Brickbat: Shameless

Officials at West Side High School in Dayton, Idaho, suspended Evette Reay just 30 minutes before the end of her senior year. A teacher found that the dress Reay wore that day did not touch her knee cap as required by the dress code. In fact, Reay admits, it might have been an inch or even two above her knee. Principal Tyler Telford told Yahoo Parenting he couldn't discuss the specifics of the case. But he said "the best thing a parent can do for their child is support a teacher and the school."

The students at West Side are going to have a great story to tell about this one.
Good morning sluts.
Nice.
*polite applause*
By becoming the teacher and the school.
"The best thing a [citizen] can do is [to abandon his rights and submit to authority.]"
Ignore the part of the handbook that says the punishment for non-compliant clothing is the parent brings another set or the school provides sweatpants/sweatshirt! Just focus on the first part!
Why the fuck would a lowly teacher have any power beyond sending the student to the principal's office? Or threaten to withhold a diploma? And why did this happen in the afternoon after she had been at school all morning? No other teacher noticed the unacceptable dress?

Why the fuck would a lowly teacher have any power beyond sending the student to the principal's office?
Because fuck you that's why.
"Reay says the teacher threatened to withhold her diploma for insubordination. 'I think in the moment he thought he could use his power to intimidate me,' she says. After a call to the principal, Reay was suspended and told to leave school grounds immediately. She had to return on Monday, after the school year was over, to wrap up end-of-year procedures.
Reay says her mother picked her up at school and tried to discuss the suspension with the principal. 'The teacher told the principal that I had gotten in his face and yelled at him but we were at least four feet apart the entire conversation,' Reay says. 'I was told, "you are suspended, goodbye." I had no time to tell my side of the story."
Intimidation.
Power.
Authority.
"...the best thing a parent can do for their child is support a teacher and the school." Because we know what's best for the children.
Honestly young Ms. Reay, it's For Your Total Wellbeing.
'The teacher told the principal that I had gotten in his face and yelled at him but we were at least four feet apart the entire conversation,' Reay says
So, will she end up going to college at Georgetown, UVA, or Oberlin?
She seems to have a fairly strong character to me, Marshall, given that she has no regrets and would wear the dress to spite the "slavers" again.
With regards to her plans for college: "Reay graduated with her class on Wednesday evening and will attend Idaho State University, where she was accepted into the honors program, next year."
Perhaps her teacher had a problem with her in part due to envy. As straffinrun hinted at earlier, some teachers (consciously or unconsciously) resent students whom they perceive as more capable than themselves. I know I had that experience more than once while navigating public schools.
She seems to have a fairly strong character to me, Marshall, given that she has no regrets and would wear the dress to spite the "slavers" again.
So it is character and not entitlement? How can you tell?
I cannot. It's just the sense I get from the other article.
Perhaps I am projecting as well: her remarks are similar to some of my own following heavy-handed interactions with authoritarian types in public schools.
Teacher-Parent meetings were not unheard of....
OBEY!
That is the money line, isn't it. Today we had parent teacher meetings for the first time since my daughter started elementary school (Japan starts in April). The teacher told me in a solemn voice that my daughter seemed "slow". "What do you mean 'slow'"? "Well, when I tell the class to get their books out or to finish eating she is usually the last one to do it". When I say jump, you say how high. It's funny because my daughter's Japanese is native level and her English is already better than the teacher's. It's a mystery to the teacher that a 6 year who is better than her in a subject she teaches doesn't listen to her.
Get ready for a long-year of solemn concerns.
"the best thing a parent can do for their child is support a teacher and the school."
I love that. 'Support us even when we do moronic things to your kids!'
Priceless.
They left off "support our religion", because this was Idaho, the second most Mormonized state, and the dress standard they were enforcing was the Mormon dress standard.
How can you spot a cheerleader at a BYU football game? She's grazing.
"the best thing a parent can do for their child is support a teacher and the school."
Supporting the school *against* your own child? Over chickenshit? Do these people ever listen to what they say?
If they had that ability, they wouldn't be in education.
If you don't fucking like the public indoctrination center's policies, don't send your fucking children to them. If you go ahead and get into bed with government for the "education" of your children, you deserve to get fucked.
"I am stealing a fortune from my neighbors but I don't like the way they are giving me the money"
Good.
Don't send your children to them and don't support trying to reform them. Just...keep funding the through your tax dollars, right?
I won't send my little ones to a public school, but I will not stop trying to reform them into a place that educates rather than indoctrinates. To do so would be a disservice to the kids whose parents can't afford to homeschool or send them to a private school.
^ Best course of action ^
don't support trying to reform them
Did anything in this article have anything to do with reforming education? I thought it was all about a precious snowflake who shouldn't have to follow the rules.
I do not support "education" "reform". Coerced funding is evil. Coerced attendance is evil. Kill it with fucking fire.
Bastiat said something like "a government monopoly on education is a government monopoly on knowledge". The endless stories here of college graduated people who are as ignorant as can be being a great example. The current state of "climate science" being another just off the top of my head.
Public schools are going away sometime after heroin is sold in vending machines at elementary schools. I'm not saying you should feel obliged to try to reform it, but don't pretend that getting rid of it is really on the table.
At some point, any school has to set some standards for how students dress, and they're guaranteed to be completely arbitrary. You can't simply remove any standard because there will always be that one kid whose parents send her to school dressed like a stripper.
Unless there's some other policy that would actually work, you can't really fault the school for it.
You can fault the school for suddenly deciding to enforce it in a manner inconsistant with its own guidelines, thirty minutes before end of school year, then continuing to behave like braying jackasses.
God forbid using discretion and common sense. Is this Tulpa?
Not everyone that loves the taste of authority cock is Tulpa. In fact, if it was only one lone idiot sucking the world wouldn't be such a shithole.
Has to?
Back in my day, in the dark ages, girls routinely wore skirts that ended, maybe, an inch below the crotch. Is it any wonder I was a total flunky in high school? Beverly Stone's legs in chemistry class - oh my God, how could anybody pay any attention to quadratic equations?
Same here, except it was Sharon Ely, tits, and a tube top. But I can honesty say that even after they sent her home to get something to cover those puppies up, I didn't pay any more attention to the class material. So, a failed policy.
In fact, Reay admits, it might have been an inch or even two above her knee.
Whore! Burn the whore!
*lights torch, hands to SF*
Sounds like she's well hung.
At least put her in a burka. Men can't be expected to control their dirty thoughts.
"Men can't be expected to control their dirty thoughts."
According to the Times article for which you provided a link (below), this is correct.
The article and its own links were very revealing. Thanks JB.
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the teacher and student had had some history of disagreements culminating in this confrontation. It doesn't excuse the teacher's and principal's petty authoritarianism but I wouldn't be surprised if the student had tried to flex a little senior muscle and got smacked down for it.
A skirt an inch above the knee is "flexing senior muscle"?
You might want to revisit that thought. If she had come in something more suited for the Tilted Kilt, perhaps. but this...?
No, I mean that once challenged on the skirt she may have become more confrontational than usual due to a mild case of senioritis. I've seen it happen among my friends in high school. We were mostly bookish and relatively quiet, if quietly rebellious, but near the end of our senior year we became a bit more rambunctious.
I was sent home the laat day of school for smelling like bourbon in the morning. That's all that happened. Graduated with my class. Was stoned at graduation too:)
On the last day before graduation, I'd say senioritis should just be tolerated (within reason). On my last day of high school the seniors pretty much did what they felt like. They are done. It's just petty and bitchy to enforce some silly, minor rules on them.
We parked our cars to spell out "FUCK [principal's name]" one day during our last week.
The joke being that your principal arrived via helicopter.
She was asking for it. /rape culture
Looks like someone beat me to it

I hate this stupid shit. Of course girls get screwed over more with dress codes. Have you ever been to a department store? There's always a little section for guys, a slightly bigger section for kids, and the rest of the goddamn place is brimming with women's clothing. Handbags, skirts, blouses, short shorts, mini-skirts, shit tons of different shoes, all kinds of perfume and jewelry, you name it.
For whatever reason, women tend to like clothes more then men, so designers and store owners cater to those desires, hence giving women more options in the fashion department. So when you limit the amount of allowed clothing to narrow and specific lists/guidelines, it will impact women's choices more, simply because they have more choices to begin with. Dress codes are still petty authoritarian nonsense, but hate them for that instead of hating them for dumb reasons and drinking the Kool-Ade of stupidity. But alas, this is the rape culture panic so these people are practically drowning in the shit.
Dude, I totally agree. Yoga pants and leggings as real pants? Fuck yes! I can't wait until fashion dictates that the hot chicks should wear translucent, minimal coverage thongs, and nothing else, as lower garments. I mean, they'll probably still get paired with something as retarded as Ugg boots, but whatever.

I take it you were out of town for the weekend
A flight instructor at purgatory was telling a story on Sunday morning about how he an a student flew into Burke Lakefront on Saturday and almost got stuck in the riot walking to a restaurant for lunch.
I was indeed, JB.
In general, this is a perfectly good rule, but they never got around enforcing it until 30 minutes before the end of the year? I mean, were they thinking, "this girl will be out of our hair in half an hour, but let's choose this time to mess with her over a violation which we probably should have noticed much earlier, like at the beginning of the year."
Unless she just started violating the dress code on the last day of school, in which case, again, that argues for a bit of slack. Just my 2 cents.
She got to home early last day of school and still graduated with her class. I bet she was enjoying every second of it. Now she's a martyr. Not that I'm taking the schools side but seriously.
OK, then, it's a fairly minor incident, and I don't like the instant martyrdom narratives these students and their parents spin, but that doesn't make the school administrators intelligent.
Although I believe in proper dress for males and females I think schools are becoming more like indoctrination camps so students will fit into our over regulated society. I am so glad I am a baby boomer. I had relative freedom as a youth. A good job market to taise my family and what appears to be an ok retirement. And before I here you whiners cry about about how us baby boomers screwed everything up our votes didn't matter anymore than yours. Also some of us had the guts to stand up as Libertarians instead of meekly being led like lambs to the slaughter.
""the best thing a parent can do for their child is support a teacher and the school."
didn't the catholic church have a similar party line? i seem to remember some problems emerging.
