Students Say They Want Cheap (or Free) College, Then Make Demands That Drive Up Costs
Somebody should picket for mandatory economics classes.

Students want college to be free! And they want to have their debt forgiven! And they want a $15 minimum wage for campus workers! Um … what?
That contradictory final demand was part of the so-called Million Student March. The march, despite having the veneer of being about education costs, was actually put together by labor interests pushing their minimum wage goals and using college students as some sort of bridge. Beth Huang, coordinator for the Student Labor Action Project (SLAP), told the Washington Post, "The problems of skyrocketing college costs and low wages are linked together and result in poor economic mobility for people who graduate with the burden of student debt."
Well, no, but thanks for the buzzword salad. The problems of skyrocketing college costs are linked, actually, to the high wages and numbers of non-educational college staff—the bloat in administrators and non-educational services being provided by colleges these days. And increasing the minimum wage for low-level staff will drive the price of college up even further.
Amid the Yale Protests about minority treatment and disenfranchisement, there's plenty of signs that students just absolutely don't get it. They do not understand why college prices are so high and are loudly demanding Yale provide more stuff that will make the college even more expensive and even harder for some students to access. A group of Yale students called Next Yale marched up to President Peter Salovey's home last night with a list of demands. They require Yale to spend more money and hire more people to implement. Among them:
- "Mental health professionals" permanently established at the college's four cultural centers
- Budget increases ($2 million each) for each cultural center
- Stipends for food and access to residential college kitchens during breaks
- Dental and optometry insurance as part of the college's basic health plan
- Eight additional financial aid consultants for international and undocumented students
But the economics of "free" are simply beyond the grasp of many of these college students. Neil Cavuto of Fox Business Network found out first hand trying to interview one of the Million Student March organizers. When asked how to pay for all this stuff, the answer always comes down to "Make the one percent pay!" When Cavuto points out that people want the one percent to pay for everything, but even the one percent have a limited amount of money (and not enough for this), her actual response is that there's always going to be a one percent. It's unclear whether she realizes that she's saying that once she's milked the "one percent," they'll just move down to the next group of citizens and start milking them, too. Watch Cavuto's interview below. He's a lot nicer than I am. I would have asked her if she understood that the part of the "one percent" that is responsible for skyrocketing college costs (administration) would be the ones who would profit from this plan:

Shackford, you are treading on Robby's turf with this college stuff, and that is Not Ok.

When Neil asked Keely Mullen at the beginning "What do you want?" she should have responded,
"Well Neil, I would like a brain!
Are...are we in the end times? Because I thought we couldn't ever reach PEAK RETARD, but...I feel like we're getting close. Are cats and dogs living together yet? We certainly have the mass hysteria part down with U of M.
You never reach peak retard. You can only get halfway closer to it than you were before.

The phenomenon is known as Zeno's Retard.
I feel like a Thompson Twins song is called for at this point.

I was actually thinking "Lies" but any will do.
Perhaps Doctor Doctor, as long as someone else is picking up the check.
Single payer "Doctor Doctor"?
You ALWAYS feel that way, though. Your parties are just the worst.
He wouldn't know. He spends the whole time in the bathroom doing cocaine.
Don't blame me just because you don't like XTC songs!
I got nothing against XTC. It's the arrhythmic gyrations that you call "dancing" that gets to me.
Also, seriously, "Greenman" is not a party anthem, and does not need to be played six times in a row EVER.
Would you prefer Generals and Majors, then?

"King for a Day" or GTFO.
You know, X, I would have figured you for more of a Mayor of Simpleton.
No offense, but you strike me as a "Mayor of Simpleton" kind of guy.

Everybody got burned on that exchange.
Well now I'm freaked out.

yeah but if you have a penis, then eventually you're close enough for practical purposes.
Cats and dogs have been shacking up for awhile now. Where ya been?!
Enough of your Borax, poindexter! Is repealing the law of supply & demand really so much to ask?
Hey pal, did you get a load of the nerd?
Anybody who go into Yale and is swimming in college debt has no one but themselves to blame. If you can be admitted to an Ivy you can be admitted to a lower tier school with near a full scholarship. Honestly, the lack of forethought points to these kids really not being Ivy league material.
What does merit have to do with diversity? Racist.
See, i disagree. I think that the lack of forethought is EXACTLY what I expect from the Ivy League. I am only disappointed that so many other schools have fallen to their level.
^THIS^ Lack of forethought combined with a petulant, self entitled, holier than though attitude? Totally Ivy League material.
Illocust-
Exactly. That's what I did. I was accepted to Yale, but took a full scholarship to TCU instead. Of course, I'm apparently smarter than the average Yalie, so...
The Ivies aren't about education anyway, they're about networking. Since I didn't want to work for government, Yale wasn't of THAT much value.
I go to conferences to network.
Publish a few things, meet people at conferences, go home and sell them stuff.
What? You're saying that giving "undocumented students" free stuff won't magically pay for itself?
Something something multiplier
I hoped these spoiled, sniveling, snot-nosed brats suffer decades of despair and anxiety trying to pay off their massive student loan debts. They can't be saved. It's too late. They're only value is setting an example for the next generation.
I have my doubts that the spawn of someone who can only get paid to sling coffee around at Starbucks and complain about the unfairness of capitalism while her master's in Womyn's Studies gathers dust in a drawer will grow up to be a worthwhile contributor to society.

It could be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others.
I made it about five seconds into he talking and knew all I needed to know.
You should finish it, she's a gem and Neil Cavuto actually does a pretty good job of putting her in her place. She still doesn't admit that she may possibly be wrong about her assumptions and talking points but she is left a little speechless.
God those stupid red squares. They know damn well what that means.
I saw that stupid shit here in Montreal during our own student protest madness.
Ah, Montreal student protests, good times. Where the kids riot because tuition went up to $3,000.
Media coverage of these things is always a hoot. Like when there are riots in Britain and I'm told that cuts to tuition subsidies and public services are being protested by "anarchists".
I left Quebec just before that insanity happened, and now it's spreading out.
Maybe this won't be popular, but I felt bad for that girl. Maybe it's because I have a daughter her age.
You could tell that she was convinced her ideas were right, which of course they aren't. But, she didn't come off as the smart ass, in your face kind of punk we sometimes see. She was trying to argue in good faith and to respectfully answer Cavuto's questions. She came up with about as good an answer as you could to each question given that she was defending such stupid ideas. But she was trying and she was earnest.
It was obvious that Cavuto was just toying with her, and being pretty aggressive with interrupting her while she was trying to answer. His tone really irritated me.
I don't know. I guess it's the dad in me.
She deserves it. Might actually learn something in the process.
...something about honey and vinegar...
I'll spare a tear for Cavuto's tone and shed for the victims of her earnest, honest fascism. "There will always be a 1%". Jesus Christ. These children think of other people as their personal piggy banks to be cracked open on demand. I don't give a fuck about tone.
Ironic 😉
Y'all are right, of course. But there was something about her that inhibited my normal desire to jump through my computer screen and strangle the stupid arrogant fuckstick they normally have on these segments.
... there was something about her that inhibited my normal desire to jump through my computer screen and strangle the stupid arrogant fuckstick they normally have on these segments.
Probably the fact that she wasn't dog ugly. Admit it, you just wanted to bang her, you cis-hetero male shitlord!
You know, like when a villain the hero is trying to kill finally descends into such an utterly pitiful state that the hero starts trying to save him instead of kill him.
However, usually when that happens, the villain ends up taking advantage of the hero's stupid naivete and kills him.
No, usually the hero is trying to save the villain, because heroes don't kill, but then the villain tries to pull some scorpion and frog shit, and ends up only killing himself.
I don't feel sorry for her at all....she's too stupid to tie her own shoes, much less attend college.
Yes, Cavuto was toying with her. And you can tell by that look on here face that she realized she was in way over her head.
Unfortunately, you have to look at her face to get that sense.
Well, one has to make sacrifices now and then.
And think of how the movement will treat her once they found out she was interviewed on Fox.
10' poles and all that.
Well, just like the sacrifice she had to make by going into the enemy's camp, you should also be commended.
Make a cocktail for yourself and get a hot bath/shower to clean off.
--Yes, Cavuto was toying with her. And you can tell by that look on here face that she realized she was in way over her head.
To be fair, that does make her better than the average student activist type who usually shows up in the media. Most of them would have walked away from the interview smugly, thinking 'I sure told that Cavuto guy' while his brains were dripping away behind him.
I don't really think Cavuto was toying with her...I think he actually felt bad that she was, earnestly, trying to provide honest answers to his questions and recognized that she believed what he said (even though her positions were completely idiotic and childish). I think he was gently trying to lead her to thinking about what she was saying. He didn't really go for a killshot on any of his follow-up questions, and I suspect it's because he recognized if he had she would have burst into tears because she seemed to realize how far out of her depth she was.
Personally, I think Cavuto did it the right way. And I'll hand this to the girl...she was honest about her beliefs. Most of these little pricks will sit there and just duck the question or go to ad hominems. She actually tried to answer his questions, she just didn't realize how indefensible her positions were once you looked past the intentions.
I'm paying 50% of my (and my wife's) income in taxes of one form or another - and no we're not "rich" even in the Obama 2007 sense . It's people like this girl, naive and earnest as she is, that see this level of assessment on my labor as "a good start". I can't afford to be nice at this point. If she wants more free shit, she's going to have to take it up with the long line of parasites already eating my ass. And if I'm impatient with this ilk, too fucking bad. There's about 10% buffer on the level I'm going to have looted from me before I start reaching for the hardware.
But she was trying and she was earnest.
I'm pretty sure it's the derp in you. Perhaps if she was taught that sincerity isn't a substitute for effort when she was a child she wouldn't come off like the goddamned moron she is as an adult. Her stupidity trumps her self esteem.
I look at it this way with earnestness...when you have someone who is intellectually honest, but wrong, then you have someone you can convince if you make a better argument and don't make it personal.
I don't think she was stupid, just young and naive, and she got a rude awakening on national TV about just how little she understands about these subjects she's discussing. Hopefully that will be a wakeup call for her. Maybe not, but if she does take a look in the mirror and ask herself if maybe, just maybe, she's the one operating from a position of ignorance, she might be salvageable.
Yes, that's it! You have explained (here and above) why I had sympathy for her.
I generally agree. I have no problem with other people being wrong (about most things) but I can't tolerate bad faith arguments.
I'll reserve my sympathy for someone who isn't trying to cram her paw into my wallet, while insulting me and trying to stuff a sock in my mouth.
Sorry, sweetie. You may be a nice person under all the cant and garbage that you have stuffed your skull with, but you picked a side, and its a side I will piss on every chance I get.
No, she's an idiot on a pedestal. The appropriate response is for someone to walk up, gently remove the microphone, and walk her to the back where the adults explain how they're sorry life isn't fair but we all have to pay for our own stuff.
As it is she's far worse than a smartass, she garners sympathy and currently has her stupid little brain locked up and defended by the feels police (who seem to be real police at this point).
But they're experts at the politics of "free".
If we stamp our feet and whine enough we'll get the free shit we deserve because the mean old 1% stole all our money through wage theft!
Yes, they genuinely think they deserve all the free shit they can get.
Which is why they're so loathsome. They're nearly as intellectually bankrupt as they are morally bankrupt.
Pray to SMOD.
We are doomed
And we like it
Ponys!
Although I am a SMOD 2016 supporter, SMOD is too kind. Only suffering delivered by the evil of Kthulu would be a just outcome.
+1 Great Old Ones.
Somebody should picket for mandatory economics classes.
Yes. And logic.
I have said many times I believe geometry should be mandatory, so students are forced to learn how to construct a proof. Arguments should be based on things which are demonstrably true; not just made up.
Arguments should be based on things which are demonstrably true; not just made up.

What about the Parallel Postulate?
Seriously -- Right on, P.
"But thinking is *hard*!"
Is geometry no longer required in high school? Back when I went to high school, even the slowest course track (as opposed to the AP course track) required geometry.
Side-Angle-Side has white privilege all over it.
CPCTC sounds like a labor union, though
I'm pretty sure high school geometry has taken proofs out of the course. It's too much like mansplaining and therefore offensive.
They don't do proofs and they don't do constructions any more. I'm not sure what they actually do, but I suspect it's mostly calculations of standard areas and volumes. With formula cards of course, can't hurt their brains by making them memorize anything.
Well, to be fair, memorization is a complete waste of time in the age of instant reference. It really is. And it has nothing, quite literally *nothing*, to do with why constructions and proofs are valuable.
Though, as an engineer I take a decidedly Heavisidian view on the necessity of mathematical proofs, and as a logician I find them excessively "rigorous" for practical rhetorical use.
In the high school of my era, I found the proofs in geometry to be a poor substitute for basic schooling in logic and reasoning, especially of the inductive sort, of which we received precisely none. I would say, dispense with the geometric proofs, and teach some damn rhetoric instead.
But then, there is a need to have enough grounding in the basics to know what numbers to PLUG INTO the computer. Remember, computers can only return good results if good information is put into it.
Kinda like freshmen.

Beth Huang, coordinator for the Student Labor Action Project (SLAP), told the Washington Post, "The problems of skyrocketing college costs and low wages are linked together and result in poor economic mobility for people who graduate with the burden of student debt."
That gibberish made me SLAP happy.
I guess she expects college graduates to return as college janitors.
This actually happens sometimes. A sizable amount of college students at Michigan State who worked as student janitors actually applied and got jobs as college janitors after graduating! This could have happened to me, but it didn't.
Holy fuck. It's pretty bad when your university education is worth less than the part-time job you took to help pay for it.
It's hip to need therapy.
I'm not gonna, um, make fun of this girl because that was painful to watch. It's just plain sad how utterly thoughtless they are. Like, absolutely.
Couple of things that stuck out in that interview (besides the 'ums' and 'likes'):
-She believes the '1% are hoarding the wealth'. Savings is now hoarding?
-In response to how much is enough she replies. 'enough until...' what is needed. Does she advocate for confiscation beyond this point? Sounds like she is even if she doesn't realize it.
-'Education is innovation'. No, it isn't honey. Many of the most successful entrepreneurs in the West have no formal education - certainly not in things like 'Bi-transgendered, patriarchless Amazon-African societies'. No disrespect but you don't strike me as someone who will go out an 'innovate'. Mobilizing the free-shit mob isn't innovation.
-She's not working class. She's 'incredibly' working class. Her boyfriend is magnificently middle-class.
-And la piece de resistance: 100% taxation is 'on the way to socialism with a different structure' but 90% is not. Got it.
This is what the system is spitting out.
Million Student March Rep: I want a hamburger. No, cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips...

the '1% are hoarding the wealth
The one percent's wealth is largely invested too, which is just about the opposite of hoarding. Funny how they love to bitch about Capitalism while having no clue at all how it actually works.

THIS IS WHAT KEYNESIANS ACTUALLY BELIEVE!
Yeah the worst part is that she is one of our future "best and brightest" and yet can't see how patently riduculius her ideas are.
Belittling her socioeconomic status is super super problematic. My condolences on being in Montr?al during the student protests.
The advantage to high student debt is that the stupids who incurred it will either have to delay reproduction of forego it altogether.
The colleges/universities are killing the economy that supports them.
Clever boys
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Good one.
You think? They're selfish and self-entitled enough to have kids. After all, poverty doesn't mean less kids are conceived.
Usually it's the opposite.
These kids have standards (of living they are unwilling to forego).
That assumes a level of responsibility and wisdom that someone who chose an unemployable major probably doesn't have.
As if the stupids on welfare stopped reproducing.
We all need to find where our intersectionalities line up in the relative aggrievement triangle so we can figure out who's opinions matter.
The Calvin Ball of the Victim Olympics.
+ a random number I haven't thought of yet
The government money fueled growth in higher education has come with a decline in academic standards. Something like 60% of college students take remedial courses (how embarrassing). The government backed students loans need to be eliminated to remove the perverse financial incentives for the college's to get as many kids in, academic standards be damned. Then the college's can hold their academic standards. Then there won't be a bunch of idiots demanding safe spaces and free stuff wandering around.
College isn't for everyone, it's for smart people who work hard. Saying that everyone should go to college is like saying we should put short people in the NBA so they will get taller.
Saying that everyone should go to college is like saying we should put short people in the NBA so they will get taller.
That is an awesome way to say it.
Indeed. Excellent.
I hope you don't mind if I steal that. It's perfect.
College isn't for everyone, and it's not even for smart people who work hard. Part of the reason we've arrived at a place where free college is being touted as a human right is because all anyone growing up in the 80s and 90s heard was that your options after high school are a.) the military, b.) being a poor, dirty plumber, or c.) going to college for literally anything and then magically making $65k starting.
In my case, I blew damn near 8 years and a ton of money going to college part time for a major in Political Science before realizing that I hate the government and want to build websites (which I currently do). Everything I needed to know I taught myself or learned online. Post-high school education needs to be about more than which four-year school you can get into and how much you can get in Stafford loans.
This girl is Keelyin me.
Well, for God's sake, CJ-don't look directly at her!
Here, make yourself an eclipse a Keely viewer.
Wow, just so painfully stupid.
So, why does a place like Yale want to pander to these little shits? They reject thousands of well qualified applicants every year. Just tell them to fuck off if they don't like what Yale is offering. Plenty of very smart people would be happy to take their places.
D I V E R S I T Y for it's own sake.
I'm sure there are thousands of qualified applicants from diverse racial backgrounds just dying to get into Yale. And there are a plenty of rich white kids participating in the idiocy.
Diversity is the ends, not the means.
Because not having diversity is being means to people.
Because people in charge are these shits from two generations ago, and people below them (who run day-to-day shit) are these shits from one generation ago? Same numbers demanding, say, ROTC front and center on campus, or mandatory investment in Israel would get a far different reception.
So, you're saying that people in the academic professions are immune to learning how dumb they were as kids, unlike everyone else? I guess that seems plausible.
Still makes very little sense to me.
I'm saying when you have negative selection in play (competent academics do research, don't go into administration, and competent administrators go to private sector), you fall into a death spiral.
The academic term is "adverse selection" - in case you want to do a search.
Well, the mis-education runs deep. I was in a planning meeting the other day and one of the issues that came up was the lack of parking on campus. One of my friends said that we really need to develop mass-transit for campus (there's a long backstory to all this that I won't go into here).
One of the other people in our group is the new director of the Sustainability Minor on campus. He told my friend that there was a plan in place that would provide free passes for all students on local buses. After successfully hiding my surprise that we had a Sustainability Minor I asked him who was going to pay for this because it, obviously, couldn't be free. He insisted that, yes, indeed students would be given passes for the school year that wouldn't cost them anything. So I asked him again how this was going to be paid for and he insisted that the students wouldn't incur any costs.
So I finally asked him the question with some prompts i.e., someone was going to have to come up with the money for new buses and hiring new drivers, etc. if this was going to work so was it possible that this might require raising local property taxes? At that point understanding dawned in his eyes and he acknowledged that, yes, someone would have to pay in order to provide free transit for students.
Yes. Sustainability doesn't apparently include fiscal sustainability. You should have asked him if he planned to buy the bus with his own money and drive it himself for free.
You're not just a commentator, you're a teacher!
A gaddamn american hero!
you're saying that people in the academic professions are immune to learning how dumb they were as kids, unlike everyone else?
Unlike everyone else, these fucktards stayed in academia (or government) as opposed to working in the private sector, where they actually expect results.
+1 Larry Summers
Because the Yale faculty and administrators are ideologically close to these students. Of course, they are now inconvenienced because the student mob went too far. In the Soviet Union and China it's the Communists who were purged and sent to re-education camps, anti-Communists were already in exile or dead. It's the same here.
So when does the purge come?
After the paregoric.
Justin Zoolander Trudeau faints.
Free school for the little snowflakes, and a pony. Doesn't every little anguished Ivy League baby deserve a pony? At least they'll learn what horseshit looks and smells like, since they obviously don't know what it sounds like.
Don't most Ivy League kids already have a pony? I think you mean a NEW pony.

A private business announced plans to close, and customers sued (which went all the way to the state Supreme Court) to keep it open?
If they liked it and wanted it open so bad, they should have pooled their money and bought the place.
What's with the pretense that these demands are contradictory? They want no cost at point of service for themselves, and high wages for staff, because that's morally right. Government's job is to see that enough money shows up in the instutitions' accounts.
Look up "Single Payer Healthcare". You can think it's immoral, inefficient, doomed to fail, whatever, but contradictory, confused or not throught-through it ain't.
It's just good old cradle-to-grave welfare state. There's nothing special or new or unusal about applying it to universites.
What's with the pretense that these demands are contradictory?
The demands are, indeed, all consistent with one another once you realize that the money to pay for their tuition, to forgive their debts, and to pay the minimum wage will all come from taxpayers.
All of it. Every single nickel. No contradiction at all.
We need get that money from under the mattress that the 1% are hoarding.
But I do empathize with her about the wild wealth distribution. When Facebook has more money from making a fancy web site than General Electric something is askew. GE is trying to put its feet on the ground with advertisements that assert that GE is great place for an aspiring automation programmer to work. GE has a stupid vertical business model. If you buy a lightbulb from GE you are supposed to buy the whole factory from them too. GE has no concept of being best-in-class about its products. It is not such a great a place for a programmer to work. It could be and should be, but the vertical model has to go in the dumpster.
When Facebook has more money from making a fancy web site than General Electric something is askew.
Really? Why? Facebook allows people with shared interests to communicate and share information with each other from all around the world. It allows family members to stay in touch in a way that was not possible before. It's pretty amazing. It's so amazing that I closed my account. I'm not that social. But my wife loves it.
The problem with Facebook and all social networking is that it's an idea more than a product.
And despite my track history of making fun of social networking, I'm not actually making fun of it here, I'm trying to be as neutral as possible.
Trying to make money in the social networking business is tricky. This week you're Facebook, next week you're MySpace, the week after that you're friendster.
Facebook by some metrics is already on its way out, so as a company if Facebook sticks to the 'product' of Facebook, they're doomed. They have to keep producing new ideas, and if they can't do that, their only option is to be a 'holding company' of ideas-- and be big enough to buy the next social networking paradigm, especially considering that once they become bureaucratic and large, they won't have the insight or talent to create the Next Big Thing in social networking.
Those pajama-boy programmer commercials make me want to put my fist through the television.
You don't seem to like TV ads much.
TV ads need to get the hell off Rhywun's lawn.
If you've seen this one, you know what I mean.
It's not Kars-for-Kids obnoxious, but it's up there.
Once you realize Kars For Kids is a Hasidim organization, the obnoxiousness makes sense.
I love how she simply cannot believe that the "1%" may not even have the resources necessary to fund her pie in the sky wants even if they sat still and let themselves be robbed blind.
I took the Forbes list of the top 400 richest people in America, added up their reported wealth in the article, and divided by the population of the US. It translated into $9,000 per person. These people just don't get that there simply isn't a cornucopia of goods and services just waiting to be distributed if it weren't for those cruel white males standing guard.
It translated into $9,000 per person.
These proto-fascists aren't planning on sharing it with everybody. It will all be used by them, for them.
Spread it out among the college students who pass the purity tests, and there's probably plenty. For a year or so.
This. "The People" will never see a cent of the $9000. What will happen is the distributors will enjoy high-paying jobs, fancy digs, big budgets and an unbridled power to choose winners and losers of the windfalls.
It doesn't help that she's getting other basic stats wrong. She starts off by claiming that 1% of the population owns more wealth the 99% combined. If the population she's talking about is the US, then she's laughably wrong. The 1% own about 37% of the wealth. More likely she's talking about the global population, based on that messed up Oxfam study from a couple years back. Even Vox called bull on that one.
I heard a female college student interviewed on the radio news who said that we had to stop sending more than half of our money overseas in the form of military spending and foreign aid, so that we could help more people at home.
The statement was not corrected.
Maybe she had confused discretionary spending (of which those two total 57%) with total spending (17%)
Students want college to be free! And they want to have their debt forgiven! And they want a $15 minimum wage for campus workers! Um ? what?
Yeah, I can tell you the demand for a $15 minimum wage for campus workers is probably the LEAST cost-increasing policy that the students support.
The real driver in costs for universities is without a doubt, the massive subsidy money faucet to which universities, students and the loan system are hooked.
If the government subsidized iPhones the way they subsidized college, iPhones would be $12,000 a piece give you all the bang for your buck that a French Literature and Art History double major provides.
I suspect that French Literature and Art History double majors provide excellent bang for the buck, most other career options being closed to them.
She actually did better (I know its hard to imagine) at defending her positions than the moronic legions taking up valuable global bandwith with their asinine their #FeeltheBern memes on the ol Facebook.
Facebook... how quaint.
I couldn't watch more than 2 minutes.
You got two minutes more than I did.
It was horrible.
This is their "best" spokesperson?
Unlike the misinformed-idiocy of Jesse Myerson, the Bard Communist... she actually seemed somehow aware that there was mountains of stuff she didn't *actually know anything about*, but felt comfortable speculating on...
...i mean, even the first question, "Who's going to pay for that" seemed to catch her unprepared, and seeming a little angry that anyone would expect her to have considered the details of public-education financing.
I'd make a bet that she remains unaware to this moment of how her High School education was paid for... just that it was "Free!".
She would likely make the same scrunched brow when explained that "property taxes" paid for HS, and that the reason her parents were moving now that she was out of the house was because that shit was unbelievably expensive.
You think her parents haven't already realized that she'll be moving back in after she graduates?
As Big Timmeh Cavanaugh once wrote, "The hard-won wisdom of a college junior..."
If these students actually get what they are demanding, the brunt of the costs to the taxpayers are going to come back and hit them right in the wallet at exactly the time in their lives when they will be struggling most for money--their late 20s to early 30s, when they are still too early in their careers to be making much but when they've just started families and bought houses (unless the downward trend in first-time home ownership and delaying trend in marriages gets worse).
They'll deserve getting hit by their own boomerang largesse.
I already made that point. In fewer words up thread.
Yeah but they're not gonna see that point. That's the problem.
...and it will hit them even harder once they reach their top earning years (in their 40's and 50's) because there will have been two even more derptastic decades mixed in. She'll never be able to get ahead, while the 1% already have theirs. All she's REALLY advocating is fixing the 1% in position forever (sort of like it was in the first half of the 20th century before Kennedy and then Reagan lowered marginal rates).
The girls says
referring to the evil rich. She's of course not intending to be so ironic. No self awareness whatsoever.
You're not implying that this snowflake - so far in her life - has been nothing but a resource depleting shit-maker, are you?
She may be telling the God's honest truth. She's a college student, so when she "looks around her", who and what do you think she sees?
I look around me and I see there's a population that's doing nothing to contribute to the progression of society
"That's a mirror. You're seeing your own reflection."
Pure evil. I want free shit, and someone else to pay for it under threat of violence, because somehow I deserve it.
Exactly. If she were German she would have voted for Hitler. The 1% = "the Jews".
I bet there's a revealing piece to be written, comparing Nazi screeds against the Jews with proggy screeds against the 1%.
I hope it comes complete with the observation that the current viewpoint is "nuanced". Nuance being the defense shield for clarity and logic.
Remember that quiz called "Al Gore or the Unabomber", where you were presented with statements about global warming and you had to guess which one said it?
I bet you could very easily make one comparing statements from Hitler to those made by Bernie Sanders or Liz Warren.
Oh, the anti-Semitism of the Nazis was clearly rooted in their anti-capitalism and the stereotype of the "Jewish banker". However, if you try to make that point to a progressive, they'll simply interpret it as "the 1%" playing "the victim card".
See this for example: http://tinyurl.com/pdrcckc
I immediately thought of this. Except that guy's probably way more masculine than any of the members of that organization. I suspect even their women have vaginas.
*even their men have vaginas.
Their women probably have clitdongs.
Like hyenas? How apropos.
Im making over $9k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do,

Where are the wealthy people (the ones that would ostensibly be affected by this "plan") that are ready to tell her she can cram it with walnuts?
Seriously, high earners need to confront these dopes and tell them that they have no say-so over the resources of others.
she can cram it with walnuts
Your comments are othering to persons with tree-nut allergies, shitlord!
:sniff: That's the first shitlord treatment I've ever received here. I'm so happy!!
Probably some of their own parents are among the top 1% of earners. Everyone thinks "the rich" is somebody else.
The truly wealthy (1%) already have theirs. These taxes will just help keep the vulgar nouveau-riche out of their yacht and country clubs. The high earners are mostly busy working and not paying that much attention.
One memo to these students: don't follow the ones who did the ill-fated "Maple Spring" with the red square and all in Quebec in 2012.
Here's Ted Cruz's plan to "stop illegal immigration, secure the border, restore the rule of law, and protect Americans."
Why did Polk stop halfway?
Stupid tabs.
We Dissent.
Of course, only white men penned this editorial.
Goddammit. This was supposed to go in the links. I guess it works here, too.
Best comment ever:
"There is no 'real world' for these kids, and that's the sad truth.
Their lives will consist of academia, activist nonprofits, the blogosphere, and government bureaucracy. We've created a system in which a certain class of students can live a comfortable life without ever encountering what anyone outside of their bubble would consider the 'real world'.
It's a malignant feedback loop which insures their positions become hardened, protected, and insulated from all dissent; more so with each cycle. And so every year the demands get more outlandish, the shrieks more hysterical, and the distance between reality and their own version of it ever wider.
They bought themselves a life of extreme privilege by convincing themselves of how oppressed they are."
The one certain result of throwing money at a problem is that the problem will become more expensive.
These students should be protesting Obama's wars of choice. Or would that be racist?
That girl was beauty-pageant vapid. Maybe she should protest in a bikini or evening dress?
In keeping with the timbre of Reason.com, this post offers perfect ridicule without offering constructive criticism. Indeed, demanding the right, or privilege, to suck from the teat of a dysfunctional economic order is not the best idea, though this is a movement that exists in its infancy. The simple truth is that the current system of financing higher education is falling apart because of the untenable financial burdens placed on debtors, as well as for the lack of principle of higher education. Some schools are already responding by offering free access to education, namely Stanford, MIT, and another liberal arts school in Ohio whose name I do not recall. That said, students could and should go a long way in understanding how they could work to transform the nature and economy of education, higher ed in particular. Insofar as the bloated salaries of administrators and non integral staff, I surmise that some of of those positions could be eliminated for the purpose of higher wages for "low level," though absolutely necessary work(ers). Rest assured, these students protesters aren't the only ones in need of an economics lesson. The masterminds behind the student loan debt scam for the past 40 years are the ones who clearly prove that economics is a dismal science, in addition to be a behavioral science. Things change, especially when they must.
this is a movement that exists in its infancy
A more compelling argument for abortion may never have been made.
Mr Shackford: I believe Mr Caputo did hint that this group's proposals would be exploited by college administrators. Right at the end, he said something like, all of this new money would just lead to a more bloated college administration.
I think we should re-assign a portion of the 1% to provide turn-down service for dorm residents, then convert the remaining rich folk directly into food, as a supplement to student meal plans. We build the first processing center on the Missou campus, and have the rich report there with hoagie rolls and condiments.
From the greatest generation to the stupidest generation in less than a century. Great job USA. The vocal college students: narcissistic little snots, multi-culturally racist and virtually unemployable.
I make $9000 a month working from home. But thanks to a 90% tax rate, I'm also on food stamps. Most of my money goes to vacuous mid-western kids to fund their sad attempts at undergrads in Psychology. But I also have free health care, so I guess that's a plus.
