#DrunkenSocialism Hits A Snag in Virginia

How outrageous liquor laws are killing everyone's buzz.

Egalitarianism has hit the bottle with #drunkensocialism, a trend where bars and restaurants sell tastes of rare and expensive alcohol at cost to customers who would normally not be able to afford such fancy beverages. But current Virginia liquor laws are being a buzzkill when it comes to this new trend. 

Reason TV producer Austin Bragg recently visited a bar in Richmond, VA to investigate why "The Man" is messing with our high spirits. 

While it seems like a win-win scenario for all involved, the restrictive alcohol laws in Virginia make this new trend essentially illegal, according to John Maher, bartender and owner of The Rogue Gentlemen in Richmond. Under rules enforced by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) a bar may not give away drinks or establish "a customary retail price for a drink at a markup over cost significantly less that that applied to other beverages of similar type, quantity, or volume."

"It's heartbreaking and it's stressful to deal with this nonsense," says Maher. "The lovely Prohibition-era rules that we have to follow make things very hard to be a bar in this state."

Some history: BART is currently trying desperately to keep trains running, since the management collapsed under public pressure during a strike 4 or 5 years ago and handed the piggy-bank to the union to avoid being 'unelected' during a election year. As a result, physical maintenance was 'deferred' (ignored), since all the money went to drastically increased wages and benes and the trains are now running on salvaged parts.
So the the elected BoD has now put a bond issue on the ballot to pay for the ignored maintenance and hopes no one will notice they again bought labor 'peace' by giving away the farm.
You would hope that someone other than commenters on libertarian sites might notice the sleight-of-hand, but the Chron is applauding the deal as enlightened management!

The Syrian-origin Swedish passport holder arrested in Belgium last week for his involvement in the Brussels bomb attacks is a former poster boy for Sweden's efforts at integrating migrants into their society.

Now accused of murder, and captured on CCTV cameras carrying bags which contained the explosive devices which killed 32 civilians, Islamist Osama Krayem had once been hailed as a model of integration. A former employee of the city of Malmo, at the age of 11 Osama starred in a documentary about migrants in Sweden.

Both of Osama's parents are Syrian migrants to Sweden, and have told tabloid Aftonbladet they wanted to see their son integrate into Swedish society. The family featured in a 2005 documentary called 'Without Borders ? A Film About Sport And Integration', in which football-mad Krayem demonstrated how the Malmo football team had helped him settle into Swedish society...
