The Paris climate conference kicks off on Monday. Delegates from nearly 200 countries are supposed to finalize the details of a universal climate agreement with the aim of keeping future global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius of the pre-industrial average. Not too surprisingly, all kinds of reports and studies have been issued in advance of the confab warning of impending climate chaos as a way to encourage urgency among the climate negotiators. Doing its part, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has now declared that 2015 is likely to be the warmest year in the instrumental record. Some highlights from the WMO press release:
WMO issued its provisional statement on the status of the climate in 2015, and an additional five-year analysis for 2011-2015, to inform negotiations at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Paris. …
The global average surface temperature in 2015 is likely to be the warmest on record and to reach the symbolic and significant milestone of 1° Celsius above the pre-industrial era. This is due to a combination of a strong El Niño and human-induced global warming, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). …
A preliminary estimate based on data from January to October shows that the global average surface temperature for 2015 so far was around 0.73 °C above the 1961-1990 average of 14.0°C and approximately 1°C above the pre-industrial 1880-1899 period. …
According to preliminary figures as of the end of September 2015, 2011-15 was the world's warmest five-year period on record, at about 0.57°C (1.01°F) above the average for the standard 1961-90 reference period.
WMO
The WMO also found that the increasing frequency of heat waves can be attributed to man-made global warming:
Scientific assessments have found that many extreme events in the 2011-15 period, especially those relating to extreme high temperatures, have had their probabilities over a particular time period substantially increased as a result of human-induced climate change – by a factor of 10 or more in some cases.
Of 79 studies published by Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society between 2011 and 2014, more than half found that anthropogenic climate change contributed to extreme events. The most consistent influence has been on extreme heat, with some studies finding that the probability of the observed event has increased by 10 times or more.

...the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has now declared that 2015 is likely to be the warmest year in the instrumental record.
No, NO, NO! You always make it the second or third hottest whatever on record. Saying that the planet's thermometer read the hottest ever makes you sound less credible.
Thank god that unbiased, non political academics have generated studies that show that after all, weather is the same as climate! Who knew? Oh-that is, it's the same as climate change, and no matter what the weather is, hot or cold, its global warming.
Here is more evidence to support Bailey's position. This year Antarctic ice failed to break the record amounts it has broken in recent years: http://wattsupwiththat.com/201.....ord-highs/
The rule here is, absolutely any weather supports climate change predictions.
"...finalize the details of a universal climate agreement with the aim of keeping future global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius of the pre-industrial average...."
Details, like who picks up the check? Minor detail...
I am hoping-and fairly sure-that the turning of the next economic cycle should put a cap in those two. The 2009 recession killed climate change as a political mover. For all the talk it is just a shadow of what it used to be. There is no money for 'universal health care'. That isn't happening. It's not even happening in some countries where it is officially happening. IIRC, Germany and others are slowly letting the private in to health care services the public sector dominated.
At this point I fear its been rolled into the administrative state vis-a-vis the DoE and the expectation has been set that the feds deal with climate change.
They are too late. There are tens if not hundreds of millions of poor entering emergent middle classes from India to Africa. These people and the governments that tax them don't care much about AGW and are not going to cap themselves over it.
Go back even further, and you'll find that early 1990s recession caused US participation in Rio to stall to some degree. However, even the late 90s tech boom wasn't strong enough to prevent the Senate's 95-0 rejection of Kyoto.
Fact is that CO2 trading and taxes are just ruses for the UN and various cronies to perform periodic cashectomies on the US economy.
We're approaching another Maunder minimum which will probably peak in about 30 years. There is very likely no chance of any warming for the next 50 years or so. The last time we had one of these, it coincided with what is known as the Little Ice Age during which winters in Britain were very brutal compared to the norm for the last thousand years.
The last time Gingrich tried to get the prez nom, he used a ploy called 'Contract With America'. Didn't even bother to change the name on the recycled con. Because he didn't have to.
There's no way I'm taking that bet, is what I'm saying.
Predicting doom if the sinners don't repent worked for religions wanting to control people for thousands of years. Now that too many people have stopped believing in invisible sky gods, it's time for the new devil to appear and keep the peasants in line. He's been named 'climate change'.
Except for the Pope, he still gets to wear the funny hat, as long as he says climate change is real and the most important threat to the peasants, who he's the sworn protector of.
The idea that these guys have globally measured temps to the nth degree for decades much less taken in account all the variables to discern natural climate change from"man made" influences is a fucking joke. That's anything but science which I do fucking love. I can't wait to watch Al Gores predictions in 10 years. I'm guessing the sea level may not cooperate.
Predictions? Every single prediction they've made has been wrong. They don't care about that. They just pretend it didn't happen and move on the next prognostication of doom. They have no morals, no principles, they are basically snake oil salesman scum.
There are still invisible sky gods.
As said here, we've traded imaginary gods for imaginary science.
The dynamic is the same -- Listen to Us or You will be Doomed.
According to commonly observable and recorded data, Buttface is a boot licking sycophant who would agree if Obama declares that the moon is made of green cheese.
15 years of no global mean temperature increase is swept under the rug because of one year that was warmer, mostly because of natural variation. Looks like weather is climate again.
The most consistent influence has been on extreme heat, with some studies finding that the probability of the observed event has increased by 10 times or more.
This is an extraordinary claim and needs some extraordinary proof. A one degree increase in the mean is highly unlikely to cause this without positive feedback effects. If there are positive feedback effects that strong, shouldn't be hard for the studies to identify them.
No, the problem is talking about measurements year to year to the hundreds of degrees based on averages collected from hundreds of instruments which each have their own margin of error to the tenths of degrees.
If all that happened was that we measured stuff, it would be fine. CAGW would fall apart.
The problem is that the data has been repeatedly adjusted via novel statistical techniques. These techniques, when run over random data, create a trend by the design of the statistical techniques themselves. This means that they are biased and unfit for use.
On top of that, the predictions (now "projections" because why follow the scientific process, hm?) haven't come true - not even once.
And, yet, these statistical techniques are not only still used, but encouraged to be used by anyone studying the climate. See, when I see that activity I think corporations and advertising - not science. Perhaps you should, too.

What about the papers mentioned in the main article? Can they be critiqued?
Heat waves 10 times more probable due to man-made global warming
That's not what even the sniveling ideologues at the WMO said.
Of 79 studies published by Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society between 2011 and 2014, more than half found that anthropogenic climate change contributed to extreme events. The most consistent influence has been on extreme heat, with some studies finding that the probability of the observed event has increased by 10 times or more.
"Some studies" out of 79 found a 10x increase, yet you stated that claim as fact.
More over, the statement is misleading. The research papers in question tend to say that global warming contributes to a general trend in events. Yet thus far, there is no observed increase in the frequency of such events. So, on paper, they argue warmer temperatures contribute to x and theoretically x should happen more. So then they use this to argue x was caused by the temperature increases even if the number of x's and intensity of them hasn't actually changed overall.
It's garbage. It's going back to our models say x and so that must be what the real world is doing. They fit the evidence to the narrative.
No, that was his father, duh! Moses had to wonder in the desert for like half a century and then drop his people off in Israel before Jesus could even be born! Get with the story, bro!
"World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has now declared that 2015 is likely to be the warmest year"
Likely? I thought it was settled science.
"finalize the details of a universal climate agreement with the aim of keeping future global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius of the pre-industrial average."
Universal climate agreement. Because climate behaves exactly the same everywhere. Besides this, does anyone who drafts this nonsense actually believe the shit they say? Aiming to keep it 2 degrees like it was pre-industrial is not a rational objective. It all has the feel of Kramer when he was told 'it's like you have no business training at all.' It's like these dumbasses have no training in not only science but basic rational thought.
And our favorite geneticist and researcher but not climate scientist of any kind David Suzuki has upped his hysterical cries to comparing oil sands defenders to slave traders.
Discover is a credit card. I had to say this, because I made this exact mistake this week while reminiscing about an old job I had that was next to one of their offices.
Looks good. This may be a bit overstating things but it kind of looks like the version of Avengers 2 people actually wanted. Maybe this will make up for Iron Man 3.
The young specialist in English Lit, having quoted me, went on to lecture me severely on the fact that in every century people have thought they understood the universe at last, and in every century they were proved to be wrong. It follows that the one thing we can say about our modern "knowledge" is that it is wrong. The young man then quoted with approval what Socrates had said on learning that the Delphic oracle had proclaimed him the wisest man in Greece. "If I am the wisest man," said Socrates, "it is because I alone know that I know nothing." the implication was that I was very foolish because I was under the impression I knew a great deal.
My answer to him was, "John, when people thought the earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the earth was spherical, they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together."
The basic trouble, you see, is that people think that "right" and "wrong" are absolute; that everything that isn't perfectly and completely right is totally and equally wrong.
"My answer to him was, "John, when people thought the earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the earth was spherical, they were wrong. I think the guy may have lifted this from one of Asimov's essays.
I think this article conveys the opposite message from what the author is trying to convey:
"Good thing Native Americans didn't treat the Pilgrims like we treat Syrian refugees
"Today's refugees don't look, sound or worship like we do, but the Pilgrims were different than the indigenous people who still welcomed them here...
"Though their behavior in "the new world" was far from saintly, the Pilgrims were still refugees....
"Come to think of it, maybe the English settlers should have been kept out. Despite whatever good feelings led to the Thanksgiving tableau between the Pilgrims and local Wampanoag tribe, the uneasy relationship between the English and the Natives ultimately dissolved into warfare with the many Native Americans on the losing end. As more Puritans, and then many others, arrived in the New World, even more zealotry took hold. Those who deviated from the religious or political norm were banished and dissenting views were silenced."
The Pilgrims weren't welcomed by all the natives. They were welcomed by some of them, and then they chose sides with those who welcomed them in order to survive against the ones who didn't welcome them. And as you just noted, that eventually turned out very badly for the natives.
Oh, come on, they were just 'nudging' others towards the right way of thinking. Sure, they burned a few witches, but what's the big deal?! It's just like our new day Puritans, the progressives, they don't mean any harm! If a few deniers have to burn, isn't it for the overall good?
Now, don't be a hater, Plymouth, during its existence as an independent colony, never executed any witches - the accused were acquitted.
And Salem wasn't in Plymouth, it was in Massachusetts, and the convicted witches were hanged, not burned.
Hater.
(Oh, and if you check my link, you'll learn this: "In 1662, Thomas Bird was sentenced to double whippings for committing "several adulterous practices and attempts, so far as strength of nature would permit" with Hannah Bumpass, who was also sentenced to be whipped once "for yielding to him, and not making such resistance against him as she ought." Bird was also sentenced to pay Hannah ?10 for "satisfaction for the wrong he hath done her.")
In 1686 James II put a bunch of colonies including Plymouth into a super-colony called the Dominion of New England. When James was overthrown, the Dominion of New England was split back into its original component parts, except that Massachusetts was allowed to gobble up Plymouth in what turned out to be Plymouth's *last* Thanksgiving.
Well, back in 1620 when the Pilgrims landed, I think they thought that everything west of England was Virginia, right? They landed 500 miles north of Virginia and somehow thought they were in VA? Life really sucked without GPS.
"The current panic over Syrian refugees does not reflect our nation's best instincts. Like earlier refugees stretching back to 1620, they are looking for peace, freedom, and a better life for their children."
The refugees of 1620 wanted to build a Godly commonwealth, run by themselves in accordance with what they considered God's rules.

"finalize the details of a universal climate agreement with the aim of keeping future global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius of the pre-industrial average."
How much is two degrees of the pre-industrial average?
It is stunning to me that anyone is still discussing this. The warmistas have about as much credibility as the goddamn Moonies.
Obumbles publicly and shamelessly tasked NASA, NOAA and other agencies with political agendas. In other words he told them to ditch science and get with the narrative.

According to Wingnut.com measuring stuff with instruments is too sciency and cannot be trusted.
Wait, I thought it was your side that said that measuring stuff with instruments wasn't sciency enough, and therefore the data has to be adjusted.
There is nothing inherently wrong with adjustment.
No, but good luck convincing anyone of anything if they lack the knowledge to verify it and don't trust your motives.
Is there anything wrong when the preponderance of adjustments go in one particular direction?
According to commonly observable and recorded data, Buttface is a boot licking sycophant who would agree if Obama declares that the moon is made of green cheese.

If the individual instruments are not biased in their errors, those errors should cancel out and the mean should be unaffected.

A lot of these links you guys are posting aren't landing on the mark. Way too 'fringey'. Have a better one: http://business.financialpost......icy-agenda
What about the papers mentioned in the main article? Can they be critiqued?
Like no one could figure out what Trudeau was going to do? That would be like not knowing what Obama or Hollande are going to do.
If Toronto, NYC, and Paris are all under 3 miles of ice in 5 years, the aforementioned idiots will still be spewing the same canned talking points.
The subheadline:
Every year will be the warmest year on record! Until it isn't, and then it'll be next year! Amazing how "global warming" works. Just. Like. A. Con.
Jesus has been coming back soon for 1980 years. It's a good con if you can get it into the second century.
This
Didn't Jesus appear as a burning bush? It all makes sense now!
That was a White burning bush
No, that was his father, duh! Moses had to wonder in the desert for like half a century and then drop his people off in Israel before Jesus could even be born! Get with the story, bro!
*takes another shot of tequila*
"Most video tapes from that era were damaged in 2443, during the second coming of Jesus."
Wow, he had an erection for 2 millenium?*
* Erections lasting more than 2 millenium require immediate medical attention.
Can Jesus sport an erection so hard that even he couldn't take it in his butt?

You know who else worked just like a con.....
Chrissie Hynde?
Chain Gang
Jim Rockford? Well, until he went legit.
Redford and Newman?
There has been recent controversy over the 'pause-busting' NOAA dataset. A new series composed only of buoys seems to support this dataset.
http://judithcurry.com/2015/11.....more-20470
The buoys have been adjusted. Because ship sea water intakes are more accurate. And hotter.
"human-induced global warming"
We gave it fever.
These are kind of weak/petty points no?
If you say so.
But hidden in the details of their incomprehensible language is something we call bull shit.
And this is just for you:

Never mind. It was a non-sequitur.

And our favorite geneticist and researcher but not climate scientist of any kind David Suzuki has upped his hysterical cries to comparing oil sands defenders to slave traders.

I vaguely remember him doing some hot-shot science-y shows here on Discover or some such not long ago. Shame he's gone senile.
Discovery
Discover is a credit card. I had to say this, because I made this exact mistake this week while reminiscing about an old job I had that was next to one of their offices.
To be fair, I'm going senile too.
Looks like it hasn't changed much in the past 15 years.
OT: Captain America: Civil War
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVdV-lxRPFo
Looks good. This may be a bit overstating things but it kind of looks like the version of Avengers 2 people actually wanted. Maybe this will make up for Iron Man 3.
Ant-Man obliterated my expectations of it. "ants? cmon"
Then it turned out to be the most fun Marvel film yet.
OTish: Interesting essay on science I encountered on the webz
http://chem.tufts.edu/AnswersI.....fWrong.htm
"It is because I alone know that I know nothing." Thus ignoring the fact that he is claiming knowledge with that very statement.
So John Snow is wiser, because he does not know that he knows nothing, and has to be told often.
"My answer to him was, "John, when people thought the earth was flat, they were wrong. When people thought the earth was spherical, they were wrong. But if you think that thinking the earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the earth is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together."
The basic trouble, you see, is that people think that "right" and "wrong" are absolute; that everything that isn't perfectly and completely right is totally and equally wrong."
I think the guy may have lifted this from one of Asimov's essays.
Go to the link.
Speaking of hot...hubba, hubba!
Some people age badly, ewww, that's terrible.

Don't be a quiter
Yeah, you'd think these pro-immigration writers would be saying, "the Syrian refugees totally *aren't* like the Pilgrims, we assure you!"
But, no, so desperate are they to hit all the "feelz" buttons that they dump logic overboard.
The Puritans came to America to worship God in their own way and make everybody else worship right along with them.
(Massachusetts later swallowed Plymouth, which obviously didn't make such resistance as it ought)
Oh, and in case you're tempted to make fun of the woman's name, remember that "Hannah" simply means favor or grace.
Oh, and in case you're tempted to make fun of the woman's name, remember that "Hannah" simply means favor or grace.
I Favor Bump Ass. It's a dance.
Bump Ass, Favor.
So, you're saying that Plymouth isn't in Massholia?
Not before the 1690s it wasn't.
Sometimes you're the Pilgrim, sometimes you're the turkey.
Well, back in 1620 when the Pilgrims landed, I think they thought that everything west of England was Virginia, right? They landed 500 miles north of Virginia and somehow thought they were in VA? Life really sucked without GPS.
Hannah BumpAss
Huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh
Well with a name like Bumpass....
Hannah Bumpass.
would.
And again:
"The current panic over Syrian refugees does not reflect our nation's best instincts. Like earlier refugees stretching back to 1620, they are looking for peace, freedom, and a better life for their children."
The refugees of 1620 wanted to build a Godly commonwealth, run by themselves in accordance with what they considered God's rules.
The great majority of natives would have liked a do-over of that Squanto deal.
Oh, and the first Thanksgiving celebrated by Europeans and Indians in what is now the USA?
It was held in Florida half a century before the Pilgrim thing.
"[T]he meal consisted of an assortment of food, from salted pork and red wine from Spain to yucca from the Caribbean."
I'm sure the yucca was better than it sounds.
" and to reach the symbolic and significant milestone of 1? Celsius above the pre-industrial era. "
Both symbolic and significant.
Ah, the power of whole numbers.
What kind of holiday decorations does a guy in Queens named Gambino put on his house?
Any decorations he wants, capice?
Ha ha, Mr. Gambino, I'm sure you'll take that joke in the light-hearted spirit in which it was intended!
I oiled up my knife, ran it over the stone 15 times on each side side, and started deboning the turkey quarter.
Yep. I'm bleeding, and I have turkey e. coli in my bloodstream.
Just walk it off.
Playa, I just now took the bandaids off my thumb from dicing onions over the weekend. It'll heal.
I have a little help healing cuts. Coincidentally, it's one of the ingredients in my turkey roulade.
Better than vajaja sourdouchE...uh SOURDOUGH
It's worse if it happens while you're boning a turkey.
Go on...
"Note: I will be publishing daily dispatches from the second half of the Paris climate change conference beginning on December 7th."
Translation: "Among the perks for writing this shit are occasional trips to Paris on an expense account."
Hey, we all have to take one for the team from time to time.
Reason contributions well spent me thinks !
You can breathe a sigh of relief:
"It's OK to spank your kid, court rules"
[...]
"California law authorizes "reasonable methods of parental discipline," which can include "reasonable and age-appropriate spanking to the buttocks," the Second District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles said Tuesday. "
http://www.sfgate.com/news/art.....657693.php
So all you have to do is be willing to fight all the way up the Court of Appeals and you'll be able to spank your misbehaving kid.
And if potential employers ask about your child abuse arrest, explain how it was overturned on appeal and they'll breathe a sigh of relief.
One more link before the orderlies take my computer away:
Apparently, the Democratic National Committee is sponsoring a Web site, yourrepublicanuncle.com -
"The holiday season is filled with food, traveling, and lively discussions with Republican relatives about politics sometimes laced with statements that are just not true. Here are the most common myths spouted by your family members who spend too much time listening to Rush Limbaugh and the perfect response to each of them."
James Taranto checked the Web site so you don't have to.
This year I'm especially thankful that I have lived many years before the sort dismal totalitarian freaks that use that website proliferated and that I will likely be dead before they take over.
Have a nice Paris vacation.
If only the regulars were as skeptical of specious causality with regards to the liberation of Iraq and the rise of ISIS.

The mountains and valleys of little animals killing the children of their neighbors and crunching on the skulls of that fucking pesky tigress family and those bobos up in the trees petting the cocks and vaginas of their youngest and oldest to stop the fucking black monkey eyes, broken bones, and dead bobo people in the tree village and the lioness squatting in her own blood after her pussy was ripped out by 14 thug hyenas and then all 14 hyenas had their heads ripped off by 5 lions and then the earth slipped into the past and larger fucker ate, fucked, petted, and did crazy shit, and yet the earth still slips deeper, and eating, fucking, petting, and crazy gets darker, larger, and way fucking more complicated scientifically...
So we have today and all these shitty humans and their bibles and torahs and korans and Gomorrah and lost golgothas and unbending philosophies.... along with their nuclear bombs and mad scientists who are so goddamn elites at the tables in the best restaurants right?
yea, fuck yeah, praise science animals for their science of mayhem.... earth will be turned into massive sweet bush because humans are fantastic!!
praise humans. they are better than hamster before we arrived? With our Harvards, Princetons, and old school physic empires?
Lions never had nuclear bombs. Gerbils never had machine guns. And lamas never had bibles and korans.
Frogs don't have battleships. Siberian tigers don't have gulags and Syrian owls don't appreciate your dick ass fucking bullshit bombs fucking their hallowed enterprises up, bitch ass fucks.
I love owls. Owls are the mystical surprise of the forest, desert, jungle, song, sex bed, and woods.
Killing millions of humans all the time has never achieved a single psychotic objective. Devastation makes for the tombs of desserts enjoyed by not a single living tongue. The falling jungles of despair should have trained our greatest minds to abandon such infinite objections ... cuz the sun drips very fiercely on a nuclearized orb and all those two-legged dumbshits who don't live very long anyway... well, this isn't a horse-drawn race to mass death, boys... a wasteland might be fun to play on Bethseda's playground for the mind but the real is the melting of our orbit, sweet puppies.
love god, man. People search for god like their fav team in the Superbowl. Fucking prepare the goddamn table or tailgate for the goddamn assorted people who run balls for billions of dollops and shit and sweet fucking boobie scraw... our dude won a ton of fucking notierity on the tubes that sell tons of car insurance and drugs and shit. I say go fucking Mars team!!
Trailer park planets make for safe bloated floating crap in space that no super enlarged IQ can kill with its bombs.
Fucking planets with goddamn billion year old bacteria families living on them are under-rated. Fucking goddamn low-lives are spinning billions of years without all the bullshit our fucking anxious, bomb-building, drone-shooting, 'geniuses' are are envisioning for all the rest of us anxious, fucked-up, drugged-up, drone-fearing, genius-running from rest of us....
Humans are fucking awful when they are awesome and as intelligent as a space rock.
Turkeys are like roaches. After the goddamn 'smarties' kill the fucking planet with their family raping political missiles filled with atomic parties.... and this shit glows like my favorite girlfriends pussy after I fuck her with my cum after tons of booze and drugs... all the humans die and turkeys will emerge and eat roaches because giving thanks is awesome even after all those filthy dummies in higher ed got their way.
"finalize the details of a universal climate agreement with the aim of keeping future global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius of the pre-industrial average."
How much is two degrees of the pre-industrial average?
You cosmotarians best not let the sun set on your ass in Harris County, Georgia
I'll believe Climate "Science" has some utility when it can explain the Maunder Minimum. And when the next 100,000 year glaciation is due.
So Ron.
How about an article on what the ideal global average temperature should be. And another article on what is required to achieve that.
The ideal global temperature is a lot warmer than this. And getting there simply requires burning more fossil fuel.
I think Kent Brockman had it right on the Simpsons, 70 degree winters.
It is stunning to me that anyone is still discussing this. The warmistas have about as much credibility as the goddamn Moonies.
Obumbles publicly and shamelessly tasked NASA, NOAA and other agencies with political agendas. In other words he told them to ditch science and get with the narrative.
It is an obvious con. Give 'em the finger and tell them to fuck off.
it's rapidly getting to the point where getting rid of the statists would be killing about 47 birds with one stone.
Good. Let's keep going until we are out of the current ice age. That will take a lot more time and fossil fuel.
