As Sanders Polls Closer to Clinton, Obama Declines to Stick His Neck Out
It's typical for the president not to endorse early, but it's a reminder there's no true 'successor.'

There's much ado in the media over the fact that President Barack Obama is at this point declining to endorse a successor within the Democratic Party before the primaries started. Well, really, the ado is over the fact that he's not endorsing Hillary Clinton. White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough told Meet the Press on Sunday the president will not endorse a Democratic nominee until he or she has been chosen by the party.
It is not unusual for the president to wait, though it may feel odd given Clinton's former relationship with the Obama administration as secretary of state. The Christian Science Monitor notes that some of the more recent Republican presidents (Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush) declined to endorse candidates prior to the primaries. Our previous Democratic president, Bill Clinton, did endorse Al Gore earlier, though, and that might be what's setting some tongues wagging.
Obama has also declared that he won't endorse a candidate in either party that doesn't support his perception of "common-sense gun reform." Some pundits are perceiving this as a nudge toward trying to push Bernie Sanders, who has a history of votes that at least acknowledge that the Second Amendment exists and means something.
It must nevertheless sting for at least some in Clinton's campaign, if not Clinton herself, to have this typical "wait and see" scenario play out. Clinton's entire campaign is revolving around not only aping just about every single one of Obama's positions, but the very dynamic of candidate as beloved activist celebrity drawing the stars out in support.
And yet, something is just not gelling as well for her as it did for Obama (eventually—recall his initial underdog status). The possibility of a Sanders upset in Iowa and New Hampshire is growing. Polls have Sanders within six points of Clinton among Iowa caucus-goers and four points behind Sanders in New Hampshire among likely voters. As always, we should overestimate neither the polls nor the value of the outcomes of these early states, but the polls do help highlight why Obama is holding his tongue. Lots of Democratic voters do not see Clinton as the natural successor to Obama, despite the way she's campaigning. And perhaps there's a significant number of Democratic voters who actually don't even want Obama 2.0.
Of course, her email scandal from her private server as secretary of state continues to unspool. Unnamed sources (take it for what it's worth) tell Fox News the FBI is considering whether the possible intermixing of Clinton Foundation work and her work as secretary of state might have violated anti-corruption laws.

Speaking for my local politics, the definition of 'corruption' has become very narrow indeed.
Might have? Gee, that's a real puzzler.
The one thing that is not a puzzler is her courageous contribution toward helping all Americans understand that inappropriate "parody" should be punished with jail. She is to be thanked for this, although she did receive some assistance from prosecutors in New York who also deserve some credit. See the documentation of the nation's leading criminal "satire" case at:

whether the possible intermixing of Clinton Foundation work and her work as secretary of state might have violated anti-corruption laws.
It's bullshit lines like this that I just can't wrap my head around. "Might have"? What the fuck? Any other federal employee who engaged in such behavior absolutely would have been fired and prosecuted.
I don't know if I believe that. The bureaucracy moves to protect it's own regularly. Especially at the upper-end of the centralization spectrum.
Not when it comes to classified information. The federal government, and the Obama administration in particular, is just a step shy of draconian when it comes to punishing the rank-and-file for even unintentional violations of classified handling. Clinton was running a secret, unsecured server to conduct *all* of her business as Secretary of State to avoid any oversight (in violation of numerous laws).
Derp is right...if it were *anyone* else, there wouldn't even be a question of whether she'd be charged. Anyone else would already be under indictment. I'm just hoping the reason she hasn't been charged yet is that the FBI really is looking at just how far out her corruption goes...and I suspect it goes a very long way and touches a lot of people...and that they're making sure their case is absolutely ironclad before recommending prosecution. They fuck this up, after all, and she wins...it's going to be ugly. And if they do prosecute her, and the leaks have been accurate, it's going to be the biggest political scandal in U.S. history.
Obama will protect Hillary from criminal charges and he will endorse her.
Only after she wins the nom.
Maybe he'll only endorse her after she gets the nom, which would be sort of a meaningless gesture right? What's he going to do at that point, endorse the GOP nominee?
But if necessary, and it's looking increasingly likely that it will be necessary, he will protect her from criminal indictment before the nomination.
More interesting would be if Sanders wins the nom, then Obama refuses to endorse him over the gun control issue and also doesn't protect Clinton from prosecution.
He won't refuse to endorse Bernie. Bernie is a lot more aligned with Obama's ideology, while Hillary is a lot more aligned with Obama's corruption.
If Bernie gets the nom, Obama will endorse him and the Dem establishment will just try to bend him to their will.
He would be a useful idiot
Well, he's already got the idiot part down, so,...
As a non-lawyer, I ask:
Can Obama actually do anything to protect her from an indictment? Isn't his pardon power useable only if she's convicted of something?
Or do you mean direct the FBI to stop investigating?
Or do you mean direct the FBI to stop investigating?
Yes, that's what I meant, she'll never be indicted, Obama will protect her.
No matter what someone on the left may believe, she gets indicted and it's over.
Do we honestly believe that Obama's justice department (deliberately lowercase) will elect to indict Clinton on any charges? The FBI works for AG who works for El Presidente, he can direct that no indictment will be handed down.
He can pardon whoever assassinated her to keep her from facing charges.
There doesn't have to be a conviction for the President to issue a pardon. Nixon hadn't been convicted when Ford pardoned him.
That said, I don't think that he'll pardon her. Obama cares about one thing more than anything else...that everyone gush about what a wonderful President he was after he's out of office. He knows what happened to Gerald Ford when Nixon got pardoned. Ford was hated for it and was probably the most obscure former President for the rest of his life. Obama could never handle that.
It may be the one time that Obama's vanity actually ends up being a positive.
Take 2:
Obama will have Hillary indicted after she shuts Bernie out of the race. Michelle will throw her hat in the ring at the convention to save the party.
Eight More Years!
If that would happen, by 2024 Democrats remaining in congress will be in single digits and there won't be more than a few democratic governors and state legislatures controlled by Democrats. They should be careful what they wish for. Same scenario with 8 years of Clinton.
In fact, I would be surprised if there were not a real civil war in the USA before Clinton could finish her 2nd term. She's already promised to go way further than Obama with executive actions.
Everyone hates Clinton. Congress would have no problem ripping her to shreds or even impeaching her without exposing itself in the following election. The usual suspects would bitch, but Joe Q Public wouldn't defend her the way they did Bill.
The first woman president cannot be impeached. Well, she could be impeached, but she won't be removed, and no limits would be put on her power.
I think you're underestimating how much of Obama's impeach-proof status comes from his charisma and how much from his minority status. Most Ds are not college professors who care about cultural marxism; they defended Bill and would defend BHO because they're likable. No one likes Hillary, and no one's going to stick their neck out for her outside the NYT building.
I know, I'm just trying to weigh the impact of the first woman president being impeached and the backlash by outraged shreeking feminist harpies and their support in the media.
And the conclusion I come to is that the congress critters, being the spineless pussies they are, would relent to the pressure and back off.
She'd play the 'I'm a poor woman being attacked by the Patriarchy' role and that would be enough for most Democrats. Fact is, her gender will help her more than Obama's race helped him. There isn't countless millenia of chivalry in our blood telling us it's mean for a white guy to attack a black guy, just a few years of political correctness; but a bunch of men (worse, Republican men!) hounding the first female president? Even plenty of fairly moderate-minded men will be falling over themselves to play the white knight. Hillary can do damn near anything and still be untouchable.
I'd love to believe that matters, but Congress's role at this point is to whine and stamp their feet while the executive rewrites laws, goes to war unilaterally, and does pretty much exactly what it wants.
I give it 20 years before we have an executive who attempts to install Supreme Court justices by his lonesome.
Twenty years is generous, we are practically there now.
A la FDR, eh?
+1 court-packing
There will not be 8 years of Clinton. She's looking so unhealthy now that I doubt she will survive for eight years. No way she'll be elected twice, and I really doubt if once will happen.
She'll win once I'd say; whether she'd run again I don't know. I don't think she'll really want to (who really wants to be president anyway) but for the purpose of her legacy she may do it anyway and just spend her whole second term on vacation. She's dumber and less principles than Obama, and at least less principled than Bush, so I think even more so than in Bush's administration it will be the advisers and cabinet members running everything with her content to just be a figurehead. I just don't see her being interested enough or intelligent enough to do much, just leave it to the ostensible professionals.
I don't see her winning even once. The same party rarely holds the White House for three terms in a row, she has tons of negatives and baggage, legal troubles, health troubles, and is just not a natural politician. I have Democratic friends who have said they may not vote for her.
I've got a Democratic friend, who's actually worked on Democrats' campaigns, who hates Trump and Cruz but has said he'll consider voting for either over Clinton. Of course he's a pretty rare breed (liberal-leaning former Marine), but if he's looking at voting GOP at this point just to go against Hillary then I suspect as her scandals continue to unfold he's going to have a lot of company.
Thanks. I just threw up in my mouth.
*Side note: I do think Michelle will follow the Hillary model. The next senator from Illinois most likely.
What Would Daley Do?
If he has her indicted, I would anticipate a "Run, Joe, Run" campaign.
ALGOR! ALGOR! ALGOR!
I am tellin' ya'll, it is a reaaallll possibility.
Lol, he'd lose in a landslide.
I predict voters will quickly warm to him.
He would go full on looney with the global warming stuff. An overwhelming majority of people don't care about that. Gore is still living in the 90s, he will fail to connect with voters in any meaningful way.
I see what you did there.
That' what they would do if they have any sense. Biden is a lot more popular than Hillary. Hell, smallpox is more popular than Hillary.
The Biden thing is a little strange/confusing. Back in the summer, the Biden camped "leaked" the story that his son's dying words were begging ol' Joe to run. This was widely seen as a proto-announcement. So, when he didn't run a lot of people were nonplussed.
He probably woke up one morning with a horse's head in his bed, with a note from Hillary.
Strengthening his negotiating position. I'd be curious to see what sorts of buyouts are needed to convince the sitting VP not to run.
Maybe Joe Biden is the Democratic Party's version of Little Carmine from the Sopranos: the gaffe-prone, apparently retarded heir to a Mafia throne who is inexplicably smarter than all his colleagues in one respect: realizing that "the life" just isn't worth it; better to just retire and enjoy your wealth and be happy instead of wreaking havoc all over the place to get to the top of a hollow pyramid.
Smallpox/Anthrax 2016!
America's favorite gropey uncle.
"Obama will have Hillary indicted after she shuts Bernie out of the race. Michelle will throw her hat in the ring at the convention to save the party."
A negroe and a transvestite elected before a woman!
What kind of quid pro quo is that? She should have to endorse him, or protect him from criminal charges.
Hello, fellow American. This you should vote me. I leave power. Good. Thank you. Thank you. If you vote me, I am hot. What? Taxes. They'll be lower, soon. The democratic vote for me is right thing to do, Philadelphia. So do.
+1 This doesn't make any seeeeense!
HEY, I NO TEACHA YOU DAT!
#illiterate
God, I love Charlie.
The words anti-corruption and Clinton do not belong together. It's like Trump and free market,
No, no, no. She pronounces it like "Auntie Corruption," which is what her nieces and nephews call her.
"Do you know who I was? Nobody. Except on the day after, I was still alive. This nobody had a chance to be somebody."
Auntie Corruption
Trump should start referring to her by that name.
+1
+1 Colonel Angus.
"Bring out the fresh linens, we're having Colonel Angus here tonight!"
Clinton, Sanders, Trump? It's like the trifecta from hell.
It is ragnarok come to life.
I find myself saying that every election.
If one of them names Oprah his/her running mate it will truly be the sign of the apocalypse.
"And yet, something is just not gelling as well for her [Clinton] as it did for Obama (eventually?recall his initial underdog status)."
Because Obama was an unknown cipher and Clinton, despite her ongoing attempts to remake herself, is a well-known entity who many people find repulsive?
My God, if the crusty old white guy gets the nomination over the woman, the wailing from certain parts will be epic.
the wailing from certain parts will be epic.
Doubt it. For the usual suspects, it's all about loyalty to the team. And besides, Bernie is more aligned with their political views than Clinton.
Yep. Now, if HRC wins the nom but not the general, then there'll be wailing about how sexist the country is.
The "it's her turn" crowd is pretty large and very vocal. At a minimum, heads will explode at the intersectionality.
I don't think it's actually that large. Overwhelmingly what I'm seeing from liberals on message boards is how much they dislike Clinton and think Bernie is the better candidate...even the ones who think Bernie can't win. I think her level of support is a lot more shallow than it's made out to be...and that the press has been complicit in overselling how enthusiastic or numerous her supporters are.
It could be that what I'm observing is just anecdotal and not indicative at all of what's going on...but there's almost no presence for Hillary online anymore from what I see. It's just disappeared over the last few months. I don't think that the scandals are going to help her rebound either...especially since, as others have noted, the only reason people tolerate her in the first place is because of her husband.
Oh, the feminists will be fuming nonetheless; only the die-hard socialist ones won't be. Even the one's who like Sanders better will find a way to simultaneous endorse him while blaming his victory over her on sexism ("right for the wrong reasons" or something).
And remember, plenty of the people we're talking about are dumb enough to believe that Hillary's turn toward socialism is sincere and not just a ploy to stay Bernie's advance.
It'll just be proof of how sexist this country still is.
The Berninator is closing in on the wicked witch of the east. People fucking hate her, man, and I'm talking about a lot of people on the left also. I've had a couple progs tell me they'll vote for Trump or whoever the GOP nom is if she gets the nomination. These are people who are life long Dems. I don't really believe them, but to even hear a Democrat say that is unprecedented in my own experience. And the first president I was old enough to vote for was Reagan, so I've been around a few election cycles.
I also know some Dems who are really waffling about Hillary.
My God, if the crusty old white guy gets the nomination over the woman, the wailing from certain parts will be epic.
Meh, there are right crusty old white guys, and wrong crusty old white guys. Bernie strikes me as the right one.
Although to be fair, to the Shrillary Feminist movement, there probably is no right crusty old white guy.
The term of art is "queef."
Finally, somebody went there.
Well, when you set 'em up so nicely, it would be ungrateful not to.
"It's typical for the president not to endorse early, but it's a reminder there's no true 'successor.'"
I dunno, in Obo, we got Bush-3, with a sizable seasoning of socialism. Hil will give us more of the same with added felonies.
Bush 2's spending record looked very socialist to me.Oh,and the security state,Obama piled on.Now there's a race to do even more.
"Bush 2's spending record looked very socialist to me."
I don't disagree, but we didn't get B-care from him.
We did, though, get Medicare Part D, an albatross unto itself.
"Obama piled on."
Obama is to W as FDR was to Hoover.
Exactly.
"Clinton's entire campaign is revolving around not only aping just about every single one of Obama's positions"
Well, that's unfair. They are very different in many areas, which Hillary is happy to talk about...for example, number of grandchildren, and also breasts.
And lack of a penis? Maybe?
How many breasts does Obama have, anyway?
"I don't like 'bro'. It's too ethnic."
Mansierre, then?
Did Hillary really tell Latinos that she's their grandma?
She white as a sheet, Is that racist?
Did she say "abuela" or "viejita"?
We should just star calling her "grandma Clinton".
Then I'm going with "Bernie the Phish", and Liz "Dances with Lies" Warren.
It's just unbelievable that she'd actually say something that fucking corny and downright stupid. This is a problem the Democrats are going to run into. They are very insulting and condescending to minorities, especially in the fact that they believe that they are incapable of thinking for themselves and doing anything to actually help themselves succeed, and that all minorities somehow automatically owe the Democratic party their unwavering support.
So what, it's not like minorities are suddenly going to start voting Republican.
I think you're wrong about that. Watch, the dems are going to lose a big chunk of their minority support. Not all minorities want free shit and communism. And in fact, a lot of them are very socially conservative compared to most Americans.
Not all minorities want free shit and communism. And in fact, a lot of them are very socially conservative compared to most Americans.
This has been true for quite some time, yet they overwhelmingly vote Democrat, because the Republicans are racist meanies.
My opinion: In some ways, I'll believe it when I see it, because I don't understand how Asian Americans can vote Democratic ever given just how badly AA fucks them over.
But I do believe what can not continue indefinitely will end... and I just can't see the Democrats pandering to one racial group with high rates of intermarriage (hispanics) and telling another to fuck off (Asians) and them NOT losing support over it.
Who knows? Maybe mixed-race voters will break more Republican than purely Asian American or Hispanic American, and interracial marriage will just mean more mixed race peeps.
I think a lot of it is the success of the Dem propaganda regime. They've been marvelously successful at convincing people that they are the party of 'the other races.' Meanwhile, the Republicans are falling over themselves to get more high profile minorities for the party. There's more affirmative action in the GOP than any institution in the world; the fact that anyone has ever heard of Bobby Jindal and Ben Carson is evidence of this. Leading democratic politicians could call Asians by racial slurs on a regular basis and still not lose them, because it's just conventional wisdom that the GOP is the new KKK and the Democrats are the party of rainbows.
I used to think Latinos and Asians and even Middle class blacks would gradually start to vote Republican the way Italians and Irish did as they became wealthier and more assimilated. But that was a different time, before identity politics had taken root and 'whiteness' had become such a bad thing. Trump's rise suggests that instead, the GOP will be compensating for growing minority populations not by picking up economically successful ethnic minorities as it did the past, but by picking up poor and working class populist white people who used to be Democrats.
We should just star calling her "grandma Clinton".
I like Auntie Corruption.
We call her La Abuela Abominable -- The Abominable Grandma.
Sorta like a witch who charges you a small fortune for her homemade empanadas, and then you bite into one only to realize it's filled with excrement.
That's pretty bad.
I was gonna suggest "Chupacabra", but I like La Abuela Abominable even better!
+ 1 cankles beast
I am so fucking stealing that.
Empanadas make your ass really big.
Jebus God.
I'm not saying that Hillary can't get elected, but if she does, it will be evidence that 1) widespread electoral fraud is the rule and/or 2) the Democrats can run literally anyone for president and win.
"Yellow dog Democrats."
Like "The Donald", I guess.
was she speaking in her spanish accent
The progressive moment will disappear with Obama, like any charismatic church disappears with its leader.
The media won't even be able to sustain support for Bernie or Hillary doing the things Obama did--because neither one of them is black nor charismatic. A year from now, our long national nightmare with an immune and unassailable Social Justice Warrior in Chief will be over.
Looking at the Republican Party's position locally and in the states, the Democrats should be pushing the panic button everywhere outside of their strongholds. Swing states is where the action's at--not making New York even more Democrat.
Incidentally, I think the backlash against social justice ideals is already in full swing to--not just in this country but internationally.
Between Merkel going after Bookface for not censoring criticism of Germany's immigration policies to the backlash against the MSM in Germany for sitting on the Rapey New Year story for fear of criticizing Muslims, safe spaces are getting exposed and pwned in Europe. They've still got a long way to go before they get free expression over there, but it seems the worm is turning.
So explain all the G.W Bush spending and laws.A pox on both prog houses.
I'm talking about now and going forward. You're talking about eight years ago?
Republicans have both houses of the legislature in 31 states. That's historically a huge number. I think there were 12 under Reagan.
The Republicans have both the House and the Senate in DC, and many of the Senate seats up for grabs are in flyover country--where gun control doesn't play well at all.
You put a Republican in the White House, and this country may be more Republican than it has ever been before.
The Dems should go ahead and keep selling swing voters in swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania on the idea that the Democratic Party is all about eliminating white privilege and gun grabbing. See how much more Republican the country can get.
And the Republicans less Republican than they've ever been before. That is, if you consider Republicans 'small government adherents to the Constitution'. Most Republicans now are just watered down Democrats. Most Democrats now are full on communists. The progressives have been inching the goalpost leftward for a century. The country has went so far left we're almost out of the ballpark.
I think the Republicans are less about being social justice warriors, and they're not openly hostile to capitalism.
And I think those are important distinctions.
This.
They don't even TALK about limiting spending or upholding the Bill of Rights (especially the 4A) anymore.
It comes down to voting for the party of perpetual war, increasing debt, surveillance, and immigrants or voting for the party of perpetual war, increasing debt, surveillance, and against immigrants. Some choice!
The reason I would lean GOP is because they're a LOT better overall on the 2nd amendment and they aren't calling for abolishing both the 2nd and the 1st. They're also better overall on economic issues.
Besides that, they're pretty much a shit sandwich. But the dems are a full on batshit crazy shit sandwich with a side order of communism.
Having a GOP President wiil help the msm start being a watchdog of government instead of it's propaganda wing as it is under Obama.
especially if it's trump or cruz.
if it's Bush i don't think things would change very much
At least I hope.
If you think about it, it makes sense. If your party is mainly winning by being "not Democrat" you will end up with squishes and establishment types.
The Republicans are becoming populists, rather, while the Democrats come out as full on Fabian Socialists.
What Trump has proven is that it's now more acceptable in this country to be a racist than a support of free markets. The former can me forgiven, but the latter, a true mortal sin.
He was a D in an R cloak. Both parties push for bigger, more intrusive, tax raping government.
One thing I'm not looking forward to post-2016 is Obama being the shadow president for ever and ever, amen. He will never gracefully retire the position.
I think he'll become an embarrassment to the Democratic Party if he does that.
What, you're not looking forward to Obama's inevitable HBO show sandwiched between Stewart and Maher?
I bet he will not be able to control himself and gets involved in 2016 election.
I agree. And then what will happen? The Stupid Party will once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and go on a no holds barred suicidal rampage of drug warrior, war mongering, socon dumbfuckery. They can't help themselves.
At least it won't be blatantly hostile to capitalism.
Depends on how many establishment candidates get defeated and how many libertarians get elected in the all out rout of the Dems. If Republicans just realize 'hey we've got the power now, and we can do anything we want!', what they will do is going to look a lot like little John Boehner's and Paul Ryan's got spawned all over the country. IOW, no progress will be made. When Democrats get all the power, they take advantage. When the GOP gets all the power, they fucking waste it.
What we need is a GOP majority that is fucking terrified of the voters.
Imposing tariffs on foreign goods is pretty damned hostile to capitalism, and Trump has already promised to do that. Plenty of GOP candidates will get behind minimum wage increases and price controls too.
Sorry, wrong. Progressivism is not a church, it's a religion. Religions survive the loss of leaders. Progressives are also good at forgetting or ignoring history when convenient. There will always be a new leader who will take us to socialist utopia.
They won't get free expression out of it. It'll just be the other side that'll be censored.

In this case, I think Obama ordering the DOJ not to indict Hillary for her email abuses is tantamount to an endorsement. He apparently dislikes the Clintons (Bill especially), and he is a vain and petty man, so I cannot imagine him enthusiastically endorsing her. He stated his feelings pretty clearly back in 2008: "You're likable enough, Hillary."
This time, it's "I won't send you to prison, Hillary." That's probably plenty for her purposes.
"I'll probably vote for Hillary."
I can hear him saying it now.
Possibly while miming the act of holding his nose.
"Let me be clear. I might vote for Hillary."
"But I definitely won't let my daughters anywhere near Bill during Hillary's inauguration. Oops, did I say that out loud?"
Instead of an indorsement it might just be an ackowledgement that she knows where the bodies are buried
There is no doubt in my mind that they will give the appearance of due diligence and then issue a statement saying they found no wrongdoing after giving it a thorough investigation.
Supposedly Comey could be a wildcard, but I'll believe it when I see it.
Pretty much the only time politicians will take another to task for alleged crimes is when there is political gain to be made from it, almost never does the reasoning include quaint concepts like "the rule of law". So if Comey has something huge to gain by going after the Clinton crime family, maybe this will come to pass. But I'm not sure that his potential gain, whatever it may be, outweighs the cost of going after her.
I've read some about him just because of this.
He seems to have a reputation of a straight shooter, a Boy Scout, and more of a rule of law kind of man than a politician.
We will see. even if his inclination to charge her there will probably be immense pressure not to from some sources of course.
It could poddibly be a future changing financial inducement that sets his family up for generations to come or one that wipes the from the earth over the next decade.
They got Nixon.
Just like when a cop shoots an unarmed citizen. Funny how that works.
I don't think Obama gives two shits about Hillary and Bill. I think he will have zero problem burning them at the steak while roasting a marshmallow over their corpses....even if it loses the dems the election. Dems have been destroyed all over the country and Obama didn't bat an eye or change course. I don't think Hillary is as safe for him as most appear to.
Like most people, he probably finds her loathsome.
"You're likable enough Hillary..."
Maybe he's just waiting for Hillary's indictment to let him of the hook. (fingers crossed!)
