Brickbat: Pay as You Go
The Texas Department of Transportation took almost $400 from Birgit Grubbs for trips on toll roads she never made. Grubbs has a TxTag account, which allows the government to automatically bill a customer's bank account or credit card for trips on toll roads. It turns out that she was being billed for trips made by cars with temporary tags from a auto dealership that were similar to her tag.

Er, aren’t libertarians in favor of toll roads?
This sounds like a troll road to me.

Er, aren’t libertarians in favor of toll roads?”
Uh, yes – why do you ask?
We are, however, *not in favor* of theft – which is the core of this Brickbat.
$400 is a small price to pay for the convenience of not using a toll road.
Finally Reason gets back to its roots.
ROADZ!!!!!
Personally, I think the TxToll outfit simply decided to Godwin poor Birgit Grubbs as an elaborate troll. Remember, all German-flavoured tags look alike.-D

They’re selling the Renault 5 cheap these days, are they?
I sped read the article and I might have missed something (or just slow), but was this just plain a mistake as opposed to actual theft?
Computer glitch!
A mistake, yes, but when the govt showed no inclination to solve the problem she had to depend on a TV station to help her…….
“After trying to solve the problem herself by calling customer support and filing complaints and getting no resolution, she contacted us.”
That’s par for the course.
Government and initiative are mutually exclusive.
That money belongs to the government now. No one would expect you to freely let go of your hard-earn property, so same for the government. Those pensions don’t pay for themselves you know.
They aren’t really in the customer service racket. Spending time helping someone get their money back just reduces the time that agent should be spending on accounts receivable.
Sometimes dude you just have to roll with the punches.
