George Stephanopoulos: Clinton Foundation Donor

Former Clinton official failed to disclose $50,000 in donations to ABC.

MIght possibly be biased toward the Clintons, maybe, possibly, sort of.
ABC

So here's what political Twitter/blogosphere will be chewing over for the next few hours. From Politico:

ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos has given $50,000 to the Clinton Foundation in recent years, charitable contributions that he did not publicly disclose while reporting on the Clintons or their non-profit organization, the On Media blog has learned.

In both 2013 and 2014, Stephanopoulos made a $25,000 donation to the 501 nonprofit founded by former president Bill Clinton, the Foundation's records show. Stephanopoulos never disclosed this information to viewers, even when interviewing author Peter Schweizer last month about his book "Clinton Cash," which alleges that donations to the Foundation may have influenced some of Hillary Clinton's actions as Secretary of State.

"I made charitable donations to the Foundation in support of the work they're doing on global AIDS prevention and deforestation, causes I care about deeply," he said. "I thought that my contributions were a matter of public record. However, in hindsight, I should have taken the extra step of personally disclosing my donations to my employer and to the viewers on air during the recent news stories about the Foundation. I apologize."

In a statement to the On Media blog on Thursday, Stephanopoulos apologized and said that he should have disclosed the donations to ABC News and its viewers.

Although Politico broke the story, Andrew Stiles of the Washington Free Beacon says the disclosure to Politico happened after he contacted ABC News for comment. His version of the story is here. Here is ABC's response:

As George has said, he made charitable donations to the Foundation to support a cause he cares about deeply and believed his contributions were a matter of public record.  He should have taken the extra step to notify us and our viewers during the recent news reports about the Foundation.  He's admitted to an honest mistake and apologized for that omission.  We stand behind him.

Political Twitter is reminding everybody this morning that MSNBC suspended Keith Olbermann back in 2010 after he gave donations to political campaigns. The Clinton Foundation, though, is not a political campaign. It's ostensibly a philanthropic charity, and that's Stephanopoulos' explanation for his donations. But the Foundation is mired in the aforementioned scandal over allegations that foreign donors were hoping their contributions would influence Hillary Clinton's decisions as secretary of state. Peter Suderman has more about that big mess here and here.

Stephanopoulos' ties to the Clinton family are obviously well-known. He was President Bill Clinton's former communications director, for heaven's sake. Arguably, even if he hadn't donated to the foundation, he had enough personal emotional stake in the Clintons that ABC should have never had him interview Schweizer anyway.

Stephanopoulos managed to parlay a lucrative career out of being a good Clinton lickspittle. Of course he kickbacked to the bosses.

  2. Princess Trigger   10 years ago

He can get a cushy job with the "Foundation" and help in all its charitable "works".

I want to see him planting trees in the tropics.

  3. WTF   10 years ago

What difference at this point does it make?

  4. Grand Moff Serious Man   10 years ago

Is there anyone, even on Team Blue, who thinks George Snuffleluffogus is anything but a Clinton hack?

There's really no reputation to damage here.

  5. Aresen   10 years ago

    This is a non-starter.

Yes, by the Ron Bailey test, he probably should have made the full disclosure, but the fact that he was already known to be close to the Clintons makes this more of a question about why anyone is surprised.

The MSM and the Political Class are so incestuously intertwined that this doesn't even register on the scandal scale.

    1. Tonio   10 years ago

      IOW, a fake scandal?

      1. Swiss Servator, Switzier!   10 years ago

        +1

      2. Aresen   10 years ago

It should be a scandal, but it is such small potatoes compared to all the other shit that is going on that it is pointless.

        It's like a fart in a hurricane.

  6. DrZaius   10 years ago

This is shocking to... nobody? If anybody can never disassociate with the Clinton admin it's this guy. And it's because anybody that had an IQ over 10 (ten) and watched CNN in the 90's saw Mr. Alphabet Soup every day and knew he was a Clinton hack.

    1. Aresen   10 years ago

Is that 10 in binary or decimal?

      1. Pope Jimbo   10 years ago

There are only 10 types of people when it comes to understanding binary. Those who do and those who don't.

        1. Swiss Servator, Switzier!   10 years ago

That's just a plain old ten. I didn't want anybody to think I mistyped 100 because you'd have to be really fucking stupid to not know who Stpehoneogoiplous carries water for.

I expect some hard hitting analysis on how Bill supports Hillary next.

Then why do we care about the Clinton foundation at all?

Might as well call it the Human Fund.

I make up to $90 an hour working from my home. My story is that I quit working at Walmart to work online and with a little effort I easily bring in around $40h to $86h? Someone was good to me by sharing this link with me, so now i am hoping i could help someone else out there by sharing this link... Try it, you won't regret it!......

You should probably work for the Clinton Foundation. The letter I received from Bill claimed to make $500,000 per hour.

  12. Drake   10 years ago

It has to be discouraging to the other Clinton toadies to see Stephanopoulos' success.

Or, do they see him as a traitor for straying from the sides of their masters?

  13. CatoTheElder   10 years ago

It is well known that George Snuffleupagus has always been a Clinton flack.

That he "contributed" money to the Clinton slush fund is a petty matter. Far more offensive it the fact that a major news organization would employ a Clinton flack under the pretense that he is an objective journalist.

    1. Mokers   10 years ago

      Clinton slush fund

Set up a charity. Get your friends to contribute by telling them it's all tax deductable. Never worry about an audit because of your friends in the government. Nice work if you can get it.

Reminds me I need to renew my donation to The Human Fund for Festivus this year.

  14. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

I'd be less worried about who someone like that donated to and more worried about who gave them money. Iirc there was a report years ago about how Sam Donaldson, George Will, etc., would regularly get these lavish vacations paid for by certain interest groups who they then would opine about without disclosing that.

    1. bacon-magic   10 years ago

      Yes,
It is always a good idea to excuse someone's bad behavior by pointing out someone else's bad behavior. FOAD you hack.

  15. Calvin Coolidge   10 years ago

What is it about being around Hillary that causes so many people to make these kind of mistakes? Is it her aura of brilliance? Her sincere smile and laugh? Her awe-inspiring beauty?

"Let's see: Direct foundation donations from foreign governments. OK, so the spreadsheet says $120 million from Saudi Arabia, I'll just transcribe that onto the disclosure form like this .... wait! what is that!? I've never seen such cankles before! A vision of loveliness! ...."

  16. grrizzly   10 years ago

I'm not sure that it's commonly accepted that Stephanopoulos is a Clinton hack. It was Stephanopoulos who moderated the Clinton-Obama debate in April 2008. The left was apoplectic after the debate, but not because of Stephanopoulos's Clinton past.

    1. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

I think being so explicitly associated with the Clinton's actually provides some pressure on him to demonstrate he's not a hack. Similarly look at Chris Wallace who often tears into GOP interviewees as if to prove 'hey, I know you know I'm employed by Fox, but I'm going to show I'm not a hack here.'

      1. Kure'i   10 years ago

Chris Wallace isn't a hack. And he's a registered Democrat, for what it's worth.

  17. a better weapon   10 years ago

So basically, if Hillary gets the nomination, he is far-and-away the best candidate for the Presidential Debate Moderator gig?

Joking aside, this is a big yawn to me. Being an insider and getting his bread buttered for years by being close to Clinton's power source means a $50,000 donation barely even registers.

  18. Robert   10 years ago

    1. MJGreen   10 years ago

How'd an elephant get into his pajamas?

      1. Aresen   10 years ago

        Eating peanuts in bed.

(Sorry. Not saying that is just like trying not to do the final two taps of 'shave and a haircut.')

      2. Robert   10 years ago

The elephant got in his pajamas the same way the $50 grand got to ABC.

I will always remember this Stephenopopopolous dipshit for that GOP nomination debate that he moderated in the last election cycle. He ran the debate like he was Jerry Springer, asking each candidate to attack each other or respond to attacks made some weeks prior. Then immediately after the debate he took to the airwaves crying about how the GOP candidates were too busy attacking each other to debate the issues people actually care about.

Arguably, even if he hadn't donated to the foundation, he had enough personal emotional stake in the Clintons that ABC should have never had him interview Schweizer anyway.

Also, don't forget John Harwood shacking up with a Dem senator (Cantwell) and still being taken seriously as an "objective" reporter - and presented as such by NBC - about all things partisan.

  22. JohnB   10 years ago

As a big Disney fan, this troubles me. ABC News is a brand that no one really watches. The News division at ABC is less relevant than the content on Disney Junior!. The Walt Disney Company should not let a division of their Media business unit stain the company with the stench of another Clinton scandal specifically or partisan chicanery generally, it's bad for shareholder value. It would be in everyone's best interests for the entertainment company to terminate ABC News and get on with being an entertainment company. Let Fox and NBC prostitute themselves for the their respective parties.

I prefer my WDW vacation and Mickey Mouse to be free of association with corrupt partisan hacks.

    thewaltdisneycompany.com slash contact-us slash corporate-communications

If you are equally put off by this send Bob Iger a message that as a Disney fan you are offended by Stephanopolous' actions and that he is dragging the Disney Company into that Clinton cesspool. Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader, and and even Maleficent are too memorable and honored a cast of characters to be filthed up by association with the Clintons and their political stooges.

The broadcast channel news and commentary shows are as relevant as telegrams these days. There is no logical reason for an entertainment company, especially one dedicated to sports and kids, to be running a minor division that serves as an outlet for either the Democratic or Republican parties National Committees. That's why there is NBC and Fox.

In 1994, columnist Jack Anderson reported that Stephanopoulos sealed an $835,000 commercial real estate deal consisting of a two-story apartment including an eyeware retailer with a below-market loan rate from a bank owned by Hugh McColl who had been called by President Clinton "the most enlightened banker in America". A NationsBank commercial loan officer said that this loan did "not fit our product matrix" as banks typically only offer such loans for customers with deep pockets and on a short-term adjustable rate basis. Stephanopoulos' real estate agent explained that "nobody making $125,000 could qualify for the property without the commercial property (lease)". One former senior bank regulator told Anderson that, "If his name were George Smith, and he didn't work in the White House, this loan wouldn't have gotten made."[15] Regarding the controversy, NationsBank stated, "The loan described by Jack Anderson as a commercial loan to George Stephanopoulos was, in fact, a residential mortgage loan. At the time the loan commitment was made, Mr. Anderson (or his imaginary 'George Smith' who 'doesn't work in the White House') could have walked into any NationsBanc Mortgage Company office in the D.C. area and received the same excellent rate and term for the same deal."[16

    1. Jayburd   10 years ago

However, Stephanopoulos' realtor states that he would not have qualified for the loan without the commercial property rent. One NationsBank source states that the issuance of a residential loan on mixed-use properties is such a rarity that it was not even addressed in the "NationsBanc Mortgage Corporation's Program Summary" or its "Credit Policy Manual". A NationsBanc underwriting memo revealed that one of the three restrictions for mixed-use properties is that "the borrower must be the owner of the business entity". The source claims that NationsBanc told the listing agent that, "We're not (interested in mixed-use properties), but we do have an appetite for this particular loan." NationsBank's primary regulator at the time was Comptroller of the Currency Eugene Ludwig, a Rhodes scholar who attended Yale Law School with President Clinton, and who had been asked to investigate NationsBank by Democratic congressmen Henry B. Gonzalez and John Dingell.[17]
