The Art of Trump
Free markets and the private sector make America great.

Hooray for Donald Trump!
I can ice skate in Central Park because Trump got the skating rink fixed after New York City couldn't.
Couldn't, you ask? Really? How is that possible? New York City government couldn't fix an ice rink?
Sad, but true. Despite six years of effort and fiddling with 13 million taxpayer dollars, government's bureaucracy was unable to fix an ice rink. At one point, they left one side of the rink 6 inches lower than the rest. That's government work for you.
Then, Donald Trump got it done. And done right. He likes to remind us he makes deals happen. Getting things done in New York often means you butter up whoever needs convincing, or you bully them. Trump's good at that.
Is that what we want in a president? Maybe. Probably not.
What bothers me about Donald Trump is that most of his pronouncements are little more than magical thinking. Elect me and "I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created!" "We're going to have win after win after win! You people are going to get sick and tired of winning!"
This is just nonsense. No president, no matter how competent, can make everything good. It's time people stop thinking that political leaders are the answer to our problems.
A Trump rally resembles Barack Obama's "Yes, we can!" speeches from eight years ago. Delirious fans acted as if Obama's election would fix everything about America that they didn't like.
It's why I wrote the book No, They Can't! Why Government Fails—But Individuals Succeed. Government can't fix most things, but free individuals can—and do! Trump fixed the skating rink when government couldn't.
Free people, acting without government coercion, accomplished almost all the things that have made America great. That's why Trump really ticks me off when he says, "We're gonna make America great again!"
His fans love that. But what does it mean? When exactly was America great? When we won World War II? Yes, that was great.
But it wasn't great that at the time many Japanese-Americans were locked up in internment camps; blacks weren't always allowed to vote or drink from public fountains; gay people were beaten by police simply for being gay; and women were basically owned by their husbands and not allowed to have credit cards without their husband's or father's permission.
Was America great then?
It's true that by the end of World War II, America had the strongest military and biggest economy in the world. That was great. But we still have the strongest military and economy. "Make America great again" sounds like everything went bad.
Trump is not the only candidate saying that. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders shout, "The rich get richer, the poor and middle class are getting poorer!"
This is just a lie. The rich got richer, but poor people didn't get poorer. They got richer too, just not as much. Everyone won!
Politicians and the media spread so much false, bad news that for the first time in history, most Americans say that they believe their children will be worse off than they were.
But that's bunk.
Warren Buffet got this one right when he wrote, "The babies being born in America today are the luckiest crop in history. (They) will live far better than their parents did."
If they do, it will be because of free markets and global trade—two things most Democrats and Donald Trump want to smother.
"Make America great again!" is a bad slogan. Let's start a new one: "Get out of our way!" Don't impose your destructive tariffs, immigration limits, tougher libel laws, endless mandates and property grabs. Just enforce the Constitution. Then, get out of our way.
A better life comes from individuals striving toward their own goals, not from politicians. If our future continues to improve, it will be in spite of politicians like Trump and magical promises.

Uh-oh. This is going to completely fuck up the "Trump-is-a-fascist" narrative at Reason. I'll go get the diapers.
Does it? Sounds like a "At least he made the trains run on time" story.
You know who else wanted to make the homeland great again?
Dwight Schrute?
The Rhine land cowboy?
Alex Gansa?
Batman?
Adolphe Menjou?
good one
Danerys Targaryen?
Can I vote for The Stossel Stache?
It's a womb broom. C'mon, man. We've been over this.
A womb broom? It's an abortion tool? I can't even...
The "Jacket" and the "Stache".

And entirely too often, not only does government NOT solve a problem, they specifically forbid anyone ELSE from fixing it either.
Then they proclaim "Market failure, ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL"
.
As much as people bitch about evul corporashuns, they are basically an evolved response both to global commerce and to protect a company's vitals against government predation. If recent history has shown anything, it's that the best way for a company to survive is to get too big to kill. That's not a function of corporations being evil, that's a function of government being evil.
"And entirely too often, not only does government NOT solve a problem, they specifically forbid anyone ELSE from fixing it either."
Wreckers looking to turn a quick buck!
Can we fucking stop with this nonsense please!
I JUST unzipped. I'm not zipping up until it's over.
Stoss is the boss. Damn it, one man can't fix everything, but he's a good start. Stossel 2016.
Agreed Sue, he's very good at distilling his points.
I'm like Franc, I like Stossel. We are both in Montana.
Where you at MLC?
Your bushes.
Mithoula.
You live there?
yeah,since1978
That makes like six Montanans at H&R. We almost outnumber the Californios.
I'd totally vote for Stossel.
Stossel 2016!
If team red would lay off the socon bullshit and run on this it would be a winning strategy. When you apparent nominee is a crony extrordinaire, not so much.
Holy Fuck, I was able to edit this post, somebody sic exterminators on the Skwerlz?
test
Maybe. I am afraid that it would be a winning strategy, in that it would do well, but not in that it would WIN, not really. Because there are too many people who are too concerned in "getting theirs" that they aren't willing to support a free market. Generally, most folks think that THEY are over regulated, but wants MORE regulation on other industries, even if they don't really understand that irony.
Makes you wonder how well Trump would be doing if he had just run as Donald Trump, a tax-cutting, socially tolerant, pro-business, pro-second Amendment candidate who would enforce the immigration laws. I guess he thought he needed to be bombastic to get media attention.
That is EXACTLY who we'll see during the general election. It's a bold move, Cotton...let's see if it pays off.
Have I mentioned I like Stossel?
You've mentioned what you'd like that mustache to do to you.
Stossel really helped solidify my transition from growing up in a socialist family to becoming libertarian. His stuff helps me talk sense into the liberal fascists. Stoss is boss.
Just noted that Franc, how is the beer at the brewery in your neck of the woods?
Awesome!
My bad ,somehow I thought you were around P'burg. Have been to that brewery when it was brand new, nice place.
This is hilarious, I have to admit. 🙂
He's bringing back Christmas too.

Depends on how you measure. While everyone benefits from standard of living improvements begotten by the inevitable march of technological and scientific progress, it's true that millennials earn less in real dollars than their parents did and are carrying much larger debt loads.
Many of them also graduated into the worst job market since the Great Depression, and the labor force participation rate remains the lowest it's been since they were born. They are less able to afford homes.
And the lifetime value of public pension and health care systems will be far lower for them than their predecessors (SLD on public benefits).
More of them live in poverty than their predecessors.
In fact, this generational gap has even drawn the notice of certain mainstream and even alternative publications.
You [Pat (PM)] have saved me considerable linking and typing.
But Stossel says that ain't so. Its all just a lie. They are better off. Top Men insist that it is so.
Everyone is better off on average, but not everyone is better off.
Yeah - when the 1% of the population increases its wealth exponentially, everyone is better off... on average. When your head is on the hot stove and your feet are in the icebox, you're comfortable... on average.
I'm generally not one to blame anything on an entire generation, but I feel pretty comfortable saying that the Baby Boomers turned everything they touched into utter shit.
Stop typing on your shit keyboard.
Yeah, and the Apollo program, that was way messed up.
And being comfortable is what's important to you, right, Thom? But surely Woodrow Wilson needs to take a little of the blame for how fucked up the world was until we came along, too? And.... let's see... Charlemagne? Brzezinski?
If you listen to my Pop, a lot of Boomers "gave up their ideals, hitched themselves to a mundane job, paid taxes and raised families just like previous generations." Some actually "got drafted and fought and were killed in a foreign war they didn't believe in." He's clueless.
I agree with you - our generation is going to be great at running the world. We're going to be the best jobs generation the world has ever seen. And foreign policy? Goes without saying!
My generation struggled many years before learning to embrace the suck, the post-millenials will not have to endure the struggle - I'd say that makes them the winners. Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose and the children born today will be the freest people ever known.
/SMOD 2016
Id say the next generation is pretty much always gonna be the "winners", until we achieve full equality under president sanders. think of how nice your life would be if someone had invented a transporter. then think about the untold generations suffering without. did you know that a hundred years ago you couldnt even get a pizza delivered? Inter-temporal privilege!!
The freest people ever known didn't have the largest government in human history to support.
Try sucking on student loans that are as much as a 1/3 of your monthly income after college, with an employment and economy that are both in the toilet because of the federal mafia, and then tell me how wonderful it is.
Progress isn't inevitable. Humanity has gone backwards before. Usually by closing borders.
You are so full of revisionist shit.
the reason Trump is so successful as a candidate is all the trailer parks in America banded together and finally found a candidate that can relate to them-all the Trump rallies I've seen look like an entire trailer park got together to support Trump.
That's not true, but why would that be a bad thing if true?
Because everyone knows trailer park folk are bigoted fools who resort to generalizations.
*applause*
It's a joke-geez some commentators on here are too uptight.
Stossel's reports always read and sound like they were written by a high sophomore in the hall outside the classroom where they were due in five minutes.
Question: Biggest on air douche;
John Stossel
Geraldo Riviera
Alan Combs
Lawrence O'Donnell
Chris Mathews
Anderson Cooper?
Feel free to rank in level of doucheyness
Never touch the stuff. The only one I could identify in a lineup is Geraldo--from inevitable contact with telescreens in public places, elevators. etc... Deliberately watching that crap simply has to cause brain damage.
Geraldo Rivera. Why even put anyone else on the list?
I vote libertarian because the DemoGOP are a secret band of robbers and murderers WAY too similar in altruist ideology to the communo-fascist totalitarians that murdered millions of innocents in the thirties to... well... yesterday. So if The Don seems slightly different from the rest of the soft machine parasites, that is not necessarily a bad thing. Observe that in all hand-wringing appeals to how The Don (or anyone else) is horrible, none dare state outright that the bad person is horrible compared to Ted, Hillary, Whutzisname, the Socialist or (in your dreams) a Libertarian Party candidate.
Make America More Free:
3C Plan: Cut Spending, Cut Regulation, Cut Taxes.
"by the end of World War II, America had the strongest military and biggest economy in the world."
And millions of Americans still didn't have electricity or indoor plumbing.
Or the Internet or cable TV or cell phones with a built-in computer.
What the hell has someone done with their life that in the year twenty freaking sixteen you cannot get electricity or plumbing? Sounds self inflicted to me.
Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. One of Stossel's best posts here at Reason. He sounds more Objectivist's every time I read him. Clean, concise prose that is positive, optimistic and principle-based. Not a smidgen of confusion, cynicism and defeatism that colors a lot of libertarian screes. Stossel sounds armed and ready for the intellectual battles ahead. Good for him.
The best description of Trump I have heard was on a talk radio call in program from one of his supporters. Trump is reinvigorating the American Spirit.
Perhaps the most famous book on capitalism described it as a "spirit" (Max Weber, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism).
Sad that Stossel can't see this.
Actually , the attack on any practical affordable sources of energy does have the potential to may life worse for the poor ( and everyone else ) in absolute terms in the future .
Nice that you are so optimistic about the future of this country John Stossel, too bad your wrong. Selling off our wealth and opportunity while importing foreign labor and opening our borders to unlimited cheap labor is destroying that future for millions of Americans. You're right about a lot of things John, but you're a one percenter and you just don't get it. Black unemployment above 25%, the selloff of manufacturing jobs can be traced directly to the phony one-sided, and not our side, phony "free trade". It's been going on for 40 years and this is the end.
So, Trump bullies people? So what. At least half this country is a bunch of pussies. They deserve to be bullied.
My dad was the civil engineer who headed the project for that skating rink. Yes! He was pleased that Trump just up and did it. Me too. Also impressed by Trump when he walked off an "Ali G show," saying that he "did not have time for this. . ." Howsomever, I might go for Gary Johnson this time 'round.
Free trade in goods, but not in people.....after all, trafficking in people is illegal.
my Aunty Avery got a fantastic metallic Audi Q5 just by working online with a computer

"Free people, acting without government coercion, accomplished almost all the things that have made America great."
Also, there was this little thing called slavery which generated a large fraction of the wealth of the early nation; it's quite efficient at generating wealth for one set of the individuals involved.
I believe that comes under the heading of "captive people, acting under the coercion of free people"
Relevant here because, for everything Trump has accomplished, he leaves

"Was America great then?"
Yes, in some ways the U.S.A. was great. In other ways it wasn't. That's just the nature of reality. Nothing is going to be all great, all the time.
Free trade as Stossell understands it is the same. It's great for some, and not so great for others.
"This is just a lie. The rich got richer, but poor people didn't get poorer. They got richer too, just not as much. Everyone won!"
Yes, it is true that the average standard of living across the globe has risen over the last 30 years or so. But this generalized increase is not that impressive if you take into account how low the starting point was for many people.
Globalization is, and will be - like everything else in the human sphere - a mixed bag.
The one constant that you can count on as never changing is this: Whatever their situation, a human being will want to make it better, will want more, for themselves and their progeny.
One hundred years from now this proposition will still be true. And one thousand years from now? Yep, still true.
Technology may keep evolving and living standards will continue to increase for the average person around the world but it will never be enough. The human appetite for "progress", for more food, more money, more security, more medical care, more rights, more pleasure etc., etc, on and on and on, ad infinitum. It will never stop. And conflict arising from this reality will never cease either. It will ebb and flow, but over time, it will continue.
I liked the 1980s. Best decade I remember.
