Where are the Moderate Trumpists?

Trump supporters full of rage.

When radical Islamic jihadists strike, countless non-Muslim voices rise up across social media to demand that moderate Muslims condemn the barbarity. As a matter of fact, moderate Muslims do. Ammar Amonette, imam of the Islamic Center of Virginia, did so in the Richmond Times-Dispatch a few weeks ago. You can find many more examples by searching for "Muslim clerics condemn" on Google. Nevertheless, the demands continue.

A similar phenomenon occurs when African-Americans lash out. When Baltimore residents rioted over the killing of Freddie Gray, scolds fretted over the failings of "black culture." Black leaders are expected to condemn such behavior; black parents are faulted for not raising their children properly. In the eyes of some, the guilt is collective.

Which brings us to the Donald Trump-David Ramadan spat.

Trump recently blasted the Republican Party of Virginia for planning to make people sign a statement swearing they are Republicans in order to vote in the GOP primary on March 1. That was noteworthy—it was the first time in memory that Trump has actually been right about something.

But Ramadan, a Republican state legislator who did not seek re-election in November, thought Trump was wrong. He said as much on Twitter. And, in response to Trump's assertion that the Virginia GOP is "stupid," Ramadan called Trump a "MORON!!"

Whereupon the Trumpenproletariat went ballistic. Over the next couple of days, thousands of them went after Ramadan. Some blasted him for trying to "suppress the vote," which is fair comment. Others called him a RINO, or Republican in Name Only. That was inaccurate; Ramadan gets high marks from conservative, business, and gun-rights groups, and lousy ratings from liberal advocacy groups. It also was ironic—given that Ramadan was defending the GOP against an interloper, Trump, who praises socialized medicine, thinks eminent domain is "wonderful," and has said he "really likes" Bill Clinton, who could go down in history as a "great president." If anyone is a RINO, it's Trump.

But many Trump fans went even further than that. They accused Ramadan, who was born in Lebanon, of being a terrorist, a member of ISIS and Hezbollah, someone who practices taqqiya (deception) and who "enlists Christians" for his nefarious purposes. Others threatened Ramadan's safety. One suggested Ramadan better keep a gun handy. "Wanna run your (expletive) mouth to ME (expletive)?" wrote another. "Gee, I'm nice and close by. We could meet, let's say…….your place? ; )."

Unfortunately, this does not seem to be a wild deviation from the norm. In a well-publicized series of incidents, Trump supporters have shown a penchant for bigotry and for getting physical with people whose views they dislike. At a Phoenix rally, one Trump fan yelled "Mother-(blanking) tacos! Go back to Mexico! Go back to Mexico! Nobody wants you!" at a group of Latinos. Another admitted to hitting a protester: "Yeah, I sucker-punched the guy; the guy had a ring in his nose." And hey, what's America coming to if you can't hit people for dressing funny?

A caveat: It's rarely wise to generalize from specific incidents. Just because some Trump supporters act like goons does not mean all Trump supporters do.

Then again, wiseacres on Twitter have developed a hashtag—#NotAllMuslims—that ridicules just this sort of caveat. Not all Muslims are terrorists, you say? Then look at this one. And this one. And… The implication is that, while the naïve like to claim "not all Muslims" are terrorists, savvy observers know better. It's like the old joke about lawyers: The 95 percent who are lying scum give the rest a bad reputation.

By that standard, we might soon need a #NotAllTrumpists hashtag, too: Not all Trump supporters threaten people's safety. Not all Trumpists call patriotic American citizens terrorists for daring to question their Dear Leader. Not all Trumpists call Latinos "mother-(blanking) tacos." Not all Trumpists think, as one wrote in response to Ramadan, that "the Muslim Brotherhood has long infiltrated the neocons." Not all Trumpists assault people. Because surely not all Trump supporters do. Surely there are at least some rational, serene, thoughtful Trump fans among the bug-eyed kooks who scream spittle-flecked invective at the drop of a hat. Aren't there?

Hard to tell. The calm, dispassionate Trump supporters, assuming they exist, have remained silent while the screamers rage. Maybe it's time the moderates spoke up. They could start by condemning the radicals in their midst who make them look bad by lashing out in Trump's name.

Getting physical with those whose ideas they dislike? Ever read the comments here?

"Maybe it's time the moderates spoke up. They could start by condemning the radicals in their midst who make them look bad by lashing out in Trump's name."

Good advice. It applies here as well.

STOP CRITICIZING RIGHT-WINGERS ON A LIBERTARIAN WEBSITE, JACKASS. YOU'RE VIOLATING THEIR NAP

      1. ace_m82   9 years ago

        So, libertarianism is "right wing"?

Now, does that mean that the fascists in Germany were also "right wing"? Because they sure as heck didn't want a minimal government nor any adherence to NAP...

But don't let your logical inconsistency stop you, keep going. I am convinced you can reach peak derp if you try hard enough... You are the Chosen One.

        1. Ceci n'est pas un woodchipper   9 years ago

No, amsoc thinks "right wing" means "person who doesn't agree with me". To the extent that he thinks at all before posting.

        2. Suicidy   9 years ago

It is to traitor shitbag. Paying one's mortgage is also right wing to him.

Oddly, I've never felt physical pain as a result of reading anything anywhere at all. Even your comments, assuming we don't count the ensuing migraine.

I get it. Using collectivist rhetoric and shared guilt against the people using collectivist rhetoric and shared guilt. Probably not worth stooping to their level, though.

Trumpism (which should probably be distinguished from people who enjoy watching Trump shit all over the American political establishment like a human version of Triumph, which is only two letters off anyway) is a mass movement, and mass movements die when they moderate.

  6. american socialist   9 years ago

    "Where are the Moderate Trumpists?"

One might ask, where are all the moderate Republicans? Ever been to a Tea Party or Republican Party meeting? I have. It ain't pretty.

    1. ace_m82   9 years ago

Boehner? Almost every GOP member in Congress?

I suppose I should start by asking what you mean by "moderate". I mean, if you have total government on one side, and zero government on the other, then almost every GOP member falls within the scale of "moderate", though almost all in Washington lean much closer to the "total government" than the average GOP voter.

(Not a GOP member, actually, I'm an an-cap)

    2. Fun at Parties   9 years ago

We do exist, tho moderate isn't the best word to describe fed up liberals discontent with the government anymore. I myself have drifted from centeralist lib to progressive over the past few years thanks to Obummer, and unfortunately there's no way in hell voters like myself are going to let Hillary continue his agenda or worse. Trump is the lesser of the two evils at this point, but the Devil in the details is how dysfunctional the government has become as a whole.

    3. Pat (PM)   9 years ago

It must have been nice to flee from that radical scene and get back to the safe space of your Stalin apologia, you morally bankrupt psychopath.

    1. ace_m82   9 years ago

      How?

      1. Fun at Parties   9 years ago

I'm not about to write a novel here so I'll touch upon one of the things I like the most about Trump having swayed myself and others to the dark side. He has the brass to throw political correctness to the wind and call out the media for the two-faced left-wing shills they are. I genuinely believe the combination of political correctness and media manipulation are a cancer that no longer can delicately excised but needs harsh blunt intervention until SJW tear-jerkers dooming society by screaming everyone needs a safe space crawl back under their rocks so American can get back to the much needed maintenance and repairs it needs.

They were better simpler times when we could all just say "I may disagree but that's your right so it's all cool man" and these days it's going to take a strong tough character to get things back on track and clean house when it comes to the corruption and filth that has polluted the current sitting government beyond redemption.

        1. ace_m82   9 years ago

Dang, got hit by squirrels, tried to reply and it went to the bottom of the page. My bad.

          1. Fun at Parties   9 years ago

It's cool I noticed and graced you with the courtesy of a reply. Always appreciate posters who don't instantly resort to name calling or getting nasty.

  9. Ceci n'est pas un woodchipper   9 years ago

Of course they're pissed off. This is a demographic of people who've got one side telling them they're "bitter clingers", "you didn't build that", and so forth, telling them how guilty they should feel for being white, or Christian, or straight, or male, or a gun owner, and you've got another side that's basically taken their votes on the basis of false promises of small government for decades. Trump is the monster that the Progressives and the inside-DC Republicans created, and much as I disagree with the guy I love what's happening. This is the closest thing to a real revolution in American politics we're likely to see for some time, and I mean that as in possible shooting war. I'm all for it.

  10. ace_m82   9 years ago

True, but Trump has a history of backing those "left wing" people. He also supports almost all the evil things they attempt to do.

it's going to take a strong tough character to get things back on track and clean house when it comes to the corruption and filth that has polluted the current sitting government beyond redemption.

You're living in la-la land. Trump is the result of crony-ism, the unholy combination of government and non-market businesses. They literally transfer tax-payer money to individuals and it's legal. Also, what in heck would make you think that the big-mouthed one would reduce other corruption? Corruption and government size are directly related (reams of evidence if you want it). So would he actually reduce government? After all, government spending is a tax increase either now or in the future...

I've seen worse "plans" for solving "our problems", just not too many of them!

    1. Fun at Parties   9 years ago

I'm living in America, or what's left of it. In 2016 I'm willing to take a gamble it will be made great again because the other side wants to continue down the same ruinous path that has led to my discontent. Best of luck which-ever way you swing, but my decision along with most of the nation's is already made. From the silent majority to outspoken converts, Trump(ism) is a real thing you cannot ignore nor suppress and it is deeply rooted in the restoration and preservation of what made this country strong. We've celebrated weakness for far too long and it's time for a change.

      1. Fun at Parties   9 years ago

On a side note before I take my leave, someone I'd truly like to see take office is Trump's daughter Ivanka. She's diplomatic, shrewd, intelligent, successful, experienced in management/organization, etc...

        Now that's la-la land for you. ^

        1. Fairbanks   9 years ago

And Ivanka is a tad more pleasing to look at than Killary.

          1. Fun at Parties   9 years ago

Indeed tho we'll have to switch the conversation from how big the president's "ears" are to something else. /giggity

      2. ace_m82   9 years ago

A "gamble" still has a chance of going well. The only way a Trump presidency "makes America great again" is if there is swiftly some sort of alien invasion that wipes out just the politicians from Washington... There is no plan here, just "hope and change" rebranded.

*Author wonders how he's supposed to vote for an anarcho-capitalist presidential ticket....

        1. Fun at Parties   9 years ago

People often change brands when they become stagnant, and unfortunately it's the Democrat's whom have done the stagnation so it's time for change again.

          1. ace_m82   9 years ago

Both parties act the same when they're in power. They spend more. I will show you the stats if you need them.

If The GOP nominates Trump, he will either lose and you'll get Hillary, or he'll win and it will still be an absolute (though different sort of) disaster*. If you want to show that there truly is no opposition party in Washington, vote for the man with the terrible message who packages it wonderfully.

I've made almost the exact same mistake you're making back in 2000. I just wish more people would listen rather than get behind their new "team".

*I don't want to sound like a jerk, but 2-4 years from now, just know that I told you so.

      3. SQRLSY One   9 years ago

"We've celebrated weakness for far too long and it's time for a change."

Yeah man, and The Donald has shown how STRONG he is, by trying to use eminent domain power to steal a little old lady's house from her, so he can build a parking lot for limos, for his gambling house.

Yeah, he's strong all right... Strongly smelling of greed and evil and power-mongering egotism....

        1. Fun at Parties   9 years ago

You need to google "trump burns mortgage to save widow's farm." I doubt you will, but I hope you do.

          1. SQRLSY One   9 years ago

            OK, here you go...

            http://www.thepoliticalinsider.....d-the-day/

I am reminded of a former co-worker of mine, he/she would back-stab me all day, every day, under my employer's "forced distribution" performance reviews... Gotta make somebody else look bad, so you can look good, and take home a few extra dollars every year, and not get laid off (which I did, because I only started to fight back, way-way too late). Yes, my back-stabbing co-worker was a WAY-in-the-groove-with-God, Christian... Maybe a Trump supporter, I just don't know...
Well anyway, my point is this: In meetings with both me AND the boss, he'd/she'd say what a good and hard-working dude/dudette I was. When meeting with the boos, in private, I am QUITE sure he/she sang a QUITE different tune! I know, because the "Christian" hard-slammed OTHER co-workers, in front of the boss and everyone, at staff meetings, in the absence of slammed co-worker! If they are fucking with person XYZ when XYZ is absent, they ARE doing the same thing to YOU!!!

The Donald is a Good Guy, only when the media is watching... When NOT watching, he pulls a "Vero Coking" on his victims. His NEXT victim is YOU and all the OTHER fools who vote for this egomaniac! "Strong man", indeed! Hitler, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Nero, Pol Pot, HOW many more Strong Men do we NEED?

            1. SQRLSY One   9 years ago

              Sorry, typo...

"Vera Coking" not "Vero Coking"... I was channeling Nero / Vero I think...

Google "vera coking donald trump" to see details. The Donald is a budding egomaniacal FASCIST!!!!

            2. ace_m82   9 years ago

Apparently that "Christian" missed a whole bunch of Christ's teachings such as:

"Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

              Problems of self-reporting, I guess.

I apologize for what one who claims to follow Christ did to you. The Savior is nothing like that, after all, he died in our place.

              1. SQRLSY One   9 years ago

Thanks Ace... I know that you are correct here, this is the Christ that I know. Thanks for your kind words!

  11. Think It Through   9 years ago

What moderate Trump supporters are supposed to stand up? There are no moderate Trump supporters.

    1. Fun at Parties   9 years ago

Sorry to torpedo your statement but I still consider myself quite the moderate. Tho it goes in the direction of the right now instead of how I use to lean to the left, a less than 3 point score on the political compass is all the proof I need. If you haven't taken the test feel free to google it.

      1. Think It Through   9 years ago

OK there's one moderate Trump supporter.

      2. Carter Mitchell   9 years ago

I suppose I'm curious as to what you mean by "moderate". And why on earth would you support a narcissistic gasbag like The Donald? I haven't had the privilege yet of meeting anyone who's climbed into the clown car.

An even better question: what are you doing reading a libertarian source like Reason? Channeling the principle of know your enemy?

  12. Fairbanks   9 years ago

Is Hinkle saying that Trump-supporting "screamers" and some who get physical (the extent of which has been described by the media as "roughing-up") deserve the same level of denunciation as radical jihadists who "strike" (by which I assume he means maim and kill) and African-American rioters who injure police, destroy property and loot? I'm not a Trump supporter, but I think that's a bit of a stretch.

    1. SQRLSY One   9 years ago

Trump is prepping his brown shirts to come on over to Fairbanks and "persuade" you as we speak... Do NOT resist!!! You have been warned!

    1. Suicidy   9 years ago

Hey now! Reason has gotta keep up that quota of Trump bashing articles. They don't write themselves you know.

  14. Carter Mitchell   9 years ago

"calm, dispassionate" - a good description of an intelligent, thoughtful person. When paired the the term "Trump supporter" produces an oxymoron, similar to "military intelligence".

  15. Freedum_Fried   9 years ago

Interesting, I haven't look into these incidents. I did follow the BLM protestor, who alleged certain kinds of name calling which was not verified by the videotape of the incident. Also, the BLM protestor refused to speak with police about the incident, so while the matter will never be tested in a court of justice, the media can be trusted to parrot the story of a political radical, with the same journalistic integrity as RT reports on the Duma.

What is interesting is that Trump and Trump rallies seem to be the only events singled out for harassment by apparently anti-liberal people who will not permit a voluntary public gathering to take place if the views expressed contradict their own. I think Reason shows its true colors by uncritically parroting the Maoists and the mainstream media.

Do we have any doubt that if you pulled a Westboro Baptist Church routine at a Hillary Rally you wouldn't have fights come out, nasty names spoken, and death threats made?

Someday, a real journalist will appear and report on the true story here: why it is okay to prevent people from being harassed entering into Planned Parenthood (which does not curb free speech according to the Supreme Court), but it is not okay to prevent people from being harassed going to Trump Rallies.

I just realized this was written in 2002. I wonder what the gun crime rate is now. Any government that tells you that you have no right to self defense is not looking after your best interest. Self defense is the most basic right anyone has. No government or police can protect you. I can't believe you all allow this to continue. I keep a gun at home for self defense and have a license to carry it concealed any where I go. And I do. If I am attacked then at least I have a chance to stay alive. By the time the police arrive they can either arrange for my body to be picked up or take a statement from me. I choose the later. Britons let a right be taken from them and now it will be much harder to get it back. But you should try.
