This Is Your Last Weekend to See the National Gallery's Power and Pathos Exhibition
What ancient art says about 21st-century America.
This weekend is your last opportunity to check out the once-in-a-lifetime Power and Pathos exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
The exhibition, which ends its three-month run in the nation's capital on Sunday, features a quarter of all surviving bronze statues from the Hellenistic period. It previously made celebrated stops in Florence and Los Angeles.
Watch Reason TV's primer on the exhibition and find out what this ancient art tells us about 21st-century America:

I went to see it when it first got there. It's pretty impressive and interesting. It's amazing how detailed they could make the sculptures. I learned about the Herma. I never saw those before. I was like WTF? Weird.
I spent Christmas in DC, and the exhibit made the locale tolerable. It really is astonishing stuff. Pictures don't do The Orator or Sleeping Eros justice.
And yeah, the Greeks were cheeky little buggers. A pillar with some balls on it. I wonder if that confused any foreign travelers.

Don't you mean hxtory, you cystnominalpatriorc?
Patriorc? Oh I'm definitely stealing that...
What in the hell is going on with the Trump rally?
Trump's violent rhetoric is causing people who don't like Trump to be violent. Didn't you get the DNC talking point memo?
I guess it could be the GOP talking point too.
I guess it could be the GOP talking point too.
I got back to you re: pho
What the fuck happened to the narrator's head? Is something nesting in there? I thought I saw something move in there.
I had no idea they were remaking "Eraserhead."
What the hell did they do to Rutger Hauer's eyeballs?
2 things:
1. I have to (against my will) go to a wedding in eastern Connecticut at the end of May. Looks like the venue is almost on the NY border. I don't even know where I'm flying into yet. Any chance of turning that into a fun vacation, or am I fucked?
""Eastern Connecticut "" ""almost on the NY border.""
(refers to mental map, remembers how useless that is)
you sure you got your bearings correct there?
Western Connecticut.
I forgot that shit is reversed out there.
Kent.
its true, east coasters walk on their hands and the toilets flow in reverse.
anything past the ends of the metro north train lines is all, "Barbarian Hinterlands" to me. Kent's a bit north of Danbury. You could hit the factory outlets-mall that are littered around out there? Besides that, i'm not much help to you.
I do the factory outlets (next month in fact) when I go here. But that's when I'm 2 hours from home with my car. I don't generally shop for necessities (or at all) when I travel by air.
Wow, it's in the middle of nowhere.
Yeah. I didn't know that middle of nowhere existed until now.
Niagara Falls looks too far away. Foxwoods, probably too far away. Where am I going to get drunk, other than at the wedding?
lol. yeah, uh about 12 hour drive.
In *theory* i suppose you could go west to Dover Plains NY (top of blue line), take a metro north train to the city, party like a rock-star, fly out of laguardia
ok, 6 hour drive. It seemed longer to me. I told you i'm useless past city limits.
If I go to the city, I'd be obligated to party with my BIL. I'd prefer not to. It's a shit show, and not in the fun way.
Dont know what to tell you. My only "fun" destination in that direction is New Paltz, which is a hippy town with some bars and some great rock climibing and one of the nicest hotels in america
that's about an hour west of Kent
Now that's what I'm talking about.
Researching now. Thanks.
Ouch. A room that will fit my family is about 950 a night.
Perhaps I should have said, "one of the most expensive hotels in america"
Atlantis is one of the most expensive hotels in the world, but I can still squeeze in there for 85% under rack rates. I have no juice in Boon Fuck, NY
Did you try yelling, "DO YOU KNOW WHO THE FUCK I AM?" It always works for me.
Crusty probably has a better inside-line on the activities in the region that don't involve picking one's toes in Poughkeepsie
It would probably take you 90 minutes to get from Danbury, Connecticut to the Mohonk Mountain House. It would probably be a shorter drive to Mohegan Sun from Danbury, not that those two locations are comparable.
Crusty, I'm listening. I have never been to the area, and I know nothing about it.
I'm traveling with the wife and 3 kids, so no romance/fucking. Just looking to run the kids wild and enjoy the area.
Bullshit. Request a sexbox.
In this area it's easy to recommend hiking and wine tasting, so I will have to think about what a person would do with kids out there.
With kids, I wine taste out of a red SOLD cup no matter where I go. And by wine, I mean beer.
It would still be a drive from Danbury, and there is truly nothing around there, so you would be stranded, but the kids seem to like Rocking Horse Ranch.
I will think about something closer to Connecticut.
What CJ didn't mention is that if you go hiking, be sure to inspect everyone afterwards for ticks - as you would be gamboling around ground zero for Lyme disease.
2. Our resident stalker is trying to impersonate me on other news sites. For example, here: http://www.dailycal.org/2016/03/15/348651/
MENTAL ILLNESS IS IN THE AIR, BOYS!
Why pick on you especially? seems odd. And didn't Mary/hasn't Mary done that w/ you before?
the profile says both that the person registered w/ disqus *yesterday*...but also has 325 comments. Don't know what to make of that
I push all the right buttons, I guess.
This only came to my attention because somebody I know was reading the Daily Cal. It's my home turf.
I'll genuinely feel sorry for this person until I'm done with my next Dorado.
That's just creepy.
Ugh. Ethnocentric western imperialistic cultural hegemony much?
real art is made out of elephant poo.
Only if it's splattered on depictions of the Virgin Mary.
These masturbation euphemisms etc...
real art is made out of elephant artist's poo.
Well, that's one way to resolve your daddy issues.
No no, the Greeks meant all those bronzes ironically.
I wonder how many bronze balls they actually melted down and made into hinges? Might have been an early ED appliance.
(That one guy must go to Rand Paul's Libertarian Barbershop)
The Fawlty Towers are being demolished.
So I guess it's one thing that Reason style libertarians are for, besides government funded abortion, is government funded museums?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's not much. But still, it's using money taken by force from citizens to use for something completely frivolous.
I take it back, it gets $100+ million a year. Jesus
Or you could have impregnated her. BAM! Instant Viet-Mom.
Do you want the links to the spice bags? No idea if you have a Saigon Market in Minny.
Just remember Pho is pronounced 'fuh', not 'foe' like it should be.
Pho Spice Bags.
20 minutes, and then throw them away. Otherwise, it's going to look like someone shit your soup.
Fuh you
