...

If you're gonna vote for Johnson/Weld you're a GOPe dupe, not a libertarian. Worst LP ticket ever.
I would be ALL IN if your position on abortion and marriage was different.
Didn't Gary come out praising Hillary a bit back?
Best political ad? No. A standard ad, I think your bias towards these candidates is overtaking your senses. I like what they say (in theory) but to say the ad itself is good is kind be of silly. It's click bait that makes me less likely to click on a Reason link next time I see it.
No, sorry, but the Libertarians are not the solution, either. And let me tell you why. They act like ISIS doesn't exist; that Obama has not spent the last 7 years helping to blow up the Middle East; that Russian has not been emboldened by our incompetent, distracted president; China doesn't think it owns the China Sea.
These guys are probably super at cutting budgets and I love the no taxes part, for sure. But they don't instill confidence in protecting the Homeland.
Johnson/Weld seem like amiable men, who definitely know what's wrong in America - but no one man can fix everything. But I've actually thought about not voting AT ALL this election because though I am a Dem, I do not like Hillary (and a lot of that goes way back to Bill). I am in 100% agreement that America needs to get out of the business of war and bring that money back home where it's needed. Oh yeah - and let's topple the 1% while we're at it and bring ALL Americans into the middle. I am so seriously thinking of voting Johnson - if he has a shot, he definitely cannot be worse than Trump (the stuff of nightmares) and Billary (Yikes!) I'd rather give Johnson 4 years than either of them.
As a long term registered Libertarian, I'm really torn. I simply cannot do anything that might help Hillary become elected, and so reluctantly must vote for the other candidate.
The Libertarian Party ought to be championing some form of Preferential Voting ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preferential_voting ) to accommodate voters like me. Without it, the two major parties will continue their stranglehold on government.
PS - Agreed. The first time I saw this ad I pronounced it the best I'd seen in a long, long time.
pretty darn good. however, this is the greatest campaign ad ever:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rZdAB4V_j8
LBJ's Daisy, Nixon's "Crime," Dukakis' "Snoopy" tank ride, you've got competition
Cut out the background music so we can hear what they are saying.
Making funny faces doesn't make an ad great. Neither do two meh candidates who couldn't win a nomination from a real party. These guys are going to lose pretty big. whether they take away from Hillary or Trump, it makes no difference, but they're probably going to help whoever wins, which is the point. Either Trump or Hillary is going to win. A vote for anyone else is a vote for the winner.

When do you start covering the LP candidates like you cover Trump and Hill?
good job
http://www.xenderforpcfreedownload.com/ thanks admin good post
No, that's too dirty.
You may want to get your sarcasm meter recalibrated.
A definition is coming, I can just tell...
In You'reup, every bomb throwing communist anarchist swears they're libertarian and have been since 1971. Venezuelans actually call the Chavez regime "libertariano" interspersed with other adjectives. Libertarians are the party and write the platform (most of it, anyway), and thinking voters create the spoiler votes we use to repeal moronic laws and cut taxes. This ain't complicated. The commies saddled us with an income tax straight out or the Manifesto penned in German, and they NEVER got 2% of the vote even when communism didn't mean gulags, firing squads, skeletal cadavers, warfare and cavity searches.
