Democrats: We Will Overcome the Constitution

Democrats use civil rights era tactics to curtain civil rights

|

Nothing stirs the passions of Democrats these days quite like the prospect of gutting the Constitution. In an unprecedented act of pretend political bravery, House members held a catered sit-in, demanding that Republicans allow a vote to strip away protections of Second, Fifth and Sixth Amendments of the Constitution. It was quite the scene.

There were the selfie-happy Democrats singing "We Shall Overcome" while demanding passage of a bill that those right-wing nutjobs over at the American Civil Liberties Union have "strongly" argued would undermine civil liberties. As of this writing, no participant has been beaten down by the cops or thrown into a dank cell, although iPhones were probably getting perilously low on juice for those who'd forgotten their chargers.

Sit strong, heroes!

The message was clear, though. If we recklessly cling to the presumption of innocence, the terrorists have already won. If we fail to let bureaucrats create extrajudicial secret government lists that deny Americans their right to due process, we are, in essence, selling ISIS weapons of mass destruction.

Civil rights-era heroes like Rep. John Lewis, who lent his considerable legacy to this vacuous grandstanding, was once on the terror watch list himself. He didn't know how he got on it. He didn't know how to get off of it. Yet, today he believes this Kafkaesque system is a sound way to deny his fellow citizens their rights.

This is the Democratic Party of 2016. Engaging in emotional blackmail and demagoguery, and waving pictures of the victims of Islamic terrorism to push an unrelated bill that would not have saved a single one of those lives and will never pass, all the while lying about guns. Lying about the laws that govern guns and refusing to vote for, or even discuss, a compromise measure Republicans forwarded in the Senate. It's been far more important to gin up anger and moral outrage for political gain.

Don't get me wrong. I hope Democrats dig deep and find the steely resolve to disrupt all of Washington D.C.'s business until they are given a vote—for weeks or months, if necessary. Shut it all down. It won't be easy. I mean, it's going to take some serious courage to support a measure with support polling in the high 80s. But anything less is a moral capitulation to the nefarious National Rifle Association.

Although there are principled progressives who oppose these efforts, it is worth mentioning that many of the same liberals who claim that the filibuster—conducted within the norms of the Senate—is unhinged obstructionism celebrate Democrats themselves. When a shutdown looms because of the GOP, we are bombarded with stories about a broken political system. This event, rest assured, will be treated quite differently. As inane as it is, it will be framed as a "historic" moment that may/could/did change everything in the fight against gun violence. It has already started.

Well, it's definitely a histrionic moment. When House Speaker Paul Ryan tried to gavel the body into session the first time, he was shouted down by chants of "Shame, shame, shame" and "No bill, no break" (Remember that national discussion on civility?), and drowned out by rising applause from a bunch of people who are perpetually searching for their '60s moment.

Rep. Sandy Levin, D-Mich., claimed that "this may turn out to be a Selma-like moment relating to gun violence in the United States of America."

Ah, the "Selma" envy moment. The entire day was drenched in that kind of sanctimony. In an interview with MSNBC, Rep. Seth Moulton asked, "Were the civil rights organizers just breaking rules and getting publicity?" No. Now, Moulton says a lot of purposefully misleading things about guns in an attempt to scare Americans who don't know any better. It takes a special kind of duplicity, though, to anoint oneself a defender of civil liberties while pushing an authoritarian measure that would deny millions of Americans some of their most basic constitutional rights.

  2. First they came for people who wanted their high-capacity semi-automatic weapon to fire more than 100 bullets a min, then they came for people who wanted to load their handguns with more than 15 bullets, then they came for people who flew to Syria to fight for Isis and want to now buy an AR-15. When will they come for me, I wonder.

    1. Yeah, name one time secret lists have ever been used to harm socialists!

Seriously, it’s idiots like you that deserve a President Trump.

      1. or President Clinton.

        1. You say to-may-to; I say one of those heirloom tomato varieties that come in orange.

      2. name one time secret lists have ever been used to harm socialists!

Right, socialists are usually the ones who make the lists. Figures that commie boy would be all for it.

      3. Actually, socialists have often used their secret lists to pick out other socialists (generally of slightly differing flavors of collectivist totalitarian insanity) to send to the gulags.

        -jcr

        1. They’re the first ones who are going to cause problems when things don’t work out quite like they’d hoped (they never do). The socialist solution is simple: use them first and then, once you’ve installed the government you wanted that you built on their backs, send them off to the gulags. Useful idiots are still idiots.

        2. This is the part where I reference the Night of Long Knives, and how this guy should probably go and read a Wiki article on it or something.

    2. May you end up on a watchlist.

      1. He thinks that sort of thing will never be turned against him. Because he really is that stupid.

        1. Well, we should cut him some slack. He is, after all, retarded.

          1. It’s all about the cake for amsoc.

            1. GayJay lieks the natsoc cake

            2. The cake is a lie!

        2. They always think that. When inevitably proved wrong, they give us the most delicious tears.

          1. Look, a few more weeks and Maduro will have Venezuela running like a well oiled machine !1!!!1

            -Proggie

        3. They all think they will be running the gulags, and are always shocked when they find themselves inmates.

      2. That has got to be their world’s worst fortune cookie.

    3. Need a citation on the 100 rounds a minute (Jerry Miculek videos don’t count, he’s not human).

      1. http://www.military-today.com/firearms/m16.htm

The M16 rate of fire is 650-750 rounds per minute. That number represents the cyclic rate, not a realistic number of rounds either any person or the gun itself could actually fire in one minute.

        1. They really should give the time between firing two consecutive rounds along with the number of rounds that can be fired in a single burst.

Just like they should give gallons per 100 miles instead of miles per gallon.

        2. And we second class citizens can’t buy M-16s anyway, so cyclic rate is somewhere beyond theoretical in any discussion of civilian purchase.

        3. AR-15s (Or the Sig .223 rifles, etc.) do not have a happy switch, therefore cannot go cyclic.

They are all one pull, one shot only.

          1. Yep when the gun grabbing fuckers say shit like “automatic weapons like the AR15 should be banned”. I automatically convert the word automatic to the word semiautomatic to correct for their stupidity.

The next thing I think is “no way in hell will they ever get my semi auto guns…”

            1. Better we ban progressives.

      2. If you get a beta-mag and maintain it properly, you can put 100 rounds down the pipe pretty quick. Luckily the Aurora theater shooter had the first part and not the second. #highcapmagssavelives

    4. Please tell me what commercially available guns can fire 100 bullets a minutes. Since you are a fire arms expert.

I’ve seen a few videos where some rednecks modify their rifles to go full auto, and the barrels tend to melt down after around the 90 bullet mark. But please tell me about all the magical guns that can fire 100 rounds per minute. Oh wise one, since I’m sure everybody would love to buy a gun that can fire 100 rounds per minute.

      1. The black scary kind, with the shoulder thing that goes up.

        1. Pistol grips!

          1. ..and flash suppressors.

            -jcr

            1. You forgot the bayonet lug. That makes them extra scary, because you know, who in their right mind needs a bayonet lug?

              1. Or the barrel shroud. Who needs to shroud their gun and hide it?

(I know that’s not what one is for… but DiFi insinuated as much once IIRC).

            2. Don’t forget the grenade launcher yoose guyse!

        2. Yeah the ones that kick so hard they give you PTSD.

Damn the son of a bitch who wrote that article was a fucking pussy.

      2. 100 rounds a minute isn’t very fast. I can maintain that rate of fire with a 5-shot revolver without too much trouble.

        1. You can reload 19 times in less than a minute? Once every three seconds?

          That’s really impressive.

      3. Please tell me what commercially available guns can fire 100 bullets a minutes.

Doesn’t matter. I’m tired of compromising with people who want to take away my actual, real rights because of theoretical, potential crimes I could possibly commit. The line is “shall not be infringed”, not “may sometimes be infringed”, or “can be infringed if you are uncomfortable with ‘gun culture'”. And yes, I should be able to buy a goddamn howitzer, or a railgun, or a frickin’ laser if I so choose because I’m a human being, Constitution be damned.

And if you think that’s crazy or extreme, then you know what I think when people explain how when I take someone’s money using the threat of force it’s called robbery and is bad, but when the government does it it’s called taxation and is a civic duty.

        1. I want the Iron Man armor.

        2. I think the limitation should be “what is normally used by one man”. No going Rambo with an M-60 medium machine gun (you generally need a scond man to help feed the ammunition belt, or it jams, or so I recall). Other than that, let cost of operation be the limiter. Ammunition costs money.

The limitation could be justified by the “bear” in “keep and bear arms”.

I woould also lime to see a law stating that agents of the Government may not bear arms denied to the common citizen, outside of designated military reservation or during transportation between same.

Chances of seeing either interpretation in my lifetime? Nil.

    5. Lie, lie, lie your way to getting what you want

    6. When will they come for me, I wonder.

If it happens a week ago, it’s still way too late.

    7. Amsoc is right, you know. Charlie Rangel deserves and needs the protection afforded by guns; we don’t.

      1. I have to assume he would be fairly well-protected inside a Federal pen.

    8. Soon, I hope. Personally, I don’t care all that much about guns. I DO care about due process. And if you don’t, I must revise my (already low) estimate of your intelligence downward.

      1. I don’t think it’s possible to revise your estimate downward enough. A colony of yeast has more intelligence than Am Soc. And yeast is more useful – you can at least use it make beer. Commie shitstain has not use or value to anyone.

        1. He has use, at least for the time being, for Top Men. He will work tirelessly to give Top Men power to put us in chains (or kill us). THEN he will be totally useless and can join us.

    9. “high-capacity semi-automatic weapon to fire more than 100 bullets a min”

      OK.

    10. When will they come for me, I wonder.

      Not soon enough.

    11. “If” anyone comes for you, it would be a good idea to be heavily armed and we’ll regulated. Freedom’s safest place….

  3. Ah, the “Selma” envy moment. The entire day was drenched in that kind of sanctimony.

Wow! ifh is right! The articles here are dripping with Sigmund Fraudian slips and EUPHEMISMS! Keep it up and you may just put the “anal” in “psychoanalyse”.

    1. sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. calm down

  4. Go Dems Go! Go full retard on gun-control and anti-civil rights.

I predict the Dems get absolutely crushed in November and don’t bring up control-control at the national level again for at least a decade.

    1. I wish. But I don’t have your optimism. They won’t stop. They never stop. They’re like a spoiled child who just never shuts up until Mommy buys him that toy. And there’s always another toy in the Leftists sights.

      1. I am so proud of our Democratic Representatives, and the Senators who supported them, with food and drink, sitting with them, even buying sleeping bags.

It was a historic statement. Anyone watching who said there’s “no difference” between Republicans and Democrats is out of their mint. Ryan looked pathetic and scared. Our Dems, singing “We Shall Overcome” led by John Lewis…unforgettable! I’m not a cryer, but I teared up.

        http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027947048

        1. I’m not a cryer, but I teared up.

“I am a pussy, and you can be one too!”

          1. “And an anti-civil rights idiot, to boot!”

        2. Yes, bravely staging a “sit-in” in a place they had a legal right to be while grandstanding against civil rights. I guess this is what passes for heroic on the left these days.

          1. Not only that, but a place where literally nobody else but Congresscritters were allowed to be. Everyone else had to watch in the gallery.

Imagine if they pulled this shit at a gun store in VA.

            1. Fucking Lewis. He’s the cocksucker that was decrying the watch list when he found out he had accidentally been put on it and he couldn’t figure out the process for being removed.

So it sucked when his civil rights might be diminished…until he realized he could use it as a sledgehammer to diminish the civil rights of his political opponents en masse by using it as a backdrop to gun confiscation.

May he get rectal cancer on his way into the wood chipper.

              1. I really hope that if Trump does get elected he puts all Congressmen, Senators, their staffs, and their security personnel on the watch list. He won’t, of course. I really doubt he cares enough about due process, constitutional rights, or rule of law to do it. Maybe if they piss him off he’ll do it just to fuck them, but I doubt that too.

            2. They’d be laughed at and if they refused to leave the police might be called to escort them out. That’s about it.

          2. That’s what has passed for heroic on the Left any time these last twenty years.

        3. I don’t understand the mindset that could be that completely in the tank for anything.

      2. …or smacks his hind end and makes him go to his room. It’s amazing how fast that works. We should try it on these tantrum throwing twits.

    2. I predict 97% of incumbents will be reelected, the Senate will stay closely divided and the presidential election will be very close.

And I predict the exact same thing will happen in four years.

And the progressives will do exactly the same things they’re doing now (try to steal our guns and diminish our rights) while the right will do exactly what they’ve done (try to go nation-build around the world).

      1. Sadly, you don’t exactly need to be Carnac the Magnificent to know this.

      2. Impressive, Sloopy!

So, how good are you at predicting commodities futures? I have been wanting to invest in coffee, wheat, pork bellies, frozen concentrated orange juice, and gold….

        1. Gold’s a pretty safe bet right now

          1. And pork bellies, always pork bellies

        2. I learned everything I know about the commodities markets by watching this instructional video.

      3. My prediction is a lot of split-ticket voting because of Trump, President Hillary has a slim majority in the Senate, GOP retains the House.

Probably the best possible outcome aside from Johnson pulling off the impossible and throwing the election to the House by preventing a majority in the Electoral College.

        1. You mean “Probably the worst possible outcome.”

Trump has given his list of SC picks and I’d wager they’re all a million times better than Hillary’s will be. Plus you will have an adversarial congress for trump regardless of who controls it. With Hillary, you will have a progressive Supreme Court demolishing individual liberty for at least a generation and you will have the worst pay-for-play scam artist that likely has at least one house in her pocket.

Fuck that shit. The best possible outcome is Hillary being indicted, Trump announcing it was all a performance art piece and dropping out and then paving the way for any sane individual to win that’s not a polarizing cretin (which probably eliminates most republicans and all democrats).

        2. Trump is a clown. He’ll bluster and bully, have no allies in Congress at all, and be amusing and ineffectual. Hillary is a well connected criminal shrew. The Democrats will work with her, the press will run cover for her, and only her ostentatious stupidity and wild incompetence will limit the damage she does.

Hold you nose and vote for the clown. We might as well go out laughing.

          1. I’m not playing the ‘lesser of two evils’ game. I’m not that short-sighted.

            1. You have to vote for what is offered. One or the other. You don’t want the Republicans to nominate another Trump, or the Democrats to nominate another Shrillary? Then get involved locally. But whe it comes to the election, you vote for the effect you want out of what has been offered. Shrillary will have allies in Congress and the Press and do a lot of damage. Trump won’t have allies either place, and thus is likely to do less. Voting fr a third party, or not voting at all may make you feel morally superior, but that is a Liberal Intellectual Radical Progressive game. They agitate for ‘solutions’ like electric cars or solar power that will not address the problem, because of the fantasy involvd and the moral supreiority it allows them.

Governments are, on the whole, evil. They are modestly better than anarchy for everyone but a few very skilld, very fit people, but they aren’t good. So voting is almos always about the lesser of evils.

      4. You left off the part about the right trying to diminish different rights.

        1. Like what?

      5. My god…

…are you the reincarnation of Nostradamus? I heard he predicted that two towers shit!

      6. If the progressives were euthanized, a lot of problems would go away. Need to get all your local veterinarians ready for some volume business.

  5. Democrats Think They Will Overcome Constitution

Well to be fair, they have actually managed to do so in a lot of areas.

    1. Sad but true from the time of Woodrow Wilson, on to FDR, and now Obozo.

  6. Rep. Sandy Levin, D-Mich., claimed that “this may turn out to be a Selma-like moment relating to gun violence in the United States of America.”

Rep. David Cicilline, D-RI, is similarly retarded misguided.

  7. I’m confused. Isn’t a U.S. House session basically a big sit-in?

    1. You spelled shit wrong.

  8. Their following in the path blazed by Wilson ,F.D.R and Truman.

  9. Now why won’t they hold a woodchipper-in?

  10. Dems,if you don’t give us more power the world will end. E.U. ,if you leave and take away our power the world will end.Same shit, different assholes.

  11. John Lewis has played the “I walked with Martin Luther King” card for the last 40 years in order to preend that anyone who opposes him is a racist. He said that Tea Partiers spat at him and called him a nigger. A $100,000 offer for proof of this went unclaimed. Lewis is no “civil rights icon”, he’s a danger to individual rights every time his lips are moving.

    1. Sadly, being a danger to individual rights is what being a civil rights icon means, these days.

Collective “rights”, privileges, tribalism, cronyism, and corruption is what “civil rights” is about now.

    2. Lewis is no “civil rights icon”

No, but he has the kind of important-sounding voice that causes people to follow him blindly, just like so many other political pied pipers in history.

  12. “The message was clear, though.”

But count on Harsanyi, as usual, to miss it. The message was to vote, period. And it’s that lack of voting that plagues a do-nothing Congress, thanks to the likes of Ryan and Reid before on the Senate. Give McConnell credit, he at least let his colleagues vote.

What are you afraid of, Harsanyi? Surely your side will win in the House vote, just like you did in the Senate. Oh that’s right, you’re afraid that the country will see you disagree with 80% of the populace.

    1. Voting to take away rights? Your ok with that? Are you ok with the Patriot act, theTSA and Homeland Security ? Your ok with taking rights you don’t like ,huh, jackass.

    2. The message was to vote, period.

So, a bill that would put every registered Democrat on the no-buy list would have satisfied their demands?

      1. Not being allowed to vote? This is the same party that denied Republicans entry into meetings of committees of which they were members.

        Remember “We won, you lost!”?

      2. I favor a bill that would put every registered democrat face down in landfills. Since democrats only believe in abortion rights, and the right to fuck each other’s assholes, this should not be a problem for them.

    3. Sorry, but if you want to control what gets voted on, you have to win more elections.

That’s the way the system works.

Don’t like it, then you can move away or something, but is is how democracy works. Quit whining and get over it.

      1. I agree completely. I hear Venezuela has a government that does everything the way Jackass wants…

    4. Huh, y’know if you’re right and 80% of the country thinks that due process is a thing of the past that would seem to indicate that they could simply go ahead and amend the constitution itself. Then you wouldn’t have to listen to people prattle on about their ‘rights’ and ‘constitution’ because it would no longer be in there.

Of course, I guess we could just continue down the path of ceding all government powers to the Executive branch instead since it’s far easier and requires no majority at all. I see no bad things coming from that down the line.

I do have a question though, is there any illiberal policy that you won’t wrap your lips around? I am genuinely curious why you even read articles here since it’s become quite clear you support no libertarian cause what-so-ever.

“The message was to vote, period.”

Poor Jack; I guess we shouldn’t expect more of him.

    6. Hey fucknuts, there was no bill to vote on. Your massahs forgot that part. If you had a fucking brain, joe, you’d be dangerous. Oh, wait…..

    7. Fuck off jackass. The proper thing to do when the proposal is to take away rights is to do nothing.

But you are such a cocksuking statist asshole that you’ll go for anything that increases the almighty state’s power.

For proof see every damned post you’ve ever made about global warming..

  15. The sit-inners got bathroom breaks and a catered meal. They should have gone hungry and been forced to piss their panties.

    1. Ryan should have cut off all services to them.

  16. You can tell it’s not gonna be a ‘Selma-like’ moment because none of the Democrats have fire hoses.

And you’ve really got to wonder at the level of Lewis–or any black activist over 60–brain damage given that a whole lot of them grew up with actual Democrats actually, happily treating them like shit–some of the same Democrats they claim to revere today.

  17. The greatest thing about the 2A? It allows us to protect the 2A.

It will be hilarious (and a horrible bloodbath) if the left ever gets their political fancy and tries to make reality conform.

  18. RE: Democrats: We Will Overcome the Constitution

Umm…the democrats (and republicans) have been doing this for decades.
The only difference is they are more open about it.
Next up, secret police, gulags and extermination camps.
    I can hardly wait!

  19. The Democratic party DID change the Constitution for the better, but only after the Liberal Party formed in 1930 with a repeal platform published in 1931. This forced the Democrats–no longer burdened by the prohibitionist ku-klux-klan–to add a repeal plank to the platform which beat the evasive Republican straddle plank.

Same thing occurred recently after the Dems, bloodied by Econazi spoiler votes, adopted that party’s planks–including government financing of birth control and abortion. That it makes sense as a public health measure–much like the subsidized vaccinations that fight epidemics, AND as a manly position in favor of the rights of individuals under the 1st and 14th Amendments to be freed of religious coercion–are just icing on the cake. Dems stood up for individual rights on one important issue in 1932 and are doing it again in 2016. I’m betting the Antichoice loses again, and Libertarians learn the value of integrity.

    1. Refresh my memory… Where in the 1st and 14th Amendments does it say that I should be forced to pay for your birth control?

    2. “-including government financing of birth control and abortion. That it makes sense as a public health measure-”

      As does ‘free’ food.
Who are you and where did you leave your brain?

      1. It’s Hank, no brain in evidence……

        1. And definitely off his meds.

    3. adopted that party’s planks–including government financing of birth control and abortion. That it makes sense as a public health measure

A sensible public health measure would be to make birth control available over the counter without prescription “like in other civilized nations”.

To keep it prescription only, resulting in hugely inflated prices, and then to force people to pay for that crap through their insurance isn’t a “sensible public health measure”, it’s simply crony capitalism: Obama is in bed with doctors, pharmaceuticals, and insurers.

And you have to be quite stupid, Hank, to buy into the idea that this kind of massive government corruption is for your own good.

    4. So in your twisted world, taking away our second amendment rights is standing up for individual rights. I do not think those words mean what you think they mean.

  23. If we recklessly cling to the presumption of innocence, the terrorists have already won.

You can only cling bitterly to the Bill of Rights these days.

  24. They lasted, what, 23 hours? ?You think they would have kept at it (or tried to…) for at least an hour per Mateen victim. ?But, it wasn’t really about the victims anyway. ?At least one of them admitted as much. ?Photo Op & Fundraiser. ?They got plenty of photos for their albums to brag on, but I haven’t heard anything on the fundraising numbers, OR where they were going either. ?Anybody else?
