Officials at West Side High School in Dayton, Idaho, suspended Evette Reay just 30 minutes before the end of her senior year. A teacher found that the dress Reay wore that day did not touch her knee cap as required by the dress code. In fact, Reay admits, it might have been an inch or even two above her knee. Principal Tyler Telford told Yahoo Parenting he couldn't discuss the specifics of the case. But he said "the best thing a parent can do for their child is support a teacher and the school."

With regards to her plans for college: "Reay graduated with her class on Wednesday evening and will attend Idaho State University, where she was accepted into the honors program, next year."

Perhaps her teacher had a problem with her in part due to envy. As straffinrun hinted at earlier, some teachers (consciously or unconsciously) resent students whom they perceive as more capable than themselves. I know I had that experience more than once while navigating public schools.

That is the money line, isn't it. Today we had parent teacher meetings for the first time since my daughter started elementary school (Japan starts in April). The teacher told me in a solemn voice that my daughter seemed "slow". "What do you mean 'slow'"? "Well, when I tell the class to get their books out or to finish eating she is usually the last one to do it". When I say jump, you say how high. It's funny because my daughter's Japanese is native level and her English is already better than the teacher's. It's a mystery to the teacher that a 6 year who is better than her in a subject she teaches doesn't listen to her.

I won't send my little ones to a public school, but I will not stop trying to reform them into a place that educates rather than indoctrinates. To do so would be a disservice to the kids whose parents can't afford to homeschool or send them to a private school.

At some point, any school has to set some standards for how students dress, and they're guaranteed to be completely arbitrary. You can't simply remove any standard because there will always be that one kid whose parents send her to school dressed like a stripper.

Unless there's some other policy that would actually work, you can't really fault the school for it.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the teacher and student had had some history of disagreements culminating in this confrontation. It doesn't excuse the teacher's and principal's petty authoritarianism but I wouldn't be surprised if the student had tried to flex a little senior muscle and got smacked down for it.

No, I mean that once challenged on the skirt she may have become more confrontational than usual due to a mild case of senioritis. I've seen it happen among my friends in high school. We were mostly bookish and relatively quiet, if quietly rebellious, but near the end of our senior year we became a bit more rambunctious.

I hate this stupid shit. Of course girls get screwed over more with dress codes. Have you ever been to a department store? There's always a little section for guys, a slightly bigger section for kids, and the rest of the goddamn place is brimming with women's clothing. Handbags, skirts, blouses, short shorts, mini-skirts, shit tons of different shoes, all kinds of perfume and jewelry, you name it.

For whatever reason, women tend to like clothes more then men, so designers and store owners cater to those desires, hence giving women more options in the fashion department. So when you limit the amount of allowed clothing to narrow and specific lists/guidelines, it will impact women's choices more, simply because they have more choices to begin with. Dress codes are still petty authoritarian nonsense, but hate them for that instead of hating them for dumb reasons and drinking the Kool-Ade of stupidity. But alas, this is the rape culture panic so these people are practically drowning in the shit.

Although I believe in proper dress for males and females I think schools are becoming more like indoctrination camps so students will fit into our over regulated society. I am so glad I am a baby boomer. I had relative freedom as a youth. A good job market to taise my family and what appears to be an ok retirement. And before I here you whiners cry about about how us baby boomers screwed everything up our votes didn't matter anymore than yours.
