      I tried to keep it general. I said all forms of coercion are immoral. That's why I prefer things like HOAs, because you can choose to live by the rules or live somewhere without an HOA.

        I have a couple of friends who I used to have some awesome, no holds barred political arguments with. Which I think we both enjoyed at the time. But it does tend to get me a bit obsessed with convincing people of things, which is pointless. And also tended to horrify the people around us when things got a bit heated.

        People can reasonably discuss any issue when there is merely a difference of opinion but, if the difference is in fundamental values, debate is pointless.
        
        After many years I have come to realize that libertarians and progressives have a fundamental, irreconcilable difference in values. The same goes for conservatives.
        
        Sometimes I agree with progressives on a particular issue/candidate (I dislike Trump/Cruz), sometimes I agree with conservatives on another (I dislike Clinton/Sanders.) However, the reasoning for my agreement obtains from a different set of values and is entirely different, so there's not even any point in discussing issues where we agree.

        The voting b0oths are private so you could vote for him and reasonably hope to get some of what you want and just tell others you voted for GJ. There will never be a candidate elected who will enter office and on day one announce the Libertarian position is now the law of the land and the NAP is it's foundation.

        I started on about billions of people starving, and she actually said "I don't care." She doesn't care about peoples' health, or the first thing she'd want to cure is terminal starvation. No, it's more important to keep crops and animals "pure".

        Had a friend on facebook the other day posting about how women shouldn't get mammograms because they cause breast cancer. Someone else posted research from the American Cancer Society about how the dose of radiation is so low in a mammogram that it's barely more than you get while sunbathing. Many people felt the need to chime in and say "yeah, well, the ACS profits from doing mammograms and treating people who get the breast cancer!"

        I have the same habit of getting obsessed about convincing. I try to approach any (public) argument on politics like I'm ignoring the person I'm actually discussing with, and instead trying to convince the crowd. I can't convince my progressive friends that banning all firearms is both immoral and impractical, but I can sure as hell come off as more convincing than them for anyone who hasn't thought about the issue on more than a surface level.
        
        Luckily, it's really easy to goad progressives into childish ad hominem attacks that show they're losing the argument while maintaining the appearance of staying on the high road.

Scientists may be closer to revealing the route taken by Hannibal as he crossed to Alps to attack ancient Rome.

A team says they have found a churned up layer of soil at an Alpine pass near the French-Italian border that dates to the time of Hannibal's invasion.

There's a ton of qualifier, but finding more evidence of the crossing would be really cool.

      That's the argument, and it's not obviously wrong at first glance. I don't think the distinction holds up - a tort is a tort, whether you are acting privately or commercially* - but then I'm a libertarian with kooky thoughts about authority and liberty. The conventional wisdom is that there are certain obligations you take on when you go to market and offer a good or service to the public.

        Hence the caveat "reasonable requirement." Also commercial business vs private club or organization. A woman's club is clearly intended to be for women, and a man does not have a reasonable expectation to join it. Ditto for a church, a veterans club, AA. A co-op store is only intended to sell to its members, a soup kitchen might only serve those who appear needy, etc. But if you open a business to the general public, unless there are particular exceptions, you must serve the general public without reasonable discrimination. No shirt or shoes = reasonable discrimination. Like other men or intend to use your cake for a gay wedding = unreasonable.

        Limited liability is a mess that shouldn't exist. The legal system that should just be a lot smarter about assigning blame for big organizations.
        
        This breakdown into "public" or "commercial" behavior is the same game as "police action" and "extrajudicial killing" as far as I'm concerned. We already had enough words for those too. And it's practically Marxism too, with these stupid inventions of new economics-based states of existing. A market (and for that matter all of economics) is just an abstraction for bookkeeping exchanges of scarce goods.
        
        The science behind these mentality differences is kind of interesting. Seems a lot like the conflict between pattern separation and pattern completion to me.

For the first time, my peers had lots of questions and critiques about my choice to wear dreadlocks.

The responses other activists had to my hair ranged from mild irritation to downright anger.

People were constantly making comments under their breath when they passed me about "cultural appropriation" ? I had no idea what that meant.

Some friends eventually suggested some readings and resources that would help me understand.

I read them and learned more about the history and symbolism of dreadlocks in the US in context to black folk's resistance movements against white supremacy. I learned that black folks in the US with dreadlocks are not seen as "quirky" or "alternative," but as "dangerous" and "militant".

I learned to identify the ways that white colonist mentalities show up in our contemporary, everyday lives.

  That line of argument has to be the most baseless "cultural appropriation" argument I have ever come across. I have never met a single person (white or otherwise) who thinks dreads are acceptable on white people, but not on black people. The people who think black people with dreads are "dangerous" or "militant" are not the same people who think white people with dreads are "quirky" or "alternative." People who think dreads look bad on white people but ok/good on black people (which includes myself) have to outnumber people who think the opposite by an absurd ratio.

      I really don't think that's true. Yeah, you do see the occasional "Rasta weed-smoking black guy" with dreads, but they're a pretty normal, natural hairstyle for black people. Almost every white person I've ever seen with them has been a hippy stereotype.

  As mentioned many times here, I used to work a lot with homeless youth, most of them black (sorry Irish). Whenever the black girls saw a white person with dreads, they didn't scream cultural appropriation! Instead, the pointed at them and laughed their asses off.

        To be fair, there are differences between their positions.
        
        Sanders's position is mostly based in labor, and his policies, including his policies on immigration, flow from that. So sure, he's for a path towards citizenship, but he's also for increased border security (just not the cartoonish wall Trump proposes) and reworking trade deals that encourage shifting American jobs abroad. I'm not a Sanders supporter, so I'm sure there's nuance I'm missing, but broadly he's for worker rights and prioritizes American workers (including illegal immigrants into America) over others.
        
        Trumps position is... well honestly, I don't trust myself to give Trump's position a fair reading. He's been more consistent on immigration then he has on other issues, but I don't feel I have a good feel for the underlying coherent philosophy that unifies his "policies".

Organizing a civil society is never easy and the possibility for corruption is always present, but these are not good reasons to adopt a more anarchistic set of beliefs, which is what I believe Libertarian ideology amounts to.
Don't fall for the decades long trick that is trickle down economics. It has always been a flawed theory. For the theory to have any merit we have to assume that people in general are very charitable with their disposable income. I see very little evidence of this, especially from those who can truly afford it. A good case can be made that the less you have, the more charitable you are. If trickle down worked, you'd think 30+ years would be long enough for it to prove itself. We're still waiting.

They have spent their money on things like toys and investments. Those toys created jobs because someone has to make them, and those investments create jobs because that's what capital does. I don't have a link, but Saskatchewan's *nominally* center-right government got re-elected in another landslide, crushing the NDP. Premier Wall is a rank leftist in most policy, but he is allowing private sector intrusion into healthcare which as far as I am concerned makes into New Jesus. Manitoba's NDP government will be crushed in a couple weeks. Canada is said to be going through a left-tilt, but the NDP sure isn't benefiting. AFAIK, soon the NDP will only control....Alberta. They will almost certainly get the heave-ho next election.

        The taxation issue is far more interesting than you claim. Top rates are similar in Canada and America IIRC correctly they just kick in sooner here. Also, no inheritance tax in Canada. Lower capital gains and corporate taxation. You got me on the shitty, over-priced milk, but Muufri might take care of that in 5 years or so. No 'internal checkpoints' AFAIK (D&D ones aside).

        Yep. After getting hit by a car that ran a red light that was being driven by a 15yr old kid with a car full of buddies and a learner's permit. But the kid's dad showed up and made a big scene about who was going to fix the car. The nice officer did him a favor and charged me with DUI (I blew a 0.08 when 0.10 was the DUI threshold, but that didn't matter) and wrote a report that said I caused the accident. That was after dismissing several irate witnesses. Such a nice officer, looking out for that poor kid and his dad. A hero if you ask me.

        Don't they all? Seriously, the cop never even spoke to me until after he dismissed the witnesses and the person who hit me. He was doing the driver's dad a favor by fabricating a story and charges that would result in me being forced to fix the car that hit me. But that's what cops do, isn't it?

    Sadly, Chile is backtracking disturbingly. Student protester assholes who want a 'one size fits all education' from the government or something like are getting what they want. The president is thankfully hobbled by low copper prices and scandal and is not very popular.
    
    Peru is...interesting right now. They will probably end up with either a Pole or another Jap in charge in a few months.

      Until a downturn last year, Chile was still cranking out consistent 5% GDP growth. Heritage still has them at 7th on the economic freedom scale, although you're right that there's been a downward trend the last three years.
      
      The thing about Chile is that their socialist party is substantially more libertarian than the Democrats, so there's no really crazy leftist movement there.
